Ariddian Football Association invites world to Blind Football Cup

In a somewhat unexpected announcement today, the Ariddian Football Association stated its intention to host an international football competition for the world's most skilled blind players. Although the idea is unprecedented, it was not entirely surprising given that the PDSRA has long urged for the creation of Paralympic events in the Olympic Games.

"We lack the facilities to organise Paralympics," AFA President Anna Teals explained. "But a football Cup doesn't require much specific equipment. We'll provide protective eye pieces and all safety equipment, as well as balls with bells on them."

She added: "This is an invitation for the nations of the world to send their best blind football players to compete. It's the world's first major tournament for people with disabilities."

The decision has been applauded by Mélanie Sandré (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/M%C3%A9lanie_Sandr%C3%A9), a swimmer with a disability who took part in the Olympic Games despite the lack of events for athletes with disabilities.

"It's a very good start," Sandré said. "It'll give the opportunity to these players to prove themselves and show their skill in front of the entire world."

The rules will be simple. Each side will have five players on the field, and up to five on the bench, with a smaller field than for "standard" football. All players must be blind, other than the goalkeeper.

"We're hoping for a positive international response," Teals said. "We can accomodate any number of participants."

OOC: You can sign up in this thread. I'll create other threads for results and RPing if and when necessary. Unless anyone wants to volunteer to scorinate, results will be generated with the good ole' dice from yesteryears. ;)

BUMP, in case anyone's interest. If I only get three additional signups, we'll just have to start with the semis... or do a pool final, or something. ;)

Incidentally, the Real Life Blind World Cup is taking place right now in Argentina.
Anastasiania

Anastasiania will consider entering a side. Blind football in the nation is organised by the Handicapped Sport Association, and there is rumoured to be enough players to form a reasonable national team.

The Ariddian Football Association and the Comité Paralympique Ariddien welcome and applaud Anastasiania's interest. We are hoping that the Blind World Cup, as the first ever international sports competition for athletes with disabilities, will be a successful precursor to further, similar events.

To: Filstaf Football Association

We are truly pleased to see your interest in this event, and your dedication to making it a success for your country's best blind football players.

You may send as many assistants (coaches, medics and so on) as you please, but the standard number of players would be ten (five starters, five on the bench), including two sighted goalkeepers (a starter and a substitute).

We wish you success in this competition.

I could let you use the scorinator I mentioned to you a few days ago at our secret IRC hideout, although it still needs a tiny bit of work. When would it be needed?

OOC: Thanks! And good question. That depends on signups. Assuming there are not going to be heaps, I'll probably cut it off at 32. And since that's undoubtedly way too optimistic, I may close signups as soon as there have been a couple of days without any new ones.

Edit: Oh and, I've just thought, I'll need someone to scorinate Ariddia's matches. (I mean, I know I don't cheat, but scorinating one's own games isn't the done thing. ;) )

If there are no further signups within the next two days, I'll start the Cup then. If not, in no more than a week.

In any case, I'll start a pre-Cup RP thread soon.

There probably won't be any qualifying stages (due to the small number of participants), but even if there are, all matches will be held in Ariddia. The stadium for each match will be announced once the number of participants has been finalised.
