High Commander steps down. New Emperor crowned.

The Crimm
02-11-2006, 19:20
All non-critical, including low-level military, transmissions from Crimmond were interuppted by the flag of the Intercontinental Empire of Crimmond, with some public advisory voiceover. After a few moments, this shifts to a news report.

An Imperial International Newslink talking head looked up. "This morning, at approximatly 3:50 AM GMT, High Commander Andrew Coleman IV suffered a stroke in his sleep. He was able to get to his telephone and alert his security detail, who rushed him to the Palace medical center for immediate treatment. He is expected to make a full recovery, but he and his doctors say that he is in no shape to lead the nation for at least a few weeks.

"In his stead, he has named two temporary leaders. One is his little known son, Kenneth Coleman II and the other is Warlord Vercetti, overseer of the garrisons along the Baltic. While Vercetti is well known and well respected in the Intercontinental Empire, Kenneth Coleman has rarely been seen as a child and has not been seen in public for nearly fifteen years.

"No one is sure of what Kenneth looks like, other than that he is said to resemble his father in his youth, even growing a goatee to emphasise the resemblence. He is said to be a very good diplomat and a firm, but kind man. Much like his father, he believes that the Empire is at it's best in it's current state: A parlimentary state, protected by a military dictatorship."

The scene cuts away abruptly to a news conferance, where Vercetti is speaking about the High Commander's health and answering questions on how policy will be influnced by his heath. Then comes the question about Kenneth Coleman, asking where he is and when they get to speak to him. At that moment, a man in a bussiness suit, with a red shirt and tie steps into the room, looking almost exactly like the High Commander as he did back when Andrew Coleman was a Marine Lieutenant Colonel. He steps to the podium and people gasp, as he even sounds like his father at that age. "You can meet me now and ask me all the questions you want. Before you do, I wish to say that my father is recovering and he will retake the throne inside of two months. I am here to serve my father as his eyes and ears, while the General handles the actual ruling of the nation. I am heir, but I will let the more capable man lead in my father's stead." Questiosn sprung up about his past. "I cannot divulge what I have been doing for the past few years, nor would I otherwise. My past is my affair, not any one elses." His voice grew cold and hard, again much like his father's did. "Now, I must go attend to my duties. Good day."

-----------

Two uneventful months later, Kenneth Coleman stood behind his father, who finally let the public see just how bad his health really was. His aviators were off for the first time in years, allowing his sunken and bloodshot, though still quite deep and intelligent, eyes show. He allowed himself to limp more and his son to help steady him. It came as no large suprise when he announced that he was unable to continue ruling the Empire. "All the venom of life has gone out of me... I have lost the lust for power and women and money... now I see things clearly. And I see that my time as ruler is at an end and a younger, more powerful man should take my place. I give you.... Emperor Kenneth Coleman II."

Kenneth smiled and stepped forward to stand by his father, making it even more obvious how far the older man had fallen from his youthful strength. "Thank you, father. I want you all to know that even though I still have the lust for power, women and money, I will allways have a place in my inner circle for my father, whose insight will continue to help guide our Empire through the politics and war of the world. One cannot buy the experience that he has gained over the years."

He paused and looked at the military represenatives. "The Empire's way of ruling things will not change much. Yes, I am a civilian, running a military dictatorship that protects the parlimentary government of the Empire... but I have been on enough military operations to know how the military should be run. Exactly how it is right now." He got nods of approval from the uniformed men. "To our allies in Gholgoth, this changes nothing between our nations. We stand with you in defense of your nations. To our closest allies, in Automagfreek and Pantera... you are like brothers and sisters to our people. All you need to do is say the word and the Empire will leap to your side... though there has been no ceremony, the Intercontinental Empire considers our alliance to be on the same level as Blood Pact."

Fredrick Barbarosea IV was sorting through his papers, an unlit cigar in hand. He was a wreck. His five o'clock shadow wasn't just a shadow anymore, and the bags under his eyes were heavy. His hair was matted and he looked 20 years older then he was. He hadn't slept for 2 days now, as some internal events had kept him up waiting for any slight change in the situation. He twitched. The sweat stains on his shirt were noticeable, not because of heat, but because of stress.

As he read through the daily announcements, he noticed that the situation in Crimmond from a couple months before had been updated. He read that the unknown Kenneth Coleman II was taking over rule of the empire. He had sent a private message earlier to Andrew wishing him the best in his declining state of health. He was worried enough already with other things, he didn't need to worry about the stability of Crimmond under an unknown. He sent a message to Kenneth, it read:

Kenneth Coleman II, Emperor of Crimmond

Hello Kenneth, I have learned that you are to take over for your father,
Andrew. It is a sad day for Crimmond, as Andrew was truly a great leader.
At the same time, a new dawn is rising on the nation, with leadership passing
to yourself. As I am sure you are well aware, not much is known about you,
neither in a foreign sphere nor domestically. This is an area of concern for
myself, as you are in a spot of a good deal of power. I do not doubt in your
capacity as a leader, I simply caution you to rule in moderation until you can
feel out the situation in Crimmond and abroad. If you need anything, consider
Barbarosea as one of your allies, whether it be defensivly or offensivly. I
wish you the best.

Fredrick Barbarosea IV

With that, Fredrick turned back to his internal worries.

Kenneth looked over the two messages as he sat in the office that had once been his father's. It smelled deeply of leather, wood and preserving fluids of the ageless tomes lining the walls. He sat in a chair older than any living Crimm and at a desk older than that... only the computer terminal broke the illusion that this wasn't some ancient time.

He sent a message back to Barbarosea...

Hello, new friend...

I believe you have made a mistake in your assessment of me. I may be an unknown to you and an unknown even to my people... but they are not unknown to me and niether is Gholgoth as a whole. I understand perfectly what my position is, what I must do as a leader and what I must not do unless it is forced upon me. This nation has had too many well known leaders wreak havoc on the internal workings of the Empire. Better they do not know me and do not fear me...

I am not my father, nor am I deathbringers that Delta and Varchak were, or the pacifist weaklings that Reil Tian or even Saratov were. I am Kenneth Coleman II... and I intend my rule to be the shining example of how one should rule. Do not worry about me. Nor my people...

He looked at the otehr message and responded in kind.

Your thanks is all I need, Count. I will be in touch if anything is needed.

The Count wrote back at short message to the new Emperor. He knew what was going through the man’s head because of his first time of being leader of nation. That was long time ago.

Very well, I will wait for that call. ~ The Count

Northmapton, Imitora

Rydell flipped through the morning news briefs, an Imitoran Air Force Officer having dropped them off. Most were the usual, third world shit holes and second level nations pushing to be close to the top, if it were even possible anymore. It was a true ceiling of those who held actual power, and they would keep the so called pissants from growing any further. A news brief with a Special Interest stamp and lable caught her eye, and she pulled it out of the stack, glancing over the general synopsis of the story.

She read over the full report, and called in one of the diplomatic aides in her staff, one who could give her a full history of the Imitoran/Crimmond relations. After a few short hours of history lessons, First Speaker Courtney Rydell had called in a speech writter and her Minister of Foreign Affairs in order to get certain works finished. After a few more hours of work, the dispatch had been released.

Your Eminence Kenneth Colleman II, Emperor of Crimmond

Allow me to be one of the first to welcome you to your new position of power on the international stage. At one point, our two nations were close allies, but the tests of time have pulled us apart. I can only hope that soon, we can bring Crimmond and Imitora back to freindship. I hope that your rule is filled only with success in all your endevours. If you need anything at all, feel free to contact me. I leave with respect and good wishes,

Courtney Rydell

The seventh Awthyr Byndragwn, Andrew Harold the first, was fishing when he finally got the update about Crimmond crowning a new emperor.

"Who?" he asked, busy bringing in the nets along with the members of the crew of the ship he was lodging on. Recent demands of reform reagrding the fishing industry had found him actually getting the taste of what really went on. It got him to the source of the problem, and made getting things done easier, since few ministers bothered with actually confronting a man of utter intelligence and stubborness.

"I'll tell you after the deck has been cleared, my lord," said the only assistant he had brought, James.

Two hours later, James finally had Andrew's ear long enough to explain the situation in Crimmond. Reacting thoughtfully, he grabbed a fishing pole, and cast out for sea bass. "Have this thing specially freeze-wrapped whenever I happen to get it in. I'll write him a note."

"Yes, my lord," came James's reply.

The note, and freeze dried sea bass, arrived at Kenneth's palace five days later.

To His Most Esteemed Majesty, Emperor Kenneth Coleman II of Crimmond:

Salutations and congratulations. Our nation was happy to hear about the quick, and shall we say efficient, transition of power in your country. While we are remorseful that your father's health has taken so surprisingly a downturn, we are nevertheless joyous to hear about your coronation. In recognition of this momentous occasion, we hereby present you with a sea bass from our oceans, captured and prepared by His Majesty's own hands.

-The most esteemed court of His Majesty, Andrew Harold I, Awthyr Byndragwyn.

Meanwhile, back in his court, Andrew rembered a small matter weighing on his mind. "James, what type of government did you say crimmond had?"

"They maintain their pride on have a Parliamentary state protected by a Military Dictatorship. In essence, certain powers are shared, whereas others are reserved according to..."

"Day-to-day operations headed by a legislature, with executive and emergency power held by a monarch holding the support of his military. Got it." The king looked at the problem in front of him. James had a clear advantage, having to knock in only the 5 ball and then the 8, whereas Andrew still had to deal with the 13 and 14. Circumventing the problem, he knocked the 13 in, missed the 14, allowed James to hit the 5, but in doing so, set himself up to scratch on the 8-shot. "I win."

"Imitora? That's a name I've not heard in some time..." Kenneth looked to his father, who sat near by, looking stronger than he did for the cameras, as he was stronger. He had embellished a bit to make it obvious that his son should take power.

"Yes... not since the APTO scattered have we had any contact with them. Tread carefully, son. The death of the Allied Powers was a turbulant time and there were many lies told to protect self interests. Only the ones that joined us here, in Gholgoth, should be trusted. The rest should not be distrusted out of hand though... many years have gone by since then."

Kenneth sighed. "I know, father. I have no intention of delving into the shadows of the past unless I have to. I shall not forget the past, but I shall never be obsessed by it..."

--------------

Later that day, Kenneth gave a speech.

"I want to take our nation to where it has never gone before. Power, wealth, peace and freedom. We've never had all four at the same time and never for long. I intend to change that. Crimmond will become the pinacle of what a Gholgothian nation can be. One does not have to subjegate the peoiple in order for them to follow. If they love you... they will follow by choice. And that is stronger than forced fellowship.

"Elections for Senate will be held regularly. The police state that has existed will shrink to a manageble size that allows citizens to act like they are citizens and not slaves to the government. There shall be no more mysterious dissappearences because you spoke ill of the government.

"I have taken the first and the most noticable step in this process. As of this morning... the Imperial Crimmond Inquisition is defunct and a normal Intelligence department is being created in it's place. You don't have to fear an Inquisitor's Negotiator anymore..." He holds up what appears to be a very fancy cattleprod, then throws it to the ground. "The banner of the Empire will stay as it is... it is a good flag and it represents us well. A mixture of cultures that makes us strong.

"I have also increased funding to the African rehabilitation programs using the leftover funding from the Inquisition's inflated budget. Terraforming on Terra may seem a silly idea in words, but it is turning the arid regions of our empire, once known as Ethiopia and The Sudan, into temperate zones that will become a much needed breadbasket. Not only for that area, but for the whole Empire."

He looks at the cameras. "And this is only the start."
