Seize the Day

Austar Union

It had been years since the fighting had ended, and even the largest of critics had been surprised how quickly the Austarians had managed to pull together to rebuild their nation. Finally deciding upon a democracy, and allowing the public to vote, it seemed that their most popular candidate so far had made it well into his term in office without problem or disruption. President Carmine Goodchild had made an effort to serve his country well, and already things were close to what they had been before the late Lord Indigo Blue had lost control of the nation's command. Citizens were able to enjoy prosperity once again, and personal wealth which had always been a characteristic of the average Austarian, had finally returned. Enterprise was booming, markets were on the rise, and once again the nation had re-established itself as a leading power in a Universal Perspective, particularly in the area of economics.

Unified once again also, D'na Apollo on Mercury had been re-acquired by the Austar Union, this time as a Protectorate and not a Colony per say. The Federation was strong again, and trade was mostly handled by the private sectors - the government honoring any prior agreements made with nations abroad. It was only time however, before the seeds of a dictatorship crept into the minds of those in leadership, including President Goodchild. And so it was, that on the eve of the nation's anniversary of signing the National Unity Treaty, the President and his closest advisory were to assume full command of the Union, with the backing of its police and military factions. Victory was once again claimed over the democratic institution, and a future of an autocratic reign was established.

Of course, it had not come without the various deeds needed to be committed; the kidnapping and murder of Goodchild's various political opponents, the acquisition of all media by the state, and the distribution of government-sponsored propaganda; the list was endless. It was only the most heinous of crimes that were kept secret.
