The Enlightener: A mans walks into a bar and says 'ouch!'...
It's Gridball Time!
All hail the Bettia Aroras for verily they have cometh to kick seven shades of brown out of t'other Gridball teams.
Well, that's the plan anyway... but after being drawn in Group D against the host nation, there are three chances of that happening: fat, slim and none. Still, stranger things have happened. Although inexperianced at international level, the Aroras will be hoping to emulate the steady success of Bettia's football team, and the phenomenal rise of Bettian Ice Hockey, both at senior and Under-21 level.
However, the big question is this - how can the Takilan principles that the Bettian people have embraced so readily be translated onto the gridball field?
The twenty-three man squad selected for the opening match is:
Attack
1....QB....Geraint Al-Shahaf (Subarnas Volcanoes)
2....WR....Da'ud Brooks (Subarnas Volcanoes)
3....WR....Jamin Ephraim (Fiilghud Chargers) (also Kick and Punt Return)

5....RB....Rory Colman (Gabalfa Gasheads)
6....C.....Cerwyn Mably (Ceffinton Turbos)

Toranot Rockies Crushed
The Imperial Eagles Win in Their First Game at the Gridiron Cup
While not many Valerians really care for a good pigskin game, many people have gained interest after hearing about the Gridiron Cup. Today, in their first match game in Virginia Nova's Nashville Coliseum, The Valerian Imperial Eagles, our national team, thrashed the Toranot Rockies in a rather easy win. Grigor Kazhushsky was making good throws that, at 63.8% of the time, were completed. 23 out of 36 passes were made.
Two touchdown passes in the first quarter of the game began to show what stuff the Imperial Eagles could do. Alexei Kamatka and his close brother, George Kamatka, took advantage of their time on the field in the first quarter and racked up 14 points for Magnus Valerius and a large number of yards for themselves; Alexei racked up 62 yards in the first quarter while his younger brother earned 44 yards. While Toranot managed to make a touchdown by outmanouvering the Valerian defensive line's entrenched position at the 30 yard line, that was about the only scoring they saw today.
In the third quarter, Demetrios Kalamatakianos caught a pass from Kazhushsky and ran an amazing 71 yards for a photo finish and another touchdown for the Valerians. Kalamatakianos broke the tough defensive game played by Toranot since the first two touchdowns for the Eagles.
At a stray moment in the third quarter (8:15-TOR to be exact), Toranot fumbled the ball and the ball was quickly picked up by Domnall Ui Cathasaigh, who took the ball for a ride along 24 yards and scored the fourth touchdown for the Imperial Eagles. The fourth quarter saw the Valerians scrambling to make more of an impact. It was up to Lionel Suvarovich, who made a field goal from 28 yards. The game ended with pomp as a marching band from a local Nova Nashville high school performed while the Imperial Eagles went to the lockers triumphant in their first game.

"Thrusting, Goals and Ultraviolence - The Abridged History of McPsychoville Sport", by Ian McClaskey
Section 9 - "The Gridiron Campaigns"
The world's first Gridiron Cup started among some acrimony from teams entering; it appeared that hosts Virginia Nova had included a rather unsettling clause in the format for the group stages. The clause said that the five teams who topped the groups would advance, but that the hosts would also progress unless they failed to win a single game. If this were to happen, the runner-up with the best record would advance. The complaints from the teams was that this system was unfair, and that teams with better records than the Virginia Novan team would miss out. Nothing was actually done to change the clause by the hosting bodies, but when Virginia Nova won their first game, the complaints returned.
However, for the Psychos, their first shot at gridiron success got off to a good start; after a tightly-fought game that went into double overtime, they triumphed over the Elven Security Forces twenty-four points to twenty-one. Despite going 14-0 down in the first period, the three wide receivers created havoc within the ESF defence, and it was Jacob Schwarz who provided the first points, evading the defensive line and catching quarterback Tyler Kidd's pass to score the touchdown.
Kicker Alex Markson scored the resulting conversion, and then in the fourth period kicked another field goal to tie the game up at 14-14 - this was after the defensive line, lead superbly by linebacker Kris Nash, managed two consecutive safety scores off poor play by the ESF quarterback. The first period of overtime, surprisingly, saw another two touchdowns but also some confusion in the Psycho camp. After Kidd had run for the touchdown and Markson got the conversion, the Psychos expected the game to be over. However, the method of overtime had never been specified by the Virginia Novan bodies, and it was only now that it was college overtime was in effect.
Noticeably unsettled, the Psychos lined up for another charge, but the offensive line did an awful job of defending; Kidd was taken down and ESF were let in to score and convert the resulting touchdown to make it 21-21. Psycho coach Jack Kariya was fuming in the dugout, but there was very little he could do except watch; however, the Psychos took less than a minute into the second period of overtime to score again; once again, it was Alex Markson doing the damage with a second field goal, and armed with experience, the team held off ESF to secure the victory, 24-21.
The momentum from this match simply kept on rolling, and when they faced Marceau State later that week, the gap in quality was palpable - the Psychos shut the Olympiques out 34-0.

OOC: There are a cople of things I need to say to Virginia Nova before I carry on roleplaying. Firstly, as mentioned above, this "clause" thing whereby you will qualify automatically if you win at least once is just plain unfair - if we had qualifiers followed by group stages, I could understand you automatically entering into the group stages, but depriving a team with a better record of getting through isn't right. Secondly, you definitely are not supposed to scorinate your own games - the risk of some underhanded work there is too great; for example, Rugby World Cup V, I think it was, was scorinated by Haraki (thank you Sarz, I knew it had plenty of vowels), and when they won the cup, there were complaints about the system. Basically, scorinating your own matches means that any success you have will be viewed as suspect and for good reason.
What are you going to do about these?
EDIT: With Sarz's comment in mind, I'll scorinate your matches.

Aroras Touchdown Repeatedly In VN
Bettians love sport... that fact goes without saying.
Bettians love Takilan tactics... again, a fact well-known to the world.
But how can System Takil be applied to gridball? That's the question the CGB (Cymdeithas Gridball am Bettia) were pondering before sending their squad out to Virginia Nova to compete in the NS Gridiron Cup. It's not as if they could just leave one defender on the pitch whilst sending shedloads of attackers to lay siege to the opponent's goal, as our football and hockey teams have been doing to varying amounts of success.
The Aroras (or Gridoras as their fans have nicknamed them, in an effort to distinguish them from their footy and hockey counterparts) have emphactially answered that question in their first two matches with a combination of stupidly-aggressive blitz defending and expansive passing plays, which has seen Bettia gain a large number of first downs thanks to the accurate throwing arm of Geraint Al-Shahaf.
Bettia's first match saw them face off against Da Whoseline People, and they wasted no time in stamping their authority on the game as Al-Shahaf linked up well with his Subarnas Volcanoes teammate Da'ud Brooks, finding him with a long pass to enable the wide receiver to run in Bettia's first touchdown with just two minutes on the clock.
However, the Aroras were found guilty of resting on their laurels as they were stung by a quick comeback by Da Whoseline People, who drew themselves level with a well-executed running play. Thankfully Bettia didn't let this setback get them down, and they soon lit up the Bank of Caroline Stadium with an imperious display. They went into the first break seven points up, before notching up a steady stream of touchdowns to finish comfortable winners.
Confidence was high going into Matchday Two, and they needed it as their opponents were none other than their hosts, who were roared on by a noisy partisan crowd. The first ten minutes were a nervy affair as both teams tried to push forward. The breakthrough came after Akani Sands' left tackle Bryan Savage burst through the Eagles' offensive line to sack their quarterback. Nine plays later, Al-Shahaf handed the ball over to Rory Colman, who was somehow able to dink his way over the line to put Bettia ahead. Bettia's lead was increased two minutes into the second period thanks to a 37-yard field goal which was easily dispatched by kicker Jamal Khalil.
This ten-point lead obviously pissed the Eagles off as they completely dominated the rest of the period, finally giving their fans something to shout about as they ran in two touchdowns of their own to head into the halftime break four points to the good.
That four point advantage soon became seven as the Eagles scored a field goal of their own. That was the only incident of note in a very equal third period which saw both teams more or less cancel each other out.
On the other hand, the last quarter was truly a thing of beauty... but only if you're Bettian. The army of green and gold that populated the stadium and streets of New Charlotte were soon cheering as Jamin Ephraim pulled off a marvellous one-handed catch in the touchdown area to draw Bettia level.
Buoyed by this confidence-booster, Ephraim was the architect of Bettia's third touchdown of the day, returning Viginia Nova's kickoff for a sixty-two yard gain, from which Da'ud Brooks scored to put the Gridoras 25-17 up. The icing on the cake once again came courtesy of match MVP Ephraim, who latched onto a long cross-field pass to race clear of his markers to make the final score 35-17 to Bettia.
This result leaves Bettia sitting pretty at the top of the table with a 2-0 record and a +42 points difference. With their final group match against bottom-of-the-table Dingzanwa, the Bettian faithful both in Virgina Nova and at home in the Blessed Realm will be looking for another fine attacking display to confirm their place in the next stage.

Fan 1 (John Thompson): Hey, so how you think they will do against the Quackmybush Sharks?
Fan 2 (Carl Thomas): I don't know. Sharks are gonna be playing angry after their loss to the Jayhawks.
John Thompson: Yea but the Nationals lost to the Jayhawks too.
Carl Thomas: In overtime on a field goal, that is not a loss. Sharks got crushed, we gonna have to watch out, they are gonna hit us hard.
John Thompson: Ah our boys will do well.
