Mafia

Many of you may know of Mafia - not the Italian crime syndicate, but the popular party game. For those of you who don't, the rules of the game are simple, and are explained below.

Basically, Mafia is a game of strategy. The players are all members of a small town that has had the misfortune to be infilitrated by the Mafia, and while the Mafia members will know who's who, the Townies will only be certain of who they individually are.

For the Townies to win, they must kill off all threats to the town; for the Mafia to win, however, they must reduce the numbers of the Townies to a level where the numbers of the Mafia and the Townies are equal, as then they can rise up publicly and kill off the remaining Townies

Mechanics:

The game is split into two sections - Day and Night. This is game time, not real world time. Each player will receive their roles through a PM, and the number of Mafioso depends on the amount of people who sign up.

The game will begin at Night, when the Mafia make the decision on who to whack. Once I have received confirmation from the Mafia Boss, this person will die, and the game will move to the Day. Note that people who have abilities as part of their role can use them on this first Night.

In the Day, the Townies and the Mafia discuss the killing, any clues, any suspicions they have on other players and such and such. The Townies will be trying to lynch the Mafia, while the Mafia will be trying to confuse the Townies into lynching other Townies. Each player gets one vote, and the Day will end either a) 24 hours after my original post stating the Day has begun, or b) when one player receives a majority of the votes for his or her lynching. Votes should be posted in the format: Vote: Player Name. Whether you wish to include reasoning and such is down to you.

If there's anything here that you'd like clarified or any questions, ask away. If not, sign up!

Role PMs have been sent out. Now, I cannot stress this strongly enough - YOU ARE ON THE HONOUR SYSTEM HERE. The Mafia can talk to one another outside of this thread, but no-one else can. You may also NOT quote my initial PM to you in this thread as evidence. Confirm that you have received your PM here.

That said, enjoy. It is now Night, and the Mafia are now free to make their kill, as are anyone with night actions able to perform these.

The village of Johnstown had seen better times. Situated in the far north of Canada, the logging camp the village was initially based around has lain silent for years now, and the citizens remaining eke out a living doing whatever they can to survive. Once, it saw the trade from many cities, lumber yards all over the country taking advantage of the boonies to stock up, but now there's nothing. Seven houses. Seven people. Two Mafia. Wait, seven people? I apologise, that's not right.

It's not right at all.

The first person to discover the grisly sight in the courtyard is Toranat, out for his morning jog. Rounding the corner of a house, he's looking into the gap between the seven houses, the evergreen tree standing proud and tall. United O-Zone, on the other hand, isn't standing anywhere near as tall - the sizable ice-axe buried in his brain is testament to that. Toranat's screams awake the whole village, who file out one by one to take in the scene.

Quakmybush vomits; it's not surprising. In Johnstown, death is a rare visitor. SS State is made of sterner stuff, and he picks up UOZ's wallet; when he'd been attacked, it had fallen out of his pocket. Opening it, there is one obvious sign to his allegiance winking in the young sunlight.

United O-Zone was the Cop. He was Town Aligned.

It is now Day. Discuss who you wish to lynch, and vote away.

UOZ: Seriously, that was a very stupid thing to do. The Cop is a valuable player for the Town, and revealing yourself as such was an idiotic move. I had the Mafia's votes within a minute of that. Think of this as a learning experience, if nothing else.

The villagers had spoken - they knew, or at least thought they knew, who was responsible for this hideous crime. Marching out in unison to the tree where United O-Zone still sat, slowly decomposing, the six stood awkwardly; no-one knew how to proceed really.

Then Theodrea produced a coil of rope from under his coat. Quakmybush hit Toranat from behind, and the other two grabbed hold of his squirming arms and legs. Theodrea tossed the rope over the sturdiest of the tree branches, and SS State pulled Toranat to his feet with a full nelson hold in. Toranat was going crazy, flailing like mad, but the three strong men were enough to keep still.

Looping the rope around Toranat's neck, Power and War IV began to pull on the rope hanging loose. Inch by inch, Toranat rose off the ground, choking to death. But because of the poor knot Theodrea had tied it with, the makeshift noose began to give way - as Toranat dangled just below the tree branch, it did, sending him spinning backwards to the ground.

In retrospect, it was lucky for him that his neck broke instantly. The kicks of the remaining citzens was testament to that, and SS State was happy to steal his wallet. Only when he opened it, and a packet of pills fell out, did they realise what they'd done.

Toranat was the Doctor. He was Town Aligned.

It is now Night. Send me your night abilities now.

With both the Cop and the Doctor left, the remaining five villagers were understandably more wary of one another now. With two Mafiates left in a village of five, everyone was much less distrustful than ever before. And for good reason - the level of brutality the Mafia had demonstrated was made clear when they jammed an ice pick into United O-Zone's skull.

But for one unlucky villager, his time in the land of the living had run out. Unlike UOZ, he was lucky in one way; his death was both quick and noisy. The gunshots woke the entire village instantly, and SS State was dead before he hit the ground. The killers, however, must have been very quick, as there was no-one even close to the scene.

The four remaining villagers gathered in the courtyard, still in their bedclothes. Gingerly, Theodrea felt for SS State's identification - his wallet contained nothing of evidence either way, and he was left a mystery.

'Who could have done something like this?' Power asked of the group, looking up at the sky in despair. The soft click of a pistol hammer being pulled back was his answer.

'Us.' answered Quakmybush and Theodrea in unison. Two shots rang out once again, and two more innocent Townies fell to the ground, with two identical holes in their heads. Replacing his pistol, Quakmybush checked his watch.

'It's eight. We'd best be off if we want to get that plane.'

Climbing into the pick-up truck, the Mafiates left Johnstown behind. The blood-soaked village would be left for the next innocent victims...

The Mafia - Theodrea and Quakmybush - have won this game!

OOC: This game was spoilt by United O-Zone not reading the rules and revealing his identity to everyone, I think, but Toranat's post before he was lynched sealed the game for the Mafia. Once UOZ had posted here, the Mafia going after him was obvious, and since the Cop is the Town's MVP most of the time, they were fighting a losing battle from then on.

Toranat, however, had a slight chance of survival. The key to Mafia is persuasion - if you're good as making people see your point of view, you'll be good at this. What Toranat had to do was point out how wrong lynching him - based solely on him being the first one there - was, but he couldn't, sadly.

Still, this has been a good game. I'll make a thread for Mafia II soon, and I hope I can get more people involved.
