The First Edition of the Puntafora Football Invitational

In line with the excellent tradition of invitational football tournaments started by the greats of the past and present and kept strong by footballing powers like Liverpool England and Andossa Se Mitrin Vega, the Pacitalian Football Federation (Federazione di Futaboli Pacitaliana, FdFP) is proud to announce the creation of Pacitalia's first national men's football invitational tournament. After an intensive search, Puntafora has been selected as the permanent host of this tournament, boasting outstanding football facilities and an unbeatable volunteer spirit that will help make this tournament a success.

Structure
Sixteen (16) national men's sides will participate in the qualifying round of the first PFI. They will be separated into four groups of four with the draw taking into account the strengths and weaknesses of each team along with their styles of play in order to create the most equal, exciting and truly competitive groups possible. Each squad plays their opponents twice in the group stage, creating a schedule of six matches per side. From that, the top two squads from each group will advance to the last eight, also known as the quarterfinals and the first stage of the knockouts.

In the knockouts, all stages of this section of the tournament will have two legs, with the advancing squad having a superior aggregate score to that of their opponent. For example, if Team A plays Team B in leg 1 and earns a 3-0 victory, but loses 4-0 in the second leg, Team B advances to the next stage on an aggregate score of 3-4. If Team A plays Team B in leg 1 and earns a 3-0 victory but loses 3-2 in the second leg, they still advance on an aggregate score of 5-3.

Rankings and future participation
All teams will be ranked by their current World Cup ranking for the first tournament. After the conclusion of the first invitational, an independent PFI-only set of rankings will be introduced, though provisional rankings will be kept throughout the tournament as a preview of a team's final placing in the PFI rankings.

The first tournament will have open signups but the second will have an invitation sheet of 32 teams, of which the first 16 to signup will participate, or alternately, a final selection of 16 by the FdFP will be made.

Scorination
The invitational will be scorinated using the latest version of Bedistan's NSFootySim.

In closing:
We realise with all the different international level tournaments currently in operation, it will be hard to send a squad to participate but all squads are welcome from the top national side to as low as one's fifth-choice side. However, we must note that due to the equality of the competition based on talent, strength and weakness and style of play, it would be advisable to send the best available squad to the tournament.

The Liverpool England under 21s who finished 3rd in the FNI group stage but 4th overall (funny, that. I ought to change the format for FNI4) will participate. But this isn't really an "invitational" if you're letting teams signup. ;)

The Allied States will send the national team to compete in the PFI

Although Haraki's national side is a mix of men and women and, with World Cup qualifying under way fairly soon, will be indisposed, Haraki will still send a men's side to the tournament. It will be composed of the top male players who are not on the national team, nickname to be decided on later.

Becquerelia will send a men's team of some composition to compete.

Rorysville will sign up for this and send it's Tier II National Team

Lisburn Mateys would like to send a squad but expect a mix of ability in players from under 21's to uncapped players to full starters in order for players to win a place in the WC 29 squad

With massive retirements poised to sweep the side at the end of WC29* the States are in need of any international seasoning they can get their hands on. We will be sending a grab bag of high school teams, just like we used to for actual Cups.

*This assumes World Cup 29 will start someday.

[OOC - NMS highschoolers might have fallen a bit from their glory days, but are still the equivalent of a U21 side. Go ask Bedi, Rejis or LE what they used to be able to do]

Though frankly appalled at the sexism displayed by the Pacitalian Football Federation, Starblaydia will be sending a men's Under-21 side to the Puntafora Invitational.

Pacitalian rankings for the PFI

Teams are ranked on their average performance over the last five tournaments in their respective tournament (that is to say, TLC's national team's performance in the last five AOCAFs, Star's U21s performance in the last five U21WCs, etc.). Then, a relative ranking will be completed. If your team has no prior experience, you will be automatically ranked last or tied for last with 25 points assigned.

Built in 2001 and home to the LFP's first-division club Sportiva Puntafora FC, this giant, modern arena in the centre of Puntafora's trendy Islands neighbourhood will serve as the centrepiece for this invitational, hosting both marquee matches in the group stage, and all of the knockout stage's matches.

Capacity: 71,167

Home to the LFP's second-division club CF Pandivano Grigio, this suburban stadium was once Sportiva's home, and is a respectable size for a stadium built in the 1970s. It will host group matches, and should for any reason Ferma d'Accanto Ce be out of commission or unavailable for certain knockout matches, will host those as well.

Stadio Fina Terna
Capacity: 54,858

A charming older structure, refurbished in 2002 with the addition of 13,700 new seats and a surrounding park green, this beautiful stadium holds one of the most well-maintained pitches in international football but its lower capacity will restrict it to group stage matches only. Stadio Fina Terna hosts two third-division clubs, Puntafora's Black Iron Rovers and Suramalfia's Trapano Warriors.

Someone has just informed me that Virginia Nova has entered a puppet into this tournament. Now, I know I never said no puppets allowed but I'd like to give everyone a fair chance at winning, so I'm saying now, no puppets. And thus I am ejecting Da WhoseLine People from this tournament, to be replaced with my A squad, cos my U21s are exhausted after FNI3. ;)
