World Cup Introduction:
For more information on the World Cup, its History, how it works, who runs it, and the competitions related to it, check out the World Cup Wiki Site (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/World_Cup).
The NSWC is a tournament for any NS nation who signs up. This World Cup is about to start its 29th competition, and your nation can take part! Every team is given a rank based on their performances in previous Cups, and the starting rank is 210ish (the Current 'best team in the world' is Bedistan, with a rank of 1) See: KPB Rankings (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/KPB_ranking_system)
Scores are generated using either a Java program or through various or MS Excel sheet 'scorinators' which use random numbers, weighted by ranking and RP bonus to produce the scores.
It is encouraged for Nations to RP - roleplay - their matches, team rosters, players and such. Good RPs will help raise your chance of winning (especially in the Baptism of Fire and Colony Cup). Please note: A lot of RPs does not guarantee goals or wins, but your chances are improved or this happening. i.e. Two debutant, Rank 150, nations play each other. One has RP'd a few times, the other has not. The nation who has participated should have the better probability of victory, but still has a chance of a Win, Loss or Draw.
RPs can be Team Roster announcements, fan comments, press conferences, media stories, anything about the game, as long as you've kept to the score as posted or TGd to you by the host/scorer.
For any other questions you may have, please see the World Cup FAQs article on NSwiki. (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/World_Cup_FAQs) - Courtesy of Starblaydia
The longest-running sports-competition in NationStates reaches its 29th tournament: the Football (Soccer) World Cup. Please do specify if you have not participated before.
If your nation is new to the World Cup, you will be able to take part in the preliminary Baptism of Fire Cup (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/Baptism_of_Fire) competition.
If this is your first Cup, please indicate whether you wish to be registered for the Baptism of Fire or not.
Puppets have to post with their nation and identify their master. One Puppet per Master nation, and you may only enter a puppet once you have already competed in a World Cup'

Scoring is based on a formula that factors in ranking, roleplaying and yes, randomness. These formulas are run in Excel or in a specialized application file at the discretion of the hosts, who are also responsible for ensuring that the formula doesn't produce either a completely random Cup or one in which new nations ahve no shot at getting ahead.

how about a one-off extra-large world cup to celebrate their being an ACTUAL tournament taking place during this one?
40 team finals tournament anyone? 120 in the qualifying tournament?
Could easily have twenty groups of six teams with the top two going through to the finals. The finals tournament would have 10 groups of four with the top team and best six second-place teams progressing to the second round. Or something.
Maybe even a straight 128-team knockout, F.A. cup style :)
I appreciate that most people will disagree with me, but i think we should do something special for this world cup. Just a one-off as a homage to the tournament to which this game-in-a-game owes so much :)

Not the structure, the special thing should be the attitude. Celebrate that we're all playing a game and drop the bitching, the moaning, the whining and the irritation.
RP our asses off, and RP well. Forget the newspapers and do something... special.
For those that this means something - anything - to, just make it special for everyone else.

I think we should definitely not put a cap on the amount of teams participating until we actually begin qualifying, after which no new teams will be allowed (obviously). We should easily be able to reach 120 or more teams by then. I think we should also encourage more in-depth RPs, rather than simple newspaper headlines like Star said. Obviously we can't require that but we could suggest to the eventual hosts that a bonus RP point could possibly be given for non-standard/creative RP formats, as an incentive.

Bump!
Official Request from the Cute Bunny Burger Corporation
To Whomever It Concerns
Dear Sir!
As you may or may not know, the Corporation currently maintains a wide presence in a variety of areas. We also sponsor soccer teams and events. As such, we are offering to sponsor the World Cup. Here are the details:
The Cute Bunny Burger Corporation will pay 100 million Universal Standard Dollars for the benefit of the World Cup Committee to be used as the Committee sees fit.
All security will be provided by CBSF personnel free of charge.
CBBC will set up branches in the stadium buildings to sell food and beverages during, before, and after the matches.
CBBC will be allowed to use the WC logo on its products to denote it’s sponsorship of the World Cup.
CBBC will purchase, of its own funds, 2,500 tickets, of these 500 will be given to CBBC employees and the rest used as part of customer-incentive programs.
We hope you will find these terms agreeable.
May the sun never set on the Golden Bunny.

I'm assuming that you haven't been in the WC before (Which I think is a valid assumption), but you are very welcome to come and Join the Baptism of Fire... aka BoF.
The BoF is a tournament where all new nations to the world cup get to compete and get a ranking score before the actual world cup starts which helps you during the World Cup.
RPing receives a bigger bonus in the BoF than the WC as only RP sets each nation appart... oh that and the randomness of the scorinator.
I'll be co-hosting with legalese... do you want to sign your life a... I mean join the Baptism of Fire?

"Well, what do you call this group of monsters, eh?" asked Alexander Truman, wheelchair-bound hero of many a World Cup past, as he drew his eye over the newest Iansislean national football team.
"They are the corpses of Iansisle's old hockey team which I reanimated in an attempt to win the Cherry Cup and get back the Entire GNP of Iansisle™, which was lost a Cup or two before that," replied Ashlee Langdone the Necromancer with an airy distance.
"And you want them to play football?" asked Truman, one white eyebrow arching.
"Why not? The undead can be trained to play hockey; they can certainly be trained to play football."
"I'm not quite sure you understand the natural grace and years of physical training which --"
"Never mind. You will teach my minions how to play football. With the long pause in the Cherry Cup, my options for winning back two Entire GNPs of Iansisle™ are becoming limited. You will teach them well, Truman, or you will join them." With that ultimatum, Langdone vanished in a cloud of smoke. EVIL smoke.
"Well, I did always want another shot at coaching the Ians," Truman said to himself.
"Coach!" hissed the reanimated corpse of Martin St Amour, holding up a football. "This puck seems to have suffered some sort of accident. Not only has its lovely black surface been corrupted with traces of white, but it is annoyingly large and spherical. I demand you rectify this!"
"Just like falling off a bicycle," sighed Truman.

1) talk about this in another thread, maybe even the World Cup Discussion Thread, as this is a Football Sign-up thread
2) Don't bring back the Cherry Cup for a 19th edition, have something new that isn't a 'World Cup of Ice Hockey'. Make it 'The Queen Susan Cup', 'The Iceburg Trophy', 'The Dwarven 5-Time Walkover', 'The Undead Gulls Massacre', or something equally appropriate.

Well, put simply...Jolt's "thread tools" work when they want to (rarely) for whom they want to (almost nobody), and unfortunately there's not much you can do about it. :(
Though I thought posting in a thread automatically subscribed you to it anyway...is that no longer the case?

go to your user control panel and somewhere in settings there is a drop down menu that controls whether or not you subscribe to threads when you post on them. Change that to whichever type of subscription you like and then post in here again.

Bostopia would like to enter it's first World Cup. Bostopia would also like to enter the Baptism of Fire if at all possible.
In the interest of even groups, we're currently looking at a 122 team cap, in order to have 15 eights in qualifying. Unless there's some giant rush in demand which could push us to 137, of course.

Will correct.
New sign-ups hurry as there might only be 4 (or less/more) places for you to fill before WC29 sign-ups close.
If you do miss the cut-off point though, stay around for World Cup 30 :)

*General Minimus Proboscus the Younger (38 years old. Well, technically, 38.1 years old) stands foresquare atop the marble steps of the Senate, attired in the familiar (?) Imperial Purple full dress uniform of the Praetorian Guard, which he commands. Far to his left, and mirrored to his right, a squad of Praetorians, armed and in battle dress, stand at the foot of the two massive columns supporting the portico roof. Minimus Proboscus (the Younger) scans the crowd of reporters gathered before him. Raising one eyebrow, he tilts his head downward in an attempt to glare at them - causing his helmet to slip down over his eyes and collide - accompanied by an audible "bonk" - with the bridge of his nose. His nose acting as a fulcrum, the helmet of General Minimus Proboscus (the Younger) tips forward and away from his head, and continues it's downward trip towards the marble steps. About halfway along the chin strap catches on his belt buckle, causing the helmet itself to swing - you saw this coming, didn't you? - in towards his...well, as this is a family program, we will say that his helmet swings into his "midriff..."
A microphone having been placed before General Miminus Proboscus (the Younger) - it being in the "on" position - allows the gathered crowd of reporters to hear*
"...urk..."
*followed almost immediately by*
"...gack..."
*and finally, as the chinstrap slips off the belt buckle and finishes it's journey to the steps*
clonk
*during the silence that follows, General Minimus Proboscus (the Younger) gathers "himself" together, takes a moment to retrain his lungs in the art of breathing, then (rather painfully) bends over and retrieves his helmet. He places in, rakishly (he thinks) back on his head (covering the bald spot entirely). As he accomplishes all this, the gathered reporters take time to study the architecture of the Senate building, the leaf pattern of some nearby trees, the cumulo nimbus clouds drifting by overhead, passing pedistrian traffic - in fact, anything but General Minimus Proboscus (the Younger). at length, drawing (carefully) a deep (painful) breath, General Minimus Proboscus (the Younger) speaks into the microphone - in a voice pitched ever so slightly higher than usual...*
"Is this thing on...?"
*an aide, also attired in Praetorian Full Dress (and wisely carrying his helmet) hurries to the side of General Minimus Proboscus (the Younger) and whispers something in his left ear*
"Oh. Well. So it is. Thank you, Major."
*the major nods, glances at the gathered crowd of reporters, and whispers something else into the left ear of General Minimus Proboscus (the Younger) (we will continue using this pathetic little "nominative" joke through-out these proceedings, and most probabaly the entirety of World Cup 29. feel free to ignore any number of the repititions), glances once again at the crowd, nods in a military manner towards his commander, stumbles only once as he executes an about face, and marches prettily off. we will not see the major again today - it is 10:00, and he has a 10:30 tee-time.*
"Ah...the good major has...um...reminded me that we called this...um...what's it...er...oh, yes - Press Conference to annuitize...er...anonymous...um...annex...fudge! I know it's "an"-something..."
*a corporal detaches herself from one of the detachments (clever, eh?) and rushes to the side of - yes, here it comes again - General Minimus Proboscus (the Younger). she whispers something - into his right ear - and quickly retreats to attach herself to her detachment*
"ANNOUNCE!! To announce that our National Football Team will represent Snub Nose 38 Point 1 in the 29th edition of the World Cup."
*there is an expectant silence. it is followed by a slightly uncomfortable silence, which itself is followed by an embarrassed silence (here the writer pauses to check the spelling of "embarrassed" and finds that, yes, all those "r"s and "s"es do belong in there). finally, realizing that General Minimus Proboscus (the Younger) has nothing further of interest to say (a state they are all rather used to), the reporters begin to disburse. at which point General Minimus Proboscus remembers he does have something else to say*
"Um...just...I mean...if you please...a moment..."
*the remaining reporters stop, and turn to face --- yup --- General Minimus Proboscus (the Younger) expectantly*
"Say...guys...um...there used to be a...well...a place where we could...um...post informational um...information...and, well, ask each other questions and...dispatch...um...disgrace...ah...disingenuous..."
*the red-headed corporal bravely runs forward, coming once again to aid her commander. she quickly whispers (again, using his right ear) something, and just as quickly retreats*
"DISCUSS!! To discuss various aspects of...uh...World-Cup-ery. Well, you see, the point is, we...that is, Snub Nose 38.1...well, we can't get there, you see. Don't know where it...is? Used to be? Anyway, we would certainly appreciate it if...uh...someone...anyone...could direct us there. If there is still a there there..."
*the silence that follows is sufficiently long for all the remaining reporters to take their leave - and for us to take ours, as well*

Quakmybush - with 120 + participants starting in the World Cup Qualifiers, and only 32 "going through" to the actual World Cup - the Qualifiers basically IS the World Cup for about 90 of us. Not to worry - when WC 29 Qualifiers are over, and WC 29 itself is underway, there is usually a Cup of Harmony Tournament, for those who failed to qualify, RPed their butt off, and want to "play" some more until the Qualifiers for WC 30 come 'round.
So - wait for WC 29 Qualifiers to start - RP your butt off - and then sign up for the CoH when it opens up.
Good luck, and enjoy. It's all about the fun. ;)

At the distinct risk of being forcibly exiled (can you be exiled non-forcibly?) to Elba, I shall nevertheless point out that you've still spelled it "grammer" in the edit summary.

A plan having been drafted to exile Bedistan to the Isle of Elba, a cost-analysis was ordered, accomplished, a report drafted, edited, and presented to the Executive Board of the Ministry of Re-emerging From a Damp Grave, Sub-Marine Affairs, and Paper Towels. A number of colorful charts and graphs (unintelligible, but pleasing to the eye) were on display during the presentation. It was noted that someone had caused to be included in the report quite a bit of what can only be termed "Useless Information". Oddly, band-aids were passed out to the board members during the presentation. No one knew quite what to make of that - although there were a number of suggestions - which, in the interest of maintaining a "G" rating, can NOT be detailed here.
After the presentation the board retired into executive session. When they emerged, a little over two hours later, it was to announce that installing and using several million hydrolic jacks to raise the former Frost Free Borderlands of Snub Nose 38 from beneath the sea, followed by a thorough dredging of the aforesaid soaked nation, replacing its infrastructure, and raising-from-the-dead the national population, was deemed to be just a bit too expensive when weighed against the benefit of being able to exile the nation of Bedistan to the Isle of Elba.
But only just...
By the skin of your teeth, Beddy - by the skin of your teeth... ;)

Starblaydia,
As you are the chairman of NS World Cup i felt it appropriate to ask you this question. My main nation (New-Lexington) has been banned. Do I have to start over or can Zychibastan slide into New-Lexington's ranking and world cup spot?
Zychibastan will not slide into New-Lexington's ranking, they will begin again from 0 like any other new nation. Nouvelle Angleterre is at the top of the reserves list, so should any nation cease/withdraw/be deleted, NA will slide into that spot.

Correct. WC29's BoF has started, and if you compete in WC29 you won't be eligible for WC30's BoF.
