D&S Tops At Pre-Season Classic

WCCL Cross-Country 5K action got underway today in New-Lexington at the Pre-Season Classic. In this new sport for the NationStates world, 6 nations sent teams of seven to compete and forge the basis for a great league for a long time to come.

The seven-man team from Dorian and Sonya came into the season with a ton of questions to be answered. Everyone in the Kingdom knew just how good these guys were at home - now to test their abilities against the best in the world.

The race started off at a very quick pace and 2 of the Kingdom’s runners stayed close to the front. Manuel Santiago would set his pace just behind Abdul-Assad Mbulina of Arlibastan. Content with the position, he let Mbulina do all the work as he strategically drafted him for the majority of the race. It was the final 600 meters where Santiago would make his move, and end up with a victory of 5 seconds.

Alexander Nikoli did not have the same success in his effort to stay with Santiago. A late surge by New-Lexington’s Will Belue relegated Nikoli to the 4th place finish. Marcus Kilton finished 11th as the top 15 runners all ran below the 14 minute mark.

Here are the official times and placings of the Kingdom’s runners:
1 Manuel Santiago 13:08.61 *
4 Alexander Nikoli 13:18.17 *
11 Marcus Kilton 13:51.26 *
16 Coby Shankton 14:01.61 *
22 Dante Espen 14:47.60 *
38 Deshonn Priutt 16:33.97
40 Leonard Tchiakovsky 17:01.73

* indicates placings used for team score

The 54 points earned today marks D&S as the team to beat here in the WCCL, but New-Lexington has earned a target as well with 60 points. All 4 other teams ranged from 87-89 points. Good luck to everyone participating as the WCCL moves forward with its very first season.

ASMV Struggles in Pre-Season Classic

ASMV was prepared for the first Cross-Country event ever as best they could be. The best 5Krunners in the nation had been assembled for this team, and one word stood out - balance. With some of the Marqis names that had been sent by other nations would prove hard for anyone to break into the top spots. ASMV’s approach would be to try to control the middle of the pack and placings and therefore have a chance.

Tnat plan nearly worked to perfection. Nearly. Placing two runners in the top ten (Maurice Rollins and Timbu Obanwa) was exactly what we had hoped would happen. Having Clyde Frogbottom finish top 15 was a bit of a surprise. Where did the plan go wrong then? Easy answer. The bottom 4 runners failed to produce. Jessie Prince and Lucas Dvordacek both fell off dramatically near the end to finish 27th and 28th. Jesus Esparito struggled after turning an ankle in the first 1600 meters, and Tony Lavalais didn’t really accomplish anything at all.

The results saw ASMV well behind Dorian and Sonya and New Lexington (33 and 27 respectively) with 87 points, tied with Arlibastan. Esparito finished 3 spots ahead of their 6th runner thus giving ASMV 3rd place for the event.

Now we know what to expect and will have to hope for some luck if we want to contend with the two frontrunners. If we are not careful we could very well end up in last place.
