Gehenna Tartarus

Erebus International Airport was a hive of activity on a normal day, with ground staff rushing around making sure that everything ran smoothly, so that people using the airport could get to their destinations with little fuss. It was even worse at that moment, as their numbers were increased due to the imminent arrival of a visiting Head of State.
Security was high, not only to protect the Emperor and Empress of Excalbia, but also the Empress Gehenna, who was meeting the couple in person. The area around the landing spot of the Imperial plane was checked on a regular basis, which frequent patrols wandering around, making sure everything was in order.
Members of the ground staff were running around like headless chickens, yet there remained about them a sense of knowing what they were doing, just the casual observer would notice a kind of nervousness in the air. These people had a sense of pride in what they were doing, and they were not going to have any mistakes while it was their shift. They were going to make sure that the Imperial visitors received the best reception they could get.
On the tarmac, already gathered were the behind the scene people, or those that made sure that every little detail had been covered. They had been talking for weeks to their counterparts in Excalbia, making sure that both sides were following the same song sheet. They had to know the Imperial couples likes and dislikes, special needs and everything that would make them feel at home away from home, while not losing the feel of being in Tartarus for the first time.
A show of military and other officials were lined up near a red carpet, which currently ran from the main building to a spot of tarmac, but would eventually guide Emperor David and Empress Elizabeth their airplane to the waiting vehicles that would whisk them towards the Ewige Verdammnis Palace, the seat of the Tartarian Imperial Family.
As the final preparations were made, the people outside prepared for the arrival, making sure that they would all be ready for their guests.

“Who would have thought that Cousin Marissa’s marriage would have brought about new relations for Tartarus?” Lord Nefarious’ voice drifted over to the young woman standing before the window, gazing out over the preparations taking place below. “I can see now why you allowed her to marry His Majesty, High King Owain of The Resurgent Dream.” He paused, standing slightly behind her. “Are equal fates planned for the rest of us, Your Majesty?”
Gehenna let out a low, inaudible sigh, before turning around to face her heir. “Damien, I am not sure I could hate anyone enough to punish them with marriage to you, but if I do, you can consider yourself betrothed to them.”
The man laughed. “Ah, Gehenna, that is what I love so much about you, your sense of humour.” He looked over her shoulder out of the window. “And do you think that you can win the Excalbian Royals over to your side? Do you think they will be interested enough in us to want more contact?”
Smiling, Gehenna looked into Lord Nefarious’ face. “We shall see. Marissa spoke very highly of Their Majesties in her letter of introduction. I can only hope that they are as keen to meet us as she made reference to. Of course, I am not sure exactly what they know about the Empire of Tartarus, but I doubt we will have to wait long to see whether they find our nation to their liking.”
Almost as if on cue, a man suited in grey approached the couple and waited for the Empress to give him permission to speak. “Your Majesty, we have been informed that the Excalbia airplane is on its final descent. They should touch down in a little over ten minutes.”
Once his message was delivered and acknowledged he left, leaving Gehenna and Lord Nefarious alone once more, though around them the room had burst into activity, with various officials beginning to perform their duties. It was not long, before the room began to empty.
* * * * *
The plane pulled to a halt, and was greeted with enthusiasm by the ground staff, who rushed around making sure that everything was ready for the descent of the Imperial visitors. The security people were on high alert, there eyes scanning the area as they talked to each other, barely audible to those around them.
Empress Gehenna and her companion, Lord Nefarious stood waiting on the red carpet, a little way from the plane, barely visible to begin with, due to the presence of security around them. These parted as they reached their spot, though they remained close by.
The young, dark haired woman smiled, waiting for her guests to make an appearance and be officially welcomed to Tartarus.

Empress Elizabeth cast a worried eye on her husband. He looked so thin, especially in the face, and his new blond and grey beard, though neat and trim, reminded her all too much of his long illness. Of course the Imperial physician had given him a clean bill of health and cleared him to travel. However, that was small comfort to Elizabeth, who still shuddered at the thought of how close she had come to losing her husband.
Emperor David felt his wife's gaze and turned, gesturing for her to join him with a smile. Elizabeth returned the Emperor's smile and walked across the compartment to take a seat beside him. She slipped her hand into his and he held it tight, reaching across with the other to clasp it.
"You look worried, my dear," David said, his voice sounding a little deeper and softer than it had before the heart attacks.
"I'm sorry, David…"
"There's no need for that," David said lifting one of his hands to the Empress' cheek. "It's only natural for you to worry. But, really, I am fine. And with Joseph in charge of affairs at home, this really is a good opportunity for us to see a bit of the world and make some new friends." The Emperor smiled. "And I promise that this will be stress-free adventure."
The Empress smiled. "I'll hold you to that, David."
An Imperial Air Force sergeant stepped into the compartment, bringing the conversation to a sudden stop. "Your Majesties," the young woman said coming to attention and bowing deeply, "forgive the intrusion." The Emperor and Empress nodded and the sergeant continued. "Colonel Petersen is pleased to inform you that we are on final approach to Erebus International Airport and the Tartarian capital. The colonel requests that your Majesties prepare for landing."
"Thank you, Sergeant," the Emperor said, as he reached into the deep leather seat and retrieved the end of a seatbelt.
Several moments later the blue and sparkling gold Boeing 777 touched down on the tarmac and began taxing towards the waiting red carpet and the gathered dignitaries. After the plane rolled to a stop and the stairway had been put in place, the forward passenger door opened. Four blue uniformed Imperial Guards stepped through the door and stood at attention at the top of stairway.
The Guards stood motionless for a beat, then snapped crisp salutes as a tall man with blond hair and a trim graying beard emerged from the plane. The Emperor’s white naval uniform gleamed in the sunlight. He turned and held out his hand for the Empress. She took her husband’s hand and joined him at the top of stairs. Her red hair was done up in a sophisticated style and she wore a shimmering blue dress of conservative cut.
Standing hand in hand Emperor David and Empress Elizabeth waved from the top of the stairs, then began a stately descent.

Gehenna Tartarus
28-04-2006, 21:03
Waiting at the bottom of the steps for the two Excalbian visitors to descend, Gehenna allowed herself a moment to take in the man and woman as they approached her. Her cousin, Marissa had spoke very highly of the couple and Gehenna could remember her mentioning how friendly the two had been on the day of her wedding to High King Owain of the Resurgent Dream.
As the party drew closer, Gehenna smiled brightly, first offering her hand to Emperor David and then to Empress Elizabeth. Her blue eyes flicked between the Imperial couple as she addressed them. “Your Majesties, it is an honour for me to welcome you to the Empire of Tartarus.” She paused for a moment as her cousin stepped forward as if on cue. “I would like to introduce His Imperial Highness, Prince Damien, Lord Nefarious, my cousin.”
Following Gehenna’s example Nefarious greeted each of the guests in turn, beginning with His Majesty the Emperor and then his wife. He spoke little other than general words of welcome before once more allowing the Empress to take control. “I hope that your journey was comfortable.” Her eyes flicked briefly to Emperor David as she spoke, having been informed of his recent health problems, the schedule for the visit was relaxed with room for changes depending on the needs of the Excalbians.
“I have a car waiting, which will transport us to the palace.” She did not turn to indicate the vehicles as she was sure that they were visible enough, instead she kept her attention on her guests.

The Emperor took Empress Gehenna’s hand, bowed at the waist and kissed the air above it. Such gestures were not typical in Excalbia, where a nod or bow sufficed in most cases, but he had seen that they were well received in most other countries. Particularly by the nobility. In turn, Empress Elizabeth took Gehenna’s hand and curtsied.
“Your Majesty,” David said pleasantly, “thank you for your warm welcome. The Empress and I are most pleased to be here in Tartarus.” As Prince Damien stepped forward, the Emperor and Empress bowed slightly. “Your Highness,” the Emperor said to the prince, “a pleasure to meet you.”
"A pleasure, your Majesty," Empress Elizabeth said to Gehenna, "you Highness," she added turning to face to Prince Damien.
The Emperor turned slightly after greeting Lord Nefarious opening a small passage between the Empress Gehenna and the stairs from Excalbia One. Two men, one an older gentleman in a slightly archaic black suit, and the other a middle-aged bearded man in a blue suit with a Roman collar and a rough metal cross around his neck, has descended the stairs just behind the Emperor and Empress and were waiting patiently at a discrete distance.
“Your Majesty,” David said with a smile, “may I present to you Lord Johannes Corman, the Imperial Chamberlain,” the older man bowed deeply to the Empress, “and the Rev. Christopher Lloyd, my chaplain.” The cleric bowed and then both he and Lord Johannes stepped back and the Emperor again turned toward Empress Gehenna.
The Emperor nodded as Gehenna asked about the flight. He could tell from the look in her eyes that she had heard of his long illness. “Yes, it was quite smooth. Frankly, it felt good to be back ‘on the road’, so to speak, after my illness and convalescence.”
“However, it is nice to be back on the ground,” Empress Elizabeth added with a smile.
David and Elizabeth nodded at the mention of the car. “Thank you, your Majesty,” Elizabeth said, “we look forward to seeing the palace.”

Gehenna smiled at both of the men as they were introduced, making a mental note of their names. She had been briefed before about who was visiting and now she had faces to put to the names. “Gentlemen, it is a pleasure to welcome you to Tartarus.” Her eyes lingered a little on the cleric before she once more turned her attention to the Emperor.
“One gets used to ones duty. Being able to resume after being taken away from it is always a relief. I am delighted that you were able to grant me your presence.” She laughed lightly at the Empress’ words. “I also know that feeling all too well. The end of a plane journey is always my favoured part.”
Gehenna turned slightly, falling in alongside the Emperor, and began to escort him to the car. Lord Nefarious waited for them to pass and then filled in beside the Empress Elizabeth, becoming her official escort to the waiting vehicles. The rest of the party fell in behind the four royals, with a member of the Tartarian delegation joining with one of the Excalbians.
As the procession moved down the carpet, Gehenna turned to Emperor David. “We have a small gathering prepared for dinner, mainly family and a few noted dignitaries,” she explained as they walked. “Tomorrow we have arranged a brief tour and time for discussions. The schedule for your stay has been kept open planned, so that you may alter any part that you need to. I want you to feel comfortable during your stay, and I know from experience that State visits can have a very taxing itinerary.”
Lord Nefarious, walking slightly behind with the Empress, was playing his part as joint host. “As this is your first visit to Tartarus, should you have any questions about the Empire, please do not hesitate to ask. I am here to make your visit as pleasurably and as informative as possible.”

The Rev. Lloyd felt Empress Gehenna’s gaze linger over him for a moment and gazed back curiously before gratefully stepping back into the shadow of the Emperor.
Emperor David walked beside Empress Gehenna down the carpet to the car. “That is very king, your Majesty,” he said in response to her description of the evening’s plans. “I look forward to it. And the tour sounds very interesting; I must admit that I am looking forward to learning more about your empire. While your cousin, the High Queen Marissa, has made quite the impression on Her Majesty and I, I must admit to knowing little about your empire.” He turned towards Gehenna and smiled gently. “That is a deficiency I am looking forward to correcting.”
A pace behind Emperor David and Empress Gehenna, Empress Elizabeth walked beside the Lord Nefarious. Nefarious, Elizabeth repeated to herself. An odd name for a lord, she thought. Especially one who seems as pleasant Prince Damien. “Thank you, your Highness,” the Empress said pleasantly in response to the prince’s offer. “I am sure we will be full of questions soon enough, once we have the opportunity to see some of the city. And, I hope, the countryside.” She smiled and winked. “You may regret inviting my questions before we are done.”
Lord Johannes and Rev. Lloyd followed the royal party at an appropriate distance as they all made their way to the waiting motorcade.
Gehenna Tartarus

Gehenna turned towards the Emperor as she walked. “I too am looking forward to learning more about Excalbia. High Queen Marissa has spoken highly of Her Majesty and yourself following her visit.” She smiled, as she paused just before the car, its doors open ready to accept the Empress and her guest. Behind, another identical car waited, ready to pull forward to accept Empress Elizabeth and Lord Nefarious.
“Emperor Erebus, my father, was very uneasy about opening the doors of the Empire. Since taking the throne, it has been one of the elements of the Empire that I have striven to change,” she explained. “We have welcomed the chance to acquaint ourselves with new nations, working towards building good relations. The marriage of my cousin Marissa to High King Owain opened up our relations with the Resurgent Dream and now I am pleased to say that it has given us the chance to meet.”
Once she finished speaking, she ducked inside the car, and seated herself as the Emperor joined her. The car pulled off slowly, allowing its sister vehicle to stop before Elizabeth and Damien.
Prince Damien smiled, his blue eyes sparkling with laughter. “Your Majesty, speaking of the Empire of Tartarus is a pleasure, and more so when the questions come from those interested in learning more about it. I assure you, there will never be a time that I will regret inviting you to ask.” He chuckled softly. “And if there is, you shall never learn of it. As our most honoured guests, I am totally at your service.”
He indicated for the Empress to step inside the vehicle, then followed her inside. As their car began to move off, the next in line pulled up to meet the next guests. The cars were met a little distance off by the full security escort, which would guide and protect the cars as they wound their way towards the palace.

The Emperor nodded and smiled as Empress Gehenna led him to the first limousine in the line of the motorcade. “It can be a difficult decision to open oneself and ones nation to strangers,” he said sympathetically. “Nevertheless, we, too, have been pleased with the results. And, among those of us who retain the monarchy, marriage has proven to be a wonderful vehicle for expanding diplomatic relations. We have gained much from the marriage of my son, Prince Joseph, to Princess Anna of Pantocratoria and of my nephew, Prince Peter, to Grand Duchess Gwendolyn of the Danaan High Kingdom.”
The Emperor’s smile broadened slightly into a look of genuine amusement. “In fact, considering that your cousin, High Queen Marissa, is married to the High King Owain, the brother-in-law of my nephew, we are already practically related.”
David bowed slightly as Gehenna entered the car, then followed, taking the seat beside her. He looked out the windows at the airport and the surrounding territory. "Your Majesty," he said as he settled into his seat, "will we be proceeding directly to the palace or will we have the see a bit of your capital on our way?"
Empress Elizabeth smiled and gave a slight bow to Prince Damien. "Thank you for your kindness, your Highness. I shall be sure to take advantage of your offer to tell me all about Tartarus." Reaching the car, she turned, uttered a soft, "Thank you, your Highness," and entered the limousine.
Once the prince was seated beside her, Elizabeth turned to him and tilted her head to one side. "If you do not object, your Highness, I think I shall make use of our trip to begin peppering you with questions. Of course, I read our State Ministry's official briefing on Tartarus, but it rather… brief. And awfully dry. I think it would be much more interesting to hear from you a bit about your country – its history, how it came to be and your view on its society…"
As the Emperor and Empress made their way to their vehicles, Lord Johannes and Rev. Lloyd waited for their car. "What do you think so far, Reverend," Lord Johannes asked in a whisper.
"They seem quite nice and extremely polite, my Lord," the clergyman said, leaning close to the elderly chamberlain. "Some of the… titles strike me as rather odd. And I couldn't help noticing that the Empress gave me an odd look…"
Lord Johannes nodded. "I recall the Empress remarking that the High Queen Marissa once observed that routine displays of religious faith, such as the Imperial Family praying at dinner, were uncommon here…"
The chaplain nodded. If that is the case, he thought, an emperor being accompanied by a clergyman must seem very odd to them indeed..
Gehenna Tartarus

As Lord Johannes and Reverend Lloyd climbed into their car, they were met by a young woman in a grey suit, her blonde hair blowing in the soft breeze. “Good morning, Lord Johannes, Reverend Lloyd. I am Rachel Sinclair, and I will be your escort to the Palace.” Unlike the Empress, her eyes did not linger so long on the member of the clergy, despite her interest. “I apologise for the less than formal greeting, but it was the intention of Her Imperial Majesty, Empress Gehenna to get His Imperial Majesty, Emperor David to the Palace without too much delay.”
She indicted the car, as the two leading vehicles made their way from the tarmac. “Please feel free to ask anything you wish to know,” she looked at the reverend and the lord. “I will try to fill in any information that may be of interest to you.”
Up ahead, in the first vehicle, Empress Gehenna sat back in the seat, making herself comfortable for the hour long ride from the airport to the Palace. She nodded her head and laughed lightly. “I admit that it had not occurred to me that our two families had such a connection, but it is a pleasant thought that we are not entering into this visit as complete strangers.”
She paused again as the vehicle pulled out of the airport complex, using a less congested route than the main entrance. It would add extra length to their journey, but they would save time travelling down less busy roads. The rear of the airport led into the countryside before hitting the main route fifteen minutes later.
“We are heading straight for the Palace, but the journey there should give you ample opportunity to get a look at Tartarus, even if it is not in too much depth. We have arranged a more in depth tour during your stay, with the inclusion of visiting some of our more interesting sights.” She smiled at the Emperor beside her.
“Erebus is an old city, dating back centuries, and is blessed with many original features and buildings from the different eras. Unfortunately we have lost some architectural treasures during one or two earthquakes, which have occurred during our history. But we have not experienced anything more than a slight movement of the ground for over one hundred and fifty years.” She explained to reassure her guest.
“Peppered indeed,” Lord Nefarious chuckled softly, as he made himself comfortable and turned towards the Empress. “Tartarus has quite a chequered history, one that is probably very similar to other nations that you have visited. We have fought battles over land, battles over religion and battles because one Emperor woke up in the wrong mood.”
He paused for a moment and looked out of the window beside the Elizabeth. “The society of Tartarus is an odd mix of the old and the new. The Empire has a strong grip on its traditions, some dating back centuries. We even have a celebration in the summer that has roots in Paganism.” He smiled, his eyes sparkling. “But I do not want you to think that the Empire worships Pagan gods, as I am sure that your Ministry has informed you that Tartarus does not acknowledge any formal religion, although there are tiny pockets of religions scattered about the entire Empire. You will even see cathedrals and churches during your stay; they have merely lost their primary usage.”

Seeing Empress Gehenna seemingly settle in for a long ride, Emperor David IV took the opportunity to make himself comfortable. He adjusted his sword so that it rested beside him and he pulled slightly at his cloak so that he had plenty of room to move.
He watched out the window as the car pulled onto what seemed to be a secondary road through a rear exit. Around him he could see the countryside, which seemed pleasant enough.
David turned back to Gehenna when she began to speak. He listened carefully and smiled. “That sounds very nice,” he said with a slight nod. “I look forward to the tour. Erebus sounds like an intriguing city; I have always enjoyed cities with a layered history. Our capital’s history goes back a thousand years, though it did not become a capital – or even a real city – until some four hundred and forty years ago. I would be pleased to hear more of your capital’s history, your Majesty.”
* * *
Empress Elizabeth gave a small laugh at Lord Nefarious’ chuckle. He certainly seemed to be a man at ease with himself and others. “Really,” Elizabeth said in mock surprise, “an Emperor awoke in a foul mood and launched a war? Incredible.”
She nodded as her host spoke of traditions. “Traditions are quite important to us as well. As a nation, most of us were pagans a mere two centuries ago.” Elizabeth smiled pleasantly as she spoke, though she did absentmindedly reach for the small golden cross she wore around her neck. “Some of the lowlanders on the eastern coast, primarily in what is now the Autonomous Grand Duchy of Saxmere, had been Catholics since the 12th century, but my ancestors – the highlanders – were stubborn pagans and only converted at the dawn of the 19th century when the king’s son converted to Christianity and proclaimed the Holy Empire.”
She paused and looked briefly out the window at the passing countryside. “Lovely,” she said before turning back to Lord Nefarious. “However, I suppose we have made up for late conversion in the last two hundred years. Yet, despite being strong – some might say overly so – Christians, we still honour our traditions – Midsummer, for instance, is a holiday that is surpassed only by Christmas and Easter in its importance.” Elizabeth chuckled. “Why the Emperor himself will be expected to wear a wreath of oak leaves and preside over an all night festival.” She leaned conspiratorially towards Lord Nefarious. “To be honest though, he hates it; he finds the wreath uncomfortable and he gets terribly sleepy about half-passed midnight. Yet, he does it to honour tradition.”
Elizabeth’s face seemed to turn momentarily reflective. “Your Highness, you said that the churches have lost their primarily usage. Surely not all of them have desanctified; you said there were pockets of religion. So, are most of your people atheists? Was there once a substantial Christian presence?”
* * *
Lord Johannes and Rev. Lloyd both nodded slightly to the young woman. “A pleasure to meet you, Miss Sinclair,” Lord Johannes said.
“Indeed,” Rev. Lloyd added as he made himself comfortable in the car.
The Imperial Chamberlain nodded politely at Rachel’s explanation of the arrangements that had been made for their greeting. “Perfectly understandable, Miss,” he said pleasantly.
“Thank you for hospitality,” Rev. Lloyd added. “I do have a question, if it is not impolitic, Ms. Sinclair. I couldn’t help but notice that I’ve received some interesting looks from the official party. Are members of the clergy rare here in Tartarus?”
Gehenna Tartarus
24-06-2006, 19:13
Gehenna turned to Emperor David, having given him a moment to look at the passing scenery. Whenever she visited somewhere new, she always liked a moment to just sit and watch the sights go by without endless question. Once the Emperor spoke, she smiled and listened intently.
“Erebus has a lot of history, though very little under the title of Erebus.” She paused for a moment, hoping that she had not confused her guest. “The Capital was named after my father, the Late Emperor. It is a tradition in Tartarus that the previous head of the Empire is honoured in such a way. Once I pass from this world, the Capital will bear my name.” She broke into a more humorous smile. “Which I hope is not for some time.”
A brief frown passed over her face for a moment at the thought of the assassination attempt that had almost claimed her life a bare three years after her own father’s death.
Once the smile was back in place, she continued. “We have experience much in our history. This city alone has survived wars, rebellions, plague and even the odd earthquake. But you need not fear, the last was over one hundred and fifty years ago. During the tour, someone more versed in the history of the Empire will detail a little of its history.”
* * * * *
Lord Nefarious listened as the Empress spoke, intrigued that people seemed interested in Tartarus’ lack of religion. He had visited nations in the past, his own feelings similar but in reverse. He found the idea of conforming to the rules written in a book that had little or no evidence to prove the stories were actually true quite amazing.
“The Empire has religion, though this is confined to small groups of people,” he explained. “The people of Tartarus is not atheist, they believe in gods, they just do not worship one. Certain parts of the Empire had a more prevalent show of religion, but Emperor Abbadon finally banned religion at a national level and disbanded the churches, making it a crime to even worship gods openly. It is now not so frowned upon, yet at the same time, it is also not openly accepted.”
* * * * *
Rachel made herself comfortable, as she sat opposite the two members of the Excalbian party. “Reverend Lloyd, I admit that I was ready for your question. Tartarus’ lack of religion does cause some of our officials to look oddly upon members of the clergy, but I assure you, you are most welcomed in The Empire.” She smiled, trying to lighten the air. “We, as a nation, rarely look upon members of the clergy, unless they come from another nation. We do have some, they are not gone entirely, but they are basically restricted to small groups of worshippers.”
She paused, knowing that such things must sound strange to a man of the cloth. “There are some areas of the nation that has become more open to religion, once more seeing larger gatherings, but on a formal level, The Empire does not official acknowledge or conform to any religion.”

“Let us hope your capital will keep its name for many decades, your Majesty,” David said, returning the Empress’ humourous smile. However, when a frown flickered across Gehenna’s face, his smile faded. He worried something was troubling his hostess until he saw her smile return.
“It is quite an amazing history,” he said after she had finished summarizing the trials the city had faced. “I look forward to hearing more of it, your Majesty; history has always been a chief interest of mine. Much more so than politics, to be honest,” he gave her knowing smile, “though politics seems to consume more of my time.”
* * *
“Interesting,” Elizabeth said, nodding as Lord Nefarious spoke. “So, Emperor Abbadon completely banned public worship and religion in general? When did he reign? And, from what you say, I take it the ban has been rescinded?”
The Empress smiled politely. “I apologize if I seem fixed on this topic, your Highness,” she blushed slightly, “it is just that the Church is such a large part of our national life in Excalbia that it is rather… exotic… to see a country where it plays virtually no role.”
* * *
“Thank you,” Rev. Lloyd said to his guide with a polite nod. “Certainly you have made me fell welcomed.” He listened as Ms. Sinclair discussed the state of religion in Tartarus.
“So,” he said, “some areas have more practicing believers than others.” He rubbed his chin thoughtfully. “It sounds rather reminiscent of the Confederation – our neighbor to the east. They share our ancestry and much of our history, yet while religion remains one of the dominant forces in society in Excalbia, the Confederation is – on an official, national lever – a secular state. And, except for the state of Southland and the Autonomous Grand Duchy of Saxmere, society itself is largely secular and irreligious.” The clergyman chuckled. “Of course, even President Caine, despite his involvement in the so-called Order of the Invisible Hand, has never gone so far as to propose actually shuttering the churches…”
The minister smiled warmly for a moment, then leaned towards Ms. Sinclair. “So, Ms. Sinclair, what do you, as a typical Tartarian, think of us and our… rather obvious religiosity?”

Gehenna Tartarus

Gehenna nodded her head in agreement. “It is a shame that politics can not be achieved in less time. Unfortunately, it is a burden we have been born to, although it is also a blessing to be able to make a difference in one’s lifetime. And hopefully, in a way that makes one fondly remembered.” She smiled, as the car continued to wind its way towards their destination.
The airport was now safely behind them, and their entourage began to pick up a little speed as the vehicles reached a main road. The area around the road was less built up and cut a path across the countryside in a more direct route towards Erebus.
“If during you stay there is some aspect of the Empire you wish to learn more about, I am sure that we can work around your itinerary,” Gehenna looked at David. “It can be frustrating when one is shown only what the hosting nation wishes you to see. Tartarus has skeletons in its history, like most nations, and sometimes it is the skeletons that reveal the real face of a nation. Although, I hope that by the time your visit ends, you leave with a good impression of the Empire.”
* * * * *
Lord Nefarious smiled. “Your Majesty, I am more than happy to answer questions on anything you wish to know. I can completely understand your interest. If our roles were reversed, I would be questioning you on how your own nation worked with religion playing such a major role.” His eyes were filled with warmth and understanding.
“As for whether the ban has been rescinded. Let us say, that the law has been relaxed on the issue. It has never been officially lifted.” He paused for a moment. “I know that Her Majesty is hoping to look at the situation in greater depths in the future, and we might even find that the ban is lifted in her lifetime, but at the moment nothing has been done to change the situation.”
* * * * *
“Lord Johannes, you really know how to put a woman on the spot.” Rachel smiled warmly, showing her statement to be nothing more than humour. “Personally, I am under the belief that people should be allowed to make their own opinions on subjects, religion being one of them. I do not frown upon your nation’s way of life or think that your way is either right or wrong.” Always the diplomat.
“I have stepped inside a church and I have to admit there is a surreal sense of calm inside.” She smiled at the reverend. “I would like to see Tartarus reach a point where people can freely enter a church and worship. Maybe if it happens in our lifetime you will be able to come back and see it.” She paused for a moment. “But, whatever happens, I hope that you do not leave Tartarus thinking that we are without religion.”

Emperor David nodded towards his hostess, a reflective look on his face. “Indeed,” he said softly, “it is privilege to the position to bring about positive change.” His pensive look lightened into a smile. “And I am sure you will be remembered fondly by your people, your Majesty.”
The Emperor turned and watched the countryside roll past him, intrigued by the differences and similarities between his nation and Tartarus. He turned back to the Empress as she spoke. He smiled as spoke of skeletons and good impressions.
“You and your nation have already made a good impression, your Majesty,” he said with a nod of the head. “And as for skeletons in the closet, I have always found them rather interesting. And enlightening. We have quite a few of our own in Excalbia; several of them are preserved – so to speak – in some of our national parks. One of my favourites is the National Park at the Plains of Turaida. It is the site where the young Queen Hildegaard slew the pretender Gustavus – her cousin – in battle. Next to the park is Turaida Castle, which belonged to Gustavus’ greatest supporter. She turned it into a prison. And so it remains to this day.”
David turned and looked out the window. “As I mentioned, your Majesty, I am rather fond of history, so I would find it intriguing to visiting some of your historical sites. If that would be convenient.”

Empress Elizabeth listened carefully to her guide. She found Lord Nefarious intriguing. The name sounded so alarming at first blush, yet he seemed so warm and kind. “Ah,” she said when he finished, “I understand.”
She regarded her companion for a moment with a light smile. “So,” she said at last, “your Highness, I would be interested in hearing what you see as the important things a visitor should know about Tartarus. And her rulers,” she added with a widening smile.

“With or without religion,” the Imperial Chamberlain said in kind, grandfatherly tone, “Tartarus is certainly a land of hospitality and home to a people of grace and good humour.”
“I would certainly agree,” Rev. Lloyd said with a slight nod – first toward Lord Johannes, then towards Rachel. “And,” the clergyman added, “I apologize for turning the conversation so sharply towards religion.” He paused for a moment, the gestured with palm up towards Rachel. “Perhaps, Ms. Sinclair, you wouldn’t mind telling us a bit about yourself; I’ve always found one of the best ways to learn about a people is hear the people’s individual stories.”

Smiling as the Emperor spoke, Gehenna relaxed further into the seat, her eyes remaining fixed on David’s face. “It will be a pleasure to share some of our history with you, Your Majesty. There is nothing a nation likes more than regaling its guests with tales of its triumphs, although I assure you, The Empire of Tartarus is not afraid to reveal parts of its less savoury history.” She smiled, as she peeked briefly out of the window to see their location.
“We should be reaching the outskirts of the capital in ten minutes. You will notice as we pass through, that Erebus grows older the further we travel.” She smiled, feeling little need to explain that, but did so anyway. “The Ewige Verdammnis Palace sits upon a hill that overlooks the city itself. Parts of it date back centuries, as do parts of Erebus itself, but following several earthquakes and the additions made by several rulers over the years, little of the original building is visible.”
She paused for a moment. “We are currently carrying out reconstructive work on some of the underground passages that were destroyed in the earthquake of the 1840s. Of course, these have been postponed for the duration of your stay, as I would be greatly distressed to have the Palace collapse during your visit.” Her eyes twinkled, as she smiled.

Damien paused for a moment, to gather his thoughts. It was always a tricky question to answer, when someone asked him what he thought people should know about Tartarus. Should he stick with selling the nation, giving only its good points, which would leave the other feeling a little disappointed when they saw the place for themselves? He tried to look at the nation from someone else’s perspective, which was never easy, as there were stories about it that others would never know, and some were always too hard to remove from his thoughts.
“As for Tartarus, Your Majesty, I can merely advise that you enter it with an open mind and let it reveal itself to you.” Lord Nefarious smiled. “That may sound like I am trying to avoid your question, but in truth, I always find it much more rewarding to go somewhere with the barest amount of knowledge about it and let it show me what it has to offer. I would not wish to oversell – in which case, you might end up disappointed – or undersell – which might leave you wondering what I am afraid to share with you.”
He gave a little grin before continuing. “As to the rulers of Tartarus, I think that you will find that they are open and forthcoming. Some in the past have been a little crazy, but I assure you, Her Imperial Majesty, Empress Gehenna is of sound mind, and will do her utmost to ensure that you and His Imperial Majesty have the most pleasant and rewarding visit.”

“Oh, there is really no need to apologise. I have to admit, if the roles were reversed, I would be questioning you about religion too.” Rachel graced both Lord Johannes and Rev. Lloyd with a smile. “I am here to answer any questions that you wish to ask.”
She sat back in the seat and thought. “As for me, well, there isn’t really that much to tell. I grew up as the child of a government official, which is why I’m now doing the same kind of job, I suppose.” She laughed lightly. “I like to meet people and learn more about where they come from. I have an interest in what makes us all different, and I hope that during my lifetime I get to spend time in lots of different cultures so that I can experience living them.”

“As would I, your Majesty,” Emperor David IV said with a slight chuckled, “as would I.” Continuing in a jovial voice, he added, “I am relieved to hear that Palace’s structural integrity is sound.”
Slipping into a slightly more serious tone, he continued. “I wonder if your workers have stumbled across any interesting finds during their renovation work? When my grandmother wielded the Sword, a portion of one of the outer walls of the Citadel nearly collapsed, prompting some work to stabilize it and reinforce its foundations. Some remarkable discoveries were made – including a trove of damaged weapons and the remains of one who seemed to have been a human sacrifice placed under the foundation of the wall.” The Emperor gave a slightly sheepish look. “Of course, the Citadel dates back to the time when the Highland Kings were pagans…”

“Many have observed, your Highness, that madness does tend to run in many royal families.” Empress Elizabeth smiled mischievously. “Present company excepted, of course.”
The Empress turned and looked out the window for a moment before turning back to Lord Nefarious.
“Your point, your Highness, is well-taken. An open mind is always the best way to approach a new land. And a new friend.” She turned back to the window. “I look forward to exploring your nation and letting her reveal herself to me.”

“An honourable background and a noble desire.” Lord Johannes smiled in a rather grandfatherly fashion. “As the son of a government official, as you put it Ms. Sinclair, who followed his father’s footsteps, I see great nobility in carrying on a family tradition of public service. It is also quite admirable to want to learn more of other people and other lands. Why, in my younger days, I once harboured notions of serving in His Imperial Majesty’s Foreign Service…”
“Despite not realizing that dream, my Lord,” Rev. Lloyd said politely, “I’d say you’ve seen quite a few foreign lands and hosted a fair number of foreign leaders.”
“True,” the Imperial Chamberlain said with a nod.
“So, Ms. Sinclair,” the clergyman said, turning back to Rachel, “have you traveled to many countries?”
Gehenna Tartarus

“I believe other than retrieving the Emperor’s body, the area was left pretty much the way it was. Other than checking the structure, it was deemed by his son, Emperor Malominous, best to leave the site of his father’s death as it was.” Gehenna explained, her mind recalling the story. “Later generations have opened up the lower levels of the palace, my father, Emperor Erebus was most interested in discovering what lay beneath. I believe he discovered some less than pleasant artefacts.”
Several memories flooded into her mind, but she did not address them. She did not feel up to mentioning that the Empire’s own barbaric past was still prevalent under her father’s rule or that there were some pagan traditions the Empire still celebrated to this day.
“One day, I would like to delve more into renovating the palace. At present, running the Empire takes up most of my time.” She smiled, knowing that her companion would understand that feeling.

“I like to think that we all have a little madness in us,” Lord Nefarious grinned. “I think it is a touch of insanity that allows us to become individuals. Would a sane man throw himself out of a plane or climb a mountain?”
He followed the Empress’ gaze. “Of course, should there be aspects of Tartarus that refuse to reveal herself, I will endeavour to tell you what I can, Your Majesty. I want to make sure that you enjoy your visit as much as we are enjoying having you here.”
* * * * *
“I have travelled to a few, but recently I have been working at home, greeting and working with visitors to the Empire,” Rachel replied with a smile. “Of course, I hope to eventually gain a position abroad and have the time to live in a new culture, while working to build relations for Tartarus in the International arena.”
She flicked her attention between her two companions. “I hope that during your stay, I will learn more about Excalbia, especially as there are aspects of your society that are very different to our own. You might even inspire me enough to vacation in Excalbia.”

“Yes,” the Emperor said with a nod, “I quite understand.” He gave an odd little smile. “That is why in some ways I believe my heart attack was a blessing. It has given me a suitable excuse to name my son Princess Regent and give him many of the day-to-day responsibilities of State, while I take the opportunity to travel and visit new friends.”
David’s mind was filled with curiosity about the ‘less than pleasant artifacts’ found beneath the Empress Gehenna’s palace, but he could tell that his hostess was not prepared to discuss such matters in depth, so he stifled his natural curiosity and sat back to enjoy the rest of their trip.

“Thank you,” the Empress said to with a nod to her companion. She sat silently for a moment.
“So, your Highness, are you a parachutist? I have never jumped from a plane, but I have been mountain climbing and done a little hang gliding. Before I was an empress. Or a mother, of course. I have always wondered what it would be like to skydive.”

“I am more than happy to tell you anything you would like to know about Excalbia, Ms. Sinclair,” Rev. Lloyd said with a smile. “And we would be more than delighted to have you visit. I think you might find our country rather surprising in some ways.”
Gehenna Tartarus

The cavalcade continued through the streets of Erebus, finally turning into the road that led to the Palace gates. The guards, standing in their positions, barely moved as the occupants of the cars drove passed and continued their vigil as the new arrivals disappeared from sight behind them.
The drive from the main gate was long and both sides of the road was lined with trees, revealing only a little of the palace. As the car reached the end of the drive and reached the circle road that lay just in front of the building was its true splendour revealed.
As the car pulled to a stopped belong a flight of steps that were covered with a red carpet, a man appeared as if out of nowhere and pulled open the door. The warm air from outside seeped into the cool interior.
Gehenna stepped out of the car and stood nearby as she waited for the Emperor to join her. As she waited, the door to the Palace swung open, and a host of people appeared on the top of the steps, moving to one side of the doorway, almost like an honour guard. She turned slightly to face David as he reached her, to watch the car they had travelled in drive off allowing the second car to pull up.
Once again, a man pulled open the car door and stood back to allow the Empress Elizabeth and Lord Nefarious to climb out of the car. As they too joined Gehenna, they began the slow ascent up the stairs, while the third car stopped in the same position as the previous two.
“Your Majesties,” Gehenna addressed both her visitors, as they stopped outside the door. “I would formally like to welcome you to the seat of the Tartarian Imperial Family, the Ewige Verdammnis Palace.” She then guided them into the cool interior, where her formal portrait gazed down at them from the top of the magnificent staircase.

Rachel smiled at her two companions as their car pulled to a halt, as the Royal Families climbed the steps to the palace entrance. “I would most certainly love to learn more about Excalbia. Maybe there will be time during your visit.” She turned as the door opened, and waited for the reverend and the chamberlain to exit the vehicle.
The others in the party were barely halfway up the steps when Rachel and her party began the ascent. “I will be available during your stay, so if you have any questions or require any assistance, I will be your contact. I am available twenty-four hours, in case Their Imperial Majesties need anything.”

As the motorcade turned and passed through the outer gates of the palace, Emperor David tried to catch a glimpse of their destination. The trees lining the drive up to the palace allowed him to see only bits and pieces – a wall, a window, a few architectural details. It was only when the drive circled around in front of the building that he could see it clearly. It was magnificent. “Beautiful, your Majesty,” he said with a slight towards Empress Gehenna.
Once the car had stopped, David exited behind Gehenna and took his place beside her. Moments later, they were joined by Empress Elizabeth and Lord Nefarious. David traded a smiling nod with Elizabeth before they followed Gehenna and Nefarious in climbing the stairs to the palace.
David bowed deeply and Elizabeth curtsied in the Pantocratorian fashion in reply to Gehenna formal greeting. David held out his hand and once he felt his wife hand in his, he led her into the cool of the palace. “We are most delighted to be here,” he said pleasantly, “and look forward to our stay.”
Meanwhile, Rev. Lloyd and Lord Johannes were following the royal party up the stairs to the palace. The chamberlain nodded as Rachel said she would be available to assist them – or their Majesties – twenty-four hours a day. So, the elderly court official thought, she will be our primary contact for their Majesties’ needs. “Thank you, Miss Sinclair,” Lord Johannes said. “Fortunately, I believe you will find that their Majesties’ needs are fairly modest.”
Gehenna Tartarus

Gehenna led the way through the hallway, guiding her imperial guests through not only her home but her workplace too. Despite the duel purpose of the building, the two halves were kept separate and it was into the living area of the palace that she took them. Of course, the lower sections were kept for formal meetings and were always where visiting dignitaries were shown too.
Knowing what it was like when visiting other countries, Gehenna had left the first part of the greeting very informal. She disliked stepping straight into business and preferred a little time to get to know her visitors, and nothing achieved this better than in a private tea.
As they wandered towards their destination, Gehenna pointed out a few paintings and features that she thought would interest the Imperial couple. She took delight in explaining a little of the palace’s history, as the Emperor seemed interested in such things. Lord Nefarious remained alongside Empress Elizabeth, answering any questions that may arise, but mainly he remained silent, letting Gehenna conduct the conversation.
Finally the party reached large double door, which opened upon their approach. Two wigged footmen pushed the door, revealing inside the Blue Drawing Room, named for the décor. Inside were several sofas and chairs, all looking rather antique and uncomfortable, but which actually were not as rigid as they seemed. In front of the seats was a low table and off to one side a slightly higher one that was currently devoid of what it was intended to carry.
Gehenna stopped in front of one of the chairs and indicated the sofa. “Your Majesties, if you would like to be seated. I thought we would begin your visit with refreshments.”
As if by magic, as she finished speaking, the door to the side of the room, swung open revealing several members of staff carrying freshly brewed tea and coffee, plus an assortment of juices. On another tray, their came some light snacks in the form of biscuits, cakes and some small cut sandwiches.
* * * * *
“I am sure that all their needs have been fully anticipated, but I am here just in case,” Rachel replied, trying to reassure her companions that she was sure she would not be needed.
She followed the royal party though the building, doing her best to answer any questions that Reverend Lloyd or Lord Johannes had. As they reached the door to the Drawing Room, she paused.
“I am leaving you here for the duration of refreshments and will meet you later.” She indicated for the two men to follow the party in, standing and watching until the doors were pulled closed behind them.
Lord Nefarious took up her role inside the room, greeting the two men and indicating chairs for them to sit on, before he took his own.
