Sarzonia Stars

Coach: Brenda Campbell (43 years old). She had a strong playing and coaching career in Sarzonia’s women’s football league (the Sarzonian Football League), though her past few years have been away from the pitch as a member of Sarzonia’s Federal Trade and Commerce Committee. She was lured away from a position making twice her salary by the challenge of putting together a premier national football side.

Assistant Coach: Lacey Chastain (52 years old). Chastain recently came out of her retirement from the Sarzonian Football League to coach the Woodstock Justice, which finished last season third from the top, its worst-ever finish. Chastain brings a defence-oriented approach to her job in contrast to Campbell’s attack-minded concept of play.

SQUAD (Starters in bold). The team will play a 4-4-2).

GOALKEEPERS
1 Lisa Bridger (Portland Pride), (5’10”, 154 pounds), 32 years old. This veteran of 10 years in the Sarzonian Football League led the Pride to its first-ever championship after two years of falling short to Woodstock. She’s going to take the reins as the first starting goalkeeper due to her extensive experience in the pipes.
18 Karra Perkins (CD Nicksia), (5’11”, 161 pounds), 21 years old. She’s the eldest daughter of former Stars goalkeeper Troy Perkins and she has excellent footballing savvy, but she’s still somewhat inexperienced.
30 Georgette Scott (Real Portsmouth), (5’9”, 140 pounds), 25 years old. Another young goalkeeper to learn behind Bridger, she makes up for her lack of height with presence in the box and cat-like reflexes that allow her to get to balls that some taller keepers can’t.

DEFENDERS

2 Cammi Coyle (FC Tacoma) (5’8”, 133 pounds), 28 years old. The younger sister of onetime male Stars defender Mike Coyle, she brings some of the same speed to the pitch that Mike does and at her relatively advanced age, brings some of the experience he didn’t have at first.
4 Joanne McVeigh (Woodstock Justice) (5’7” , 143 pounds), 25 years old. Known as an excellent one v. one marker, she often marks the opposing team’s top forward. She spends enough time working out that she can get physical even when the Justice play friendlies against men’s teams. She leads the SFL in cautions and send offs.
7 Laura Barkley (Wilmington Warriors) (5’11, 150 pounds), 21 years old. Another physical player, she’s was often brought onto the pitch when the Warriors need to preserve a late lead until she cracked the starting 11 with six matches left in the season. The Warriors advanced to the playoffs for the first time in their history last season.
12 Beth Lockyear (Portland Pride), (5’6, 125 pounds), 31 years old. Captain. She was chosen team captain when Jenna Raven declined the nomination. Her experience makes her the best choice, as she played one season with the SFC (the Sarzonian men’s league).
18 Carla Hawkes (Joe Gibbs University) (5’5, 130 pounds), 27 years old. Another one v. one marker, Hawkes is often the first defensive sub for the men’s college team when she’s not in the starting 11. However, she plays most of her minutes with the women’s team and is a stalwart for the women.
23 Soriyana Ngolu (Zachary Taylor High School, Portland), (5’8, 144 pounds), 17 years old. Ngolu is unusual in that she is under the age of majority, but she’s recognised as a legal adult due to emancipation rules. She still has to finish her high school diploma to earn her way onto the team as a starter.

MIDFIELDERS
9 Jenna Raven (Woodstock)[/b] (5’8, 151 pounds), 26 years old. Has been a stellar player for the men’s national team for the past three NSWCs and should bring that experience to the women’s team.
10 Landra Tennison (Woodstock) (5’6, 133 pounds), 32 years old. She earned a spot in the starting 11 on the Stars for AOCAF VIII after an impressive tryout where she out-physicaled several men. She’s one of the old hands on this Stars side.
11 Rickie Willsie (Portland) (5’2’, 118 pounds), 22 years old. She’s often known as the little defensive midfielder who gets in the way of the skilled middies and has drawn more yellow cards than anyone in league history.
13 Darla Campbell (FC Tacoma) (5’4”, 140 pounds), 23 years old. Yet another youthful player on a team seemingly brimming with them, Campbell is no relation to the coach. However, she patrols the left wing like few other players on the team can.
16Wilhelmina Benson (Joe Gibbs University) (6’0”, 175 pounds), 20 years old. She’s arguably the strongest player on the team. She’d also be among the strongest players on a men’s team. The drawback is her speed isn’t where the other players in midfield are.
17 Kendra Gregory (unaffiliated) (5’7”, 155 pounds), 19 years old. She was declared academically ineligible for her college team so she quit university. She’s been trying to catch on with a professional side.
FORWARDS
14 Hannah Garcia (Portland Timbers, SFC) (5’11”, 170 pounds), 24 years old. She caught on with the Timbers after a SFL season in which she scored 32 goals in 20 matches. She tied for second in the top flight men’s league with 27 goals in 32 matches with a nose for the goal that forces men’s teams to mark her with bigger, faster players.
15 Vonnie Butler (Athletic Avalon) (5’8”, 145 pounds), 27 years old. The SFL’s leading goal scorer, Butler scored 23 goals in the newly-expanded 24 match season last year. She scored 18 goals in the previous 20 game schedule and takes free kicks most of the time for her club team.
20 Monique Pressley (FC Tacoma) (5’9, 150 pounds), 29 years old. Pressley scored 14 goals after missing the previous season due to pregnancy and earned her way into the starting 11 after the all star break in the middle of the season. She scored nine of her 14 goals in the last 11 matches of the season but her match fitness is a question mark for a full 90 minute effort.
22 Wilma Diaz (Portland Pride) (5’10, 147 pounds), 27 years old. [I]Diaz is known as a strong withdrawn forward and may be inserted into the starting 11 by Campbell after training camp finishes as a result. The team still has to figure out whether Garcia or Butler is more effective as a substitute.

====================

The womens game is not nearly as popular as the mens in Apologetic Kittens and this team has been dragged up from the nations lower leagues.

Coach:
Elinor Pickering (39): Famous as the first female player to ply her trade in the Kittens first division, she was the automatic choice for coach.

Goalkeepers:
Maxine Ullman (22): A series of great performances have earned this call-up as well as the number 1 shirt at her club.
Katrina Hunter (23): Another young stopper, she occasionally can't handle the big events. Most notably the fumble in her teams cup final match two seasons back.
Jaquelyn Stough (28): The least talented of the three keepers but the most experienced, she should hopefully have some advice for the others.

Defenders:
Mikki Eggbert (19): Despite her age she is showing a great presence at right back and should cause a few problems.
Rosella Eisenman (31): Strong at left back, she's as dependable as they come.
Rossana Adams (30): Despite her name often hitting headlines for non-footballing reasons she's still a top notch player.
Lenna Ullman (24): Playing just in front of her sister in goal should hopefully yield a strong partnership such as that shared by the Chase brothers in the mens team.
Eve Wolfe (27): Unable to force her way into the backline, she'll be waiting for her chance.
Aurelia Greene (20): A great all-round player, her time will come.

Midfielders:
Alison Ward (29, Captain): Strongest playing just in front of the defence it's likely to be her place here, allowing others their freedom and the placing to hold the team together.
Jennie Stanfield (28): Playing on the right wing requires skill and pace, qualities Jennies has in heaps.
Krystal Wible (18): Any pundit will claim this left-side position the weak point of the squad. With Krystal pulled from the fourth division she perhaps hasn't got the talent of the other players.
Marissa Ritta (15): Amazing young talent, she's already claimed the record for the youngest person to play in the Kittens top league, even younger than male prodigy Newman, expect her in the mens team in future and giving Monroe trouble for his place in the team.
Mari Perkins (27): Competent and willing, a great player to bring on in the dying minutes.
Angelica Ehret (22): Quick, agile, and not without a level of flair she'll be pushing for a first XI place in time.

Forwards:
Jocelyn Gettemy (30): Top scorer for her club for the past six seasons she shall hopefully bring that form here.
Dolly Giesen (31): Another consistant performer, hopefully she'll work well with Gettemy.
Florine Aultman (23): Sister of Kittens midfielder anton, she'll be hoping to show where the real talent in the family is.
Mandy Newman (25): No relation to the greatest ever Kittens player, and fans will perhaps see that as a shame. But her skill will talk for itself if she's given a chance.

we will use the same kits as in World Cup 27
Wentland
11-04-2006, 22:24
Wentland had only a nascent female football scene and the Powers That Be decided that Ethel Bluff, wife of men’s team manager Edgar, would be an appropriate choice.

Her first squad was made up of the best youngsters from around the country with a couple of older heads. The women’s league only had 6 teams at any decent level with a bunch of others making up the numbers but it was hoped that the early experience would assist in making a challenge in time.

One difference from the male squad was in the team kit. Ethel Bluff felt that the shirt should only bear a V when it had achieved something, so the home kit was plain royal blue shirts, white shorts and blue socks. Change kit was grey shirts, red shorts, grey socks. Very simple.

1 Philippa Forrester, goalie, 27, Atworth

2 Rachel Horne, right-back, 19, Newchurch

3 Ellie Crisell, left-back, 20, Newchurch

4 Anna Kumble, midfield, 23, Oldfield

5 Lucinda Rhodes, centre-half, 24, Warpstone

6 Chloe Ashcroft, centre-half, 33, Esford

7 Sally James, midfield, 34, Atworth (pioneer of women’s football)

8 Stacey Cadman, midfield, 18, Warpstone (absolute firecracker of a player, never seems to lack energy)

9 Thalia Pellegrini, centre-forward, 18, Newchurch

10 Gemma Hunt, centre-forward, 19, Esford (pocket dynamo, never without a smile)

11 Debbie Flint, midfield, 32, Oldfield (Olympic speed-skater, almost devious in her ballplaying ability)

12 Sara Elgan, goalie, 23, Oldfield (reputedly a better rugby player, safe hands)

13 Kate Sanderson, right-back, 27, Oldfield

14 Laura Jones, centre-half, 24, Newchurch

15 Heather Jones, centre-half, 23, Warpstone

16 Lizzie Greenwood, midfield, 23, Newchurch

17 Honey Weeks, centre-forward, 25, Oxton

18 Ellie Bevan, left-back, 18, Oxton (the two are half-sisters and superstitiously requested adjacent numbers)

19 ???

20 Pui Lee, midfield, 23, Vosburgh

21 Mo Sule, 19, centre-forward, Esford

22 Anna Boulter, 25, midfield, Oldfield

23 Anne Foy, goalie, 21, Esford (not tall, but a prodigious leaper, often with multicoloured hair)

It was only when she had picked the 22 that Ethel Bluff realised she needed another one. Unfortunately she could not think of any players good enough to fill a midfield slot. Go with one of the callow ones?

But when the team was training before flying out a strange figure loomed from the mist. Wearing a purple cloak and bizarre headwear, almost a wrestling mask, blonde hair flowing from behind.

"I have been watching your game. It intrigues me greatly."

"Sorry, who are you?"

"I am one who wishes to participate. I am Zoll."

"Well, Zoll, have you ever played before?"

"The manipulation of the spheroid is a mere trifle to one such as Zoll."

"Err...ohhh kayy..."

"See how Zoll controls the aether and projects the plastic towards the reticule suspended between the wood. It is axiomatic."

With that Zoll kicked at a spare ball and the Wentland team watched in wonder as it curved and swerved towards the goal. Anne Foy in goal had no chance.

"Er, well, Zoll, you have to be a Wentland citizen to be able to be part of the team."

"Zoll shall produce the requisite papers. If the Bluff has faith."

What else could be done?

Ethel Bluff filled in the paperwork for the organizing body...

19 Zoll, unknown, unknown, unknown

Stars off on right foot, 2-1

EASTENTOWN, Chicanada (ASP) -- Brenda Campbell put a lot on the line for this. During the first-ever game for a Sarzonian women's football team, she sat on the sidelines whilst the collection of 18 players for whom she cast aside a larger salary and job security to coach. For one night at least, her gamble paid dividends as the Stars got goals from each of their experienced women's national team players en route to a 2-1 win over Algal States.

While the other eight field players and goalkeeper were all feeling the jitters of their first-ever international game, midfielders Landra Tennison and especially Jenna Raven played with a cool composure that eventually made the difference for the Stars (1-0-0, tied with Milchama for first place in Group E). Raven, a standout player for the mostly-men's national team, took the first step toward being equally dominant for the women's team by scoring the first goal in Sarzonian women's team history just 16 minutes after the opening kickoff.

"I just wanted to keep everyone on an even keel," Raven said. "I told them it's okay to be nervous but the butterflies eventually go away. The goal seemed to settle everybody down." Following the goal, Sarzonia began to apply pressure deep in the Algal States end but could not score again in the first half and settled for a 1:0 scoreline at the break.

"We've got a chance to win if we continue to play well," Campbell told the players at the half. "We just need to finish our chances." They would prove their new coach prophetic at the 54 minute mark when Raven was pulled down just outside the 18 yard box and the Stars set up a free kick. Tennison waved off Raven and forward Vonnie Butler and cooly sliced the ball past the diving goalkeeper to put Sarzonia ahead 2-0.

Algal States would rally back in the 64th minute with a textbook counter, but their desperate attempts to draw level came up short thanks in large part to goalkeeper Lisa Bridger's five second half saves. The final score seemed to vindicate Campbell's decision to become the national team coach.

"I wouldn't trade this feeling for anything in the world," she said after the game. "Not a thing."

Hopes high as the world begins to figure out exactly who's good and who's not

The World Cup always has those who you expect to win.

The Women's World Cup? Well... names out of a hat might work.

An all-new competition means an all-new lineup, with players pulled from varying backgrounds to field a team.

My opponent, if they RP first, has permission to do pretty much anything they like. Don't kill anyone though.

After a long search, Rita Lerussi was named the Women's team manager. Pulled from national champion Shelby University's Women's Soccer team, was somewhat modest leading into the competition. "We're looking for a quality finish, but the team came together on short notice. But, we're still hoping that we can pull it together on the pitch and progress far into the competition."

Goalkeepers

Gaynor Rouble - 25, Big tall girl who also does Karate. Do not mess around with her or you'll be flat on your back, unconcious.
Betty Goldstein - 21, aka Bouncy Betty. Shortish keeper with largish breasts and tends to bounce around than just stand. Pinup girl for some boys.

Defense
Veronica Moshe - 24, not someone to take lightly. Hard tackler and very opinionated at times. Bad temper too.
Debbie Dallas - 26, not a porn star, but does already have two kids. Veteran for Christian Palestine women's team and is the captain. Likes alcoholic beverages.
Ketty Mosawu - 24, Arab female player. Wears a Hajab when playing.
Olga Putin - 23, immigrant Russian jew. Her former occupation was a pole dancer and she is very flexible.
Nien Holdstein - 27, the resident free kick expert. Also called "Missile Nien" as
she kicks the ball really hard.

Midfield
Penny Handi - 24, Bad record for handballs, but she's sneaky. She is assigned the task of throwing the ball into play as an irony.
Karen Cashu - 26, former gymnist. Good at aerial kicks and weird clearances.
Britney Meares - 20, talent so good she avoided the U21 team and got into the womens team directly. Smallist girl but can out-dribble the best U21 players.
Nancy Kool - 24, Harry Kool's younger sister. Talented like her famous brother.
Ahma Sishra - 25, quiet girl except on the football field.

Strikers
Tristan Tik - 24, tends to get free kicks as she trips over herself by accident. Sometimes her goals come that way.
Sally O'Hare - 25, Irish immigrant who played for the Irish womens team. More reliable than Tristan.
Mary Margaret - 23, called "Headjob Mary" because she scores 90% of her goals via headers, then these aren't woosy little headers either.

"So where is Zoll now?"

"Dunno, not seen her since we arrived."

"Well, she's not in the starting line up anyway. Out you go, girls, and good luck."

Luck was not much in evidence against Anastasiana. Two-down at half-time, the Swifts were being given a lesson in clinical finishing. And when a third went in in the 57th minute Bluff decided to do something.

But what?

She turned to send on tiny Pui Lee and the near-six-foot Mo Sule to beef up the team. But she had a massive surprise as Zoll was sitting there.

"And where the heck have you been?"

"I was absorbing protein chains."

"Well, it's too late now. Pui and Mo, you're on."

The board was held up to announce the substitution of James, who was running out of steam, and Pellegrini, who had never really got the measure of the Anastasiana defence. Lee immediately buzzed about midfield with energy and formed an effective partnership with blonde bombshell Stacey Cadman. Mo Sule immediately asked questions of the Anastasianans and went close with her first touch.

The first goal for the Swifts in women's football came in the last five minutes, when between them Lee and Cadman hustled the ball out of the opposition's possession and unleashed Gemma Hunt, whose right foot shot glanced off the post on its way in. Her smile grew even broader, but that was as good as it got for the Wents.

Annoyingly Starblaydia had won the other match, so after Round One the Swifts were bottom and three points away from qualifying into the next round. A draw would have been better...but still, early doors...

Today was the first match Swilatia's ladies had in the first womens world cup. It was against Apologetic kittens' women's football team.

The match seemed very long, as no goals were scored until after half-time. Swilatia was continously fighting the apologetic kitties so they could sscore a goal, and then finally got the first one. However Apologetic Kittens also got a goal a few minutes later, and then swilatia attempted to get the final winning goal.

However, even though it would be good if we did get it, we failed at it miserably. The stirker was not doing well against the onslaught of defenders and decided to trip one of them. She was then given a red card, and only a few minutes of the game were left, and neither our ladies or the apologetic kittens had the chance to score goal. The match ended with a 1-1 draw.

At least we did not lose the match. If you remember world cup 27, you will see how much a single loss can harm a teams qualification run. Not much of a problem if you lose just once, but once you lose 3 times, prefarbly 3 times in a row, you are pretty much dead unless you get a winning streak.

This seems to remind me of last years Swilatian championship. After Vilvek United lost to the Sayela Faries, Atlius Knights, and the Berral Wolves, they got won all their remaining matches an qualified, and even became the champions.

At least I hope we do not lose 3 times in our qualification run. We hope that Swilatia's Womens team will be the champions in the first NS womens world cup.

Well the girls did it and won thier 1st ever world cup match earlier today vs. Krytenia 3-0. The lady Oxen came out wearing their very revealing uniforms, Green and white skin-tight Lycra, and most of the male crowd was cheering for Qazox as Krytenia played in very drab shorts and tops. The scoring started in the 18th minute as Kelli Renoir, Captain of the Rockport University Lady Rockets, scorde off a corner kick, heading it past the Krytenian goalie. The hard-charging girls of Qazox wasted liitle time extending their lead to 2-nil when Kelli Renoir scored her 2nd goal of the match only 4 minute later in the 22nd minute. The rest of the half was back and forth with niether side getting much done. The second half started like the end of the first half, as for 35 minutes both teams attacked and counter-attacked each other with nothing to show for it. In the 81st minute, A yellow card was given to Olivia Garden, Of UNQ, University of Northern Qazox, for pulling a Krytenian player's hair. This foul seemed to awaken the Lady Oxen and in the 87th minute, Assistant Coach and Captain,Kylie Rena scored to make the score 3-nil and effectively ending the match.

Scoring:
Kelli Renoir (2)- 18, 22
Kylie Rena- 87

Stars outshine Wabbit-Chicks

EASTENTOWN, Chicanada (ASP) -- One team was making its Women's World Cup debut despite playing for a country that just didn't have much support for women's football. One team put forth a gritty effort and looked like they would make winners of their side in their inaugural campaign.

But the other team was the Sarzonian national women's team, one that already had one match under its belt and a victory to their credit. They scored twice in the final 10 minutes to snatch an improbable 3-2 win from the Wabbit-Chicks of Spruitland, courtesy of footballing veteran Jenna Raven's two goals and her assist on Landra Tennison's game-winner.

"Those girls certainly know how to play when the stakes are high," Coach Brenda Campbell said of Raven and Tennison. "The fact that both players have international experience at the game's highest level gives them a completely different mentality on the pitch than other players. I certainly hope it rubs off on the rest of the team."

Campbell had to pull something out of her bag of tricks when the Wabbit-Chicks rode a flurry of aggressive play to a 2-0 lead before the first half hour expired. Campbell nodded at reserve keeper Karra Perkins when she asked if she could warm up, but Lisa Bridger settled down and ended up making four saves.

"I think we just got caught flat-footed a bit," Bridger said. "They really pressed the issue from the opening kickoff and we had a bit of trouble matching their intensity at first, but we pulled it together."

The Stars (2-0-0, six points) got on the scoreboard just as first half injury time ended when Raven served a free kick into the area for a Hannah Garcia shot, which goalkeeper Justine Groothandts saved, but couldn't corral in time. Raven pounced on the rebound and banged it into the net for her second goal of the tournament. When the referee's whistle signaled halftime, the Stars knew they were lucky to go in trailing by only one goal.

"We dodged a bit of a bullet out there," Tennison said. "We've got to play better than that, especially defensively." The team picked up the intensity in the second half but could get no closer than 2-1 until the 80th minute when Raven headed a cross from Tennison past Groothandts to draw the score level at 1-1.

"That made it a whole new ballgame," Raven said. "We knew we still had time if we could win a ball in midfield and run a strong counter." The team made Raven a prophet by doing just that, as Raven skied for a head ball and sent it to forward Vonnie Butler. Butler worked a perfect nutmeg through the legs of defender Leslie Fasotte, then drew two players to her before slipping the ball to Tennison. With the defence focused on Butler, Tennison simply tapped the ball past Groothandts for a 86th minute goal that shocked the Wabbit-Chicks.

"We were leading and looking good, then all of a sudden, we're down 3-2," Fasotte said. "We've got to do a better job of closing the games out."

15-04-2006, 11:47
The Kittens Womens team played their first game on the international stage against Swilatia just a couple days ago now.

It must be admitted that much of the match was a dull affair, with neither team really threatening to score. That changed well into the second half as Swilatia left young Ullman with no chance to prevent the opening goal of the game.

However the Kittens didn't take the result lying down, and a lovely piece of footwork by Ward ended with a cross headed in by Gettemy. The Kittens were back in the game.

Swilatia thought differently and began what can only be decribed as an onslaught of the Kittens goal. Marshalled by Adams the defence was more than enough for the Swilatia strikers and even a late red card didn't tip the game either way.

Final score:

Swilatia 1 - 1 Apologetic Kittens

The girls did it again beating the New Montreal States women's team 3-2 earlier today. This match was as hard fought as any other match I've ever seen, but the Lady Oxen pulled out a last minute victory as Kylie Rena scored once again in the last 5 minutes to win for Qazox.

The match started with NMS in an unsual 2-6-2 style, one not much seen in international play, the extra midfielders seemed to throw the Lady oxen off at first as Genevieve Pilon scored just 11 minutes into the match. Head coach Lili Sterns then switched Qazox from its usual 5-2-3 to a 4-3-3 subbing in Danielle Childress for Pandora Boxx in the 15th minute a rather early subsitution. It paid off for the Lady Oxen as Julia Childress intercepted a long goalkick and weaved through the 2 remaining defenders, scoring her first goal in the 20th minute.

The remainder of the first half was spent by both teams trying to find a weakness to exploit, but niether side could take advantage of any openings and the 1st half ended in at 1-all. The second half saw NMS change its' style a bit as they changed to a 3-5-2, to attempt more offence as Sophie Dumont was subbed in for Lisette-Hilaire Vaubain in the 46th minute.

The subsitution proved costly to NMS as Kelli Renoir burst through the defence on a corner kick and headed the lead goal for the Lady Oxen in the 48th minute. With the lead, Qazox played conservatively to keep the lead, but a brilliantly lobbed freekick in the 67th minute was blasted by Sophie Dumont right over the outstreched arms of Alice Springs to tie up the match at 2-all. It stayed that way until the 88th minute when New Montreal States was the recipent of a bad call. Anne-Louise Gaultier was called for a hand ball in the penalty area when replays clearly showed that the ball never touched her arm. Kylie Rena promptly scooted the winning goal past NMS keep Anne Baxter on the ensuing penalty kick to end the match in favor of Qazox 3-2.

In other Group D action today, Virginia Nova made it's WWC debut losing to Becquerelia 2-1. Krytenia had the Bye. So after 2 matches of 4, the LAdy oxen are in first place, and with a win in either of its 2 remaining games, will clinch a spot in the Round of 16.

"How long left now, Marge?"

"Ten minutes...time to make a change now?"

"OK...nothing to lose...let's put Zoll on..."

"Now, Zoll, we need a point from this game so you go in midfield and we'll push Stacey up front to go with Thalia and Gemma. Understood?"

"Accepted."

The board went up and the tiring James went off. Zoll went on, purple cowl in place, causing some consternation with the fourth official who didn't know whether it was legal or not. But Zoll was on.

And her impact was immediate. First pass she received she beat two women and curled an impossible ball to Pellegrini, who made no msitake from 12 yards. One-all, game on.

The Starblaydis recognized a danger when they saw one and Zoll was promptly woman-marked out of the game. The tiring Swifts were desperately trying to hold on or to find Zoll but to no avail.

Finally, in injury time, with everyone back, it happened...

"Corner...keep this one out..."

"Oh, their striker's handled it..."

"Zoll's picked up the ball..."

"Hang on, what's he given? A penalty?"

"What about the handball?"

The Swifts were infuriated. "That was handball!"

"Yes, your girl picked it up, I hadn't blown the whistle. She's going in the book for that."

"Law 12 delineates the occasions on which a player may handle the ball. The Starblaydi striker handled the ball. Therefore the correct decision is a free-kick to Wentland. Zoll merely collected the ball for the free-kick. That is logically not hand-ball."

"I didn't see any hand-ball..."

"Then logically you are incompetent to referee a game."

"OK, that does it..."

On the bench the Wentland crew were aghast. "A red card! And a penalty in injury time! Oh, this is the living end..."

And it was.

Today Swilatia's ladies got thrashed by the team from FMJ Pheonix. we are doen at fourth flace in the qualification group. I cannot believe that this happened so soon. I just hope we will still make it to the cup. But we do not have that much of a chance of winning at all.

What?? Swilatia's ladies did not get thrased. the win was a simple 0-1, not a 0-6. Not much after the start, the first goal was scored, and then the enemy concentrated on defense. we were fighting to get a goal, but we could not get a goal. And its just a minor loss.

Yes, it is minor, but still damaging, as any loss is. are you really sure we really have a chance at this? I mean, it could be the world cup 27 qualification campaign all over again. We just lose too often.

How often is too often anyways. Could you tell me. because I think we can still get into this cup, and possibly become the champions.

Maybe its not that easy after all. The Lady Oxen were beaten 2-0 earlier today by newcomer Virgina Nova (ooc: sry if i've been misspelling it). both goals were scored in the firat half by VN's forward #3 (whose name was not on the roster). The Lady Oxen fought hard to get back into the match, but the third straight night of competition seemed to have worn the women out. The next match for Qazox will be against Becquerelia which may be for the group title. Hopefully the ladies can pull themselves together and win this upcoming cruical match.

In other group action, New Montreal States rebounded from yesterday's loss to beat Krytenia 2-1, while Becquerelia had the day off.

Debbie: Coach, where's the new uniforms!
Coach: They're going to be late. Hopefully they'll be here if we make the next round.
Debbie: These recycled World Cup 26 uniforms are not designed for women. Well, maybe girl with small boobs.
Coach: Don't worry, uniforms or no uniforms we are doing well.
Debbie: Our attack isn't working well enough. We should try the other strikers or get the midfielders to move up more.
Coach: Well, I don't know why that stupid Trishan is on this team. As for moving up the midfield, the defense isn't the best so no.
Debbie: What about Nien, make her a striker. I have no idea why she's in defense at all.
Coach: She's always been a defender. She's not much good with close strikes.
Debbie: And Betty. I think she's pregnant but she's not letting that on.
Coach: Hard to tell with her, boobs and all.
Debbie: I know, two kids and maybe more. We playing Penny next game?
Coach: Err, no. Sore wrist... at least can't handball anything for next few games.

It looked bright after a demolition of Kelse, but the ladies from Jeruselem soon put the Kittens back in their place.

The game against Kelse looked average enough going into half time, with a header by Giesen and a miracle of a goal by Ritta were cancelled out by the two let in by Ullman.

However a 12 minute period in the second half saw Gettemy pick up a hattrick and the Kittens pick up victory.

The match against Jeruselem brought thje girls back down to earth A silly mistake cost them the game. Although the kittens defence held the superior Jeruselem side in check they couldn't prevent the goal.

Second place in the group, is the second round calling?

Stars use break to tweak

After winning their first two matches in the inaugural Women's World Cup, you'd think the Sarzonian national women's football team would be estatic about their standing as the best team in Group E. You'd also think that Coach Brenda Campbell wouldn't have much to tell the team as they play their next two matches against Milchama and Casari.

You'd be wrong.

Campbell said she's "not pleased" with her team's defence in the first two matches, as the back four in front of goalkeeper Lisa Bridger let her down "more times than I'd care to count," and only Bridger "essentially standing on her head" prevented the Stars from starting the first World Cup with a 0-0-2 record.

"We have to tighten up defensively," Campbell said. "We've got two tough sides judging by their early results and we have to mark better one v. one and we have to mind our responsibilities. That's not getting done enough for my liking." Campbell also expressed concerns that the team's goals have all come from midfielders Jenna Raven and Landra Tennison, the only Stars players with experience in international football.

"They've been our rocks, but what happens if they're injured? What about what happens if teams mark them more tightly? If we can't get production from other players, we're going to be in trouble when the group stage ends. We have to get going," she said.

Despite Campbell's comment, the Stars say they aren't looking any farther ahead than their next match.

"We still haven't clinched a spot in the next round yet, so there's nothing to say about the knockout stage until that happens," forward Vonnie Butler said. "Right now, our next task is our next match. Period. We don't want to lose our focus from game to game." Even though Butler earned her first two caps, she admitted she has learned from Raven's experience with both the now-defunct Under 21 men's national team and the men's senior nationals.

"She's been there before. She's played in a World Cup final. She knows what it takes to win at the highest level," Butler said. "How can you not be influenced by that?"

Stars clinch the group, win 2-0

CASTILLE, Chicanada, April 17 (ASP) -- With an extra matchday to prepare for their match against Casari, the Sarzonian women's national team spent their bye tightening a defence that conceded an average of 1.5 goals per match while Sarzonia's offence scored a total of five goals in the two matches. Without saying it for the record, some of the players privately said they wanted revenge for midfielder Jenna Raven after the men's team lost to Casari in a match that officially put them out of the running for the World Cup knockouts.

The efforts to tighten their defence seemed to work like a charm. The Stars officially clinched the Group E title with a convincing 2-0 win over Casari that saw the team get goals from Vonnie Butler and Wilma Diaz en route and play stifling defence in front of goalkeeper Lisa Bridger.

"We had to tighten things up and get goals from other players on our team," Coach Brenda Campbell said. "For one game, we were able to do that. We've got to be able to maintain that, especially with Milchama coming in." Campbell said she would give her depth players an opportunity to start or see significant minutes in the final match with the group title already assured.

"We need to make sure that our depth players get a chance to play; some of them have not had a fair chance to show what they can do," she said. "We also want to make sure we don't run our most important players into the ground."

Sarzonia's final match may not have the playoff implications of other matches, except for the fact they can officially send last place Milchama home and they can help Casari with a victory, but the Stars say they expect playoff intensity for their final match regardless of the stakes.

"C'mon, it's Milchama, home of the really long newspaper names," Raven said. "We've waited for an opportunity outside of baseball for a chance at those guys."

Well at least the ladies of Qazox and Becquerelia can get along better than the National teams. In a very evenly matched game, Qazox came up a bit short of qualifing for the round of 16, now they need help (see below). Becquerelia started that match slowly working thier way down the pitch and Qazox, playing its 4th game in 4 days was slow to react and 11 minutes in, Becquerelian forward Zofia Goldburg scored to make it 1-0. Qazox pressed forward and got the equalizer as Genny Gump scored in the 20th minute to tie the match at 1-all. The fatigue factoer set in as Zofia Goldburg scored once again this time just before halftime in the 43rd minute to give Becquerelia the lead they would not relinquish. Overall a 2-0-2 record in group play is promising, but the timing of the matches was not good, hopefully a couple of days off before the Round of 16, if we qualify will do a world of wonders for this young team.

In other Action today, Krytenia ran-through Virgina Nova 5-1 while New Montreal States had the bye.

Here are the playoff possiblities for all the teams, thanks to our wonderful hosts Chicanada:

Becquerelia can win the group with a win OR a loss or tie with a NMS loss or tie.

Qazox advances with a Krytenia/Virgina Nova loss or tie or if Krytenia wins by only a 1-0 score (ooc: I'm guessing H2H is a tiebreaker right?) and cannot win group.

NMS advances with a win or tie against Nova, wins the group with a Nova win by at least two goals and a BEC loss.

Krytenia advances with a win or tie with Becquerelia and a NMS loss.

Nova advances with a win over NMS and a Krytenia loss.

Psychos Squeak By

Seemingly adamant to emulate the senior team's performance, the female Psychos chose to take their qualifying campaign right down to the wire. An opening day 2-1 defeat against Iksonic, Rebecca Quinn scoring the only goal, kept Psycho nerves jangling, and the 1-0 victory over San Haven didn't look convincing enough to help matters

True, they were second after the match, but there was nothing separating them from Iksonic in third - both teams had lost once and won once, both had scored twice and conceded two goals, but since Iksonic still had to play San Haven, they looked the more promising shots to qualify.

But thankfully for the Psychos, San Haven were at least up to the task, holding Iksonic to a 1-1 draw, meaning that as long as McPsychoville won, or drew and scored two or more goals, they were through. For the longest time, however, that looked unlikely - Yafor 2 kept up their good run of form, scoring three in quick succession; the third goal came just after the half-hour mark. The Psychos had a mountain to climb, yes, but the ladies proved themselves up to the task, upping their game an exceptional amount.

Even after they had clawed two goals back - Quinn and Lisa Varon doing the honours, Quinn upping her total to three in the tournament so far - there was the overriding feeling that they weren't going to be good enough to overcome a three-goal deficit, and like most teams would, Yafor 2 dug in after the second McPsychoville goal. It took one piece of sublime skill from Natalie Guenard to open up the defence successfully - a dummy run from Varon drew enough of the Vafor defence's attention to allow Guernard the space she needed for the stunning scissors kick, right on the final whistle.

It was a well-deserved reprieve for the Psychos, who simply never stopped fighting, but it looks very much like their just-starting good run will come crashing to a halt; thanks to the opening day defeat, the Psychos finish second in the group, and now have to face Sarzonia in the next round - the same Sarzonia who have so far swept their group and look to continue in their final game against Milchama.

Still, at least we got through. That's got to count for something, right?

We just won a match finally. We won against kelse. It was a 1-2 win thuogh, ant thats not much. However the good thing is we won.

Yes, but we almost lost. Kelse was both fighting our defense and defening themselves well. After our first goal slipped through their defense, they had attempted 2 goals. the first wass succesful, and the second one almost was, but thankfully we stopped it. And just 10 minutes before the end of the game, it looked like it was going to be a draw. However we managed to get a last minute goal.

It looks like we will need to win our next match in order to stay in the cup. Is it possible?
I hope so.

Stars outfight Warriors, 2-1

CASTILLE, Chicanada, 18 April (ASP) -- Before the inaugural Women's World Cup began, Brenda Campbell faced a great deal of scrutiny from people who thought she was crazy to give up a cushy job as a Federal Commerce and Trade Committee Member for a gig as the Sarzonian women's national team coach at half her previous salary. However, she now has four good reasons why her choice was the right one.

The Stars completed their run through the World Cup group stage with a 2-1 win over Milchama that was hard-fought. Literally. The teams combined for a Women's World Cup record 44 fouls, including 19 on Sarzonia, with midfielder Landra Tennison drawing two yellows in the 42nd minute, one for shoving a Milchaman player and a second for dissent when she argued the call, leaving the Stars a player down for the rest of the match.

It didn't matter. Forward Vonnie Butler had already scored two goals and the defence played sterling football in front of goalkeeper Karra Perkins. After the match, Campbell said she regretted not playing her second 11 as she considered before the last, meaningless match against Milchama.

"There wasn't much in the way of playoff implications and I wanted to keep the players ready to go for the next matchups," Campbell said. "Now I can't play Landra because she didn't keep her cool. I'm going to talk with her about doing that during training day." The Stars will use training day to prepare for McPsychoville, who finished in second place in Group B.

"We just know they had a tough group," Campbell said. "Besides that, we're going to find out a lot more about them once we've gone through their match tapes. Trust me, we'll be ready by kickoff."

The qualifing groups are finally done and the Lady oxen squeaked themselves into the round of 16. The important matches of the day were Virgina Nova vs. New Montreal States which NMS won by the final score of 1-0. The girls then waited with baited breath as the score came in from Krytenia - Becquerelia match. An early goal by Krytenia made the team wince, but when Becquerelia tied the match up, the Lady Oxen jumped and cheered. When the final whistle blew, the match ended in a 1-1 draw, sending Qazox to the Knock-out round.

It seems that womens football may very well be the future, as the team hopes to make an impact in the latter stages of the world cup.

Second place in the group was secured by an utter destruction of Fmjphoenix. Ullman was barely troubled and another Gettemy hattrick has her on 7 goals after just 4 games. With the other being knocked in by her partner striker just after half-time the Kittens scoring stands at:

Gettemy 7
Giesen 2
Ritta 1

Goals which have propelled the Kittens into the position of being the highest scoring nation at this point.

Pundits from both home and abroad are expecting the Kittens to push past Hakari and the belief must now be strong in the Kittens dressing room that they really stand a chance here.

Looks like swilatia lost the match. I don't think Swilatia is in the cup anymore. At least we tried to stay in the cup, but we failed. It looks we will never make it very far.

Actually, we are still in the cup, and we have a very god chance of winning.
However we do not know what will happen to our ladies in the second stage of this cup. It alll depends who we will be with with, and we have no idea who that would be. None at all.

Uh, ya. Lets get to the match.

Yes, I forgot we had to tell how the match went this time. Both teams were playing with an offensive style, and youd think that would mean scores like 8-9. However its not that way at all. The end scores were 0-1.

All goal attempts were pretty much the same. They sliped passed the defense, but then the goalkeeper saved it.

Well, it was that way until near the end, when Jersulem attempted another goal. It went the same way, except that Sally O'Hare knocked in the rebound.

But the question remains, how are we still here even though we lost?

Because the team below us lost as well and they lost at a greater scale. as we lost 0-1, and they lost 0-4.

Well, okay. But we should not worry about the previous stage. We are moving on to the next.

Angels fly, Viking girls drown

Group C of the first women's world Cup, the one with Jeruselem and Fmjphoenix in it. U21C22, Jeruselem lost two games and drew one, did not progress to the 2nd round. The girls did not fail us - they recorded 4 wins out of 4 notably all were 1-0 wins but who cares - we won. The form is good but the attack needs more teeth as one goal is not going save the day in the final if we get there.

Fmjphoenix are out! The Viking girls did not make the next round as Apologetic Kittens smashed them 4-0 to allow defeated Swilatia to sneak into 3rd. God is funny, we fail in U21C22 but the Jeruselem girls are just doing fine even if they are wearing recycled World Cup 27 uniforms.

A review of the teams
Jeruselem - Four 1-0 wins. Attack not too flash but defense was the key - very Karelan! Not System Takil, but it works all the same.
Apologetic Kittens - 2 wins and just one loss. They deserve to make the next round as they only lost to us.
Swilatia - These guys in place of the Viking girls? Two losses but the one win and better goal difference due to the Kittens winning. Lucky, but luck helps.
Kelse - They tried and failed.

Well, guess who we play in Round of 16. Starblaydia ... oh yes, the Stars girls aren't here to play around, like us they are here to win. If we win this, anything can happen. We could be playing Apologetic Kittens in the final!

Stars sneak past Psychoes

EASTENTOWN, Chicanadan 20 April 2006 (ASP) -- Sarzonia's women's national football team cruised through the four match group stage of the inaugural Women's World Cup as Group E champions, setting themselves up for a match they were expected to win easily against Group B second place McPsychoville. However, the Stars needed the heroics of their two veterans and forward Vonnie Butler in penalties to advance to the quarterfinals.

The Stars (5-0-0 overall) traded goals in the first half with midfielder Jenna Raven scoring for the Stars at the 19 minute mark. However, McPsychoville answered back six minutes later and the teams traded scoring opportunities the rest of the match. However, both goalkeepers were on top of their game and Sarzonia's Lisa Bridger made six saves in the final 65 minutes of the match.

"That match was definitely not good for the heart," Coach Brenda Campbell said. "We showed a lot of character keeping our heads up after a goal that could have easily deflated us. I give our girls a lot of credit."

After Sarzonia's first two shooters in the penalties session missed high and McPsychoville's first two scored, the Stars were fighting for their lives and began their drive to survive with the boot of Landra Tennison. The veteran midfielder slammed home a shot down the middle as the Psychoes goalkeeper guessed left, bringing the Stars back into the round at 2-1.

"I just wanted to power the ball in there," Tennison said. "Nothing fancy, just hit it well. I usually hit it to my right, so that may have gotten [the goalkeeper]." Raven was next for the Stars after a McPsychoville miss and she shot high into the upper right corner past the 'keeper's leaping attempt.

A McPsychoville shot off the crossbar gave Sarzonia a chance to win the match on the right boot of Butler. She deked the keeper to her right and slipped the ball into the left corner of the net and Bridger stoned the Psychoes shooter.

The Stars face Jeruselem in the quarterfinals.
Qazox

Lake Porter City Sun

Disapointing. The only word that comes to mind about Qazox's run in the First Women's World Cup. They won their 1st two matches, rather easily, but finished with two losses in group play and had to wait to see if they even qualified for the Round of 16. They did, but drew the Hosts and the Hosts won 4-3 earlier today.

With the crowd overwhelmingly in favor of Chicanada, Qazox had a tough row to hoe from the vey beginning. The hosts scored first in the 23rd minute of action, as their forward #2 (name unavailble) blasted a hard 15yd shot right past Alice Springs. The sellout crowd of over 50,000 in Astur City Stadia, Cana sounded like 500,000 after the goal. Only 6 minutes later in the 29th minute, the hosts scored once again to take a 2-nil lead. With the crowd cheering so loud, the Lady Oxen seemed confused and allowed the third Chicanada goal at the 40 minute mark The half time whistle couldn't blow fast enough as it ended 3-nil in favor of the hosts.

Head coach Lili Sterns at halftime substituted herself into goal, as 19-yr old Alice Springs seemed lost on the field. Also substituted in were the Childress Twins, replacing thier younger sisters at midfield. The changes seemed to inspire the Lady oxen as in the 53rd minute, Danica Childress scored to cut the lead to 3-1. The crowd quieted down a bit after that first goal by Qazox, and the Lady Oxen took full advantage of the quiter crowd scoring another goal this time in the 62nd minute as Kylie Rena scored on a penalty kick given after an inadvertent handball by a Chicanada Defender. With the score now 3-2 and momentum on thier side, the Lady Oxen began to press Chicanada even more and in the 77th minute, Danica Childress scored her second goal of the match to tie it at 3-all. Within a span of 30 minutes, the crowd at Astur City Stadia went from insanely loud to church quiet. The two squads traded possessions for most of the last 10 minutes of the match, but a costly yellow card by Olivia Garden, set-up the winning goal as Chicanada scored off a set-play on the ensuing freekick. Wth only 2 minutes left in the match, Coach Sterns, pulled herself from goal to set up an 8 woman attack, with only seconds before the final whistle, a blast by Kelli Renoir hit the crossbar, ending the hard fough match 4-3 in favor of the Hosts.

Overall this was not a great cup for the Lady Oxen. They lost thier last three matches and could have and should have won 2 of those three. Hopefully in four years, Qazox will learn from its mistakes in this cup and do better.
Apologetic Kittens
21-04-2006, 11:14
The Kittens claimed a late victory to book their place in the quarter finals and a match with an Anastasiania team which brushed aside the New Montreal States.

In their round of 16 game an early goal had given Haraki an advantage which they clung desperately to throughout the first half. Neither keeper really being challenged.

The second half saw a different momentum, however, as the Kittens pressed for an equaliser. It soon came as a high pass by Ward was rewarded with Gettemy's 8th goal of the tournament. And that's the way the score remained, with both teams searching for that vital winning goal.

A goal which came just 3 minutes from time as a Stanfield cross was headed in by Giesen, showing why the Kittens don't rely entirely on Gettemy for their goals.

Anastasiania may be a stumbling block for the Kittens, but many are still expecting them to make the semis.

Okay. So we are on a roll in this cup. We made it past the group stage, and past the round of sixteen. However we do not know how the quarterfinal with Chicanada will go. We hope to be champions in this cup.

Well, our 1-0 victory was only because we could not have draws anymore now that we are in the elimination stage.

Yes, no with the match please, ok.

Nothing happened during the match. if draws were allowed then the scores would be 0-0. Thats right, no goals were scored during the match. None at all. Absolutely none.

Well, one thing I must say is that I can't believe that we are getting so close to the finals. We don't know what our chances with chicanada will be. But if we win, then we will make it to the semi-finals, which would guarantee us that we will be in either the finals or the third place match.

Tristan Tik stood to take Jeruselem's 5th penalty shot. All the other girls had done well, but she was not much a penalty taker - in fact one of the worst. The Starblaydia keeper Paola Mendez looked good and keen for the action. Tik sweated and prayed she didn't mess this one up by falling over. She lined up the kick and struck it under the flying keeper. "Yes, yes, yes ... I got penalty shot" she shouted and hugged her teammates.

Gaynor Rouble paced around ignoring the others and calmly assessed her the goal again. She looked at Dasha Tolkacheva, who wasn't exactly the worst player on the Starblaydia team. She stood in her spot and watched her opponent for tell tale signs of where she was going to shoot. Gaynor was big girl and much feared in a shoot out. Dasha Tolkacheva fired her shot to the left corner and Gaynor guessed right using her right hand to deflect it over the left corner.

The Jeruselem girls went wild and rushed over to her. Jeruselem rarely won shoot outs in any competition and the girls had a 100% record. The captain Debbie Dallas went up to Dasha and said "It's not your fault. God knows how many times this has happened to me. We all learn from these things."

Olga was doing handstands for the Jeruselem fans in the meantime where the signs "Debbie does everything right" was popular. A few "Debbie does Starblaydia" signs had popped up.

<after the game>

Lisa the coach was talking to her team "Great game girls. Those Starblaydia girls really tested us but we still have more improvement. More goals girls, more goals. And Trishan, see you could do it. All you have to do is not fall over. Our next opponent is Sarzonia who also won their game on penalties, so it's going to be tough in the quarter final. That's all. Clean up and let's get some rest now."

Vonnie does Jeruselem

Eastentown, Chicanada 22 April 2006 (ASP) -- The Sarzonian men's national team had a long history of falling short at the hands of Jeruselem, finally beating their former nemesis only when they had a team capable of winning the world championship, and in fact, defending a World Cup title in World Cup XXIII finals play.

This Stars team won't have that same problem, not after forward Vonnie Butler's 29th minute tally put Sarzonia ahead to stay and goalkeeper Lisa Bridger repeatedly stoned Jeruselem attackers en route to a 1-0 quarterfinals win that leaves Anastasiania in the way of the Stars and a possible berth in the Women's World Cup finals championship match.

"I tell you what, Vonnie's really found her form as this tournament has worn on," Coach Brenda Campbell said. "She's done a remarkable job since the early going of taking initiative and playing her game of football. She's making it very hard for other teams to key in on [midfielder] Jenna Raven and she's going to be key for us if we have any aspirations of playing on past this stage."

The Stars (6-0-0) have yet to taste anything other than victory in large part because they have learned to play together as a team following a "lightning quick" training camp, but Campbell said the team would gather immediately after the Sarzonian Football League season ends to have more of a chance to prepare for the tournament.

"We're going to go in with the weight of expectations no matter what happens from here on out," Campbell said. "Even if we lose to Anastasiania, we're still going to be one of the final four from this World Cup and that's going to play a role in the way teams approach matches against us. We'll need to play much better football the next time out than we have so far. We won't get a chance to slip up against anyone."

It's easy to take the long view for someone like Campbell, whom sources close to Incorporated Football Federation chairman Dave Wilson have said will be rewarded with a new long-term contract that would earn her the same money she turned down to take on the coaching reins with the women's national team. But Raven and other Stars players realise their work in this World Cup isn't done yet.

"We still have two games to go before we can say our work is done, provided, of course, we win our next match," she said. "We need to remember that we've still got to put our best effort out there for ninety minutes-plus."

Stars sneak into final on penalties

Jaxx, Chicanada (ASP), 25 APRIL 2006 -- One hundred twenty minutes of football progressed and neither Sarzonia's national women's football team nor Anastasiania's side could pierce the other's defence or goalkeepers after a combination of mistakes and brilliant play kept both teams off the scoreboard.

However, when the match reached penalty kicks, the Stars' superiority began to tell, as all four Sarzonian shooters converted, whilst only one Anastasiania player beat goalkeeper Lisa Bridger. After midfielder Jenna Raven banged home Sarzonia's fourth goal, she and the rest of the team began a low-key celebration, but Sarzonia advanced to the final after a victory by the margin of 0:0 (Sarzonia advancing on penalties 4-1).

"Our girls showed a lot of spirit out there," Coach Brenda Campbell said. "We knew we weren't going to give up without a fight and we played well in spots. We're looking forward to playing a great Liverpool England side and we're proud to be one of the first two teams to play for a World Cup championship in women's football."

Sarzonia (7-0-0) are playing what many of the Stars are referring to as a rematch with Liverpool England of the men's World Cup XXIV finals, which Liverpool England won 2-1 after extra time. While Raven and fellow men's team veteran Landra Tennison are primed for revenge, the rest of the team is more concerned with winning a title.

"We're not the same team that lost to Liverpool England in World Cup XXIV," said forward Vonnie Butler. "They're not the same team that beat Sarzonia in that final. This is a completely different set of circumstances. If we need anything more than winning the first-ever women's World Cup as motivation, we've got mega problems."

After the team got a night's rest in Jaxx, Campbell moved the team to Southampton so they could familiarise themselves with their surroundings. Campbell said she wanted her team to have every possible edge in a match she said would be "closely fought.

"We don't want to throw away our chances of winning, and I think we'd do better if we went straight to Southampton after we got a good night's sleep at the hotel here." She said being able to play several of the team's early matches in one location was "a huge help," saying that the minimal travel allowed her players to remain rested.

"It makes a difference when you're not on a bus or a train schlepping all over the country to one venue and another," she said. "That's the kind of logistics I like."
