Alright, I'm imagining a near-future tech zombie Apocalypse story. If you like the idea, post a character, meanwhile I'll post the opening.
OK, essentially here's the story. The H-VAS Virus emerges from South East Asia, and quickly becomes the number one killer, above heart disease and cancers etc. Two molecular biologists figure out the genetic makeup of the disease, and then several countries decided to weaponize it. Terrorists from Iran steal some of the incredibly deadly (M)H-VAS, and release it in Israel. After that, everything goes to hell in a handbasket. Almost everyone "dies". Then, the Virus begins to mutate and starts to become a controlling parasite that turns people into blood hungry mindless zombies.
Thus, all the characters are survivors of both the epidemic, and the firt appearance of the zombies. All survivors are now embroiled in a fight for the very survival of the human race.
So, all characters should essentially be regular people, who have been hardened considerably by the circumstances.

Background: Just a regular guy until the Mortis Strain hit. The disease claimed his family as it did most others. When the dead started walking again, he moved himself into a small bomb shelter that had come with his Cold War Era house.
Equipment: Hunting Rifle and a box of ammunition, as well as a knife and a zippo. At his shelter, he has a truck, enough rations for several months, and a shortwave radio.
