SERE (Interest/Sign-up thread)

Gaeltach

As the title suggests, this is a sign-up and interest thread for an RP I'm looking to start. I'll have 4 or 5 open positions. Possibly more if someone proposes a character I really like the sound of. Acceptance will be first come, first serve. :)

Context: This will take place in the context of a cadet training camp for the Gaeltach military. It is an international program, involved heavily in cadet and officer exchange with the intent of creating more culturally aware military members. So there's your basics.

During the last phase of the training, senior cadets are broken into small teams and sent through a program called FTX, or Field Training Exercise. Details of the exercise are kept secret, though rumors of a SERE-like program are widely speculated. All the cadets know is that it will test their skills both in basic survival, and their ability to work as a team. SERE, by the way stands for Survival, Evasion, Resistance, Escape.

Once I have enough people to play the team members, I will select one of you to take on the role of team leader. This does not mean other people can challenge the role once they're out in the field... You may wonder what I will be doing if I'm not on the team or its leader. Well, I'll play their Instructor for one. The rest, you'll just have to wait and see. Nothing is what it seems.

So there you have it. If you're interested, just leave a short character description. You don't really need to come up with a bio or anything like that (unless you really want to), I'm just looking for the basics. I would like to see some sort of speciality, however. Exampes include navigation, tracking, etc. I don't care if it's all that original, just looking for a diverse team.

Excellent. For the purposes of the training, we'll have to treat him like a regular cadet, but the prior experience will end up being useful, I believe. I trust that's alright by you?

I would like to join this RP, however, I am not familiar with the armaments, etc. (like Hurtful Thoughts), so I don't know if I am qualified to join this RP. I don't know the equipment, etc.

Would that make me a poor choice for this RP?

After seeing Hurtful Thoughts' post, I think my char. would come across as a moron. I have no background in this, although I am interested...

What do you think, Gael? Too naive militarily? I can't name off types of rifles and grenades and ammo, nor planes for that matter...

Almost the same limitations for me as for Hyper-can't-spell-that-name.
Though I would really like to re-animate a char similar to those I used as Northern Germany.

But inventing a char is fun, so I'll just do it:

Name: Unteroffz.(Sergeant) Alexander Kosinsky
Gender: Male
Age: 24
Eyes: Light blue (like Peter O'Tool)
Hair: Black
Height: 6'1''
Build:slender but muscular
Top Skills: Interrogation, Scouting, Camouflage
Worst Skills: Hand-to-Hand, everything that requires more technical knowledge than "don't put your finger into the socket"

Hype and Earth II (long time no see, btw, how's everything?)

You guys will be fine with no knowledge of weapons, armaments and all that. HT is using a char with prior military experience, so its natural for that char to know all that stuff. However the training camp is sort of like a Basic Training course, so you're not necessarily expected to know everything yet.

And like I said, I'm looking for diversity, so characters with very little military experience are not a detriment to the RP.

Hyper, just try and you'll do fine, in the meantime, if you have any knowledge ofthethe following, jot it down. under- skills.

vehicle and heavy weapons training will be almost useless, since you'll have to hike most of the way.

Navigation and Stealth are keys to escape/evasion. (don't want to double back into enemy base)

Infiltration and Marksmanship usefull if in a skirmish

Medical skills, Lingusts and interogators are usefull after a raid

6 Frag grenades
Combat knife

IEA standard combat dress or chilli suit
Cevlar vest

Shovel
Polymer water canteen and mess kit
Compass
Videocamera
face paint (greene, black brown)

Small medi kit
Four days rations (taste: ugly)
Fishing line and hooks

Small pocket lamp
A small packet with drugs for interogations (nobody should know this :D )

Worst Skills: Heavy armory (tanks, etc.)

I can't seem to find equipment... So this is what I have in less than layman's terms:

Sniper rifle, lots of armor piercing sniper ammo, grenades, stun bombs (or whatever those are called), several pistols capable of sniping, knives, parachute if necessary, maps, Kevlar vest, tablets for purifying water plus a canteen, compass, Mylar space blanket... RHIP stands for Rank Hath Its Privilages.
[NS]Isam
28-03-2006, 00:29
If there are no objections...

Name: Simon Jheryn
Age: 26
Height: 5'11"
Build: Slim, muscular

Nationality & Home: Imperial Faith Union (Isam Nation, Tol Judaine: Parish Leviticus)
Religion: Imperial Faith (Baptised: Tol Judaine: Parish Ezekiel)
Organisation: Army of the Faith, Section Six (6th Army of Isam)
Rank: Convict, Corporal. Absolved. (Former criminal, accepted Conscription into the Seventh Army instead of facing prison sentence, completed time and chose to remain with the Armies of Isam).

Specialist skills: Infiltration, close-quarter (hand-to-hand, pistols), security systems, navigation
Significant weaknesses:
- Inherantly lazy despite indoctrination by Isamite army. While in service is diligent, trustworthy and an exemplary soldier, but when not being watched tends to revert to old ways.
- As with many Isamites he can be blind about religious matters, preferring to stick to a narrow view rather than consider other religions as legitimate.
- Insecure and uncomfortable without the trappings of religion, which dominate every aspect of life in Isam, including military. He tends to pray a lot - not really a weakness, but unlikely to endear him to those trying to focus on something.

Background:

Convicted aged sixteen of theft, grevious assault and attempted murder, Jheryn was offered the standard choice granted to those in his situation - a long prison sentence, or enlistment into the Seventh Army (at the Judge's discretion). Convict-Private Jheryn served seven of a ten-year sentence in the Seventh Army, managing to escape death while gaining distinctions in what is easily the least safe of the Seven Armies - mostly as it is largely considered expendable by the Hierarchy.

Upon being granted release due to exemplary behaviour, Jheryn opted to remain in the Armies of Isam rather than try and civillian work - despite knowing that any record of his crime would be expunged records accessible by companies (once a crime is paid for, it is as if it never occurred, unless the convict commits another crime, when it will count against them). He was brought into the Sixth Army to service in putting down the occassional rebellion.

[[More to follow, along with equipment etc. tomorrow. Let me know if it is acceptable/whether you want him]]

One knife for the entire group.

If you want other stuff, I need to know what. Afterall this is supposed to be survival training... meaning you learn to survive WITHOUT tools or weapons. In the real SERE school, I don't think you even get a knife, so I was being a bit generous there. You get either a sleeping bag or a field jacket, and that is pretty much it. Period. No ruck even, if I recall correctly.

If I recall corect (I might be wrong)

SERE trainees for US army Rangers get 2 matches, a knife, and BDU each (per person), no map, compass, or such. Something about a dead rabit too.

Russian winter survival training involved a greatcoat, a knife and a calm head. But no matches. It also lacked 'enemy' troops to worry about.

Myth:
Tree Moss grows on the north side of trees.

False:
Moss will grow anywhere there is shade, doesn't matter what side of a tree it is on.

Therefore, Atticus is lost. This is a woodsman's myth, normall only used by hunters in desperation, and it generally gets them into yet more trouble. Try it sometime. Moss doesn't grow on the NORTH side of the tree, it grows and the DARK (and wet) SIDE of the tree. (hehe, star wars parady)

 Some mistake! I'd love to hear how that one came about.

re: Moss - Yes, but the dark side is usually north unless you're in some sort of abnormal setting.. or below the equator, I suppose. It grows all over the tree, but should be thickest on the north side.

It's not really a facility. It's just a remote location in the Highlands. No civilization in this area, as it's designated as government land and used exclusively for this and other appropriate training conditions. Your destination is far, over hilly/mountainesque terrain.. for the sake of argument, let's say 25 miles.

@Hurtful Thoughts

IIRC nobody ever said anything about staying at the river for a long time. In my opinion we only had a short rest to drink something and to orientate. Gorby dissapeared before anything else happened and didn't tell anyone. A list with suggestions isn't the same as telling the teamleader (or anyone else) that Gorby leaves the group. Thus we have to consider him lost.

OK, maybe for a different RP. If I had any talent, or any knowledge whatsoever about the armed forces (Other than what I've learned from docu.s and from G. Gordon Liddy... :D ), and could ever start an RP, well, maybe in another decade...

Umm... I'm still overtired, illin', etc., so I'm goofy as it gets right now... :fluffle:

As it is we should have been captured a while ago for playing around by the river for a damn fortnight.

Vandy only came down with a fever because at the time I had one as well. So it would explain any mistakes or poor grammer. :)

Mushrooms you say?

<-- Game

I'm more concerned about moving out again though.

Luporum, I hear ya about being sick. I've been exhausted w/migraines and whatever the barbed wire salad did to my stomach. I can't do a lot online as I get tired fast...

Sheesh... if my char. felt like me, he'd be dragging a casket! :p :D

Most of your characters are bitching because there's no cohesion or leadership even though I gave the order to move across the river several posts ago. None of you followed.

I'm not sure what you guys think what happens in a squad but whatever the squad leader says goes, even if he's incompotent. Nothing is done without his request; so if I seem a little frustrated it's because all of you seem to do whatever the hell you want.

I'm done being squadleader, choose someone else. Hell have Hurtful do it since he's such an expert. btw it would be wise to keep ooc insults to a minimum especially with the mood I'm in.

Alright, alright, everyone chill. Take a deep breath and step back for a minute.

First, it is the role of team leader to motivate and bind everyone.

That said, it is the role of the team members to get over themselves and their own egos, and to attempt to work together.

I find it intersting that the same challenges to teamwork IRL occur here as well. When I went through my training, we all had to step back and realize that success depended on pulling together. Your characters must realize that, even if you as an individual do not yet. They always told us (now granted, we were being racked and stacked individually on leadership) that the role of the team was to make the leader look good. Help them out. Give them pointers, but realize they're in charge.

Hmm, I've been using the World book encyclopedia, and the now dicontinued BSA Signals book.

. _ . . .
is the abbreviation of 'wait'

AS looks more like
. _ / . . .

(forums do not allow the necessary 3 spaces of silence between letters, there is also a 7 space of silence between words, a 'space' is equal to the time it takes for a dot to be transmitted, there is one space of silence between parts of a letter)

Better site, more comprehensive, closer to the code system I was using.

A bit of satire:

[everybody looks at person next to themselves]

collective thought:
"When is he* going to post"

*same as military manuals, he is used because it it much shorter to use he instead of he/she and more polite than "it". The manuals ironicly, also have a lengthy explanation at the end explaining this reasoning. And makes one wonder how much ink useing the word "he" actually saves.

At the very least it proves lawyers have a sense of humur too. Albeit a warped one at the expense of taxpayers. So you might as well get your laughs out of it, because technically you already paid for the entertainment.

Is this thread intentionally dying or is it merely dissused?

We made it past the mountains and forests, 'Gorby' is back with the main group (and has very little idea of the local chain of command).

If possable, I would expect Vanderline to give a passionate speech of how stupid Gorby was running off like he did.

I would also like to ask if there is a way around the open field.
