Antartica opened to colonization

Due to the collapse of the entire antartic ice sheet, Antarctica has become habitable with the exception of that part located directly beneath the ozone hole the government of Whittier, for the sake of preserving the new Antartic fuana that will be developing, and to protect the lives and interests of Whittierites in Antartica, Whittier announces claims to a portion of Antartic territory formerly claimed by the US, New Zealand, Australia, Britain, Australia, Chili, Russia, and France.
As we have no desire to keep the whole continent for ourselves, we call for a conference of those nations interested in establishing colonies in Antartica in wake the deadly aftermath of global warming.
Already, our scientists have spotted new life forms that appear to be spontaneous adaptations to the new conditions in Antartica.
Professor Busybee, one of the world's top biologists and an conservationist activist was qouted as saying the new forms of life are proof that no matter what we human do, life will always find a way to adapt and survive.

OOC: In this rp, the Antartic and Greenland ice sheets are gone. They melted away in just 5 years cause of global warming. All of Southern Florida is underwate. The islands of the South Pacific and many carribean islands are no more. For they too became submerged due to the rise in global water levels.
California is a hot dry desert. And the northern tundra has been replaced with shrubs and fuana that moved in from lower altitudes.
Many governments of collapsed and been replaced by new ones due to the effects of global warming and drinking water has become so valuable that wars are now fight over it.

"So you mean Biscoe Base is now a subtropical paradise?"

"Not quite that far, Foreign Minister, but it has a desirable outlook over the Larsen Ice Shelf, or rather Larsen Sea."

"It is a good job we put in that provisional claim, then...technically we have obtained a chunk of land?"

"Yes, the entire eastern side of the Graham Land peninsula and Palmer Land, plus land around Vinson Massif where we had Borchgrevink Base. I propose we put in a claim to join them together. Vinson Massif could be a tourist area, there are still snows around its peak."

"How about Berkner Island? How is Garrard Base?"

"Doing fine, just about. Thankfully it was on stilts above the polar ice. It's just about on the sea."

"Oh well. Draw up the appropriate papers, then."

OOC: West Antartica would actually be more like a bunch of little islands. Those islands being the tops of mountains while the valleys have been carved so deeply over the years by the Antartic glaciers, that they are now below sea level. So I just give Wentland almost the whole of west antartica. Including the peninsula which is the only part of west antartica that is actually a contiguous strip of land.

IC: As Wentland is the only nation to express interest in claiming a share of Antartica, the Whittier government has drawn up the following map, with the understanding the remainder of Antartica, while not part of the UPR per se, will now become a trust administered by the government of the UPR.
It is the incumbent responsibility of the Whittier government to administer the Antartic Trust in such a way as to protect the environment and the new species that are arising there. For this purpose, hunting in the Antartic Trust shall be severely restricted. Likewise, mining operations in the Antartic Trust shall also be restricted.

To enforce this document, Whittier shall use all means necessary to ensure that the Chilean government surrenders its claims to the Antartic Peninsula, to the government of Wentland. Diplomacy is to be used first. If diplomacy fails, then forced occupation of the peninsula is by either Whittier or Wentland is authorized.

I suppose I and my region (www.nationstates.net/target=display_region/region=antarctic_oasis) ought not be worried by these recent developments; it's Antartica that's been opened to colonization; not Antarctica. :p

Oops. Misspelling on my part.
Either way its not your region. I think there are like thousands of antarcticas around these forums.
This one, is a post climate change antarctica. Where the islands of the pacific all sink into oblivion, southern florida gets submerged and stuff. It's based off the stuff I've been reading about global warming.
The storms where this antarctica is, are pretty powerful due to the effects of manmade global warming. And California is a hot ass desert like Kuwait, the arctic tundra has thawed and replaced with trees and shrubs and fauna from lower altitudes, the polar bears are extinct.

¤>-INTERNATIONAL ANNOUNCMENT FROM THE ZOMBIE VATICAN-<¤

The Zombie Alliance has been living in Antartica for thousands of years, namely on the penninsula directly south of South America. A little water will not drive us to leave our Heartland, nor will any amount of stupid tourists! As of this moment, the ruling Death Cult of ZA is issuing heavy military patrols around what is left of the Zombie Heartland, and banning all forms of immigration not aknowledged by the state of the Zombie Alliance. Wentlanders will not be allowed to land on our rightful penninsula; if any that are already there do not leave withing forty-eight hours, we are not afraid to use aggresive force.

(OOC: This probably doesn't much matter, but I couldn't help noticing something- when did the US and Russia make claims in Antarctica?)

Sometime in the early 90's, I think.

OOC: they never did. Both took a conscious decision not to recognize any claims in Antarctica on the basis the land should be declared international. The unclaimed bit between the NZ and British claims (Marie Byrd Land) was unofficially earmarked for the States - it is where Admiral Byrd set up the "Little America" base and did a solo wintering.

Instead the States just put in a base at the South Pole, thus cutting across all claims bar the Norwegian which is for an indeterminate area between certain parallels*, and the Soviets put bases all over the place, in every claim.

However, since the Antarctic Treaty of 1959, all claims are in abeyance. There is no real sign of the Treaty being abandoned. If it were there would be obvious tension between the British, Argentinean and Chilean claims, but under international law it is most likely that the British claim would be recognized as it was made and confirmed by occupation first.

* Most countries operate the "sector principle" - they claim land between ines of longitude that meet at the Pole. Norway however does not recognize this principle and claimed coastland between 20 degrees east and 44 degrees west, plus an indeterminate amount of land inland and out to sea.

ooc: I think it would be benefitial to all parties interested in this RP if Whittier presented a map (no matter how crude) of what Antarctic now looks like. I myself find it rather hard to stake a claim as I don't really know what landmasses are available for colonization.
