Juliette Wilson was disappointed with her luge run, individual medal chances falling to near zero. She was even more disappointed that she did not see Lou Grade at the finish, he had normally been cheering her on.
Lou was however in his chalet, nursing a knee injury that was keeping him to his room...he didn't want anyone to know about this as it would give the other teams in the doubles a massive fillip. He could see gold floating away out of reach.
He called the team medic again. "Taff, are you sure I can't use any injections?"
***
Meanwhile, for the first time in Wentland history, the homeland could watch the second round of a short track speedskating event with one of their own participating. Ian Dean took advantage of Timmer and Raymond disputing second amongst themselves and took a wide line outside the final corner to blast past them both. Petrovich of Magnus Valerius followed him and tried to pip Dean on the line but came up short.
The real work for "the Doc" starts here...his qualifying time was eleventh fastest, so progression will be difficult.

(Note: I fell asleep before finishing the last events last night, and didn’t wake up until 22:00. I had already decided to delay the giant slalom event, since otherwise the next time slot would only include a pair of hockey matches, but the other three scheduled events should proceed at 2006–04–02 05:30. Though my clock is set to UTC, the other USAnians can have fun with daylight saving time as other events take place. :p )

Chicanada

From ChicanadaSun.org
No news from the Winter Games, since Passion Liange somehow went from Second to almost the bottom. We're assuming she fell on all eight jumps to go from being .02 out from the gold to nearly 20 points out of a medal.
No word of possible injury or the fact the women's free skate was nearly a week after the short program. However, this does continue the bad streak the skaters have had, with the two Pairs teams failing to cross the top 15 threshold. Although the Kodiak team leads the Mens Skate after the short and the Dance teams are in contention, with the way things are going we fully expect them to fall on their ass.
The Kodiaks have still yet to win a medal. However, most of the matches the Kodiaks are in towards a medal round have yet to be held, so who knows if Chicanada can catch the Ylompics side's 12 medals, let alone when the nation's first will occur.
[OOC: How does one magically fall 20 points between the skates without just pulling out of the finals? Do I pretend she failed to land a jump? That just looks weird to me]

It looks weird to me, too. So does Katrina Schwartz’s miraculous comeback from near the bottom of the qualifiers to a bronze medal. She had a bad short program followed by a great free skate (either first- or second-best, I don’t remember), Liange did the opposite. They call them “random numbers” for a reason. :p
The Resurgent Dream

Diantha Palamas tried hard not to cry, at least not yet, but winning an Olympic gold medal was an incredible experience for her. She'd certainly been trying and hoping and doing her best but she hadn't even been considered the best on her team coming to Aeropag, much less a likely gold medalist. And yet here she was, standing proudly as she listened to the strains of "Long Reign the King", a single tear sliding down her cheek.
((OOC: Sorry I've been a bit behind in RP posts. There's a better, longer one coming soon.))

26 Thor Veckeria (CRO) 0:35.79
27 Harry Yates (KZO)
CR Oscilloscopeean Mens speedskater Thor Veckeria finished 26th in his first run today in what is a very large and skilled field. Veckeria after the result announced himself very pleased with his performance saying, 'it went far better than I expected'. There is still one more run of the competition to go but Thor now has very little chance of a medal. He did state though that he will do his best to give himself, and the nation, a reputable finish.

"OK, rantline now open, dial the usual number. We have Mitch from Molton...what's on your mind, Mitch?"
"Long time listener, first time caller. Um, why is ski jumping given a medal for teams? I mean, um, it's not a team sport, is it? It's, like, an individual sport. And no-one was interested."
"Yeah, so what?"
"Thanks, Bill."
"Jane from Melborough...shoot."
"We should have entered more competitors. The last few telly nights have been boring. We've got no-one in the ice dancing or figure skating. Surely we have some skaters?"
"You think figure skating is a sport?"
"Well, it has a medal..."
"Yeah, so does the Philosophy Cup. That's not a sport, is it?"
"Er, sort of..."
"Twatting about on ice in a frock is not a sport. May as well have vogueing in the Olympics."
"It's very athletic and takes a great amount of skill."
"So does painting the Grandon bridge. Should that be an Olympic sport?"
"That's not a competitive event."
"Why not? We could give each country a hundred yards to paint. First one to get to the end wins. That's more competitive than seeing who can do a triple lutz better than someone else. We don't have Olympic sculpture."
"That's an opinion borne of ignorance from someone who does not appreciate the skill and sacrifice involved."
"Oh, so you're annoyed you didn't make the team, eh, Jane?"
"No, I just think we're missing an opportunity to give exposure to some more athletes..."
"I'm with you there. I certainly think that Bethany Stevens needs a bit more exposure. Dave from Sandford, what've you got?"
"What is the point of the doubles luge? It's stupid."
"Don't be a moron, it's our best chance for gold..."
***
That best chance for gold was not looking particularly good. OK, Wentland were at the head of the table thus far, but Lou Grade was not training at all...Juliette Wilson was having to fend off queries as to why she was practicing on her own...in truth she did not know either...

Maineiacs Wins First Medal!
After more than two weeks of grief and frustration, Maineiacs has won its first ever Olympic medal. Speedskater William Shorter took home the bronze in the Men's 1500m. Shorter posted a time of 1:47.96, .2 seconds behind gold medalist Joe Blanchard of the Kazoo Peoples. Shorter's time broke the existing national record, which Shorter held. The mayor of Shorter's home town, Tonnawanda, in Allegheney Province, has declared that the date of our team's return home will be "William Shorter Day" in Tonnawanda. Shorter received a congratulatory comcall from President Ballard. When asked what he planned to do next, Shorter replied "I've had several people offer to buy me a drink, so I'd imagine that what I'll do next is get really drunk, then get a massive hangover." Shorter's teammate Miguel Fuentes, a former in-line skater from Cocoa Beach, Florida Province, finished in 19th place.
In other Olympic news, Figure skater Courtney Rogers placed 19th in the Women's competition, Our Women's Curling team lost its second game, Theresa Miller is in 8th after the first run in the Women's Giant Slalom, and we have received word that Kramer Lipshitz will be allowed to attempt to qualify in Men's 500m short track, but no word when his race will be.
UPDATE: Kramer Lipshitz was successful in his qualifying heat of the Men's 500m short track, only to falter in the Quarterfinals. Skier Toby Meyers is currently 6th in the Men's Alpine combined.

DOMI MEN THRILL
Aeropag - Team Domi's men curlers will meet favourites Jonquiere-Tadoussac in the next round of preliminaries after securing a dramatic win over Andossa Se Mitrin Vega.
Skip Georgio Mendel survived his sudden-death tie-breaker to beat Andossa Se Mitrin Vega
7-4.
Earlier, the men had lost to group leader and curling powerhouse Pacitalia, dashing any hopes of qualifying.
They came back onto the ice later for another showdown, this time with Andossa, who were tied in wins/losses with Domnonia.
Mendel had last stone advantage in the first end, and chose to blank it - a mirror of the Pacitalian game - but the tactic backfired when Andossa stole a single in the second.
Mendel's last stone into the house could not make enough impact on a collection of stones lying around the four-foot ring.
The Domi boys finally got onto the scoreboard with a double in the third.
And in the fourth end, the Domini were unlucky when Mendels attempted double take-out across the width of the house just failed, giving Andossa a two and a 4-2 lead.
But in the ninth, Marlen Clester had a complete miss with his last shot, leaving Mendel an open draw into the house for five, when Andossa immediately conceded.
Afterwards, a delighted Mendel, who was within one good round-robin win of a semi-final place, said: "If there's a hard way to do it, I think we just did."
"We had a really good games and we knew if we dug in we could get there."
Speaking about the game's turning point in the ninh end, Mendel added: "He took too much ice and missed but we'll take that, thanks very much."
Asked how he felt about making the semi-finals he said: "I don't think it's sunk in yet.
"It's going to be hard, but we want to go on and we want to play well against Jonquiere-Tadoussac, because in they are leading the tournament."
Jonquiere-Tadoussac faced the New Montreal States in Group C, with the JT conceding it's first loss in a 9-7 match against an unqualifying team.

Hay and Hänninen Win
Silver Curse Broken?
Ville Hänninen, eighth after the first run of the 500 metres, shocked every Anastasianian today with a new national record of 35.30 in the lowland Aeropag oval. The times have been slow due to the fact that Aeropag is on an island, and the humid air has been tough to handle for the skaters - nevertheless, the competitions have been outstandingly close, as showed by today's 500 metre race. 32 athletes were within a second of Hänninen - a further 12 within 1.17 - and the other Anastasianians were hopelessly adrift (Johan Ragnarsson 27th, Roger Rosendahl 48th).
Hänninen was drawn in the 25th pair after his eighth-place in the first run, skating with Raderko Sleto of Antrium, who had clocked 35.51 just like Hänninen. Amid the shouts, Hänninen got an excellent start, though Antrium coaches claimed he was way too quick - nevertheless, the opening of 9.7 was the fastest of the day thus far, and Hänninen's first inner lane was excellent. Bastiaan Smith of Ropa-Topia led the pack at the time, but Hänninen only required to repeat his 35.51 time from the first run, when a poor last inner may have cost him a couple of hundredths. In this race, however, he skated away from Sleto on the far stretch, despite Sleto having the advantage of slipstreaming, and the last outer was excellent. Anastasianians in the crowd cheered him on furiously, then glanced up at the scoreboard to see the time - and were even more shocked. The time of 35.30 was 0.01 seconds faster than the Olympic record of secret New Montreal States agent Rejean, set in the last race, and it was a personal best for Hänninen - only the second skater to set a personal best during the 500 metres of these Games. The total time of 70.81 was also the new Anastasianian record.
However, there were still three pairs left. In the 26th pair, Phillip Hubsch had an awful last inner and was completely out of it; Don Antoniou wasn't much better and finished in 35.71, all the way down in sixth place. However, the 27th pair saw both Mario Puziori of Pacitalia, a gold favourite in many distances due to his exquisite technique, and hosting hope Manfred Rotdorn. Rotdorn had little hope due to a poor start, but Puziori ran his race himself and even completed his last inner lane perfectly...only to clock 35.61 and finish 0.2 seconds behind Hänninen overall. With only one pair left, Hänninen had secured a medal, with Rejean and Russel Sayle left to go.
Rejean was the dominant man in the pair once again, as Sayle's two curves were awful - however, the clock ticked quickly, and when the Anastasianians saw Rejean's total time of 70.90 blink on the scoreboard, they let out an ecstatic cheer. After the 10,000 metre disappointments, and Sundlund's complete absence of form, this was exactly what they needed - as Hänninen agreed to afterwards. "I'd like to think this was the start of something for the whole squad. We've had some tough times recently, Jörgen has been ill and not performed well, but I'm just overjoyed to win this medal." The Anastasianian speed skating federation congratulated Hänninen with the medal, but refused to comment on rumours that the federation plans to start a professional league for speed skating.
Lower crowds were present in the cross country arena, but Anastasiania clinched gold there as well - this time through Penny Hay, who impressed in the 15 km pursuit. She went away along with Trina Biggh of Boudra-Boudra and Tobina Habor of Zertunia early on the free technique leg, and held on - with 1.5 km to spare, the three were still in a group, and the trio began skiing tactically. No one wanted to take the lead, and Hay looked like she took it grudgingly before the last climb, but suddenly started a sprint. Biggh and Harbor were left behind, and Hay held on to go across the line as winner - four seconds ahead of the sprinting Biggh and Harbor. Yvonne Leach finished third, nearly three minutes adrift, while Sara Tillwald had an awful day and broke off after the classical style leg.
Antti Hyvärinen is second in the "large" hill, where the organisers are being cautious with the speeds - the hill record of 123.5 metres is nowhere near being threatened, and Antrium's Péré had the longest jump in the first run with 116 metres. Antti Hyvärinen jumped 113.5 metres, but a better landing ensured that the gap to Péré is just 2.5 points. Jens Falk and Max Daniel both disappointed, jumping 103 and 98.5 metres respectively, and is well behind any medals. Also of note from the day is the excellent jumping of the women's nordic combined team, who are starting 1:35 ahead of their only competitors, Commerce Heights (whether medals will be awarded remains to be seen), and Mikael Morgansson crashing out of the combined slalom after a 12th place in the first run. Ilpo Hukka had two dire runs and ended 18th out of the 18 finishers. The men's curling team also lost a crucial game; needing one point in the tenth end with the last stone, Mäkelä hit the wall of Liverpool England guards with his last stone to hand one point to Liverpool England and the quarter-final place away. The women's ice hockey team is still unbeaten, and will probably secure a place in the quarter-finals with a win later today.
Larson Falls Short of Double
The lone Tynelian medalist to date, Lyle Larson attempted to add more metal to his collection as he took his place in both the 500m and 1500m speed skating event. Possibly a bit fatigued after his showing in the 1000m Larson slipped at the start and had a mediocre first ruin in the 500m with the 19th fastest time of 35.71 seconds. In fact he was barely ahead of his countryman Brad McGillis who finished 29th with a 35.83 time. Getting his act together in the second run Larson bounced back with a 35.43 which was the fifth best in the heat. However his intial poor time meant that despite this strong effort he could only rally to sixth overall .13 seconds out of a second bronze medal. McGillis fared poorly in his second effort ending up 38th overall after a 36.07 second run.
Larson then moved on to his last event, the 1500m. However once more it seemed he stretched himself too thin with entering both the 500m and the 1000m before this. He finished a solid tenth place with a time of 1:48.41 some .35 seconds out of a medal but has to wonder how he would have done if he had limited himself to two events instead of three. Larson vowed afterwards to train even harder for next year and promised to improve on his medal total next time. His countryman Clyde Owens was a non factor at 21st place with a time of 1:49.63
In other action Abigail Jones performed in the ladies free skate. After being the last qualifier to the finals Jones knew any medal hopes were out of reach. However she performed a bit better this time moving up three spots in the overall rankings, yet well behind the medalists.
A second bit of disappointing news from the curling front. After the lady curlers were eliminated in their fifth game, the men followed suit as they last their final game to group winners Ceorana. Tynelia needed to win and get some help to move on but the nation is stunned that neither of their highlky touted teams advanced to the final eight. No doubt this will inspire them for the next Olympiad.
Back to speed skating, the Tynelian women fell well short of their goals in the 1500m race. Neither Brenda Davis nor Mathilda Morris could break the top 15 with an 18th and 22nd place finish. Davis was 2 full seconds behind the medal winners and morris was even further behind.
In a relatively small field for the women's 15k cross county pursuit some felt that Tynelian Cindy Braddock might sneak in and steal a medal. However she finished in the middle of the small pack with a 7th place finish. Her time of 46:43.2 put her over a minute out of the medal contention. Braddock hung around the lead pack for the first half of the race but as the skiiers slowly dropped back as the pace continued she lost contact with the leaders at the 10k mark and hung on as best she could from there.
In women's individual sprint cross country skiing event another valiant effort fell short as Mary Williams could not sneak into the medal run. She finished a distant third in her heat almost three seconds behind the second place qualification spot. She will compete in the B finals and will hopefully be able to take the fifth place mark. This is still a good effort for her considering Tina Washington was considered the stronger skater.

Nearly there. Oh, so nearly there. Roger Stoddard and Pete Tarff were a tick away from the course record in their third 2 man bob run. It was not the fastest time of the third run, but given that they were only beaten by outsiders Alter and Claessens of Ropa-Topia, who had come from seventh to second, that was not so bad. The Boudra-Boudra bob had a mare in the third, clouting the wall throughout the second half of the run, and with the pressure slightly off the Dream Team put in a nerveless run to seize a mighty initiative.
The leaderboard makes good reading...the lead is 0.48 seconds, a lifetime in bob terms, but all too easy to be taken for granted; how much did BDB-2 lose in run 3? 0.43 seconds...
Elsewhere, Ian Dean has made it to the B final in the short track; great experience for the Doc. Harry Woods is gamely competing despite injury - although "competing" is putting it kindly; and Chrissie Carlisle is delighting crowds with her snow angels at the end of her runs, having won a bronze she is having the time of her life.

THAR BE GOLD IN AEROPAG!
After a near win at a medal, Magnus Valerius comes around and Wins Gold in the Team Ski Jumping Event
The rink was set. All nations were lined up in a big race in speedskating. The women's 1000 meter event went off with a bang, with Anna Korogiannis surprising every Valerian in sight as she did much better than the crowd favorite, Esther "Magical" Kim. Leading the way was Jessica Silversmith of Ariddia, who swept ahead of the competition halfway through. She kept a steady lead ahead of Jūn Go-min of Commerce Heights and Alessandra Marchesa of Pacitalia. Anna Korogiannis stayed steadily behind the three. She passed Jūn and Marchesa, moving up into second place behind Silversmith of Ariddia. However, at the end, it came down to fractions of a second.
Anna Korogiannis lost some steam, and at the finish line, she could not keep up the pace. She fell behind her pursuers right behind her at the last second. Although she did not medal, she performed flawlessly and did her best for the nation. She only lost by one millisecond. The competition was fierce, and she pulled through for the awesome performance, ahead of many other nations, and of course, ahead of her colleagues.
"She's on fire!" Crown Prince Ivan, a member of the snowboarding team, remarked. "She made us Valerians proud."
The fire did not cool down with Korogiannis. In the Team Ski Jumping event, Valeria's team won the day. They brought home gold after their second run put them on top of the other teams. Venizelos, Gorsky, and Dmitriev were seen with big smiles as they won first place at the event. Their fans cheered and they soon were on the pedestal, with the fanfare of Magnus Valerius's first medal (and first gold medal) at the First Winter Olympics. The crowd died down as the anthem began to play.
Ladies and Gentlemen, the National Anthem of Magnus Valerius...
The tune, "God Save the Tsar", came on, with Venizelos, Gorsky, and Dmitriev quietly singing along with the Valerians amongst the crowd.
Bozhe, Tsarya khrani!
Sil'niy, derzhavniy,
Tsarstvuy na slavu,
Na slavu nam!
God, save our mighty Tsar!
Strong and majestic
Reign he in glory,
In our glory!
Tsarstvuy na strakh vragam,
Tsar' pravoslavniy.
Bozhe, Tsarya,
Tsarya khrani!
Dread of his enemies,
Faith's sure defender,
God, save the Tsar,
Our mighty Tsar!
The crowd cheered, and the winners soon wandered off. They returned to the Olympic Village to celebrate with Anna Korogiannis over a round of drinks and some fun with a balalaika; the instrument was soon destroyed when a drunk Venizelos tried to use it as a sled.

The first ever medal won by Qazox wasin the 4-man bobsliegh as Howard cubed and Fine finished with a silver. the 4th and final run saw the black oxen needing a run of 55.63 or less to win a medal, and they finished with a Run of 55.40, easily clinching the silver, with only Boudra-Boudra's team left to run. If by some miracle that the Boudra-Boudra team crashed, Qazox would have won the gold, but once agian the team of Boudra-Boudra (Zariņš/Ktorr/Maier/Fosters) finshed cleanly. The team from Wentland finshed 3rd and took home the bronze.

MacDougal Shocks With Medal!
Ginny MacDougal came into the finals of the women's 1000m short track race a decided underdog after having the slowest qualifying time of the four women who advanced by almost a half second. With the Olympic record holder Phillipa Kennedy one of the finalists things seemed grim for MacDougal's chances. However she turned in her best run of the entire event and her time of 1:34.414 was actually closer to the gold medal time of Kennedy than it was to the fourth place time and earned a bronze. This adds to the bronze won by Lyle Larson in the 1000m men's speed skate giving Tynelia a total of two medals for this first Olympiad.
"I can't believe i did it!" a thrilled MacDougal gushed to reporters, "I mean the short track isn't very popular in Tynelia and i know i wasn't the best skater out there. I guess it just all came together for me at the right time. Everyone raced so hard today that i just tried to keep up the best i could and i managed to win a medal! Its so overwhelming really, but i'm proud to have represented my country and i did the best i could. That's all you can ask for."
The next athelete hoping for a medal will be Jenny Daniels in the women's 30km freestyle cross country ski race. The country hopes to add yet another medal here and get some momentum for the rest of the Olympiad.

Another day, another medal...bronze again, in the four-man bob. Scott Stoddard withstood the pressure of a tight leaderboard to make a nervy final run. On a slow day KEL-1 set the standard with a 55.40, which had a deleterious effect on MVA-1 as with the pressure on for a medal they lost a crucial couple of tenths. WEN-1 squeezed ahead of KEL-1 by a hundredth of a second, leaving the foursome with fingers crossed for the final five competitors.
And once NMS-1 and MAI-1 had clouted the side off tricky turn eleven a medal was guaranteed. The pressure had told. Would it affect QAZ-1? No, they equalled the Kelse bob time and took the lead. But there was no stopping Boudra-Boudra who took gold with some ease, yet again half-a-second faster than the field in their final run for deserved first place.
Nevertheless, a triumph for Jeff Jordan who has provided the tools for an inexperienced team to seize a medal.

Olympic Update
Today's olympic events were unkind to Maineiacs once again. The big story involves our 4-man bosled team, which came in to the final run in 4th place and very much in medal contention. But a mistake on turn 11 of the difficult course cost precious tenths of a second, and the team finished 7th. Elsewhere, speedskater Cara Taylor was 23rd in the women's 1500m, William Shorter, bronze medalist in the Men's 1500m, was a disappointing 47th in the 500m and refused to comment on allegations that he skated the race with a hangover, Our Women's Hockey team, as well as our Men's curling team have been eliminated from the medal rounds, and in ski jumping Toshi "Kamikaze" Tanaka is 13th after the first round of the Men's LH competition.

Since, in the next two weeks, I only have a five-minute presentation, a twenty-minute presentation, a ten-page research paper (not including the text of the GNU Free Documentation License :( ), an exam, and some miscellaneous homework to do, I’ll certainly have plenty of time to catch up on scorinating. :p
I’ve got the start lists for all of the events that were supposed to happen a day ago, but it’ll take at least an hour to put all the names in the DB and scorinate (a mass start halfpipe event would be fun with this many entrants :p ). Hopefully I’ll get it done this morning. And if I do, there’s a good chance I’ll have the next set of events done as well, since it’s not nearly as hard (no start lists or math involved). I might even get a third set in (because I really want to know who wins the womens’ nordic combined team event :p ). Normal scorination should resume, at least for a few days, tonight.

RANDOM GOLD FOR DOM
Aeropag - Domini skier Myelle Ferot, 21, bounced down a 223-metre course to win gold in the Olympic freestyle moguls event Wednesday in Aeropag, Commerce Heights.
A joyous Ferot leaped over a barrier to hug her coach before the medals were awarded.
"It just felt like a dream," she said afterward. "I didn't know that it could come true."
The native of Zaru, Sendar, is Domnonia's first medalist in these games and the first athlete to win gold.
Ferot was completely ignored by national and international media heading into the finals.
Skiing from the coveted last spot, Ferot faced stiff competition from Cordia Koshar of Andossa Se Mitrin Vega and Olani Dalis of Chicanada.
In the end, all three finished in the top positions:
* Ferot won gold with a score of 24.07
* Koshar took silver with 23.54 points
* Dalis won the bronze medal with 23.36
Ferot's win is a good start, comming extremely late in the games, for the Domini Olympic team that is aiming to take home atleast 4 medals from Aeropag. Going into the competition she wasn't considered to be one of the team's hopes for a medal.
The moguls final was held at night, under the lights. With loud music bouncing off the walls of the "fake winter" complex, the event had the air of a rock concert. And there was plenty of support for Ferot as Domini flags waved in the 4,000-seat grandstand.
One blotch occurred when the announcer introduced her as a Pacitalian, triggering a chorus of boos. The announcer quickly corrected himself.
Back home
Ferot sent a message to her friends and family through the media: "What can I say, you guys are awesome! I felt your support all day today."
That support was evident in spades at a Zaru restaurant, where her friends gathered, and at a northeast Sendar home, where her family watched her compete.
In both places, people exploded with joy, little Domini flags in their hands, when they saw she had won gold. Champagne corks popped too.
"I'm so proud of Myelle, she worked so hard. We knew that she would get the gold and bring it back home," said Laura Witt, a cousin.
"She did it, she made her dreams come true," said Shelly Hoffas, mother of one of Ferot's close friends.

This is An archist News, the official station of the An archist NS Winter Olympic Team.
Patty Paterson: Stew Stewson is set to become a national hero if he can pull out a gold medal, or any medal for that matter, in the snowboard halfpipe competition, the most popular winter sport among young An archists. After achieving the highest score, 38.4, in the qualification round, Stewson is in good position to take home An archy's very first NS Olympic medal. He had this to say after the competition:
Stew Stewson: I thought my run was pretty tight overall. There a still a couple of things I wanna fine tune before the finals. Hopefully, I'll be able to land a couple of huge 1080 indy grabs. If I can do that, I really like my chances of winning this thing.
Patty Paterson: In other Olympic action, Jill Jillson and Kraigh Kraigson came in a close fourth, barely missing a medal in the figure skating pairs competition.
Kraig Kraigson: Yeah, we're pretty disapointed. Ya know, it was just a couple of little mistakes that made the difference. I guess the little things can be pretty important sometimes. But we'll be back in four years. Hopefully we'll improve and have something to show for our efforts next time around.
Patty Paterson: And so, later this week, Stewson will compete for our nation's first ever Olympic medal. Be sure to tune into the live broadcast here on An archist News.

Maineiacs poised for possible medal:
Allison Compton has made the finals in Women's aerials, and stands a good chance at Maineiacs' second medal at the 1st Winter Olympics. Compton scored an average score in the first round -- 82.09, putting her in 8th place. On her second jump, she performed her "triple flapjack reverse twist" and scored 95.90, hightest in the round and catapulting her to 3rd overall. In an interview, Ms. Compton said "I feel really pumped up after that jump. I'm sure this will follow me into the finals."
In other Olympic News, our Women's Curling team will play the Resurgent Dream in the Quarterfinals, our Men's hockey team will face Pacitalia, Keenan Waters received the highest score in the 2nd round of qualifiers in Men's Halfpipe, scoring 34.8, and now moves on the the finals, and Kamikaze Tanaka finished 10th in the Men's NH.

EDIT: And apparently there’s a bigger mistake—the nordic combined LH individual events have three ski jumping events (first round, final round, competition round), when only the last is actually supposed to be there. Three of the four extra events have already been completed (both for men, first round for women), and I’m sure the athletes will benefit greatly from the practice. The final round of the womens’ event will go on as scheduled (but will not be scorinated), the competition round of each will actually be used to determine time delays for the sprint. "We're with the 11th Parachute Battalion here at Vinson Base...the lads are watching to see whether one of their own, Lieutenant Peter Tarff, can collect an Olympic gold medal...he's Wentland's best hope at the moment in the two-man bob...we have his commanding officer, Brigadier Morgan, here...Brigadier, what do you reckon?"
"They have half-a-second in hand which ought to be enough...but one never knows...the Olympics have already thrown up a few shocks..."
"And indeed one in these final runs. Barthez and Nasrati came into contention from fifth place with a fifty-six twelve...we've just seen the Qazox bob equal the course record with a magnificent display from part-time medic McCoy and amateur pilot Kirk...they're in the current gold position, a 56.57 would be enough for gold if neither of the other 2 bobs improve..."
The battalion watched anxiously as BDB2 came down from bronze position. It was however a disaster. Maier slipped on the push-off and the lost momentum caused the bob to drop all the way down to the lower reaches of the top ten.
Now for RTS1...a hundredth up on BDB2 going into the final run...and it was not a good un, clouting turn 11. A forty-five, it saw them drop into provisional bronze. Roger Stoddard and Pete Tarff knew what they had to do.
"Jeff, your bob design has helped bring Stoddard and Tarff to within a minute of Olympic gold...it's in the bag, surely?"
"Many a slip, Steve. Many a slip..."
"And here's the moment that all of Wentland has been waiting for...Stoddard and Tarff, rocking the Stellar bob back and forth...and goooooo!!!! Good start...all they need to do is copy what they've done before..."
At Vinson Base you could not hear the commentary. Viewers on WTV2 saw the footage of the soldiers' expectant faces staring at the screen, yelling, screaming. First split time, half-a-second inside gold, still.
"YEEEAHHHH!!!"
"Down through eight and nine...taking a very conservative line there...out through ten..."
"OOOOOHHH!!!"
"Ohh...they've clouted turn eleven there...that will cost them at least four-tenths and the cannot get back the momentum...has that cost gold???"
Jeff Jordan had a look of horror on his face.
"Thirteen...fourteen...it's going to be tight...three forty-five oh three to beat...into the stretch..."
The bob crossed the thin red line and the screen graphic flashed up.
WEN-1 (Stoddard/Tarff) (1.) 3:44.95 (-0.08)
"GOLD!!!!! IT'S GOLD!!!!!!! GOLD FOR WENTLAND!!!! AND JORDAN FLINGS HIS HAT IN DELIGHT!!!!!!"
The cheers from Vinson Base could be heard all the way back to the Warplands.
TRÉGOR WINS GOLD!
The third medal, and second gold for Antrium was won by Lélàn Trégor today in the 15-kilometer Women's Individual Gundersen Nordic Combined Skiing event. Trégor, a 24-year-old from Nouvelle Strasbourg, Véo, beat two highly favored Anastasianian athletes, Nina Joelsson and Sofia Ketomäki, who won silver and bronze, respectively, to take the gold, with a time of 40:12.2.
Trégor couldn't be reached before the event, but was reported as being somewhat nervous. This is the first international competition for her, and her fourth major competition.
She was the only Antrian entered in the small event, which totaled only 8 athletes. Zertunian skier Evansa Conben finished fourth, Lyu Ji-bi of Commerce Heights took fifth, Anastasianian Desiree Porter was sixth, Kelly Horbin, another Zertunian, finished seventh, and Schiavonian Alma Johnson finished eighth.

Malabrians finally win the ultimate prize.
AEROPAG, COMMERCE HEIGHTS--The Malabrian Women's Team Pursuit team went to Aeropag in search of one thing- to prove themselves worthy of international competition. They did just that by winning a bronze medal on Saturday behind the teams of Krytenia and powerhouse and hometeam Commerce Heights.
Back home in Malabra, thousands of Malabrians flooded the streets of Mishba District at around 9:26 AM local time once the medal was asured. Celebrations accross the country were commonplace. The crowds were there for national pride and not national anguish like they had previously when the Malabrian Men's Curling Team was eliminated. Most participated in singing the national anthem and displaying the Malabrian flag. There was an obvious sign of community and that's just what many Malabrians say they need as we undergo an economic crisis.
This is the first international sporting award granted to Malabra and even its first international award overall.
"This deffinitely put us on the map today. We've been a big country, but nobody outside of the IDU has seemed to notice us," excstatic reveler Jandaq Oriaq said.
The Royal Family and Royal Parliament were also pleased with the results.
"On behalf of all Malabrians, we'd like to thank them for trying so hard. We really appreciate it. It brings pride to our county and they should feel proud of themselves," the King stated.
As for the team members, they were just as happy as the revelers. Tears streamed down all their eyes once the Malabrian flag was hoisted up. It was even a struggle to get to the podium. We are told that they have been invited to the Royal Parliament and Royal Palace for a face-to-face meeting after the games are over.
Although they didn't win gold or silver, these women are deffinitely heroes in the eyes of Malabrians.

The Wentland women were mentally and physically shattered. Only 7 teams in the women's speedskating relay so a 57% chance of getting to the final. But they had got drawn into the 4 team semi and against gold favourites Pacitalia.
And coming into the final corner it was looking good as, against all odds, they were running winning, just ahead of Pacitalia after 4 minutes of frantic skating. The Kazoo team was a few seconds further back, a lifetime in speedskating terms, and the Becquerelian team was sitting back waiting for the charge.
Then it happened. Samandora dived into the corner from an outside line. Leigh Miles was somewhat startled but managed to keep a skate ahead. Until Samandora wobbled and collided with Miles, who went out wider and wider and almost had to stop to avoid hitting the barriers.
The Pacitalian team coasted over the line, easy winners. Becquerelia took advantage and accelerated into second and poor Leigh Miles, from almost a standing start, desperately flung herself over the line, a scant half-second behind Gamew.
There was no consoling the Wentland team. Most of their hopes lay in the relay as individually they were still inexperienced or second-rank. And one moment of madness from another team had cost them dear. Leigh Miles was in tears, Debbie Flint not far short.
Half-an-hour later and the tears had turned to joy. A jury of appeal had looked at the incident and ruled that Samandora's wobble was self-inflicted and by colliding with Miles she obtained an unfair advantage. The only option was disqualification. And Wentland had made it to the final. The only speed-skating success for the Swifts.

NATION THANKS GOD FOR CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING
"Because We're Not Very Good at Everything Else" Says Official
Winter Sports fans across the Archregimancy were giving thanks unto God last night for the team's second Olympic Medal, as Fathers Michael, Yuri, Vladimir and Polycarp brought home the bronze in the cross-country relay. This was Fr. Michael the Classicist's second medal of the Games, as he made an early claim on being the Archregimancy's most successful Winter Olympian.
Fr. Michael and Fr. Yuri the Pursuer had earlier competed in the Cross-Country Pursuit, where Fr. Yuri came desperately close to winning the bronze, finishing a mere five tenths of a second behind Darrell Johnson of the Kazoo Peoples. In what was a remarkably close event, Fr. Michael finished a mere 36 seconds behind Fr. Yuri in 6th. MOCTA officials were left red-faced in the lead-up to the event after it appeared that they had filed the wrong entry paperwork after confusing the Cross-Country Pursuit with the Biathlon Pursuit, but prayerful supplication of the Commerce Heights authorities allowed Fathers Yuri and Michael to participate anyway.
"Thank God for Cross-Country Skiing" said a senior Archimandrite, speaking on condition of anonymity "because we're not very good at anything else - being pursued across the wintry north of the Archregimancy by packs of howling man-eating wolves is wonderful training for the God-fearing monastic athlete. Unfortunately, opposing athletes seem to be even more motivated at not having to sit through another 2 hour Archregimancy gold-medal ceremony. Have they no appreciation for the beauty of the liturgy?"

"Gold and More Gold" by Nev Gould
The 1km Short-track speed-skating final was Bazalonia's best hope for a medal, with Luke MacDonald being the Olympic Record holder. Not only did he win a medal, taking the total medal tally to 2, but it was a Gold Medal. Luke celebrated by doing a Snow Angel, it was scored at being 22.1 by his good friend and Figure Skater Jollie MacKay. But now his olympic run is over but not to be out down was our male Normal hill Ski Jumpers with Isaac Campbell taking Gold over Johe Rog of Zertunia and André Thibault from New Montreal States. Seth Jones fellow Ski Jumper was in Seventh place and was only 15.5 points from his compatriate.
Bazalonia despite only sending a few athletes is now currently 9th with the 2 golds and the one bronze.

Tighter than a bobsledder's outfit
With one run to go in the womens' double bob, Ellie Lombard and Divina Welsh are in the lead.
But this is not the sort of comforting lead that the men's double team had.
No, their lead is a mighty two hundredths of a second ahead of Boudra-Boudra.
And a further four-tenths ahead of Liverpool England.
If there is any crumb of comfort for the girls before the final run, it is that they are very likely to get a medal. Barring disasters. They are a half-second or so inside so a clean run will get them a bronze at least.
However they do not want a bronze. They want a gold.
"It was a very difficult third run," explained Lombard. "The ice seemed to be slower, no-one could set a good time. Except Liverpool England and one or two others."
"They had not re-iced the track properly," complained Welsh. "There has been such a gap since the last run here that it has been allowed to melt and re-freeze. That has reduced the advantage as there are all sorts of cracks and if you catch one of them you can lose a few hundredths. It's almost random if you avoid that which explains a few unexpected teams setting good times."
The girls have a short break before taking to the track for the fourth and final time. Gold medal favourites coming into the event, they have led two rounds...can they lead the one that matters?

Three hundredths. Three lousy hundredths. Walsh and Lombard could not speak to each other as they saw their score flash up. Gold dashed from their very lips. They could barely raise a smile at the podium ceremony.
Where had it gone wrong? The push-off? That little slip in turn 6? Eating too much for breakfast? Eating too little for breakfast?
The truth of it was that it was so close, so tight between the top three, that it was almost random who would win. And that was tough to bear. A bit more effort would have seen an easy gold. A bit more luck. A bit more anything.
The Swifts back in the village were ecstatic for them, a fifth medal of the games, but Divina and Ellie were not celebrating. They went straight to their dorm, locked the door and lay down, brooding, sobbing.
The silence was broken by Ellie Lombard. "Another four years?"

The women's 2-woman bobsliegh team mecifully end thier 4th run earlier today as they finished dead last among the 25 teams with a time of over 4seconds behind the gold-medal winning team from Liverpool England. Perhaps it was not a good idea to use a pair of 230-lb women as they were consistantly over .50 seconds off every other team's time during the push-off. Eliza/Elisa's final run time: 58.68, Overall time:3:55.27.
In other events Jadzia Troi finished 9th overall in her first ever luge competiton at the young age of 17, next time look out, she'll be one of the best in the world. her 4th run time was: 47.114 the 3rd fastest run of the comp, but her slip during the push on run 3 cost her a medal. Her Overall time was: 3:10.019, almost a second off a bronze medal.
This intrepid reporter has asked repeatedly the hosts of these games, Commerce Heights, as to why the 1st run of the Double's Luge was on Day 1 of the schedule, but somehow the other runs have mysteriously dissapeared from the schedule. Considering that after the 1st run, Qazox had 2 sets of lugers in medal contention (2nd and 3rd), I think its a conspiracy to prevent Qazox from winning a Gold Medal in any event. I reviewed the men's giant slalom final in snowboarding, and to me at least, it didn't look like Alberto Ramierez missed that gate, which caused him to gain a1/2 second penalty, just enough to have him finish with the silver. No proof yet of the conspiracy, just wondering....hmmm.

In the end the final run was easy for Juliette Wilson and she wrapped up the bronze with a minimum of fuss. The pressure seemed to be getting to the other sliders and a consistent run was all that was needed.
But although delighted with her bronze Wilson was disappointed with her team-mate's reaction. "I thought Lou would turn up, after all we are paired in the doubles..."
Lou Grade was not present to see his partner secure a medal. He was still having intensive treatment on his knee, a cracked patella and ligament damage putting his further participation in doubt. He did not want to let on to Wilson before her singles runs.
He had decided, however, that he was going to get through it. Somehow.

CROSS-COUNTRY STAR TO CARRY FLAG AT CLOSING CEREMONY
The Monastic Olympic Committee of the Archregimancy today announced that multiple medal winner Fr. Michael the Classicist would carry the nation's flag at the Olympic closing ceremony.

MOCTA would also like to take this opportunity to state that it has no intention of revising its policy of allowing team members to wear their full monastic robes during competition, despite demonstrated problems in the luge, bobsled and ski-jumping events.
MOCTA would further like to take this opportunity to express disappointment that only New Montreal States has so far supported MOCTA's attempt to have Winter Vigils added to the Winter program as a full medal sport.

Qazox gets its 4th silver medal of the Olympics and 2nd in Snowboarding as Tyra Lopez was edged out by Sakamoto Asuka. Ms. Lopez was in the lead after the last gate by more than 3 seconds, but in what could only be attributed to a severe case of Brain-fart, she tried to do a backflip over the last jump, crashed and just barely managed to cross the line in 2nd place, but her Brain-fart cost her the gold.
MS Lopez had this to say afterwards:
I guess my excitment got the better of me and I was trying to put a little flair into the event.
In the 1st run of men's halfpipe Finals Matthew Earnhardt was in 11th place with one run left to go, but only revieve a 20.9 in his 2nd run to finish 12th place.

Shouldn't I be sixth?
Yes. It’s fixed now.
I’m not sure when, but the next events should be up in 2–4 hours.
ooc: are you going to post any more results from Doubles Luge??? Been waiting a while for them.....
Yes, that event will be finished tomorrow. I’ll probably post a list of all of the remaining events that are on the schedule with the next results, so you can all tell me which event I really did miss. :p

I didn't post that. I don't have a doubles luge team.
So I confused the team with four silver medals and nothing else for the team with four bronze medals and nothing else. It’s not a big difference, is it? :p

The same way Fr. Vasily came from behind to win gold in mens’ figure skating—pseudo-random numbers.

Then I’d have that 15th silver I want for an RP. :p

Yes, he was. I just decided to call it something else for the semifinals. But since apparently this caused some confusion, I’ll have to go back and change it. :p
The next set of scores should be up in about an hour. The closing ceremony is currently scheduled for 11:00 today (2006–04–15), but may be moved earlier or later if necessary.

Snowboard—Mens’ Snowboard Cross—Semifinals
Qazox's hope for a 2nd men's medal in Snowboarding is just that hope as Qwijibo just got edged out by 5 inches for the spot into the medal final. He'll race in the 5th place final tommorrow, but this has to be a dissapointment for the best Snowboard Crosser Qazox has.
Qiuck Update Update: Men's Skeleton has finally been run and here's the results so far: Qazox has 2 men in the top 6 and hopefully William Picard will recover from his slip during the push-off. I'm glad that the NSOC allowed Qazox' athletes to competer in this event even though they were banned from the singles Luge due to Marijuana consumption.

From MSPN--
Sean gould had a disappointing run in the semifinals of Men's Snowboard Cross, and will compete in the "B" final.. Barring a disaster in the "A" final, this means Gould has no chance at a medal. There remain 4 events in which we have a chance to medal: Women's halfpipe, Women's Alpine Combined, Women's Aerials, and Men's Aerials. This reporter hopes to see our female atheletes bring home some medals to match (or even exceed) our male atheletes.
Update: Sean Gould finished 5th in the Snowboard Cross, winning the "B" final with, ironically, a time better than any of the medal winners. Miguel Fuentes was 20th in the Speedskating 5000m.

The Aeropag Tribune—Donate to the Jativan Reunification Fund today!
Local: Capitalizt Olympic Committee to build ambitious monument?
AEROPAG, JI—Seventeen days. Fifteen silver medals. An impressive Olympic run for the home team, about to be wiped out when the multi-million gold ounce land auction after the closing ceremony carves up Yates Island into hundreds of skyscrapers.
Or is it?
A recent press announcement by the Capitalizt Olympic Committee indicated that they had “something special” planned to commemorate these first Olympic Games. And recent financial reports indicate that the organization, a subsidiary of a subsidiary of the CHEAT Alliance, had recently purchased huge quantities of .944 grade Chorion silver, the same metal used in the Olympic medals, using the unused funds from the Olympic budget.
There has been wild speculation as to the nature of the COC’s plans, ranging anywhere from a silver coating for Yates Island to a wall around the city of Aeropag. “It took a lot of work to get that much silver out of our mines,” said Gary Bunch, spokesperson for Prontera Mining and Manufacturing. “I can’t imagine what anyone could possibly want with it.”

"two laps to go...and all four teams can still win it...this is an amazing run by the Swifts but they're stuck in third...Kennedy is holding off the Malabrian as the bell goes...Gamew is shot...final corner, Malabria goes for it...and LEIGH MILES HAS GONE INSIDE BOTH OF THEM!!!! Oh my God, she's WON GOLD!!!!! GOLD FOR WENTLAND!!!! BY ONE-HUNDREDTH OF A SECOND!!!!
They were OUT of it following the semi finals...those tears of sorrow have turned into tears of joy...what strange alchemy is this that turns despondency into gold...
You could have got twelve to one against them winning gold in the final but that effort was superhuman...the slow time helped somewhat but, against all odds, Wentland has its second gold of the games...Sally-Ann Triplett, Janette Tough, Leigh Miles and Debbie Flint are absolutely beside themselves...I think they're on their fourth lap of honour now...the small but noisy Wentland contingent is almost on the ice with them..."
Alas elsewhere it was not so good for the Swifts. Lou Grade was able to limp to the doubles luge for the second run but his lack of fitness cost them gold - a mere five-hundredths being the difference. Dee Guest had the women's skeleton bob sown up until some twat threw a snowball onto the course, costing her a second. Despite a protest and Bostin Vee Austin hurling herself into the crowd and pummelling the perpetrator the result stood as was. And although the Duke of Howe excelled himself with silver in the men's skeleton Bill Barnard missed out on bronze by a squeak.
So it looks like "Keep Right On" will only be played twice at the Olympics...but five silvers...how close is the gap between victory and defeat.

Liverpool England, Crna Gora Liv Eng claim two medals each on last day of competition
The last day of competition in the First Winter Olympics saw both Liverpool England and protectorate Crna Gora Liv Eng claim two medals each. Liverpool England's women curlers picked up a second gold for the country, defeating Ropa-Topia 6-5 in a thrilling eleven-end game, while Dolores Haire won an unexpected silver in the women's halfpipe; her first run score of 30.6 enough to secure silver desipte her fall on her second run.
The protectorate of Crna Gora Liv Eng also picked up two medals on the last day, both from cross-country (the only non-team event the protectorate was entered in), with Dejan Vilko powering to a silver in the men's 50km mass-start just four. hours after he was the final skiier in the team sprint final. However, he slammed organisers for putting the two events on the same day when there would almost certainly be skiiers in both events. "It was ridiculous. I had very little time to recover from my first ski. I'm delighted with the medals I have."

No more medals for Maineiacs
Olympic competition ended today with Maineiacs' women coming up empty. Mary Donaldson finished 13th in Women's Alpine Combined, while her temmate Theresa Miller was 10th in the Giant Slalom. Allison Compton was 5th in Women's Aerials, and Chrissy Stevens was a close 4th in the Halfpipe. When asked about participating in the upcoming Summer Olympics, MOC President Luther Goran had no comment.

A very Busy Final day
The B-final of Men's snowboard cross ended and Qwijibo finshed a dissapointing 3rd palce, 7th place overall as he was edged at the line the the 2nd staright race this time by Midorikawa Naoki of Pschycotic Pschyos. Qwijibo finished with a time of 1:20.79, which ironically enough would have won him gold in the A-final.
In other events...Skeleton—Mens’ Run 2
a dissapointing day for Qazox as Jean-Luc Crusher and Wesley Riker fell short of winning medals as they started 3rd and 7th. a poor second run by Crusher drooped him from third to 6th place, inly 7/100ths of a second from 3rd place.
Final Results for Qazox:
6-Jean-Luc Crusher Times: 58.52 58.75 1:57.27
7-Wesley Riker Times: 58.77 58.67 1:57.44
23-William Picard TImes: 59.55 59.25 1:58.80
The big news of the day was the double's Luge where Qazox dominated, winning 2 medals 1st first gold and a bronze. the team of Jean-Luc Crusher and Ro Dax, set a new track record with a time of 45.042, and waited as the team of Grade/Wilson form wentland came down the track. the final run time of 45.190 by Grade/Wilson, won the 1st gold for Qazox at these games. The team of Wesley Riker and Jadzia Troi won the bronze with a time of 1:30.501, over a 1/2 second over third place.

Bertalan/Cantelarro (KRY) DNF DNF
In the Women's halfpipe, Sasha Boxer, couldn't improve her 1st run score of 24.7 and finshed in 7th place.
Overall, a slightly dissapointing medal haul for Qazox, 1 gold, 4 silvers and a bronze is a good start with the few events the Oxen participated in, but more was expected. The biggest suprise of the games for Qazox, was that is women's curling team make the Quarterfinals, depite being ranked 16th in the world; the biggest disspointment was the suspension of the men's skeleton team, who could have walked away with at least 2 medals. Qazox finshed 19th in the overall standings and tied for 13th in total medals won. A nice start for our Olympians and in four years, we should do better.
