NationStates I Olympic Winter Games—Signups

Signups are now closed—no new entrants can be accepted. You can watch the Games in the RP thread (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=473432).

After being voted by the NationStates Olympic Committee (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=468317) as the host city of the first Olympic Winter Games, the city of Aeropag officially opens signups for the Games to all NSOC members (if you’re not already a member, you can sign up for that (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=468317), too).

Each nation is permitted to send a delegation of up to 170 athletes, participating in any or all of the eighty-nine events that will be contested at the Games. When signing up, you must provide names for each of these athletes, so other nations will have something to call them in RPs (but you can use a random name generator (http://www.thirdgeek.com/2006/names/) to create these names, or provide lists of first and last names (or however many sets of names your nation’s naming system requires :p ) and ask that I create one). Each of these athletes may have a skill value, which can be expressed as a ranking or any numeric value system you’re willing to explain—inside the guts of the scorinator (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/Scorinate), it will be a floating-point value between 0.25 and 0.75, but it’s simple enough to convert. All athletes in your nation will have their rankings adjusted to a mean of 0.5, unless you specify a lower value—as low as 0.25, but at that level, all of your athletes will be equally bad. Note that there is a small bonus for nations entering few athletes and a small penalty for nations entering many athletes—not enough to come close to balancing the number of medals the nations will get, but hopefully enough to discourage everyone from sending a delegation of maximum size.

Signups for the Games will be closed at 2006–03–17 00:00 UTC. The Games will start at 2006–03–17 08:00 in some time zone, but I haven’t yet decided whether this will be UTC or my local time (UTC−0600). A complete schedule of events (http://www.thirdgeek.com/2006/nsolympics/aeropagschedule.ods) (OpenDocument (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenDocument) spreadsheet, 12.7 KiB (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Binary_prefix)) is available in an open file format (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_format), since certain other NSOC members have been most unhelpful in producing a specification for a format produced by some popular proprietary software (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Excel).

Below is a list of the maximum number of athletes that each nation is allowed to enter in each event—no (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No) more (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/More) links (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Links), I (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I) promise (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Promise)! :p

So what with [NS]Bazalonia, who submitted an athlete for the pursuit only?

The Becquerelian Winter Olympic Team

OOC: In the biathlon event 'pursuit' the startlist normally depends on the result of the sprint.
Slani, I forgot to remove the pursuit on the signup list. Thanks for pointing that out. :)

I’ll ask Bazalonia about that on IRC, and fix the list in the first post for everyone else.

Also, Schiavonia has made me realize that not all nations will want their athletes’ rankings adjusted to a mean of 0.5. If you do want a reduced average strength for your athletes (because you’re not good at winter sports, you’re Abysmalistan, et cetera), you can request any mean value between 0.25 (at which all of your athletes will be 0.25, since lower values are not possible) and 0.5. I’ll update the first post to include this, too.
Stevid
12-03-2006, 20:05
STEVIDIAN TEAM (SVD)

Stevid will only be sending two teams for the Ice Hockey. One for Women and one for Men. (OOC: this is because Ice Hockey is the only winter olympic sport i understand properly ;))

The Team is as follows:

Mens Team
One Mens Hockey Team- First Team of Six minus subsititutes
(Over all Skill Rating: 0.58)

Womens Team
One Womens Hockey Team- First Team of six minus subsititutes
(Over all skill rating: 0.36)

OOC: If you need names for the team members, just say and i'll edit the post. And again i say Stevid will participate in just one sport purely because in RL terms i "just" understand it- every other sport just blows over my head with the speed of a concorde.
I don't quite understand the skill rating thing so i've had ashot at it and i hope everything is okay....

If you are on this list, please sign up in the NSOC thread (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=468317), where you will be given a three-letter abbreviation and be permitted to vote in any future host elections.

You can also specify a 3-letter abbreviation of your own choosing, if you make sure it hasn't already been taken. There's also an NSwiki article listing all existing 3-letter sports' codes (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/Nation_codes), where you can add yours.

Feel free also to add yourselves here (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/Template:Winter_Olympiad_I).

The Capitalizt Olympic Committee has chosen the 119 athletes that will represent the Unified Capitalizt States in the I Olympic Winter Games.

Athlete strengths are represented on a per-sport basis, rather than per-entry. Each strength will apply to each entry in that sport. The mean of the athlete values is approximately 0.46—the values will not be adjusted to 0.5, since the UCS really do slani at all winter sports other than biathlon and speedskating. :p

Magnus Valerius (MVA) will sign up for the Winter Olympics.

Here is the tentative delegation. I'll make some changes if there are scheduling conflicts (since I have yet to review the schedule :p)

For easier viewing, see the NSwiki Page (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/Magnus_Valerius_at_the_First_Winter_Olympics).

And since I am lost on how to use the scorinators, I'll leave the athletes unranked for now... Maybe I'll figure it out somehow... If I don't, I'll do it all manually. In the meantime, I have a few rankings up... So assume other athletes that are unranked are at [.5].

The Archregimancy
15-03-2006, 00:00
OOC: The below is adapted/edited from the wiki (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/The_Archregimancy_at_the_First_Winter_Olympics).

______________________________________________________________

The Archregimancy's presence at the First Winter Olympics came as a surprise to many nations who didn't anticipate that the Orthodox Christian monks of the Dreamed Realm's most devout nation would send a delegation.

Yet in the cold far north of the Archregimancy, many of the Slavic monasteries contain winter sports experts for the simple reason that skiing, skating, and sledding are often the best - indeed, the only - way to travel during the devastatingly fierce northern winters.

The Archregimancy's participation was overseen by the Monastic Olympic Committee of the Archregimancy (MOCTA). The delegation's official sports' code is ARC.

The Archregimancy sent eleven athletes for individual events, and one team of two athletes for bobsleigh (the cross-country relay team consists of athletes participating in individual events) which put the nation's full delegation at a mere 13 athletes. Fr. Vasily of the Frozen Lakes (figure skating) was the team's flag-bearer at the Opening Ceremony.

While most of the delegation were understandably from the northern Slavic monasteries, there were a couple of exceptions: cross-country skiier Fr. Polycarp Who Endures and normal hill ski-jumper Fr. Theophilus the Flyer, both from Hellenic monasteries.

[OOC - all athletes are rated .50 unless otherwise noted]

Bobsleigh
2 MAN MEN – Fr. Gennady the Driver, Fr. Sergei the Braker

15KM CLASSICAL MEN – Fr. Michael the Classicist (.60), Fr. Yuri the Pursuer (.40)

PURSUIT MEN - Will enter if Cross-Country team members qualify

4x10KM RELAY MEN - Fr. Michael the Classicist, Fr. Yuri the Pursuer, Fr. Vladimir of the Blessed Birch Forest, Fr. Polycarp Who Endures (team average is .50)

[OOC - With the exception of Fr. Ivan of the Sharpened Blades, I've tried to make sure that the average score of the entire team is .50. So, once again with the exception of Fr. Ivan, every score above .50 is balanced by a score below .50. I know I didn't have to do this, but I like the concept of balancing things then allowing an additional skilled athlete or two - if turned into a precedent, it might help to avoid 'super team' wankery consisting of nothing but world class athletes - though in fairness everyone seems to have avoided the temptation so far.]

It may be the first Olympics ever, but it is also the first Olympic delegation by the Kazoo Peoples. Their country code is TKP, we think. Or it's KZO. Check the Wiki.

Women's sports have yet to flourish in our nation, so that is why you will only find one entry for each women's category.

This is An archist News, the official station of the An archist NS Olympic team.
Patty Paterson: The first NS Winter Olympic Games will begin later this week and the nation of An archy will send a relatively small delegation of seventeen athletes mainly in the subjectively judged events. Here is the official list of An archist athletes to compete in these Winter Games:

Ski Jumping:
(Mens') Shane Shaneson - Known among his friends as an extreme daredevil, Shaneson has very powerful legs but undisciplined form. If he manages to stay patient in the air he could be a medal winner. That said, he probably won't be bringing home any medals. (.32)
Skeleton:
(Womens') Jane Janeson - Her awareness has been key to her outstanding success in national events. This, however, is an international event, and one cannot be sure if she will dominate as much as she does among her fellow citizens. (.44)
(Mens') Farley Farlson - Known as "the Skeleton of the skeleton" because of his tall thin build, he has a tremendous ability to take corners aggressively. This could lead to a crash, but if he manages to avoid this, he could win gold. (.55)
Figure Skating:
(Individual Mens') Hew Hewson - Among the best skaters in the country, Hewson will rely on athleticism for a chance at a medal. At the age of 17, he might not be experienced enough to win on the international stage. (.48)
(Individual Mens') Kyle Kyleson - Kyleson is a true perfectionist, and perfection is what you can expect from him. He has been practicing sixteen hours a day in preperation for these games. He is An archy's best shot at a gold medal. (.75)
(Individual Womens') Jamie Jamison - Probably not as skilled as some of the skaters who didn't make the team, the An archist Olympic Commitee decided to send Jamison as a training experience. Only twelve years old, if she improves as much as her coaches hope, she'll be the best skater on the planet. For the first Winter Games, however, she probably won't do very well. (.44)
(Individual Womens') Michele Michelson - An amazing athlete, Michelson has the uncanny ability to land quads consistently. Apart from that, she doesn't bring much to the table. She'll challenge for a medal , but not for a gold. (.68)
(Individual Womens') Blaze Blazeson - In the twilight of her figure skating career, Blaison herself doesn't expect much from these games. She's simply glad to have the opportunity to compete internationally before her retirement. (.48)
(Pairs Mixed) Jenny Jenison and Kraig Kraigson - Although they are not as well practiced as their competition in this event, they are talented. Also, they seem to truely enjoy themselves out on the ice. Hopefully, that will allow them to perform at their best. (.7)
Freestyle Aerial Skiing:
(Mens') Ray Rayson - Freestyle Aerial Skiing is a young sport on the island of An archy. Rayson, therefore, has not had sufficient coaching. He is a very agressive jumper and his performances should be fun to watch. (.30)
(Womens') Daniela Danson - Although she can grab some massive air, her agility is mediocre. She has been training rigerously to improve that aspect of her performance. Tune in next week to find out the exciting conclusion! (.30)
Snowboard Halfpipe:
(Mens') Stewart Stewson - 1080 Man, the most popular winter sport athlete in the country, will thrill New Manhattan crownds with his uncanny ability to land multiple 1080's in one routine. He dominates the national competition, and he should hold his own internationally. (.75)
(Mens') Hayek Hayekson - A snowboard veteran, Hayekson will be competing in his first and final Olympic Games. Back in the day, he was as good, if not better than, Stewson. Now, however, he has little chance at a medal. (.41)
(Mens') Google Googleson - If Hayekson is the past of snowboarding and Stewson is the present, then Googleson is the future of halfpipe snowboarding on the island. At the ripe age of 15, he has the potential to be a spectacular boarder. This Olympics will serve as a preview of things to come. (.40)
(Women') Fayet Fayetson - Will she attempt a 1080? You can count on it. Is she good enough to land it? Noone can be sure. If she does, the gold will be a sure thing. (.65)
(Womens') Sarah Sarison - Sarison doesn't have the athleticism of Fayetson, but she does have finesse and determination. That might be enough to challenge for a medal. (.44)
(Womens') Sharlene Sharlson - The third member of An archy's Womens' Snowboard Halfpipe Team, Sharlson is the wild card. She is very aggressive in the pipe, but she often bails near the end of her run. If she can avoid eating snow she'll probably win a medal. She probably won't win a medal. (.41)
Patty Paterson: The Games will officially begin with the opening ceremonies on Friday.

I think ice hockey is 24 for men and 20 for women, and curling is 5 for each.

For curling, check out Wikipedia (not NSWiki) and look at a RL team. I was checking out the Swiss Olympic roster when building my country's roster.

For curling you'll need a Skip, Third, Second, Lead/First, and Reserve. I could be wrong though. :)

However, a number of us have left off the Reserve from our rosters. (Originally I had an reserve, but when I noticed a number of NSWiki players just listing the players whom are most likely to actually play, I dropped my Reserve.)

How many do I need for a hockey team? I know there are five starters and a goalie, but how many reserves should I have? Oh, and neither the random name generator nor the point generator work for me.

I think ice hockey is 24 for men and 20 for women, and curling is 5 for each.

Usually it's 23 for men.

4 forward lines of 3 = 12
3 defensive lines of 2 = 6
2 goaltenders = 2
3 reserve players on the taxi squad

The Russian name generator (http://www.thirdgeek.com/2006/names/RU/) that I just added (based on the Wikipedia article ru:Знаменитые_русские (http://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/Знаменитые_русские)) should be close to Russian names. Of course, I can’t actually read that article, so I could be wrong. :p

I don't see why not... It's not without precedent. There was once (I can't remember whether it was the Olympics or the World Athletics Championships) when Afghanistan took part in the Opening Ceremony but didn't field any athletes.

Also, LE has created an NS wiki list of participating nations (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/List_of_nations_participating_at_the_First_Winter_Olympics), which is now complete. There 95 nations listed. If any of you have been forgotten, feel free to add yourselves. Feel free also to edit it to add your sports' code, the name of your NOC, and/or a link to the article on your nation's participation in the Games.

I signed up a while ago but didn't post specifically in this thread. I posted in the first one discussing the starting of the Olympic Games, but not this one (Mostly because I didn't notice it until now). Does this make me in or out? I'm not on the list in the RP thread, but I am on LE's NSWiki list.
