Im not a hardcore WH 40k reader, I have a good friend who have told me of the world and I like it, thought I more or less copy it to my nation. Tho in a smaller scale ofc. And yes, I will have space marines, and it will be the book-type once so you wont find legions of them.
I find geographical descriptions sort of useless but a rough idea in my head is:
Medium sized landmass completly covered with a city (hive). It has seaboarders and a large mountain located nearby. There is no "nature" to speak of.
Danneland is Refered to as simply "The Empire" by its natives and "The Hive" for the rest of the world.
The Hive itselfe is like a gigantic spire reaching all the way to space.
The city is devided by levels, the further up you get the richer, and the more power you will find. And the more control, police and military activity.
The mid levels are commercial and service sectors with residential areas.
Lower levels contain of the "working class".
And the lowest levels harbour criminals, outlaws, homeless people and such. Its dirty, rough and unpleasant.
And at the bottom all the waste goes while it waits to be recycled to various things (tho the ammount of waste produced compared to what is recycled its an ever growing mountain of garbage)
Society.
The highest in command is the emperor, who is believed to be some form of a god. And even tho people refer to him as the emperor, they think of him as god.
However, The Emperor himselfe has not been seen in flesh and blood for a very long time.
And in his place 12 Men representing various parts of The Empires structure (such as military, commercial, social, religious and so on) rule.
The Church, also known as "The Inquisition" have a very strong place in the empire. Always on the hunt for witches and signs of chaos.
The rich and the famous of the empire live like hollywood stars on the top levels. Care little for the rest of mankind and only see to themselves and their wealth. Both goverment funded and private security patrol and monitor the higher levels. Hiding intelligence on those levels are both expensive and hard.
The middleclass strive to increase their status and wealth while they care for one another. Its a very suburbian attitude with neighbourhoods joining up in various activities.
Police activity is high and tight.
The lower class are a grey mass of people stuck in their possitions and can hardly do anything about it. They work in the gigantic factories 10-14 hours a day. Their only joy is the television and the social life. Every day is a struggle.
Police activity is medium.
The lowest levels, the number of people living in the lowest levels are unknown. It could be millions, or 100 millions. No one knows, and no one cares.
The police only go here if they have a direct order to venture down.
And when they go down they are ruthless and care little for those who live there.
Death is something you deal with on a daliy basis, crime, drugs, all the things that are unwanted on all the other levels are here.
Its not a place you want to live, but it might be the only place if you have no other place to go.
History:
During the great war (duh! :P) "The Hive" was under heavy attack from chaos forces and a powerfull witch threw a strange form of spell and after it was cast, chaos forces dissapeared.
The Hive lost contact with the empire and what they believe to be terra. And found themselves on a rebelling planet with strange creatures, magic and other nations with other intrests.
The Hive quickly decided to apply the model they knew to be true and 12 men were apointed to rule.
Military:
The military is devided in the usual army, marines, airforce, navy and refered to as IG (Imperial Guard). IGA Imperial Guard Army, IGM marines IGAF airforce and IGN navy.
The army is huge, always on alert and highly equiped.
Space Marines.
Space Marines are biological manufatured Super Soldiers, lightning reflexes and imense power. They are the best of the best and equiped with powerfull Power Armours that can withstand allmost everything. Along with various arms such as Bolters, Heavy Bolters, Meltaguns and so on it makes them more then deadly, they are feared.
They will most likely beat your best soldiers.
But calm down now, Theres only 50 of them along with two librarians.
(and im not looking for a big fight anyways so it really dosent matter, and they dont deal in the mortals issues. They have bigger fish to fry).
Librarian:
A powerfull psycher in a powerarmour.
The Inquisition:
aka. The Church are always looking for an answer to what happend and how they ended up on this planet. And they are always looking for witches (illegal psychers) and any sign of chaos. It acts more of a CIA than a church.
The church believes in the emperor.
Chaos:
The Hive, The Empires greatest fear is Chaos.
Roughly explained Chaos is creatures straight from hell (the warp) in our reality. Daemons only wanting death and suffering.
And a weak psycher is their portal into the mortal world and therefore they must be hunted down and killed.
Entire levels in the hive will be exterminated if theres even rumours of chaos.
The Inquisition will deny the existance of chaos.

Cant come to think of anything else at the moment, I guess an IC post is in its place pretty soon but im to tired (and have no ideas at the moment) to come up with anything atm.
I was a regular rp'er back in the day but I dont think anyone of the old guys/gals remember me anyhows :)
All of the above is IC info and commonly known by everyone exept the chaos part. Officially The Inquisition is the hand of god. And the existance of Space marines are only legends and tales among the people.
