Out of Nothingness Comes...

Wilhelmsborough

Stretched out across the lands was a great thick fog. It was the kind of fog that only comes once in a lifetime. A fog that masks everything within its grey cover. It was a fog that covered everything-the lakes, the hills, the trees-within its awesome obscuring mist.

The Prince looked out upon these misty lands from the balcony in his tower. He frowned. Is this what I rule over? He thought. This mist, is this mist what I rule over? It's the only thing that can be seen at all for as far as I can see. It's as if there is nothing else that is there except fog. Am I destined to rule over fog?

He leaned forward and rested his arms on the balcony and stared out into the vast expense of grey. If this is what I have worked to aquire, he thought, then I am quite disappointed.

Suddenly, through the grey nothingness, the Prince saw something, and immediatly stood up straight. He looked closely at the object.

And he smiled. Let there be light, he thought to himself.

From out of the sky came a bright yellow light that tore through the dark grey wall. The Prince winced slightly. His eyes had been accustomed to the lighting of the fog for so long that he wasn't prepared for such intensity as that of the light of the sun.

As the sun tore holes though the cloudy skies, the fog began to lose its grip upon the land. As the Prince watched in awe, the mists retreated from their seige of the Palace walls, exposing pathways, stone walls, and trees. Far off in the distance, hills and mountains appeared, as did rivers, lakes and streams.

The fog cover retreated faster and faster like a defeated army running for its life. Vast expanses of forest could be seen. Birds flew from their trees joyful that they could see where they were flying.

But the thing that the Prince was interested in the most came last as the fog exposed areas of civilization. Villages, towns cities. All full of people, industry, and wealth. Of this, the Prince's smile broke out into a full grin. These communities with their people and wealth were his and his alone to rule.

Finally, the fog lifted completely from the land and the sun shined down upon the Sovereign Principality of Wilhelmsborough. Prince William the First looked out upon his lands. Then there came a fluttering sound behind him. Prince William turned and saw that the noise was coming from the national flag waving in the wind.

William looked upon the flag, feelings of pride stirring inside him. The design was quite plain. Upon a white background, there was an arm wielding a sword that looked as if it were coming out of the bottom of the flag.

It was a very simple design, but Prince William did not mind at all. He was very proud of that flag, for it represented all that the Principality stood for: On one hand it represented humble behavior. But on the other hand, it also stood for the strength of the common man, and their utter refusal to be dominated by a tyrant.

That is what was meant by the sword-wielding arm coming out of the bottom of the flag. The common people were more or less at the bottom of the societal ladder. But if they became mad, one could be sure that they would take up arms against those who oppressed them and then rise up from below to take down those who were above them.

Of course, as one could plainly tell, Prince William the First was at the top of society, so in the event of an uprising by the commoners, there would be a chance that his life would be threatened. But the young Prince was not worried. Though he was upper-class and very wealthy, William felt that he understood the wants and desires of the common man. And he was all the more happier to help them.

William turned back to look out upon the vast expanses of his nation and his heart leapt at the sheer beauty of it all. From emerald hills to snow-capped mountains, the Principality of Wilhelmsborough was a thing of beauty.

At that moment, Prince William made a promise to himself. He would attempt to preserve the beauty of the landscape as best as he possibly could. He would also give his citizenry the highest standards of living possible, along with plenty of personal liberties and freedoms.

He swore that his country would be recognized as a beacon of worker's rights, environmental protection, and safety. Above all else, Prince William swore that he would protect the safety of his people, as well as the whole of the Principality from harm, whether it come from the outside or within. It may be a challenge, but the liviehood of millions were counting on it. And Prince William was up for that challenge.

He gave his country one last look before he walk before he went back inside the tower. Although he could have looked out upon his nation all day, Prince William knew that there were more important issues at hand than looking at a nation. Running that nation now, that was the important part.
