Most people have heard of SETI, a group of scientists hoping to pick up communication from other intelligent species. They've usually piggybacked on to other, more mainstream astronomical studies. The idea I'm proposing is simple:

what if they found something? Incontrovertible evidence of extraterrestrial intelligence. The RP going on would be the reactions in various nations, governments, religions, and so on.

Please note that I'd prefer a modern-technology approach: the aliens aren't landing. They've just beamed out a message, and we've picked it up with a radio telescope or something.

The governments would debate whether or not to hide it, maybe some Men in Black style agency would be set up, or it could end up not being ET life at all. Many options....

I like the idea of debating whether to hide it. Plus, it could very well be not extraterrestrial-or at least debated as such. If you've heard the story of SETI and the pulsars, you'll know that false alarms are very easy.

So, perhaps Cagamos, New Mass, and Mahria have some kind of joint university thing? All our various departments working together on a mainstream observation, that turns up something peculiar...

I did a thread a while ago where a scientist of mine actually DID contact an alien species, but I didn't finish it. My government wouldn't hide its discovery, however.

I like that as a starting storyline, and yes I actually was thinking about pulsars and Gamma ray bursts. Just how much contact are we talking about, like a conversation or just "hello", but hey I think it will work either way

I think we all should start with something new, just because of the confusion.
