"We're ba-ack To kick your ass-es!" shout Dwarves

Does being the only nation in the History to win the Don Cherry Cup four times hang a heavy burden on our Dwarven sport heroes? Of course not, they're used to having to live up to the deeds of old, its only natural.

Haztarr returns to coach his team once more the the Title, along with his Captain and Star-Winger Thorin Nibin, the ever-fragrant transsexual Thyria (formerly Thror) Honnhirrim, fattest goalie ever Grimcrag Torinzahar and a whole host of characters just waiting to be explored.

Iansisle
10-01-2006, 00:53
The once beautiful white, blue and orange Gulls jersey had been stained an ugly black and green by its long exposure to Langdone's dark magic. But aesthetics couldn't have been farther from the captain of the Iansislean national side: he had a legacy to renew. Back in the early days of the tournament, Iansisle had been a dominant team, peaking by taking home Don Cherry's Cup in the seventh playing. However, the all stars from that team had retired, one by one, and quietly shuffled off this mortal coil. The Gulls fell from one of the most prominent teams to one of the most obscure.

But no more! thought Langdone, looking over his newly tested and refined squad. Last Cherry Cup they had been rushed, with still quite a few bugs to work out, although his risen abominations proved much more effective than the group of living scrubs which had previously competed.

His skates blighting the ice below them as he crossed the rink for one final review, Langdone called out to his team.

“Where do we go?”

“Krytenia!” replied the fell constructs

“And what will we do there?” shouted Langdone.

“FEAST ON DWARF-BRAIN!” bellowed the undead Gulls, their voices raising into a howl that made skin crawl in tiny village which stood in the shadow of Langdone’s castle.

There will indeed be a dark victory in this cup thought Langdone as his army trooped off to Krytenia, dark clouds preceding their march. But first I have something else to settle!

Mau Slurp’s House of Gambling
Tanah Burung

The world’s greatest gambling mogul was just settling in for the night when an impossibly long and thin figure stepped out of the shadows. Before Slurp could say anything, Langdone had cast a curse of silence on him.

“I have heard that you are having trouble collecting the entire GNP of Iansisle,” Langdone said, his voice like dry leaves blowing in the wind. EVIL dry leaves. “Which is why I have come with a proposal -- if the Gulls fail to win the Cherry Cup, I will personally insure that payment is made forthwith and instruct you in the ways of necromancy so that no deadbeats ever evade you again.

“However, if the Gulls do win, not only shall you pay a sum equivalent to the entire GNP of Iansisle to me, but I shall have your immortal soul with which to enhance my undead minions. Well!? What say you to double or nothing?”

And then Langdone lifted his curse so Mau Slurp could reply.

The Apologetic Kittens coach (Named Nurse, for reasons known only to his parents) is sitting in his office, reading the team sheets for the other nations. Opposite him, his assistant (Name not important) sits, merely looking worried.

"So, we're supposed to have one of these, yeah?"

"Um, yes Nurse. Well, not we, you. You were supposed to produce one. The best players in the country."

"And I haven't?"

"Seems that way, sir"

"Right. Well....It's hockey, who won our hockey league? We'll send them"

"We don't have one"

"Don't have what?"

"Um, a hockey league. Most people don't even know what hockey is."

"Oh." He looks blank. "That's not good then, I take it?"

"Not good at all"

"Just round up the first people you can find who understand the game, I'll sort out some equipment."

"Yes, sir." He stands, before looking back at Nurse. "You do know what equipment they'll need, I take it?"

"Of course I do, man. But you can deal with that, too."

How do these Iansislers keep making it past the customs checks? Mau Slurp wondered as he tried to clear the cobwebs from his mind. And why always with such shocking abuses of the laws of hospitality? There should have been a tea course, pastries, and polite chit-chat for at least 30 minutes before anyone mentioned money. Savages!

"Well, my pale friend, that debt -- and by the way, you owed us twice the entire GNP of Iansisle -- has been transferred for a satisfactory payment to a madwoman from Greenland," Mau Slurp replied at last. "Normally confidentiality would preclude me from naming the party in question, but since she has gone public with it i suppose i can make an exception. She now styles herself Queen Susan of Kalaallit Nunaat, Iansisle and Her Other Dependencies. In fact i believe my government no longer recognizes the current usurping regime in your country. From the point of view of the House of Gambling, anyway, you're an absconding subject of Queen Susan and must be reported to her."

He pressed a silent alarm button. No doubt the sorcerer would escape, but it might be fun to watch a group of crazed Inuit try to arrest him. Mau Slurp always enjoyed international incidents. Plenty of money to be made betting on the winner.

"In the meantime, of course, i'm happy to make a new bet. If Iansisle wins the Cherry Cup, you may have title to the House of Gambling assets, which are currently rather, er, substantial. I'll even toss in the eternal soul of, oh, let's say my wife. If you lose, then your government transfers title over the colony of Gallaga to the House of Gambling. I've always wanted to run the world's largest open-air casino, and maybe train some lemurs to spin the roulette wheels. What do you say?"

In Krytenia, coaches were gathering for the press conference that was about to start. Flashbulbs were going off as the coach sat down and questions were already flying.

Coach General Thompson nodded to the person handling the computer and he cleared his throat.

"May I have your attention please?" he asked and the press quieted down.

"After a few tormentus cups, we have decided to shake up our roster. We have a list of new names that we will present to you today. With me is General Montgomery who is our Goalie coach and he will introduce the goalies. General?"

"Thank you sir. As General Thompson said, I am Major General Montomery and I am the goalie coach. Our starting goalie will be #1 Captain Robert Barber. He is from the 3rd ID of the 3rd Army. He has tremendus leadership ability and is strong on defense.

Our back up goali is #17 1st Lt. Brian Wilson. He is from our elite special forces unit and graduated at the top of class from the academy. He is ruthless and lets nothing stand in his way of total victory.

These 2 goalies make up the core of our defensives barriers to keep the enemy from scoring goals. General Thompson? I yield the floor back to you sir."

"Thank you General Montgomery. We will now move on to our defensivemen. Brigadier General Travis Anderson is our defense coach and he will announce our defensivemen. General?"

"Thank you sir. Afternoon ladies and gents. I am Brigadier General Travis Anderson and I am the defensemen coach. We have a group of talented defensemen that we are going to introduce to you today.

"Our first line defensemen is #5 Kevin Snow and #3 Peter Mitchell. Kevin Snow is Sargeant and attached to the 5th Army's 14th regiment as a gunner. He knows his duty and can feel what his opponets is going to do next. An asset for a defensemen. Peter Mitchell is fresh out of the academy and graduated near the top of class. He mastered in command mobile tactics and was a sniper on the academy's shooting team. Aggressive teams are going to be hard pressed to get away from him because once he has you lined up, he never misses.

"Our 2nd line defensemen is #4 George Davidson and #11 Jason Kendel. George Davidson is a specialist in the Army. He helps run a counter artilary batter with 8th Army out of the Stovakor system. He knows where to place his barrage and when he lets loose, I pity those on the receiving end. Mr. Kendel is a unique soldier from Northhampton. He attended a different acadamy than the rest and is probably one of our best players.

"Our 3rd line defensemen is #21 Fredrick Parker and #22 Lawrence Williams. Fred Parker is Staff Sargent in the Space Forces. He's part of our military space traffic control and keeps an eye out for security threats. When he identifies a threat, he calls the threat board and it is taken care of. Mr. Williams is sargent in the Space Forces. He serves along side Staff Sargent Parker as part of a team.

"Our Checking line Will be made up of Kevin Snow and Fredrick Parker. These two represent our defensive capabilities and will propel this line to be the best line in this Cherry Cup.

"The Powerplay and Penalty kill defensemen will be mixed and will not be announced ahead of time. General Thompson, i give the floor back over to you sir."

"Thank you General Anderson. Our last coach we'll hear from is our forward/center coach, General Michael Alexander. General Alexander, the floor is yours."

"Thank you sir. As General Thompson said, i run the forwards and the centers. I'm not going to go into detail about our linemen because it really is inconsequential. I will say this and this goes for all of them that they are special and do not answer to the current chain of command.

"Our 1st line forwards and center is as follows. At Right Wing is A captain in the Navy, on detached duty, Captain Robert Winston. At Center, is Lt. Col. David Carson. At Left Wing will be Brian McCarthy.

"Our 2nd Line is as follows. At Right Wing will be Captain Nathan Bradford. At Center will be Lt. Commander Bradly Roger and at left wing will be Col. Henry Jones.

"Our 3rd Line is as follows. At Right Wing is Col. Donald Howser, at Center will be Col Roger Heinz and at Left Wing will be Captain Lance Nichols.

"Our Checking line will be made up of Winston, Heinz, and Roger. General Thompson, that is all I have."

"Thank you Alexander. The rest of the roster will be released tomorrow. That concludes this press conference."

When the press conference was over, they all stood up amid the flashbulbs and left the conference room.

We have considered adding some carboard cutouts of hockey stars such as Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier, Brett Hull and Dominik Hasek, but do to afew metaphysical time space related concerns, we aren't sure whether or not those players exist in this world, so Petr will be alone until Squornshelan Philosophers can sort this one out.

And here, later than planned, is the draw for the Eighteenth Cherry Cup, held in Avidia's sumptuous Guildhall.

The teams have been ranked based on comparitive performances in the previous two Cherry Cups, which has bizarrely given Liverpool England the coveted #1 spot. The thirty-six nations have been put in six conferences of six, each team playing the others in their conference twice, with the top two teams from each conference qualifying for round two. The two third-placed teams with the best records will also qualify, with the other four playing a single-elimination "repechage" round to decide the final two teams.

Without further ado, here are the groups:

CENTRAL CONFERENCE: Playing at: National Indoor Stadium (NIS), Everton City and The Icehouse, Avidia
Squornshelous
Chicanada
The Gulf States
Lovisa
Krytenia
Kericia

Still sat behind his desk, Nurse is currently looking over the group draw. An assistant, different from before (One can only speculate as to the terms of the previous assistants dismissal), sits opposite.

Having clearly thought long about the issue, he begins to speak.

"So we're not going to qualify, then?"

"It is the Cherry Cup, sir, we've seen upsets in the past."

"Yes, but we're against Starblaydia. I don't really know anything about them, but they seem to win this thing an awful lot."

"The record is impressive, as is Vilitas, but..."

"So that's two teams we don't stand a chance against. And what about these lads that were rounded up. They're awful." Gesturing to a dubious bunch of men huddled in the corner, all of whom are currently trying to not be there. One of which, being about 8 foot tall and not made of flesh, was having a more difficult time of it than the others. "And that one, is he even a lad? Looks more like some kind of brick with legs and arms."

"I have obtained a certificate which says, officially, that he is a 'lad' for the duration of this tournament."

"Well, that's good enough for me. Can he skate better than the rest of 'em?"

"Ah, well, no. He more, sort of, walks."

"So, despite it being the Cherry Cup, we ARE definitely going to fail miserably."

"It would seem that way, sir."

Hmmm.....Since ASMV has NEVER had a hockey team before, we have no clue how the Ice Dragons will perform. Expect complete humiliation against Starblaydia and as for the rest..............Who the hell knows???

That being said, the Ice Dragons themselves fully expect to will this group fairly easily..........At least that is what our sources are telling us.

"Southeast?"

"Yep."

Rob Redmond and Mohamed al-Din, two members of the Habs, were having a couple drinks before the plane to Krytenia.

"Southeast of what?"

"Beats hell out of me."

"I though we were in the Northwest."

"Of our region, yeah, but maybe we're southeast of them."

"I wouldn't know much about that, I got an F- in Geography."

"So is everyone else in that group southeast as well?"

"Maybe."

Redmond paged through the reports again.

"Starblaydia?"

"Yeah."

"Isn't that, like, football?"

"No, we get to play them at football, and then again at hockey."

"Lucky us."

"Yeah."

"Anyone else on that list ring a bell?"

"Androssa se Mire Whatsis...weren't they those bubblegum guys?"

"Maybe."

"Fancy that."

They paid their tab and got on the plane for Krytenia.

The teams have been ranked based on comparitive performances in the previous two Cherry Cups, which has bizarrely given Liverpool England the coveted #1 spot.

ooc: I'm not at all sure it's coveted. Being ranked, sorry, ranbked, number one made me finish almost last.

And now, SportsBreak, brought to you by Stout Lout Ales.

The following comments were offered by some guy off the street who we hired because we're too cheap to pay a real sportscaster who would make the effort to check past threads. He said his name is Don.

Tanah Burung: "Those bums? They always lose! Hey Martina, are the steriods making your ass that fat?"
Oliverry: "What? Aren't we supposed to avoid former finalists in the first round? Who did these rankbings anyway? Bastards! Commies! Tabernac!"
Formal Dances: "Fergin' figure skaters. Who invited them?"
Iansisle: "Hey, we kicked your ass in CC1! And, like a buncha times since then. Our ungainly bird can kick your ungainly bird's ass! Plus you owe us money! Jerks."
Euroslavia: "Didn't we just beat them last Cup? Damn, maybe they'll want revenge. Ha, like i care, those chiecken Swedes. Careful, don't say anything mean about Phantoms, it only riles them up. Shh! What?"
Hiiraan: "Too many vowels! Get lost! Your beer sucks! What? Whaddyaa mean i'm drunk. No way dude, come over here and say that!"

Don falls off armchair and drowns in own vomit. Mourned by none.

Israelis slow out of the gate

The Milchama Israelis were a little slow coming out of the gate today. A poor performance by them against Bettia saw them lose 6-1. Coach Jean Perron said, "I would have liked to have a better start than this but there is only so much you can do. Coming into the third period it was only 2-1 but after that our guys just did not have the energy to continue to play. Next tournament I plan on having more than just Israelis to give some more depth to this hockey team."

Because we don't care about the Bettian nor who scored nor when exactly we will tell you only about the lone Milchamian goal. It came only 3 minutes when Birbauer found Eisenmann on the right wing. Eisenmann then shot the puck and it was initially saved by the Bettian keeper but the rebound by Eisenmann went top shelf and in to make it 1-0 Milchama. It all went downhill from there as the Bettians tied it two minutes later. Then scored one more time before the end of the period.

Finghulero nets PP goal as Pacitalia downs rival Fmjphoenix

WROXHAM, KRYTENIA (PSN) -- Pacitalia's first-ever international ice hockey match ended a success Monday afternoon. Antonio Finghulero scored on the power-play early and Rano Dovungamo added a second as the Pacitalians downed one of their biggest sports rivals, Fmjphoenix, in a 2-0 contest.

Pacitalia seemed destined for a loss in their introduction to international competition in this sport, when the team ended up in a 5-on-3 against a dominating Fmjphoenix team. However, six fantastic blocker and pad saves by starting goalie Roberto Fedomino in a span of just 38 seconds helped the team out of the disadvantage and back to even strength.

The Pacitalians capitalised on a power-play of their own, as Finghulero helped work the puck around the boards. Linemates Valentino Sandruvali and Chimano Tussoli, and defencemen Piero Zutta and Ferdinando Dali, touched the puck before Sandruvali fired the puck through the crease and onto the stick of Finghulero, who knocked it past the sprawling Fmjphoenician goaltender. Finghulero's goal came at 7:39 of the second period and will go down as Pacitalia's first-ever international ice hockey goal.

Pacitalia's second goal came from Pacitalia's powerful fourth line. After a glass-shattering hit by Timo "The Bear" Ursanti on a Fmjphoenician third-line forward, the puck squirted out to Dovungamo, who, despite his weight, managed to outskate two bewildered Fmjphoenician defencemen and flick the puck over the right shoulder of Fmjphoenix's goalie, just as he passed the crease.

Pacitalia's first game in international ice hockey competition goes down a success, not long after Pacitalia's first Ligura Hockey di Pacitalia season had been deemed a huge success. Most of Pacitalia's national team players come from the LHP teams, though six of the roster play for teams in the Oliverrian league.

"We moved the puck around well," captain Niccolo Brega said after. "It's great to come out swinging like that; a win really helps our confidence."

An announced crowd of 18,818 was evenly split between fans of either side.

Blizzard win first match after layoff

Perhaps the Sarzonian national hockey club should keep skipping Cherry Cups. Two tournaments have intervened between the Blizzards' last meaningful hockey game, a 2-1 loss to Starblaydia in the championship game of Cherry Cup XV and their opening match of Cherry Cup XVIII. Harold Clark's charges looked for all the world like a team that didn't miss a beat, rolling to a 5-2 win over Schiavonia behind a two goal, two assist game from Alex Ovechkin.

"Alex is just amazing out there," Coach Harold Clark said. "He's a singular talent offensively and defensively. He plays a whole lot older than his age, that's for sure."

Ovechkin got the Blizzards (1-0-0) off to a strong start in the first period, which had been a trouble spot for the Blizzards during their exhibition season. He scored one breathtaking goal with a wrist shot after being shielded from the puck by a Schiavonian defensemen and fired a blazing slap shot on the power play that put Sarzonia up 3-0.

From there, goaltender David Snow made the lead hold up with 28 saves, most of them of the spectacular variety. Snow even leveled a Schiavonian forward on the forecheck midway through the second period. His check drew a penalty on the Schiavonians, which Sean Anderson converted into Sarzonia's second power play goal of the game.

"Our power play was scoreless through the exhibition season (0 for 22), so we had a little pressure on us in the back of our minds to convert here," Anderson said. "We just had to keep in mind that we were due." The Blizzards were 2 for 4 on the power play.

"We've got a tough game against Bettia coming up," Clark said. "This is a good way for us to get started."

Ice Dragons Lose in Debut

For the first time ever, ASMV put a hockey team on the ice in either a domestic or international role. The result was quite forseeable. 3-1 loss (hmm....same score the Sea Dragons lost by) to Apologetic Kittens whose apologies seemed much more like gloating after the game had ended.

The big news here. WE ACTUALLY SCORED!!!! Sorry got a bit carried away there.............

Don't get too used to that happening. Starblaydia is up next. Could more resemble a gridiron score when all said and done.

Prediction: Starblaydia 21 ASMV 0. I hope we can keep it that close :)

Petr Beats Up on The Gulf States

The lone Squornshelous Ferret playing in this cup scored a hat trick in last nights defeat of The Gulf States. Despite being all alone on the ice, he was able to notch three goals while only allowing one. If Squornshelous performs well, Petr is sure to win all sorts of awards, and will obviously win the team mvp. While we are happy with our win, it is worrying that not every team we play will be able to hit the post with such regularity, so a program has begun to train a dozen or so kangaroos to play ice hockey. They should be ready in time for the 4th or 5th game of the tournament.

It was not a good outlook for the continued domination of Iansisle over Gallaga. Euroslavia -- who has always been an annoying thorn-in-the-side but never quite a hated rival -- bested the Gulls by a score of four to three.

Needless to say, Ashlee Langdone (previously quite flushed both with the good bet he had made and the near escape from the Greenlandic gestapo) was absolutely furious. Body parts were flung about helter-skelter as he lashed out at his fallen servants. He'd just have to sew them back on later, of course, but it was quite a good release for the rage he was feeling.

"Now listen," he growled, pulling star wingman (who happened to be missing a leg) Martin St Amour's face right up to his own, "I don't need to tell you how vital it is that we don't lose this Cherry Cup."

St Amour's reply was a nonsensical series of hisses and grunts.

"Well, yes, losing Gallaga might not be in our best interest, but I'm talking about pride, you fool! Just think about how much those damned dwarves and that wretched inuit usurper will laugh should we fail to win! We must defeat Tanah Burung"

With a smile, Langdone added: "I have already dealt with Euroslavia, of course. I put a curse on their entire tomato crop -- they shall be over-ripe and flavorless before the farmers can do anything about it. Come, servants, join me in a manical laugh!"

"That was just the players. We're not at home now, and these people over here seem to encourage it."

"Really? You don't say." He pauses for a second before reaching for the phone. "What would the number for the Vilitan team be?"

"We didn't play the Vilitan team, we played the Ice Dragons."

"Oh yes, yes. I remember now. We beat them, didn't we?"

Bettia Milc-hammer Milchama

Bettia 6 (Thruxton 5 47 54, Canton 17, Beckton 46, Anwar 58)
Milchama 1 (Eisenmann 3)
(Ice Mountain, Monthuez)

Bettia opened their latest Cherry Cup campaign here in Krytenia with a crushing victory over AO rivals Milchama. However, it took an early goal from Milchama right-wingman Alon Eisenmann to wake them up, his initial shot being well-saved by Dafydd Clayton before he pounced on the rebound.

To Bettia's credit, Milchama's advantage lasted less than two minutes thanks to a sterling effort by Butetown's Ikrima Thruxton, who fought his way past two defencemen before slipping the puck past goaltender Gussin to equalise. The Iceberg-Dragon-type-things, roared on by around 3000 Bettian fans who made the short journey, were heartened by this and stepped up a few more gears, claiming the majority of possession during the rest of the first period. Their pressure paid off after 17 minutes as Phil Canton blasted home from the restart after Spivak was penalised for icing.

The second period was far more even, with both sides cancelling each other out with creating much in the way of goalscoring opportunities.

On the other hand, the third period was one of total Bettian domination. Chris Beckton scored Bettia's third six minutes in, poking the puck home in a goalmouth scramble after Thruxton's goalbound effort was saved. A minute later, Thruxton made it four as he slid the puck under the goaltender despite the close attentions of Ariel Tal.

Goal number five came in the 54th minute with Ikrima Thruxton claiming a deserved hattrick, and just four minutes later Jason Anwar completed the rout.

Bettia must now weather the Blizzards blowing into New Osteria. Sarzonia will be brimming with confidence after an impressive 5-2 win against Schiavonia, and the Bettian faithful will hoping for another top-class display from their ice-bound heroes.

Rob Redmond and Mohamed al-Din had just finished losing 4-2 to Starblaydia in Ouesvale Borough, and are now trying to piece together some kind of meaning from this.

"We lost."

"Yep."

Needless to say, vodka was involved.

"Why?"

"They scored more goals then we did?"

"Really?"

"Yep."

Redmond also had a really good hookup from his frat days who hadn't lost any of his magic in the hash department.

"This place looks familiar."

"Weren't you here sometime before?"

"Huh."

"Well?"

"Oh yeah, way back when, I came here. Football."

"This is the Cherry Cup."

"There was football here earlier. And I went there and watched the Paladins lose. And tomorrow we get to loaf around here before the match and watch them play Starblaydia."

"Think they'll lose?"

"Beats me."

"These bedsheets are shiny."

"Yeah, they're satin."

"HOLY F***ING COW THE DEVIL HAS POSSESSED MY BEDCLOTHES!"

They'd been at it for a while now.

"No, dude, it's a kind of fabric. Like, really fancy."

"Why'd they let us near it then?"

"They said they were out of cotton or whatever so they were giving us the sheets from the honeymoon thingie since noone was using it."

"Honeymoon?"

"Yeah."

"Did I just get married?"

"No, you just played hockey."

"Dang. Did I win?"

"Nope."

"Did I score?"

"Nope."

"How could I not score on my honeymoon?"

"This isn't your honeymoon, those are just sheets from someone else's honeymoon thingie."

"I hope they're clean."

"I'm sure they washed them."

"Is that what they do on honeymoon here in Krytenia?"

"What?"

"Do they, like, wash each other's sheets when they're on honeymoon here in Krytenia?"

"Whatever floats their boat, I guess."

Blizzards left cold, 4-2

Even though the Sarzonian national hockey club should have no rights to complain about a game that was closer even than the 4-2 result to Bettia would suggest, Coach Howard Clark and several Blizzards players were left fuming over a penalty shot call that put Bettia on top with what turned out to be the winning goal before the Blizzards rallied to turn a potential laugher into a nail-biter. But the final score still read 4-2 to Bettia.

"I can't say what I really want to say," Clark said in his new conference after the match. "I don't want to get fined. I will say that Cherry Cup officials will be hearing it from me after I get done with those guys in there," he said, pointing at the locker room.

Clark had a busy night in front of him even after the game ended. He could start with his Blizzards players, who conceded three goals in the first 30 minutes of the game before ending the second intermission down 3-2. He could start with David Snow, whom he pulled 32 minutes into the game. He could even start with the Krytenian referee, who called a penalty shot even though "[left wing] Alex [Ovechkin] was lurking in front" of the Bettian forward being pulled down by a Sarzonian defenceman.

"I don't know what he was seeing," one Blizzards player said on condition of anonymity because he didn't want to be fined. "He didn't have a clear shot at the goal because [Ovechkin] was bearing down on him. But we should have never been in that position anyway."

The player wouldn't say it, but Clark said, "if Snow makes the save there, we're probably not talking about that call right now. He's going to have to get a lot better between now and our next game."

"Tell [Clark] to try saving a penalty shot sometime," Snow said. "And tell the defence not to leave me or Alex out to dry."

Arguments notwithstanding, Sarzonia (1-1-0, three points) sit in second place in the Eastern Conference due to favourable goal differential. They face third seeded Milchama, known in Sarzonia for a baseball team that is widely considered the Sarzonian team's biggest rivals and for the longest newspaper names on the planet. The Milchaman team is currently in last place in the conference with an 0-2-0 record, scoring three goals and giving up nine. However, Clark was preaching caution.

"If we play like we did against Bettia, we're not going anywhere," he said. "We lost to a team we probably should have beaten, rankings be damned."
Pacitalia

No kidding! Pacitalia best team at CC after blowout win

The Pacitalian national men's ice hockey team is suddenly on top of the Cherry Cup their first time in. Antonio Finghulero notched his second and third goals of the tournament and the scoring line did the rest as Pacitalia downed McPsychoville in a blowout 6-0 game.

Pacitalia is apparently the best team (so far), based on statistics, although there are six other 2-0 teams in CC18. The Pacitalian squad is the only one that has not conceded a goal to date, and with eight goals scored they have the second best goal differential in the tournament (Oliverry has a +10 GD).

The contest against the McPsychoville squad got off to a quick start when Antonio Finghulero drew a hooking penalty against his opponent, who was clearly trying to prevent him getting back into a developing play deep in the offensive zone. Pacitalia went to the PP, where the effective two-way line worked the puck around until Piero Zutta found a waiting Finghulero's stick and watched the valuable forward redirect it into the net for an early Pacitalian lead at 2:49 of the first period.

Pacitalia saw seven power-plays in the first period as a frustrated McPsychoville team tried valiantly to contain the constant pressure from Pacitalia's top two lines. The home side capitalised on that seventh power-play as Finghulero broke through a crowd, deked the goalie and slid left, roofing it backhand over the confused netminder and giving the Pacitalian squad a solid two-goal lead at 19:22 of the first stanza.

The second period was no different from the first. McPsychoville gave up five straight power-play opportunities and Finghulero almost earned a natural hat trick when he fired a slapshot from the right side. Alas, it caromed off the post and to the corner, but on the same power-play Pacitalia's top line finally got on the scoreboard this Cup as Vincenti Labradorio fed Pado Castello, who punched it top right corner to give the Pacitalians their first commanding lead of the tourney, 3-0. That goal came at 4:40 of the second period.

Sixty seconds later, Castello returned the favour, feeding Labradorio for the Pacitalians' second breakaway of the game. He made no mistake, as he wrapped around behind the net, settled into the slot and flicked it five-hole past the McPsychoville netminder, chasing him after four goals on 22 shots. Pacitalia's 4-0 lead came just as the team was changing to its checking line. McPsychoville made the mistake of changing just as Castello fed Labradorio the saucer pass, and the fresh-legged defencemen only caught up right after the speedy left-winger Labradorio's shot left his stick.

Further insult to injury was to be had in the third period. Not ready to settle into a defensive mode just yet, the top line for the Pacitalians kicked in once again as Labradorio, Castello and centre Mario Bellimangelo moved in on an odd-man rush and pulled some sweet passing before Bellimangelo fired a superheated slapshot low between the blocker and the pad of the new McPsychoville goaltender, putting the home squad up 5-0 midway through the third period.

And if five goals wasn't enough, how about six -- Labradorio scored his second of the game and of the tourney into a yawning cage from a pass behind the net which bounced off the boards and onto the backside of Labradorio's stick before he took control and whipped it over the sprawling leg of the netminder for a 6-zip lead, which eventually became the final score.

Ice hockey aficionados in Pacitalia are growing further excited after this blowout win, and the 2-0 victory over traditional rivals Fmjphoenix. Time will tell whether this is just a fluke or another smidgeon of Pacitalian athleticism showing through. Congratulations to the men for their excellent result.

Ice Dragons Not Routed!!!

ASMV took the ice today against a Starbladi team most expected to easily dominate. That was not the case. And believe it or not, the Ice Dragons even grabbed the early lead in this one.

After the loss to Apologetic Kittens, ASMV knew they had to be very physical to even keep it close. That is what they did, too. That and set the Cherry Cup record for penalty minutes

[b]Nation surprised Kodiaks in Cherry Cup

Someone forgot to tell the Kodiaks about the Cherry Cup, wethinks.

Under all the hoopla from recently NSCL-ousted Astur City Reds replicating their sweep of the footy honors for 1932, the CHL-sponsored National Hockey team has actually been in the place that the Reds and Cana West wanted to make it.

And probably failing as well as the clubs would have.

The National side has played some horrible hockey in their 4-1 loss to Kericia followed by today's 3-1 smackdown by the Gulf States.

Considering the squad missed the Quaterfinals of CC17 by a few points to Vilita, the CHL figured the squad would be more than ready for the action this time around and make a run to the Finals. Instead, the team is being reshuffled to try and bring more speed. While this does mean a demotion to the third line of Captain Alex Phisher, National Coach Georghan Mallison hopes the switch can build up the action over the last four games.

You already know the scene by now.

"We won again?"

"Resoundingly, sir"

"Who in their right mind would lose to us?"

"Arctik, it would seem."

"But we're bloody useless."

"I think they had even less of a team than we did. I'm not fully sure they sent a proper team to the match."

"Neither did we, hehe"

"Very funny, sir. Though this leaves us top of the group."

"But I thought those other teams were going to beat us. I heard it with me own bleeding ears."

"We haven't played those ones yet, I'm sure they will."

"Bugger."

"Crap, we're doing well?"

Casari leads group after not much paying attention
Which means it's the perfect time to ruin that bit of luck

In shocking news, it appears the the Cherry Cup, Nationstates' premier international Ice Hockey Competition, has been going on with a Casaran team competing without anyone actually noticing.

"We're in the Cherry Cup again? I thought we gave up on that." One fan said, thinking deeply. "Well, either way, it's good to hear we're winning."

Seemingly, after a 3-2 win over the Lowland Clans, Casari is now a point clear after three games. Shocked that they're actually having some success, the several hundred Casaran Hockey fans have procured transport to Krytenia and hope to attend the final Casaran games.

"It's not fair to the team if we're not there, the half of us that aren't passed out drunk cheering them on." One fan said before getting on a flight to Krytenia.

Formal Dances has jumped off to a wonderful start in this Cherry Cup. With War still raging across the nation, this has brought cheers to those who are still at home wondering who is going to win the war.

In game 1, The Dancers danced to their first victory. In game 2 though, they suffered their first set back by losing to Oliverry 6-2. After this defeat, they turned right around and won game 3 4-2 over Iansisle.

The Dancers are hoping to make it to the playoffs and win their first ever cherry cup.

ASMV EARNS A POINT!!

Despite the fact that the Ice Dragons had never skated against a real team before this tourney - despite the fact that two previous games had both been losses - despite the fact that ASMV had only scored two goals in two games - and despite the fact that we basically suck at hockey, The Ice Dragons earned a point today against NMS and moved to 4th in the Southeast Conference as the final horn sounded in a 5-5 even game.

LW Buenda Miscinis became the first woman of the tourney to turn in a hat trick, with a goal in each period. Emile Grahle added a goal early in the 2nd. And Teoff Luserna added the final goal with just seconds left in regulation.

"Oh my gosh! This was like such a great game for us!" Exclaimed Miscinis following the game. "We like actually scored a bunch!"

That says it all. NMS let a valley girl keep them from running away with this one. Tune in next time to see if we can do it again.

"The score suggests it."

"Right, was it one of them teams we expected to beat us?"

"Yes. Vilita. Very good team, apparently."

"Right, but expected this, so it's alright?"

"Well, we're in third now. That means we won't qualify."

"And I can go 'ome and have a nice cuppa. Brilliant."

"That would be terrible, yes. Uhm, do you think we'll lose the next match too?"

"With this team? Without doubt."

Blizzards play to tie, keep hopes alive

After Sarzonia lost 4-2 to fellow Atlantian Oceania hockey players Bettia in the second game of the 18th Don Cherry Cup, the Blizzards were hoping to rebound against a Milchama team they had never faced in hockey prior to this Cup. Despite firing 54 shots, the Blizzards (1-1-1) could only get an Alex Ovechkin marker at 18:43 of the third period to salvage a 1-1 tie.

Coach Harold Clark said he couldn't fault the effort of the Blizzards, but "the execution was sorely lacking.

"We came out flat, real flat," he said. "We're damned lucky we weren't down 5-0 heading into the third period. We couldn't forecheck or backcheck. We kept drawing stupid penalties. We're thrilled to death to get one point out of this."

If Sarzonia is thrilled to get one point and hover in fourth place in the Eastern Conference, Milchama (0-2-1, one point) must be thrilled to earn their first standings point of the Cherry Cup. However, a source familiar with the team's thinking said they were disappointed they didn't earn a full three points for a victory.

"We totally outplayed the Blizzards," the source said. "They do not deserve to skate off with a tie." They may not deserve it, but they'll sure take it.

"Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good, I guess," goaltender David Snow (24 saves) said. "Championship teams need a little of both. If we want to be one, we're going to have to get a little blessing from Margaret. That is, if she follows hockey at all."

Inside: Nation screams at Bettia for horrid mispronunciation

Future looking bright. A win and draw last two games

The Milchama Israelis got off to a poor start in the Cherry Cup losing their first 3 matches. Since that poor start they have started to get better. The Israelis should have beaten Sarzonia but some bad luck with an Alexander Ovechkin early in the game was not overcome by the Israelis so they had to skate off with a 1 all tie.

According to coach Jean Perron this made the Israelis mad and they wanted some revenge. The revenge was taken out against East Lithuania today as the Israelis outplayed them from the first drop of the puck until the final whistle. The Israelis got a total of 42 shots and 82% possesion. They scored one goal a period with Eisenmann getting the first goal, Birbauer the second and Horowitz the third. The assists were made by Zamir, Eisenmann, Gussin, Frankel and Levy. Coach Jean Perron said, "This was out best game so far and now we will continue to go up the ladder and eventually maybe get out of last place." Clearly we he was optimistic.

Page 2:

Bettia mispronounces Milchamian name in newspaper report

The Bettia Aroras horrible misprounounced the sacred Milchamian name after their ice hockey game against the Israelis after CCMD1. Their newspaper said this, "Bettia Milc-hammer Milchama," this is clearly not how the Milchama as this is a English miscontruing of the word. Acting Prime Minister Eli Gohel said, "Milchama should either be pronounced in Hebrew where saying that headline is a poor use of grammar or not said at all. If Bettia or any other nation's press shows their poor knowledge of the Hebrew there will be great consequences." The Prime Minister's speech pretty sums up all the Milchamian's opinions on the issue. They hope it will be resolved soon.

The intrepid Ice Dragons entered the game today with no illusions of glory. The opponent - Vilita, In second place in the Southeast and far superior to the team from ASMV in every way imaginable.

Someone forgot to tell the teams that fact, as the Ice Dragons cruised to a 4-1 victory. LW Buenda Miscinis scored in the 1st and 3rd periods while Emile Grahle added 2 goals in the second period.

"I wouldn't rate a team that couldn't beat us."

"Indeed, I feel this draw may ruin their reputation. Though the dwarves are good at turning these things around."

"Well yes, sir."

"Do we have any dwarves on our team?"

Petr no Longer Alone

The Lone Squornshelan player in this Cherry Cup has been joined by some late additions to the roster. Just in time for the 5th game, 10 apes and monkeys from the Squornshelan national zoo have been trained to play a game which somewhat resembles ice hockey when viewed through a kaliedeoscope. Petr will no longer have to play every position and will stick to defense, his specialty. The goalkeeper spot will be filled by Ko Ko the gorilla, while Phil the chimpanzee will join Petr on the first defensive line. The starting forwards will be Maurice the chimp, Bo Bo the Rhesus Monkey and Bob the gibbon. The second line forwards will be Marcus the baboon, Kongo the chimp and Amerigo Vespucci the spider monkey. The second defenders will be Wendell the Gorilla and Xavier the chimp. Hopefully Petr can meld easily with his new teammates and continue the Ferret's undefeated run.

ASMV on Win Streak! How the he.....

The Ice Dragon thrashed Arctik today by a score of 6-3. It seems that the ASMV team, half of which learned to skate just weeks prior to this tourney, are finding a bit of luck on their side. (now if the WC squad could just find some.....sorry) Of the six goals scored, only four were from ASMV players. The other two were scored by the same Arctik defenseman who was removed from the game in the second period. Rumores filled the arena that he had been beheaded in the locker room, but those reports have yet to be confirmed.

This line shouldn't even be read...

"We're going to qualify?"

"Assuming we don't fall foul of two awful results, it looks likely."

"So it's not definite?"

"Oh no, not at all."

"Right. How's that dwarf?"

"Settling in quite nicely, and the tro..."

"We don't mention that word."

"The big man. He's getting on very well, wrecking other teams players."

"Very good. I can almost taste the bonus."

Petr Winning Again with Monkeys Benched

With the Ferrets first game involveing chimpanzees helping out Petr Krzldlwych ending in a 2-3 loss to Chicanada, all of the apes were benched for the next game, allowing Petr to go back to work on his own. This was after the monkeys failed to put one in on Chicanada, and putting all three of the goals against Squornshelous in themselves. Petr almost pulled it off, but fell one goal short of tieing it. The apes then sat out the next game against The Gulf States, and Squornshelous got by with a 1-0 victory.

A bruised and battered Ice dragon team limped to the locker room following the second game against Apologetic Kittens as 3-2 losers.

At least the game was close this time. But who the hell was that big guy? At least I think it was a guy. I swear he wasnt on that team last time around. I need to put the super assassin ninja on the ice to take care of that guy next time around.

Some of the bookies in our country aren't too happy about that.

Or the fact we (TGS) are doing so good in this tournament .... again. Everyone but the diehard fans figured we'd suck, but we're proving the world wrong until we get bounced in the playoffs.

Dovungamo has career-defining game in shutout win over McPsychoville

WROXHAM, KRYTENIA (PSN) -- The Pacitalian national men's ice hockey team continued its outstanding round-robin performance Sunday, downing McPsychoville 4-0 to maintain second place in the Southwestern Conference of this 18th Cherry Cup. Alternate captain Rano Dovungamo (fourth line, RW) had a hat trick and one assist as the newly-christened Ice Foxes improved to 5-1-1 to-date and maintained good chase on conference leading Hockey Canada.

"All of our lines are contributing equally," a cheery Dovungamo said post-match. "We are all playing off of each other's strengths and the momentum is really felt by everyone on the team, so it allows each and every player on the ice for our team to prosper and feed off the atmosphere. It is really a great experience to be out there on the ice and have nearly everyone cheering for you."

Dovungamo's first goal came three minutes into the game on a power play, as the McPsychoville defence, just like in their first meeting, crashed and burned early, allowing the Ice Foxes to capitalise. Linemates Timo Ursanti and Alberto Gritoni managed to poke the puck through with defencemen Ruggiero Chegomano and Linurio Etruscani pulling chase behind. The team set up an effective net-crashing formation, and while Gritoni's eventual shot was blocked by a McPsychoville defender, the rebound fell right to the blade of Dovungamo's stick, who wired the puck into the top right corner for a 1-0 lead.

The next goal came from Chegomano early in the second period, as he broke through on a 1-on-2, despite his duty to cover a flailing McPsychoville offensive drive. He quickly converted the opponent's odd-man rush into a 1-on-2 and broke past on a breakaway, deking right but then pushing left and dragging the puck into the back of the net as he skated round the back to celebrate giving the Ice Foxes a 2-0 lead.

Dovungamo's next goals came on other net-crash formations on the power-play and on the third goal he was promptly rewarded with a shower of Ice Fox hats and others, some bearing the Pacitalian flag, from the 18,882 fans assembled for the game in Wroxham. With the loss, McPsychoville is eliminated from a chance to advance to the playoff round, and Hockey Canada, which also won, is guaranteed at least a third-place finish. However, the Ice Foxes are keeping in step with the tough Hockey Canadians and will hope to exact some sort of revenge on them in the rematch. Pacitalia earned its only loss of the tournament from the undefeated Hockey Canadians, in a 2-0 contest.

HABS AVOIDING EMBARASSMENT - BARELY

Victory over Starblaydia lone bright spot in disheartening campaign

KRYTENIA - It's been a long, disheartening experience for the New Montreal Habs in the Southwestern Conference of the 18th Cherry Cup. For starters, nobody's quite figured out what we're southwest of. And going 2-2-4 hasn't helped anyone, either.

Beating Starblaydia 3-1 was an excellent morale booster for all concerned, of course, but that was our first win after five matches, making for a not-very-good start to the tourney. Another win over the Ice Dragons of Androssa Se Mire Whatsit was "encouraging," as was leaving last place for the first time this tourney, but the Paladins definetly have a ways to go before getting to the level where we can hope to beat Starblaydia on more than a fluke, or even the level at which we can hope to not get blanked 5-0 by Viltia, a place known more for it's jungles than ice rinks.

Ah well.

Ferrets Continue to Win

Monkeys to be Phased in gradually
Two of Petr Kryzldlwytzc's teammates suited up for last matchday's win over Kericia: Ko-Ko the gorilla played in goal, and Maurice the Chimpanzee played at forward, with Petr staying in a somewhat more defensive position. It is rumored that next game, a full 6 player team will take the ice, but no official word has been let out yet. The team of three played tolerably well, and the Squornshelan press does have assurances that Ko-Ko and Maurice will once again join Petr for the next game. Whether any of the other players do remains to be seen.

Well, at least we were consistently bad. I think we can chalk this down to experience (complete with a, er...'chastising' for the coach who chose that singularly awful team), and I remain surprised we scored nine goals at all.

But, nevertheless, congratulations to those teams who made it through, and commiserations to those who didn't quite get there.

We are not sure exactly what that means, but we do get at least one more game. Not bad for a bunch of guys and girls who learned to skate just weeks before this tourney began.

We no very little of Kericia and how they play, so we will just go out there and try to beat them into submission. (within the rules, of course. Yeah thats it. within the rules). Expect a nice and polite played game.

Ferrets to Play Kericia

After several days of intense training, Squornshelous has decided that the full squad, including Petr Kryzldlwycz and his 10 simian comrades. The descision was made after the apes made many improvements in their time at practice. Hopefully, this team will be coordinated enough to advance as far and farther than the Squornshelan Cherry Cup 17 team.

Razyors Play Cossowaries, Again!
Old rivalry comes up once again in Super 16

For the first two of Starblaydia's four Cherry Cups in the cabinet, the Rayzors had to overcome Tanah Burung in the Final before they could lift the trophy. Even in Cherry Cup 15 there was one massive drunken brawl on the ice between the two teams before Starblaydia went to the Final. Now, once again, in Cherry Cup 18, one of the oldest rivalries still going in Ice Hockey will be rekindled once more.

Starblaydia breezed through the Group Stage, only being out-scored - by just a single goal - by a Squornshelous Ferrets side in the central conference. The Rayzors, however, blasted an incredible ten goals past old rivals Vilita in their final Conference match in the Southeast Conference.

Will Thorin Nibin get his hands on that Don Cherry-shaped trophy for a fourth time, with Starblaydia getting an overall fifth Cup? There are fifteen other teams who will have a say in it, but it's looking good so far.

It wouldn't even matter if I mentioned fruit on this line...

"They've done the draw then?"

"Oh, yes. It's not as bad as we expected. We have Formal Dances"

"We do? I've never been invited."

"I'm sure they've heard that joke many times, sir."

"Joke?"

"Never mind...We stand a chance of making the next round."

"Well, that's all I really cared about."

CORNELIU IN SWEET 16

In a rare appearence, the Corneliu Penguins have qualified for the sweet 16 for the first time in a while.

"This really is a big lift to our team. Hopefully we can take this opportunity and show the hockey world just what this team can do."

"This really is a nice change of pace. Our team has dropped into medicraty but now we have a chance to erase that. We actually have a shot at making the finals this year and hopefully I can lead the team there."

Corneliu has suffered set back after set back after making it deep into the playoffs their first year in Cherry Cup. This year's team has done what some of the others have done and that is qualify for the first round of the playoffs. However, they have an opportunity to do what those same teams can't do and that is make it out of the first round.

Their first round opponet is The Gulf States and they are one of the tougher teams in the league. This is what the coach had to say about them:

"They will be a tough opponet. We are not going to change our gameplan much but we are putting more emphases on our puck control and penalty killing. That has been our biggest weakness this year and we are doing all that we can to correct it."

Will this be the year they make it to the Frozen Four or will they get bounced out of the tourny as the teams that has come before have done?

uh.... minor problem here. No one would've gotten the extra point if the shoot out ended in a 4-4 tie. So I am going to ask how you arrived at the 5-4 score.

Then you really should fix the way you have the score written because it looks to me that it was tied 4-4 in regulation, then it went into overtime with no one scoring, followed by a 4-4 shootout.

OOC: It looks to me like a football/soccer type way of writing it. 5-4 in overtime, having finished as a 4-4 tie in the 3 periods of normal time. How you would write it in an Ice Hockey-style scoreline is beyond me.

In hockey? 5-4 OT

Now if it ended in a shoot out, it would still be 5-4 but the goals scored in the shootout would be in Paranthesis.

"Won again?"

"We've been getting Bettia in every round"

"That was a terrible joke, sir."

"I know, I know. There's still hope for us?"

"Yes, sir. Luckily no one has noticed our progression. Especially with the complaints over how the published scores should appear on the official notes"

We set our scene in Krytenia, in a changing room currently populated by some of the biggest and ugliest brutes Bettia has to offer - why yes, it's our beloved Icebergs, psyching themselves up for their crunch match against the Apologetic Kittens.

Coach Howarth is addressing his players in his usual firey demeanour.

"...and I don't want to see any mercy out there... what don't I want to see?"

"MERCY!" came the collective reply.

"Apologetic, are they? Well, we'll make them sorry they ever skated onto the same rink as us. WHAT WILL THEY BE?"

"SORRY!"

"I want to see you go out there and win!"

"YEAH!"

"I want you to smash those kittens to pieces."

"YEAH!"

"I want you to knock them into next week!"

"YEAH!"

"Give them the beating of their lives!"

"YEAH!"

"Grind them into the ice!"

"YEAH!"

"Erm, no. I don't think we should do that actually"

A huge gasp rises up from the assembled players, and they stare at star centre Ikrima Thruxton who's sitting there holding yesterday's copy of The Enlightener.

"Just what the hell do you mean by that, Krimmy?"

"Well, according to a recent UN survey, Bettians love kittens. If we did all those things, we could be in for a spot of bother back home."

Coach Howarth snatches the paper out of Thruxton's hands and reads it himself.

"Official: Bettians Love Kittens... UN survey... tests involving kittens... compassionate citizens... well that's just chuffing great, that is." he said, putting the paper down and taking a moment composing his thoughts. "Right - this is what we'll do... I want you to go out there and give them the feeding of their lives, with luxury cat food AND fish-flavoured biscuits!"

"Um, yeah." came the less-than-fierce reply.

"I want you to get pieces of string and play with them, making them skate around in circles until they get all dizzy and tired and fall over onto the ice."

"Right... yes. Erm boss, I don't think they're actually kitt..."

"And when they're down, I want you to tickle their tummies and..."

"Now hold on just a minute - feeding them and making them chase bits of string is all well and good, but there's no way on earth I'm tickling another man's tummy."

"Ah yes, good point... forget that last bit. Just get out there and win, okay?"

"Okay, LET'S DO IT!" roar the players. "Here kitty kitty kitty..."

WTF? Pacitalian ice hockey team finds itself in CC18 semi

WROXHAM, KRYTENIA (PSN) -- And.... whaaaaaaat? After stellar play by the Pacitalian national men's ice hockey team in the round-robin the squad earned its first playoff berth in its first ever try at international competition in this sport. And so far, they have performed quite admirably, downing Buben 5-1 in the second round and then just last night edging a hot Kerician team 2-1 to advance to... who would have guessed: the semifinals.

And guess who the Pacitalians face in this dear old semifinal: the Bettians. Pacitalian and Bettian teams are no strangers to each other - and while most of those matchups have been in football, there's no doubt a multi-sport rivalry is about to develop between these two nations. Pacitalia beat Bettia 3-2 in the quarterfinals of the Under-21 World Cup a few days ago, and so all eyes will be on this matchup to see what happens.

"Different sport, different environment," forward Rano Dovungamo said in response. "We're not going to be looking at 'defending the Pacitalian sporting superiority', just trying to win and get to the final. Bettia has great athletes, so we'll be on the watch. We know how big this game is."

Bettia put up four goals to edge Apologetic Kittens 4-3. In the other quarterfinals, Starblaydia and Oliverry won, with the lack of Kalaalit Nunaat, Squornshelous and Hockey Canada's respective presences shocking the entire ice hockey community. In fact, if one looks at it that way, the Pacitalians and Bettians, and perhaps the Oliverrians or Starblaydians, shouldn't even be here.

But they are.

"That's something we're quite proud of," Dovungamo added. "To be top four in the tournament at the very least - it's pretty sweet."

Bookmakers are giving Bettia a slight edge, and this newspaper regardless expects a bone-jarring, nerve-wracking match nonetheless. And a close one, on top of that. See you at the semifinals!

PACITALIA v STARBLAYDIA
Oliverry

Oliverry loses to the mighty dwarves!!

6-2 was the score. The coach blamed this on the players, which have had over 200 minutes of penalty during the match. 2 general fights as well. After first period, half of the players were out of the game and it was 2-2. But, in the second period, Starblaydia realized that we were playing hockey and scored 4 goals in 10 minutes. Changing the goalie on the oliverrian side changed the game, but it was too late. The Oliverrians realized that hockey is not supposed to be that rough too late. In 3rd period, players started to play very rough again and another general fight started with 2 minutes left in the 3rd period. There were only 3 players plus the goaltender left on each side. Once the game was finished, players started to become very fight-minded again, but some Rejistanians steped up on the rink and shooted every player with va'karela'ny. That's how the game finished. Oliverrian players now wish Pacitalia will win the final against Starblaydia.

NO. WAY. Pacitalia slides past Bettia into the final!

WROXHAM, KRYTENIA (PSN) -- Straight out of a children's book, the Cinderella story that is the Pacitalian national men's ice hockey team continued their fantastic run through their first-ever Cherry Cup, where it has all culminated in a 4-3 win over new sporting rivals Bettia to reach, yes... the final of the entire tournament. No joke. They're there.

And although the Pacitalian team is assured almost certain defeat at the hands of the veteran Starblaydi team, which has more experience in the finals than any other group of nations combined and has won the most Cherry Cups, they know this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. There's no doubt there probably won't be another chance like this for a long time.

"We're totally pumped," second-line left-winger Antonio Finghulero said Thursday evening after a Pacitalian national team once again got the better of their Bettian counterparts (twice in football, and now, once in ice hockey). "This is a fantastic opportunity. We're definitely the underdogs, and we like that. We're out for blood now, I assure you. This is the Holy Grail of hockey, and we worked hard to get here. We're not about to give up and get complacent."

Bettia opened the score early with Chris Beckton's amazing rocket through goalie Roberto Fedomino's five hole at 5:20 of the first period. It looked to be all-Bettia early as Beckton then fed Ikrima Thruxton at 15:49 and put the Bettians up 2-0. However, the Pacitalian team wasn't done yet.

"We were down 2-0 and the fans knew," forward Rano Dovungamo, a rock for the team in this tournament, said. "They knew we weren't going to just sit back and take that. We made mistakes early, and we paid for it with a two-goal deficit but we wanted that win. We wanted it badly. And as soon as we realised that in the first intermission, it was a whole new game."

And a whole new game it was, as Dovungamo stepped out of the penalty box, receiving a Timo Ursanti pass that landed at his stick perfectly. Dovungamo sprinted towards the net and then deked out Dafydd Clayton, shoving the puck past Clayton's left pad to cut the Bettians' lead in half at 2:59 of the second period.

And Dovungamo fed Ursanti in turn seven minutes later, on a trip play that led Ursanti at least twenty feet in front of the Bettian defencemen on an error by the Bettian team after Dovungamo deked and backhanded it forward. Ursanti headed goalway on a wide breakaway and wristed the puck five-hole on Clayton to even the score at 2-2, 10:10 in.

The second period was an even battle, and coach Ando Amposino's team talk in the second intermission seemed to spark the Pacitalians into working even harder. Not one minute in, Finghulero connected on a short pass from Valentino Sandruvali and redirected it at an odd angle behind Clayton for the team's first lead of the game, 3-2. But Bettia wasn't about to give up hope, either, and Beckton made sure his side was still in it at 5:40, knocking his second of the game past Fedomino to knot the game back up at 3-3.

From there, it took exactly 14 minutes to decide the winner of the contest.

With twenty seconds to go in regulation, the rough-and-tumble first-line right-winger Pado Castello earned Pacitalia its third breakaway of the game and fired an amazing post-deke howitzer past a bewildered Clayton to put Pacitalia up for good.

As said, Pacitalia plays Starblaydia in the final, but this time there's some transportation involved. The team now moves to Avidia for the championship match and the game goes tomorrow night at Krytenia's famous Icehouse. It's twenty-four hours until we find out whether the blue, white, red and green take home the Cherry Cup, or whether it once again goes to the Dwarves.

Starblaydia is being favoured by bookmakers with an average score of 3-1, while Oliverry, blasted by the Starblaydi team in the semis 6-2 will be cheering on the Pacitalian team in the final.
