The End of Struggle

Etaros

"It is the end of struggle, the beginning of a new life in which we will throw off tradition in the name of prosperity and progress." -- Eratis Cyrus Kasparov

International Statement Presented by the Erasati Republic of Etaros:

The age of Elven domination in Etarosi politics has ended. After countless decades of internal struggle and complete disregard for the international community, it has been deemed that the forces of democracy have prevailed. Our friends, who may consider themselves quite opposite by now, may recall at one time the attempt for elections in our nation. Those were hijacked, and the seed of a great man sought to destroy our nation. After a civil war that lasted a decade, a deceitful Calatari rose to power, and she too was overthrown. However, the humans of Etaros were long oppressed. There had to become a time where we, too, could gain equality. The atmosphere - which was rank with the smell of blood and smoke - needed change. In the midst of anarchy, we created a new anarchy. It was one that had a goal, a vision for a future that was not amiss with kinslaying among elves and consistent dictatorship. After a quarter of a century of bloodshed and strife, we have gained equality, democracy, and a new life.

The Erasati Republic of Etaros is not anti-elven. It is a nation devoted to peace and prosperity. We were outraged at the kinslaying that was taking place, outraged that our government continued to oppress and regard us as second-class citizens. Elves are a gift to mankind, but the ones that had embedded themselves in Etarosi politics were a stain and abhorration of elves everywhere. They reduced their own numbers to a minority of approximately twenty percent. The current government of Etaros has dedicated itself to a mission of restoration and innovation. It has come forth to announce the return a fantastic nation - one that was hopefully missed by friends, allies, and trade partners.

In regard to our sudden collapse into total stupidity many years ago, we offer our apologies. It was unfair that our government then was not responsible enough to formulate concise and needed measures to ensure stability, and now the current government must take the blame for it. We do so willingly, however, and hope that our allies can forgive us of our past. Almost immediately we have begun rebuilding the ravaged areas of our great nation, and admit that the city of Ildanor was the only one to not be physically marred by our decades-long struggle. Currently, it is the seat of government, and does have an operating airport and seaport. Any foreign dignitaries are welcome, though we must warn that although security is ensured, the infrastructural and cultural integrity of the city is not. In short, years of neglect have created a very boring and dilapidated-looking Ildanor.

The Erasati Republic will not be seeking foreign aid, due to damages likely caused by our abrupt decline, but we will accept it.

At present, the Eratis (literally translated as "People's Servant") has authorized the construction of a new capital city on the southern shores of Etaros. Its name has not been decided yet, but there is no doubt it will be a standard of economic, cultural, and political innovation in the Republic. There are thousands of workers under private contractors building a city that will hopefully prove to be a milestone in the genesis of a great era. Any foreign companies interested in being hired by the Etarosi government to help rebuild our national infrastructure are encouraged to contact the Etarosi Trade Ministry.

For our friends, allies, and trade partners interested in what Etaros has become, we will provide a brief summary. At present, Eratis Cyrus Kasparov (direct descendant of the Kasparov and Van Arsden families of Lietuveska) rules the country. He was elected by popular vote with a victory of 72% of the vote. The bicameral Erasati Congress has a total of five parties and 500 seats. The dominant party, which is the party that Kasparov chairs, is the Etarosi Democratic Party, with 35% of the seats. Next in line is the Erasati Conservative Party, with 28% of the seats. The Etarosi Green Party has 16% of the seats, the Etarosi Libertarian Capitalist Party has 12% of the seats, and the Etarosi Elven Party has 9% of the seats. Other minor parties without power are the Erasati Nationalist Party, the Erasati Royalist Party, the Erasati Proletariat Movement, the Etarosi Labour Party, and the Jihadist Front.

The current government coalition is formed by the Etarosi Democratic Party and the Etarosi Green Party, giving them a slim majority of 51%. The opposition coalition composes of the ECP and ELCP, with a total of 40%, which is enough to block any major legislation that requires a two-thirds majority. The EEP doesn't align with either party, though tends to side with the Right on economic issues and the Left on social matters.

To end this international statement, the Etarosi Ministry of Foreign Affairs would like to thank our friends, allies, and trade partners for their continued support of our nation. Through vigorous work and dedication, we are totally confident in our ability to rise once again. May we all be given a mandate to govern, through the ballot box or through the hearts of our peoples.

...

The Wonderful nation of Vegana congratulates Etaros for removing the Stigma that is Metahuman and finally reaching independance. No longer will the proud people of Etaros struggle under the Yoke of the Nephilim but can now wander into the glory that they were predestined for. More and more nations sees the light and hundreds of years of oppression is finally over. Thanks to enlightened nations like Etaros humanity secures it survival from the elven slavery.

The wonderful nation of Vegana offers a very beneficial trade agreement to help the people of Etaros to get stability and prosperity within a near future.

God is Great!

Joseph Van Arsden, though in his late 70s, was quite able to become angry when reading something he found reprehensible. As Foreign Minister of Etaros, he received the message sent by the "Wonderful" nation of Vegana. With a raised eyebrow and further research, he decided that it would be most prudent to change from a polite "no thanks" to one of outright decline.

Reply to the Benevolent Jaar of Vegana:

The Erasati Republic is not racist or anti-elven. We have no desire to align ourselves with those that espouse such ideologies, and it is apparent that Vegana does so with an extremely misguided air of arrogance.

It is not my intention to insult you, Benevolent Jaar, but it does not take much to say that we will outright decline your offer to a trade agreement. Sentient rights and capitalism are two tenets that unite the Etarosi people.

Our decision is final.

Joseph Van Arsden
Etarosi Ministry of Foreign Affairs

In order to again reiterate that the Republic was in no way supportive of movements to limit sentient rights, Van Arsden put out a brief public statement.

Statement from the Foreign Ministry of Etaros:

It appears that some nations feel that our recent international statement was a veiled attempt to declare elvenkind to be subhuman and worthy of destruction. Oh, how misguided is such an interpretation! The Erasati Republic was referring to a small sect of idiots that can often give a bad reputation to an entire group, if allowed. However, the people of Etaros are not so blind and ignorant -- elves are sentient, and this government of Etaros supports fully sentient rights.

We refuse to align ourselves with any nation that does not feel the same way.

Statement from the Ministry of Foreign and Economic Affairs, Midlonia

It is good to see the end to the isolation that has gripped the nation of Etaros for too long, we wish to extend the olive branch to the peoples of Etaros and welcome them back after a time of cold and darkness, and welcome them back into the warm light that is the world stage. Much has changed in the world since they last looked out upon it, let us hope that the swirling tides that is the stage upon which we are but actors does not scare them away again.

OOC: This is mostly to fill in some character definition. It's a good read, IMO, but if you want to cut straight to the crap, scroll down you frickin heathen.

IC:

A laugh could be heard from the hallway in the former headquarters of Ildanor Real Estate, an old, brick building situated in an older area of downtown that had been largely abandoned. The area was now a six-block radius of government activity, gated and heavily guarded.

In the hallway was Joseph Van Arsden, walking at a rather comfortable pace for his age with his wooden cane. He claimed, perhaps in a rather senile way, that he did not need the cain -- it just suited his purpose of appearing to be a learned elderly gentleman. He hobbled along until he came to the door of Kasparov's office, and rapped it thrice with his cane. (He calls his cane "ol' pecks", for future knowledge)

The laughing halted, and a rather young woman opened. "Hello, Mr. Van Arsden, come in," said Minister of Finance Rebekah Natalya with a good smile and a chuckle. He shook his head as he hobbled into the room, "Isn't this a place of government?" She feigned shock and pushed her long, brown hair behind her stylish glasses. "But we were discussing government." Kasparov grinned as he finished a sip of red wine, "Yes, we were. I was informing her that the Reich apparently has some 'good apples' in its midst and at least one of them wanted to establish a trade deal." Van Arsden pushed his small, binocular glasses down a bit as he gave the Eratis a rather benign look, an easy way to say he didn't understand how such information was funny. "I always told your grandfather drinking on the job was loony, and you Natalya, should know better." He grunted as he took a seat without invitation (much to Natalya's shagrin), and rapped Kasparov's shin with his cane. "Ol' pecks agrees and you ought to lay off," he gruffily said.

Ignoring the grunt from his boss, he continued. "I've got a letter for you from the Midlonians. We've never had official contact with them, but I did a bit of research." He handed over a portfolio with the letter and related information. "Apparently, we're very ignorant about our trade partners. And very ignorant about potential alliances. Get me a cup of coffee, would you, Rebekah?" The younger woman muttered something about "batty old bastards" as she went to the kitchenette on the far side of the office and did so. Upon returning, Van Arsden said with a tone of grave seriousness, "I may be old and a bit off, but my deceased father is behind you and he'd like to take you to dinner." She turned with shock and, seeing no one, widened her eyes incredulously and took a seat. Van Arsden immediately placed his coffee on the desk.

During this, Kasparov was reviewing the information. He went to take a sip of wine before he saw the eyes of Van Arsden dart up, and he quickly picked up a pen lying next to the glass. He pretended to circle something on the paper, looking busy. "That pen doesn't write. I stole yours and replaced it with my faulty one," pointed out the old man, waving an identical pen mischeviously.

Kasparov grinned and replied, "Alright old man. What do you suggest I do about the Midlonians?" Van Arsden replied, "Put a bit more sugar in this Rebeckah, I find it too bitter for my stale tongue. And we ought to reply, of course. I would also begin secret talks regarding our possible membership in the Concordat." (Remember, the guy hasn't even touched his drink..)

"Ahh...but aren't we a signatory of VERITAS already?" The old man received his cup of coffee again and without tasting it, put it on the desk. "VERITAS is a fabulous alliance, no doubt, but I believe that if you wish to carry Etaros into a pro-active international role, you ought to consider other alliances as well. I never suggested we leave. I don't think....did I?" Kasparov stifled a grin, "No, you didn't." "Ah, good. I thought I was losing it. Rebeckah, --" The younger woman protested, "Oh for the love of Christ, would you please let me sit in peace?!" The old man stared hard at her. "I was pointing out that you haven't touched your coffee, miss." She looked confused. "What coffee?" "The one sitting in front of me, of course." He smiled and nodded. "Ahhh, I see. You don't like coffee but you thought it professional to drink it in front of me. Don't worry, my dear, I am not one to impress." She looked at Kasparov with exasperation, and he simply shrugged his shoulders. Cyrus Kasparov had grown used to the old man, and sometimes suspected it was an act to throw others off. He never was entirely sure of it, however...

"Right then, Mr. Van Arsden. You've got my full support if you want to notify the Midlonians about our intent to join the Concordat. I find the treatises to be in need of reform, but acceptable so long as such reforms are sought." The old man nodded, "Right then. Ol' pecks and I will be scurrying off to my office." He hobbled out, and after the door was shut behind him, Rebeckah turned and looked at Cyrus with shock. "The audacity of that man never fails to amaze me!" "Nor I," replied the Eratis with detachment as he took another sip of his wine.

Re: Statement (fwd to head of department)

I must thankly the Midlonian Ministry of Foreign and Economic Affairs for its warm words and compassion. The Erasati Republic is very grateful for such words, and hope that they can be transformed into mutual action that will bring our nations closer together in a conflicting and complicated world.

It has also been noted that Midlonia is a member of the Concordat, and the Republic is interested in entering talks with your leaders to determine whether Etarosi membership would be beneficial to our national interests. Of course, the nature of these talks is to remain secret from the public -- the government does not wish to allow the press to go nuts. It is the official position of the Eratis that the Erasati Republic would be willing to join the Concordat (if it is wished by its members), so long as reforms are made to the treatises. We find them to be too broad and inconspicuous, with all due respect, and hope they can be modified.

With a hand of thanks,

OOC: Oh gawd, not again… Grr… Must you have your entire regime collapse (without letting anyone intervene, which is annoying) each time you're too idle to post?

The Senatorial Permanent Committee of Legislation and Management, Duat

Aiyana Tiercean reclined on a couch by the wide window of the committee’s meeting room, “Etaros,” she said, skimming through the latest reports, “is this nation completely unable to maintain a working government? It seems like only months ago that the so-called oppressive regime of this Calatári Liëssa – what happened to her anyway, anyone know? - was being established and we were giving them aid.

“It’s like a bloody penguin. Get up, shuffle along, fall down onto the ice again, smack.”

“Oh come,” said another Senator, “It’s not nearly that bad.”

“Well, it does feel that way. And honestly, what’s all this about ‘elven domination’ – I certainly heard no indication of any form of wickedness on her part, it’s probably some ridiculous propaganda - and damn it, should we really be giving these people aid, they didn’t seem to spend it well last time, given their immediate collapse.”

“It’s the principle of the thing, they’re meant to be allies.”

“Oh, I suppose so, but damn…”

"Impossible!" cried Alisari DuPonte, Third Echelon Fifth Speaker. She was not impressed, and not afraid to show it. The up-and-coming Human - youngest Elected Member of Imperial House - had already gained a reputation as a fiery, emotional speaker.

Then again, most of the Elected were.

Suri smiled faintly at the antics. The Elected had, so far, dominated proceedings. They usually did - until the vote. The People inevitably got their way, and almost always through the Selects. It was the Great Irony - as it was fondly named by those of a sociological or historical bent - that the non-elected members of the Iluvauromeni Crown Government worked more for the people than the allegedly democratically elected did.

'Allegedly' in this case referred to the ongoing debates surrounding the validity of the word 'democracy' as used when speaking of so-called Greco model democracy. It was a debate which had lasted some centuries in Iluvauromen, and was showing no signs of abating - or conclusion.

Suri sighed quietly. Alisari was still ranting, and many of the Elected were nodding vigorously from around the circular vault of Imperial House. Even the trimensionally-present seemed engaged in her words.

But the Selected, seated opposite (in most cases) the Elected, were not so enthralled. Generally older (and in some cases wiser), they had, as the saying went, been chosen rather than had chosen. They were ex officio, but not necessarily foolish madmen and women.

Finally the Human took her seat. Finally. There were no limits on speaking time, so long as one remained on topic. The Prime Speaker would not allow rambling... and in some debates, would not allow pauses either. To pause was to stumble, to lose clarity - and generally implied stalling. So went the logic behind that Regulation, at any rate.

Suri stood, slowly, accepting the slight nod from the Prime Speaker which granted her the right to do so.

"Noted gathered," she began, "I must protest the Honourable Lady's claim that the provisional acceptance of Etaros as a reformed, free, sovereign state is 'impossible'. Since my Honourable Colleague did not appear to make any reasoned summation as to why the House should view said as impossible, I move that it is, in fact, eminently legal and possible.

"Of course, legality is not the concern of this House."

Suri smiled. That had, in fact, been the only rationale behind Alisari's point. A point which was surely even more crumbled and decrepit than it had been to begin with.

"What is our concern - if I may be so bold as to pretend the intellect to advise the House - is that there does not appear to have been any international observation of the so-called free and democratic elections which has granted this new regime 'legitimacy' on a national scale.

"Therefore I move that the House cannot advise full acceptance to the Unified Government, as to do so would suggest legitimisation of elections which were, to my knowledge and the knowledge, insofar as I am aware, of the House collectively, not observed by independent and neutral persons.

"I do suggest - as does the Pro Voting Bloc which I am leading in this debate," and which Suri had formed through her own damned hard work, she allowed herself to acknowledge privately, "that we advise temporary and provisional acceptance, with a view to permanent acceptance when more transparent elective procedure is put in place and/or international observers confirm the validity and fairness of the elections which established the so-called authenticity of the Etaros government."

She took her seat, nodding slightly.

The rest of the debate she carefully half-ignored; it didn't matter. She had the sense of the House already - and she knew that her way was right.

At least for now.

"The Unified Commonality Government provisionally and tentatively accepts the sovereign rights of the newly established Etaros Government.

"We highlight the words 'provisionally' and 'tentatively'; since the recent elective process in Etaros was not, to our knowledge, confirmed and validated by international observers, we cannot and will not fully endorse Etaros as a freely democratic state.

"The provisional and tentative nature of our acceptance, therefore, shall remain in place until such times as Etaros holds it's next national elections, and international observers are allowed into the state to ensure legitimacy."

IC:

Van Arsden read the letter from the Unified Commonality Government, and raised his eyebrows. "And they are ones to assert superiority," he muttered to an aide that was also in the office. After reading the letter, she shrugged her shoulders and replied, "Think little of those you do not know, and say it, and you will be seen as an expert. Wait and see, and you will be seen as hesitant. They are but idiots."

He nodded and rapped "ol' pecks" against his desk. "Yes, yes they are." He threw the letter in the fireplace and did not even bother with a reply. "I haven't got time for meddlesome, authoritarian bastards I've barely heard of." His aide grinned as she continued filing government documents, and he pulled the next letter off the stack.

It was like ballet, he mused.

Ballet gone mad, perhaps, was the near-instant modification. He scratched the tip of his nose, thoughtfully. No, not ballet. That Nenyan whirling thing. Tel'shava, wasn't it? Yes, that was it.

With all the swords.

Only the dancers weren't dancers. They were various chunks of space debris (including sandwiches - just the other day Maintainence had had to send out one of the little drones to clear 'anomolous consumable debris' from one of the ears of MISAT-47-C-9), satelites, etc etc.

And the swords, of course, weren't really swords. In this case, they were more like... microwave guidance beams. Yes. Each one had to be precisely placed, or the dancers would lose limbs.

Or, more realistically, they'd misadjust their position and skip into the atmosphere.

Yuri yawned, stretching his arms above his head dispassionately. "Boom," he mused, thoughtfully.

A small voice in the back of his head mused misaligning a calculation somewhere or other. Just to see the boom.

He sighed.

Of course, his work was monitored. What he wasn't clear on was who monitored the monitor. It was always a bit puzzling when he mused too far in that direction (he had 'never done well with social intereaction theory', as he said too often to his first wife), but he didn't much care. Hadn't then, either, really. The math was all that mattered.

And this wasn't the most engaging job in that sense. All he had to do was check the math. Not all of it - just the assigned algorithms for obvious mistakes. And not by himself. Several thousand others also had the task - it was imperative to ensure that the vast array of traffic under the Iluvauromeni flag did not...

Well, go boom.

Although all of it going boom wasn't very likely.

He peered at the monitor, doing 'quick' sums in his head. The kind with twenty digits at every corner.

A grunt. "What the hell is there?"

Chubby fingers prodded carelessly at the keyboard - he liked it, rather than all those flips and toggles, or those new-fangled touchscreens - and succeeded in bringing up data on the coordinates in question.

Some sort of random position over...

A grunt. Well, not quite over. It was never over, of course, but the origin of the request made it quite clear what this was about.

He smiled, faintly. Lips mumble something very quietly as he reads:

"Etaros..."

* * *

Far above, a satelite shifts orbit slowly. It is not a significant shift in orbit, but it does allow the myriad of information-gathering equipment that compose the IDFI-installed intelligence suite to focus quite precisely on a certain area of the planet whirling deceptively slowly below.

Of course, the 'whirling' soon ceases, on a relative scale, as the satelite 'halts' it's momentum, neatly slotting into a geostatic position. Expensive on energy, but the Sun is paying.

And a thousand eyes and ears carefully observe, listening and watching Etaros below.

[OOC: Technically speaking, the satelite would not be deployed 'directly' above Etaros, but at an angle to (within a ninety degree field of observation), and at substantial distance from the planet itself. Sensory-wise, it observes media comms, etc, as well as more high-definition military-grade intelligence equipment. Depending on your tech-level, that could either be infrared observation with modern-standard equipment, or the newest Iluvauromeni fare, which would be wide-ranging EM observation coupled with infrared/white light observation through a mercury-lens focused telescope (the sort that can read the 'I luv mum' tattoo on an ant's back).]

"Again?!"

"Hey, at least democracy prevailed now. Nothing wrong with that."

"Yes, but this is, what, the third time over the past few decades? They could make a slogan. 'Etaros: A Revolution Every Year.' "

"Come off it. You know that you're pleased."

" 'Spose so. What's this about elven domination, now? It's not like the elves are totalitarian. Not all of 'em, anyway."

"Eh. Probably nothing, knowing them- you know what they're like. Freedom of sentients and such. Just a badly phrased paper, probably."

"Probably."

The first snow had fallen in Ildanor. Kasparov sipped his red wine as he watched it, noticing the military patrols in the streets below. He was in the very center of what was called "Government Central" in which the Erasati Elite Guard had established a six-block radius where all government activity was restricted to, with everyone entering and exiting requiring identification and retina scans. Weapons checks were also made to ensure extra security. The outer two blocks of the radius were under heavy patrol and defense, with the inner four containing intense security and ridiculously heavy patrols. Scanners, floating devices that engaged in retina scans and visual data checks, occupied this sector as well. The technology was fairly new, and only about two dozen of them were in operation. Two-thirds of them were located in Government Central, protecting and following orders.

Kasparov saw one of the scanners zoom past his second-story office, and he crouched to see if there was any action. A man was being interrogated by an Elite Guardsman. The scanner did a quick check-up, and a green light blinked on its front. The man was allowed entry into the building. Cyrus smiled as he thought he was in the safest place in the world, where nobody could watch him. Little did he know a meddlesome stranger had taken upon itself to monitor his country with scrutiny. Little did they know that there was nothing to monitor -- Etaros had indeed become a modern democratic republic, with a fully legitimate government and very pleased populace.

He took to sipping his red wine once again, noting the fact that he had not gotten drunk yet. Quite remarkable, considering he'd downed a whole bottle in a matter of four hours. He was certain he'd have to cut back on the drinking -- truth of the matter was that he just loved red wine. "It must be the Lietuv in me," he thought with a grin.

Minister Akanimara,

On behalf of the Erasati Republic, I thank you most sincerely for your support in this busy time. We are working on re-establishing relations with all VERITAS nations, and Etaros is proud to be an ally of the United Solaris Federation.

In fact, it should be expressed now, as it is appropriate, that the Erasati Republic is seeking possible entry in the Concordat. We have previously noted that the USF is a member, and find such information to be very pleasing. The Erasati Republic is most interested in seeking some sort of conference regarding our entry, in which Concordat member nations could offer delegates to question us on our philosophy, and vice versa. Perhaps this may be asking too much, but it is this government's policy to carefully go about our business.

Again, the Erasati Republic and I thank you and the United Solaris Federation for your support and congratulations. We are looking forward to an increased dialogue.

"What is the status of our relations with this ... Etaros?" Gorrm looked over his desk at Ambassador bosska, while keeping his other eye on the missive regarding the resurgance in the form of a democratic government.

"In honesty? Aside from being a signatory of VERITAS, and the occasional eye-meetings of our representative and theirs, non-existant." Bosska thrummed his throat lowly while looking over a copy of the missive. "This might be a good time to amend that. there are many signatories to the charter, and we have relations with less than a third of them. Sign and forget, if you will. A poor diplomatic move."

"Hruummmm....." A clawed finger scritches at the leathery tendrils under Gorrm's chin. "Amend that, then. And do so with efficiency. I despise wasting paper and bandwidth on a conversational dance."

Bosska chuckles. Gorrm is a full generation younger than him. In fact, it was Bosska himself who was once the Emperor's tutor decades past. Now Gorrm has fully come into his own, and has surpassed his teachings. This fact amused him to no end.

We have great faith within this nation, which is a Tiburonese ally via VERITAS, and therefore request that a conference be held in Megastation Shining Light to determine Etarosi compatibility with the Concordat and hopefully vote on Etarosi membership.

Sincerely,
Sakura Akanimara,
Minister of State,
The United Solaris Federation of Tiburon

OOC: Alright, here's a general timeline for everything that's happening. Of course, I had to complicate things by firing Van Arsden (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?p=10163272#post10163272), but we'll deal. The replies to Sakkra and the USF take place in the days leading up to the unrest in AU. The unrest in AU takes place approximately four months after the Etarosi government was firmly established.

Thus, the "International Statement" that declared an end of struggle took place about three months after the Etarosi government was firmly established.

I hope this makes things easier for everyone. It certainly does for me. :P

Greetings,

Thank you for your congratulations and devoted support. I, and the Erasati Republic, greatly appreciate it during this time of beginning for us.

In regards to sending a representative to more strongly establish relations with the Herpetological Empire, I would be very happy to do so. My office will contact you soon on an appropriate date and time for such a meeting.

Again, thank you for your support. The Erasati Republic will not forget it.

Subject: Megastation Shining Light Conference

Minister Akanimara,

I thank you for your consideration and attempt to welcome Etaros to a new alliance. I will begin to choose representatives to attend the meeting, and I am very excited about the possibilities of this conference.

We will be able to arrive via private transportation, due to our government having virtually no space capability (a civil war destroyed it). All I request is a date and time, as well as the location of Megastation Shining Light.

Thank you very much for your continued cooperation in our endeavour to form new relationships and solidify our strength on the international stage.

With best regards,

Joseph Van Arsden
Ministry of Foreign Affairs

Van Arsden fired, Kasparov seeks new Minister of Foreign Affairs

ILDANOR -- Today, the government of Eratis Cyrus Kasparov announced that Joseph Van Arsden has been removed as Minister of Foreign Affairs.

According to government sources, the elderly statesman was charged with incompetence and a slow response to unrest brewing in Austar Union. The country, which currently has an absolutist regime, came under a degree of serious unrest and violence yesterday. The unrest was sparked by revolutionaries that aim to change the government of Lord Indigo Blue, and turn Austar Union into either a democratic leftist state or a religious extremist theocracy. Both ideologies are currently waging a sort of unorganized war upon the reigning regime in an attempt to achieve their goals.

Caught in yesterday's frenzy was Ambassador Lothluín Laurënil and her diplomatic staff at the Etarosi embassy in Austar Union. "The city was in an state of complete chaos, and there was real concern about the safety of the embassy," said Ambassador Laurënil. "I tried to contact Mr. Van Arsden, but he sent me a very plain and generic reply telling me to not intervene in Austarian affairs." Apparently, that is when the matter began to worsen, and the ambassador was forced to make a number of decisions that contradicted her orders. "I knew I was going against what I was told, but [Van Arsden] refused to adapt to the situation," further commented Laurënil.

That charge was angrily rejected by the former Minister. "That is absolutely untrue," he said. "I specifically told her to contact me when the situation began to deteriorate. She did not, and that is her fault -- not mine." When asked whether he felt the Eratis' decision was justified, Van Arsden replied, "No, it was not. He did not hear my side of the story. He, in no way, cared to investigate the matter. I feel as if I have been set up."

Kasparov, at a press conference earlier today, laughed at the charge made by Van Arsden. "Set up? I haven't set anyone up. I have a policy of demanding immediate decision-making from my Cabinet. I believe that Mr. Van Arsden failed to react in a timely manner, and failed to prepare for possible changes in the situation. I stand fully behind my decision." When asked who would replace Van Arsden, the Eratis said he could not answer such a question.

There has been much rumor and debate regarding a possible pick for the position. Political analysts say that it would not be prudent for Kasparov to choose a novice player in the field of international relations. "He has got to pick someone that is experienced, disciplined, and willing to explore uncertain areas in Etarosi diplomacy," says Dean of Liberal Arts Matthias Normdaegen of the University of Indratis. When asked who he believed might be the best pick for Minister of Foreign Affairs, Normdaegan replied, "As of now, I could honestly see Xirnes Novalis becoming Minister of Foreign Affairs."

Xirnes Novalis is a native of Etarosi Haven (formerly Lietuveska), and is of a far stranger alien race than any that most Etarosi know. He does not even know his own origins, because he was raised in the formerly Lietuv country. His family disappeared when he was very young, around the time of the Phyrric invasion that devastated most of Lietuveska. Xirnes, now 50 years old (which is relatively young for his race, called "Eldranir", whose people often live to be 200) is an expert in foreign affairs and economics. He has served for numerous foreign leaders and, at one point, served in the Menelmacari military. When asked about Novalis, the Eratis simply replied, "I do not know."

Though one of the most respected statesmen in Etarosi history has been removed from office, many have said there is much to gain from a fresh member of the Cabinet. Perhaps the tale will be told in the coming weeks, quite possibly changing the direction of foreign policy for the Erasati Republic.

Kasparov announces intent to join Concordat, Etarosi Democratic Party delighted

ILDANOR -- Today from Government Central, Eratis Cyrus Kasparov revealed that his government would seek to join the Concordat, a fairly respected alliance and establishment in the international community.

The government has been very keen to say that this is no indication of a split from VERITAS. "We are very proud of our VERITAS membership, and seek to maintain that membership so long as this country exists. The Concordat will simply be another avenue for the Erasati Republic to conduct foreign affairs," said the Eratis' spokesperson.

Although the government may be keen to show that, there is speculation that VERITAS allies will be less than pleased. "I don't think they'll be delighted at all. VERITAS powers are very wary of any moves that would drain from their power base," commented political pundit Ricardo Baker. "However, they may not react at all. VERITAS is hard to predict sometimes, and this may be one of those times," he added as an afterthought.

The United Solaris Federation of Tiburon recently informed the government of a location for talks to be held regarding Etarosi membership, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. They refused to disclose the location, but said it would be somewhere in the Sol System. Furthermore, sources have revealed that the conference to be held was requested by the Ministry. However, officials declined to comment on whether that was true.

The Etarosi Democratic Party is apparently very pleased with the decision. "It has been a part of our platform to increase foreign affairs activity and involvement, and we are very proud of our leader for doing just that." However, praise was not universal from the Etarosi Congress. Conservatives are calling the conference, "an insult to VERITAS and ourselves. We cannot afford such a misguided digression from the true spirit of Etarosi foreign policy. The ECP calls upon the Eratis to not abandon our national sovereignty in pursuit of a few votes."

Government Central called the charge by the ECP, "a reprehensible and unfair attack upon the Eratis," and asked for, "a complete and remorseful apology." There was no reply from the Erasati Conservative Party.

Regardless of political support, it is clear that the Eratis has decided to move forward with talks concerning the Concordat. He does, however, require a two-thirds majority in the Etarosi Congress to vote in favor of the alliance if it is to be ratified. Kasparov said that VERITAS has not been formally contacted, but will be soon. "I have complete faith in our VERITAS allies, and I know that they will trust my judgement. They must know that I do not intend to drift away from them in any fashion. We are allies now, and we will remain allies so long as Reason guides this great nation."

The government was packing up its things. Not too long after the incident in Austar Union, the construction of Orbitas Enosti was nearly totally complete. Government Central in Ildanor was to be completely bulldozed and rebuilt, at government expense, to ensure that no secret information was accidentally left behind.

The new city would be a technological and architectural marvel when finally finished. It was already 60% completed, but there still needed more housing units for the people of the city to live in. Orbitas Enosti was already being hailed as, "the greatest show of Etarosi technology in history," and a, "true symbol of our importance, strength, and ability to innovate."

However, the headlines were covered by a dramatic change in government, in which Xirnes Novalis had been named the Foreign Minister. The alien, who appeared to be mostly human, was well-known for his conservative outlook. He was a strong diplomat, however, and was often very quiet and reserved. Xirnes Novalis had a power of creating unease in a rooom when he became unhappy with a situation -- whether it was a power of his race or one of those oddities of the universe, nobody knew. His piercingly orange eyes struck a powerful contrast with his dark, tanned skin. His fingers were long and elongated, his figure tall and slender. He usually wore traditional robes of his race, which he never named. They always seemed to have something more about them, and always drifted just above any surface, appearing to glide but also appearing to drag along the ground.

It is strongly rumored that Xirnes Novalis has powers that can alter states of mind, though they have not been totally proven or disproven. Many human Etarosi are a bit edgy about his acension to the position of Foreign Minister, the elves are bitter because they feel threatened by this new presence that holds more mystery and awe than themselves.

Novalis is absolutely determined to put Etaros in space once again. He is relentless in this mission, and has made it a top personal priority -- more subtly, he intends to improve relations so strongly with space-faring nations that Etaros will have an obligation to build a fantastic interstellar navy to not be outdone or seen as a weak and helpless ally.

More grounded intentions include strongly securing relations with Knootoss, enabling a smooth entry in the Concordat, and reaffirming alliances in VERITAS. Novalis is also convinced that diplomatic dominance cannot come without military strength, and will also use his influence through his new cabinet position to sway the government to aspire to the best and brightest military that Etaros can possibly achieve.

No doubt, a new time was dawning for the nation. It was leaving out of its long policy of gentle neutrality into one where enemies would be dealt with in a quick, efficient manner, and allies would be able to rely on the Erasati Republic.

Newspapers covered the development with earnest, excited and nervous. Left-wingers looked on with disappointment, right-wingers looked on with suspicion, but great happiness. Media outlets were being cautiously optimistic (with some "convincing" by the Eratis), and the attitude was, "Let's just wait and see. If it goes bad we'll scream holy hell. If not, we'll be pleased."

A few skeptics were concerned that the appointment of a staunch anti-democracy conservative to a post of great importance might lead the Republic down the wrong path. This seemingly tiny minority feared that an autocracy would be on its way if things got too out of hand -- meaning if Etarosi were convinced that order could only be achieved through "lite despotism".

OOC: This post is OOC *and* IC. I didn't post a newspaper article because it couldn't probe deep enough into the situation. You might notice that there is a level of media control exercised by the Eratis. I'm not sure if I'm going to make him a sort of "modern autocrat" (think Hugo Chavez..wins elections validly but has a very tight grip on what happens) or what. So yeah..something to consider. :P

Coming deal with Knootoss officially announced

ILDANOR -- The Ministry of Foreign Affairs today confirmed that the government intends to sell a portion of land in Etarosi Haven to the Dutch Democratic Republic in an attempt to take a load off of the colonial government there and further improve relations with the longstanding Etarosi ally.

In a press conference this morning, Foreign Minister Xirnes Novalis said that the decision has been on the table for some time. "We have just decided that now is the right time. The previous rightful government had sought to do so, but felt that the situation in Haven at the time did not permit further selling of Etarosi land."

Mr. Novalis was undoubtedly referring to the hostile reaction of Ilek-Vaad when the government of Etaros decided to sell large parcels of land to Menelmacar. The saber-rattling nation declared that such action was inhumane and illegal, and attempted to blockade Luín Anarórë (Etarosi Haven), thus forcing a multilateral conference on Unity Island, a Non-Democratic Alliance (NDA) territory. The situation was then deemed too unstable to consider a continuation of selling lands.

When asked how much land would be sold to Knootoss, Mr. Novalis replied, "We know for certain that Hvittsted will be sold to the DDR. Any other sales have not been discussed."

The sale of land in Etarosi Haven has been speculated to be a slow, transitional movement of the government in Orbitas Enosti to cut back on expenses in Etarosi territories. Some have suggested that the government intends to sell all the land eventually, but that rumor has been dispelled by key officials. They have called Etarosi Haven an important, "political, economic, and social asset to the Erasati Republican Federation." The ERF is a new term coined by the government to represent Etaros proper and all of its territories.

There have also been rumors in the capital that the Kasparov Administration seeks to acquire more territories, some possibly off-world. The Adminstration has declined comment.

Tax cuts, reform proving to be beneficial to Kasparov

ILDANOR -- Today the government released a new report, proclaiming that the tax cuts undertaken by Eratis Kasparov and his coalition government have proven to be "extremely beneficial" in spurring the economy and raising the value of the Etarosi Credit.

Recent trading on the NEX (National Etarosi Stock Exchange, based in Orbitas Enosti) has shown substantial improvements for Etarosi companies that hold investments in construction, infrastructure, and the IT sector. These companies are booming due to the reconstruction efforts ongoing in Etaros, as well as renovation and renewal projects happening abroad in Etarosi Haven. In the past three weeks, the NEX has documented a steady rise in investment, and spending is also increasing.

Even the Etarosi Credit has surpassed the Menelmacari Credit, which was once the standard of economic achievement for the Erasati Republic. The EC has broken a record and for the first time in history, has surpassed the Knootian Euro.

The economic outlook for the nation is looking stronger than ever, and with government efforts to limit and eliminate corruption within, more Etarosi have begun to have faith in the system. Lower taxes and a bright future are setting the tone for an even more bustling economy. Significant trade relationships that continue to grow daily are also to blame for the very good news.

Several ventures already being sought by the government in the areas of further increased trade are the nations of the Concordat and of Haven. A few corporations have professed an interest in Mars and Venus as off-world sites of operation. Even the Dominion's Machiavelli Station is receiving new attention, and the government has restated the Etarosi desire to maintain itself as a member of the Trade Network Association.
