Xanthal

The Socialist Republic of Xanthal surprised the international community today as its executive branch voted to terminate the country's membership in the Temporal Accord, which it has claimed membership in since its founding in 2954. The current government aquired the association from one of its four predecessor states, the Republic of Mirfak; which joined the Temporal Accord in 2808 in response to threats from several technologically-advanced galactic powers. Though neither Mirfak nor Xanthal has ever posessed appreciable temporal technology, the union was considered a security measure and retained for that purpose. However, the recent shift in Alphin philosophy against extended unions with groups often acting contrary to Xanthalian interest has placed many long-standing relationships in jeopardy. Last year, the Xanthalian Council annulled the nation's diplomatic relationship with the planet of Wysteria. With this recent move, the Republic's continued membership in the Extra Solar Union of Systems has also been called into question. Now condemned by the Lanalphini, the Temporal Accord will appear before the Council as early as December standard time for re-approval. If a majority of the legislative body votes to abolish the Accord, Xanthal's obligation to the treaty will be broken.
It is unclear now what the next step for the Republic will be on the international stage, but Second Lanlphin Eiko Oishi provided a clue in her public commentary on the recent vote. "The Socialist Republic can not and will not forsake its role in the international community, and we will not compromise national security by acting without allies. I stress however that this administration will not stand by and bow to the continuance of international obligations harmful to the state." The statement was a blow to more liberal internationalists who have continually criticized Charles Lawrence, who entered office last year as the Nationalist Collectivization Party candidate, for blocking progress on a number of diplomatic efforts. Lawrence has hailed the end of the Wysterian Union and Temporal Accord as steps away from "mindless compliance" with harmful international law and pledged to continue working for the Republic's seperation from the ESUS, an alliance he has called morally corrupt and self-defeating.
In a move against the trend however, Lanalphini Omsai and Oishi followed the vote against the Temporal Accord by moving for and approving an executive resolution to pursue relations with the galactic faction of the Humankind Empire Abh, an action opposed by Lanalphin Lawrence. Though public focus has been elsewhere, some analysts believe that Xanthal could potentially seal a friendship or even enter into alliance with the Abh nation if diplomatic meetings approved by the resolution go forward.
