Day 7: August 25, 2519
From a helicopter hovering over the ruins of Parliament Square, CGP Plaza, Greater Los Angeles
Bright phosphorescent halogen lights panned over the ruins of what had only been hours ago the tallest building in the Californian Federation, as well as the headquarters of the nation's government. As helicopters hovered over the ruins, their downdraft causing clouds of soot, flakes of burnt or burning papers and concrete dust to swirl around their rotor blades giving an almost surreal effect to the whole thing... in the background on KRWN News, Reporter Alex Royce was summing up the days news.
"Within hours of the building's collapse from what had been deemed a terrorist act by the Federalists in retaliation for their party being outlawed for the recent string of attacks and assasassinations, two leaders emerged from the chaos to stake their claim on the Californian Presidency... one being Vice President Jennifer A. Jourgensen who has served as under both Devnostraeva and Vassaretti Administrations, and the second being Lindsey Anne DeWinter, who has emerged rallying the support of the Californian people as the leader of the Californian Nationalist Party which prior to this attack was an unheard of and virtually non-existant political party with little to no representation in the Californian Parliament... Again, search efforts are still being made by the National Guard, Police and Medics who are on the scene as they are trying to locate President Alexa Sharon Vassaretti, whom we believe to be among the unfortunates who have perished in this brazen act. If the inevitable and expected news comes in that she has perished we will be the first to inform you. This is Alex Royce of KRWN News."
Aboard the BBGN-4/CFV California Super Battleship.
Sandra turned off the commscreen with her remote control, and looked over her shoulder. "See babe. They all think you're dead, and we're going to keep them thinking that. Unfortunately what Miss DeWinter doesn't know... is that you're far from dead, we're going to have to do something... because if you are seen its going to tip off Lindsey DeWinter and then she'll really want you dead.
Hours later, half a mile underneath the ruins of the CGP Executive Tower 1.
Unbeknownst to the Californian public a hardened bunker lay half a mile beneath the ruins of the Californian Government Plaza, this was built prior to construction at what was covered up as a new station for a light rail system being brought in to replace the old Metro Rail, of course to please the public as always the light rail system was built at the same time to coincide with the construction of the bunker. When completed the bunker in 2012 the bunker had seven exits/entrances, one being a large elevator shaft that carried you to the lobby of CGP Executive Tower 1, and six others which are connected to the Trans-Cal Light Rail System but cannot be accessed by it without proper authority.
Getting here was a cinch, after taking one of the 'Restricted' Trains to the bunker escorted by security and personnel, Sandra and Sharon went to the bunker after spending the evening together. Sharon and Sandra had come to the painful agreement that she would be cryogenically frozen, the whole day had been spent in preparations, having the medical personnel there, injections, and checkups before she was allowed to spend her last few hours with Sandra. After going to a room for some privacy, Sharon waited until the door was closed and the security detail left them alone before Sharon embraced Sandra. "I am so sorry for what was said earlier, I have always know that you would never bring me harm, I just hope that when they 'thaw' me that you will still be around. Sandra gave her a brief kiss on the lips before smiling "Sharon... Alexa, my darling... I cannot die, I am an immortal, I am in full control of my life. Only I can choose when I wish to die... because of you it may be never... I only hope that you may still hold some of the love we once had" Sharon embraced her crying... "I am so afraid..." Sandra smiled and began running her hand through Sharon's blonde hair "I know... I know... but please if we are to pull this off we must be brave."
Hours later Sharon and Sandra met back in the cryogenesis room so that Sharon can be frozen. The doctors sat Sharon back on the bed and began to attach the nodes and insert the intravenuous needles, while other doctors were in the background entering the duration of time for her to be frozen. Sharon looked up into the eyes of Sandra with a mirthful smile "See you in the year 2579" Sandra smiled back and bent down to kiss her "Don't worry, you're in the hands of great doctors." Sharon nodded "What about Lindsey DeWinter?" Sandra frowned "You leave that to me... I am going to take care of that bitch. By the way... we're going to need a blood sample... something we can use to create a clone of you... we're going to clone you, kill the clone — as much as I hate having to... that way they have physical proof that you're dead. What do you think?" Sharon looked up at her lover in surprise "That... that's — brilliant!" Sandra smiled "I know..." before kissing her one last time. "Time to go to sleep" Sharon bowed her head forward as the doctor attached the breathing apparatus so she'd be able to breathe while in suspended animation, afterwards she sat back and watched as the glass casing slid into place and pressurized, she smiled with tears running from her eyes as the case filled with warm water until she was entirely underwater. Seconds later a blue crystal was dropped in from the top, Sharon watched as the crystal dropped to the bottom and upon striking began turning the water inside the container to ice. Sandra watched until her vital signs registered as being in suspended animation and then left with her security detail.
[i]Day 8: August 26, 2519
Nighttime. Downtown Greater Los Angeles
Crowds gathered around the ruins of the Californian Government Plaza, some of them standing around were caked in dust, dirt and blood... from the scene it was impossible to tell if the blood belonged to them or the victims being pulled from the wreckage. Throngs of rescuers, police, medics and those who had been helping to find survivors and those who had perished were standing around as a voice could be heard over loudspeaker... at first it was hard to make out the words, but after the second and third times it was heard everyone around had looked as if the end of the world had hit them. Speaking from atop a mound of smoking rubble a gritty, dirtcaked medic had taken off his hardhat with one hand covering his chest and declaring it again louder over the bullhorn "Again, it is my regret to inform you that we have indeed found the body of President Alexa Sharon Vassaretti. It saddens me to tell you all that she is deceased." By this time news reporters were on the scene with cameras, microphones and pads of paper, one reporter jammed her microphone into the face of one of the rescue workers "So having learned of the death of our president in this most brazen of acts how do you feel?" the man looked into the camera and gave a wistful "To hell with you!" before walking away from the camera. By now KRWN News Reporter Alex Royce was on the scene and was watching as a flag draped stretcher of former President Sharon Vassaretti was carried down from the debris and into a waiting ambulance. "This is just unreal... this is like something you would see out of a movie, not something you would see of expect to happen to you... Ladies and Gentlemen of California just minutes ago the deceased body of President Alexa Sharon Vassaretti was found in the ruins of what was formerly the Californian Government Plaza's Executive Tower One, her body is being taken to a mortuary here in Los Angeles for preparation for her burial. Again for those of you with us, Our President Alexa Sharon Vassaretti has been found dead in the ruins of the Californian Capital Building. Godspeed Alexa." Displayed on the screen was a recent picture of President Vassaretti with September 18, 2477 — August 24, 2519.
Day 9: August 27, 2519
Downtown Greater Los Angeles, Los Angeles SAR — CSDSF.
Jennifer A. Jourgensen stood behind the podium situated in the middle of Parliament Square, from first glance one couldn't tell that the debris had been cleared away from the area until one noticed the slabs of broken concrete, twisted steel beams and pulverized pieces of marble and plaster cluttering the area around the cobalt blue brick pavement of Parliament Square. She took a minute to look out over the crowd that had gathered there before speaking "Ladies and Gentlemen, it is with great sorrow that I stand before you today. By now all of you know now that Alexa Sharon Vassaretti, our President has been killed — which brings us to this event. As the Senior Vice-President under the Vassaretti Administration it is with great sorrow that with her death, a vacancy for the position of President has opened, and being the next in command... I am the one to fill that vacancy. Fitting it should be that I am sworn in to office here on this very spot — however, I would like to tell you all that my first act after being sworn into office is to dedicate this government complex a new name... From this day forward this area will be known as the Alexa S. Vassaretti Government Plaza. Granted even now, designs for the new government plaza are being made — once this area has been cleared of the debris and the ruins of these once magnificent buildings, a new beginning will arise for this area."
The Speaker Of Parliament approached her and spoke loudly "Do you solemnly swear that you will faithfully execute the Office of the President of the Californian Sovereign Federation, and will to the best of your ability perserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the Californian Sovereign Federation. Do you also swear with unwavering determination that you will to the best of your abilities defend the abundant freedoms, rights, and interests of all of the population living within the Californian Sovereign Federation." Vice President Jennifer A. Jourgensen replied "I affirm all these things, so help me." The Speaker Of The Parliament walked to the microphone and replied "Ladies and Gentlemen. I would like to introduce to you, your new president Jennifer Angela Jourgensen!"
Speaker Of The Parliament, Andrew Waters III backed away from the podium as the barely sworn in President of the Californian Federation stepped up for a few more words. "Thank you all, again it is with much sorrow that we move forward."
Afterwards, Jennifer approached the podium and angled the microphone towards her. "Thank all of you for coming, with all of the chaos these last few weeks things it has been a little hard to perserve peace in the capital, with the recent string of attacks on our government officials from the 'para-military' group calling themselves the Revolutionary Alliance of Socialist California (RASC) we have had to call upon our armed forces to send in the Urban Military Special Operations Team (UMSO) to quell this insurrection and restore the peace and tranquility of our beautiful city so we can all pick up the pieces and rebuild.
As the President of this great and respected nation, I promise upon the blood of Alexa Vassaretti that this upon these ruins... will be standing a better, more gloriously new capital building. The area in our 'Capital District' will be rebuilt, and we will move forward!!!"
Day 10: August 28, 2519
Provisional Government Headquarters. Greater Los Angeles, Los Angeles SAR — CSDSF.
General Alex R. Sanderson walked into President Jourgensen's office holding a large thick folder and slapped the folder down on her desk with a slight smack. "I have some news you're going to like... and some you're not going to like so well." Jennifer looked up from her desk with a wry smile. "Is that so? What is it?" General Sanderson unfolded the envelope and brought out reconaissance reports and aerial photographs. "It appears that we have found out where the Federalists are all hiding... it also seems that they have grouped up with several of our other domestic enemies and the Revolutionary Alliance of Socialist California. We have the Texan Liberation Front, the Utahn Liberation Front, the Federalist Army, the United Democratic Army of California, and the Anti-Nationalist Army for Revolution in California also known by the popular acronym ANARC, and the Soldiers for the American Reoccupation of California (SARC). The best part is that our men and women in our Recon Department have found out that these guys are all hanging out with RASC, and we know where most if not all of RASC's outposts are."
Jennifer arched her eyebrow at these news. "Have you determined the location of RASC's headquarters?" General Sanderson smiled. "I thought you would never get around to that question. We have determined that their headquarters are based in Denver, Colorado and we have decided to eliminate this threat once and for all we should execute a decisive strike on all known locations. This should cause some major disruption in their organization and ability to cause us anymore harm, all I need is your authorization to move ahead and start coordinating mission planning and launching the attacks." Jennifer read looked over the aerial photographs and the reconaissance reports. "I know that there is going to be a shitstorm as far as the media goes after this is all done and over with, so I will have Public Relations handle that... you have my full authorization for this mission. Good luck, and godspeed."
Fifteen thousand feet above Greater Los Angeles, CIAF Capt. Marc Lewis sat flying his FV-144 Phoenix over the old South Central district banking southwest over Long Beach before turning north again. The day had been nothing but aerial exercises all day, he remembered the days during the Cold War between California and Menelmacari America when the Californian Imperial Air Force would send unarmed fighter planes dashing to the Inner-American Border (IAB) and back... he also remembered the shitstorm it caused in Californian-American relations as well.
Finally at around two-thirty in the afternoon CINCIAFCALWEST Gen. Andrew D. Beckinridge II wired in. "Attention!, Attention! All CIAF fighters and bombers within flying distance of Greater Los Angeles are to return to base and receive your orders for attack against RASC strongholds — I repeat — return to base for orders to attack RASC strongholds. Beckinridge, Out!" Capt. Lewis gave an impish smirk "Finally! Some action!"
Several hours later…
Mission Briefing — Armed Forces Bases throughout California.
General Beckinridge stood before a large black wall with a small wand-like control in his right hand. "Now, as all of you are aware, the President has issued orders to attack RASC strongholds throughout the nation." Gen. Beckinridge stood back and clicked a button and the screen lit up with a digital map of the Californian Federation. "Our Special Forces teams were sent out in search of RASC strongholds in hope that we would be able to locate the headquarters. We believe that this organization is like that of a dragon... if the head is severed the dragon will die. We have been unable to locate the headquarters of this terrorist faction as of yet. All Revolutionary Army of Socialist California strongholds are listed with the number of RASC outposts... here: Greater Los Angeles, California (3); Flagstaff, Arizona (2), Denver, Colorado (5); Dallas, Texas (7); Austin, Texas (6), El Paso, Texas (8); Amarillo, Texas (5); Laredo, Texas (5) Oklahoma City, Oklahoma (4); Salt Lake City, Utah (4); Ogden, Utah (3); St. George, Utah (2); Cedar City, Utah (3); Topeka, Kansas (3); Greater Kansas City, Kansas (5); Albaquerque, New Mexico (1), Santa Fe, New Mexico (3).
That gives us sixty-five targets tonight... I do not want to see any of you coming back to base unless you are reloading armament on your planes — got it?! Now get out there and rid California of this RASC scum!"
Over Ogden, Utah
First Lt. Andrew Barksdale took off from Hill Air Force Base just after four in the morning, climbing into the morning skies he should see the Ogden metro slowly waking up for another business day. Looking out over the distance he could see the cities of Layton, Bountiful and Salt Lake City, after looking at the aerial photographs he banked east and made a run over the Wasatch Mountains banking south after coming up on Mt. Ben Lomond he centered the fighter jet over Washington boulevard and slowly descended to ten thousand feet. Flying southward he identified the first building as the former American Canning Warehouse, long abandoned the RASC moved in without a word from anyone and had set up shop, 1st Lt. Barkdsale armed four of the dozen GBU-176 Hammerstrike laser guided bombs to drop on specific locations of the warehouse complex. After dropping the bombs 1st Lt. Barksdale banked west and flew over the railyard of the Union Pacific Railroad to another set of warehouses after targetting the main warehouse, and the others containing munitions and assorted other weapons the bombs were deployed. Banking east he turned eastward and located the third target as the former Wells Fargo building in the downtown area, flying now at three thousand feet above the ground those on the ground could swear they would have been able to reach out and touch the jet as it dropped all four of its laser guided bombs, two on the building itself, and the other two on the underground tunnels leading out of the building into the parking garage up 24th Street and to the hotel across the street. First Lt. Barksdale banked south towards Hill AFB when he started taking fire from the top of the former Federal Building and the old Municipal Building, after barrel rolling repeatedly to get through the thick AA fire he noticed a large battery on the ground near the Municipal Building firing two missiles at the former Federal Building and two more at the base of the Municipal Building. Before he should make it out of there he noticed a long thick grey trail of smoke coming towards him.
Grabbing the stick and pulling up he climbed to twenty-five thousand feet with the missiles still following him, banking east he dove making a run for the Ogden Canyon at two-thousand feet above the ground he flew through the canyon with his stomach taking all kinds of punishment from the split second turns, climbs and dives after making it to the Pineview Dam he launched a dozen chaff flares over the water and climbed to ten thousand feet. Flying westward again 1st Lt. Barksdale looked back to see the missile impact a flurry of chaff flares only to explode seconds later roughly twenty feet over the water.
On the ground those manning the AA missile and gun batteries started running as the laser guided bombs penetrated the roof of the Municipal Building and punched its way through every floor until it reached the third basement before detonating, sending a massive shockwave through the ground around the building. First Lt. Barksdale smirked as he hit his afterburners and rushed off towards Hill AFB to land and get some rest.
All across the Californian Federation every known RASC outpost was methodically annihilated after employing the Californian Imperial Air Force to undertake the job, by the evening newspapers across the nation were filled with grandiose rhetoric speaking for and against the attacks, some justifying them others denouncing them. That same day newly elected President Jennifer Jourgensen addressed the nation. "By now most of you have heard about the bombings have have occured all across the country... and again, by now most of you have heard that it was our own Air Force that cunducted the attacks. All of it is true, I repeat —all of it— is true. This morning I gave authorization to attack all known strongholds of the Revolutionary Alliance of Socialist California which has been considered a domestic terrorist organization within our borders. And, as such those who undertook the task of destroying the RASC network of outposts and communications centers have done a valuable duty to their nation by crippling if not destroying in its entirity RASC's organization and chain of command. As your President, I took an oath to defend the people of this nation from all enemies be they foreign or domestic... and aside from that oath, I believe that I personally have an obligation to protect those charged with the legislative, judicial and political operations of this nation. And because of that — because they have killed one of our greatest leaders, I have taken an oath to destroy this organization in its entirity and send a crystal-clear message to those who would dare dream of trying to sabotage this nation from the inside or out that we will not idly stand by and helplessly watch as our people are injured and killed. We will not stand to allow ourselves or any one citizen to be forced to fear the shadows of another, not while my administration is in office, we refuse to be subject to those who cannot seek to accomplish their means in a peaceful and civilized manner. Because of this California struck back... and if provoked in the same manner again, we will do it again, and again, and again... until the point sinks in. For all of you out there that would seek to accomplish your goals by terrorism I feel deeply sorry for you, sorry that you have the moral ineptitude to conduct attacks on innocent people... sorry that sooner or later, your fate will be that of meeting up with the Californian Imperial Armed Forces. And that your fate, like those of the RASC... and those domestic enemies we have been fighting against for so long that had grouped with RASC for stronger numbers will be a quick, surgical and decisive death. Courtesy of the CIAF."
Those in attendance stood proudly and gave their applause, as every news station sat feeding the recent Anti-Terrorism Speech to every comm-screen station across the nation. That night it was said that night was the most peaceful night in Los Angeles, as President Jourgensen's approval rating jumped higher than any present California had previously had, including those of the First Republic.
