Nationalist Leadership Elections

The Resurgent Dream
09-11-2005, 02:22
Following the recent removal of Thomas Baxter from leadership of the Nationalist Party, for reasons the party has not yet disclosed, internal party elections are being held to determine the new leader.

National Unity: This faction supports the universal use of English in all public business, national or principality, and the requirement that all immigrants speak English. They also support abolishing the right of principalities to have established churches. This faction is led by Sir Winston Powell.

National Character: This faction supports the creation of a theologically inclusive, established, national Protestant Church and the imposition of more selective and more discriminatory immigration laws. They're led by Gwydion Davies.

National Vision: This faction is the most ideological, claiming that Danaan political institutions and traditions are both superior and unique and that the Resurgent Dream has a great destiny in the world, over and above that of other powers. They're led by Sir Alfred Dashwood.

National Roots: This faction stresses greater emphasis on the principalities, with citizenship in a principality being a necessary stepping stone for national citizenship. They believe the principalities should do more to put state power behind their various distinct cultures and traditions. Their leader is Henri Calvin.

Henri Calvin would appear to be the least threatening to the outside world so, the fact that I have no business whatsoever participating in another nation's election aside, my/Xanthal's support goes to him.

OOC: Your nation isn't voting. You as a player are voting OOC on who you'd like to win. ICly, it's the other members of the Party who vote. And then the Party still has to stand against other parties in the national elections. For this, the party will vote in accordance with the poll though. For national elections, the poll is just one of several inputs I use to determine outcome.

Yes, yes. But the effect is the same. You po-tay-toe, I say... something else that closely resembles, either in pronunciation or appearance, a potato. And if you want to tell me I'm wrong or that my argument doesn't make sense let me assure you right now: you're wrong.

OOC: Can you imagine a political party with a factional system so formalised that they have formal names and everything? Wow, that party must be a real cesspit which never gets anything done but infigh... oh wait...

OOC: the universal use of English may be slightly opressive, but it will be good for business. Less fractional TRD, hurrah. ;)

OOC: Powell! Powell! he's our man! I like his Orthodox stance on abolishing the right of principalities to have established churches! YAY!

OOC:

Was I wrong in assuming that Powell would be abolishing the right for principalities to have their own established churches in favour of a High Kingdom wide established church, like the Church of Dana used to be, and like some awful Proddy denomination probably would be now?

OOC: Yes, you were wrong, since another leadership candidate has that position indicated. Also, as far as Sahor is concerned, Danaan Protestants are almost as evil as you idolotrous Papists anyway.

Bad for business. Confusing. Extra costs. Having to plaster PINK BUNNY COLA DOES NOT CAUSE HERPIES on the bottle in 99 languages, or having 99 separate bottles.

OOC: If anyone wants to hear any of the candidates on a specific issue, either to decide what to do in the poll or just because, go ahead and ask. If not, I'll close the poll soon. Calvin seems to have a good lead so far.

Henri Calvin smiled as he made his first address to his supporters and members of the press since becoming Leader of the Opposition mere hours ago.

"Ever since the tragic events of the Shattering, Danaans have been asking themselves one question: What defined us as a nation? Some will say that it is our race, our history, our ideals, our religion, and I cannot deny that these things are factors in our national character and identity. However, I cannot, as some would have me do in the name of unity, sacrifice the most essential basics of Danaan national character in favor of what are, in truth, superficial traits. That national essence is our nature as a balanced, federal system, built up from the principalities and not down from the Crown.

"I don’t mean to say that I think federalism is the way societies should be organized. I don’t deal with how societies should be organized in any abstract way. That’s the business of philosophers, philosophers like our current philosopher Queen Minerva and like other philosophers who’ve sought to impose ideology wholesale upon their countries, Robespierre, Lenin, Cromwell, Khomieni. Our current PM is certainly in well known company! I wouldn’t call it good though.

"What we need in this country is politicians willing to serve the nation, not ideals; real people, not abstractions. I know the people in our communities. They’re not disembodied Danaan citizens with different conceptions of the good, much less so-called ‘citizens of the world’. They’re real men and women, each of whom has a definite vocation, a definite community, a definite heritage, and a definite faith. They have real, concrete lives that require real concrete answers. That’s what the Nationalist Party is going to give them. That’s what we’re about.

"People don’t start off as Danaan citizens. First they are members of a family. Then a neighborhood, then a municipality, and then a principality. Only then are they Danaan citizens. These are the deep roots of our citizenship, a citizenship grounded thoroughly in the real structures of human life, all the way down to the family, a citizenship which is strongest when we promote family values and the rights of the principalities and not one size fits all solutions made in Tarana.

"There’s a lot of work to do in this party and in this country, work that begins in our own communities. How about grounding people in their communities from birth with real community schools instead of bussing them far from their homes in the name of diversity? By the way, that kind of thing is going to destroy diversity in our nation. If you don’t let cultures have their own communities, you can hardly keep distinct cultures. Unlike the liberals, I mean it when I say I’m for real diversity, the kind that thrives on maintaining a mosaic, not a melting pot which will turn all our people into one generic brand of ahistorical man. How about tax breaks for Danaan married couples who choose large families so that we can have a new, strong generation? How about limiting adoption to real families so that children want to grow up and start their own? There’s literally hundreds of things we can do to strengthen our deep sense of citizenship, our nation’s roots. All we have to do is to be willing to fight for our people. And we are! You’d better believe that we are. We already have a plurality and we’re going to fight for every last vote until we cross the line into a majority."

He grinned as he finished. "Do we have any questions?"
