Predictions

Hans Kobechien looked towards the crowd, smiling a bit, and passing what he was going to say, through his head, one more time. The press was convering upon the small studio, waiting for what he would say. Kobechien would always go down in history as one of the leaders in the sportsworld within The Macabees, since he was leading the first national hockey team the year the first national football team was playing in their first World Cup and their first and only Baptism of Fire. Not only that, but the Empire had just hosted the first International Futsal Tournament. Next to Kobechien sat Keitel Xier, hopefully the star of the team if his training was a direct influence on his in game success. He too prepared for the questions to come.

The first string was given by the Fedala International, preparing for their newest news release on the day's newspaper cover. The reporter stood and asked,"What are your predictions for Vilita?"

Kobechien sat silent for a moment, thinking over his words, and then he responded in kind,"Their sixteenth, although that's out of twenty-eight, we can't say much since we aren't even on the scoring roster yet. With our utter lack of international hockey I can only assume that it's going to be a loss, but the same applies to our football team - the experience willl be invaluable."

"Casari?" The reporter continued. Kobechien nodded and again responded, Their supposedly a better team than Vilita, if one can go by scoring, and so the same is supposed from them. Indeed, I would suspect that everyone except Tonissia, and even them, would give us quite a wooping this year; but that will only give us more motivation to do better next year. Our goal isn't to succeed, it's to gain experience for us to become a major contestant in the years to come, although, that doesn't mean we'll try our best."

The reporter thanked him and then sat down, prompting the host of other reporters to raise their hands as well and Kobechien pointed to one. She asked,[i]"What of a national hockey league?"

Kobechien nodded and said,"Well, true enough, we've never had a national hockey team, and all these players have come from teams that have had to pay themselves and organize between themselves, as opposed to an organized central type of thing, but I think that if we show promise here it isn't farfetched to suspect a rising national league?"

With that, Kobechien rose and waved the press off as he turned away, with his player, and headed somewhere else...

Oft-used threat of ninjas continues to fail to manifest itself

It took a long time, but once again we're back for another swing at the Cherry Cup. Also, somehow, we managed to be ranked 4th, which gives us a halfway decent shot at qualification.

Once again, the team will be lead by Coach Lobo, possibly because noone else in their right mind would be willing to lead the motley crew of drunks Casari kicks out the door to play in the Cherry Cup each iteration.

Bob the Random Drunk, starting last year as a supporting player, quickly became the core of the last Cherry Cup team and was dragged out of the bar with the promise of a sixer per game he plays.

At least there will be another year of mediocre results and an early fall. Either way, all 5000 people intending to go to games are excited.

Rayzors Up For Title Defence (Again)
"We're ba-ack To kick your ass-es!" shout Dwarves

Does being the only nation in the History to win the Don Cherry Cup four times hang a heavy burden on our Dwarven sport heroes? Of course not, they're used to having to live up to the deeds of old, its only natural.

Haztarr returns to coach his team once more the the Title, along with his Captain and Star-Winger Thorin Nibin, the ever-fragrant transsexual Thyria (formerly Thror) Honnhirrim, fattest goalie ever Grimcrag Torinzahar and a whole host of characters just waiting to be explored.

NMS fans support hockey hero

NEW MONTREAL - With the Habitants, our newly renamed and re-jerseyed national hockey team, about to take the ice for an ass-whuppin of the highest order, the attention and support of NMS hockey fans turns once again to Bob the Random Drunk, Casarian forward and popular national figure.

"Not like we got anyone worth cheerin' for over here," said Jean Pierrot, a local fan. "So we might as well support Bob, who is truly the common man's hockey player.

Bob was not available for comment, as he was passed out once again after emptying eight longnecks he found in some random person's backyard.

The Oliverrian Hockey Association is happy about the news!!

As they just received note that Oliverry and Hockey Canada, their communists co-hosts, will host Cherry Cup 17. Some administrative changes has been done:

- Frank Dubé retired from his position of OHA's president and got replaced by Johnathan Blue. For those who don't remember, he was the Oliverrian coach from CC8 to CC13. He was the coach who won the cup IN Oliverry(beating the Starblaydian team 4-0 :p )

- Blue's first decision was to fire Julien Lacroix. Sure, he only got to coach one cup, but, with his poor performances in both Cherry Cup 16 and Oliverry Cup I, he got fired. Instead, Blue called one of his hockey-lover friends to coach. Olivier Turcotte, one of the several presidents of the republic and the last emperor, got the job.

Here's now the Cherry Cup 17 roster, presented by Pepsioli. The first cup since Cherry Cup 13 that professionals are represented:

Goalies:
Jean-Bertrand Bouchard
Jules Dubois

Defensemen pairings
Pair 1: Jean Normand - Denis Richard
Pair 2: Ben Valois - Chris Lavoie
Pair 3: Mario Francois - Xavier Denis
7th Defense: Samuel Youri

Forward lines

Line 2: Joseph Collard - Narcisse Michaud - Maxime Aubry
Line 3: Emmanuel Trudeau - Laurent Pasteur - Justin Meunier

10th Forward: Nicolas Royer
11th Forward: Serge Thibault

Coach: Olivier Turcotte
Asst Coach: Henri Voisin

So, we wish good luck to everyone(excepted our rivals, naturally :p )

Hmmmm... and what would be the grounds for this preference?

On the grounds of the piss-poor CC you hosted? I'm sure I'm not the only one in my group would like Oli to do it. Again, no offence, but I'm not confident in you doing (any hosting for that matter, but since that's not possible just my group).

Despite alligations of bad hosting, Fmjphoenix supports being hosted by Hockey Canada. We think that anyone should be able to have a chance to prove that they can do it right. We look forward to playing in the cold confines of the Canuks.

Tonissia 0 1 0 0 1 2 -1

Group D faced off in the frozen wastes of Hockey Canada today and looked like it would be a pretty tight group. Casari managed to pull out a victory over Tonissia, and will be trying for their second straight win against Vilita tomorrow. Chicanada mustered a 3-2 win over The Macabees, mac looks like a dark horse in this group. Vilita just did their own thing and came up big.

Queen Jaq is looking down on us from her ice fortress thingy and smiling with the 7-4 win over the evil World Cup hosts (that'll teach you to have me tie Spaam! j/k). The Gilf States met with another "The" and earned the title "The" with a convincing 3-1 win over the former Cherry Cup champions. Squornshelous just did his losing thing and lost so bad that it didn't deserve numbers.

Group F:

What happened here? Fmjphoenix actually lost to a newcomer team? Has the world gone kooky? Why have I started ssaying "kooky"? Formal Dances waltzed over Daistallia 2104 with a one goal victory making things seem sweet for the ballroom-battlers. Liverpool England's game wasn't scorinated due to questionable hosting and preferences.

Leadoff Win in Cherry Cup leads to overoptimistic optimism
Team expected to crash to earth shortly

A leadoff win against Tonissia has caused many Casarans to tune out their abyssmal showing in the World Cup and focus on Hockey until the Hockey team loses.

"It's hard to get Casarans to watch anything with any sort of consistancy. Especally so when we usually choke horribly."

The next game for Casari Features World #8 Vilita. Most knowledgable reporters are predicting a tie or a win, but the people remain skeptical.

"They'll choke. They always choke." A fan said.

However, the mood is much higher around the Casaran Hockey Federation headquarters for once. "We'll show those freedom-hating communists at the CSA what for when we finally manage to outdraw them for games and beat them in the TV ratings. Especally with the Soccer team looking as entirely horrible as it is this year."

Red Storm Steal First Match against Regional Ally.

In the Red Storm's return to the Cherry Cup after two years of absence, the team pulled it together to defeat New Montreal States, a regional ally, 4-3. A victory at this point was unexpected due to the long period of time where Euroslavia didn't participate in any Cups; but the team pulled together and bested their opponents.

"There's no doubt that New Montreal States was a tough opponent. There's no way to get around that, but our team seemed to pull together under the pressure of returning after such a long absence. This victory just goes to show that we haven't lost our competitive attitudes, our good spirit, and our talent in this Cup. We certainly are happy to have achieved a victory, all in good manner though, seeing as New Montreal States is a nation that we would consider ourselves close to. We hope to see them give it their all in our next match together. After all, we'll be in their territory next time, and we all know that the crowd really does affect your gameplay. Having your supporters in the stands, cheering you on no matter what is a definite confidence booster."

In the last Cherry Cup, the Red Storm were drawn together with Tanah Burung and Iansisle in which the Red Storm lost to both teams. Perhaps some sort of rivalry has been established, and the team is looking for its revenge? There's only one way to find out.

The Red Storm's next opponent is Shadowfear, which is a team that Euroslavia has never encountered before, but one that it cannot underestimate.

"The match is in Shadowfear, so we really don't know what to expect from their team or their fans. All we can do is go in there with confidence and play as well as we did this time around, except for a little better defense which I'm hoping to work on with the players in our break. We most certainly cannot allow three goals in all of our matches, because we can't always depend on our offense to win, like in our last match."

HABS FALL SHORT AGAINST EUROSLAVIA

"They earned that win," is general consensus

EUROSLAVIA - After a spirited performance against regional ally Euroslavia, the NMS Habs fell 4-3 when a late rally fell short of tying up the match. The Habs, having only two matches in international competition to show for being in Cherry Cup 16 (owing to some original scheduling on behalf of the hosts), have a long way to go to have any chance of advancing, or even bettering themselves for the next Cup.

"The Red Storm might have been away for a while, but so were we, and we've got a bit of a ways ahead of us," said left wing Rob Redmond. "They earned tonight's win, and we look forward to hosting them in New Montreal for the rematch."

Habs right wing Jake Morris opened the scoring early in the first period, converting a pass from behind the net by center Martin Prudhomme. Euroslavia quickly evened the score, and the period ended at 1-all.

The Red Storm struck hard during the second period, picking up two quick goals to pull ahead 3-1 at the halfway point. Mathieu St-Jean, quiet throughout the Oliverry tournament, scored just before the period wound down to bring the game to 3-2 as the period ended.

The third period began much the same as the other two, this time with Mohamed al-Din scoring with an assist from Marco Bismarck on the power-play, and the Red Storm quickly pulling back ahead to bring the game to 4-3. The Habs tried to rally, but were stopped by a heroic effort by the Euroslavian keeper, who picked up 15 saves after the final goal was scored.

Druida fan #1: "I can't believe it! They're actually putting us on TV!"

Druida fan #2: "I know. But then, it is on the news, so don't get too excited."

Druida fan #1: "Well, yeah. But they had to do our make up and everything! That's all pretty impressive in my book!"

[The newscrew come over.]

Wilma Fox: "Hello there, I'm Wilma, you two guys ready, yeah?"

Druida fan #1: "Might as well be!"

Wilma Fox: "Well, they'll be coming over to us in about thirty seconds. Just answer the questions as clearly as you can, and you won't make a fool of yourself, OK?"

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Going out on TV all across the Druidish Lands...

Newsreader: "...as it gets to us. For now, though, back to Eric."

Eric Tree: "Well, there was intrigue at the ChemindusArena last night as a group calling themselves the Druida Lightning made a request for the floor in the arena to be completely frozen over. With more, here's Wilma Fox."

Wilma Fox: "It seems odd, doesn't it? Not the fact that a minority sport is taking over one of our national sporting arenas. That's quite normal. What isn't normal though, is to request that the arena be completely frozen over for the sport to take place upon. But that's the request being made by a group of hockey players. With me are two of the teams supporters, if I could start with you, why can't your team play hockey on grass like the rest of us?"

Druida fan #1: "Hockey isn't played on grass in the rest of the world any more. They play on ice."

Wilma Fox: "Really?"

Druida fan #1: "Oh yeah. Just look at our two northern neighbours, Oliverry and Hockey Canada. If the Druida team wins its qualifying group, that's where the finals will be played."

Wilma Fox: "Oh. And how many people go to watch? Is it into the hundreds?"

Druida fan #1: "Well, most games get thousands going to them."

Wilma Fox: "He's joking, right?"

Druida fan #2: "Oh, no. The Cherry Cup, which is like our version of the World Cup, attracts thousands of fans from around the world. But an international hockey match has never taken place in Druida before."

Wilma Fox: "And how many will you be expecting to turn up to watch your team tomorrow against... is it Kragburg?"

Druida fan #2: "It is. And, considering Kragsburg aren't really much of a major force in the hockey world, so there won't be much away support... maybe... about one?"

Wilma Fox: "One?"

Druida fan #2: "Yeah. One."

Wilma Fox: "Not thousands?"

Druida fan #2: "No. Just one."

Wilma Fox: "But come on. There must be at least two! There's two of you, for a start."

Druida fan #2: "Well, normally the case would be that Druida do only get two fans, but my friend Trevor here has a very important dental appointment. You see, he tried leaving his teeth so that they would go the same yellow and brown colour of our beloved team, but the pain has gotten too much for him."

Wilma Fox: "Oh. That's... er... lovely. Finally, it says here that you played in Milchama in your last match. How did that one go?"

Druida fan #2: "We won 5-2, and are top of the group with Bettia."

Wilma Fox: "OK, with that, it's back to the studio."

The Casari Broadcasting Alliance Presents
Casaran Sports Report

Are the hopes for all Casaran Sports going downhill?

Should we follow the suggestions of the weaker among us, that sport money go to scientific research?

Obviously, No. But the situation still is dire.

The Latest Casaran Sports loss, Hockey to Vilita, has the morale of the hardcore sports fans at an all time low. "We just don't understand it! How can we keep constantly losing..." One brave fan said before curling up in a corner with their beer and crying.

Casari's constant losing has managed to leak into the Cherry Cup, putting them tied with 2 points with 6 games to go, 5 of them against teams we should have a decided advantage against.

"It's a temporary setback, but not a total one." The coach said to the media.

However, when we asked fans, they had widely varied comments

Fan 1: "It's clear we suck at everything. The only joy we can get out of sports are the hilarous scorelines that come in for other teams."

Fan 2: (While spraypainting "Karela = SATAN" on his crappy looking compact) "Well, you have to look at it phases. We're just hitting a tough stage in our development. We'll bounce back soon, pick up points in whatever we happen to acutally be in and pull through."

Fan 3: "Well... I did have a good cry over it earlier, but I feel better... sports isn't everything, you know..."

Fan 4: "My ass sports isn't everything. If we don't show up someone important soon we'll look like absolute fools."

As you can see, sentiment across Casari is clearly divided. But nothing will stop the competitions we're in now. A bye tomorrow will lead us headlong into Casari @ Chicanada.

Now, to the World cup...

Red Storm Steal Another Win

Shadowfear: 3 - Euroslavia: 4
After another match, the Red Storm defeated Shadowfear, mimicking the previous score of a 4-3 victory. Despite the Red Storm's defense not being where it should be, the offense has been pulling the team through the game. This is going to have to change if Euroslavia has any chance at taking first place in the Group, especially against Iansisle and Tanah Burung, of whom the Red Storm have gone against in previous Cherry Cups. Euroslavia has scored two victories and the fans back at home are going wild over the success of the Red Storms' return to the Cherry Cup.

"We never expected our team to be sitting in first place at this point. I realize it's only been two games, but we've won both of them. If we can carry our momentum from this game to our next match against Iansisle, we may have a chance at upsetting them. If we can score one victory against Iansisle and Tanah Burung, I think we'll be a pretty good challenge for first place with the possibility of us moving on to the next round." spoke Thomas Gold, a season ticketholder of the Red Storm.

The next match against Iansisle is at home, so the home crowd advantage will definitely come into play. If the Euroslavian fans can keep as cheerful as they have been, especially against New Montreal States, then they may have a chance at throwing Iansisle off of their groove and stealing a tie or a victory out of this one.

The fans and the team alike are hoping that New Montreal States and Shadowfear can pull off a few upset victories against the other teams within Group A. If this can occur, the Red Storm will have a better chance at becoming the 'Cinderella' of the Group.

Undefeated after Three; First Place Team

The Euroslavia Red Storm have accomplished something that no Euroslavia Cherry Cup team has ever accomplished before, three victories in a row from the start of the season. Currently, the Red Storm sit atop Group A as the team with the most victories and points. Fans all across Euroslavia have been throwing together celebrations on the unexpected success of the Red Storm, whom has become the most popular sports team in a heartbeat. They defeated Iansisle, of whom was the favorite to win by most of the sports critics in Euroslavia. The score of the match was 4-3, yet again.

Their recent defeat of Iansisle has shown not only Group A, but the entire Cherry Cup that it's return is serious, and that it has a lot to show to the rest of the teams. At the same time though, the Red Storm have remained silent. These victories over teams that were predicted to defeat them have not inflated their ego, and they remain concentrated and prepared for their next match against Tanah Burung, one of the better teams in the Cherry Cup. The only thing they can do is stay as prepared as they have been, and play in cooperation as much as they have been in the past three games. A victory against Tanah Burung will proove that Euroslavia is not a bust.

With Euroslavia and Shadowfear being the only teams in their Group to play three matches, the only thing that the Red Storm worry about is the fact that the rest of the teams have received time to rest and have regained strength that they may have lost. The Red Storm will not receive a break from their matches until the 5th Round of matches, with New Montreal States being the next opponent after the break. This rest is well needed after these four matches in a row.

One thing that the team will continue to work on is their defense. They've given up three goals every match, and in the event that the Red Storm advanced to the next round of the Cherry Cup, they're going to need to change a few things if they're going to be a serious contender, especially against the likes of Starblaydia and some of the other 'hockey giants'.
Kaze Progressa

The Progressans have no idea how to play hockey. Their threats ring hollow after two defeats and the only question now is whether they will lose every match.

'Yes', according to 69% in a straw poll in Kaza Sports Square of fans settling down to watch some real hockey - The Mushroom Kingship v Kalallit Nunaat. 'These guys can play. Our guys can barely stay on their feet, or at least our defenders who have let in... how many is it now?'. 13 in two games is the answer (seven against Kalallit Nunaat, six against Squornshelous).

'We scored seven because their defensive players joined in every attack, no other reason for it apart from maybe luck,' said another fan. 'Why are we even trying?'

Victory!

In what seems a respite in the string of horrible luck in sports, The Macabee 'Imperials' seem to have done well in this last game against Tonissia, achieving a three to two victory, although still too close for comfort. This comes after a defeat against Chicanada, with ironically a reversed score, and a bipass yesterday. Perhaps that bipass allowed the team to better consolidate themselves to pull off this latest victory? Indeed, the tables seem to have reversed and the skies no longer grow back for Macabee sports, although it's doubted that the team will get far their Cherry Cup, nonetheless, hoping to do great their second time around.

As goalie Eric Niadin says,"We're extremely optimistic for this cherry cup, hoping to finish off well, but not exactly make it past the group stages. This will give us a springboard for the next cherry cup and hopefully we can show them who we are then."

Others don't seem as optimistic simply becuase ice hockey had never been a very loved sport within the Empire, and this is the first time any type of team was put together. Indeed, these individuals aren't even professional. They play in teams that have to organize themselves, with no official association to lead them, but they're showing who they are, and perhaps this victory against Tonissia will bring them one step closer towards having a league of their own within the Empire.

Milchama make good on threat beat team not named NMS

The Milchama Israelis made good on their for the Cherry Cup today as they beat a team not named New Montreal States (Bettia) 3-2. Coach Jean Perron said, "We won and that is what's important. Sure it came down to 3 goals in the third period including one on an empty netter but we won anyway. Now on to the game report."

1st Period: Bettia scores on the power play after Tal got a 4 minute double minor for cross checking. The goal came after the puck bounced off Gussin then right to the stick of an Israeli who shot the puck right to a Bettians stick and he scored to give them the lead 1-0. The Israelis sucked that period.
2nd Period: Bettia takes a 2-0 lead as Forward #2 deflects a shot from the Bettian blueline right into the net. The Israelis almost scored once but Horowitz's stick got stepped on.
3rd Period: The Israelis finally score their first goal 7 seconds in as Eddie Ravniaga scores on an empty because the keeper for the Bettians accidently forgot to come out for the third period start. That was just the beginning for the Israelis though as Eisenmann found Eisenmann wide open on the blue line and then Eisenmann deked through one defender and the goalie to tie the game at 2. Finally with 1 minute left in the game the Israelis took their first lead as some good play by Birbaer saw Frankel open in front of the net. Frankel missed the pass but George Pamir didn't and he scored to make it 3-2 Israelis.

Ooc: Why The Hell Wasn't This Announced In The Sign Up Thread????
Tanah Burung
08-11-2005, 05:30
Tanah Burung reporters arrive, somewhat "tired and emotional"

This reporter was thrilled to catch the tail end of the Cassowaries' 5-2 triumph over Les Habitants d'NMS. Truth be told, this reporter missed what was by all accounts a nail-biting, rollicking qualifying round due to a mix-up. First he thought the Cup had not yet started, then he checked with the Lance A. Comte Memorial Phone-Answering Service over in Kalaallit Nunaat, which assured him that no, the Cup certainly hadn't started, and finally he headed over to Starblaydia for a mug of ale while he waited for the Cup to start.

Well, this reporter discovered a nice new blend of HaggisLike Extra Stout, now with added iron, and woke up to see the crucial match with Euroslavia on a Starblaydi TV. When he could tear his eyes away from the dwarven ladies doing a strip-tease over on the bar. Or possibly dwarven men, it's so hard to tell. Had a swell time in the boudoir with one Hurrim Thurrim McMurrim, though, whatever gender it was.

Anyhoo, this reporter was quite impressed to hear that the Red Storm had managed to go 3-0, especially since Tanah Burung's occasionally beloved (and occasionlly despised) Cassowaries were at 2-1 after an unfortunate loss to Iansisle, no doubt connected somehow to dastardly tricks involving gnome DNA and ill-gotten spices. Why, this reporter thought it was entirely possible that the Cassowaries might be eliminated before he managed to get to wherever it was that the matches were taking place. And that would never do!

Fortunately, the Cassowaries managed the task rather handily, skating to a 5-0 win. A glorious victory for the toilers, comrades! Or something like that, Hurrim was telling this reporter all about the fact that hockey was the most proletarian of all sports. And she, or possibly he, was giving this reporter far too much tongue action for this reporter to have noticed which five Cassowaries notched goals. It msut have been five though, no one one this team would be so inegalitarian as to score more than one goal.

But as this reporter was saying, this reporter arrived jsut in time to see the 5-2 win which gave the Cassowaries the Group A title ahead of an idle Euroslavia. What a come-from-behind glorious day! The Cassowaries are certainly destined for either a repeat of their Cherry Cup-winning trip to Hockey Canada all those eyars ago, or maybe their mediocre performance in Oliverry even more years ago. If this reporter has read things right, the Cassowaries will advance along with group titlists Bettia and (oh dear lord no!) Starblaydia. And three other group winners to be determined. Wait, that's not divisible by four is it? Oh well, this reporter has never been good at math, and may still be a bit hung over.

Vive le Canada! Or qulque chose comme ça. French has never been this reporter's strong suit. This reporter, if he's honest, is still trying to work out what his strong suit might be. It ain't posting often, that's fer sure.
Iansisle
08-11-2005, 08:16
The potion took a longer time to brew than Ashlee Langdone had predicted. The living Gulls bumbled their way to a victory over Tanah Burung while Langdone attempted to locate the feather of a Cassowary.

He had originally attempted to use a quill pen lifted off gambling mogul Mau Slurp, before being informed that "Cassowary", despite all the assurances from Iansisle's bewildered Foreign Service, was not the proper term for people from Tanah Burung (the aberration risen by this spell proved very good at terrifying villagers but horrid at hockey). After consulting his tomes (Our Arcane Feathered Friends, So You Want to Turn Yourself into a Bird, eh?, and Ten Thousand Ways to Stew a Pigeon), Ashlee discovered that the cassowary was actually an ungainly flightless bird from Papa New Guinea and parts of Australia.

By the time he made this discovery and attained an actual cassowary feather, the Gulls had gone from mediocre to bad to worse, tying the New Montreal States and losing to Euroslavia and Shadowfear (who?). But the tides were about to turn!

Langdone strode up to the headstone, hardly noting the inscription reading "St Amour." Opening his spell book and sprinkling the first dose of his potion upon the ground, Langdone began to chant fell words. An unholy green light engulfed the graveyard, never at odds with the shadows but instead enhancing their bizarre tilt. The air itself was chilled and all sounds except for Langdone's grating voice ceased. And then a skeletal hand burst through the ground, fingers reaching for a nearby hockey stick.

-------------

The day started much like any other for Gulls starting forward Bob Q. Feckless. He was sitting alone in the dressing room, scratching his large, misshapen head as he attempted to remember how to tie his skates. He heard the click of a door and felt the temperature drop several degrees.

"H- hello?" he called.

"Robert Quincy Feckless?" replied a voice. Bob tried to see who it was, but it was as if a spot of darkness were moving across the well-lit dressing room.

"Um, yes?"

"I'd like you to meet a hero of yours. Robert, this is Martin St. Amour."

"But...that's impossible! St. Amour's been dead for years!" said Feckless, laughing in an attempt to relieve the tension. It didn't work: his laughter died in his mouth and came out as a dry rasp.

"Braaiiinss..." said the figure next to the original speaker, who, Feckless noted as the shadow moved over him, had no skin. "Braaaainsss.."

Feckless's scream died as soon as it began.

---------

The fans at the Iansisle - Tanah Burung rematch might notice something different about their team. The starting line still said it was Happenstance, Crumbum, and Feckless at forward and Molasses and Dullard on defense with Freepass in goal, but there was something different about the players. They all looked a good deal gaunter, for one thing. Their skin seemed to have been ripped from the bone and then sloppily reapplied (in this aspect, at least, they looked more like hockey players, except for the fact that some of them still had teeth).

Langdone himself had taken Dullard’s place at right defense. Through his bloody disguise, he glared at the mortal Cassowaries lining up against him. If Tanah Burung had had trouble against the group of misfits fielded by Iansisle before, wait until they met the most elite team of undead ever put together! Win or lose, one thing was certain: at the end of the day, this was one Iansisle team that would not go willingly into the graveyard!

Cassowaries terrified by Veryscarries!

This reporter arrived very very late indeed to this story, but don't tell my editor (too late - ed.).

It turns out that this year's Gulls -- the only team able to beat Tanah Burung so far, and hence by definition Evil -- are actually mindless, brain-gobbling zombies!

This reporter isn't joking -- he saw it with his own three eyes. (Did this reporter tell you about his third eye? No? Another time, maybe.) Yup. Zombies. Slithering, unspeakable things. Yeah, you get the picture.

What? You don't? OK, here a snapshot of Martin St. Amour:

http://j-walkblog.com/images/38108xe2D_w.jpg

Now, call me crazy, but that's more dental damage than most hockey players. Is it any wonder the Cassowaries, known for their fear of anythig supernatural, panicked and lost?

This reporter can assure all fans: Tanah Burung is undefeated against Living Teams.

PALADINS WAKE UP TO WORLD OF HURT

We looked like last week's poutine out there

OLIVERRY - Well, it happened again.

What with the start of World Cup 25, a massive attack of Calculus Demons (their number equal to the limit of 1/sinx as x approaches 0) followed by a bombardment of physics artillery (departing the cannon at a 35-degree angle at an initial velocity of 40 m/s how far will it go and what will be the maximum height AIEEEEEEEEEEEE will it EVER end?) and Madame Bovary screwing the brains out of any people left to pay attention (not to mention our grades in English), there has been very little attention paid to the Habs's mad free-fall through the ice-hockey world.

This despite the fact that we're theoretically a bunch of hockey-mad French Canadians and Anglos. Rah rah rah.

Hence, a brief summary of our hockey futility since we last looked, which was after the match against Euroslavia.

A bye. We launder our boxers and hope for a brighter tomorrow.

A 4-3 win over Shadowfear. A temporary, fleeting taste of victory avant le deluge.

5-5 against the Iansisle Gulls. We understand that they aren't quite the powerhouse they were during our first trip to the Cherry Cup, but we still feel good about ourselves.

5-2 down against Tanah Burung. Calisse.

And now what? Not the playoffs, I tell you that now.

Tanah Burung: 5 - Euroslavia: 0

The Red Storm came back to reality after their match against Tanah Burung, being utterly embarrassed at losing 5-0. Not only were they crushed, but their offense couldn't even manage to score a single goal. It was quite obvious that Tanah Burung's team was better. One of the major factors in this game could have been the Red Storm's confidence. After defeating New Montreal States, Shadowfear, and Iansisle, respectivelly, the victories may have gotten to the teams head. For anyone who watched the game, it seemed as if Euroslavia slacked off, and wasn't playing like the Group A winners it previously was. In order to restore itself to its former status, the team is going to need to pull off some decisive victories against New Montreal States, Shadowfear, and again in Iansisle, while trying to put up an attempt at defeating Tanah Burung.

After a day off from matches, the Red Storm are confident going into this match-up against New Montreal States.

"We have our confidence back, especially after our last match. It's games like those that could ruin your season, but the only thing you can do is bounce back from it, learn what you did wrong, and move on making sure you don't make the same mistake twice. Our match against New Montreal States is away, so we're going to have to factor in their fans to this match. We're definitely going to be seeing a tougher opponent then we seen in Arcadia. They're going to have the confidence of their home crowd, as well as the thirst for revenge after our 4-3 victory over them. Under-estimating them would be the biggest mistake of the season. Hell, they faired better against Tanah Burung than we did, so you really never know what could happen. We need to play our best game at all times, and hope for the best."

The Red Storm no longer have first place in Group A, meaning that they no longer hold the key to the next round of the Cherry Cup. Tanah Burung currently holds this position, and the team really needs to pull together and play better than their best for the rest of their scheduled matches. A bonus would be a few upsets here and there, and perhaps another Iansisle victory over Tanah Burung. Iansisle currently holds third place in Group A, and could prove to become the 'spoiler' for someone. Tanah Burung's only loss was against them, so perhaps they know of their team's weakness?

"Currently, we've been reviewing the tape of the Tanah Burung-Iansisle match, as well as our match against Tanah Burung. We're comparing exactly what was done and what we can do to counter their moves. It's quite obvious that their offense is very strong, but these tapes will give us a little more insight on a new strategy."

Until next time...

Random comments:
With Matchday 6, this cup enters in a very interesting phase. With 5 matchdays left, we had to expect some surprises. It also saw the first elminated team of the cup. The honors goes to... Jamee Gray. Druida took the lead in Group C, so, teams have to be careful about this. Starblaydia is the only undeafeated team and could secure a qualifying spot tomorrow.

Blades top table after 6 games

In a plesant suprise, the Fmjphoenix Blades are on top of their group in the Cherry Cup. With 10 goals scored from their last two games, the Blades had more than doubled their scored total. Keith Roneck has been the main scorer for the Blades, scoring two hattricks in the the last two games and having 10 of the Blades 19 goals. The main goal of the Blades is to get into the playoffs in hopes of meeting up with Starblaydia in the finals, whom the Blades beat before 2-1. Will it happen? Who knows, only time will tell.

Druida fan #1: "We've gotta win today!"

Druida fan #2: "Too right! Lose against Bettia, and it'll probably come down to goal difference, and theirs is waaaaay better than ours!"

Druida fan #1: "Don't you think it's nice though? Letting us use the ChemindusArena for our home games."

Druida fan #2: "It was nice. Until the Free Alcoholic Army flattenned it."

Druida fan #1: "Oh. So where are we playing today?"

Druida fan #2: "Druid Tribune. Eastern Druida is the only safe place in the country, now!"

Druida fan #1: "Oh."

The pair of them walk into a building marked "DTIR" and to the reception area.

Druida fan #2: "Two, please."

Reception girl: "Sorry. Sold out."

Druida fan #2: "Sold out? You sure?"

Reception girl: "You here for the hockey, yeah?"

Druida fan #2: "Yeah. We're the only two hockey fans in Druida."

Reception girl: "Well, you can't be. There's seven thousand people through there waiting for the match to start. Take a look if you like."

Druida fan #1: "Seven thousand? Heh, good one! Now can we go in?"

Reception girl: "Come on, I'll show you."

The pair of fans followed the reception girl along a corridor a little, before she opened a door on the right hand side.

Reception girl: "There you go. Not a single space left in the house!"

Druida fan #1: "But... we're the only two hockey fans in Druida!"

Reception girl: "Well, now you're not alone! Go on, we'll let you in. Talk hockey with some of your fellow enthusiasts before the game starts."

Druida fan #2: "No, I'm sure they don't really lie the game. They're probably just here to keep their spirits up after all that's gone on."

At that point, two Druida fans, decked out in the brown and yellow colours of the team, march past, talking about the benefits of playing different defensive lines.

Reception girl: "No, they seem to know what they're on about."

Druida fan #1: "Well... I can't say I've ever liked hockey anyway."

Druida fan #2: "Me neither. Always been more of a gridiron man, myself."

Reception girl: "But... I remember seeing you on the news. You're two of the biggest hockey supporters in the country."

Druida fan #1: "No. I think you must be getting us mixed up with someone else."

Druida fan #2: "Yes. We'd better be going now, hadn't we Trevor?"

Druida fan #1: "Yes, Trevor. We had."

And so the pair of them walked out of the building.

Druida fan #1: "They're not real fans, are they, Trevor?"

Druida fan #2: "Of course not. We'll be here long after they've disappeared back to their other sports."

And with that, they walked away, leaving their team to be beaten with only seven thousand in attendance. Not bitter in the slightest.

BANG!

In an instant, they were gone. crushed under one of the thousands of Dodgeball:Goliath balls that were being fired at will around Druida.

Rest in peace Druida fan #1 and Druida fan #2. Long live Druida fans #4-#7003!

The problem with calm, rational discussion on forums is that is usually makes the exponent of them look like they're an aloof, patronising ponce.

Yelling and insulting each other is always more fun. Bedsides, one boot up the jacksy when Oliverry next comes onto #sport and we'll have scores, no problem.

This is not a vote to cancel the cup because I don't want to take part in it. This is not about who likes who. This is about whether the hosts are fulfilling their responsibility to finish this in a timly fashion.

I'm seeing a contradiction here. You say you wish to cancel it, then you say that you don't.

It's called 'People Have Lives'. If they can't get to it, especially with now being the holidays, then people can wait a bit. It's not the end of the world.

If you weren't up for the responsibility, you should not have bid.

Euroslavia, please re-read the bolded portions of both. I didn't say anywhere that it wasn't a vote to cancel the cup period. Someone tried to claim that I was asking for a vote because I didn't want to participate. I said I was not. The vote was due to the hosts being unable to fulfill their duties. I am not the only one who sees it this way.

However, all this being said, due to the hostility from certain other posters, I will bid you all farewell. May you have the Cup you deserve.

A chill blizzard blew across the land. Sorcerers. Sister Hale Maria knew it must be sorcerers, dark wizards from some ill land with evil intent. Stopping her team from playing, just when they seemed set on their best campaign in decades. Too cold to even go outside. And it shouldn't storm like this, not at this time of year. She could almost smell the dark ritual being wrought by some rascal in some dungeon somewhere.

A curse.

She could taste it on the bitter chill wind. Dark magicks. The spirit of evil rabbits, perhaps (look at the bone structure on that one!. Or some other force from beyond the grave.

Well, it simply would not do. She stacked up the apparatus for exorcism. Candles. Mirrors. Musty old hymn books. Exorcism brand popcorn. Girdle. Nun's habit. Tennis racket. Chains. Condoms.

Wait. This wasn't the exorcism gear! Sister Maria sighed. Ah well. Fun for a winter's night, at any rate.

There wasn't exactly dancing in the streets, since most of the tropical Burungi people still thought of hockey more as a freak show than a sport. But there were a few smiles as the radio broadcast the news that the Cassowaries were through to the next round, overpowering Euroslavia, the group's only other real contender, by a rather remarkable 7-0.

On-ice action was closer than the lopsided scoreline would suggest, as the Phantoms managed 35 shots on goal to 41 for Tanah Burung in a wide-open match that saw both teams exchange enough end to end rushes that it looked, at times, like a very slippery basketball match. But Cassowary goalkeeper Martina (the pride of Loro Sae, rumoured to have been raised by seals) was a fortress between the pipes, stopping all chances cold.

"In fact we've decided to call her Cold Martina," said a moist and garrulous Sister Hale Maria, grinning maniacally after watching her team coast through to the playoff round. "Cold, cold, cold Martina. Brrr."

The nun's snores were interrupted by the telephone.

"Snorgumzzt? Huh?" Sister Hale Maria answered groggily.

"What? No, you didn't wake me. I was, uh, viewing game tapes." The Tanah Burung coach looked around the room. That had been quite a trip. The discarded bottles on the floor were beginnign to reek a little. She closed her eyes and tried not to think about her aching head.

"Three matches? Why didn't any wake-- um, i mean, interrupt me?" Seems it had been a longer loss of consciousness than usual.

"All of them? We lost all of them? So is it over?"

She put her head in her hands. Damnation.

"Really? So it doesn't matter that we lost three straight? Excellent! Tell the boys i'll meet them in the locker room. Um, after a shower, i mean."

Now, what ideas did she have on how to defeat Squornshelous? And how the hell did they manage to get into the playoffs?

In one of the many hotel rooms being used up in Northern Atlantian Oceania by the eight remaining teams in the 17th Cherry Cup, a group of Dwarves from Starblaydia, fresh from a 4-all draw with Vilita, sit lounging around in the way only Dwarves can.

"Yonder bookworm," yelled Thorin Nibin, the winningest Captain in Ice-Hockey, having lifted three Cherry Cups, "get ye nose outta that humie newspaper and come join us in a mug of ale!"

"Gah!" The Dwarf with his nose in the newspaper cursed under his breath.. "We be playing them queer Bettian folk in the Quarters."

"Huh?" Thorin was so confused he nearly stopped drinking. "That's football, laddie, the World Cup. Donnae be so silly, and grab ye some ale!"

"Ah'm nae joking, Thor," the Dwarf was nearly obscured by the broadsheet newspaper, hands and feet poking out from behind it, "Cherry Coup, Quarter-Finals. Starblaydia versus Bettia."

"We'll ah'll be buggered with a pickaxe." Thorin put down his ale. "Where's Dag?"

Dagnir Tumunzahar, brother to Zhorin, the well-known footballer. Dag was the Rayzor's goalie, and he had the room next door to...

"He's next door." Said the newspaper, or rather the Dwarf behind it, though the magical camera of roleplay had already told you that.

"DAAaa-AAAaag!" Thorin yelled.

"WHA-Aaat?" Through the wall a muffled reply came.

"C'MERE!"

"Kay"

"WHAT?" Thorin hadn't caught the reply. But soon the door to their room was barged open, the door handle making a dent in the wall as it slammed open.

"I said O-bloody-kay." Dagnir was not a Dwarf to be stirred at the best of times. "Whaddaya want?"

"Your Zhorin plays for the footy Cup team, doesnae he?"

"Aye."

"And they be playin Bettia," Thorin never was one for obtuse questions.

"Aye."

"In the Quarters?"

"Aye."

"Well, so be we, on the ice!"

"Aye. Ah know."

"Oh," Thorin put his beer down for a moment, "that's all."

"Gah." Dagnir cursed and stomped off, slamming the door behind him. One of the hinges broke, leaving the door only half-closed, half-hanging off its frame.

"I got another mention of Bettia here," said the newspaper, "the AOCAF team are playin in the Quarter-Finals in Bett..."

"Ah shuttit ye bastid!" Thorin found himself without a mug of ale in his hand, and the Dwarf reading his newspaper found himself with a strange alcoholic liquid covering him and his paragraphs.

Squornshelous wins Muchly

Ferrets not only win all three of their games, but destroy their second two opponents
After winning their first game of the second group stage 3-1 over Tanah Burung, who the Squornshelan media regards as one of international hockey's better teams, seeing as how they were victorious in the Squornshelan hosted Cherry Cup 6, the Ferrets went on to win their next two games by a combined score of 13-3, exending their unbeaten streak to 11 games, and their equally improbable winning streak to 7 games. Without a doubt, this is the best any Squornshelan hockey team has ever played, and we feel that the Ferrets have a real chance to pick up their first bit of Cherry Cup hardware. During this Cup, the only team that has played significantly better than Squornshelous is Starblaydia, who have the same overall record as the Ferrets, but have scored an astonishing 78 goals to this point. However, right now, the Ferrets' main concern is Tanah Burung, who have been playing pretty poorly, but should still not be underestimated. However, should Squornshelous win, they will move on to play the winner of the Hockey Canada-Liverpool England game. The setup looks pretty good for the Ferrets, as they defeated both of those teams by five goal margins. The other side of the bracket looks much more even, with Starblaydia not dominating their group as much as expected and giving up an average of 3 goals per game. This is as good a chance as the Ferrets have ever had to change the amazingly long string of bad luck they have ridden since Cherry Cup 8.

Parallel Tournaments

Ferrets and Pschychoes see very similar circumstances
The Squornshelous Ferrets have reached their first ever Cherry Cup Semifinal appearance by defeating Tanah Burung by a resounding 7-0. This lopsided score is the kind of thing that Squornshelans are used to, although having our team on the winning side is something new. The team moves on to play Oliverry, the hosts of the tournament.
In the World Cup, the Squornshelous Pschychoes have also reached the semifinal, this being their fourth showing there, but do not yet know which team they will be facing, either Starblaydia or Bettia

Squornshelous have now scored an impressive 56 goals, compared with only 22 goals allowed, and with the situation as it is, we may see a very rare feat occur in the next few weeks. We haven't checked our history books about this, but if Squornshelous can somehow find a way to keep winning on the field and on the ice, not only would Squornshelous have won their first international sports championships, but could be the first team to win simultaneous championships in Ice Hockey and Football. Much remains to be seen, but we all hope for the best.

Semis are overdue

In light of the last few Cherry Cups (9 to be exact), Hockey Canada has seen many nations surpass them in Hockey. Nations like Very Angry Rabbits, Spruitland, Robotopolis, and the dreaded Mushroom Kingship (ooooooooOOOoo!). But now it's Hockey Canada's turn to step into the spotlight and try and take a shot at the finals for the first time in Flyers History. Lets look at the Flyers's road to get here:

Preliminaries:
After a strong start, the Cherry Cup went on hiatus for the World Cup. But it's now back and will finish strongly.

Round Robin:
Hockey Canada didn't play very well in the round robin losing to both Squornshelous and Liverpool England. A win over Tanah Burung wasn't special seeing how they were the bitch of our group. (no offence TB).

Quarter-finals:
We managed to beat Liverpool England to make it into the semi-finals and it was a spirited match. Many fights in the Flyer fashion and the odd goal gave Hockey Canada the advance into the semis to play against Bettia.

Predictions:
Squornshelous vs Oliverry- Much as we'd like to see our fellow hosts advance through to the finals, we have this game too close to call. Squorn has been losing for years (like us) and will try to lose even more. French places have a tendancy to lose as well... battle of the losers anyone?

Hockey Canada vs Bettia- The Flyers are long overdue. But so is Bettia. And why am I using periods like this.? Both teams will be fighting hard for that final spot. Bettia sppears to want it more though.

Finals prediction: Squornshelous over Bettia 3-1
