Urbunus Postimus Victorinus wins landslide election

ELUSIA (Reuters) - In a landmark election Urbunus Postimus Victorinus, leader of the Praetoria Novus Social Democracy Party, or PNSDP, has won a huge majority in the Senate and will form Government.

Senator Victorinus pledged to respond ‘sensibly and wisely, instituting a policy of welfare reforms and increased funding to education and healthcare’ thanking the people for their choice.

Senator Saturnius Longinus Priscus, leader of the Liberal Democratic League of Praetoria Novus, or LDLPN, (which received the second highest amount of seats) and now fomer Provisional Prime Minister of the Republic, resigned from politics today. His resignation marks the end of an era for Praetoria Novian politics, which saw the longest period of continuous leadership in the history of the Republic and which resulted in the most sweeping Constitutional reforms ever undertaken by the Senate.

Senator Urbuns Postimus Victorinus was asked by Parliament in a full siting of the Senate today to form Government. He is expected to chose his cabinet later today.

Senator Diocletian Aelianus Galerius, leader of the (CRPPN, or Constitutional Republican Party of Praetoria Novus) congratulated the new Prime Minister on his result, as did new Opposition Leader Senator Constans Nepotian Julian.

HISTORIC RESULT

The elections have been historic for more than just the fact that it has seen the end of the leadership of the venerable former Prime Minister Saturnius Longinus Priscus. These are the first elections held after the new Constitution was adopted, which brought sweeping changes to the Praetorian Novian system of government. Previosuly, the system had no clear executive being run solely by the national legislature with the Imperator or Dicatator voted to be its nominal head but the Consuls and Censors holding the true power. Now, Praetoria Novus has adopted a more conventional system, drawing on both the Westminster and Washington models. The legislature and executive is checked by the Constitution as is done so in the US, however the executive is accountable to the legislature, as is the case in the UK.

The Prime Minister, Urbunus Postimus Victorinus, the Head of Government announced that Mr Valentian Jovinus would be the new President of the Republic, the now symbolic Head of State of the nation. The Prime Minister also made clear that one of his first tasks will be to bring about to a successful and rapid conclusion Praetoria Novus' involvement in the Amyntos-Iridian States War. Praetoria Novus Detonates Nuclear Bomb

ELUSIA (Reuters) – The Prime Minister of Praetoria Novus, Urbunus Postimus Victorinus, has officially confirmed that his nation now posses nuclear weapons. "Yesterday," he stated, "in a triumph of the Praetoria Novus 'Helios' Atomic Program, three nuclear weapons were detonated underground in the north-west of the Carrhae desert". Independent observes, including the IAEA (the International Atomic Energy Association), believe that these nuclear bombs were two 15-kiloton Uranium fission bombs and one 10-kiloton plutonium fission weapon.

The tests mark the results of a long and costly nuclear program that has taken the better part of a decade to accomplish. Praetoria Novus has long had a nuclear industry, using nuclear power plants in order to provide a significant amount of its energy requirements. The Senate calls its 48 nuclear power stations, “the way of the future, representing clean, safe and cheap energy”. By any standards these facilities are highly advanced, the product of years of investment by the government in science and technology and nuclear research.

Not so well known was Praetoria Novus’ clandestine nuclear weapons programs. It’s military fast-breeder reactors and reprocessing plants as well as advanced gas centrifuge systems have been used in the production of vast quantities of weapons grade plutonium and uranium. It is also believed that Praetoria Novus utilises depleted uranium gained from its centrifuges for military purposes.

The leader of the “Helios” Program, Dr Balbus Lucius Cornelius, praised the result saying that, “Praetoria Novus has entered the Atomic Age”. “We are very pleased with the result, all of the nuclear devices worked as had been expected, their highly efficient designs preformed as they should have,” Dr Cornelius said. “This is only the beginning though. Praetoria Novus plans to detonate a thermonuclear device also, which will serve only to further enhance our security and protect our vital interests for decades to come”.

Praetoria Novus’ nuclear program is located chiefly at Sol Invictus Atomic Research Centre near Hysiae. The bombs detonated last week were ordered into production barely 2 years ago by the Senate, after Praetoria Novian scientists finally eliminated the technical problems that the “Helios” program had faced most chiefly involving the electronic detonators that force the nuclear material together. The tests done yesterday occurred in an underground chamber 160 metres below the surface.

Military analysts expect Praetoria Novus to begin further refining of nuclear weapons technology in order to develop and test a hydrogen bomb. It has been known for some time the Praetoria Novus has an aim to amass a nuclear stockpile for deterrence reasons. Continued ..
