Elections in Praetoria Novus: You decide!

On September 1, 2005, Praetoria Novus holds legislative elections to elect the 600 Senators who will make up her Senate (the chief mono-cameral legislature of the nation). The Party which holds the largest amount of seats will become the executive, a primary feature of the Westminster doctrine of Responsible Government that this nation has newly adopted.

This year’s elections are highly important, for three reasons. Firstly, it is the first election that the Republic of Praetoria Novus has held since she emerged on the international political scene not long ago. Secondly, it is the first elections that are to be held with the current system of government newly formed from a Constitution passed after successful referendum on the September 24 (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=446158&highlight=reforms). Finally, it is an election to be held during a time of war with another nation, which makes it all the more important as an affirmation of this nation’s commitment to democracy.

The three primary Parties are:

Praetoria Novus Social Democracy Party (PNSDP)
Primary goal is the reform of the capitalist system to make it more equitable. Some policies include regulation of the market and industry to protect workers, consumers, and small enterpirse, extensive social security system, government ownership of education, health care, child care and public transport, progressive taxation system, secularism.

Liberal Democratic League of Praetoria Novus (LDLPN)
Primary goal is the improvement and expansion of individual civil rights. Some of the policies include drug legalisation, strong civil liberties (abortion, free speech, freedom of association), secularism.

Constitutional Republican Party of Praetoria Novus (DRPPN)
Primary goal is the improvement of the system of government. Some of the policies include improving and extending the system of checks and balances on the government, increasing the constitutional limits on what the government can do, stricter separation of powers and independence of the judiciary, greater independence of the media, greater transparency, secularism.

A note. Most of these parties have little if any opposition to the policies of the other parties. Many parties will share policies, despite the fact that one more vocally advocates them. For example, all parties in Praetoria Novus equally advocate secularism, women’s right on abortion, social welfare, increasing checks and balances on government, etc.

The primary difference is only in that, generally, these parties will feel one area of politics is greater deserving of attention than another.
