"I'm... going... to... kill... you..."
"Just a little while longer, dear."
Yvonne Dmitrivic groaned and glared at her husband, Merlin, with sheer loathing. "Did... this... to... me."
That was a little much, Merlin thought. I suggested the hospital and the epidural. "Nearly there, dear."
"One more push should do it," the midwife announced.
"You're... next," Yvonne growled. And with one final herculean effort, a new baby girl was presented to the world.
Once the child was released from her warm and generous home for the past nine months and her mouth was cleared, she expressed her supreme discomfort and dismay to the unwelcome universe. Yvonne, however, forgot her threats immediately and gazed lovingly upon the new life now cradled in her arms.
"She's beautiful," Merlin said, testing his right hand to see whether it still had feeling after his wife had crushed it mercilessly in her labour. "Just like her mother."
Yvonne didn't know whether it was the endorphins or the hormones, but she grinned rapturously at that cliché'd line, before smirking and adding her own take on it. "Yes, she is, isn't she?"
The midwife, after ensuring that mother and daughter were fine, had rung the hospital to announce the birth. As she entered the room, she bore a shocked expression, causing the Dmitrivics great concern.
"What is it?" the new parents demanded.
It took a few moments for the midwife to grasp the Dmitrivics' words. "Your daughter is the four billionth citizen. The hospital says they are notifying Parliament."
