OOC: Ambassadors to and from Knootoss

Knootoss

I made a wikipedia page listing the ambassadors to and from Knootoss. Yay.

However, it is very much incomplete. Booh.

Not being in the list right now does not mean not having an ambassador, but I would like the list to be more complete, also as reference material.

If you want an ambassador to the DDR (and if you want one, and you have interacted with me in some way, you can have one) please just post the name of your ambassador here. ALSO list if you would allow the DDR to send an ambassador to you and I'll make up a fancy Dutch name.

As an added bonus, you get to see the name of your nation in Dutch in the wiki, as translated by yours truly. ;)

Wiki article: List of Knootian Ambassadors (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/List_of_Knootian_ambassadors)

Thank you.

From: Mark Lorber
Senior Vice President and External Affairs Officer
Subject: Diplomatic Relations

The Incorporated Sarzonian Government has log observed the government of the Dutch Democratic Republic of Knootoss and would like to close the chapter on a long period of neglect in our nation's history by opening diplomatic relations with your great country.

We would like to nominate Pieter van der Saar as the Sarzonian ambassador to Knootoss should your nation express an interest in establishing a diplomatic exchange programme with our own. We look forward to the possibility of greater diplomatic relations with your nation.

I’d like to thank the Incorporated Sarzonian Government for taking an interest in opening diplomatic relations.

We would be most happy to accept his Excellency Pieter van der Saar as the Sarzonian ambassador to Knootoss, and are pleased to report that the Prime Minister has nominated Leonora Assuerus as the new ambassador to the Geïncorporeerde Staten van Sarzonia.

We hope that, though our shared friendship with the Republic of Pacitalia, we may engage in fruitful trade. The DDR is always open to signing bilateral or multilateral free trade agreements, should your government desire this.

We would request that you take this up with the Prime Minister-elect, Jan Willem Daatman, who is at this moment assembling a new government.

Regards,

The Knootoss Diplomatic Corps, on behalf of the caretaker government.

The Incorporated States of ZMI welcome all peaceful diplomatic contact and in the hope of furthering relations Miss August Philips has been appointed as pro tem ambassador to Knootoss upon your approval. The course of further frank and open diplomatic contact is a path we would wish to follow with a full formal exchange of embassies and a normalisation of relations between our respective states.

With the civil war being over and a fuckton of follow-up problems requiring solution, diplomacy did once more become an issue for the (Newly formed and now even less coherent) DA.

The groups within the newly-formed 'Government' (Of sorts) worked surprisingly well, and searching out for past relations that had collapsed, Knootoss eventually landed on the table, too.

Ambiguous decision. DA had been sort-of allied to Knootoss for a while, back when the WBO and SATO still existed. DA had received Knootian help, back in the time of another (DA had had more civil wars than normal people had socks) civil war. Conversely, DA had also rendered (Significant) help to Knootoss, during the SATO/ GDODAD war.

On the other hand, Knootoss' reputation had plummeted, particularly with the nations DA actually cared about. And while Knootoss could be considered a vaguely (In parts, anyway) civilised society, it lacked the kind of strategic relevance Tarasovka or The C'tan possessed. The same was true for sheer respect, where the likes of Treznor were doubtlessly of greater significance.

But in the end, it was decided that an embassy wouldn't hurt, so long as the budget could be kept within reasonable bounds.

Frank Ishii sighed as he connected through seven different networks to eventually find the appropriate person, the informational chaos in DA being equally amusing and painful. The latter generally being more important when he was trying to do his (New) job, which is to say, playing foreign minister.

But eventually he succeeded, and avoiding a short, annoyed rant by the brand-new Angstian ambassador to Knootoss, could eventually smile to himself, quickly sending his equivalent in Knootoss a short-but-to-the-point message regarding the new ambassador replacing the old, dead one, quickly answered by way of a somewhat less short-and-to-the-point affirmative reply.

A few days later

DA needed resources to rebuild itself. In fact, it needed any and all resources it could possibly get, and as such, the new Ambassador's arrival had been organised to be as cheap as possible.

The airliner had been subsonic, and Sylvia Reynolds had eventually decided to declare the non-humanoid members of her staff 'Baggage' to save costs. After all, she was paying for everyone but herself ("WHAT? A staff? You'll have to pay for unnecessary expenses, you know. Like, say, attachées").

Arriving after a six-hour flight spent in virtual reality with an amazing young man, the next step was a bus stop. Following that the embassy was actually a miracle: They had the building all for themselves. Apparently even the people back at home considered the option of simply renting a 90m^2 apartment to be somewhat inappropriate (Barely so. The option had been brought up, but had eventually been defeated with eleven to ten votes).

Just cleaning up was a bit of an issue...

Nonetheless, having arrived, at least this part was done. The necessary visits with the surprisingly small amount of important people Knootoss had (The advantage of having an administrative tree, rather than an administrative shrubbery, as was the case with DA) could be done tomorrow... After that, work should commence vaguely smoothly.

Official Diplomatic Communiqué

The nation of Knootoss' colonial history cannot be named without mentioning Guffingford and the Dutch who settled there in the same breath. It has been a long time since both of our nations had any significant diplomatic contact. As a matter of fact, we did not have had any contact with the DDR in the history of Guffingford. It has been a long and sometimes troublesome path the People of Guffingford has chosen, and difficulties remain. However, it is time to forge strong and durable ties between our nations, and to let them last forever. The Corpse Diplomatiqué (CD) thanks the reader of this message for his kind attention, and we await his or her reply patiently. The ambassador shall be chosen once we have received your reply.

Best regards, Josef Gerlagsdrif

Howdy! After seeing that your nation has similar interests and views vis a vis the United Nations, individual liberty, and economic freedom, I figured we may have the potential for a mutually beneficial relationship. If y'all have no objections, we would like to conduct a mutual exchange of ambassadors in the interest of furthering our relationship. If y'all accept, we will be sending Lewis Corcoran to serve as our ambassador to the Dutch Democratic Republic. Thanks in advance for y'alls consideration.

We were much surprised by your writing, which is like a message of an old friend from the past. We would gladly re-establish formal relations with the People of Guffingford, and engage in cultural and linguistic ties at earliest opportunity. The incoming government is planning a Dutch Language Union which may be of interest to some states in your Republic. A free trade agreement would, in addition, be good for both our economies strengthening the Dutch Race as a whole.

The caretaker government has nominated Philip Von Tunzelmann as the new ambassador to the Souvereine Imperialistische Republiek Guffingford. We would be honoured to receive an ambassador from Guffingford at earliest opportunity. A comfortable embassy will be waiting in the motherland.

Wassenaar Embassy District

The arrival of the Angstian lady was greeted with relief in the upper-class town and embassy district near The Hague. Relief, mostly, because this meant that the old embassy was finally going to be cleaned up or, preferably, burnt to the ground.

Following the cataclysmic events that had hit Der Angst, Knootoss had placed an absolute cordon sanitaire on anything and everything Angstian. Knootians inside the nation at the time of the cataclysm had been cut off from the outside world, left to their own devices or outside help from nations less freaked out by whatever it was that had wiped out 90% of Angstian civilisation in a flash. Since that time, all ‘good’ Knootians had stayed well away from the urban jungle of their former ally, preferring rather to listen at a distance to the ghost stories of the few Knootian scavengers, adventurers, treasure-hunters and corporate pioneers which had infiltrated the surrealist absurdity that was post-apocalyptic Der Angst.

This government countermeasures had included the Angstian embassy in Wassenaar, which had become a house of ghosts. In the first days, neighbouring embassies had reported strange stories of alien sounds, mad screams of the dying and animalistic roars. In response, a military cordon had been established in the rather prestigious neighbourhood until finally the sounds faded and only the vague smell or rotting flesh drifted from the embassy when the wind was right.

It was no surprise then that the new Angstian embassy was being housed far away from the centre of the town, away from the prestigious embassies of Knootoss’ main embassies, instead housed next to the new Sarzonian embassy. This was, perhaps, not one the best of decisions of the local council…

The Knootian media had been following the developments in Iansisle with a passive interest for the last few years. Several times now, the Knootians had tentatively tried to establish some sort of diplomatic relations only to find their efforts wasted by another change of the guard. Extensive talks with the Grand Empire of the Shield had only served to destroy any goodwill with the constitutional monarchy and new states, and then the situation changed again before the diplomatic corps could adapt to the new situation and spin the Knootian interests as being parallel to whatever government was in power.

Republican sentiment was high in Knootoss – after all its own history had been that of rebellion against a tyrant Emperor, and the current crisis in the North Atlantic pitted Republican and Democratic Knootoss and the Confederation of Sovereign States against the Christian Empires, at least diplomatically. The revolution and subsequent declaration of Republic, covered passively but diligently on KNN, was to pundits and politicians nothing more but an example of the superiority of these “Knootian values”, the nation serving mostly as an example that one could self-rightiously point to as an example of progress. The rhetoric of the new government, too, coincided perfectly with the ‘Liberty and Justice’ line of the incoming administration.

Despite this, the Gull Flag Republic of the Iansislean Peoples was viewed with some distrust by policymakers at the Foreign Ministry in The Hague. Charles Bradsworth, the esteemed diplomats of the foreign ministry considered, was a populist of unclear ideological convictions, and someone rather distant from the more complacent sentiments of the bourgeoise Knootian establishment. The Order of the Invisible Hand wasn’t too happy about the corporatists losing in the conflict, and considered the Provisional Government an enemy of the Market. Uncertain what to do, the Knootians had stayed out. But now that overtures were made to Knootoss, things changed and the confidence lost by the diplomatic fiascos of the administration of Galadriel crept back into the foreign ministry as a new, Green minister took power.

I thank Your Excellency for your kind words, and hope that they can mean a new beginning for the relations of both our peoples. The Knootian government recognises the Gull Flag Republic as a bold new experiment of Republicanism and people power, and we are strongly committed to the international solidarity of the Free Nations of the world, few as they may sometimes appear to be.

In this spirit, I hope that our two nations may venture to cooperate in as many ways as possible to further the cause of liberty and justice, and to promote the prosperity of both our peoples in areas of trade and culture. I would be glad to open talks if Your Excellency were to be open to any such proposals,

We will be happy to accept an embassy for His Excellency C. L. Dalen, and would ask that Knootoss in turn is allowed to establish an embassy in your great nation.

RE: RE: Ambassadors

Dear Sir,
Given the significant rise in contact and interaction over the last few months, including FDI’s acquisition of the Heraclitus Group, seems to now prove a permanent Freethinker Commonwealth representative to the Knootian Government is now a priority for our department. Having reviewed the current situation, recent trends of Knootian politics and likely future developments, we have come to a conclusion regarding our selected ambassador.

We wish to nominate Sir Jonathan Lenington as our ambassador to the Dutch Democratic Republic. A man of considerable talent and energy, he is, in our eyes, an ideal candidate for a nation such as yourselves. We look forward to hearing of your hopeful approval of him as our representative to your Government.

We have set aside space on Embassy Row and an office within Government House should you wish to respond in kind with your own representative. We hope that such an arrangement can be made, given the great benefit it can bring between our respective nations.

My dearest Ms Halsema,

There is nothing that would honor our humble government more than to receive a mission from the Dutch Democratic Republic. I believe that the building used by your ambassador to the ancien régime on Unsterbank Square is still vacant, should you like to make use of it.

Indeed, it is the fullest wish of our Government Assembled that friendly relations with all powers in the world, Knootoss foremost among them, be established. Be it so wished, Mr Dalen has been granted the authority to negotiate preliminary exchange - both cultural and economic - pacts with your government.

I remain your humble and obedient servant,

B. Rinehart
Director of Foreign Affairs
The Gull Flag Republic of Iansisle

The Westerton Jackrabbit slowed as it approached a particularly large and slow-moving group of pedestrians near Gull Flag Square while chugging its way north on the Avenue of the Revolution in Ianapalis.

"Large group," commented Christopher Leonard Dalen, shading his eyes against the setting sun and peering out the un-tinted window towards the gallows, which stood in the very shadow of St Patrick's. "Who is it today? Someone famous?"

"John Neleyhouse - the former Marquess of Sandepass," said Ben Rinehart, nodding.

Dalen understood at once: Sandepass had been found harboring royalist and corporatist traitors at his manor in northern Shadoran. The crowd, many of whom had lost a son or a father fighting against the corporate powers or the royalist insurrection was particularly keen to see justice done.

And then they were past Gull Flag Square. Downtown Ianapalis, with its modern chrome-and-steel skyscrapers contrasted against brick townhouses, gave way to suburban Westergate. That gave way in turn to the verdant hills of rural Pentonshire, from which Ianapalis was little more than a hazy cloud of soot in the southern sky.

They crossed the River Penton at Bucksford and arrived at long last at NFC St Martin - an airbase near the town of the same name - and the two men disembarked.

“Thank you for seeing me all the way out here, Ben.” said Dalen, as they shook hands.

“You’re on one of the most important missions this republic has ever had,” replied Rinehart with a smile. “I couldn’t do anything less for you.”

Behind them, flying corps men had arranged a ladder for Dalen to board his Knootoss-bound aeroflyer.

“Your staff will be arriving shortly after you do,” said Rinehart. “God speed, Chris, and good luck. We’re all counting on you.”

http://historie.denhaag.org/05mrt0474z.jpg

The first days of Dalen were probably a bit of a culture shock for the Gull Flag diplomat. Some things were, perhaps, familiar to the diplomat. The Hague was in many ways a lot like the rich, well-maintained western half Indianapolis, but with water everywhere. The monuments and trees had been covered by some early snow which was rapidly melting away in the golden haze that covered the city at sunset, but some government representatives had been nice enough to give the ambassador a tour of the city.

Special attention was given to 1810 square in the middle of Marc-Alexander park, which was dominated by the statue of the Knootian stadtholder of that name in memory of the victory over the Der Angst Empire and the (re)founding of the Republic. The colossal memorial featured four images and a group of displays, a triumphant Knootian virgin on top. On the side facing the city, a statue of the Stadthouder swearing an oath on the constitution, on the Ukun Rasikan street (named after the Tanah Burung city) the display of the three men preparing for the return of the Prince of the West to Knootoss, and two other female figures on the sides representing religion and history, respectively.

A few more days passed, allowing the ambassador time to settle into the old Iansisle embassy. The embassy in use by the ancien régime had been empty for some time, but it was still a lovely 18th century building nonetheless. Situated in-between some other embassies in an area rich with trees, it had a flagpole in front and a nice lawn which was overgrown by bright red wildflowers and weeds. A few days of work by Dalen, however, restored the embassy to some of its ancient glory.

Femke Halsema agreed to meet the new ambassador on a Saturday in the centre of town, for an informal walk in the park next to the 1810 monument. The snow was melting around them, and Femke was looking fresh, her cheeks flushing red as she adjusted her bright red scarf before greeting the ambassador…

Kawabata Akio was appointed the ambassador to Knootoss. Mr. Kawabata, a career diplomat, was a Western educated man with a Masters in Public Service from the University of Tarana in the Resurgent Dream. A lifelong modernist, Kawabata was a life-long advocate of greater contact with the West, greater social tolerance towards Christians, and a friendlier attitude towards foreigners. He was also a loyal monarchist who practiced the same mix of Buddhism and Shinto as most Adoki.

It was the perfect choice for the position or so Emperor and the Government thought. Traditional enough to steadfastly represent the Adoki position and raise no real controversy at the Court of the Radiant Sun, yet modern enough that he could navigate the Knootian diplomatic scene without seeming anachronistic or out of place.

The appointment was viewed as an important one. Knootoss was a valuable potential trading partner as well as an ally of certain key Adoki allies.
Iansisle
13-10-2005, 12:58
The flagpole had been empty since the last mission to Knootoss - which had been recalled years ago -- flew St. Patrick's Cross in the name of the High King and the Empire. Now, a shock of crimson topped the staff: a spread-winged gull soared over a green shield, the words IANSISLE REPUBLIC proudly emblazoned along the bottom of the flag. The staff and their equipment was still arriving in bits and pieces from the Shield: the entire embassy was one great scene of organized chaos, with advisors running from one end of it to the other and boxes upon boxes of papers, supplies, and personal effects crammed into every corner.

And yet Femke Halsema found Christopher Lee Dalen already in Marc-Alexander Park where he, of all things, was trying to sculpt a snowman out of the paltry remains of the snowfall. He was failing miserably, of course, as there was hardly enough left on the grass to roll into an oblong lump the size of a bowling ball, and even that quickly dissolved into a great mess. The occasional passerby stopped to laugh at him from afar or advise him to wait for the next snowfall, but Dalen kept at it right up until the moment he noticed Halsema.

"Ah! - Ms Halsema!" he cried, his pale cheeks stinging red. He was a relatively plain man of some thirty-five or forty years (which, in a country where the average life expectancy for men was around fifty-five, was getting up there). "You'll have to forgive me -- I haven't seen a good snow like this since I was a boy."

Although the winter months in Iansisle were probably about as cold as those in Knootoss, the winds which normally blow moist, water-laden clouds up from Troobodia Bay up onto the mainland (creating the famous showers of the Shield) are almost entirely reversed; instead, a cold, parched wind from the northwest washes over the country, creating the only dry season in a normally soaked country. White Christmases were few and far between in Iansisle, although once-a-decade blizzards occasionally crashed across the landscape, wreaking havoc on a largely unprepared population. The most famous of these, the Great Blizzard of ‘13, had come so suddenly and so ruthlessly that it had snowed the High Queen and most of the ranking members of the Combined Parliament into St Adies, where they had been attending Christmas mass. In the poor eastern quarter of Ianapalis, thousands had died, either unable to reach food for, in some areas, weeks before the plows arrived, or when poor-quality government-built housing units caved in under the weight of the snow.

“Thank you for coming to meet me today,” Dalen continued, who stood a bit taller than the average Shieldian, but still only about the same height as Halsema. He clasped her hand and shook it; his hands were a bit stronger than one might have guessed, given his slight frame. “I must say that the Iansislean Republic appreciates all the favors which your government has been gracious enough to extend to us. Restarting a mission to a key ally is no mean trick.”

Dalen gestured down the path at Marc-Alexander. “Shall we, madame?”

13-10-2005, 16:29
Well Chimaea would have an Embassy and an Ambassador in Knootoss and vise versa...

The Ambassador for the Commonwealth of Chimaea is Lady Rosaline Galiena De Assis, formerly a Brigadier 112th Airborne who served in Street Island before retiring after Lady Bryce came to power. She was a controversial choice for Ambassador and it's widely believed that Lady Bryce pulled strings to give her one of the most important Ambassadorial posts so that she could have a trusted friend in place instead of the usual Chimaean diplomat.

She is highly educated with a degree in International Relations and Intelligence (the spy sort, not the IQ sort). She is fluent in Dutch (OOC: doesn't mean I am, so don't expect it lol). Before joining the Airborne Regiment she served for five years with Military Intelligence as a field agent. Lady Rosaline is rumoured to have met Lady Bryce in Street Island when the latter was a Marine.

The new Knootian ambassador to the Keizerrijk Adoki as it was called in Dutch was a result of his upbringing: borne the son of a wealthy merchant from the Knootian Cheese Exports industry he had received an excellent VWO-education as well as a masters degree in International Economic Relations in Rotterdam.

Gerard Soeteman was eager for this new, foreign assignment. Finally, perhaps, this would mean a breakthrough for his stalling career. Ever since his mother had been killed ‘running the gauntlet’ on the Menelmacari coast guard, doors had closed. Family relations were not all that important in Knootian culture, but the diplomatic corps had so far known better than to offend Elvish sensibilities. It was therefore this wildcard assignment that finally brought the merchants son into the world of international diplomacy.

By all modern Knootian standards Adoki was an anachronism, a relic of the past that made Pantocratoria seem like the epitome of progressivism. And yet, they appeared to be open to contact from the West and the same sentiments which had driven the Knootian East India Company east centuries ago still lay dormant in Knootian society: new oriental sceneries, new Markets, new opportunities.

Halsema took an instant liking to the playful ambassador Dalen, blushing just a bit over her already red cheeks as she reciprocated his grasp. It was not what she had expected out of an Iansisle ambassador at all; a true believer in the Revolutionary cause, perhaps, such as those on television. The AIVD report she had gotten in preparation of the meeting had been uncharacteristically useless, only providing the information the sort of information that any quick search in public archives would turn up.

“I’m sure you’ll manage very well”, Halsema said somewhat flattered. Being referred to as a key ally was either an overstatement or a desired state, but at any rate it was promising. “If there is anything you need, feel free to contact the ministry. We’re here to help”, she emphasised.

As they walked from the path in the park onto a sidewalk some young boys hurried past them, one holding a snowball in his hand and aiming it at the one he was chasing. Halsema darted aside with unusual dexterity for a sixty year-old, laughing before they continued in the snow-covered city landscape. There was plenty of traffic, but the hydro-electric cars were fairly quiet and free of smog, not really bother in the pair as they talked. The bodyguards, too, kept at a reasonable, unobtrusive distance.

“I was actually hoping to get a feel for the intentions of your country on the international scene”, the Knootian foreign minister said hopefully. “Now that your government seems to have, uhm, stabilised” – she used the word tentatively – “my people have always been interested in good and constructive relations with Iansisle and now that some of the barriers that existed in the past have been removed we could reach some sort of understanding.”

Hannah Rosenberg was a woman in her thirties, young for a Danaan ambassador who was not also a royal lady, which Miss Rosenberg certainly was not. She had earned this post through regular channels and it had been a very non-controversial appointment based entirely upon her diplomatic competence and not on politics. In part, this was because Rosenberg had thus far in her career disdained to make personal political statements. Every argument she was heard to make was the official (and sometimes the unofficial) position of the current Danaan government.

Rosenberg had not been chosen for her religion, of course, but it did make dealing with Knootian society much easier. Where Danaan Christians of most sects might have been spiritually troubled to be around Knootian practices like abortion, the Talmud clearly stated that the fetus was 'ubar yerech imo, literally meaning "as the thigh of its mother" or part of the woman's body.

In truth, Knootoss wasn't that different from back home on the surface. She knew most of the junior diplomatic staff assigned to her expected to find Knootoss more different from home than it was. She remembered her own first assignment abroad, to Pantocratoria. She had half expected to be walking down streets like those of France two centuries past. She had since learned, as these novices would, that the streets of most modern, democratic countries, look remarkably similar, and that their people, despite differences of race and language, share many of the same patterns.

Dalen couldn't help but smile.

"There's no need to mince words, Ms Halsema," he said. "I find that the honest truth must be spoken, however unpleasant, is often the best course to take. For instance, I am perfectly aware that Iansisle's situation the last few years, in both domestic and foreign politics, has been most unruly.

"We're hoping that those trying times are now at an end. The Northman-tyrant has been taken into custody and his army disbanded. The Republic is the sole political authority on the Shield: it alone speaks for its people, who have elected their own government.

"Which," he continued after a long breath of the crisp winter air, "I suppose leads directly into your question. Mr Bradsworth and the entire Assembly agree with Knootoss' sentiments: we feel that a friendship between our great nations would have a stabilizing, calming effect on the entire world.

"For instance, first and foremost, we would like to discuss the issue of the tariffs. I know that Knootoss is a country greatly dedicated to free trade, whereas the old Grand Empire preferred to restrict its imports, at the behest of overgrown, monopolistic corporations such as Royal Mining and Manufacturing.

"We would like to think that Iansisle as a country has grown beyond such puerile protectionism; the Assembly has seen fit to give me the powers to negotiate a free-trade agreement granting Knootian merchants equal status to Shieldians throughout the Republic and her dependencies, as well as tearing down the walls which have long stood between our people."

Sniffling dismally, sitting on a barstool folding paper planes, the Co-President of Ardchoille was hard at work.

However, her Feline Advisor, Bast, was not satisfied.

"It's all very well pretending not to be working by folding all the official correspondence into paper planes," he chided. "But if Neville the Barlord gets a glimpse of you whimpering away like that he'll come over to see what's wrong. And then he'll realise we're actually doing real work in the Strangers' Bar and we'll be chucked out. Then we'll have nowhere to use as an office, because I'm in no shape to tackle the basements of the UN Building, and I doubt you are, either."

"I'm in perfectly good shape," said Dicey Riley, stung by the criticism. "A person has every right to be a bit sad when a dear friend ... disappears."

"Lanchester hasn't disappeared, " Bast said brutally. "The Ambassador and the rest of Skinny 87 have gone, Dicey, gone, and you may as well get used to it. It's not like he'd died or something. They're just off adventuring somewhere else. For all we know he'll be back someday. But in the meantime we've got problems. Pressing problems."

"You mean Finnultia?" Dicey hiccuped, trying to wipe her eyes with a beer coaster.

"I mean Mme Feline Thibaudet, the ex-Ambassador to that ex-nation," Bast said firmly. "We've got to find her somewhere else, but after what happened over there ..." With a Cat's natural diplomacy, he didn't finish the sentence, instead turning politely away and licking the end of his tail to fill the conversational gap.

"It's not so much the Ambassador, it's that nephew of hers," Dicey said. "She's really an extremely competent diplomat and an accomplished Earthwitch, and I've never heard any complaints about her FA -- Sestet, isn't it? -- but the nephew, well ..."

"But it wasn't really his fault," Bast protested. "I mean, Thierry LaFronde won the University Medal the year he graduated. His thesis on the use of logic in United Nations debates was outstanding, if somewhat short. I'm sure he's learnt a lot from the Finnultia posting."

Dicey sighed. "What we need is a sensible nation. Somewhere with ideals, where the people are decently treated. Somewhere that doesn't have breadlines or unemployment queues or wars or insane social divisions or guns all over the place. Somewhere that won't make Thierry think he has to Save the World again."

"And that will be mature enough to let our people celebrate the Solstice the way we want, provided we don't do it in the streets and frighten the citizens," Bast agreed.

A gloomy silence descended, broken occasionally as Dicey or Bast proposed, then rejected, possible destinations. The level of uisquebaugh in the bottle that Dicey had ordered ("Just to add verisimilitude to the idea that we're not actually working, Bast!") sank below half. Dicey leant her aching head on a pile of newspapers that the bar staff had packed up ready for the recycling service.

Suddenly an uninspired headline caught her eye: New Leader in Knootoss.

"Hey, I remember reading about this guy!" she said. "He had the best victory speech! What was his name ... I know! Daatman! He actually seems to have some ideals. If he's inspiring enough, young Thierry might finally decide to pay attention to his job, and then, with his aunt there, he'll have a competent professional to make sure he learns the ropes this time. Brilliant!"

She began scribbling the application to the Government of Knootoss, using the note system that the public servants of the Ardchoillean Administration would expand appropriately: "Standard Para 1, who we are; Standard Para 2a, what we want (friendly); Standard Para 3a (admiration) plus Quote Acceptance Speech (approvingly); Standard Para 4, insert names, history, qualifications Mme Feline Thibaudet, FA Sestet and junior attache M. Thierry LaFronde; Standard Para 5a, requirements, modest (room and board each and entertainment area for parties/worship); Standard Para 6, hopeful farewell. There, that should do it."

Now all they had to do was sit back and wait for the response.

As the ambassador mentioned the ‘Northman-tyrant’ in passing notice, a chilling shudder went through Femke Halsema. It was as if the winter air had just blown over her face, Dalen noticed, her eyes turning black and frosty instead of their usual dark brown. When the matter of tariffs came on, she had already restored herself to the Dalens natural charm, although a hint of her feelings lingered. In a businesslike tone she referred to the ambassador.

"Well, as you might know ambassador, we have never really refused the offer of a Free Trade Agreement in recent decades", she said with a businesslike smile, "If you were to contact the secretariat of Foreign Economic Policy, you’d find that they have all the expertise to draw up a custom agreement. We have always eagerly embraced countries moving towards Free Trade, regardless of their politics."

The cold chill reappeared briefly in her eyes, but this time it was more of concern. She had to be the messenger for a message that she did not like but felt deeply had to be given anyway.

"However I do believe – and so does the government - that our foreign policy should be based on human rights and the rights of sentient beings. I hope you will agree that a foreign policy based purely on the egotistical needs of an elite is no good policy at all." She frowned, looking at Dalen as if in judgement of his response.

"The Republic is a promising development, but I must admit that some of the trials of the Republic (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=450126) have been concerning. James’ show trial, and all the executions in the capital… it is all disturbing, deeply disturbing to be honest."

Tréveszaal, Knootooss

"The Foreign Ministry asked me about an exchange of embassies with some country that we are friendly with this morning and I had to look it up on a map”, Jan Willem Daatman complained good-naturedly as the session by the Council of Ministers came to an end. Walking next to him was Femke Halsema, the green minister of foreign affairs. It had become their habit to do so, every Friday, and their good interpersonal relationship was beginning to attract some jealousy on the part of the other ministers.

"Well, they like you it seems. They even mentioned your inaugural address with approval in their letter", she answered, "Friendly people. We’ve cooperated in the United Nations – Old Guard and all. Basically a nice people, ethnically and ecologically diverse, civilised government, non-existent economy."

"It is part of the United Nations, so I suppose we can’t hold it against them", he said with a laugh. "But go with it, I suppose. We can always try to get more out of it."

“Like what?”, she asked. "Trade again?"

“The usual… whoring of the KIST treaty… the lets get a Free Trade Agreement and have Pareto-optimal babies routine… the cultural exchange programme. Indulge, really, you’ve actually heard of these people before", he smiled at the foreign minister who nodded curtly.

"So… tea or coffee for you today?"

"Splendid, splendid!" said Dalen with a smile. "I shall be sure to do so at once!"

"However I do believe – and so does the government - that our foreign policy should be based on human rights and the rights of sentient beings. Dalen frowned slightly, but also nodded his head with the most subtle of movements.

"Ah yes," said Dalen. "I had a feeling that we would reach this part of the conversation eventually. Well, Ms Halsema, I would like to do what I can to allay your government's fears as to the nature of justice in the Republic. A time of fear breeds the best in some and the worst in most. In Iansisle, we believe very strongly in government by the governed; to do any less is a complete betrayal of the Revolution.

"That having been said, national sentiment is right now very much against those who would destroy the Republic and leave the Shield to the ravages of an Effitian army. Fear breeds paranoia, and many have reacted violently. I will not say that I approve of such 'eye-for-an-eye' tactics, ma'am, but I do understand their roots.

"In our defense, I will say that every single person to date hanged has been found guilty on overwhelming evidence and by a fair trial of their peers. I can simply hope that the more ...violent outbursts of this paranoia will die down once the Effitian threat is mitigated."

The Knootian minister of Foreign Affairs and Defence looked at the ambassador earnestly before continuing as they walked slowly past some of the more prestigious buildings of The Hague, as they were slowly making their way to the Peace Palace. They passed by the old city gymnasium, which stood there proudly as a testament to higher learning in the centre of government. Nowadays, it was part of the municipal education authority and expensive cars were parked in front of the gates behind which children had at one time played and learned.

"I understand the motivations of those involved all too well, Sir, but I cannot ignore such outbursts nonetheless, especially when the government seems to have taken such an active part in these persecutions. In the wake of the Shadow War the national sentiment likewise ran against the fascist agitators who had brought the Dominion invasion upon our country, yet we managed to prevent such a widespread fall-out with a voice of moderation from the interim government…the Conservative party was banned, but we managed to prevent large-scale reprisals."

Her frown burrowed deeply, as she stopped on the pavement to turn to the ambassador. The ambassador now noticed that some people on the opposite side of the street were looking at them. She continued, her voice not raised but rather calm.

"The point I am trying to make is that Royalists are citizens of the Republic too, and I would very much appreciate some sort of gesture from your government to prevent these… outbursts. Knootoss would be willing to serve as a refuge for those who now fall victim to political persecution," She sighed. "I hope you understand that this is also in your own long-term interests – especially as regicide is likely to provoke angry responses from more, ah, conservative nations. I’m offering you the opportunity of having James and his followers sit out their natural lives safely, in a Democratic Republic, should they choose to."

"It is part of the United Nations, so I suppose we can’t hold it against them", he said with a laugh. "But go with it, I suppose. We can always try to get more out of it."

" ... so we've found somewhere to get both of them out of our hair," Dicey Reilly said, spiking the Knootian reply on an old-fashioned file with a satisfied thump.

"I don't know. You want to be careful with these people, Dicey," said her hearer, a slimmish, blondish, tallish man reclining on a burgundy velvet chaise-longue. "As Priest for the oldest coven in Ardchoille, I hear things. And one of the things I hear is that the Knootians, appearances to the contrary, are very serious folk. Very careful. Slow but steady. Give 'em an inch and they'll take a polder. Do you really think it's a good idea to send 'em our two most difficult diplomats?"

"They're also the two most qualified diplomats we've ever had," Dicey returned. "And anyway, what harm is Knootoss likely to do to us? They're a thoroughly respectable nation, idealistic, involved, admirable in every way ..."

"I'm not worried about what harm they'll do to us," replied Phillippe Thibaudet, "I'm worried about what they'll do to us purely for our own good."

But such carping merely annoyed Dicey. "Well, any time you want to take over as Co-President, I'm happy to make way for you," she snorted. "I'd be overjoyed, in fact. It's not as if I asked for it .."

"Oh, you asked for it, Dicey, you really did," answered Phillippe, remembering with awed horror the diplomatic catastrophe that had led to Dicey being sentenced to the Presidency for an indefinite period. "I don't see how I could ever meet the standards you set."

There was no real riposte available to that, except to slam the door on the way out, which Dicey did.

The trouble was, Ardchoilleans were collectively so law-abiding that it was very, very rare for anyone to do anything ghastly enough to earn society's ultimate sanction, the Presidency. It was all too probable that one moment of high-spirited youthful indulgence was going to maroon Dicey in politics forever.

Worse, she was beginning to -- almost -- like it.

Dalen listened politely to the discussion, his expression carefully neutral. He had indeed noticed all the people staring at them as they walked, but knew that he was walking with one of the most important officials of the Knootian Republic; surely there would be some interest in her doings? Perhaps a news crew would be the next to arrive? Shame to ruin a perfectly nice walk with cameras and crowds.

"The point I am trying to make is that Royalists are citizens of the Republic too, and I would very much appreciate some sort of gesture from your government to prevent these… outbursts. "I think we have reached the stumbling point," said Dalen with a friendly smile. "It is my fault, of course: I should have been more explicit. The terms 'royalist' and 'traitor' often overlap on the Shield - unrightfully so. I would like to make it clear now that no single man has been sent to the gallows merely for being a royalist; indeed, many royalists, even those who still profess loyalty to the former King, still serve in important functions to the Republic.

“Take for example Philip Clayburgh, the former Marquess of Westergate. Although Citizen Clayburgh has often -- and publicly -- dissented with the Assembly’s decisions, he still faithfully performs his duties to the Republic. Therefore, a royalist is given command of the entire Home Fleet, our one and only line of defense against Roania.

“As for James Callahan, I am afraid that my government will find it quite impossible to allow him to escape justice. Citizen Callahan raised an army of Northmen and rode against the Republic with the intention of deposing a government rightfully elected -- and in a time of war, nonetheless! I am sure that your government can appreciate that this was a supreme example of treason, especially when Callahan was given every opportunity to live peacefully under the governance of the National Assembly.

“I should also note that the right of emigration has never been challenged. Already, large émigré communities exist in several countries, notably Larkinia, Roania, and Fultonia. Only those who stand accused crimes against the state will be detained; if they are cleared of charges, then they will again be free to go where they will.” Dalen took a deep breath. It felt as though he had been speaking forever.

“But how rude of me!” he cried. “I fear that, in my enthusiasm for the subject, I have been monopolizing the conversation!”

Official Communiqué of the Freethinker Commonwealth Government

To: Head of the Knootoss Diplomatic Corp
From: Sir Alex Broxtowe, Foreign Minister of the Freethinker Commonwealth
RE: RE: Ambassador Replacement

Dear Sir,
Due to unforeseen security issues we wish to announce that we are to recall our Ambassador, Sir Johnathan Lexington, and in turn replace with a new appointee, Vice-Ambassador Aryn Tyras, an experienced diplomat who we feel could, and, in the circumstances should represent our interests in the nation to what we hope is a better degree than our previous appointment as the Freethinker Ambassador to the Dutch Democratic Republic.

We are sorry to inform you of this as such short notice, but we can only state that this recall is related to an undisclosed domestic matter and that Lexington's duties will be immediately taken up by Mr Tyras and as such there should not be any disruption to current diplomatic undertakings. We also feel that we should point out Mr Tyras is a Freestian Vampire (of the Tyras Clann, incidentally) and as such we should advise that he be treated with the necessary etiquette as and when appropriate at the formative stage in the diplomatic relationship. We hope that the appointment of a member of this species will not present problems and if you do have any issue with this we will do our best to sort out a further replacement as soon as possible.

Once again, I apologise for the short notice of this changing of the post, but unforeseeen circumstances unfortunately require rapid reversals. We hope we have not offended nor inconvinienced your staff in this matter.

Vologdov and Dalen continued to walk on along the pavement, but by this time Dalen noticed that there were two men following them at some distance. They were dressed in more or less civilian clothes but they looked fairly tough and one of them was holding his hand against his ear while saying something. The Knootian Foreign minister did not seem to take notice or care, however, instead replying to Dalen.

"It is quite all right," Femke said with a faint smile and a sparkle in her eyes. "Your point is quite well-made. However, I’m still concerned that, some injustices may occur which cannot be reversed – even if they are being committed in your very enthusiasm to bring justice to your new Republic." She darted her eyes to the pavement and back thoughtfully before continuing. "It would suit your… reputation for integrity to make some sort of public gesture. Such a gesture would also be very much appreciated over here, I can assure you.

She frowned a little, eying the ambassador before pressing a button to attend a traffic light for pedestrians of their presence.

"You mentioned the continued threat of Roania. Our contact with them has been very limited, but from the stories I’ve heard I do not believe this is in any way regrettable - our old embassy in Tarnaqin has been active less than I am hoping yours will be. Our own experiences with these so-called Holy Empires have usually been very poor", she said a little apologetic, "and we have been very much unable to influence affairs there, even if some of the rights abuses have been appalling. Now, it is not for me to interfere in your domestic policies, Ambassador, but we do have a strong commitment to Sentient Rights, or Human Rights as you may call them and Iansisle would appear to be a country of Reason, so when I raise the issue of Sentient Rights I am really expressing a confidence that it will not fall on deaf ears with you."

The traffic light jumped to green.

RE: RE: Ambassador Replacement

I would hereby like to inform you that the Dutch Democratic Republic grudgingly accepts the recall of Ambassador Lexington. Sir Johnathan Lexington has served his country well in Knootoss, and we would wish to bestow upon him those honours traditionally given to high-level foreign diplomats for meritorious service in Knootoss, even if his tenure was shorter than intended.

We do have some questions about the proposed replacement, Bice-Ambassador Aryn Tyras. He certainly has excellent credentials but members of Foreign Affairs ministry have nevertheless requested me to ask you for additional information with regards to protocol. We have not previously accomodated Freestian Vampires, and some of my diplomats are naturally a bit nervous about the prospects of an encounter. I have made sure that the difference between demonic vampires and Freestian vampires is made clear to all members of the diplomatic corps, but I would ask that the Ambassador take account of these natural sentiments nonetheless. I believe that he will find Knootians to be a welcoming and easy-going people once any initial fears have been proven unfounded.

As the newly elected Green minister of Foreign Affairs I most heartily welcome your new initiative. A diplomatic team of the Cloud-Water Community will be very welcome in Knootoss, and a modest free-standing villa in Wassenaar has been arranged for you, to be used as a formal embassy. I have submitted Lukas Van Couvenhoven to become the new ambassador to the Wolken-Watergemeenschap Ecopoeia. As an author and intellectual of the left, we hope that he will feel well at home in your nation. Having previously written on the topic of social equality in your country, I feel that he is expert enough to lead the Knootian delegation there.

The ministry of Foreign Affairs and Defence is also most anxious to learn if your country would be interested in further establishing relations with the Dutch Democratic Republic. I appreciate that economic ties are a controversial political issue, but I am hoping that our countries can engage in further mutual cooperation towards common goals in international fora such as the NSUN as well as promoting programmes of cultural and scientific exchange between our two nations. Through such small steps I hope to sow some seeds of reconciliation.

"You mentioned the continued threat of Roania. "There are very many secrets within the Divine Imperium of Novar Ohun," said Dalen cryptically, "very few of which see the light of outside world. We also maintain an embassy with them -- one which has enjoyed a very checkered history -- but I'm afraid that our actual knowledge of the country beyond our walls is minimal.

"Madame, that issue which you mention is also paramount to both myself and our honorable Assemblymen. You have my personal assurance that the day the Republic's government betrays the Universal Human Rights Paragraphs is the day that I tender my resignation. I would not serve a government which I felt was infringing on mankind's liberty or life."

Star Office, Kremlin Palace, RAMC, Derscon

Czar Alexei Alexandrovich Andropov XIV, Monarch of the Divine Prussian Empire of Derscon, Sultan of the Eternal Empire, Guardian of the Covanent of God, and current de facto Emperor of Greater Prussia, uddered a series of vulgarities as he dropped the crystal wine glass on the floor, allowing it to shatter across the carpet, staining it with the vodka. Unfortunately for Alexei, it was at this time that Count Franz von Papen, the Foreign Minister, and Prince John Rekjyavich, his older brother, walked up the ramp into the office.

"Did you break another one?" the Prince taunted. "Christ, Alexei, that's the third one in the past month!"

"I'm aware," was the dry response as he started brushing the shards of glass onto a piece of paper. "The damn things are so expensive, too." Franz and John took a seat opposite the massive and twisting desk as the Czar dropped the shards of glass -- as well as the paper (which happened to be a letter from the Dersconi National Office of PETA, demanding government funding) -- into the memory hole, where it was taken away to a massive furnace deep within Rekjyavich-Andropov Military City.

Alexei sat back down in his large (and quite comfortable) swivel chair behind the desk and swung around to face Papen.

"So, what's the topic of discussion?" Papen, taking a sip of some remaining Napoleon Premier wine from the private bar, cleared his throat and handed over a document from the Foreign Representations Directorate.

"Well, Alexei," the Count began. "Knootoss has started accepting ambassador exchanges, along as producing a list of current exchanges." Alexei was looking over the list as Papen continued talking. "I am suggesting you ask for an embassy exchange." This caught Alexei by surprise, making him look up with an inquisitive look.

"Why? Knootoss is quite open with his anti-GPE rhetoric."

"Let's face it -- the GPE isn't evil. Well, more specifically, Derscon isn't an evil nation. I think we have an oppertunity to save face with the International Community, as well as progress Dersconi-world direct relations, instead of working solely through the GPE." Alexei thought for a moment, and nodded.

"Okay, then, I don't see anything wrong with it. Send an inquiry to their Foreign Ministry." Papen and the Pricne then stood up, getting ready to leave.

"I will do that, Alexei. Good day." With that, the two departed and the ramp closed, leaving Alexei to wonder how he was going to get the stain out of the carpet.

Sir,

It has occurred to the Imperial Government that while having a long and profitable history with Knootoss, we have yet, as far as our memory serves us, exchanged, on a formal level, ambassadors.

Obviously in such an age of international peace and prosperity this deficit should be addressed, and the correct steps taken to ensure our already strong relationship is enriched and strengthen.

To that in mind, and with the authorisation of the Most Holy and Omnipotent Emperor Urban, we offer Lord Tarmalina-See, a most honourable and wise man, and someone who I know will do a superlative job as ambassador to your great and powerful nation.

We respectfully ask that in order to complete the exchange a suitable ambassador be submitted to the HEWC.

May the Cooler bless both of our countries and ensure our future together is long, profitable and above all peaceable.

’Little tower’ of the Prime Minister, The Hague, Knootoss

Jan Willem Daatman, the Prime Minister of Knootoss, was likewise enjoying a drink in his office when Femke Vologdov stepped by to discuss the latest proposal. While he was admittedly rather less lavishly endowed with titles and honours compared to a man like Czar Alexei Alexandrovich Andropov of Derscon, he was a bit more adept at not breaking glasses whilst drinking. One glass of nice and cold quality beer was all he allowed himself when on affairs of state, but that did not stop him from offering his Foreign Affairs and Defence Minister a second when she decided to drop by.

"So Femke", he asked after the first few sips. "Whats this I hear about Derscon? They want a separate embassy now?"

"Apparently", Femke Vologdov replied with a little shrug. "We already have an embassy for the Greater Prussian Empire though, and that is really already as much contact as I feel we need to have with these creeps. It’s a ‘Reich lite’ if you ask me, only they have some sort of wish to reach out to the world at large whilst doing their oppression thing."

"Hmmm," Daatman mused with a gentle smile at the comparison, "on the other hand, one could argue that it would never hurt to establish an embassy. Reaching out to the world, promoting Knootian values and all…", he said in a devils advocate kind of way.

"True", Femke agreed, "although I would really like to focus on strengthening relations with more ethical nations, rather than striking deals with all these questionable regimes. That is giving a very bad signal, don’t you think? My heart is breaking already because I cannot say anything to help those anti-Global Hell protestors."

Daatman raised his hands to form a double line in the air which was about the size of a Telegraaf newspaper headline

"Jan Willem Daatman Reaches Out…. To Fundamentalist Christianity", he spelt out the imaginary headline. "Making friends around the world, from Pantocratoria to Derscon. Reich visit set to be smashing success."

"Don’t be silly Jan", Femke said with a chuckle, "that assumes the Knootian people will even care about this decision, however it may end up."

"I should be warned", Daatman continued on a more serious note, "that people have already been saying these things about me because of my personal beliefs – which is ridiculous as it is."

"Have some of your Liberal MPs been bothering you again?", Femke asked teasingly.

"Don’t even start..:", Daatman said as he reached for his beer, downing the remains of his glass.

From: Countess Femke Vologdov of Pereslavl, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Defence, Knootoss
Subject: Re: Embassies

Your Excellency,

We have received your offer of an embassy exchange with the Divine Prussian Empire of Derscon and are considering your offer at present. At present the Dutch Democratic Republic already enjoys diplomatic representation via an embassy at the Greater Prussian Empire, in which the DPR plays no insignificant part. By means of this GPE embassy, Knootoss seeks to work together with the Empire towards common goals in the international arena as well as promote good bilateral relations and promote Sentient Rights and Universal Knootian Values in the Empire.

The Dutch Democratic Republic has so far maintained the policy of treating the Greater Prussian Empire as a single national entity and has therefore not ventured to establish diplomatic representation within individual member nations. To establish an empire in the Divine Prussian Empire would construe an abandonment of this policy, such as it is, and if we were to adopt a policy of non-discrimination towards GPE member nations this would instead require us to establish embassies in all individual member nations.

At present, we are unable to make such a move. As Your Excellency is well aware, Dutch Democratic Republic does not recognise the unilateral withdrawal of the so-called Allanean government from the Treaty of the Wolf. It can therefore not, in good conscience, recognise all the constituent parts of the Greater Prussian Empire and, as a consequence, chooses to maintain its policy of not making such a distinction in diplomatic relations and leaving the matter of Allanea in the middle. We are fully committed to a solution which entails that Allanea and the Greater Prussian Empire recognise the validity of the Treaty of the Wolf and seek a mutually acceptable solution with the Grand Duchy of Tarasovkya.

In the event that such a solution be reached we are fully willing to reconsider our policy with regards to diplomatic representation with individual nations in the Greater Prussian Empire, and we remain as always committed to the strengthening of bilateral ties and are open to any initiatives in that area.

Sincerely,
Lord Hizen Barden, Over Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Holy Empire of the Water Cooler
The Holy Empire of the Water Cooler.

"Sir?", Femke frowned as she finished her letter to Lord Hizen Barden. "I wonder what made them think that I am a man. And I’m pretty sure that we already established embassies. Odd. Very odd."

On behalf of the Knootian government I would be happy to accept Lord Tarmalina-See as the ambassador of the Heilige Keizerrijk van de Waterkoeler. Indeed I was quite surprised that we had not established an embassy exchange just yet. Under the terms of the KIST treaty such an exchange was already mandated, so it would appear to be quite an erroneous oversight.

I have dispatched Mr. Theo van Hoog as the Knootian ambassador to the Water Cooler. We hope that you will accept him as an excellent candidate. His background in law and economics should only serve to further improve the already profitable economic ties between our two nations.

OOC: I have listed Mr. Werner Cronenburgh as the ambassador to the Verenigde Groothertogdom van Alcona en Hubris, and left you a spot to fill in on the wiki list. ;)

One would hope that the only former Knootian colony that wasn't out to undermine you, or was full of revolutionaries for you to keep down, would still have a diplomatic relations with.

(OOC: Thanks, now I have to find the T.B. invasion thread. Since that is the last place I saw my Ambassador...)

http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=381087, if you're still looking.

Government tender:

The government of the United Provinces of Tanah Burung announced today its intention to sell its embassy building in Knootcap.

"We no longer need an embassy in that particular country, and frankly it's an ugly building anyway," said Bi Kikere, head of the Burungi coalition government. "We'll be donating the guilders from the sale of this real estate to Knootian anti-poverty movements. It's shocking how the poor of Knootoss continue to suffer despite their country's wealth, and my government wants to help them."

The Burungi embassy compound features sloping roofs in the style of the Minang people. It is open to the street but could be enclosed for security if desired. Occupying an urban spot, it is possibly more valuable for the land than the buildings.

Van Arsden continued shifting through countless papers until he came across a recent article in a Knootian newspaper. He had been one of the few that kept up with Knootian politics lately, and was rather approving of the current government. He felt Daatman to be particularly dodgy, and would have much preferred a Halsema (eh, Vologdov) Prime Ministership instead. However, he put his thoughts aside and ordered his assistants to find a viable candidate for an ambassadorship to "an old friend". He then wrote the Knootian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Defence.

Subject: A Blessed Return

Greetings,

I must say that I am very pleased at the change that has taken place in Knootoss over the past year. Etaros has changed as well, though to more of a degree than would be quite imaginable.

It may have struck your attention that our nation has returned the world stage after years of internal strife and war, and we have strongly claimed victory over the forces of despotism. The Erasati Republic is now ruled by a democratic and legitimate government, much to our joy and pleasure.

First, I would like to apologize for past actions taken by our former rulers (that had little to no mandate to govern) that distanced Knootoss from ourselves. Though such distancing was not entirely the fault of our nation, it is regrettable that it did occur. However, I am very well aware of past promises that have not been fulfilled to the DDR, as I have been active force in Lietuv/Etarosi government for a very long time.

It shall be an active policy of this government to ensure that the city of Hvittsted be fully turned over the DDR, as well as other chunks of what is now called 'Etarosi Haven'. Though the land has created its own subculture, we have made sure to maintain our authority enough to make sure the people didn't split off and create their own country. This deal, however, will be done in private and without much public fanfare. We do not wish to kindle the dangerous flames of Haven in any manner.

It shall also be an active policy of this government to align itself with Knootoss in most areas of international relations. It is my understanding that you have been working on peace with several formal foes, and I wholeheartedly congratulate the DDR on its change of path. We, too, are changing our international stance from one of general avoidance to one of an active voice. In fact, we have recently contacted the Midlonians about membership in the Concordat (pending certain changes), though this has not been made public because we are unsure of what we will do.

Knootoss is a friend, and any assistance, whether it be military, financial, or diplomatic, will be lent if it is requested.

Obviously, it does not need to be said that I am very interested in increasing Etarosi-Knootian dialogue to a level that would be known as a very close, strong friendship. I look forward to renewing trade deals, treaties, and other instances that will create a closer bond between our nations.

As a first step, we will be naming Alexei Kasparov-Novarni as Etarosi Ambassador to Knootoss. I'm sure that you will find him to be of remarkable character and amazing expertise. He has served as ambassador to KIST and VERITAS, and is very well-educated in Knootian customs and government.

With best regards,

Joseph Van Arsden

Femke was a bit surprised at first, but then she gasped. Such a display of gentlemanly behavious was of course unheard of in Knootoss, and whilst she thought it endearing in a way she also thought it very stupid to ruin a jacket like that. It was cold outside, after all, and he would still have to walk for quite a bit with her.

"Oh, no need that Mr… it would ruin your jacket!" she cried out as she hurried behind Dalen to catch him.

OOC: Will get to other replies later. usually I do everything at once but I feel that it would unfairly hold back Iansisle... again. :/

((*snicker* Like you could ever hold me back more than I do myself, Knoot. =P))

"Nonsense!" cried Dalen, fluffing the jacket with a flick of his wrist and laying it down. "I consider it an honor. Besides, I always dress in layers." He showed her the heavy woolen sweater which he was wearing under his shirt.

"After you, madame." It was quite clear that he would not take 'no' for an answer. He picked his jacket back up after she crossed, brushed what water he could off the back, and looped it over his arm. "Although it doesn't snow much on the Shield," he said, "I am quite used to the cold.

"I believe we were addressing the topic of human rights, no?" Dalen continued.

"I believe so", Femke affirmed. She was still very impressed by the episode with the jacket and somewhat concerned that the nice but somewhat quaint gentleman would catch a cold. "And I am sincerely hoping that things will improve. Certainly you make a very convincing case, Your Excellency", she smiled and her cheeks lit up red from the cold. "And I am inclined to meet the Gull Flag Republic with trust. In this world of Absolutist Kingdoms and Holy Empires it is sometimes difficult to find kindred spirits with the same commitment to Republicanism. The people of Ilek-Vaad would qualify, I suppose, but then they have their own quirks which has made our relations with them quite difficult..." she stopped, recalling it an episode she'd rather not go into.

"It is perhaps not your commitment to Human Rights that we are worried about so much", she admitted, "if I can be frank - it is perhaps first and foremost a matter of stability. As a politician I'm used to dabbling in elementary political science a little bit", she said almost apologetically, "and the theory of Revolutions would be part of that interest."

"I hope you will forgive me for the crude generalisation if I compare recent events in your country with the so-called Atlantic Revolutions associated with the Enlightenment." She paused, hoping she had not offended already but feeling that this was not likely the case. "Knootoss, as you know, is an Enlightenment country by slow development rather than Revolution, very much in an Anglosaxon liberal way. However, as you are aware, Revolutions have always had to deal with the forces of reaction either from within or from without. Looking at it as a crude political science model..." she was now holding her hands in front of her, and she was building out the 'model' in the air as they tramped along, "of three stages in a revolution, you have the old regime, followed by the overthrow, the establishment of an idealistic government like yours - followed by..."

Your Excellency,

It is with great joy that I note your return to the world stage. Any distance that may have existed between us is, I hope, a thing of the past. It is with great joy that I recognise the Erasati Republic and pledge to honour all our alliance commitment from now on.

With regards to the transfer of Hvittsted and surrounding areas, I fully agree with your approach. The legal preparations have already been made by the Staten-Generaal for the creation of a new member state of the Knootian Federation. We promise you a liberal-democratic rule, by the standards of Knootoss, which will protect the interests of the Pink Bunny Cola Coporations but also – first and foremost – those of the people living in Hvittsted. I am hopeful that this transfer will be peaceful.

As always, Knootoss shall seek to support your Republic in most areas as well as strive to work together towards common goals. As you are aware we are, ourselves, negotiating entry into the Concordat pending a review of the treaty. We would welcome it if our states were to join together.

Alexei Kasparov-Novarni will be well-received as the as Etarosi Ambassador to Knootoss. I have personally met him before on several occasions and know him to be a trustworthy diplomat. The Knootian ambassador to Etaros, Dr. Gerard Leuftink, has also asked me to convey his congratulations.

Dalen nodded somberly. "Followed by the descent into terror and despotism. Robespierre and Bonaparte, Cromwell and Stalin," he said. "As you mentioned, our line of work often leads to amateur political science.”

He shrugged. “I can tell you that the Constitution was drafted with an eye to history. It prevents reelections to the Assembly after four terms. The military is kept under tight civilian control. We also hope that, with no head of state, the temptation to abuse executive power can be avoided.

“And, if it helps any, I would also like to add that, in the fight against a tyrant usurping the Republic, I would gladly give my life.” Dalen smiled. “However, I feel -- and Mr Bradsworth and the Assembly agree with me -- that the Republic shall never have to face that future. Saddly few people are ready to defend these traits in our world....as the Iesus people know to their horror.

We require only a simply facility, something that our government can use as our bound grows closer. My own son I would advance as head of our mission and liaison with you. Martin has often expressed his love of Knootoss, and believes as I do, that we must work with you for the final liberation of our people.

The Beacon of Light agenda has been made known to me, and I would express my sincere interest in acquiring economic and military aid for the exiled government. It saddens me but I does appear only violence will dislodged the Fascist beast.

I hope a prosperous relationship awaits us.

Gregory Prieston smiled broadly as he left the plane. The tall thin Gregory stroked his slightly graying hair and patted down his suit. “Told you we’d make it, any lint left on me”
Greg’s companion answered with a smirk, and his blue eyes shone. “Well, was there ever any doubt?” An innocent smile crossed his face; a face young, soft and smooth. His ash-blond hair was cut shortish, and his body had the hallmarks of someone who enjoyed keeping in shape….his simple black shirt hugged his sleek body.
He wetted his full and sensuous lips “so, now what?”
“Patience Jason. Patience” Greg placed his hand on Jason’s back as they walked “I’m glad you decided to come here with me….”

Ministry of Foreign Affairs, The Hague, Knootoss

A pleasant-looking young man with an appreciative smile ushered the delegation of the Iesus government in exile into the Knootian ministry of Foreign Affairs. The sizable bureaucratic complex in the heart of The Hague was buzzing with people of different races, languages and political persuasions. Though security was tight, it had been moved very much in the background, and during the brief waiting period in one of the many bars of the ministry it was quite unnoticeable.

"The State-secretary will see you now", the young host told the Iesus delegation as the double glass door leading to the office of the state-secretary of Foreign Affairs swung open.

"Welcome, welcome, please do come in", a pleasant voice welcomed them in accentless English. Tim de Boer rose behind his desk, extending a hand to the delegation. Gregory Angrod smiled. He had the air of confidence as he walked into the office. His companion and 'attaché', the ash blonde haired Jason, followed close behind. Gregory took the ministers hand

"It’s such a pleasure to meet you."

"A pleasure to meet you too Sir Prieston", Tim said with a polite nod of his head. His eyes refocused and lingered on Jason, "and you too... Mr..?"

Jason smiled and gave a nod "Jason Andrews. I'm...Gregory’s personal assistant in these matters"

The faintest smirk crossed Greg’s face as Jason spoke. The Knootian grinned as well as he looked at the young Iesian. He sized him up as being about twenty years young, and considered that perhaps the rumour-filled reports of the AIVD about Priestons dandy lifestyle had some core of truth to them.

"Please, do sit down and make yourselves comfortable", he urged with care. "I think we have much to discuss, and I'll enjoy your opinions."

"Thank you, thank You" Greg sat down carefully, straightening his clothing carefully. Jason took the chair next to Greg, and quietly shuffled it over closer to his 'boss'. Gregory spoke gently

"Let me first say, its a pleasure to be here in Knootoss. I haven’t been here since my late teens. I enjoyed it then I must say..." It was Jasons turn to smirk as Greg spoke

"I'm glad to hear that", Tim said. He noticed the quick exchanged of glances, and it reminded him of something… familiar. "I'll get right to the point", Tim said earnestly. "I'm a curious man, and I'd like to hear about developments in the Reich... I've heard that you have taken care of several recent refugees and quite understandably they are more inclined to tell you things. After that I'd like to discuss the future of your provisional government and what sort of resources you require from us. Is that agreeable to you?"

"Very well, Sir. As you may know, I was born outside Iesus, my father Sir Angrod left that land as a child shortly after the revolution 50 years ago. But, we have worked hard and continue to have great information networks. And of course recently, the government in exile was declared...this gained us some negative interest from the Iesus fascists, but has helped many other exiles flock to the banner of liberation"

Tim nodded, inclining his head as if encouraging the Iesian to continue.

"As you no doubt know, the Iesus government is extreme in her internal policy. Of late...things have only been getting worse. Bridgette Iesus is insane...and she now controls much of the nation through fear and total media control. Only the church is free, and even then many, many priests are arrested for failing to sign the oath. My friend Jason is newly escaped from Iesus...he can testify to the horrors. This isn’t in the past; this is cruelty happening right now."

"You don't say", Tim said, his hand instinctively reaching for his chin. His eyes softened a bit as they refocused themselves on the boy. "You escaped?"

Greg turned to Jason "He showed bravery that any soldier would be proud to display. Its hard to leave Iesus but where there is a will, there is a way." Jason smiled, and brushed his hair back. His blue eyes smiling as the Knootian state-secretary leaned forward a little on his desk.

"What we need is your help", Gregory continued, "We can’t liberate ourselves alone. People like Patrick Iesus thought so...and now he's vanished from the face of the earth. We need your help."

Jason waited for Greg to finish, listening to every word as Gregory spoke it...like it was gospel. He looked Tim De Boer in the eyes

"I did escape. And that’s why I agree with Greg." His voice betrayed him as being younger than 20, he sounded innocent and smiled as he spoke.

"Please tell me about it", Tim started hesitantly. "Your last few years in Iesus. Well… we've been getting so many contradicting reports..."

Jason looked worried for a moment; Greg placed his hand on Jasons knee "it’s ok. In your own time.."

"If it is difficult...", Tim said, leaning back a little concerned and arching a brow.

"No. I'll be fine, there isn't much to tell really “Jason gave an embarrassed smile “Life was never easy. Things are hard at home. The Ministry of Social order can do pretty much what it wants, but I never really knew things were bad. When I turned 17, that's when I noticed how bad things really were…The rubbish with the priests happened. Allowances were cut. I had to go do my mandatory service. I was drafted into The Ministry of social order! They're bad people. I saw very bad things, well anyhow. My Captain was, well, all hands? He'd be pretty rough, insistent about what he wanted. So, I thought, Screw that for a laugh, he wasn't getting nothing. First chance I got hide aboard a cargoship with a mate. He hadn't been so tough and the captain had, well. He had a rough time of it sir. We hide aboard the ship in different cargoholds" - Tim meanwhile nodded compassionately as he listened to the young mans story – "A random search before leaving port got my friend. The sailors told me that when they found me hiding a week latter. Those merchant navy guys are nice enough. The captain dropped me off in Bigtopia. I owe that guy everything. That was six months ago. I guess that's it really. Sorry. I'm not a good story teller"

"That was very brave of you Jason", Tim de Boer corrected the boy, "and I am really sorry to hear that about your friend." His eyes were looking a bit sad now as his own personal loss in the past came back all heavier after hearing Jason. A flicker of Shadow War mixed in with the story about the Reich.

Jason smiled "there is always the future. I don’t believe we have the right to be downcast. While we breathe, there is hope"

Tim nodded quietly, almost guiltily, and there was an audible sigh before he resumed speaking. "You should be commended", he said honestly, and apparently touched. "Thank you." The Knootian turned now to Gregory, his voice graver now. "Sir Prieston, you know that my government is sympathetic towards your provisional government. However, I also hope you realise that a... liberation... is not quite feasible as it is."

Gregory nodded "Indeed. Mores the pity, but I understand. We need resources to help spark the tinderdry conscience of Iesus. The people crave freedom but think they are alone" Gregs hand was still on Jasons knee, slowly Jason was stroking the hand during the conversation.

"I can see that", Tim said with a nod, "But how would you propose to do that?"

I'm sure Knootoss intel officers and experts could move into Iesus given time and preparation? But frankly, whatever you offer, we'll take" Responding to Jason's touch, Greg's stroked the young mans thigh. At this point, the Knootian state-secretary began to be convinced that Gregory wasn't just reassuring his young assistant. His own eyes lingered at Jasons thigh longer than usual as he tried to formulate a response.

"I, uh," the Knootian began, "well, I cannot go into this sort of thing in too much detail for intelligence reasons, you understand, but so far domestic intelligence sources have our preference… nor would agents be able to do much beyond information-gathering. What I was expecting was a more, uh" he paused again, distracted, "a comprehensive approach."

Greg nodded “ideally, we would attempt to build the exiles into an 'army' while fanning the flames of rebellion and sedition at home. Surely a popular rebellion would gain foreign help?

"If it looked as if it was being successful," Tim said slowly. "But there is more to the Reich than just Iesus, and if the geopolitics of today are not in your favour, I'm afraid. If only SATO still existed..."

"I understand, but the people will be free, or at least attempt to make themselves free. At the moment we have a chance to unite all those who oppose the fascist leadership. I hope we'll get the resources to do that" Jason watched Greg as he talked, never once looking down at the hand that was roaming up his thigh and over rubbing his crotch

"Err, aye", Tim de Boer said as if he had something stuck in his throat, watching from across his desk. He swallowed once and reached around for a bottle of wine standing on a small table behind him.

"The list of those who suffer in Iesus is endless... metas.. Jews.. protestants.. priests.. Unionists... civil rights activists... homosexuals. Remember, real people are dying right now..." Greg spoke with a stern voice, he didn’t seem to even be aware his hand was now running along his young companions crotch.

"Didn't even offer you a drink... tea lady not coming", Tim muttered apologetically, more to himself than to his guests. He turned around again cleverly holding three glasses. "Could I offer you some out of my own small collection?", he asked - sounding a bit unsure of himself, "and yes... yes, I know..." his voice trailed a little in confusion.

"Wine would be good" Jason spoke "I so despise Bigtopian wines." Greg nodded in agreement even as his hand ran back and forth over the young man. Greg made a funny face at the mention of Bigtopian wine "true filth that wine is." Neither men seemed to see that De Boer was confused, Iesus duality was something they were both used too.

"Guffingfordi", Tim said with a smirk as he opened the cork. "A gift from one of their diplomats." His eyes squinted a little as he read the label. "A full-bodied creamy textured wine, where subtle citrus and apricot notes combine with delicate barrel fermented flavours." Tim looked up, his cheeks flushing a little as inadvertently he looked right into Jason’s eyes. "I.. ah... will just pour this I guess." The Knootian began to carefully fill the three glasses, spilling a little on his desk as he did so.

Jason laughed "A walking wine seller’s guide! Are all Knootians so useful?"

"Useful?", Tim replied, Jasons laugh throwing him off even more before his face formed itself into the default diplomatic smile he had taught himself to make in these situations. "Heh, I suppose we have a knack for that sort of thing..."

"What else do you have a 'knack' for?" Jason almost purred the words and very deliberately moved allowing Gregs hand to slid easily over him…

He just had to make sure that Knootoss would be willing to pay for it, or at least surrounding areas if it so wished to buy land. He was prepared to offer a very generous proposal, in which Knootoss would acquire about a fifth of Etarosi Haven. Novalis' people had already done the math, and estimated that it would cost the Knootians approximately 400 million EC, and that was a drastic discount.

He sat down, and began to compose the letter. He offered for the meeting to be in Hvittsted, and decided that such a matter would require his personal presence. It would indeed be the first bilateral meeting that Novalis would partake.

Greetings,

I would like to have us meet in Hvittsted sometime in the very near future in order to discuss the transfer of territory, and figure out the best way to conduct the transition. Also, I am interested in hearing what price the Knootian government is willing to pay for Hvittsted itself (we are accepting a mininum of fifty million EC), and to determine whether the DDR is willing to pay another 400 million EC to acquire a fifth of Etarosi Haven.

I would suggest the old Lietuv National Museum, because there is a very charming parlor where we could discuss the matter in comfort.

Obviously, I would also like to discuss other matters of importance, such as VERITAS, the Concordat, our possible evaluation of Martian territorial acquisitions, and Knootian interests so that we may better position ourselves on the international stage.

With gratitude and thanks,

Xirnes Novalis
