World Cup Introduction:

For more information on the World Cup, its History, how it works, who runs it, and the competitions related to it, check out the World Cup Wiki Site (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/World_Cup).

The NSWC is a tournament for any NS nation who signs up. This World Cup is about to start its 25th competition, and your nation can take part! Every team is given a rank based on their performances in previous Cups, and the starting rank is 150 (the Current 'best team in the world' is Sarzonia, with a rank of 1) See: KPB Rankings (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/KPB_ranking_system)

Scores are generated using either a Java program or through various or MS Excel sheet 'scorinators' which use random numbers, weighted by ranking and RP bonus to produce the scores.

It is encouraged for Nations to RP - roleplay - their matches, team rosters, players and such. Good RPs will help raise your chance of winning (especially in the Baptism of Fire and Colony Cup). Please note: A lot of RPs does not guarantee goals or wins, but your chances are improved or this happening. i.e. Two debutant, Rank 150, nations play each other. One has RP'd a few times, the other has not. The nation who has participated should have the better probability of victory, but still has a chance of a Win, Loss or Draw.

RPs can be Team Roster announcements, fan comments, press conferences, media stories, anything about the game, as long as you've kept to the score as posted or TGd to you by the host/scorer.

For any other questions you may have, please see the World Cup FAQs article on NSwiki. (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/World_Cup_FAQs) - Courtesy of Starblaydia

The longest-running sports-competition in NationStates reaches its Silver Jubilee tournament: the Football (Soccer) World Cup. Please do specify if you have not participated before.

If your nation is new to the World Cup, you will be able to take part in the preliminary Baptism of Fire Cup (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/Baptism_of_Fire) competition.
If this is your first Cup, please indicate whether you wish to be registered for the Baptism of Fire or not.

Puppets have to post with their nation and identify their master. One Puppet per Master nation, and you may only enter a puppet once you have already competed in a World Cup'

Alasdair I Frosticus
02-09-2005, 00:55
After some careful consideration, the Basileus of the Holy and Puissant Empire of Alasdair I Frosticus has deigned to permit the Holy Empire (hosts of WC 2) to enter a team into the World Cup for the first time since World Cup 7.

While this contravenes current Holy Empire policy to minimise contact between the Holy Empire and ordinary physical reality, it pleases His Majesty to think that the Holy Empire will thus become one of the very few nations to have participated in both the first and twenty-fifth tournaments. This is likely to be the Holy Empire's only World Cup participation for the foreseeable future, but His Majesty does have these little whims from time to time.

It is likely that all home games will be played in the Archregimancy, which is a territory of the Holy Empire.

All Hail the Basileus!

[OOC: I'm not sure what the rules are here... Technically the Archregimancy is a puppet of Alasdair I Frosticus rather than the other way around. But Alasdair I Frosticus hasn't participated since WC 7, so presumably won't have any ranking points allowing it to enter puppets. Hopefully the Archregimancy's participation in WC 24 - where it will have gained ranking points - will get over any potential puppetry problems]

Well, you can always simply sign up The Archregimancy, then say "Alasdair.. puppet of archregimency signs up"

then come next cup, just swap them :P

And I can confirm that I already have signed up the Archregimancy. Quite early on, at that. So if Alasdair I Frosticus needs to technically be a puppet of the Archregimancy for World Cup 25 to get in, I'm happy to go with that. No arguments from me - I'm just trying to make sure that there's no confusion over the relationship between the nations.

Not me, though. ;)

The Archregimancy has been ordered by Alasdair I Frosticus to take another opportunity to punish heathens for their iniquities, or suffer at the hands of heretics in order to strengthen the soul (depending on the final score).

Without meaning to seem fussy, I posted this between Sarzonia's and Oliverry's sign-ups, but the Archregimancy isn't on the official sign-up list at the beginning of the thread. Just a minor oversight, I'm sure, but thought I'd better point it out just in case....

PopularFreedom
03-09-2005, 00:46
Greetings,

It is with pleasure that the nation of PopularFreedom (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/PopularFreedom) will be sending the Brunstone Grizzlies (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/Brunstone_Grizzlies), champions of the Pearson Cliffs Football Association (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/Pearson_Cliffs_Football_Association) to represent our nation at the World Cup.

The team will be from henceforth called the PopularFreedom Grizzlies for the remainder of the tournament.

We apologize that the North Beach Sharks (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/North_Beach_Sharks) cannot participate during World Cup 25 however the Bay Football League (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/Bay_Football_League) will be running their season during World Cup 25 and therefore we have decided to use the champions of the second tier league in PopularFreedom (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/PopularFreedom) to represent us (plus in light of the Sharks horrible performance at World Cup 24 many thought it was only fair to give the Grizzlies a shot).

Sincerely, Prime Minister Bayda

The Trebnak Destroyers, national team for the nation of Trebnak, request the chance to participate and show what a great fascist nation can do against the communist swine and democratic vermin that dare foul the football pitch that we do play upon.

-Commander Pauline Soros

OOC: Trebnak is run by the same individual who runs PopularFreedom (though the two nations barely know one another IC except for the Jodoski incident in World Cup 24. If possible if you could put Trebnak and PopularFreedom in the same group so that I can do a roleplay on Johan Jodoski's return to PopularFreedom). :)

IC: Satan, alarmed at the rapid progress made by the holy Orthodox monks of The Archegimency, has decided to put the souls of heretics and oppresors of the faith on loan to murderer and former manager Jene-Rene Filon, thereby hindering the progress of the true Church as he so often has in the past.

OOC: This is the new "funny puppet" of NMS. Anyone with any knowledge of key figures in heretical orthodox movements please share. Here's the current list:

Arius, bishop of Alexandria
Nestorius, patriarch of Constantinople
Leo V(?), first of the Iconoclasts

Oppressors:

Doge Enrico Dandolo, leader of the 4th crusade
Baldwin I, first of the Latin Emperors
Nero
Caligula

1) Sign-ups updated to Kudlastan, 58 nations signed-up. Shearer Heaven and The Peoples whatver removed, Alan Shearer Heaven added in their place.

2) Unfortunately, Mister Geordie, these things are done by nation, not by user, so you will have to start your path up the rankings from scratch, thought it does mean you get in the Baptism of Fire again.

3) First post updated to reflect the fact that you can't enter a puppet if its your first time in the cup.

4) And, please can people read the information. Especially this bit.

Please remove ForsakeEarthForTheSky from the sign-up list, get rid of it, ignore my stupidity. I did not mean to RP with it, I don't plan to RP with it, it doesn't belong in the World Cup.

Wasn't my idea - Lowland Clans asked me. I had no plans to bid myself originally, but after Lowland Clans asked I felt it was reasonable to go ahead.

Obviously the Vilita / FMJphoenix hosting bid will be considered the strong favourite - there's no point in pretending otherwise - and eyebrows will understandably be raised at having a nation as new as the Archregimancy entering a co-bid, but I don't see anything wrong in giving it a go. If nothing else I'll enjoy the RP.

And besides - OOC - the only other time one of my nations has hosted a WC was at the second attempt. Though that was admittedly World Cup 2 ;)

Finally, at the risk of seeming overly defensive, as Kaze Progressa has already pointed out, the Archregimancy reached the playoffs in the recent qualifiers ahead of KP - and then came within one goal in the return leg of becoming the first unranked team in nearly 50 years to reach the tournament proper. Throw in a decent upcoming Cup of Harmony, and there's no reason why the team's rank for WC25 wouldn't be decent enough to stand a reasonable chance of qualification irrespective of host status.

The red tape that is an essential part of Hell has kept us from signing up for the Baptism of Fire, but since even more dire consequences than usual were being threatened if we missed the tourney, we will now sign up.

Also, we'd like to bid to host the BoF, so that the term "Baptism of Fire" takes on real meaning. Archregimancy has first dibs on co-hosting, and I'm currently awaiting his reply to my offer.

FYI: the BoF is hosted by Vilita, who chooses a co-host for each tourney. Generally, that co-host has at least competed in a WC at least once before, but that's up to Vil, essentially.

Gosh, it's nice to be popular. I can't move right now for invitations to co-host tournaments. See, Orthodox monks are just a fun bunch o' guys to hang out with.

However, it seems that other arrangements are in place for the BoF:

FYI: the BoF is hosted by Vilita, who chooses a co-host for each tourney. Generally, that co-host has at least competed in a WC at least once before, but that's up to Vil, essentially.

So on that basis, I obviously have to politely decline.

And with that, we'd better stop clogging up the sign-up thread before our monastic hands get gently slapped.

What do I have to do to host the World Cup?

Its a little rule that one can't bid to host a Cup in their first appearance. There's a certain... culture... associated with the NSWC (see the arguements about dice in the World Cup Discussion Thread (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=293066) for instance), and we feel you can only know what is required of a host after having been in a World Cup Campaign.

Plus there's the fact that as you've just arrived, we don't know if you're just enthusiastic for the first week or actually dedicated. And that we have no idea who you are in general, either. Would London have got the 2012 Olympics without a media campaign and support from Britain's sporting stars of old? Unlikely.

So, thankyou for the interest, Swilatia, but no World Cup 25 hosting for you, hehe. RP your ass off in WC25, join us on the IRC channel #sport (those two are open invitations to everyone, actually - RP and come chat :D ) then if you like what we do here you can find a bid partner and try to host a World Cup!

Now you guys should be starting Pre-RP threads and roster threads, and telegramming all signed up nations with these links. While telegramming, you make note of any ceased or inactive nations, which would allow teams that signup from this point on the enter the cup.
What do you mean??

Sign-ups updated to Newcommunist Republics, 102 nations signed up, 14 of which are puppets and 30 eligible for the BoF.

Plus the hosts will be Kaze Progressa and Audioslavia!

10 Groups of 10, anyone?
Vilita's found that Princev are no longer in existance, so that's down to 101.

101 + Spookyville = 102 again.

However, considering Hiiraan signed up for World Cup 24 thinking it was the next cup (when it was almost at the quarter-finals), we have advised them to sign up in this (the correct) thread, because otherwise they won't be in.

We await their response.

I've counted 101 altogether. Just looking to see who i've missed now. Princev have been omitted, with Spookyville added. Metfield will be given the benefit of the doubt for now, but if there is an active user ready to take his/her place (in the event of there being more than 102 signups) then they'll be shuftied out, if they still haven't logged in of course.

Edit:
It was Limbrogidlia who had been missed out. Duly added.

So, the full 102. Still time for anyone to cease though, so we'll still be taking backup sign-ups, especially if Mr. Metfield doesn't log in/ceases.

In the hope this is useful to the hosts, or anyone else.

USEFUL!?!??!? Where the heck have you been the last 24 cups?!

I took Audioslavia's list, formatted it and fed it through Wget to get each country's RSS feed. I then did a fast&dirty QBasic program, and extracted the "Last Activity" field from the feed. Note that the d/l and the extraction took about 5 minutes. I got this:

*looks around* mhmm right! :P

Note especially Brazillico (8 days with no activity), Metfield (9 days ditto), Kipto-Mare (14 days), One Red Dot (also 14 days), Svecia (14 also), and especially Pedriana, who has been inactive for 32 days, and obviously must be using the "Vacation" setting or it would've been deleted by now.

Pedriana is Bedistan's puppet, and is prone to inactivity in non-cup times, though it's still worthy of a proper slap!

Svecia and One Red Dot usually show up at some point. The one I'd be worried most about is of course Metfield, who as stated has not logged in virtually since joining. It's a far safer bet that someone who logs in once will not return than it is for someone who's logged in... more than once :)

By the way...

wow.

and wow. Good Work!

Um, so there are 102 signed-up, including the hosts, right? And the hosts don't have to go thru the group-stuff round, right? And it's gonna be 10 by 10 groups, right? So there's room for 102 people, right?

So I'm in, right? Right?? Please say so.

To be fair to them, if it weren't for the BoF needing to send out telegrams I could just as well be in such shape. I haven't *participated* in Nationstates in well over a year, I just log directly into the forums and keep my nation active for... well common sense purposes :)

But that's what no-one's told me! Did I make it or not?

Should I figure if no-one's said "NO" it means "yes"? Or should I figure since no-one's said "YES" it means I should slink off cause I'm not in? :(

Or are they still working on it?

And how to they tell the ones who are in? Is there an announcement I missed? Do they PM us?

Every post in this thread is OOC so your previous posts just came off as childish.

There is the source of our problem. I read (and have just reread) the rules/laws/guides/"stickies", for NationStates>>NationStates forum, and took away the message that all post not specifically marked OOC, or in a thread marked OOC, were required to be In Character.

All rules have exceptions, often from tradition, and I guess "WC signup" threads are such exceptions.

I regret the confusion, and the bad feelings that came from it. I now know, and won't forget.

And thank you for inviting me to the BoF. I'm sure you felt aggravated, so especial thanks for putting aside your feelings.

So Metfield has signed in since the last list was compiled.

Just thought I'd also create the reserve list here, too, seeing as those keeping the list up to date haven't done one.

Reserves: (4)

Alemeinia
Chicanada
Pagajeucianism
Giant Zucchini

We also wondered if the hosts had considered using fifteen groups of seven, as this would create 105 places in qualifying, enough for all those showing an interest so far.

Also, if puppets are being replaced to let in people's first nations, Shearer Hell would like to put itself forward as one of those to be left out.

As co-hosts, Kaze Progressa and Audioslavia are exempt from the qualification stages. The remaining 100 teams will be divided into ten groups of ten teams, playing each other home and away with the top three in each group qualifying (no playoffs will take place).

The draw for these groups will use a pot system, whereby the top ten teams are in one pot, the next ten teams in another, and so on. This ensures the groups are relatively similar in standard. The full list of teams in each pot will be revealed in the next fifteen minutes.
