OOC: New character-based RP interest thread

Gruenberg
24-08-2005, 23:33
The majority of character-based RPs on NS are closed, and/or have been going for some time. This is quite understandable, and it is through this that some of them have become very good indeed. Nonetheless, I'd like to start, or be involved in starting, a new one. By character-based, I don't especially mean 'RPing as your nation's leader/military hero' - I more mean an RP unrelated to one's nation. Thus I might be Bob or Cyril, and not 'Gruenberg'. (I don't intend on being Bob or Cyril.)

Anyway, my initial thoughts are that a pretty predictable fantasy or sci-fi type RP would be the easiest to set up, and the format most likely to generate some interest. My only thing would be no Jedi. Please. Beyond that, though, I'm really looking for anyone, with or without experience, who's interested.

Finally, most RPs of this nature ask for experience. I'm not doing so because I haven't been involved in many myself, so it would be deeply hypocritical. That is in turn likely to deter experienced RPers, I know, but you're still welcome. (And if you think getting involved would be beneath you, feel free to make a puppet and burrow.) All I ask is reasonable standards of spelling and grammar: I won't be a Nazi about it, btu i od espext 2 b abel 2 reedd wot u iz writing.

Any interest? Whatsoever?
Kurona
24-08-2005, 23:41
Sounds tempting. Sure. But I can't do a Sci-fi, RP, as Kurona comes from a Post-Modern Region. Not to mention my economy is really poor. Fantasy, and Drama can work for me. If I'm not on the forums find "KURONA" and Telegraph me.
Gruenberg
24-08-2005, 23:46
Ah, yes, but my point was this wouldn't especially need to be nation-based. It could just be various characters, and the fact that you'd be posting as Kurona largely irrelevant. Nonetheless, thanks for registering interest: if something develops, I'll make sure to let you know.
Theao
24-08-2005, 23:46
I'd be up for it. Are you looking for a sci-fi/future tech idea, fantasy tech idea, or something else?
Gruenberg
24-08-2005, 23:48
I'm looking for anything that people will be interested in. If you have a particular opinion on what you'd be really interested in, then register it. My own inclination is for something fantasy-ish, but I'd be interested in a sci-fi or even just a plain MT-one too - as long as it wasn't endless techwank. I'm interested in people, not OMGZORZ ION CANNONS!!!!!!1!!

Excellent. Keep an eye on this thread, and I'll TG you when we start up. Any preferences on what sort of RP it is?
Gruenberg
25-08-2005, 00:09
Thus far, all who have applied are in:

Gruenberg
Kurona
Theao
Kanami
Aqua Anu

Please register any particular interest regarding theme or character now, so that we can start working out what kind of RP it will be. (And spread the word.)
Theao
25-08-2005, 00:10
I'm up for anytech.
Gruenberg
25-08-2005, 00:21
Sigh. Okay. Well it's looking like whoever expresses a preference will get their way. And to stress, this is still open, so anyone else is welcome to join up.
Theao
25-08-2005, 00:25
Why not try a cross tech world? Essentially some characters from fantasy worlds, some from modern, some from past/pre-historic, some future.
Gruenberg
25-08-2005, 00:31
Ok. Then it's settled. We'll come up with a scenario whereby people can RP whatever tech level they want. I'm sorry to keep telling everyone else to contribute ideas when I'm not myself, but I just think more people will get involved if they get a say in what happens.

So ideas might revolve around:

- some sort of fantasy world, where magic enable FT characters to enter the fray;
- a sci-fi situation involving time-travel;
- something generally along those lines but not so specific.

Once more, input please. And this is character-based: I don't care whether your nation is MT or FT, small or big, communist or capitalist. This is about people.

Suggestion for character template
Name:
Age:
Gender:
Race:
Height:
Build:
Eyes:
Hair:
Tech level:
Brief Bio:

Also it could be something like FTers get stranded on a MT world, due to space-ship malfunctions or some such, while the fantasy peoples reason for being there, the result of a bad spell.
Gruenberg
25-08-2005, 00:47
Right. Thank you Theao, you are officially a god.

Here's what the basic idea will be. A space ship, of some description, with some crew, will crash on a planet. The majority will die, of course - but a few will survive. They will encounter on this planet a range of peoples - including, if anyone so wishes, those with fantastical powers.

Quite what the story is...I have yet to decide.

Please follow Theao's proposed format, with the following additions:

- back up everything. If you say someone's a member of the efibqbfqieobfioeqbfilq race, then explain what that is;
- please also post any additional information we need to know;
- pictures are allowed but not essential.

You may, at this stage, have a maximum of three characters, ship or planet wise.

I'll TG everyone with details on the morrow, but please continue to post ideas, info and new sign-ups here.

Findhorn
25-08-2005, 10:29
I'm in, I'm in!

I have three characters who've been wandering round waiting for an RP that suits them.

One is a gormless lad from my second nation, Findhorn. Findhorn is a non-magical nation but its people have the ability to be awakened to magic (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=8386546&postcount=37). At the moment, Findhorn is looking at playing a tiny part in its region's grandiose space plans. But this poor kid is too eager to wait; hitches to a spaceport and stows away/becomes galley hand/whatever ... you know the tale.

Two already exists. She's Flick, a very ordinary girl from the far from mystic land of Baulkham Hills, in Sydney ... until she was shanghaied into attending Maritzar boarding school, where she acquired some sort of healing or microscopic reorganising or whatever power. Now she's become a Bard, wandering from one colonial outpost to another; valued for her knowledge of Old Earth laws, which the Bards teach and remember via folk songs, but occasionally unappreciated by those who would prefer to forget the rule of law.

Three is a witch from my main nation, Ardchoille. Her problem is that she's nuts about technology, machines, and the like, and thinks they can somehow be reconciled with magic. (She's the inventor of the one just installed in the Strangers' Bar, which operates under the Wiccan Rede: An thou harm none, do what thou wilt.) She would, naturally, be accompanied by an Ardchoille Cat (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=8501111&postcount=83).

So, do any of these fit in with what you have in mind?

(Uh, I'd be posting as Ardchoille. Sorry, I always get my puppets mixed up.)
Gruenberg
25-08-2005, 12:28
Findhorn: that's fine. Don't worry about puppet-confusion: so long as I know that Findhorn=Ardchoille, you can post as either. You can use any or all of the characters you've proposed: the first one is an obvious choice, but the other two are interesting too. Please also let us know any extra details, and whether they will be members of the ship's crew, or already resident on the planet.

I'll get some characters together myself, and please everyone else start putting in ideas. Then I'll write an intro post, and we can get going. I will make this semi-open: at present, only those who have signed-up may participate, but if other people want to get in, they can apply (by TG to Gruenberg) to enter.
Ardchoille
25-08-2005, 12:58
Oh, yeah. If you pick the witch, that's two characters, because her Cat companion is intelligent too.

Re plot, here are some suggestions. SF fans will probably recognise them from many a B-movie:

How's about they discover something on the planet that will in some way answer some great question, or Save the Galaxy? But they can't get the answer, or solution, or whatever, to where it will do the most good, because (boom-tish!) Their Communications Have Been Destroyed In The Crash.

And they can't use the communications devices of the Crash Planet, because:
the Crash Planet denizens are too technologically undeveloped, so they have to either build a technology or work out how to do it with what exists, or
the Crash Planet people have communications devices, but it's against their religion to use them to contact the Evil Worlds (ie, our lot's homes), so our mob have to persuade them; or
they have them and they use them, but they think that what they hear are the Voices of the Gods, and any attempt by our lot to disabuse them will undermine their religion, which is all that's keeping them from a genocidal global war.

We could also pinch Star Trek's Prime Directive (about not interfering in any pre-contact civilisation) to add further complications.

As to what it is that must be conveyed so urgently:

evidence that two back-home nations (planets?) that are on the brink of war are in fact both the descendants of the folk of the Crash Planet, and must unite to save their progenitors from some impending disaster (an unavoidable asteroid, perhaps? That would mean our lot are at risk, too, giving them a reason to work Real Fast Now.)
the cure for a plague that is currently decimating back-home. (Complicate by having the cure made in some way that will disadvantage the people of Crash Planet, whom our lot have come to admire -- say, the cure lies in a scarce plant that they need if they are to achieve full intelligence/adulthood/reproduction.)
something that will reveal evil-doing by some high-up back home (eg, using Crash Planet citizens as slaves). Does the high-up have backers among our lot? Is anyone else trying to suppress the evidence? Why?

I don't mean that we should just pick an idea and act it out. That'd be boring for us and for anyone reading. I'm throwing these into the arena for everyone to savage, and hoping that something will prompt someone to say, "Hey, look, let's not have them X, let's have them Y first and then they X, but ..."

Or, "The whole SF thing is stupid, but why not go medieval, and then ...".

Okay, bring on the lions!
Gruenberg
25-08-2005, 13:09
Oh, yeah. If you pick the witch, that's two characters, because her Cat companion is intelligent too.

Well, I prefer the first two characters. But it's really your choice.

--plot suggestions--

I think it's safe to assume their communication shit will be pretty squelched. And let's assume the planet they crash doesn't have electronic interplanetary communications gear, so we'll do that. As for the discovery, again I'm open to ideas. Personally, the idea of them discovering, or striving to discover, some secret, and the idea of there being a twist - that its discovery/use will in some way endanger them or the planet's inhabitants, or threaten to disturb some natural order - appeals.

As you say, we don't want to write a story now and just RP it happening - that's a little dull, and we want to leave room for developments. Nonetheless, if we know basically what's going on to start with, then it'll be more organized.

New people still welcome.

Good to see others interested in character RPs. As a major player here on these forums, I have become quite well known for my RPs, as well as a few other notable names such as Assington, The Golden Simatar, Kaukalostan, Mercenary Soldiers, Wandering Argonians, and more. I have even gone so far as to arrange a region specifically for character RPers, an attempt to bring us together so we can easily collaborate on new RPs/ current RPs.

The region is Fatal Terrain, if you're wondering. Any type of character RP tech is acceptable, yet there is a criteria to join this region (an attempt to keep the RPers accountable, and to know that one can RP with them fairly). We've had RPs that were fantasy based, realistic, or a mixture of both, so essentially, any RP can be about anything, so long as it is character based.

(Regional ads go in Gameplay.)

Right, I have my two proposed characters.

Name: Sai Jendan
Rank: Ensign*
Age: 22
Gender: Male
Race: Human
Physical: 5'11"; medium build; light brown eyes; dark blonde hair.
Tech level: Future
Brief Bio: A recent graduate of officer school, but thus far relatively undistinguished. Unsure if he really fits into a military career. Member of the ship's crew.

* Assuming a military command structure similar to that of the modern US navy. If not, then a junior officer.

Name: Green Sellett
Age: 19
Gender: Female
Physical: 5'8"; slender; pale blue eyes; long blonde hair.
Tech level: Technically future, but not especially familiar with technology in general. Generally more fantasy-style.
Brief Bio: A passenger on board the ship. A young witch with only fairly basic magical powers but a keen feel for the spirit world.

I know regional ads go in gameplay, but going there, and no one would have seen it. This was just a quick note to you if you're interested, that's all. If you're not interested, just disregard the idea.
Ardchoille
25-08-2005, 13:44
Thanks, Gruenberg. Yeah, I think I'll go with the over-eager space-farer. The other two would take too much writing because they've got more complex motives.

Besides, it gives me so much scope for dumb-kid stuff.

So: I'll get a bio done for tomorrow. Hopefully, someone on the crew will somehow acquire him at the spaceport. If he doesn't end up in the galley he could be an extra pair of hands for the ship's doctor, as he's been brought up by his granny, the village herbalist.
Ardchoille
25-08-2005, 14:24
Hmm. I'm in two minds about the ship being crewed by military types (air force types?).

On the one hand, you've got at least two lovely possibilities for post-crash tension:

The civilians among the passengers resent being told what to do by ship-jockeys who hardly ever spend time planetside/think of planets as "stops", not "homes". (Maybe some colonists among passengers?)

The civilians (your witch, for example?) are nervous about the possibility of "if it moves, shoot it" reactions from the military towards the strange denizens of Crash Planet. (Maybe I should bring in Flick, too; she's dead leery of soldiers).

On the other hand, if the crew is civilian you miss out on those but you've got other possibilities:

The captain, who owns the ship with shares for the crew, has a dubious past, possibly humorously so, and is/was up to something this trip, too (contact with pirate base? illegal export/imports? smuggling some political bod to a refuge?} but now the crash has mucked up all his/her schemes.

The captain is being pushed into a certain line of action by what he/she knows the owners want (eg, a good profit on the voyage) but some other factor (love of passenger? humanitarian regard for Crash Planet folk? vaguely patriotic feeling for United Planets Federation, or whatever you call it, because he/she sees something that could be exploited for the general good but the owners will want it for themselves?) is urging him/her to defy the owners and act for him/herself.

Not to mention that, in either case, there's the chance of crew and passengers ganging up against captain/officers, or capt and some passengers against some crew, or ...

Yeah. This is why I don't run my own RPs. Immobilised by choice.

Incidentally, you're probably as happy in your region as I am in mine, but an invitation from Tarlachia's not to be sneezed at.
Gruenberg
25-08-2005, 14:51
I didn't mean to snap at Tarlachia - and thanks, it looks like a very interesting region. For the moment we're trying to sort out our own region for general purposes, and specific ones don't appeal that much to me, but I'll certainly think about it. And thanks for showing some interest.

Ardchoille: the ship doesn't have to have a military crew. But I'd like my character to be in the military. If that means he's just another passenger on board a general cargo ship, then so be it. Like you, I like the idea of military/civilian divisions over what to do next. So, it doesn't really matter whether it's a military or civilian ship as far as I'm concerned.

Am I glad to see that there's a new initiative for Character RPing in NationStates. It's times like these when we need a renewal of fresh ideas.

As you may or may not know by now, I am one of Tarlachia's Fatal Terrain mates, and Gruenberg, your ideas have me interested. If I understand Tarl correctly, he has not offered any invitations as yet, but once this thing gets under way.......who knows.

So, I would like to request to be an observer in this RP idea that you have. I hope to represent Fatal Terrain in this matter, and while I will not be directly involved in any actual RPing for my part, I would like to take a close look at those who are doing so. As the RP gets under way, I may request Tarl to send invitations to Fatal Terrain to those players in the RPer I deem have met the criteria for RPing.

That's all, for now. Am I granted this request?

Name:Alaric Schlagel
Age:35
Gender:Male
Race:Human?
Height:5'11
Build:Lean
Eyes:Silver
Hair:Black
Tech level:Present Tech
Brief Bio:Little is known about Alaric except that he was formerly an Eleusinian-A secret Ravean society that is known to push humans to their physical and mental limits in exchange for special powers. Alaric was cast out of his society for reasons as unknown as the order itself; it is said that he recived several highly coveted abilaties before he was exiled. Alaric carries a powerful pisol and is a good fighter, stays out of most conflicts unless he is angered.

He's a mysterious one, I'll give you that. I'm still not quite sure what powers to give him, but don't worry! It won't be anything Uber-crazy, like transforming into the Hulk or something of the sort.

OoC: While I'm busy with other things and an RP, thus not being able to RP in this one, can I just say good luck. It's rare that we get such a civil RPer as yourself (especially one who makes the older of us feel good about ourselves with your ego boosting comment on being below us ;) ), perhaps in the future I wouldn't mind having an RP with you, although in something more nation related.

I like stories involving the NS world.

Okay, I'm kind of taking two of these characters out of an Anime I watch. So if they ring any bells, well....You'll know.

Name: Margret Burton
Species: Human
Race: White
Gender: Female
Age: 17
Eye color: I'll get back to you
Hair Color: Brown
Build: Young thin, physically healthy
Tech: Modern
Bio: After losing her father and mother, she's pretty much been a bit eccentric. But not really lonsome. Always accomponied by her freind and maid "Eleanore." A wealthy Heriss to her fathers fortune, and rather curious.

Name: Elenore Baker
Species: Human
Race: White
Gender: Female
Age: Unknown (young)
Eye: -
Hair: Brown
Build: Thin, tall, but rather strong
Tech: Modern
Bio: Grandaughter of Margret's Father, and loyal to the family, Elenore swore to her dying employeer to look after Margret. Thus she's fiercley protective of her. Almost like a big-sister.
Kurona
26-08-2005, 02:31
Name: Sasha Keeding
Species: Human
Race: White
Gender: Female
Age: 15
Eye: Purple
Hair: Red
Build: Medium, strong
Technology: Early-Modern. (many things still suprise her)
Bio: A poor farm girl, from the deep open prarie parts of Kurona. Since she was young she wanted to get off the farm, and explore the world. She left home, and boarded a rickety wooden sail-ship ship, and crossed some very stormy seas. She had no idea how technologically diffrent many nations of the world. It was pure culture shock. Even the idea of actually being able to blast off into the stars seemed like a good book. She was amazed when she boarded the ship to go into space. [And this is where our journey begins]

Okay, here's my guy:

Name:Peregrine Pennecuick (pronounced "pennycook"; it's a real name, honest.)
Age: 17
Gender: Male
Race: Human, sub-group Caucasian. Ancestry Celtic.
Height: 6'2" and rising.
Build: gangling. Thin, with the bones of the bigger man he'll be.
Eyes: Hazel
Hair: Coppermop.
Tech level: Modernish.
Brief Bio: Perry grew up on Gran's croft in Findhorn, where the way of life hasn't changed for hundreds of years. But in the rare times when there was no farmwork to do you'd be likely to find him playing on the floor under the kitchen table, or sitting by the big fire at night while Granny sorted herbs, happily logged in on his portable PC, Googling for the stars.

By the time he finished high school (last year, in fact), Findhorn was thinking about joining the Lavinium space program. Thinking about? Perry knew how long that was likely to take. There came a night when he slung on his backpack, kissed Granny goodbye and took off for the nearest functioning spaceport.

Why night? Because Granny told him it was the luckiest time to leave. Grannies in Findhorn have a way of knowing things like that.
------------
Okay. Sorry about going overboard on the plot suggestions. I'd intended to keep to general ideas, then found that it was easier to write them than to explain them. But I think that took me into what's properly your field, Gruenberg. So please write it off as a buzzing in your ears, and hit us with some nice surprises.

Or nasty ones.

Sorry I'm late. Like Kanami, I too am taking a character out of contex.

Name: Ichigo

Species: Half-Breed [I][U](Felinehumaness)
Gender: Female
Race: White
Age: 12
Hair Color: Pink
Eye Color: Pink
Build: Moderate size, cat ears and a tail, no wiskers, but has traits of a cat.
Tech Level: Modern, but with super powers.
Bio: Abandond as an infant, she's grown up all alone in the world. After all who wants a freaky half-bread in a human based society? Ichigo has been taught by various masters of magic, how to weild inner powers of her strange half-breeded DNA. But she's not your garden variety super hero. She roams at night, doing what ever needs to be done, and eating plenty of fish from Aqua Anu's lush oceans. However, she can get excited over a the sight of yarn-ball, milk, or a small moth to claw at. With her cat like re-flexiss, she can sense weather patterns, and danger. There's no creeping up on this girl.

Thanks! :)

I think I'll get this started now - I'll write an intro. Please, though, keep submitting ideas, and there's still room for others to sign up. I'll write it JUST about my 2 characters - others are then free to decide whether theirs are on the ship or planet, and whether they're injure or not.

If there are no objections, it'll be called 'Starting In The Wrong Way'.

Ok, lets get started, but first, one more character:

Name:Lunac Goca
Age:15
Gender:Male
Race:Krae-Sern*
Build:4 feet, 8 inches, deep baratone voice, dark skin-eyes-hair, short and stocky, like all his people.
Tech Level: early 1900's western civilization
Powers:Has unheard-of yet mostly untapped magical abilities, but has little control over them, and they are usually triggered only by strong emotions. He does not yet know that this is because he is passively possesed by some sort of evil spirit.

*The Krae-Sern (KRAY-sern) are native to Crash Planet. They are physically like the pygmy people of Ziare, (or whatever they're calling it now days...the Democratic Socialist Republic of Africa and Whatcuemacallit?), socially like feudal Japan, and technologically like the Western World at the turn of the 20th century.

I've started it. If ship people could post first - it's post crash, but you can post background, and their experience of the crash if you want. Planet people can post too, and can add pre-crash stuff - daily routine and so on, for background. Keep OOC stuff, including flames about my being a pretentious dick and worhsipful comments on Ryan Adams's distilled genius to this thread, if that's ok. Hope it works out as a good RP - remember, just get involved! I won't be snotty about regularity - you all have lives (or other RPs) - but try to be vaguely active so that it doesn't lag.

Thanks for your interest: still time to sign up if you're not yet involved, and outsiders should feel free to comment/advise/join in hymns of praise to Ryan Adams/ask me what the fuck I'm on. But here, not in the IC thread, if poss.

Alpha Hive
28-08-2005, 04:18
Hmm. Is there any space for a nanotech-augmented, power-armoured, heavily-armed supremacist from a society of similarly enhanced anti-baseline interstellar asteroid colonies?

It sounds wanky because, well, this is my wanky spacedynation. I'll try not to be "in your face" with it. Eukk, bad pun!

If you don't mind, I present unto you Her Ladyship Ekaterina Maria Korsakova of Theta Hive;

Name: Korsakova, Ekaterina Maria (Maria is the name of the ancestor she's a clone of; everyone not a serf in Hive culture is a clone).
Age: 37
Gender: Female
Race: Homo sapiens sapiens, but don't say that! The Hive Lords describe themselves as "Abhuman" and "Homo sapiens superior", but the difference is in their nanotechnology, not their genetics.
Tech level: Future

Notes: As a member of the Hive's military aristocracy, Ekaterina has quite extensive nano-augmentation. She has increased strength, stamina, healing (she can, given a month or two, regenerate severed limbs), toxin protection, an augmented immune system, can consciously alter her neurochemistry (free drug secretion), can analyse chemical compounds in food and in the air (augmented senses of taste and smell), better hearing and eyesight, and if that wasn't enough her nano acts as a built-in, portable computer network. I said she was wanky, now didn't I?

Armament: Since the Hiver aristocracy is a *military* aristocracy, Ekaterina comes complete with her own power armour and an impressive array of weapons both built-in and seperate. The power armour, in addition to boosting her strength and endurance yet further, can hold twelve hour's air supply or replenish by filtering oxygen out of some quite toxic environments, including seawater. And it has rockets, which would be useful if this wasn't groundside. As it is, they're mostly added weight. The power armour has a railgun mounted in each forearm. And I suppose if you had to you could prise off the jewels for trade goods ... yes, the aristocracy puts jewels on their armour. All that is nuclear powered.

Outside of the armour, the skinsuit which is standard uniform for Hiver aristocracy is also armour itself, although compared to the power armour it's a lot less powerful; all it does is harden upon impact.

And then there's a .44 calibre handgun (because some places, a railgun is overkill).

As to why this walking siege weapon happens to be unfortunately sharing the same planet as you; Theta Hive has a nice little fiefdom in a distant corner of the galaxy, where they attacked and brutally subjugated a baseline-human world, and they've been committing creative atrocities upon the population for the past generation or so. She was en route there from Theta Hive itself, but aristocratic intrigues forced her to avoid taking the normal Hive vessels, and she had the misfortune to happen to be upon the wrong flight. What a calamity.
Divinity Corporate

Score. A chance to jump into something. Prepare for the madness!

Name: Boswald Naade
Age: 62
Gender: Male
Race: Human (from the Island of Narrowed Eyes, an equatorial island quite far from almost everywhere; think Polynesian)
Height: 5'8"
Build: Stocky to festively plump
Eyes: Dark blue
Hair: Gray
Tech level: Modern tech with a few truly bizarre twists; after all, the island was founded by eccentric millionaires, inventors, and philosophers)
Brief Bio: Often viewed by the other members of the Cult of Divinity Corporate (which will be better explained in the RP) as the obnoxious little brother who always tells lies, Boswald Naade is perhaps the unluckiest resident of the Island of Narrowed Eyes. His assignment as Chief Astronomical and Astrological Observer/Chronicler requires him to observe the heavens in search of the Gods (nothing ever comes up) and record what he finds (which, again, is just a lot of stars and planets).

How Boswald Naade ended up on this particular planet is a mystery that he'll go into a great deal of detail talking about.

Cetaganda
28-08-2005, 05:08
Name: Radek Fizgandledore

Species: Human
Gender: Male
Race: Northern European
Age: 131
Hair Color: White
Eye Color: Blue
Build: Tall, moderate build
Tech Level: FT homeland + wizardry ala Duane
Bio: Fizgandledore had a lengthy career as an agent of the Cetagandan Preternatural Affairs Office, which culminated with a lengthy stay in the position of Archmage, chief psionicist and wizard of Cetagandan. Several years ago, after finding a suitable replacement in the form of young Kyle sa'Diason, and retired. He then set off for parts unknown, ostensibly seeking out a good beach to lie on for a while. He has only been in intermittent contact with home since, usually to demand a new supply of Granny Slag or give unwanted advice to his harried successor.

Equipment: Wizards' Manual, various magical artifacts acquired during travels, MREs and a great deal of Granny Slag products

Name: Skaffen-Arcansah

Species: Combat Drone
Gender: Male
Race: Mark X, Mods ELPS (Escort, Long-term Self-Sufficient, Psionic Instrumentality Package, Science Package)
Age: 4
Hair Color: Grey body with variable-color trim
Eye Color: n/a
Build: suitcase size (pics here (http://web.ics.purdue.edu/~chigbee/Cetaganda/general/escort_drone_1.JPG), here (http://web.ics.purdue.edu/~chigbee/Cetaganda/general/escort_drone_2.JPG), and here (http://web.ics.purdue.edu/~chigbee/Cetaganda/general/escort_drone_3.JPG))
Tech Level: Future
Bio: Skaffen's production line is one of the first fully sentient combat drones of this size. While very expensive due to the highly compressed computer core and other miniaturized equipment he carries, he is the very model of modern protective technology. unfortunately for him, he was assigned to protect an eccentric old man. He was foisted upon Fizgandledore during one of his rare visits home by a worried protege, with instructions to keep him reasonably intact. Normally, following someone who is randomly wandering the worlds and often getting into trouble would be great fun, but Skaffen has been dismayed to find that he skills are largely unneeded, due in part to Zifgandledore's own skill at protecting himself, and more importantly to his blind luck (Fortune favors the insane and/or senile). This has led to Skaffen-Arcanesaw becoming more than a little bitter.

Equipment: Ten ERASERs, four gravimetric manipulators, four semi-independent dogbrain knife missiles, Mk II effector system, defense field, stasis unit, microfabbery.

Bedou
28-08-2005, 14:54
Name: Bedou, TechNomads, The Faithful, The Hospitable
Age:--
Gender:--
Race:Human
Height:--
Build:--
Eyes:--
Hair:--
Tech level: ALL
Brief Bio: For this RP alone I would be using morethen Modern Tech. I would have a party of TechNomads on hte Planet surface seeking trade, and resources(their vessel being too small to aid in any kind of rescue) any way whatever about that--think friendly Human Jawa.

Bio: The Bedou TechNomads trace their history back to a planet called Earth, familiar to some myth to others the small planet held a small variety of intelligent life but a vast variety of ideas. The Bedou were at one time members of a large earthly religous order known as Islam. They were respected among other Muslims(that is what followers of Islam are called properly) for their immense devotion. They held a deep openess to technological advance even while swearing off personal wealth as being an unhealth state of mind. This devotion to practicality allowed the Bedou nation to leave Earth ahead of many first world nations. How and why this happened is long forgotten.
Now the Bedou TechNomads are scattered across the universe in diverse colonies always seeking knowledge and trying to spread their strange alien Faith.
Bedou are known by many deep space races to be trust worthy trading partners if still skilled barterers, Bedou always tend avoid main stream society and as result are not well known to most galactic citizens except where rumor is concerned.
Famous for thier ability to 'tinker' and more so for their strange version of manners and Hospitality the Bedou are a often a wonder tothose who have never encountered them personally.
With odd customs and an attitude which places importance on things that no one else in the universe seems concerned with makes these people often a pleasent enigma--or occasionally a viscious and cunning foe.

So what say you to a party of Bedou? They could encounter your group occasionally and being of a strange "cult" your RPers could have reason to attempt to avoid them. Tag me Grue if it is cool.

Okay, my lad's on deck. DivCorp, I'm assuming the injury to his leg is minor -- possibly it's just stuck under something or someone -- but I'll play it however you want. If you don't wanna play, just stare at him uncomprehendingly and stumble off.

Note to self: next time, turn signature off.

Oh yeah, if we do end up interacting can you give some more details of appearance?

FYI, Perry has that pasty-white skin you get sometimes with redheads, the sort you can see the veins through in the forearms and the back of the legs. He's got big feet for his size and can pick up things with his toes. His elbow-bones and knees are knobbly and his shoulder-blades make "wings" on his back. He forgets to get his hair cut and often forgets to comb it. It doesn't stick up but it's so thick it looks as if he's wearing some sort of padding on his head. Surprisingly in a redhead, he's got dark eyebrows and lashes.

Oops, I ntroduced a new character without even realizing it. So here he is:

Name:Isharo
Gender:Male
Race:Krae-Sern(I already went over that in the bio of Lunac Goca.)
Age:???
Appearence:Short, skinny, wrinkly, and black. Moves slowly.
Technology:Mid-Industrial Revolution
Powers:Nothing supernatural in himself, but he is the Gargoyle-keeper, the Gargoyle being an ancient artifact on the Crash Planet mountain Arrowood. The Gargoyle was built originally to defend the Crash Planet from deadly meteor strikes, but the world's natives gell upon a 'dark age' and the device's use was lost. Later a Krae-Sern emporer entrusted the Gargoyle to a 'Gargoyle-keeper' that would use it to defend the Crash Planet from then-hostile humans and other races, who sought to plunder the planet's vast natural resources and the powerful devices left over by its ancient inhabitants. Isharo is the ninth person to become Gargoyle-keeper.

Is it not too late to join? If it's not... here is mine character.

Name: James Murphy
Species: Human
Race: White
Gender: Male
Age: 20
Eye color: Black
Hair Color: Brown
Build: Somewhat pale and weak looking. Six feet tall (exactly).
Tech: Post-Modern
Bio: Given the relgious zeal of the Empire of Amerigo, the tech-savvy country could never turn its research to the skies, because of conflicting religious doctorines. This young man, however, disobeyed all communal teachings and escaped the Empire to fly into the infinity of space and see new worlds.

Now the thing is, the bizarre religious practices of Amerigo have severly altered the very fiber of James's being. The religious practices involve what is known as the Great Schism. Where the body tolerates immense ammounts of pain until the mind can realize the microprocesses that occur within the body and intercept the bolts of electricity that produce a sensation known as pain. However, most of the populace doesn't go any further in this process of "enlightenment" and James isn't one of them. So he, like many of his countrymen can bear pain without complaint, but he does not have the further training which would make him so in control of every process in his body that makes him a killing machine--that's reserved for higher church officials and the elite corps of Amerigo's army.

Sorry about the delay, Gruenberg. And especially sorry, Divinity Corporate -- I've left your man standing there with his hand stretched out for far too long, he must be feeling a bit unfriendly ... I don't usually end a post in a way that ties someone else up, but I was expecting to be able to get back to it straight away.

Then the bloke from the RL car dealership called. He'd just got hold of this little honey, would we like to take a test drive?

Well, yeah ...

So now we're waiting for a new, not a used, car, though from the same place, and it's been papers and banks and what have you.

Well. Since that's not likely to happen again, it's ho! for the blood and the bandages, and a chance for you to get on with whatever. Why didn't the spaceship burn up on entry to Crash Planet's atmosphere? I suppose mayby it had come sort of energy sheild. But wait! Why didn't the Gargoyle destroy the energy sheild when it struck? I suppose the blast went through the shield somehow...maybye we could explore this possibility.

I have introduced three more aspects of Krae-Sern life. The raklithors look like rhinosauruses, but they are carniverous. They travel in large packs and use their long, needle-like horns and cruching weight to slaughter thier victims. The Guardians are, more or less, samauri. Recently they have been occupied by hunting down the last of the Ton-Sern. The Ton-Sern are rebels who have renounced the emperor's authority. Think of them as ninjas. Remember: Guardians=samauri, Ton-Sern=Ninjas, and raklithors=large, poisenous monsters that eat people.

Ardchoille
18-09-2005, 09:56
Actually, the odds of most people in this being US-based are pretty high, given the NS stats (which I can't find, so don't ask me lol). But it doesn't matter. The thing is, we're here and they're not, at the moment.

"Here" is: ship crashed, wounded being cared for, some non-ship people among them, noises in forest.

I can't see our characters interacting usefully with any of the people already mentioned because their writers aren't around. But at least the existence of the others means our characters can carry on without having to worry about the wounded.

So, what next? We've got Lunac and Snar-Ak trying to interact with James; meanwhile chaos continues back in the Krae-Sern city (raklithors). Perry is taking a break from bandaging when he hears noises in the forest ...

I'll do a sort of neutral post and you can take off from there or dump it back in my lap (like, go check out the forest; tell Perry to stay and then go check out the forest; do some getting-to-know-you stuff with Perry; or just say something non-committal and wait for a reaction.)

The only constraints I can see are: we shouldn't go for, "If it moves, shoot it" responses, since we joined on the basis that this was a character RP; and if either of us invents a forest-dweller different from whatever Gruenberg intended, we're the ones stuck with RPing it.

Ok, I'm sorry I haven't been active in this. It's irresponsible of me. I was away, and had computer difficulties, and when I came back, I saw no activity. I hadn't realized - till now - you two had been carrying it on. If you don't think it an intrusion, I'll have my two characters get involved again. It's believable, because he was sick and she tending him, so it's entirely possibly they IC haven't done much of yet.

Sorry, I guess I didn't word that right. Ishano and Lunac are Krae-Sern.

It's me that didn't word it right. Perry understands that the Guardians are referring to spacegoers as Sky Giants. He has worked out that Ishano and Lunac are inhabitants of the crash planet. He understands that the people on the cliff above are natives of the planet, too. He's not sure whether they're all the same race because he can't see enough of the folk on the cliff to tell (all he can see is shapes silhouetted against the sky). But he can hear that they're hostile to 'Sky Giants' and Ishano and Lunac apparently aren't, so he's throwing in his lot with them.

I read your explanation of Krae-Sem and Guardians, but I'll have another look to see what I've missed and then edit it to fit.

Gruenberg, it's your thread. Real life happens. Nuff said. Kablakhul's the one who deserves the praise for sticking with it.

Since everyone else is just hanging around aiding the survivors, it shouldn't be difficult to get your characters into it again. (It would be nice if one of them would move Jim gently away, though).

The only thing that's actually happened that affects everyone is that a horde of creatures have crashed off the cliff, then disappeared, and the Guardians are now sitting up on top of the cliff, somewhat displeased.

Ain't nuffin' new under the sun ...

I'm a bit stuck. I want to get our trio away from the crash site so we're not constantly having to walk around all the missing RP-ers. But there has to be a good reason for Perry to leave his only known allies.

It would have been fair enough to have the three chased by the local beasts, but the beasts have already been disposed of. The Guardians have ridden off. And Ishano's not going to hospitably suggest that Perry come and have a cuppa with him.

I can think of a few possibilities: Lunac needs to be carried to some place where Ishano can care for him properly; Ishano needs to get somewhere fast and thinks Perry should help them get there (on a vehicle from the crashed ship, which only he has legs long enough to drive?); Ishano wants to use Perry as a counter in some bargain; Perry has some knowledge Ishano can use (unlikely but possible) ...

Anyway, since all these depend on Ishano, do you want to take on that bit?

Failing that, Perry could be there on purpose, having intended to jump ship at a nearby planet and sneak onto the Crash Planet unobserved; he might not know that the Crash Planet is the place he had always intended to get to; he might possibly have heard something about the Gargoyle (a quick scene with someone whispering it to him on the point of death?); there may be an as-yet-unmentioned LERV interest among the crashed passengers ...

If you like any of those, send me a TG and I'll try to get a plot together, or post here and we'll work it out. It's looking more like straight SF adventure than character development, but who knows? The thing is, I don't want to abandon Perry because I want him for other RPs.
Ardchoille
06-11-2005, 08:23
Okay: Ishano knows who those people up there are. I'm hoping that they're the rebels (Ton-Sern?). Since Ishano hates the Guardians, I'm assuming that he gets on with the rebels. But maybe they're not, and maybe he doesn't, and maybe he wants out of there as much as Perry does.

Whatever, if they're caught then hopefully this is a way to get the three of them well and truly away from the crash site.

Why are Ishano and Lunac travelling, anyway? Why has the Gargoyle-keeper left the Gargoyle?

You said Lunac was the one who shot down the ship (apprentice being too adventurous with the Gargoyle?). Does that mean that they're not travelling, that they just ran down to help, to make up for his goof -- ie, that the Gargoyle-station is close?

Would the Ton-Sern be trying to capture the Gargoyle station?

Just thinking aloud here. No need to tell me too much, but I'd appreciate a few more hints.

Well, I wrote in there that Lunac and Ishano were summoned to the Krae-Serns' Empireal court. As for Ishano leaving the Gargoyle unnatended, well, he is just stupid, I guess.

Lunac was supposed to shoot down the ship. That's what the Gargoyle is for. I said their society is like feudal Japan. They always deterred foreign ships that came too close.
