Fantastic! It was really close at the Grun Ring today, with last years championship winner just leading the pack. It looks like Vilitan F1 are going to be prime contenders this year, though there were some new faces in high places throughout the session, with Mike McElway being Shultis's closest challenger. The mid pack was very close, with especially tight times near the middle of the group.

Montoya Attacks the Track
The weather was scorching and so was the pace, and all the runs ran very smoothely. There was small concern when Eric Montoya's exhaust started to spout flames in the tracks slow section, but this wore off in the final sector. This may have been a variety of things, maybe even over-power int he slow corners. Whatever, it cant be good for the engines. However, all went well and now we look forward to the race tommorow!

Daniels, Wilkins largely disappointing
R05-02 not up to standard?
The R05-02 has come under heavy fire from fans of the LivEng Racing Formula One team after their two drivers, who finished strongly in last season's championship (both drivers making the top ten), finished 22nd and 23rd respectively in qualifying for the Grun Ring Grand Prix in Kazakhstania.
An obviously disappointed team principal Gareth Dussis made his feelings obvious after rattling off to the press about his drivers' behaviours before and during qualifying, even mentioning how Troy Wilkins had the time to "find his drink of Coca-Cola empty, and so went to the canteen (600 metres away) to get a new one just two laps before he went out (on track)."
Daniels himself wasn't too pleased. For someone who finished in tenth and qualified in fourteenth last season atthe Grun Ring, his result today was largely a disappointing one, although he conceded there were some things to take back. "We aren't happy with the results, but we'll know what was wrong with the cars. Development on the R05-03 is ongoing, and I'm pleased about its future, and possible debut in Orean, or if we aren't ready by then, hopefully by Schimpol."

A despondent Wilkins rides back to the team camp from the pits on a bike
The powerfull V10 pulled the light F1 car around the turn, Montoya pulling the wheel in to counter the understeer, burping the throttle, and letting the tail end tuck in tight as he pulled it through the turn. The wheels came back around smoothly, yet the computer was still reading problems. He kept running rich, comming in through the next turn, fire scoarching out the tail pipe with every up and down shift. He let off, and took it easy on the engine, running a less than spectacular time.
In the pit the press begged for drivers to answer questions, but most didn't Except for Montoya. He had always been a camera lover, and of course had no problem getting his ruggedly handsome face appear publicly.
"Eric, Eric!" one reporter called out, and Montoya pointed to him. "Why such a relaxed time? Couldn't you have pushed it a bit harder?"
"Yea, but the motor wasn't running perfectly. I didn't wanna risk blowing it, so I eased off. That, and we had a bad tire pick. I was over powering it through the turns, and the tires weren't gripping right. Standard new track bad luck. After all, this isn't NISW, or any other track I've raced time after time. I'm planning on doing a bit better tomorow."
"What about Dawn," another reporter called out. "What do you have to say about her performance?"
"I think she did just fine. Shes young, shes got time to learn how to do this. Its the first qualifier of the season, nothing major. I wouldn't chop us down yet," he chuckled. He waved, and started walking over to the trailor that held the drivers. He didn't let teh disapointement in his time show.

"Bad Day At The Office" For ATR
A disappointing qualifying session for the newly-rebranded Aston-Tickford Racing team. Lacking some of the pace, and a lot of the downforce, that saw them push Shultis and the Threewide boys all the way last season, alas Ari Morgan could qualify only eleventh.
http://www.f1-pics.com/monaco05/saturday/saturday_mo05_alonso02.jpg
Morgan waits for his turn out on track
Liam Ridgewell, on the other hand, was pushing everything out of the brick of a car. The Mercian managed a credible eighth, though the 0.7 gap between the lead VF1 and lead ATR car will worry team principal Mark Aston.
http://www.f1-pics.com/usa05/saturday/saturday_us05_alonso01.jpg
Liam Ridgewell was on the limit
The cars have looked reliable in testing, and the drivers' best chance of points may well be to keep pegging on and wait for others to drop off.

LEEDS, SLOAN STRONG IN QUALIFIING
Shultis Jr. Claims Pole
~Kazakhstania
John Leeds and Steve Sloan, drivers in GEM Motorsports foray into Formula One racing, have captured fifth and sixth, respectavely, in the qualifying session that ended today. Leeds, a veteran of racing, was merely 3 tenths of a second off of pole position, taken by Gary Shultis Jr.
"We have strong hopes for this year. There are a lot of new teams, and space to take a domineering position this year," said John Leeds. I'm excited - if the guys in the pits and Sloan and I can keep pace, we could have a good year. I can see us winning a championship the next few years." Leeds, former driver for the CPRS, was switched to driving for GMD's Formula One team earlier this year.
"We've gotten in about two days of testing this course, on simulators, and the practice runs yesterday."
Unfortunatly, things don't seem to be going great for the car. On their cooldown laps, both Sloan and Leeds had to push their cars to the pits, after apparent mechanical failures near "the Stadium's" hairpin turn left the cars without power.
When asked, Steven Sloan had this to say. "Well... apparently, the EM clutch splintered. I don't know how, the thing had miles and miles of testing without fracture."
Technical Director Elian Woods went more specific with it. "When the drivers started to speed up and go up gear out of the hairpin, the clutch slammed the plates together. The engine plate was moving far faster than the wheel plate, and when the FSBs made contact, they got ripped off the plates. We didn't expect this to happen so soon - in testing, it happened an average of 500 miles apart. The strain was particularly hard on the cooldown lap, since the springs were already worn out from the qualifying one. We're gonna need tougher springs."
The car performed well on it's qualifying lap - no major mistakes, not counting Leeds and Sloan pushing the car slightly off track on the Stadium chicane, or the breakdown, the car seemed quite well off.
Talmeria

Interview from Talmerian TV show Sports Central.
Talmeria's Formula 1 Team entered their first ever qualifying race yesterday, however the results wasn't a great one. John Worthington came 20th, and Robin Easterbrook came a dismal 24th. Team owner Tom Smith remias optimistic though,
'It is important to remember that this is the first time we have ever competed at this level. Compared to the Tamlerian Formula 1 which we used to host this is hundred times harder. We finished just over a second behind first place which is encouraging. Robin was dissapointed with his performance, however we feel John's time reflected that we are not just going to be the new boys everybody regards as pushovers. The cars themselves are brand new this season, and I would like to think that a bit further into the season we will be able to get more out of them.'
So you are happy with this result?
Like I say it could be worse, really I'm putting it down to the inexperience of the team. Back home these guys were racing much slower and under different conditions, and this was their first time round the track in their first ever season. We could hope to be challenging for the top prize in our first season. However if we consistantly get good results(fast times and avoiding a 23rd 24th finish) I feel we might have something to show from the season.

Media Day as Vilita Continue Success
http://www.dirt-racing.com/3wide/sites/vilita/sports/racing/vcar.gif
-------------------------3wide.com Vilitan F1 continued right where they left off, getting the best possible start to their Championship Defense. Lead driver Gary Shultis Jr. did not miss a beat in the offseason, returning with a bang to grab the pole position. Vilitan F1 almost swept the front row, as Jurgen Ramzi followed right behind his teammate until PaRacing's Mike McElway snuck in between the two, relegating ramzi to the third starting position. The Vilitan duo were left unperturbed, however, and soon after the session was overwith proceeded to a highly eventful media day with the drivers answering questions about their remarkable debut season, and their goals for the season ahead. In an elegant ceremony, the updated Vilitan race vehicles were rolled out in a stream of fog before the two pilots followed in full garb. After the question and answer session, the Vilitans hosted an autograph session before retiring for the day in preperations for the race.

Ciramix F1 Team Statement
http://www.f1-pics.com/turkey05/friday/friday_tr05_coulthard03.jpg
Ciramix F1 is so far satisfied with its high end placing at the end of qualifyinf, and believes if it improves like it did last year, it could have the chance of a high finish to the season.
Paul Gilchrist commented that the new car, an evolution of the old one, is a definite step in the right direction, adn Kris Homan said he is settling into the new team well.
It all looks good for the team this season, with a strong driver line up and a good car under them.
