[[EDIT: This thread was origionally posted in the Gameplay area, an area specifically devoted (by sticky) to semi-OOC threads in NS just like this one. But for some reason, a mod decided to move it here, to a pretty much pure IC area. So, for everyone's reference, this entire thread is OOC.]]
I like to think I've worked up somewhat of a reputation here on NS for being realistic. Recently, that realism has come back to smack me in the face, and I have questioned it's value.
Earlier today, I found myself embroiled in a debate on IRC over the finepoints of "gravitech" and it's realsim (I know, geeky, isn't it?). The debate was soon ended rather expertly by a watchful op, all the better for the other poor blokes in the channel a couple of us were annoying. But one of my opponents soon messaged me to continue the debate in private.
I will not betray Ctan's trust in what was said in that private conversation except to admit that while I still disagree with many of his points, he did still enlighten me to another. Whether fortionate or unfortionate, there are a number of respected players in NS who willingly (and in good humor) "wank" to a certain point, and not accept anything beyond.
This is not a bad thing. Many are good RPers and good writers, and I would hate to accept such a policy that would not let me interact with them.
I have tried on past occassion to restrain myself, to not pile real world science on people and just accept them for what they present, and I have had some success for periods of time. Now, I will try to make that change permanent.
In the past few months, I have been moving my nation towards a change to include people picked up from other nations as they have fallen into decay. Some of these players had technologies and characters that were simply pure fantasy. I hope to use this to force myself to be more accepting.
Though I will continue to try and base much of my stuff off physics, I have found myself trusting in a RP philosophy that I have often thought of. Relative gaming.
I guess you could call it "wank" for "wank".
I stand by my principles that all the fantastic technology, magic, and similar are to make an environment to tell a story, but hopefully with a more enlightened outlook I won't step on the toes of quite so many players (prominant and nearly invisible alike!).
It pains me to say the Cardboard Avenger is dead, but it looks like I can no longer carry that torch.
Good gaming all.
