Nova Prussian Orbital Stargate Facility

“Red, blue, yellow, purple. Think that’s the last one,” mumbled Sherry as she placed the final control crystals into the console and closed it up. “We’re ready to go, Mick.”

Mick nodded his head. Both technicians had been there these past few weeks putting the final components into brand new orbital stargate facility for the Greater Prussian Empire, and now it was just moments away from establishing its first wormhole from Earth. The first time was always the most stressful and dangerous. Power had to be regulated for a stable wormhole. Distances had to be constantly recalculated. Instruments had to be rechecked. Fortunately, after this, it was much easier to connect into an orbital gate since the systems had time to adjust for the new facility.

“Alright, initializing reactor startup,” he said as he flipped several switches on the panel before him. The lights on the facility shone brightly and the computer monitors in the control room powered up.

Sherry pulled a one-time-use keycard out of her pocket, as did Mick. Simultaneously, they inserted them into separate slots on opposite ends of the control room and put their hands on the switch beside it.

“3…2…1…turn!” shouted Mick. The nine chevrons on the stargate itself flashed three times, and the computers started to display all the necessary information to integrate the facility into four of the sixty-six orbital stargates in the entire network. Sherry promptly began typing away at one of the computer stations trying to finish the startup procedure. Within in minutes, she announced that it was complete.

Earth Orbital Stargate Facility

Glen Ligon watched an electronic galactic map of the entire network of orbital stargates and kept a close eye on the red light that represented the one at Nova Prussia. Suddenly it turned green.

“Well, they’re finally finished. Let’s dial it up, Don,” he said to his assistant who immediately rushed over to where the main controls were and began flicking on several switches. Glen took a few steps over to the instrument panel.

“Dialing sequence started. Power output at ten percent.” The first chevron on the gate flashed on.

“Looking good so far,” commented Glen.

“Twenty-two percent.” The second chevron lit up.

Glen eyed the instrument panel carefully, watching for any problems.

“Thirty-five percent.” The third chevron flickered, then lit. A few moments later, the fourth chevron flickered for a short time then shone brightly. “Forty-nine percent.”

The flickering chevrons concerned Glen. There was a possibility the gate was not getting enough power, but he decided to wait and see.

“Fifty-six percent.” The fifth chevron flickered even longer then illuminated. Seconds later, Don announced, “Sixty-eight percent. No, sixty-seven. Power output is falling!”

“Alright, bring the second reactor into the grid and boost the voltage. It must be some anomaly out there.”

“It’s working. We’re at sixty-nine percent and climbing.” The sixth chevron lit immediately, followed sometime later by the seventh and eighth.

Then when he knew the process was complete, Don shouted, “One hundred percent!”

The ninth chevron lit and a split second later, the event horizon swooshed out from the center of the stargate. It then receded backwards until it had created a spinning, funnel-like effect coming out of the back of the gate. Finally, the spinning movement stopped. Glen studied the panel before him before he made an announcement to the Greater Prussian vessels that lie waiting.

“To all GPE ships, you have a go.”

Earth, Aboard the HMS Napoleon Bonaparte

"It’s working?!" - blinked the Dersconi captain in command of the famous Imperial flagship, staring at his screen in disbelief. His Allanean aide shrugged. "Why shouldn’t it work? It’s Northrop-Grumman. It always works. Their stuff is the thing, I tell you. Works every single time, like a bloody Swiss watch. And is less complicated to use, too, Captain."

"Very well, then" - replied the Captain. He was rather new to this, and so was not well aware of all the various nations of Sol Space and their different aptitudes. Certainly he was not aware of the quality of Northrop-Grumman space products. "In that case, alert all Greater Prussian nations that the Stargate is ready. Let them begin preparing for transit to Nova-Prussia." The Allanean nodded. "Aye, Sir. Working on it." Messages were beamed immediately to Reichskamphen,, Derscon, Allanea, Central Facehuggeria, as well as other nations of the Greater Prussian Empire.

Confederate States Space Command

"Okay, people, it’s open, let’s rock and roll, boys! Let’s do it!" - voices erupted from all over the Mission Control Room - "Let’s get them going!". Space tug vessels moved back and forth, grabbing hold of Conestoga-class unpowered colony ships, carrying them through the gate - each full of thousands of cryogenically suspended Allaneans, who signed up for the trip long before the Northrop-Grumman stargate was even complete. Now, the government was keeping the promise it’s made to them.

NGSS Zereul -- Earth Orbit

Even though it was officially classified as a battlecarrier, the NGSS Zereul was more of a multi-purpose vessel. Today, it was being used for the colonization of a small portion of Nova Prussia. Its fighter complement of nine hundred thirty was reduced to just one hundred and a large percentage of the crew had been temporarily removed to make way for the colonists and the materials to construct the new colony. The Corporation, at one time, had seven vessels suited especially for this purpose, but they had not been used in almost thirty years. This led to their eventual scrapping.

On the bridge of the Zereul, General William Harris watched the orbital stargate from a distance bustling with activity. While he was not particularly fond of these kind of quiet trips, the commander-in-chief of the Northrop-Grumman Air Force Space Command wanted to break up the monotony of the perpetual paperwork that needed to be filled out and the ever boring staff meetings that needed to be attended.

“Helm, set course,” he stopped and thought about it for a moment. “No, revert control to my command chair. I’ll take us in myself.”

“Yes, sir,” replied the helmsman. A throttle and control yoke rose out of the arms of Harris’ command chair along with several rows of buttons and switches.

“Bringing Engines Two and Four online.” The Zereul was constructed so that only two engines need to be operated under standard conditions. The other two were used when the vessel needed speed fast.

Harris then held onto the throttle and began to push it forward while steering with the small control yoke. The bulky 9.2-kilometer long vessel began to slowly move towards the gate. As it started to pick up speed, he carefully moved the control yoke so that the Zereul would enter the gate just above any other Greater Prussian vessels that were also entering. When Harris saw that it was precisely where he wanted it to be, he pushed the throttle as far as it could go. With all four engines at full power, the vessel plowed through the gate towards the new colony.

A large Frigate powered up and flew into the gate. Onboard were 5,000 citizens of the Empire 100 of them nobility. Civilization would be established on the planet, and in order for it to be established, there needed to be order.

A brigade of the Imperial Guard accompanied the colonists for protection...and also to ensure that nothing would get out of hand. There were flags, crests, eagles, symbols of all kinds. They would not be allowed to forget where they came from and who it was they owed their loyalty to.

Bridge of the HMS Napoleon Bonaparte

Prince John was staring out of the glass window, scanning the massive Stargate. I knew Northrop would come through, he thought. Prince John was dressed in what was now his "official" space attire -- the black cloak of a Sith Lord. Sure, he wasn't technically a sith lord, but the cloak worked to intimidate.

"Excellent," the Prince said. "Lieutenant Branov, have you finished installing the stargate map?"

"Yes, milord," the young lieutenant -- a computer nerd -- responded, snapping a salute. "It is up and running." The Prince nodded to him.

"Good work. Continue with your duties." Lieutenant Branov snapped to attention and saluted crisply.

"Right away, sir." When the young lieutenant ran off, the Prince nodded to Captain Boris Tarkanov, commander of the HMS Napoleon Bonaparte, who then got on the communications console.

"All hands, prepare for Stargate jump." The captain then turned to the navigators.

"Go for it."

"Aye."

And with that, the small fleet, headed by the Nappy, zoomed into the Stargate towards Nova Prussia.

First off, I would like to congradulate you on your excellent efforts on the constuction of the orbital stargates. These are masterpieces, and I have never doubted Northrop's abilities.

However, I have a request: We must establish multiple stargates. One single gateway to Nova Prussia will not be suitable. Specifically, I'm talking about land based Stargates. The creation of these land-based Stargates will allow for cheaper and faster travel between Nova Prussia and the Earth GPE, as it completely eliminates space travel.

Please reply promptly.

Nova Prussia

The Imperial-owned Frigate (OOC: that Reichskammphen wrote about) was inside the convoy headed by the Imperial Flagship, as were a few other frigates filled with Dersconis and other nationalities, as well as a few other assorted warships.

The Imperial frigate wandered off on its own (not including an escort), while the Dersconi frigate headed for the obvious place for a predominantly Russian people -- North. Not quite the pole, but pretty damn close. About the same number of people as the Imperial Frigate was carrying, only no nobles, as Derscon did not really have that setup anymore -- titles were simply honor titles and meant nothing.

However, there was a small group of military presence on board, but it was strongly agreed upon that they wouldn't be needed.

Standard Stargate Mark III

A massive, circular ring with 36 strips of lights on an inner track that light up symbols which represent star constellations. The stargate is capable of sending people and objects hundreds of thousands of light-years via an interstellar conduit called a "wormhole." One side of the gate holds nine equally spaced, V-shaped, blue locking mechanisms, or "chevrons," capable of locking at least six constellations in place via the fixed inner track. The first six glyphs lock down a point in space, while the seventh represents the point of origin. When the seventh chevron locks, an unstable energy vortex emerges from the gate, incinerating everything in its wake. Once the vortex is gone and the event horizon is established, outbound travel may commence. Once objects have exited the other side, the stargate has the capability of shutting itself off after a few minutes.

Weight: 50 tons (100,000 pounds or 45,359 kilograms)
Diameter: 22 feet (6.7 meters)
Longest A Wormhole Can Be Established: 38 minutes
Dialing Time: 16 seconds

Glyph Systems

Iris:
The purpose of the iris is to keep unwanted intruders, be it a person or object, from coming through the stargate. Once deployed, the iris rests a few micrometers in front of the event horizon, preventing matter from reintegrating as it arrives through the wormhole. Objects are destroyed, and living beings are killed instantly upon "impacting" on the iris. One of the known substances capable of passing through the gate despite the iris is a radio wave. At the touch of a button, an iris-like energy shield will protect the Standard Stargate Mark III.

GDO Transmitter:
"Garage Door Opener." The device transmits a signal to the computer the stargate is dialing into, identifying the place and planet where the transmitting stargate is. It is much like a caller-ID system.

Dialing Devices

DHD:
Dial Home Device. The standard device connected to a stargate, covered in several concentric circles (number of glyphs depends on the galaxy in which it is located in) of symbols, with a central crystal. Pushing the right glyphs in the right sequence, then the central crystal, activates the stargate.

Dialing Supercomputer:
One supercomputer with a dialing program; The console attached to the dialing computer has DHD symbols on it instead of letters. As well as dialing out, the computer controls incoming wormholes by controlling the iris over the stargate. Also, pressing a button on the top right portion of the console switches the glyph systems so you can dial a different galaxy without using eight chevrons.
Milky Way Galaxy Console (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v73/TheQ2005/Stargate%20Program/milkywaydhd.png)
Andromeda Galaxy Console (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v73/TheQ2005/Stargate%20Program/andromedadhd.png)
Saddon-Treshkmed Galaxy Console (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v73/TheQ2005/Stargate%20Program/saddontreshkmeddhd.png)
Triangulum Galaxy Console (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v73/TheQ2005/Stargate%20Program/triangulumdhd.png)
Blackeye Galaxy Console (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v73/TheQ2005/Stargate%20Program/blackeyedhd.png)

Built-in Pop-out Console:
Push a button on the side of the stargate and a small console pops out containing multiple lighted glyph buttons, two galaxy glyph toggle buttons, and an iris activation button.

Power Source:
Since the stargate is essentially an enormous superconductor, it is capable of harnessing power from a wide variety of energy sources, especially electricity. In case of an emergency, the stargate has a back-up battery, which can be used once before it runs out of energy.

Unit Cost: $2 Billion (Comes with your option of a DHD, dialing supercomputer or BOTH!)

I appriciate your aid to the establishment of the Stargate system. It will not be forgotten.

If possible, I would like one to be shipped to YG-7845647-A-III, codenamed "Water," and others to be shipped to various places around Derscon -- an exact list will be established later. Also, I would like to send technicians to be trained in the operation of Stargates, if it's not too much to ask.

Nova Prussia: Planet YG-7845647-A-III; "Water"

Commander Sergey Gorshkov, a promising young officer, was looking over the charts when the holocomm lit up, showing the cloaked figure of Prince John.

"Milord, what is it you ask?"

"Commander Gorshkov, please begin unloading your passengers and set up an outpost."

"Milord, we are not in the position to readily resupply them for an extended period of time. We are only on--"

"Commander! Be silent! A land-based stargate will be shipped there soon, which we hope in a week or so will be able to be directly connected to a few military instillations, where supplies will be able to be shipped directly to the colonists."

"As you wish. I will begin landing them immediately.

The manufacturing facility that constructed the land-based stargates was not a particularly large one compared to others. It covered an estimated three football fields worth of floor space and employed only about one hundred fifty personnel altogether. Today, they had received word of a sizeable order, and at the moment, the plant manager was announcing it to some of the employees.

“We just received an order about a half-hour ago relayed through the SGC from the Dersconi government,” the manager said high ontop a large thirty by thirty by eight foot wooden crate. “We have a final order for one Mark III gate for their new colony. This one will be shipped out ASAP.” He stomped his foot on the crate. “Now, we have an unfinalized order for several more. How many? I’m haven’t the slightest clue, so we’re going to built at least ten. Are y’all ready to go?”

At once, the employees all shouted, “Yes!”

“Alright, then let’s get crackin’”

They then dispersed to their specific stations to begin work on the new order. Meanwhile, the crate that the manager had been standing on was loaded onto a cargo ship and sent towards the orbital stargate.

A collection of twenty technicians has been assembled and will be sent off immediately.

Concerning the Stargates:

One Stargate is to be shipped as soon as possible to Kremlin Palace in Rekjyavich Andropov Military City. From there, the stargate will exchange hands and Dersconi personnel will take it to where it needs to go. I only want one NG technician along to supervise installation and startup. The final destination of the Stargate doesn't exist, if you catch my meaning.

Once that stargate has been installed, one is to go to the First Corps Command Center located in Andropovsgrad. After that has been installed, one is to go to another location which shall not be revealled. The same procedure that will be taken for the Stargate to be delivered at the Palace shall be done.

Afterwords, please ship an extra five stargates. To the Kreigsburg Naval Depot, where they will be stored until further need of them is required.

Thank you for your assistance,

As the freighter made it’s way to the polar regions of YG-7845647-A-III. The pilot commented to the other two men, who were to be lowered down with both the stargate’s and the dialing equipment’s crates.

“You better get some coats. It’ll be freezing out there.”

“Really?” asked one of the men. “Where’s this colony at?”

“Polar areas. You know, snow, glaciers, nasty places.”

“Of all the places on this planet, why on Earth would someone want to choose somewhere you can freeze your ass off?”

“They’re Russian. I think. I don’t know for sure.” As both men were getting winter gear on in the back, they started to smirk. “Look. If I had all the answers, I’d be teaching in a nice cushy room at the University. Does this look like the University?”

As they continued to chatter, the freighter descended into the planet’s atmosphere toward the directions given to them.

HMS This Fine Frigate

Sergey Gorshkov was still on his ship in space when the NG freighter arrived. Once he made contact, he set up the holocom.

"Mornin' folks, this is Commander Sergey Gorshkov of This Fine Frigate. Yes, that's actually the name of my ship. Anyways, you can hook up with me awhile. I have a continuous shuttle transport to the ground; the stargate is just one more piece of cargo, for all I care."

Sergey then sent the Stargate Recieved message down to the ground.

===================================
Polar Regions: YG-7845647-A-III

Only two hundred Dersconi were on the ground at the moment -- evenly divided between settlers and the newly formed Dersconi Stellar Army, made up of mostly ex-Imperial Army soldiers who were cut in the massive RIF's. They found it a blessing, as they got the new IS-W/A stuff, and the earthlings didn't. Sod on them.

Gerhard Schneeberger was the leader of the group of two hundred Dersconi's. An ex-Army Ranger and the retired Chief Scout Executive of the Boy Scouts of Derscon, he was fifty and in excellent physical shape, save his balding head. He was also a genius at wilderness.

"Hey, group three....Damnit, Hans! Get over here!" Group three, one of the groups responsible for the City Hall construction, all meandered over to where Gerhard was standing. The leader of that group went by 'Hans.'

"Yeah?"

"Hans, the Stargate connecting us with Earth is coming soon. Please expidite the process and construct a small holding cell for it until the rest of the place is built."

"Aye, sir." With that, group three wandered off to finish constucting the part of the city hall they were working on already -- the Stargate holder.

"I can't wait until this Stargate gets here," Gerhard thought aloud. "We can get better building materials." Currently, barracks for the soldiers were established, as was a community kitchen. Long barracks for the civilians were also established, and a small fence was set up around the compound to keep out wild animals. Guard towers were manned at all times, armed with simple yet effective Browning M2 fifty calibre machine guns.

After introducing himself, Raymond Shelton, the pilot of the Stevenson continued. “Well, there’s more to the order than just the stargate itself. NGSS Zereul – In Orbit Above YG-7845647-A-III

As he stood beside the young lieutenant operating the sensor station, General Harris looked over the scans of the planet carefully for an ideal place for the new colony. He had narrowed it down to two locations. One was on an immense plain far away from any mountains. The other was between a snowcapped mountain range and the planet’s largest ocean. Most of the requirements were met for the new colony including precipitation, ground composition, water supplies, and plant life, but there was just one thing left to check.

“What are the differences in temperature between them?” asked Harris as he pointed to the two places.

The lieutenant ran several computer simulations that were based upon the planet’s location in the system, it’s tilt, rotation, and revolution and came up with an answer. “The location on the large plain would have fairly hot temperatures during the summer and warm temperatures during the winter while the location between the ocean and the mountain range would have fairly comfortable temperatures year round.”

“Well then, the latter is our new colony.” The general turned around from the station and called out. “Helm, take us in.”

The Zereul pivoted towards the planet and began its entry into the atmosphere.

Brigadier General Stephen Clayton gazed out the windshield of his Humvee. A heavy layer of frost that coated nearly everything glistened in the morning sunlight. This, along with the frigid southern wind that blew off of the peaks of the mountain range behind him, signaled that fall and the freezing winter months were just on the horizon. He turned his head slightly and looked out at the tops of the mountains out of his side mirror. He was glad that he did not have to brave the weather conditions that those who were stationed at a small airfield on top did. They faced near zero temperatures year round, so aircraft were not able to land there to replenish their supplies in the winter because their engines would freeze. Their job was important though. They had to constantly inspect the outer doors for the missile silos to make sure that there weren’t any obstructions, and they maintained the communications equipment, such as satellite dishes and other transmitter/receivers. The General’s thinking was interrupted by the long passenger van that had just pulled up next to him. Normally, he would have used a simple troop carrier like a M35A2, but he decided against the rough, old dirty truck. He could not let something happen to the fragile technicians now, could he?

Freighter James Casey
Current Position – 20 Miles Outside Northrop-Grumman Airspace
Heading – RAMC Airport, Derscon

The medium-sized, five hundred meter long freighter cruised though the upper atmosphere, above the passenger jets' airspace, toward its intended destination. Inside the cargo hold were three large crates that contained one stargate each and almost fifty other smaller crates that contained the necessary equipment for each of the gates. Also, a technician by the name of Sophia D’Amato was travelling in with the rest of the cargo. She had been specifically chosen for this particular assignment because of her knowledge of how the stargate network worked and because she was not unfamiliar with these classified installation projects. Nevertheless, she was not comfortable being in the cargo hold, but the freighter was not exactly a luxury spaceliner and had only one seat which was for the pilot. She was glad though when the announcement came from him that they would be arriving at the airport in less than twenty minutes. As they neared the Dersconi mainland, the pilot sent out a message to the air traffic controller at RAMC Airport.

James Casey, you are cleared to land at RAMC Port Alpha Seventeen.

Outside RAMC, in the spaceport section, twenty Praesillei Dei rushed over to the place where the shuttle was to land and awaited it's landing.

OOC: Crappy post, since I had about a minute and a half to write it, but we need to complete this thread.

Freighter James Casey
RAMC Airport, Derscon

Upon receiving directions from the air traffic controller, the James Casey altered its heading slightly. After a few minutes, it reached its destination and hovered over the landing area. Sixteen landing legs extended from the bottom of the hull, and the freighter gradually descended onto the landing pad. The pilot then powered down the engines and announced towards the rear of the vessel.

“Miss D’Amato, we’re here.” As he stood up to stretched, he looked out his cockpit window and noticed the Praesillei Dei standing nearby. “And it looks like we have company.”

“Oh?” she replied, somewhat concerned. She could not see what the pilot was talking about because the cargo hold of the freighter did not have any windows.

“Yeah, they look a bit trigger happy, but it’s nothing to worry about.” He pulled a lever beside him. The rear door opened on the cargo hold and a ramp extended down to the ground. “Off you go.”

Sophia smiled and shook her head. She knew the pilot was just joking around. “You are a piece of work,” she replied as she made her way towards the ramp.

To be honest, though, the pilot didn't realize that he was in fact not kidding. Most if not all of the Praesillei Dei are trigger happy in some respect or another; hell, they're supposed to be trigger-happy. One of them approached the unloading passengers.

"You may take your cargo over to the trucks. The technition on board may follow us in the vehicle. PLease be expedient, we have little time."

They’re to the point, aren’t they, Sophia thought. “Alright, I'll just get the pilot to load everything onto the trucks using the crane.” She then turned back around and yelled into the freighter, “You heard all that?”

“Yeah,” the pilot replied, already at the crane's controls. He pulled a lever to open up the top of the freighter. The massive doors slid open and the entire crane lifted up from the floor. When it came to a rest near the top, its boom extended outward over the cargo hold. The pilot then used it to lift the large crates out individually out onto the beds of the trucks. Luckily, the smaller crates were tied onto pallets, which meant that they could be moved relatively easy.

After a few minutes, the unloading was complete. Sophia nodded to the Praesillei Dei. “That’s all done. Shall we go?” she asked as she walked to the vehicle one of them had referred to earlier.

"Yes, we shall." The ten guards led Sophia to the Hummer waiting for them and the convoy travelled out of that docking bay to a large bunker, where the massive blast doors opened and they travelled downward.

After about four hours of travel through the tunnel system, they finally managed to get to it's location -- another set of blast doors in the bunker complex fifteen feet under the ground. The blast doors opened and they entered a semi-large room where the Stargate was to go. Minister of State Security, Yuri Golovko, was waiting for them.

"Sophia, welcome to Derscon," Yuri said as they got out of the hummer. "It's unfortunate you have to see this instead of the beautiful parts of Derscon, but that's the military for you. Over there is the location where I want the Stargate," Yuri said, pointing to a place far off in the room against the wall. "How it is installed I will leave to you, but if you are unsure of something, ask me." Yuri failed to mention what exactly this place was, however. He also didn't mention the fact that they were over two hundred and sixty miles from Rekjyavich-Andropov Military City, as well as thirty meters below the ground.

But Derscon was always concerned about security.

Sophia nodded graciously to the Minister of State Security and walked over to the place he had pointed out. She stood with her back against the wall and walked out from it about fifteen paces. This was to make sure that the swirling event horizon when the stargate dialed didn’t disintegrate the wall behind it. Next, she took out a piece of chalk and made a line on the floor where the stargate would go. Then, she had the large gray wooden crate containing the stargate hauled over to where she specified. She quickly climbed up the ladders that were built into the sides and pulled open the locks on the front of the crate. Both sides came crashing down as if they were trees that had been recently cut down. Next, she had all of the metal supports bolted into the wall and welded together. The large piece of wooden crate that had previously supported the stargate was removed in favor of the new supports. Next, the high-capacity capacitors were clamped onto four parts of the outside rim of the stargate, and industrial sized cables were strung from them to the opposite side of the room. Sophia looked over what had been completed so far and was fairly pleased, but now she had to solve one last problem and thought that it would be best to ask the Minister about it.

“Minister Golovko, two of those cables need to be tied into a high-voltage circuit breaker just in case a problem arises where you need to turn the stargate off manually. Now, that circuit breaker needs to be tied into a main power source, preferably something that generates enormous amounts of power like a fission or fusion reactor. I brought the circuit breaker with me so all I need to do is install it, but what about the power source?”

"That's easy. This bunker section is powered by a top-grade fusion reactor, as are all cities and major military installations. It allows excess energy to be produced as to....well, you don't need to know. But yes, we have a fusion reactor you can install it into. Anywhere specific?"

“I highly recommend that the circuit breaker be placed in a separate room under lock and key. You don’t want anyone messing around with it without authorization. Also, keep in mind that these cables need to be run from the stargate to the control room, from the control room to the circuit breaker, and from the circuit breaker to the reactor. You don’t really need the circuit breakers to be all the way on the other side of this facility. That way it keeps things simple and direct, and it’s a heck of a lot easier to replace just a short piece of it than a long strand that snakes itself all over the place.”

Golovko nodded. "That was the plan. The control room is over there," he said, pointing to a titanium/diamond door secured by a retinal scanner and three Dersconi Marines, the walls being reinforced foot-thick concrete. "The circut breaker is over in that far corner," Yurii continued, pointing to the small computer setup opposite the control room. It was a single computer and a bunch of switches, in the open. Before Sophia could comment, though, Yurii smirked.

"Yes, doesn't seem very protected, does it?" He nodded to the Praesillei Dei, who said something over his radio, and they waited for about three seconds before the security system turned on. The computer and circut switches themsevles were immediately covered in three-inch thick titanium/diamond armour, and laser walls immediately activated, completely surrounding the breaker system. The laser walls would nearly disintegrate anything that touches it.

"It is the same security system used elsewhere to protect a vital national security secret," the Minister commented.

"Now, is there anything else?"

Sophia was impressed by the level of security in the facility. Never before had she seen such precautions taken. Many times before, those who purchased a stargate for the first time didn’t know a single thing about security. Although they were warned about it, they would run the facility and the stargate haphazardly which almost always resulted in someone getting injured or killed. Then, they would change their ways. It was as if they were children near a hot electric iron. Even though they were warned that it was hot, they wouldn’t learn that it was until they touched it and were burned. Thankfully, the Dersconi were not like that and appeared to be very much capable of handling a stargate.

Sophia looked at the stargate and the rest of the crates in the room before she answered the Minister, “Well, all that needs so be done now is to run the cables and install the supercomputers. Once that’s done, you’re in business.”

However, it's quite large."

Yurii thought about it for a moment, and nodded. "Ah, true. The supercomputers we have would be a bit overbearing and too powerful for this use. And since all the programming is already there, we will stick with the original plan. Now, the project is yours. I will have some of my men oversee the work, as well as some from the Defense Ministry. I will stay here until they arrive."

In two hours, the final holes were drilled, cables were strung and connected, and protective metal tubing was installed for the cables. When that had finished, the crate containing the supercomputer was hauled over to the control room door.

Sophia approached Yurii once again. "Minister Golovko, the cables are finished. May I install the supercomputer now?"

The computer center really looked like something from a science fiction movie. A 3D holomap of the galaxy was in the centre, with the points where all of the known Stargates were were lit up with a yellow dot, with large monitors all over the place.

Sophia nodded to Yurii and began flipping several switches on the control panel. As the systems powered up, the supercomputer emitted a soft hum and the monitors flickered on. They displayed several views of the stargate and numerous readouts from the fusion reactor, stargate, circuitry, and other vital systems. Next, she powered up the stargate. The chevrons flashed several times then turned off.

Then she faced Yurii again. "The initial startup has finished. Now you had said that you had wanted me to teach a few of your officers how to use the system. I think that I'm ready for them now."

to travel through until energy vortex has dissipated. Thank you.
After exactly four minutes, the bright blue energy vortex burst out of the stargate. Then it receded until it had created a spinning, funnel-like effect coming out of the back of the gate. Within a few short moments, the spinning movement ceased and the two ships would be able to enter the stargate.

---------------------------------------------------

Sophia motioned for the group to come over to the control panel where she was. There, she began to teach them how to operate the basic functions of the stargate.

“First, I’ll show you how to dial a gate address.”

As she typed several keys on the keyboard, the glyphs from the address appeared on the monitor in front of her. Also the stargate began dialing. The lights around the inner track swirled around until the correct glyph appeared at the correct chevron. When it did, the chevron lit brightly. After only sixteen seconds, the seventh and last chevron lit and the event horizon expanded out of the front of the event horizon. It then receded back until it had created a spinning funnel out of the rear of the gate. After a few seconds, the spinning motion stopped.

“Now, I’ll show you how to raise the iris. The iris is to keep unwanted travelers from coming through the gate.”

She typed a few more keys and a semi-transparent shield appeared over the event horizon of the stargate.

“Finally, just hit this button and the gate will disengage.”

When she punched the button, the event horizon of the stargate disappeared and the glyphs and the chevrons went dark. She then turned around in her seat.

“Any questions?”

One member of the group spoke up. “How safe is this stargate to operate?”

Sophia thought for a moment before she replied. “There have been a few instances of problems. The first that comes to mind was with an incoming wormhole. There was a sudden power surge on the other gate that caused the wormhole to jump to the nearest gate. In a worse case scenario, you can have a team hit the iris on someone else’s gate and blow out all the capacitors on yours which is a pain to fix.

There was another time when security protocols were bypassed to establish a wormhole. The wormhole went directly through a sun and put an unstable, super-heavy element into the sun’s nuclear reaction. That caused the light-spectrum of the sun to shift toward infrared, which, in turn, almost caused the earth-like planet that was orbiting it to nearly lose all of their plant life. Thankfully, it was fixed in time. The moral of that story is don’t ever try to bypass security protocols to establish a lock.

Now, there are plenty more problems that could happen, but they are all quite rare. If you operate the gate in a safe, professional manner, there will be few problems. Anyone else?” Sophia looked around to see if there were anymore questions, but the group appeared to not have any. She then turned towards Yurii. “Minister Golovko, I believe we are finished here.”
