World Cup Introduction:
For more information on the World Cup, its History, how it works, who runs it, and the competitions related to it, check out the World Cup Wiki Site (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/World_Cup).
The NSWC is a tournament for any NS nation who signs up. This World Cup is about to start its 24th competition, and your nation can take part! Every team is given a rank based on their performances in previous Cups, and the starting rank is 150 (the Current 'best team in the world' is Sarzonia, with a rank of 1) See: KPB Rankings (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/KPB_ranking_system)
Scores are generated using either a Java program or through various or MS Excel sheet 'scorinators' which use random numbers, weighted by ranking and RP bonus to produce the scores.
It is encouraged for Nations to RP - roleplay - their matches, team rosters, players and such. Good RPs will help raise your chance of winning (especially in the Baptism of Fire and Colony Cup). Please note: A lot of RPs does not guarantee goals or wins, but your chances are improved or this happening. i.e. Two debutant, Rank 150, nations play each other. One has RP'd a few times, the other has not. The nation who has participated should have the better probability of victory, but still has a chance of a Win, Loss or Draw.
RPs can be Team Roster announcements, fan comments, press conferences, media stories, anything about the game, as long as you've kept to the score as posted or TGd to you by the host/scorer.
For any other questions you may have, please see the World Cup FAQs (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/World_Cup_FAQs) article on NSwiki. - Originally Produced by Starblaydia
Signup Information:
The longest-running sports-competition in NationStates reaches its 24th installment: the Football (Soccer) World Cup. Please do specify if you have not participated before.
If your nation is new to the World Cup, you will be able to take part in the preliminary Baptism of Fire Cup (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/Baptism_of_Fire) competition.
If this is your first Cup Please indicate whether you wish to be registered for this event or not.
Puppets have to post with their nation and identify their master.
Ideally the hosts of this World Cup would like to have 98 nations taking part in the qualifying, so if there aren't 98 nations signed-up (96 + 2 hosts) and you want to take part, please do!
Those with '1' in white after their names have signed up with their first post, as Vil likes to keep track of these things.

Updated up to Liamist States. 46 nations, 5 puppets and 11 BoF candidates, 8 of whom have specifically asked to be in the BoF through various media.
EDIT: Typical that I write an update post while someone posts a signup.
Liamist States, as for a joint-entry between two nations, I have no idea about whether that is allowed or otherwise. Best to ask someone like Bedi.
Tonissia, you are only allowed one puppet in a World Cup, and LE has been watching too many WW2 PoW movies :D Verboten indeed ;)

Well actually I do know, just have a small error to correct in the list. Added to that fact is that I would expect that nation to be deleted the next time a mod sees it, so it doesnt really matter.

Upon reflection, I don't think I'm going to be able to keep up with doing a World Cup along with all the other threads that I am in. It would have been nice to have another go at this, but if I recall from past experience, these things move pretty quickly, and my knowledge of football being nothing short of the absolute basics - plus the memory of my last failures when I attempted this - I have decided to pull out my team from the events.

My apologies for the misinformation
We would be pleased to join in the 24th annual games. Could somebody please send us the rule book and do we have to put down our drinks? What is the weather like around the stadium??
Our players are wanting to know what spf of sunscreen to use.
Thank you.
Dominion of Quaarn rises to the challenge.
As this is our first attempt at winning the world cup we would also join the trial of fire.
What temperature do you maintain the bed of coals? (our champion Kebob chefs are preparing the opening feast for our athletes)
Other nations athletic teams are welcome to the opening festivities, please use the provided waste receptacles. We like to keep the beaches tidy.
The warriors of stryffe accept any challenge, and as such, would be overjoyed to register for the baptism of fire as well.
The nation of Quaarn has important questions. By what rules do we compete, and more importantly, is the consumption of alcohol permitted by our players? If so, is it permitted during game play? And if so, in what quantity?
The brothers of Stryffe are at their best, when mildly inebriated.
Thank you,

I must query as to why the United Socialist States of Clavis went ahead and copied my initial entry into the World Cup in their announcement to the governing body of World Cup 24. I wonder if it is because socialist-based states are more than willing to copy capitalist nations such as the Armed Republic of Jewish Citizens as they know it is us who are doing things right. If only they could get their economies to be as successful as ours.

It wll be beacuse, Minister Berg, most Sports Ministers - in our lengthy experience - are sheep with all the memory-capacity of a goldfish. Upon seeing a successfully-written application to sign-up for the World Cup and Baptism of Fire tournament near the end of the list, many Sports Ministers will simply choose to copy the style or even the direct wording of that text. I am personally glad, however, they did not follow the Liverpoolian nation's style of 'count us in lahs'.
Sign-ups have also been updated to 72 nations, 26 out of 23 Baptism of Fire participants confirmed.

Yes, this must be true and I thank you for your candor on this issue Minister van Honjiik. I must also agree with the point you made on the alternative style of posting that could have been taken. I imagine it must be far easier to duplicate a release by another nation instead of penning your own. Alas, I feel it my duty as the Minister of National Athletics, to make the best of my duties in this office as it may possibly be a stepping stone to a higher posting under the office of our Prime Minister Shimon Schlesinger. The Brazillico Advance
Too Cool for The BoF
Brazillico prepare to bypass the World Cup's pre-tourny
Today, the Brazillico Football Association has decided not to enter this edition of the Baptism of Fire cup. Though it has been over 30 years since the BFA sent a competitive squad to represent the country, the association has determined it best not to play in the tournament. The Baptism of Fire is designed to give new entrants a chance to boost their world ranking so they won't get pummeled as badly once they reach the World Cup qualifiers.
"Quite simply, we have something that the rankings fail to calculate," said BFA President, Joaquim Lynch, "Skill. What's the point of beating up a couple n00bs who've won a couple regional football tournaments. We've produced all-time greats like Esteban de Jesus, Guy Santos, Octavio Quintana, McMario, the Cannon seven and we're continuing to churn out quality talent. Newsflash: We've won World Cups. I think playing against this inferior competition would just lower the class of our side."
However, not all in the Formerly Jingoistic States agree with Lynch's decision. Many feel that a bit of international experience and an opportunity to play as a team might help the Brazillican side.
"We're looking into playing friendlies against nations closer to our caliber, like Bedistan, Rejistania and Sarzonia," continued Lynch. "Just because we chose not to send a team for thirty years because there was a war going on with our southern neighbours, Tanah Burung, doesn't mean we're not as football-mad as we always were or that we just stopped playing football. Hah! We're still the cream of the crop. Only reason we're gonna lose most of our matches in the World Cup is due to politics since the WCC is still sour after we bolted when hosting World Cup 16."
Lynch's confidence is reciprocated by most Brazillicans. They know they've got a great side. They know when they look out their parlor windows they can see kids playing football on the streets. They know they're as good as they've ever been. However, Lynch has made quite a gamble not sending his side to the Baptism of Fire Cup, and we'll have to see whether his decision pays dividends or cripples the team in the long-run.

Proclamation from the nation of Trebnak:
The national team from Trebnak will be represented by the football club from the capital of Falkurst. We look forward to some excellent competition though we do request that if we are scheduled to compete against Trotsgrad that extra security is on hand at the site we are to play at in light of the history between our two nations.
Also, we would like to officially sign up for the Baptism of Fire competition as well.

BREAKING NEWS FROM GFN - GLORIOUS FALKURST NEWS
July 18, 2005 - BREAKING NEWS
Trebnak barred from World Cup 24!
Commander irate in regards to, 'obvious political maneuvering by Trotsgrad'.
In a televised interview this morning the leader of the nation, Pauline Soros, addressed the nation on our failed bid to attend the upcoming football world cup. With tensions still high after the numerous recent political events she noted that, 'this incident does not hold well for prosperous relations between our two nations' and that 'this action has caused our nation to rethink its cautious approach in relation to Tafa'.
Already this morning troops and military armaments were seen leaving the main barracks in Falkurst headed northeast towards the city of Tafa. In Tafa itself unconfirmed reports have stated the delicate takeover of the city has been altered and that Trebnak troops are marching into the city and to the eastern perimeter in droves.
A curfew has been issued in the city and a proclamation that any, 'Trotsgrad forces caught on Trebnak territory would be executed at once'. We will keep you up to date on this late breaking news as the day progresses.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
OOC: Falkurst is the capital of Trebnak, Tafa is a city that is along the Trotsgrad/Trebnak border where a genocide happened in May 2005 and has been the main contention point between both nations. It was recently handed over by Trotsgrad to Trebnak under an agreement where Trebnak tricked the nation of Trotsgrad. See map links below for further reference:

18-07-2005, 13:33
Greetings Comrades,
We graciously applaude the actions of the executive committee who have barred the fascist dictatorship of Trebnak from participating in this tournament. It is obvious that the nations of the world hold deeds accountable and that to engage in any competition with a genocidal power is to support the actions of that power. We therefore commend the actions of those involved with this decision and again look forward to participating in the World Cup ourselves.
Sincerely, Trots Bjda
Humble follower of the people
PS: Please note that the former Minister of National Athletics, Karleki Samov has recently been removed from his position in light of the poor showing that the Trotsgrad football team had at our own recent invitational. All communications should therefore go through my office until further notice.

"We're looking into playing friendlies against nations closer to our caliber, like Bedistan, Rejistania and Sarzonia,"
With Krytenia hosting a tournament the team is not actually taking part in, our team would be happy to offer up ourselves as an opponent. The match would be played in Brazillico - there's enough football round these parts as it is, and a lot of our fans never got the chance to see Brazillico after the BFA's withdrawal from WC16 led to our games being played in *spit* Karelaland.
The Sonaron Pride will participate again, and might actually be arsed to RP this time, if we can come up with something entertaining.
Oh, and anyone wanna start thinking about a CoH bid for this cup to be followed by a WC bid for next? ;p

Hey LE been a while, how you doing?
Yep Starblaydia. Jastica is a puppet of mine too just so you know. As is Xixan (Xixan, and PF signed up for Trotsgrad tourney cause did not think I would get enough sign ups) meaning I have 5 nations total.
Okay, one other thing, I need to know when WC 24 & BoF starts plz cause North Beach Sharks (PF's team) are also in another tourney in the Heartland which runs Aug 2-10th and well they cannot be in two places at the same time so really need to know this so I can set their starting lineup in WC24 (they will attend just their starting line up may be a bit different, that is if the WC24 or BoF games are during the above dates)
Oh yeah in terms of how the nations relate to one another, assuming anyone is interested, is as follows:
-PF founded as city states starting in 1500s, formed nation of PF in 2005
-residents of Trotsgrad were city states until 1985 when united under dictator, recent civil war caused the formation of the nation of Trebnak. Residents from both these nations emigrated from Locke Harbour, PF (capital) in 1000 approx (meaning that though they came from same area they are not related and do not know of one another nor correspond with one another except in situations such as this where international events are being staged).
-Xixan, and Jastica are their own seperate entities which only deal with PF, Trots, and Trebnak during int'l sports events. Jastica in fact has no dealings with the other 4 while Xixan played recent matches verses Trots and PF but has no dealings with Trebnak.

Brazillico Announces Three-Friendly Tour
The Brazillican Football Association have announced a barnstorming tour of friendlies to three competitive football nations.
Brazillico vs Krytenia [22 July]
Brazillico @ Fmjpheonix [25 July]
Brazillico @ Liverpool England [27 July]
"We've got ourselves quite a line-up of top quality teams" said Joaquim Lynch, president of the BFA. "Both Liverpool England and Krytenia made it to the elimination round of the last World Cup and we should have our hands full with Fmjpheonix's all out attack. Playing teams like this will definately give our guys more experience and challenge than facing those lowly BoF sides. I expect our team to be fully prepared to be able to take on anyone once we reach World Cup qualification."
OOC: For friendlies, I like to use real matches for scorinating, picking a team before the match and then going with that score. At this time of year, I figure we'll have to look to the Americas for our matches. I don't mind being the dog, so that should cause too many problems like "But I wanted to be Real Madrid!". ;)

[SIZE=5] KINGDOM OF ELRICH ANNOUNCES DESIRE TO TAKE PLACE IN WORLD CUP

This would be the first time that the nation took place in any sporting event, but the King was hopeful this evening that his application to join the World Cup would be successful,
"I cannot confirm anything yet," commented Elrich, "But the early signs are good, and I know that if we are allowed into the tournament, we have a team capable of doing our small nation proud".
It is believed that the excited but nervous nation will discover their fate within the next 24 hours, and it is rumoured that if their bid is succesful, the great King Elrich (previously of Bucan Icons in Korea) wishes to wear the number 9 jersey himself, in a bid to bring glory upon his adoring nation.

I think you'll find you actually have 93 nations on the list you so handily copy-pasted from the first post of this thread. Plus there's been no checking for ex-nations yet.
Just what are you doing, Kry? :D
Twas true. Though considering that we have the entire length of the Baptism of Fire tournament before the cup draw can take place, I think we should be pushing first for 98, and then maybe even 102!

Of course when the BoF actually starts there'll need to be some notice of sorts that no new newbs will be able to gain any ranking points before the WC itself starts.

Time for a bump methinks.
The DFA's department of scorinators and sign-ups would like to declare two things:
1) As no more has been heard from Sibastia, Stryffe and Blaceria, and as they are all under the ownership of one owner (breaking the no puppets first time round AND the one puppet rule), all three are to be eliminated from the list of sign-ups henceforth.
2) We are looking for five (5) more entries for World Cup 24, taking the total to 98. After that, no more will be accepted.
Thank you.

The Holy Empire of Jon Parkin would love to be a part of this special event, after our rollercoaster journey to the quarter-finals of the Under 21 World Cup.
Unfortunately as Jon Parkin is a puppet of Elrich, or the other way round, only one of these nations can enter the World Cup.
The 'main' nation requires a KPB ranking other than zero (i.e. it needs to have taken part in a World Cup) before a puppet can be entered.
Zanziik will participate.

OOC: by my count, that makes 2 spots left.... (apologies if I've miscounted and missed out).
Note that the following IC post tries to initially sign up a puppet of the newly-restored Alasdair I Frosticus (hosts of WC2). But given that Frosticus hasn't even attempted to qualify for the WC since WC7, I don't know if I have any current ranking points. If I don't, then just this once, Alasdair I Frosticus will come out of retirement and field a team in the hope that this'll help build the necessary ranking points to enter the Archregimancy into future tournaments.
IC:
By the orders of our Lords and Masters in the Holy Empire of Alasdair I Frosticus, the Holy Empire of the Archregimancy would like to send our team of footballing Orthodox Monks into World Cup Qualifying.
Should this prove impossible due to ranking issues, the Basileus has permitted us to say on his behalf that he would like to enter Alasdair I Frosticus in the cup instead. A confirming message from his Majesty will be sent very soon.
Peace be with you.

The Foreign Minister of the Holy Empire of Alasdair I Frosticus confirms the above statement by our loyal servants of the Archregimancy. If the Archregimancy is unable to participate, we will open the doors to the Dreamed Realm once more, and enter the World Cup ourselves for the first time since World Cup 7.
It the whim of the Basileus that any home matches - whether in the Archregimancy or Alasdair I Frosticus - shall take place in a stadium dreamed into the form of the belly of a whale.
All Hail the Basileus!

Updated to Prince Aidan.
One. Spot. Left.
And Lardantuon, you have made life very hard for the rest of us (and especially the hosts) by taking up six posts in the Roster thread. Your roster, formation and RP permissions should ideally be in one simple post that can easily be linked to, not six. Your posts about your stadia, Manager quotes and such should go in the Pre-World Cup 24 RP Thread, where they will earn you som RP bonus. Please stop posting in the Roster thread.
ELRICH WORLD CUP SQUAD ANNOUNCED
Now, this leads me to believe that Lardantuon is a puppet of Elrich. Which, considering that a recent spelling out of the rules involving Elrich has only recently been issued, is a pretty silly thing to do.
And it's not allowed.
So Elrich/Jon Parkin/Lardantuon. Tell us which ONE of your nations is to be involved, or we will involve none at all.
NOTE: This also means that there are now two spaces left.
The Democratic Empire of Palixia would like to join the cup as one of the two remaining spots...
Well, investigations are ongoing.
All I can say is that anyone signing up from here onwards is not guarenteed a place. But it is still possible you could find yourself in the cup anyway, whether it be becuase someone is thrown out, an ex-nation, or whatever else may happen. :)
Well, the investigation has been... well, it's been done. And the conclusion we have come to is that both Elrich and Lard can participate.
So the cup is now full!
Any sign-ups from here on in will be reserves. Thank you.

And yes, Kaze, I'm back. And do my high school students ever have a hole to dig themselves out of before they get back to the quarterfinals where they belong :D
What about the puppets? If their main state is in as well, couldn't they get booted and spots opened for people with one nation who want in?
Well, I think it says somewhere in the rules about puppets being kicked. But first we'll look at expanding the cup before we go kicking puppets.
If we need to, though, 0-0 Is Evil (Druida's puppet) will offer itself as first in the queue.
EDIT: Raptor Claw is now an ex-nation. Everyone move up a place!
That coupled with 0-0 Is Evil moving to first reserve will let everyone in.

As this is the only thread in which the nation has been called "Alan Shearer", we'll take that as a typo. Though as an Arsenal fan, I do request that the nation change its name to "Henry Heaven". ;)
