Hey all, I was inspired by Dontgonearthere's thread on 18th-19th century imperialism (here: http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=427565), but thought it would be interesting if instead of choosing RL nations to RP during this period, we chronicled the history of our own nations during this time period. I was thinking this should be open to any nations who during this time period were based on Western ideas. If anyone's interested, just post some general info about your nation during that time here and if we get enough people I'll try and start something in the next few days.

Potential diplomatic problems: engaging in a large-scale military buildup, government-sponsored piracy

Buechoria

OOC: I'm in.
Independence: Never had to gain independence
Location: Verdesia
Economy: Average
Political Freedoms: Good
Civil Rights: Excellent
Government style: Federal republic
Economy: Fruits and vegetables, various metals,
History:
Discovered by a band of German sailors, they marked it's location and returned home. A colonization party of about 500 was sent back to establish an outpost.
Quickly, conditions worsened as winter approached and everyone needed to cooperate and work together. To raise morale, the dozen or so slaves they had brought with them were freed, and like the women, given the same rights as the white males. Now on equal footing and much happier, they accomplished much more work and were adequately prepared for winter.
As time went by, Germany forgot about the lush island, moving onto bigger and better things. Buechoria's population increased rapidly, assisted by a steadily rising immigrant population, which was mostly French people. The south-western island became their new home as their language and culture spread.
The south-western island is mostly farmland and vineyards while the north-eastern island is industrialized.

Caladonn
03-07-2005, 14:47
Nation: The Great Empire of Caladonn
Independence: May 24th, 1691
Location: East Coast of US in RL
Economy: Frightening- Based on mining, forestry, craftmanship, building, trading, and farming.
Political Freedoms: Good
Civil Rights: Average
Government Style: Democracy
History:
Caladonn was discovered by British Sailors in the late 16th century, and soon boatloads of colonists, disaffected with life in Britain, flocked to the virgin shores. Soon, a thriving trade was developed with Europe, and the population continued to expand at a blinding rate. However, after around a century, both the colonists and the British became disaffected with one another, due in part to Britain's mistreatment, and wars in Europe. Therefore, a mutual agreement was reached in which Caladonn would become semi-autonomous, while still obeying the British. In time, however, this evolved into complete autonomy, with trading practices still flowering between the only slightly estranged nations.
When Caladonn gained complete autonomy, it was determined that a new government should be established, and the Caladonnian Senate was founded, to which senators were elected from the ever-increasing Provinces. A Chancellor was also elected, to head the senate.
From then, although the title of "Empire" remained with Caladonn, the government has gradually become more liberal and democratic, with an efficient court system and far more. The populace of Caladonn is now looking beyond their borders, seeking new nations.

OOC Note about sailing ships:
Since we all seem to be working around piracy and shipping I thought I should point some key factors out about ships sailing the ocean blue in 1807
Watches: Four Hours Long (except the Dog Watches which are only two hours long) http://www.royal-navy.mod.uk/static/pages/8085.html
Bells: rung at the half an hour up to eight bells (end of watch)
Noon: Important because this is when a ship fixed it's longitude and latitude.
Latitude was with the sextant by measuring the distance of the sun from the horizon at noon.
longitude was calculated by finding the time diffrence between noon at your point and that of your home port using chronometers.
Also the British had the following 'meal' plan set up
Breakfast 6:00 am
Dinner (12:00)
Supper (4:00 pm)
Warrent Officers typically ate an hour later than the crew and the officers after the Warrant Officers.

Thanks for that! Although I am relatively knowledgeable on naval warefare of that time, I don't know that much about the life on board.
Nation: The Tulgarian Catholicon
Independence: The Catholicon itself controls a small empire until fragmentation and military defeat at the end of the C19th and recreation as the Grand Duchy, officially subservient to [yet unidentified foreign empire]
Location: [vast yet unidentified European-style continent]
Economy: Largely agricultural with coal-mining and industry taking off painfully slowly
Government: Czar holds ultimate power, but each male descendant of the first Czar is legally given land in the form of a Principality within the Catholicon... freedoms fluctuate from one Principality to the next.

Morvonia

Independence:April 3rd 1673
Location:Island just off the mainland
Economy:strong
Political Freedoms: Excellent
Civil Rights:average
Government style:just turned from monarch to republic
Economy: A very small private sector is dominated by the Arms Manufacturing industry.
nation animal:The Horse
currency:Miin
languages:greek,spanish,english.
goverment type:sensible
UN Category: New York Times Democracy
millitary:well supplied...but out of date in some aspects, veterans of several wars.
history:On June 21st 1665,the country of Morvonia exploded into civil war.The king (and puppet of the spanish who control the country) Minorous IV,called it an outrage....but the greek freedom fighters did not think so,as they did not have the same freedoms as the rest of the country. The resistance leader the greek noble man,Alexandros Stephenapolis led the greek fighters from near collapse all the way to the walls of the capital,Nipas, in the ensueing battle for the streets,Alex was mortally wounded and told his brother who faught by his side to "bury me with my sword and let my blood be poured on the king, so he shall feel the blood of a freeman." In his honor the city was renamed "EmatooAlecou" which means in greek Blood of Alex and his spirit is said to guard the battleground were he fell. And althought the constitution was passed on March 12th 1784,a law was passed that declared the countries official day of independence was the date of Alex's death not the day the monarch fell (1 day after his death) or the day the constitution was passed. The country then started to trade with the english and became renowned musket makers for them during the napolionic era.Today it still shares both spainish and greek culture. It has a strong economy mainly due to its expertise in the arms industry, for making very reliable and cheap weapons.
FACTS: Gun control is a major issue for Morvonia since it produces major amounts of guns per year.
Morvonia has alot of religions with a large majority being greek orthodox (about 39%)
The blood festival, held on the anniversery of Alex's death, includes a large parade, fire works display and more outdoor activities. The parade includes a float with a man dressed like a king dancing around and the onlookers can buy cow blood and toss it at him and the sword of Alex, the only time it is allowed to be seen outside the royal musium's vault.
