Streets of Anatoba
Anatoba City, Austar Union

With brisk acceleration, Indigo grasped onto the sill of the window which remained open - despite his advisor's security concern. There was hardly afterall anyone whom wanted to kill him, and even if there was, chances were slim they were able to gain access to the Union. The car was black, sleek, almost menacing. And it reflected to perfection, having been detailed before every trip though the city. The clouds above, the streets around; one could say that the panels on the automobiles were like a mirror, only not. Anyhow, they wouldnt stay particularly perfect for long - today was a rainy day, and the puddles splashed lightly when a tyre had passed through their liquid form. It was cool, the air had gained a bite. And so Indigo was forced to wind up the window afterall that he said. Now warmer inside his limosine, he was left comfortable to lightly discuss with the man beside him.

"I look forward to reading their plans," he commented.

The man looked over, "Yes, it will be interesting to see what they have fathomed. I sure hope it isnt ugly."

Indigo winked, "Extradite never designs a bad blueprint. You'll see."

"Im not so sure," replied the man, still cautious. "I remember back a few decades ago..."

"Oh come on. The company is hardly the same, you know that." reasoned Indigo, slightly annoyed.

The man relaxed and settled from his position, "That is true Lord Blue. Anyhow, may I ask you a question? Why did you decide to ask Tartarus to join us alongside this project?"

Indigo took a toothpick and started picking at his teeth, "Because Claude. Rachel, the Delegate from Tartarus had said herself that they were looking for more involvement - foriegn wise."

"And our own benefit?" questioned the man, curiously.

"To build upon our own links, to expand our political horizons, and to provide more opportunity. You know that." replied Indigo, still picking at his teeth.

"Right," replied Claude. He knew he would have to draft a quick letter to the Foriegn Ministry of Tartarus soon. And he would be the man sent.

{SUBJECT: Joint Project Proposal}

Friends, I am contacting you today to open discussion with you, on a proposal I would like to make to you. If you remember from some time ago, your Delegate to my conference, Rachel, had indictated that the powers of Tartarus may be looking for opportunities for which they can involve themselves in - as a means to expand your own political horizons.

With this in mind, I have one opportinity I could provide you with - the construction and or development of a system from which can enable you to travel beyond this fair planet, into the powers of Sol and beyond if you choose. I am aware that many of the friends of Tartarus are in capable of interplanetary travel, and that unfortunately, you are not. And whilst I am a tad apprehensive that you require some kind of military presense in Sol, I think it may be beneficial for the powers of Tartarus if they do have some method of travel beyond Earth - something which would enable you to endure on your quest of expanding horizon. I have my own project, anyhow which may prove interesting to you. Would there be a chance that I could send an envoy to Tartarus to discuss with you this idea I have? Since it is difficult to describe in such a short message, I think it would be best if we have a more, in-person meeting.

Yours In Excellence,

Lord Indigo Blue

Ewige Verdammnis Palace, Erebus, Tartarus

The blazing sun had reached the apex of its journey across the Tartarian sky, and was beginning its slow descent into afternoon. The sound of one of the grounds men driving the mower around the lawn filled the quiet office, coming in through the open window. A light breeze blew gently, sending the trees outside into a gently sway. The picture outside was perfect, which made the figure that gazed upon the scene below take a deep sigh.

A knock on the door, brought the attention of the Empress back into the room. She walked over to her desk, as she called for the visitor to enter, knowing before the door was opened that Emma Sarie, Secretary of Foreign Affairs, would enter. Gehenna gave her a smile in greeting, indicating for her minister to take the seat opposite her desk. The other woman bowed slightly, and made her way over to the chair.

“I hope all is well in the world, Emma.” Gehenna took her seat and made herself comfortable, before looking at the woman before her. “What is this matter that you thought you should bring to my attention?”

Emma leant forward, handing a copy of a dossier that had been pulled together in short notice, following the arrival of a transmission from the Austar Union. “It appears that Miss Sinclair has made an impression on them, and they want to help us improve our international standing.” She leant forward again, this time passing a copy of the message. “They seem interested in some joint venture. They are requesting a meeting to discuss it.”

Opening the dossier, Gehenna ran her eyes over the details inside, which contained information on the nation in question. She then looked at the communiqué sent by Lord Blue. “I see no harm in setting up a meeting and discussing what we can do for each other.” She raised her eyes and looked at Emma, frowning as she thought for a moment. “Arrange for someone from GT Technologies to be present. Preferably Marcus Davenport or Sebastian Croft. If possible both of them.”

Emma nodded and scribbled down some notes. “I shall get onto it right away.”

“And send word to Lord Blue that we would be honoured to meet with his delegation.” The Empress smiled at Emma. “Not that I need to tell you your job. If there is nothing else to discuss, I shall head off for lunch. I have to be over the other side of Erebus by two o’clock, and I want to dine before hand.”

Making the customary farewells, Emma headed back to her office, to dispatch a reply to Austar Union, and to arrange everything for their arrival, leaving only the confirmation of the date unclear.

Somewhere, In the Skies of Tartarus

"A good day, dont you think?" asked Claude, on the telephone to his wife.

"It is dear," she replied on the other line. "Stay safe darling, I'll see you when you get home."

"Certainly," he answered, and hung up the line.

Claude sat back into the comfortable, leather chair. Sitting on board the skyship, he could relax in the fact that all the details and arrangements had been made. He would arrive in the capital of Tartarus, and being a former engineer - would discuss the opportunity for co-oporation between the Absolutionist State of Austar Union, and Tartarus. Rumoured to be the land of hell, Claude was more curious than anything. Usually discrediting such rumours to be false, he would find it interesting at the least as to what that nation was really like.

Cant be too bad, he pondered to himself. Im sure its not hell, specifically.

Soon, Claude would be enjoying his time with a delegation from Lady Gehenna, and he was ready. Dressed in clothing which could be described more as 'fashionable' than anything, he represented the nation well. Indigo was a proud man at home, and although he was unable (or unwilling) to travel on behalf of himself this time round, the national leader could rest in the fact that Claude was more than capable. Afterall, being a former engineer, he knew exactly what he had to say, knew exactly what Indigo had planned for the project, and knew exactly what he was talking about. Knowledge helps.

The executive lounge overlooked the runway, at Erebus International Airport, which meant that as soon as the plane landed, the greeting party would be able to get into position for the arrival of the representative from the Austar Union. The weather in Tartarus was warm and sunny, and meant that the party could wait outside without fear of getting wet or having to hold umbrellas, which never seemed to give the same first impression.

Emma Sarie glanced out of the window, her eyes skywards as she watched another plane descend and land, before taxiing to its respective gate. At the sound of a slight cough behind her, Emma turned to face Marcus Davenport, who had accompanied her to the airport.

“Latest news is that they should be landing in ten minutes,” he explained as he handed her a glass of lemonade. “The meeting is set for two o’clock?” He lifted his own glass to his lips as she took hers and followed suit.

Nodding her head, Emma checked her watch, and smiled. “I wanted to make sure we could get in some refreshments before we started. There is nothing I hate more than talking on am empty stomach.” Another sip of her drink to freshen her mouth. “Is Sebastian meeting us there? He was a little up in the air when I contacted him this morning. He seems to have a lot on his plate at the moment.”

“I think this meeting has got him in a spin. The Space Division of GT Tech is always looking for ways to expand past what we have now. This could aid his department a lot.” Marcus frowned a little. “I think he was in a meeting with Morgan this morning, discussing the way ahead and finalising what we can and can’t agree to, and more importantly what we won’t agree to.”

Emma flicked her eyes towards the window again, as she answered. “Her Majesty has been in talks with Morgan for a few days. I know she wants this partnership to work. If we can do this, with zero fuss and deliver what we say we will, this could well open up Tartarus to a wider field.”

A laugh came from Marcus. “Which will mean an increase in the workload of you and your department. You can’t be overly happy about that.”

“Are you kidding? It means I can employ new staff, and get a bit of eye candy about the place.” Emma broke into laughter, matched moments later by Marcus. “To be honest, fresh blood is good for a department. You know Her Majesty is always saying so.”

Marcus nodded. “And we all know why. But that is a topic for another conversation.” He smiled at Emma and turned as they were approached by a man in Airport uniform. “Yes?”

“Sir, Ma’am. The plane is descending for landing. I am to escort you down.” The man flicked his eyes between the two as he spoke.

Emma nodded. “Then lead the way.” She turned to Marcus. “Now remember, you are on your best behaviour. We want to create a good impression on the people from Austar Union.” She flipped open the dossier she was holding and ran her eyes quickly down the page, rereading the man’s name so as not to incorrectly address him.

Moments later, the two and a host of assistants and security personnel, stood down on the tarmac, waiting for the delegate to emerge from the plane. Behind them, there was a convoy of cars, waiting to whisk the party off to their destination.

With a smooth glide, the craft landed with presision onto the runway. Overall, the trip had taken but a few hours, one of the many fortunes of the hypersoar engines on board. Since the Union had prospered, it had been decided that all conventional aircraft would be replaced with these, now that they could afford it. The ride was more comfortable, much faster, the cabin more spacious, more luxurious. Now instead of the only fancy being the leather seats dedicated for use of the Ambassador (or whomever was actually using it), the craft had many features even unknown to the pilots. Still, it really was a fantastic craft, and the wine no longer needed a differently designed glass than normal. Now that the landing could be made smoother, it was almost possible to fill a cup to brim, and expect it not to spill. Almost.

"Are you ready, Claude?" asked the woman beside him.

He glanced over, his eyes resting more on the outside rather than her, "Ready as ever."

They both stood to their feet as the craft came to a halt. Indeed, outside the Tartarus Administration had provided a welcoming crew. There were a few who seemed important standing there, and Claude looked forward to meeting them. He had no security besides the woman beside him, of whom had been taught in the highest of martial arts. She'd rather not carry weapons and whatnot, especially on a friendly visit as this - holding a similar view to Lord Indigo Blue himself. In the meantime, she was carefully disguised as his assistant, being dressed as 'business-like' as Claude. And so he managed to straighten his suit before the heavy door cluncked open. He smiled as the warm air rushed inside, filling the cabin, and stepped down to the level of the welcoming party, of whom were standing just before him.

Nodding with respect, he smiled and focused his attention to who was obviously in charge here.

As the party from Austar Union descended from the plane, Emma cleared her thought with a low cough, and looked briefly at her companion who was staring intently at the new arrivals, almost as if he was checking out their appearance and judging their abilities from their looks. She shook her head, and wondered why she did not approach the Empress about sending Heads of Divisions to meet visiting dignitaries.

Once the party reached the bottom of the steps, she took a step forward, her hand already outstretched to shake the man’s, a smile fixed firmly in place. “Welcome to Tartarus. I am Emma Sarie, Secretary of Foreign Affairs.” She indicated the man standing to her left. “And this is Marcus Davenport, Head of GT Technologies Research Division.” She released the visitor’s hand, and watched as her companion mirrored her actions, as she took the hand of the woman walking slightly behind.

Claude smiled and was sure to look each in the eye and thank them individually. He stood back once all the official jargon had been completed, although to some it would not have been considered at all over. The two had only just met afterall, and Claude had to introduce himself and his associate to the fine welcoming party which had been assembled for his own delight. Some didnt even bother with that... Foolish and rude some were, but not officials from Tartarus, obviously.

"Thankyou for having me here." Claude opened, chuckling a bit later on in his introductory. "Although I am sure you already know my name, you may know me by Claude Hansworth, although I prefer Mr. Hansworth for now. My associate, is Ms Lauren Jenks. She wont really be participating too much in talks, but will be assisting me in these matters."

"Nice to meet you," Lauren said, nodding in respect to each of them.

Claude smiled, "I must say, that from the air it appears as if you keep Tartarus well. I am impressed."

Emma Sarie smiled at Claude, her eyes sparkling with pleasure at the compliment bad to the nation. “We do our best.” She waited for the introductions to be completed and indicated a line of cars waiting to carry the party to the Ewige Verdammnis Palace where they would have a brief introduction to the Empress and then partake in a little refreshment before commencing the meeting, which would be conducted in the Palace.

“We were unsure how many people would be accompanying you, but we should all be able to travel in the same vehicle.” She began to walk towards the vehicles. She was paired off with Claude, while Marcus walked slightly behind with Lauren. “Accommodation has been arranged for you, if you require it. We left all the details open.”

The man beside the car, pulled open the door as the group approach. Emma waited for her guest to enter before climbing in herself, the two taking the back seat. She watched as Lauren followed by Marcus entered the vehicle, taking the seats opposite. Once the party was settled inside, the driver retook his seat, and began the journey towards the heart of Erebus where the Palace sat.

As they set off, Emma turned to Claude. “Mr Hansworth, please feel free to ask for anything you may require during your stay.” She smiled. “And we are more than willing to answer any of your questions, should you have any.” Sitting back in her seat, she made herself comfortable for the journey.

Claude smiled, "Thankyou Emma, I appreciate your hospitality."

As the car began to leave the tarmac, Claude's eyes rested on the world outside. He was curious, as to how the society of Tartarus had been engineered. How had the buildings been constructed, what were the important events its citizens enjoyed, what did they enjoy... questions ran through his mind as he silently watched the world go by. Still, he thought no way of actually asking them, without making it seem like he was looking for an encyclopedia - rather than relations. Information was important, afterall, but not everything. In fact, he could not ever think to himself of a friendship in history which had been based soley on the introduction of information. Encarta had been created for that one. That, and the Collins Encyclopedia... yada yada yada. Point made anyhow, one cannot have a relational experience with a book.

"One thing I would love to experience actually," spoke up Claude. "Is general life inside Tartarus. Perhaps you would gift me with some kind of guided tour - otherwise I am fine to travel alone if its a better arrangement."

Lauren in the meantime, had remained completely silent. She wasnt here to talk, she was here to do her job and to be the assistant to Claude himself. Bloody Beaurocrats...

“Mr Hansworth, I assure you that is something we can quite easily arrange.” Emma said with a smile, happy to do anything to promote the Empire. “I’m not sure exactly you want to see, but I will run you up an itinerary and you can let me know whether there is anything you particularly wish to see.” As she spoke she made a brief note on her palm top, which seemed to appear out of nowhere, but was on her at all times. “Just to make sure I don’t forget.” She laughed lightly, as it once more disappeared out of sight.

“We have a suite reserved for you at the Imperial Hotel, one of the best in the city. It is available for as long or as short as you require it.” She looked out of the window, passed her guest as she checked to see their location. “The Palace is almost an hour away, but it will allow you a brief look at the nation. Once we arrive you will have a brief audience with Her Imperial Majesty, as she is very interested in the offer from Lord Blue, and then we will break for refreshment before beginning the meeting.”

She paused for a moment, and then smiled. “We have a room put aside for Miss Jenks and yourself, so that you may freshen up after your journey, but this is entirely dependent on your needs of course.” She ran through the list of items she had on her list mentally, sure that she had covered anything but knew that it would come to her eventually if she had forgotten anything.

"Thankyou very much," replied Claude, once again.

With little much to say from herein, his eyes drifted out towards the window. Where he watched the city pass, and the civillians wander about their daily lives. In the meantime, Claude simply engaged in small-talk from now, until the time when he had reached their destination.

The rest of the journey, passed with general topics, Emma stopping every now and then to point out a building or place of interest. As they drove, their surrounding began to change, from the newly developed and still growing areas around the capital, growing steadily older and darker as they entered the origins of the city, the architecture changing as they rolled through the historical buildings. As they went, high upon the hill, overlooking the people and casting its eye across the land, was the Ewige Verdammnis Palace.

The drive through the capital up the hill that lead towards the Palace was fifteen minutes and briefly they drove past open country, a contrast to the sprawling buildings of down below. As they neared the gate, one of three that lead into the Palace grounds, and heavily guarded at all times, the car pulled to a halt, and the driver spoke to one of the guards, who poked his head inside before waving them through, the huge wrought iron structures swinging mechanically open.

The drive up to the Palace was not a short one, and took the car several minutes to make its way up its length, before coming to a stop outside the main entrance. As the car halted, the security man in the front passenger seat jumped out, and pulled open the door. The party exited the vehicle, Emma followed by Claude, then Lauren with Marcus bringing up the rear.

As they made their way up the steps to the door, which seemed to open by magic at their approach, Emma paused to allow the party to take a look at their surroundings. “The Ewige Verdammnis Palace has been the seat of the Tartarian Imperial Family for nearly nine hundred years. Of course, there have been alterations over that time, but the original building makes up the centre of the palace.” She pointed to the wings and various other details. “As you can see, through time each of the subsequent monarchs has added their own touches to the place.”

Leading them on, they entered the main reception hall, which was dominated by a lavish staircase that went up the centre then split left and right. A red carpet covered most of each step, guiding the eye of the beholder to the huge gold framed portrait that resided at the top of the stairs. The eyes of the Empress Gehenna gazed down upon all arrivals.

“If you will follow me, I will show you to the anteroom we have put aside for your use.” She led them down a corridor that ran along the left side of the staircase. “I will inform her Imperial Majesty that you have arrived and then I will escort you to her.” As they reached a door, she stopped outside and indicated for them to enter, outside was waiting one of the palace’s staff. “If you require anything, Mr Larron will be pleased to assist. Do you have any questions?”
Austar Union

Claude entered the palace, amazed at the decor having been built around him. Built obviously with not just a hint of splendor, it gave him the instant and truthful impression as to how powerful the Imperial Family had been, and still was. Such was the power of the family, within him he felt a deep respect and adhererance to their own power. The painting of Empress Gehenna herself, with her eyes burning deep into his inner being, remained in his mind as he followed Emma to the room that they had put aside. Never before had he actually stayed within a palace so powerful - certainly the Austar Union didnt have any kind of Monarch or what-not, so what would have been a palace, was a Statehouse more than anything. Not as grand by far, but fitting for the ways of his homeland. Here though, amazing was the only way to describe it. And he even pondered what hidden powers the Imperial Family held, and still retained. Surely there would be many, never to be shared with the known and informational world he resided in.

Now at the door, his hand rested on the handle when Emma asked him if he needed any last thing before she left him to his own, or with Lauren of course. He pondered carefully before answering.

"Err..." thought Claude aloud at the door, "As for exploration of the Imperial Palace. What areas should I know to avoid, and what areas should I perhaps seek instead - that is, assuming I am allowed to explore?"

For such a grand location, it would be insanity to not have the slightest of interest.
Gehenna Tartarus

Emma, who was in the midst of turning to go off to inform the Empress, paused in her movement and looked back at her guest, a polite smile on her lips. “It would be preferable if we add a tour of the Palace to your itinerary, I think. This is the Empress’ home and it would be easier for me to show you around rather than point out parts that you can and cannot visit.” She hoped that she had explained that without appearing rude.

“I shall go and inform her Imperial Majesty that you are here, and then I will come back and escort you to her.” She looked at him questioningly and then began once more to head off further down the corridor, leaving the guests in the capable hands of Larron.

Waiting in her office, Gehenna had already been informed of the arrival of Claude and his companion, and was reading through a report on the proposal before the meeting. It was no surprise when a few minutes later Alexander introduced the arrival of Emma. As the door swung open, Gehenna gave her Secretary of Foreign Affairs a smile in greeting, and indicated for her to take a seat.

“Our visitors have arrived safely?” Gehenna enquired, even though she already knew the answer.

Emma nodded. “They are just freshening up, and I’ll bring them here once you are ready.”

The Empress fell silent for a moment. “I am free now, so once they have finished doing what they need to do, you can bring them here.” Gehenna noticed the questioningly look on the older woman’s face. “Is there a problem?”

“Not so much a problem, as a request.” Emma smiled. “It seems that the Palace has caught the eye of Mr Hansworth, and he has enquired about a tour.”

Gehenna nodded. “I shall leave that to you to arrange, Emma. You know the rules of visitation.” She gave her companion a smile and then paused in thought. “I have had a thought. Rather than a meeting in here, bring our guests to the Green Lounge and we will take refreshments there. Mr Hansworth may appreciate the location more.”

The two women conversed for a few more minutes, before Emma left to return to escort Claude and Lauren to the next event on the agenda.

* * * * *

Thirty minutes later, Emma knocked on the door of the anteroom and waited for assent to enter. Stepping through the door, she gave both occupants a smile, approaching Claude. “Mr Hansworth, Miss Jenks, if you are ready, we will pay our respects to the Empress.” As they began to head for the door, Emma turned to Claude. “I have spoke to Her Imperial Majesty, and she has consented my giving you a tour of the Palace.”

Claude was just finished washing his hands when there was a knock at the door. In the room, it had been decorated well, just as well as the rest of the palace. On the wall, art had been displayed, presumerably the history of Tartarus. Hundreds, perhaps thousands of years. He turned and walked calmy to the door, opening it. Emma was standing there, and she politely entered (upon invitation within), informing him that the Empress was ready if he was. So much depth this place held - by far it was different to the Union. He liked it nevertheless, and it seemed that he found Tartarus rather pleasant more than anything. Pleasant, and Powerful. What a defeat of the childish rumours at least.

He nodded, still in his shirt and suspenders, "Thankyou. I would appreciate it if we could begin about now, yes. Let me just get my jacket."

Lauren was already ready at the door, so typical. Claude appeared once again, now putting his jacket on and straightening his appearance. He smiled at Emma and carefully thought for one moment before closing the door behind him, now in the corridor.

"Good. I have everything I need. Lets go."

Leading the group out of the door, Emma headed down the corridor back the way they had come, until they were back in the main entrance hall, the staircase once more dominating their surroundings as she led them down the right corridor. Once again, as they walked, she pointed out paintings and other items of interest. Their was a difference to the portraits, this time rather than just being of prominent people in Tartarus, these were made up of the Empress’ Ancestors, all manner of family portraits depicting the Imperial Family through the ages.

Emma never claimed to have the best knowledge of all who each of the people were, so most she left unmentioned, just pointing out the more prominent ones that she could name. Finally they arrived outside one of the large double doors that led off the corridor. She knocked gently then opened the door at the assent that was given. Pushing the door open, she stepped aside to let Claude and Lauren in before her.

“Your Majesty, may I present Mr Claude Hansworth and Miss Lauren Jent.” She walked beside them as they moved forward. As if by magic, the door behind them closed, it had been pulled shut by one of the footmen who had been standing nearby. Emma turned to the guests. “May I present, Her Imperial Majesty, Empress Gehenna of Tartarus.”

Gehenna, who was seated when the group entered, rose to her feet as they moved forward. She flicked her eyes between the two, and indicated for them to take a seat. “It is a pleasure to welcome you to Tartarus. “We are always delighted to make the acquaintance of new nations and their people.” As the others moved towards a seat, Gehenna lowered herself back down in her chair. “I thought it would be prudent to combine my meeting with you and refreshments.”

Just as she finished speaking, almost as if on cue, there was a knock at one of the side doors, and a host of staff entered with trays laden with food and drinks. They began to silently lay out the spread on a table at the far end of the room. This interruption highlighted the fact, that the room had contained more than just the Empress, as her two bodyguards, moved from their place to allow the staff to work.

As he entered, Claude smiled at the sight of the Empress, crowned in all her glory. So here was the woman, the might of that which the portrait had spoken on. Different, somewhat, but still powerful nevertheless. Both of them in respect of the Royal, bowed to what they had researched was normal for the average politeness level. The humbled themselves in her presence, and now they could begin. Sitting at his invitation, Claude sat directly across from Gehenna, whilst Lauren - still as dull as usual, sat to his right. This was in fact a hidden tradition in the Union, whereby the idea was that a swordsman was always right handed. With a man's associates at his left, should he need to draw his weapon, he risks slicing them. But at his right, they remain safe from danger. Not so well known, but it was history nevertheless. In the meantime, as the food and drinks were arriving, Claude spoke up.

"Thankyou Empress," he replied. "The pleasure is all mine, I assure you. And thankyou for your decent hospitality, you are surely leaving a healthy impression."

He smiled, and took a piece of bread at his invitation. Not eating it yet, one could suppose it looked as if he had taken more for decoration than anything. But alas, this was not the case.

“A good first impression is always beneficial. It can sometimes be very difficult to alter a bad impression.” Gehenna smiled, her eyes fixed on Claude as she spoke. “Miss Sarie has been telling me about your desire for a tour of the Palace, I am sure she conveyed to you my answer.” She picked up her cup of tea that had been poured for her, and took a sip. “Please, go ahead and eat if you so desire. I thought it would be pleasant to make the occasion a little less formal, which is why I suggested we move to the Green Lounge rather than my office.”

Lowering her cup to the table, she flicked her eyes between the two guests. “I was looking over the draft that was sent from Austar Union.” She indicated the dossier that she had brought with her. “I was most surprised that Lord Blue thought of Tartarus over the many other nations that are more technologically advanced than we are. I understand his reasons for doing so; he quotes his desire for furthering our international relations. I just hope that we are able to deliver what you might expect from us.” She laughed lightly. “And here was I trying to keep this informal.”

Claude nodded, taking a bite from his piece of bread, "Yes. I do like things rather more comfortable. And your palace is simply amazing."

He listened as she continued on and then answered her once again, this time chuckling. WIth the plate kept fairly close beneath his chin, he was sure not to drop crumbs onto the carpet. Carpet of Gold. Surely everything must be worth a dime or two within the Imperial Palace.

"Business is still business, alas is it not?" he chuckled, then straightening his tone. "Anyhow to be completely honest Empress, I havent the faintest of clue as to why Lord Indigo Blue had chosen Tartarus as a suitable partner. One idea which springs to mind personally, and if I may suggest it to you is the fact that he is looking for methods of cooporating with states who are moving in a... similar direction. I guess this project especially was something he found useful, to spring our foriegn directorate toward a newer direction."
Gehenna Tartarus

Gehenna nodded. “That is very true, Mr Hansworth. No matter how much you try to steer clear of business it has the tendency to drive itself towards you.” She leaned forward and helped herself to a couple of grapes that were resting on top of a fruit bowl, she popped one into her mouth and ate as she pondered Claude’s suggestion, noting to herself that it could be any number of reasons that the Austar Union would contact them.

Finishing the first grape, she look flicked her eyes briefly towards the other two women in the room, who had fallen quiet as she spoke to Claude, before once more returning her attention to the man sitting opposite her. “I hope that Lord Blue finds relations with Tartarus as much as I am anticipating enjoying them. From what Ambassador Sinclair reported on her return from the Austar Union, there are many similarities and yet many differences between our two nations.”

She paused for a moment. “The most obvious, of course, is striving to grow the international sphere in which we both operate. It is partly for this reason that you and Miss Jent are sitting here today.” She smiled. “It is my deepest wish that out of this initial endeavour, not only will transportation be improved, but our relations will grow, going from strength to strength.”

Claude was silent and respectfully listened to the Empress as she spoke.

“It is my deepest wish that out of this initial endeavour, not only will transportation be improved, but our relations will grow, going from strength to strength,” she had replied to him smiling.

"Indeed then," he replied, swallowing the small piece of bread he had. "We have something in common Empress."

Claude paused as he noticed Lauren crossing her legs in the corner of his eye, and her eyes pausing downward to the papers she held.

"Anyhow Empress, I am sure you are perhaps eager to begin," he said, moving the meeting along to its true purpose. "Leaders tend to be on the busy side, especially evidently great ones such as yourself."

Gehenna looked at Claude and then Emma, before returning her attention to her guest. “It is true that I do find myself very busy, yet it was a pleasure to be able to make some time to meet you.” She rose from her seat, Emma following suit, having placed her cup on the table. “As you are eager to begin, I shall bid you farewell, with the hope that I get further opportunity to meet you before you and Miss Jent leave. She turned briefly to Emma. “If you can have a draft of the contents of the meeting on my desk in the morning, and then we can discuss the details then.”

Emma nodded, as the Empress turned back to Claude. “Emma will escort you to the meeting, I believe Mr Marcus Davenport and Mr Sebastian Croft are also attending.” She once more looked at Emma who gave a nod of assent. “All I can do is hope that everything goes to plan, and that we can help each other.” Shaking both of her guests hands, Gehenna made her farewells and left the room, her security personnel falling in behind her, leaving just the three others.

Flicking her gaze between the two, Emma indicated the door. “If we are ready to proceed, I shall escort us to the meeting.” She fixed her gaze on Claude. “Do you have any questions before we leave?”

Bidding the kind Empress goodbye, the pair of Austarians were indeed ready to follow Emma, of whom had clearly defined that she was too, ready to escort them.

"No questions," replied Claude. "But I must say, the Empress is more than kind enough. She makes an excellent hostess, and an evidently fantastic leader."

Emma smiled as she led the way out of the room. “I am sure she would be delighted to hear herself describe as such.” Leading them down the corridor, Emma took them back the way they had come, having to return to the same area of the Palace that they had originally seen upon arrival, near the anteroom that had been given to Claude and Lauren to freshen up in. As they walked passed the same portraits, Emma this time did not point them out nor did give any more information concerning their surroundings.

Finally they reached the location of the meeting, and Emma once more stood back and let her companions go through the door, before she followed them through. Her eyes instantly fixed on the two men that were already present in the room, their conversation coming to an end as the others arrived. Both men got to their feet, as Marcus Davenport, who had already met with the Austarians, made the introductions between Claude and Lauren and the Head of GT Technologies Space Division, Sebastian Croft.

Emma closed the door behind her, as the others once more took their seats. She invited the Austarians to take their seats, and then settled in her own at the head of the table, as she was chairing the meeting. “Ladies and gentlemen, welcome and thank you all for coming.” She flicked her eyes between the two sets of people. “As the introductions have been made, I think it might be a good idea for you, Mr Hansworth, to begin by detailing what you have in mind.”

Taking his seat, with Lauren (again) at his right, Claude listened to Emma before opening the negotiation stage between the two groups. He had smiled, and acknowledged each of the people here respectively, and now it was time to begin. Afterall, a partnership was afoot and it was time now to push forward into its humble beginnings. Toddlers must crawl afterall, and babies must first learn to lay before crawling. As if it were somewhat similar, their short time with the Empress was short, yet fruitful. Although, one could blame only themselves for their hasteful begin toward business relations. They hadnt meant to come rude, they actually had thought that the Empress would be joining them. Frowning inwardly, he hoped Indigo wouldnt be too displeased at his seemingly rudeness. Some people ought to have read the report clearly, and fully. Within it, it would have described for him of whom exactly would be present, and the Empress wasnt on the list. Foolish, foolish.

"Well, I am sure you have all a copy of the proposal which we have forwarded to you," he replied, opening himself and the business of the day to the table. "I guess now would be a proper time to elaborate on several points."

He paused while his eyes quickly darted down to the report in front of him, before continuing.

"A general outline really. Basically it has been noted from one of your delegates to a meeting with Indigo, that the powers within Tartarus were looking for a way to increase their exposure with the world around them. We also noted that Indigo was searching for methods of which he could build a future of prosperous partnerships between our two nations. We recognised a way each of us could furfull the needs of each other, and so this proposal was born," he explained carefully.

Claude finalised his general outline, "Also recognising that many of the nations Tartarus already is exposed to have some form of method to space-travel, we thought it suitable if we decided to propose some way that Tartarus could open their own transportation system into the realm of space, so that you may not only increase your ability to visit friends and allies abroad, but to also meet and formulate newer relations with other, space-faring nations. Considering that our needs within space could be met with the building of some kind of 'acceleration gate', and also considering that this gate would come in handy for your own operations, it had been decided to focus on a joint project between ourselves, to build this gate."

"Ultimately," he finished. "The benefits of this gate would be mutual - we would get our gate completed as we require it, you would gain a method of travel beyond the constraints of Earth itself - without having to piggy-back if you like, and the result of this project would mean hopefully, building further cooporation between our two states. I would like to hear your thoughts if possible."

The three Tartarians listened as Claude spoke, making odd notes as things came to mind, and waited until he was finished, each one of them silent for a moment until Emma spoke. Being as she was chairing the meeting, the two men from GT Tech let her answer first.

“Mr Hansworth, I speak for us all when I say that we have an opportunity to review the initial draft sent over by your nation, and the idea is one that has excited not just the three of us around this table, but has also been favourable received by her Imperial Majesty, as I am sure you were able to see for yourself.” She paused for a moment. “The Empire of Tartarus is not the most technically advance nation that you will come across, and it is true that we could be potentially held back by our lack of space ability. This is one of the reasons that we have agreed to further this idea with a meeting, so that we may understand fully what you require from us.”

She looked over at the two men alongside the table, opposite the Austarians. “These two gentlemen have a greater understanding than myself concerning our capabilities in both the research and space fields. They are the Heads of the departments which will be working most closely with you – as in the Austar Union – in bringing this plan to fruition.”

Her gaze flicked between the two Austarians, as she indicated the first man. “Mr Davenport is Head of our Research department, and he will assemble a section that will be working hand in hand with your team. Mr Croft, the Head of Space division – despite our lack of major space travel, we have been looking towards developing our technology in that field – will supply a specialist team which will be implemented into the Research department, if this development gets the seal of approval from both governments.”

She once more paused, giving everyone around the table to time to digest her words. “But the most important part of this entire endeavour is to not only achieve the goal on the table, but to establish and grow relations between our nations.”

Turning to each of them, he responded somewhat collectively, "I look forward to working with each of you."

"In the meantime," he continued, now turning to Emma. "Pehaps Her Imperial Majesty would be open to an exchange of Embassy Staff. Its just a suggestion which comes from the top of my head, and I know offhand that Indigo would well approve. We have several locations available within Anatoba City, if it is your wish."

Emma smiled. “I would have to approach Her Majesty concerning such a suggestion, but having worked closely with the Empress Gehenna for several years, I know that she is always willing to consider Embassy exchanges.” Once again the palmtop made an appearance, as Emma made a note to forward the suggestion. “It has been one of Her Majesty’s goals to extend our Embassy program.”

Noticing a particular look on the face of Marcus Davenport, Emma looked at her colleague and addressed him. “You have a question, Marcus?”

The man in question nodded his head, and turned to Claude. “It is more of a project related question. Will the work be carried out in Tartarus, in the Austar Union or a mixture of both?” He looked at the man questioningly, his pen poised ready for the answer. “We will need a little time to find suitable accommodation and ensure that the site is secure. These things take a little time, and we would like everything ready for a quick start.”

Beside him, Sebastian Croft nodded his head in agreement and continued the conversation. “We have facilities. We just need to ensure they are adequate for the task.”

Claude nodded, and responded thoughtfully, "Certainly, it ultimately depends on what you want to do exactly. Im not sure exactly what facilities you have available here in Tartarus, however if you did want to work here then you a free to. Between our two teams, we can liazon over basically a virtual environment if you wish - a sort of computer program established in the Union whereby a physical presense is simulated, and users can log into their respective avatars from across the universe. Otherwise, if you dont particularly want such a program established here, we can organise some form of proper liazon if you wish."

"Anything is possible really," concluded Claude shrugging. "If you want to work here in Tartarus, then we can accommodate for your needs and requirements to do so. If you want to travel and stay in the Union entirely, then again we can accommodate for your needs. And again, forgive me for repeating myself - if you want to work within both locations, then we can organise something. The question is, what is it do you want to do? From there, I can liazon with Lord Blue himself on how to furfill each of the needs to make this project successful."

04-07-2005, 18:42
The three Tartarians around the table listened, each of them working overtime to decide what would work best for them. It was left to Marcus to answer, as his would be the main department involve. “Looking at the options, I think we should cover all possibilities and use sites in both the Austar Union and Tartarus. This would allow us both to work on familiar and unknown territories, putting both on a level footing.”

It was Sebastian’s turn to interject. “Of course, in order for us to get personnel and equipment to the Austar Union, we will have to rely heavily on your ability to get us there. If you feel that this could hamper proceedings, we would be happy to listen to what you have a preference for, be it here or in your own nation.”

Emma nodded and spoke. “Perhaps it would be best if we decide this kind of detail following a little re-reading of the subject matter. As much as it would be good for both nations to have equal use of their resources, we have do look at the big picture and decide which is more viable to the task ahead.”

Claude smiled and nodded at Emma, "Agreed."

"I apoligise for our inability to forward these plans directly," he continued, handing out a set of blueprints to each of the men and woman at the table. "Unfortunately, we had a few minor quirks to sort out here and there - nothing serious. But do know gentlemen, and ladies, that this will be the official blueprint of the project. We have dubbed it the Omega Gate Project, but I guess you can use whatever name suits you best. I suggest you go away and look into the detail of the prints, and note any concerns or changes you would like to voice."

He paused, "We are all partners in this business afterall."

Sitting back down into his chair, he clasped his hands together and sat them gently onto the table. Leaning forward, he went on to give a few vocal notes on the blueprints.

"Note, that the total diametre is approximately half a kilometre wide. This has been decided upon as a safe distance, including some piloting error. Also, you will note that we have included a few defenses onto the main structure itself, just to provide a last-defense against intruders, enemies, and the like. I assure you however, that we have little in the way of enemies. Anyhow, at Point C, you will notice a carefully designed little box formation. Within that box - note Plan Two Point One - will be stationed some limited forces. I suggest that for now at least, they be of Austarian origin. In the meantime, whilst I am guessing that you would be using the gate primarily for civil and diplomatic ventures, I have included a lounge and a few facilities one may avail himself of," he described, with great detail.

Claude sat back and placed his hands onto the table, palms down, "Its all a bit complicated to go through completely. But as you can see, we have included a few facilities including docking ports, a lounge and private areas, defenses, and of course the gate itself. You might need some time to study the plan over yourself."

Emma nodded, and smiled at Claude. “I do believe we need time to review the designs and come up with a strategy that will work for all concerned. But from first impressions, and again I will let the others give their own views, it looks like a perfectly balanced display of work and pleasure, which always works when dealing with the diplomatic corps.” She chuckled lightly at her own joke. “Of course, other than looking at it from the outside in, my knowledge of this kind of thing is very limited.”

She looked over at Marcus, who took up the baton. “I agree with Miss Sarie, the plans look perfect. I will let some of my people look at them and then we can get down to the nitty-gritty part of details and go from there.” He looked briefly at Sebastian who indicated he had nothing to add. “I suggest we call an end to the meeting and get a chance to review the plans more closely.”

“I agree.” Emma turned to Claude, looking at him questioningly. “Is there anything more you wish to add or discuss before we bring the meeting to a close?”

Emma got to her feet first, then the other two Tartarians followed suit, each looking at Claude and Lauren. The two men moved around the table and in turn presented and shook each of their hands, passing a few words between them and the Austarians. Having expressed their delight in the way the meeting had gone, the two men bade farewell and headed out of the room, disappearing down the corridor, their voices wafting back into the room as they discussed how their views on the task ahead.

“I believe we managed to cover everything.” Emma smiled and looked between the two others left in the room. “It is always beneficial to start off well then everything can only go from strength to strength.” She indicated the door. “Shall we?” She waited for their assent and then led them out of the door. “I thought we might get you to your hotel, and get you settled in there, and I will make arrangements for the tour of the palace and anything else you wish to see and do.” She stopped and looked questioningly.

Shaking each of their hands, Claude and Lauren were both equally pleased with the gravity and success of the first meeting. For one thing, they had managed to detail the plan without rambling (as Austarian diplomats were known for). And for another they had managed to convince rather well the Tartarusians, that the blueprints were good and cleverly devised. Still, upon closer observation they may find one or two things they would like to adjust, if not for personal design reasons only. In the meantime, from the perspective of Claude himself, the meeting had gone extremely well. He hoped that the two men (and Emma included) would have a mutual understanding.

"That sounds like a sound plan to me," replied Claude, after shaking the men's hands and observing their leave.

Leading the party out of the meeting room, Emma soon had them back in the now familiar hall, where the portrait of the Empress once more looked down upon them. Someone less cynical might even imaging that she was smiling down on the group, herself happy with the success of the meeting. They were greeted at the man door, by one of the footmen, who pulled open the door at their approach, and stepped back to let them through.

Just as they were about to step through, a young man rushed up and addressed Emma. “Miss Sarie, her Majesty has invited her honoured guests from the Austar Union to reside here during their stay. She has requested two rooms in the guest wing be made available.”

Emma nodded and turned to Claude. “It would appear we will not be needing the car after all.” She nodded to the footman, who pulled the door closed once more as she moved the party back into the hall, and looked at the young man how had arrived and was now indicating the stairs. “Please, lead the way.”

Acknowledging the command, the young man let them up the staircase, and headed right at the fork in the staircase, as it swept back around on itself. As they made their way up to the second floor, the eyes of the Empress followed their progress.

Claude followed Emma, whom was leading the pair of Austarians to the car outside. Although, they didnt quite reach the car - a younger employee of the Imperial Palace rushed out to advise her that they would be staying within the Guest Wing instead, on the order of Empress Gehenna. So kind of the Empress. In the meantime, Claude once again found himself regaining interest in the portrait which hung in the main hall, and the entrance of the great palace. For one thing, he was instantly reminded of a great portrait of Queen Victoria of the fabled country of England. It was a portrait and painting studied by many in the field of arts, and each portion of the piece had been constructed in such a marticulous way. Each piece with a representation unlike the next (yet representing the role of the Queen herself), it provided for some interest for anyone interested in the studies of art history. For example, the Queen's eyes represented her 'all seeing ability', whereby it thus represented her secret service and intelligence directorates.

I wonder..., Claude pondered thoughtfully.

In the meantime, for now all he could do was follow the young boy, as Emma had decided to do also. Afterall, there was exactly much else he could do, unless he wanted to make for negative show. Indigo would kill him, surely.

Emma smiled as she followed the young man up the stairs, as he led them towards their assigned rooms. The second floor was very similar to the ground, the portraits still dominated the walls, and statues and vases filled up nooks along the way. Finally they stopped outside of a door, which the young man opened and stepped back to let the three through and then followed them inside.

The room was more a suite than a room. A central living room area lead off into various doors, behind which were hidden bedrooms and bathrooms. The décor, though not as overpowering as the halls had been, still kept with the traditions of antiques. But it was more liveable than at first its museum look might have given the impression of.

Emma looked around and smiled at the two visitors, as the young man spoke. “Your belongings are being brought over from the hotel, and should be here soon. It was decided that you might prefer to share a suite, but if you would prefer separate accommodation, this can easily be arranged.” He looked at Emma as if waiting for her to continue.

“Thank you. If we need anything we will call.” Emma watched as the young man retreated and turned to the Austarians. “Please, make yourself at home. The button on the wall there, will bring a member of the staff.”

Nodding and thanking Emma, Claude said his goodbyes as she disappeared among the Palace's endless corridors. Closing the door behind her, he had now the time to relax - and breathe. Loosening his tie, he wandered over to one of the many wash basins and splashed water onto his face, wetting it. Lauren wandered to the bedroom and sat down one of the comfortable looking beds, testing its bounce. From the bathroom, Claude could be heard talking to her, in the meantime while he patted his face dry. That, and he admired himself in the mirror. He was a sexy man.

"What do you think," he called, asking. "I think its all going rather well."

Laying down on the bed, Lauren kicked off her shoes, "Actually, I think its going better than expected."

Claude re-entered the room and leaned against the doorway, folding his arms and legs, "Well, they are friendly enough."

"Empress Gehenna seems a kind ruler," replied Lauren, admiring the architectured pattern drawn on the roof. "She makes a good hostess."

Claude smiled, "Mmm. In the meantime, I'm famished. I wonder what they would have to eat."

"I think it would be best to wait Claude," chuckled Lauren. "Emma has only just left."

Marcus Davenport pushed open the door of the office and entered, closely followed by Sebastian Croft. Both men entered and took seats around the table, barely settling before they had the copies of the blueprints spread out over the table in front of them.

Giving them a cursory glance, Marcus got up out of his seat and moved over to a table laden with an arrangement of bottles. He poured himself a scotch and looked over his shoulder at his companion. “Can I get you anything, Croft?” He focused back on the task as the Head of the Space Division requested a glass of the same, and brought them over to the table moments later.

Sebastian took the offered drink and took a sip, as Marcus returned to his seat. “So, what are your initial thoughts on the project? Potentially I see it has a lot of bonus for us, pushing forward our ability to move more freely around, but I do not understand why the Austarians chose us.” He frowned a little. “Like was mentioned at the meeting, we are hardly the most advanced nation around.”

Nodding his head in agreement, Marcus looked equally perplexed. “I can only assume that Lord Blue wishes to improve relations with us and saw this as an easy solution to doing so, while enabling both nations to achieve something else at the end.” He brought his glass to his lips and took a drink, feeling the kick of the alcohol as it slipped down his throat. “Personally, I’m somewhat pleased that they did pick Tartarus to work with. This could help improve our standing with other nations on the back of this.”

“It could also have a detrimental effect if it goes wrong. There are two sides to every coin, after all.” Sebastian could not help feeling a little weary about the project, being as his department would bare a large brunt of the responsibility, and it would be his department that ended up with egg on its face if a space endeavour failed to work. “What about the location the work should be carried out? This is going to be a bit of a stumbling block.”

Marcus frowned as he pondered the idea. “I think we should see which will work best, and if possible we might be able to split the project into both nations, but on the whole, I think this is going to be easy to solve. This project will just be carried out in the best location for what needs to be done.” He rubbed his forehead with his hand, before lowering it to the paperwork before them. “We just have to ensure that we have a facility capable of housing the project should it be decided to have the base of operations here.”

Reclining back in his seat, Sebastian nodded. “We have facilities all over the nation that could easily accommodate this. But I agree, we should wait until we can properly assess what is needed.”

“Most certainly.” Marcus matched his companion’s movements, and made himself more relaxed in his chair. “On the whole, I think the meeting went very well. Hopefully if we can straighten out these odd points, everything should go swimmingly.

He took another sip of his drink, as the two continued to discuss the matters at hand.

Anatoba City, the Absolutionist State of Austar Union

Indigo leaned back against the rear of his chair, reading the short transmission he had recieved from his diplomatic envoys in Tartarus. Within the report, it had detailed such things as the general moods of the meeting, how some were reacting to the proposition in question, et cetera. And with his mind's eye, he highlighted one particular position of which he took particular interest.

... And it appears that for now, the Empress will be interested in an Embassy Exchange. I believe this shows propable reason to think there is a brighter future between our two nations.

Several hours later, following a brief meeting with the Empress, where the meeting had been covered in a little detail, and Gehenna had expressed her interest and delight in what had transpired, Emma Sarie made her way back down familiar corridors and made her way up the winding staircase, and knocked on the door to the room that Claude and Lauren were using during their stay in the Palace.

She had not expected to be gone so long, but while she was, she had been informed that their luggage had been brought from the Imperial Hotel, and was now with the Austarians. She had also arranged to some refreshments to be brought to the room, so that they could partake in a little food and drink, before they had dinner later that evening.

She waited for the door to open, and smiled as it swung open. Having being asked to enter, she stepped over the threshold and gave both guests a greeting, asking them how they were and whether they had everything they needed.

“I am here to take you on a tour, if you are ready and willing, but before we do, I have a few points that Her Majesty has asked me to clarify.” She looked between the two, before focusing on Claude. “Empress Gehenna is keen to begin negotiations on an Embassy exchange, and she wishes to – shall we say – increase the Empire’s usage of this new technology, due to a change in the Empire’s land holdings.”

Lounging around in the room, Claude sat back while flicking through channels on the television, and Lauren lay back on the bed reading a book. There was a distinct knock at the door, and Claude made sure the neaten his appearance before answering and opening the door. At the sign of Emma Sarie, he smiled and listened to her greet. Nodding, he responded in a more relaxed fashion as he would have during the first negotiations.

"Anything may be negotiated Ms. Sarie," he replied. "If the Empress sees fit that she wants to negotiate greater use of our technologies, then I put it to you to make any proposals you find nessasary. I see this as a parnership more than anything, with proper and equal benefit. So if you require anything more than that original deal offers, then by all means, please present what it is you would require."

He winked, "Im sure we can work around anything, really - sort it between ourselves. In the meantime, I'm ready for the tour if you are. Just give me some brief time to get my shoes on."

“I just wanted to give you some warning to the changes in the agreement that we will be addressing at the next meeting.” Emma gave Claude a smile. “It isn’t always good business to drop things into the conversation and leave the other side of the table scrabbling to see whether the new plans fit.” She watched the Austarian as he moved back into the room, seeking out his shoes.

Taking a step forward, Emma remained near the door, it open behind her. She flicked her eyes around the room as she waited. “Mr Hansworth,” she called out loudly enough for him to here. “Will Miss Jent be joining us on the tour?” She suspected that Lauren was not as thrilled to be here as Claude appeared to be.
Austar Union
23-07-2005, 09:35
Unlike Claude, Lauren didnt exactly share the same interest in art - or even the finer things of life for that matter. Lauren was a career woman, no children, no husband to suit. Dedicating her life to her job on the field, nobody really considered her a diplomat on her own, but rather a diplomat's assistant. As such, she normally went wherever her companion went, never speaking a word. She wasnt here to talk afterall, she was here to help Claude. And it wasnt like she didnt like the Empress or any of her subordinates. Nor was it like she disliked Tartarus as a whole. But rather, it was more that she felt better suited to a different sort of culture. Having applied to be on representation to Knootoss in particular, she had been recently turned down and sent here instead. So no, she wasnt all that thrilled. But she at least kept her poker face on in the meantime as diplomats did, and simply enjoyed the company of those around her.

Appearing in the room, she smiled lightly at Emma respectfully, "I think I might sit this one out if you dont mind Ms. Sarie. But thankyou, all the same."

"Claude was certainly looking forward to your tour however," she continued, motioning with her hands. "He'll quite enjoy the art and decore."

Making his way toward Emma, he smiled - blushing just slightly, "Well, I'm ready at least. Lets go."

Shutting the door behind him, he turned to Emma, this time with a more serious, yet sincere facial expression.

"Before we continue Ms Sarie, I just wanted to apoligies if you find Lauren a bit hostile or 'stand-offish'. Between you and I, I find that she tends to over emphasise on her actual job description, rather than choosing to enjoy herself. Afterall, life is about the enjoyment of life itself, wouldnt you agree?" he said, grinning and winking at the woman.

Shrugging his shoulders, he finished up, "Anyhow, them's the apples we get, them's the apples we eat." [1]

[1] Originating from over a century ago, the phrase 'Them's the apples we get, Them's the apples we eat' was developed to descibe a situation whereby one must make the best of the situation he has been given. Usually, it comes in the form of when someone decides that the best course of action is to 'shrug it off', and simply move on in contentment.

Emma turned to Lauren, while they were still in the room with a pleasant smile. “I’m not here to dictate who does what, you are here as a guest, therefore you are free to chose.” She knew that looking around old houses were not everyone’s cup of tea. “If you require anything, the bell pull by the fire will bring someone to you. Of course, the system has been upgraded, and there is not a row of little bells down in the staff quarters, but it keeps with the feel of the palace’s history.”

She turned and followed Claude out of the room, her smile vanishing as he looked at her most seriously. She managed to smile once she realised that the situation was not as grave as his expression made her think. “Mr Hansworth, there is no need for you to explain your companions behaviour or feel that you have to apologise for it.” She smiled. “I have staff under me, who will go out of their way to do anything to keep someone happy and I have others that really could do with putting themselves out more.”

Shaking her head, she chuckled softly. “But you are right. We do have to make do with what we have.”

She led them back to the main staircase that they had walked up earlier, and down into the more than familiar hallway, with the portrait of Empress Gehenna gazing down on them. “As you seem most interested with the historical parts, we’ll wander through the state rooms, which are mostly used for functions and more formal occasions.” She indicated the side of the palace that they has entered to visit Gehenna earlier. “These are also the rooms that have mainly kept their historical features, unlike some of the offices that have been made on the other side of the palace.”

She headed off, taking them once more to the right side of the staircase, and towards a set of double doors that were prominent in the hallway. She pushed open the door, and revealed the first of a series of sitting rooms, this one used mainly as a reception area for visiting dignitaries, as it was neither in the private section of the house, nor the more working orientated side.

“This is the Blue sitting room.” Emma announced and smiled.

As they entered, they were greeted by man. He was in his late fifties with silvery hair, and was dressed in a rather smart black suit, that held the usual cut of a morning suit. He merely smiled as the two entered and waited for Emma to introduce him.

“Mr Hansworth, this is Samuel Granger.” She gave the man a nod before turning to her guest. “He is going to accompany us on our tour of the palace. Any questions you might have should be addressed to him, as he is one of the foremost authorities on the history of the palace. Anything that he is unable to answer is not worth knowing.” She watched Samuel’s smile widen.

Claude followed Emma through the halls of the palace until they both came into the room she liked to call, the Blue Sitting Room. Other than its obvious appearance, Claude wondered why they had chosen to name their rooms after particular colors. Whether it be for convenience, a designer's secret and what not, he still was curious - although common knowledge told him that it was likely due to the decore in the room, hence the very blue colored furnishings. And as his eyes wandered around the room in admiration of its delicate decore, his eyes rested on an older man whom had been waiting for both of them. He smiled, and shook his hand on greeting.

"Its nice to meet you," Claude said, smiling at the man.

Looking around him, he admired the blue furniture, "I couldnt help but notice the great portrait of the Empress in the main hallway out there. I must say, it was stunning to say the least. When exactly had it been painted?"

Samuel smiled at Claude and looked past him into the hall, as if he could see the picture from where he stood, rather than seeing it in his mind. “Ah, yes, the portrait on the stairs, a particularly fine portrayal of Her Majesty.” He flicked his eyes back to Claude’s face, his face beaming as he spoke. “I was commissioned for the Empress’ Gehenna’s coronation. The likeness is very striking, and you feel her presence emanating from the portrait.” He chuckled to himself. “Some times, it even feels like she is watching you.”

He turned his attention to the room they were standing. It was a large room, the walls adorned with fabric wallpaper, mostly white with an intricate pattern of blue flowers that run down the wall in panels. The furniture was antique, with a matching set of couches with velvet upholstery, the same colour as the walls. The floor was wooden, with huge carpets that stretched across the floor without covering it completely.

Around the room were various pieces of antique furniture, a couple of small tables, a sideboard and other cabinets, displaying vases and other ornaments, dating back over the palace’s history. Dominating the room, was a huge fireplace, carved marble. On the mantle, there stood a large clock with matching figurines standing either side. Above which, was a large gold framed mirror which reflected back the many portraits that gazed down from the walls.

“This room is the Blue Sitting Room. It was a particular favourite of Empress Kristaucia, the great-great-grandmother of the present Empress.” He looked about him, gazing at the items that made up the room. “The room is practically as she originally had it in her time. Of course, there have been a few additions over the years, but this is roughly as close to how it was when she used it.” He frowned. “The room has been decreasingly used over the years, due to the proximity to the door of the palace, but it was the fact that the Empress could see who was arriving that made it a favourite of hers.”

Claude looked and examine each peace as it had been described to him, and it struck him with such awe when he learned at how old this room was. And for the fact that Samuel had described it as if it were almost exactly as it had been, he was impressed to say the least. He hadnt known any buildings in the Union for example which were still like that, although there were some parts within the city were they had been heritage protected from being torn down. In fact, he remembered. One of the great estates had been designed so, although the furniture had been moved about in them. Not quite the same.

"This vase," he pointed, turning to Granger. "I see it has been decorated slightly unlike the others. And it has latin written across the base. Is this somehow significant to the Empress, the Imperial Family, or even Tartarus as a whole?"

Samuel walked over to the item indicated by Claude and gaze at it for a moment, as if it were speaking to him. “This particular vase was a wedding gift from the Emperor Asmodeus, who was the Great-great-great-grandfather of the present monarch.”

He walked around the side of the cabinet, his finger pointing to a small, barely visible hairline crack on the side. “On the day of the Earthquake in eighteen forty-eight, the story goes that this vase fell from its original place on a mantle in one of the other rooms, and hit the floor, but did not smash. The Empress believed that her father-in-law saved the item from being destroyed as a sign of his passing from the world. Emperor Asmodeus was killed in the earthquake, crushed when a portion of the palace was destroyed.”

He returned his attention to the decoration on the outside of the vase. “The words and pattern are a blessing from the Emperor to his son and daughter-in-law for a happy and long lasting marriage.” He turned to Claude and smiled. “The vase seemed to have done the job, as the couple were said to be very happy.”

"Amazing," he muttered under his breath.

The detail on each and every piece was amazing. Like Michelangelo had once said, the most important aspects of his pieces were actually in the areas one could not see. For him, it was god his artworks had been intended for. And whilst he could hardly imagine Tartarus as once having a strong religious influence at all, he figured that perhaps some influence had spread from the European type artists. Yet, at the same time it did maintain a sort of different look. Something more british than anything. It reminded him much of Queen Victoria of Old England - hence the portrait in the main hall. Tartarus was almost completely similar, yet different in its own respects.

Claude turned his attention to Samuel, "And what areas of the palace were damaged in that earthquake? I mean, given that at least some areas must have been destroyed, from what I can see the builders of the time must have spent some hell of a time making it perfect."

Samuel watched in silence as Claude looked around the room, he could see that Claude was as impressed with his surroundings, just like he had been the first time he had stepped inside the room. Samuel had always liked history, and the palace, like many stately homes, were living examples of the past.

He turned as Claude spoke. “The palace was very fortunate during the earthquake, with very little structural damage to the oldest part of building. There was minor damage to some of the newer wings, but it was one of the underground chambers that experienced the worst damage, a complete cave in. It was there that the Emperor and one of his servants were killed.” Why they had both been down there was unknown to any but a few, and Samuel was not one of them.

“The repairs on the palace were minimal, and archives report that within a few years the building was back to its original condition, other than the underground chamber. They merely shored up the ceiling and closed the entrance.” He looked at Claude, his eyes watching the man’s face, waiting to see if there were anymore questions.

Shuffling across the floor toward a mantleplace, Claude admired the old photographs which resided on top of its stable surface. Old frames they were, with small, yet random seeming pictures within them. And a variety of candlestick holders were placed across its center, for decoration. It wasnt a dark room afterall, there was a good amount of light coming into the room naturally. In the meantime, he didnt notice Samuel checking to see if he was ready for the next room at all - nevertheless the answer he would be able to see was that indeed, Claude had been ready for just a short-time now. Afterall, although the Blue Sitting Room had its history - alas it did have its limitations. Amazing, still, nobody could ever call it dull.

'I guess they dont do too many tours around these parts,' he thought quietly to himself, allowing the smallest smile to part from his lips.

Samuel nodded his head, as he lead Claude and Emma, who had been silent during the question and answers in the Sitting Room, in to next room through an adjoining door. “The Palace is not open for tours, and I am merely here to answer questions of guests, who like to hear a little of the history of the Ewige Verdammnis Palace.” He grinned. “Mostly I work with restorers and the like to ensure that any work carried out on the palace is done exactly as it would have been done throughout its history.”

The entered the next room, which was slightly smaller than the one they had left. This one was not as obvious in its colour as the Blue Sitting Room, as its décor seemed to be a mix of various colours, adding to a very summer and light feel. Once again, this room was dominated by its fireplace and the portraits that stared down from the walls.

“This is the Empress Kristaucia Morning Room.” Samuel intoned as they had all entered. He pointed to various pieces of furniture as he spoke. “This is where the Empress retired to complete her tasks for the day, like writing her letters at the writing bureau or arranged the menu with the housekeeper.” He moved further towards the middle of the room. “The writing bureau was a gift from her husband, Emperor Malominous to commemorate the birth of their first child, the future Emperor Abaddon.” He pointed to a little etching which had been worked into the pattern. “It gives the date of his birth and underneath a message in Latin thanking his wife and declaring his everlasting love to her.”

Samuel smiled. “If that were not proof of the Emperor’s feelings for his wife, he also had rebuilt the Opera House that had been destroyed in the Earthquake for her, as opera was a favourite of hers.”

Claude listened intently, "It sounds as if he were quite a generous man. I say, does this opera house still stand today - or has it been torn down for various reasons?"

In the meantime, his eyes wafted across the room, taking in every piece, every detail. For the Imperial Family to have such... amazing decore, they must have been the richest within the all of Tartarus. He dare not ask however, since such questions would have been rude. Merely an assumption would do well enough - although how the times did change where today monarchs had fallen to be one of the more passive wealths of a nation. That said, the Imperial Family did still hold a ruling share of the nation - the entire pie one could say. So... whether they still were the most wealthy would be based on one's own self-belief. Claude for one thing, believed it.

Looking around as Claude spoke, Samuel sadly shook his head. “Unfortunately the Opera House was ill-fated. Having been rebuilt following the earthquake of 1848, it was eventually destroyed in a fire. The story is quite a long one, but it was rumoured to have been destroyed by a phantom (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=388823) of some kind.” He let out a low sigh. “The facts of the story have been lost over time, and most of it now has been turned more into legend.”

Emma piped up. “The remains of the Opera House still stand. It had been considered cursed land by the following Emperors, who refused to risk building on the site. But there is talk at the moment of attempting to rebuild an Opera House there. Third time lucky, shall we say?”

The old man nodded. “It is a shame to see the skeletal remains of a once popular building, rotting under the harsh conditions of the elements. Some of its finer features can still be seen amongst the ruins.” He let out another sigh. “How I wish, I could take a peek inside, just to get a feel of the place.” Suddenly he smiled. “But I digress, we were discussing the Palace.”

Claude smiled lightly and continued to look at each of his surroundings. Again, he found himself looking at the ceiling, and this time it had been decorated in a similar pattern, yet different somehow. To actually recognise the difference of course, one would have to compare two photographs of the same - a resource he didnt have, nor did he want to bother to make use of. Within him in the meantime, the warmer summer-based colors actually tended to affect him somewhat. Blue was nice and calming indeed, but this room... was nice. Fuzzy, if you like.

"I wonder... Mr. Granger, I have noticed that the ceiling has some form of decorative art here. Is that standard of the entire palace?" he asked thoughtfully.

31-07-2005, 11:43
Samuel turned his head skyward as Claude mentioned the ceilings, as if he needed to refresh his memory as to exactly how it looked. “Ah, yes, the one place that most people miss when they enter these rooms, although compared to some, these are very ordinary to look at. As we get deeper into the rooms, you will see them become more elaborate.” He lowered his eyes for a moment. “The Ballroom itself has the most stunningly painted ceiling, containing a series of godlike images, that you may consider strange for a nation that does not have religion, but in its history the Empire has not always been without it.”

Samuel pointed to several spots of the ceiling, where little cherub-like faces poked out from behind various flowers and other patterns. “The faces you see are images of the Empress’ children. The one there, near the centre of the room, is the Prince Abaddon, the oldest child and future Emperor.” He frowned as if trying to focus his eyes better. “In his hand he is holding the spectre, which denotes the future wielding of power and just above his head is a crown. The sun in the middle of the room represents Emperor Malominous, and the children are placed getting further from the centre of the room to show their position in the lineage. The latter faces are the images of their daughters.”

'Prince Abaddon, why does that name sound familiar?' he pondered quietly while tapping his lips with the tip of his finger.

Observing the remainder of the room rather relatively simple, this wasnt as intricate as the previous had been. Although it did have a sense of style on its own. Afterall, it hadnt been called the Morning room for only one reason. And the art... it reminded him somewhat of the older version of Italy, with a mix of the Victorian Era. A strange mix, but cleverly blended by the designers within the palace, and the Empress of course. In the meantime, his eyes rested on a more stranger image on the wall. It was different from the rest - a portrait still, but the art which shrouded the figure was... dark at best.

It was of an older women, not any face that appeared royal or even important. She seemed to be somewhat of a gypsie, and she wore a scarlet robe which she wrapped around her so. And shadows seemed to follow her all round. It was dark, mysterious. And in such contrast with the rest of the room.

"Is that painting usually there?" asked Claude, figuring it might have been recently moved for various reasons. "Who is that woman?"
Gehenna Tartarus
06-08-2005, 14:56
Samuel laughed and looked at the portrait. “Yes, it is a rather unusual painting, especially considering its surroundings.” He moved closer to it, looking at it carefully, as if seeing it again for the first time. “She is an opera singer. It was one of her greatest roles. She was a favourite of Prince Abaddon in his youth, but she did not accept his advances. The Prince wanted the painting destroyed, but his mother liked it. When she died, he tried to have the portrait removed but could not bring himself to do so.” He laughed. “The passions of youth.”

He turned towards Claude, and sure that he had asked all that he wanted, they moved into the next room, which was barely different in usage than the previous. They wandered through each room, Claude asking questions and Samuel answering, informing him of the background to items and the reason for the names of each room. When they moved up to the second floor, he gave lists of royalty and other famous people from across the ages that had used a particular room.

Finally finishing the tour of the more semi-private areas of the palace, Samuel looked at Claude and then Emma, who was smiling happily. He made his farewells and walked down the sweeping staircase, to disappear into the lower level of the palace, as her Foreign Minister looked over at their guest.

“I hope you enjoyed your tour.” She indicated the direction back to his room. “Most of the rooms you saw are used mainly for formal functions, or when the Empress is having a house party, when the Palace becomes alive with sound and people. Her Majesty resides in a suite, but that is a strictly private area, as I’m sure I don’t have to tell you.”

She looked at Claude. “There is a car at your disposal should you like to visit the city. Dinner is at eight, in the formal dinning room that you saw on the first floor. You should gather in the Prince’s Sitting Room at seven thirty. If you need any assistant, just ring the bell in your suite and someone will come to you.”

Claude smiled at Emma, pleased more than enough with the tour given, "Thankyou Ms. Sarie. I will be sure to contact you if I need anything."

Unfortunately, there hadnt been all that much time to properly visit the city itself, and Claude was more the man to make it a day-trip more than anything. So thus he followed her instructions and found the room with relative ease. Noting the paintings and portraits on the wall as he had wandered through these corridors earlier, they had become to him a sort of guide, a map if you like. Each marking a particular point throughout the palace - least in his own mind's eye. He had a good memory afterall, and although he hadnt completely recalled the art within this place, the directions and memories were more than a powerful enough team to help him find his way. He knocked.

The door open just slightly, Lauren peeping through the crack, "Oh, its you."

She opened the door further and allowed Claude inside. Closing the door behind him, she folded her arms closed and stood in the room as he unloaded himself.

"So, how was it?" she asked, with a hint of something in her voice.

Claude paused, sensing that something was wrong, "Uh, it was fine. I learned a lot."

"How is everything here?" he asked, taking off his shoes and breathing as he removed each sock.

Lauren stood blank for a moment before the question registered in her mind, "Everythings just fine. Just fine here."

She blushed, having been caught off guard. And in the meantime Claude took the time to observe her strange behaviour as she rushed to busy herself with seemingly nothing at all. Rattling something here and there in the other room, he knew that there was nothing being done. But rather that Lauren seemed concerned, bothered, uncomfortable.

"Are you alright Lauren?" he asked gently. "You seem... shaken somehow."

She reappeared at the doorway to the main room, a little more fast than natrual - a little flushed of course.

"I'm fine Claude," she covered herself well. "I guess when you were gone I just got a little uneasy"

He smiled just a little, being careful not to allow it to turn into a full-burst grin. Remembering back at home, he recalled when his last assistant Jennifer, was leaving, and what she had said after watching the behaviour of Lauren herself.

"I'd keep an eye on that one," she had commented, winking and smiling. "I think she likes you."

Looking over to Lauren he had chuckled, "Bah, she's so focused on her duties. I doubt she has room for me in that busy life of hers."

What he had missed though, was that at the turn of his head away from her, Lauren had stopped what she was doing and began to observe him, watch his delicate movements with a sense of fasination. How vain he had been, till now.

The following morning, once breakfast was well out of the way, Emma Sarie took the familiar route up the suite that Claude and Lauren were using, and tapped heavily on the door, to ensure that she was heard. Mornings were always a bad time for turning up without a set schedule, especially as it was had to tell what some people considered an unearthly hour. But she wanted to make sure that the nation’s guests had the best treatment while they were there, and if that meant a wake up call from the Foreign Minister, that was what they would get.

As she stood at the door, she let herself review the previous day. Thinks had gone very well, and the Empress had expressed her pleasure at the items that had been discussed. They were a long way from producing the end product, but at least they were on the right track, and if nothing else, this whole event would help them build relations that had begun during a trip to Austar Union as part of an evening planned by Lord Indigo Blue. Emma was still surprised that things were coming out of a simple statement from their Ambassador.

She waited at the door, once more focusing on the task at hand, hoping that she was not disturbing the sleep of those inside.

Trained by the (now) privatized School of Business & Political Relations, both Claude and Lauren were actually awake rather early. It had been considered bad manners, or bad practise even - since on several occasions the day might begin early unexpected, or in this scenario where Emma was knocking at the door. That said, it wasnt too early, but at least one could answer the door with his eyes only half open. Lauren had gotten up from what she was doing - not much, considering both were flicking channels on the television, watching the local news. She made her way to the door, and before Emma could be waiting long at all, opened it and smiled.

"Ah, Ms. Sarie," she greeted. "I trust you had an alright sleep?"

She paused, and realised how rude she must have being, "Please, please, come inside."

Holding the door open for her, Emma most probably wouldnt have known that Claude had a few words to Lauren - about her behaviour. She was told to smarten up, become less work focused and more relational focused. And she was told that although she was his new assistant, if she was going to hinder things by relating so cold, he would have to file a report with the D.C. Not surprisingly, it had worked and now in the morning it was much more evident that Lauren was making a strong (yet hidden) effort. Anything for love.

Emma greeted Lauren with a smile, partially surprised to see her at the door. The woman had not been overly genial the previous day, and it took Emma a moment to realise what she was saying. “Good morning.” She looked about her for Claude, to see whether he was in as good state of readiness as his companion. “I slept very well, thank you. How about you? I find sleeping in strange beds a little strange at least for the first night.”

She moved deeper into the room, turning her gaze on the young woman. “I trust that you have had breakfast?” She was a little unsure whether she had instilled in the two guests that they were to use the bells to obtain everything they needed. “If not, we can always arrange something.” Pausing she looked at the clock that sat on the mantel. “I also want to enquire into the plans for today, whether you wish to resume the meeting or take in a little culture. Although I expect Mr Hansworth is tired of playing the tourist.”

On that note Claude entered the room, "Personally, I would think it preferable that we continued the negotiations perhaps."

"Not that I dont enjoy learning about Tartarus," he added, grinning. "I just feel that while I'm here, I guess I might as well tackle the task at hand. Afterall, the rest can be handled via a series of textbooks."

Lauren nodded, agreeing with him, "Breakfast was nice in the meantime."

"We're ready to go or begin whenever you are," she shrugged. "Any time that suits you really."

“Good morning, Mr Hansworth.” Emma smiled as Claude joined them in the room. “Then we will resume the meeting in one hour, which will give me time to make all the arrangements necessary.” She suddenly produced two folders, one for each of them that she gave out as she explained. “This is a revision to our original needs, detailing our extended use of the equipment once it is up and running. As I explained yesterday the Empress Gehenna has acquired some land on Triton, and is now in need of transport to and from there.”

She indicated the document files. “I thought if I gave those to you before we start, you could get up to speed on this new development before we start.” She gave both another warm smile. “Someone will come to escort you to the meeting in an hour. I will see you there.”

* * * * *

An hour later, give or take a few minutes, Claude and Lauren were escorted into the meeting room, where they were greeted by the familiar faces of Emma, Marcus Davenport and Sebastian Croft, who each in their turn said a few words and shook hands with the Austarians.

Once everyone was settled, Emma opened her file, and watched at the two Tartarians did the same. “We left off yesterday to look into the plans, and I believe my two colleagues spent most of yesterday going over the details.” She looked over at them, as they both gave a brief assent to her comments. “And I gave you, Mr Hansworth, and Miss Jent, an update of our requirements, which I believe puts us all in the same position for the beginning of the meeting.”

She turned and focused on Claude. “Do you have any questions concerning The Empire’s change in the agreement?”

Both Lauren and Claude opened their relevant folders to the same page as the Tartarians had, and looked down at the notes they had made on a few yellow tabs here and there. Claude noted a few circled areas he had drawn, and arrows pointing here and there. In the meantime, Lauren had once again taken her vow of silence - she was the more passive party here anyhow. It was Claude's duty to discuss matters such as these, and thus he did.

"I havent noted anything which we cant accomodate for," he replied, still reading over the notes, then looking up at them all. "I guess if the Empress will be using it herself, I would like to make some minor changes to the security arrangements. But nothing particular to really discuss too much."

He glanced over to Lauren, and then back at the Tartarians, "Other than that, the rest we can account for ourselves. I assume by all means, that we will be providing you with all the craft you need? If not, I can arrange for some blueprints to be designed and delivered."

"And there was another matter which I wanted to discuss also," he added. "But that can wait for now."

Emma listened and nodded her head at certain points. “The Empress Gehenna may on occasion have to visit her territory but we are more interested at this point in being able to send the relevant personnel to get things up and running, but this is more a case in point for further along the path. As to craft, we will be looking to you to at least supply us with some. We are not particularly concerned at this point at having custom made vessels.”

As she paused, Sebastian took up the reins of the conversation. “Hopefully future development could be established between our two nations for upgrading craft, but as Miss Sarie’s has pointed out, we are more interested in being able to use it rather than astound our neighbours with our custom designs.” He smiled slightly. “This new acquisition of the Empire’s has made our ability to travel through space more a necessity than it was when we were first approached by Lord Blue.”

Emma nodded. “You could say we’ve been caught on the hop, and are now desperately trying to make amends.” She laughed lightly, before looking at Claude. “If you have something else to discuss we can either cover it now before we go into greater details with the project, or if it is something that I can deal with, we can discuss it at the end.”

Nodding, Claude couldnt agree more, "Well then. I really wanted to discuss the possibilities of allowing other parties to use the gate also."

"More specifically," he continued. "The Union has been considering membership opportunities sometime in the near future, with the Triumvirate of Yut. It is hardly private knowledge, but given that we at least wanted to offer them something worthwhile, I wanted to know your stance on permitting others to make use of the gate."

Sitting back, he watched to gauge each of their reactions, "Our plans are preliminary at best at the moment, but I figured it a likely topic to come up sometime along. I have a suggestion, but I would like to hear your thoughts first."

Emma paused for a moment before answering, as she thought over what Claude had mentioned. “Not being someone who likes to run before they can walk, I believe that it is something that will possibly better addressed once we have the capability to offer it to others.” She once more pondered before she continued. “It is also something that the Empress Gehenna will have to agree upon. Although she is allied to several members of the Triumvirate of Yut, the Empire’s dealings with the other nations are somewhat non-existent.”

She clicked a few buttons on her keypad, making a note to speak about this with Gehenna once she had finished here. “Of course, this does not mean that the suggestion will be refused. But I believe I can safely say that Her Majesty would suggest that this be reviewed once the gate is operational. Of course, Lord Blue would be more than welcome to communicate with Empress Gehenna concerning the idea.”

"Well, be sure to note to the Empress in that case," he replied, making sure to cover his base. "That allowing such a feature isnt particularly nessasary to the development of the gate. So regardless of her answer, we are still more than interested in continuing."

He paused and read further down on his notes, dismissing a few, "As for anything else. I dont have any problems with, and neither does Lauren here."

Beside him, she shook her head to confirm with what he said.

"Oh," he noted, one point catching his eye. "Just one thing I need to clarify for back home, what kind of craft will the Empress be requiring. See, anything she uses will most likely be from one of our older and less updated fleets, if that is alright with her. Given that you have gained for yourselves some extra land, I would assume for one that you would be wanting to defend it from aggressors."

He chuckled, "And we know how many bastards there are out there willing to cause disruption for even just an inch..."

"Will she be requiring a fleet compromising of a few military vehicles - if even just to escort the civillian and government staff?" he asked.

As instructed, Emma made a note detailing Claude’s point, knowing that the Empress would take such a remark favourably. “As to Her Majesty’s requirements, she will be looking many for mainly civilian with a small escort fleet. The area that we have land only requires a small presence, as I believe there is an agreement concerning security.”

Sebastian Croft spoke up. “We understand that anything we buy, other than perhaps in certain circumstances will begin with older models of craft. Once we have established ourselves then we will be looking towards upgrading or perhaps even working towards producing our own – possibly with assistance from others. I believe that we are also working towards commissioning vehicles from Der Angst as part of our land agreement.”

He turned to Emma, who continued. “Presently this has not gone beyond an initial contact phase, so we will be relying heavily on the Austar Union.”

"Then we'll make sure to look after you," he replied, winking. "Cost-wise, dont expect anything majorly expensive in this case. Anything which we supply would have ended up the world auctions anyway."

He continued, making a few notes here and there on his own PDA, "I will have a list updated and sent to the Empress, or either of you if you prefer - of craft, escort vehicles et cetera which are available to you in the next few hours."

"As for the gate in the meantime," he stopped writing and interlocked his hands together. "I have been in confirmation with Lord Indigo Blue, that perhaps a good arrangement would be that much of the manufacturing could be completed here - unfortunately our own industry isnt as developed, so alas to maximize the roles of each of you, I have designed this arrangement."

Sliding a piece of paper to each of them, they began to read lightly - some notes.

Explaining, he went on as they followed along, "As you can see, the constructions stages of the gate have been split between us. Given our own technological advancement, we are able to mass-produce any technology-specific parts in a few factories we have overseas, in other countries. And for anything non-technological specific, - such as hulls, foam mouldings, et cetera et cetera, I figured that Tartarus might be able to contribute in that sort of production."

"Together, we can begin to assemble each of these parts into what I would like to call, sections. And using our own space-launching facilities, we would be able to ship these sections to the Austar Union, whereby we will launch them into the realms of space, and orbit around Earth," he continued.

Breathing, he allowed for any questions before going on, "Now, what I do envision, is that we will assemble the actual gate itself in Orbit, and once it is complete we can begin testing phases et cetera. Once we are satisfied, I imagine it wil engage into geo-stationary orbit somewhere between Tartarus, and the Austar Union."

"Any thoughts?" he asked politely, realising that he had almost been talking non-stop. Such was the explanation of things, afterall.

Marcus Davenport, who had been relatively quiet up to this point, took the lead in the conversation. “GT Technologies is willing to undertake any part of the process that you would like us to. Although we are not as technologically advanced as some other nations, we do have a decent research and manufacturing division and with the blueprints and designs that you supply, we will produce what you require.”

He paused for a moment. “We will would like, if you agree, to have two teams from each nation, who will almost be like a liaison during the production. Naturally, we are not expecting them to be there for the more top secret elements of the design and production, but we feel that it would add a bit of unity to the process, rather than it being totally separate.”

Emma nodded. “Of course, personnel and other little details will be worked out once most of the production plans are worked out.” She looked at Claude. “After all, there is no need to know which people are needed where until we finalise where the production is going to take place.”
Austar Union

"Right," Claude nodded. "Yes, I agree. Do you mean a sort of... joint team to oversee the project, to give the instructions of production and so on, so on?"

"If so, then I more than agree. But for one thing, where might you rather base this team of directors? We can host them in the Union if you want, or I can arrange to have all the nessasary equipment shipped here if you wish. There isnt all that much to ship afterall - Tartarus would have most of things nessasary." he added.

Marcus shook his head slowly, as he rested his arms on the table before him and leant forward. “It wasn’t exactly what I was suggesting, but that could be another good idea. My original idea was for each nation to have a group of people from each nation, working with their counterparts, which would enable a sort of unified bonding.”

He paused, not sure if he was making sense. “We would send a team to the Austar Union to work with you, and you send a team to us.” He looked momentarily at Emma then flicked his eyes between Claude and Lauren. “This would give the feeling that we were truly working together.”

Emma smiled. “Although I admit that having a team as you suggested, Mr Hansworth, would be a good idea. It would allow both nations to oversee what is going on and they would be able to give any necessary input.”

"Ah..." he replied, chuckling. "Im sorry, I didnt quite understand. Yes - Yes, that would actually be quite a good idea you have there."

His face went red just a little before returning to normal, "Well, it would certainly make for some training for certain technicians also. They might be able to learn a thing or two from us, and likewise, we might be able to learn a thing or two from you. An excellent point, I might say."

Writing it down, he pondered for a moment, "Now, for me, I am fine with everything regarding the project and am ready to start whenever."

"Do you have any more ideas before we move onto the next step - costing?" he asked, shrugging his shoulders.

Again Emma took over the proceedings. “We also have no further points to make concerning the production. As to costs, we have anticipated a figure, and can assure you that as long as the amount can be justified without being overly excessive – we all know how these things can blow out of all proportion if things begin to go wrong.” She paused for a moment. “The Empress Gehenna is not a foolish woman, and she knows that space travel does not come cheap. Rest assured that we are able to meet our end.”

As Emma finished, Sebastian continued. “GT Technologies has for a long time had a division focused on improving our space capabilities. We are not anticipating having to build new research or production facilities, our expense will mainly lie in equipping them with the necessary machinery to make our parts, and the actual production itself.” He took a sip of water. “Of course, we are anxious to know what kind of figures you have come up with.”

Claude nodded and slid over a small sheet, with a cost-breakdown detailed on it.

"I do anticipate that this will be an extremely expensive project," he noted. "I wouldnt say that it is unaffordable, just that it will most likely be... one's major project for a long time."

He winked, "Between the Austar Union and Tartarus however, all of the costs are split by half which makes it all the more bearable. In my experience, all of space is this expensive however, and this is only more-so given the sheer scale of the project. We have had accountants pouring over what we have suggested so far, and they have definately given the thumbs up. Its feasable alright."

"Overall," he shrugged. "Its hardly much different to the cost you were already expecting. And if you have any problems in the meantime with equipment et cetera, we'll be more than happy to fit half the bill -- the whole bill if its caused by us."

Emma looked over the document that Claude had presented, her eyes scanning the information. “This all looks perfectly in order, and we are more than satisfied with everything that has been documented.” She looked over at the other Tartarians in the room, and gave them a moment to add anything, but they were perfectly happy to remain silent, as they had nothing more to say.

Returning her attention to Claude and Lauren. “If there is nothing more to add, I think we may as well call this meeting to a close and move on to the next stage of production.” She paused for a moment. “We will begin outfitting our locations, while arranging a group of technicians that will work along side yours. We will keep in contact with you during these preparations, and if anything arises for either of us, we can cover that as it becomes apparent.”

"Good, good," smiled Claude. "One last thing, Lord Indigo Blue has suggested that I become the official liazon to Tartarus during the period of this project."

"Now considering the fact that this project is likely to take time in the excess of... ten years or so -- I might be needing an office of which to base myself from. Is there anywhere that you suggest I establish myself, and in return -- we would like to offer you an office in Anatoba City for your own liazon purposes," he added, grinning.

It seemed that the gate had just moved into the next phase of pre-existance. First, it had been an idea, a consideration of sorts. But now, it had become a plan. The blueprints had been set, and what would exist was almost established in the concrete of reality.

23-08-2005, 22:36
Emma nodded as Claude spoke and then looked towards Marcus. “I believe we can set you up with offices at GT Technologies Head Office, which is in the heart of the city, as well as being the central hub for our part of the development. I think that you will give you the best access to all areas of our work on the gate.” Marcus nodded his head in agreement. “Mr Davenport will make the arrangements with Mr Stone, who I am sure will be more than willing to make sure you are well accommodated.”

She paused for a moment as she watched Marcus made a note. “We can also set you up with living accommodation, I will deal with that personally. Of course, I will need to know specifics as in whether you have family or what other considerations should be taken into consideration.” Her eyes flicked briefly towards Lauren, before settling once more on Claude’s face.

"I shouldnt need much," he replied, grinning. "In fact, I am more than happy to pay for any accomodation."

He relaxed back into his seat, "Afterall -- I might have a family, but I was thinking perhaps if I were to be allowed some form of visa for the time I spend here, and then furthermore I rent out one of your private houses -- perhaps in the suburbs."

"You dont have to look after us too much, Ms. Sarie," he chuckled softley. "Just give me a visa, a place to work, and I can work out the rest."

Emma smiled as she looked at Claude. “We can most certainly do that for you, Mr Hansworth, in fact, it was on my schedule to get permissions for you and your staff to remain in Tartarus for the duration of the process. My original offer was more for the short term, so that you could settle in quickly, without the hassle of having to deal with such isssues, at least until you were installed in the nation. But I am more than willing to comply with your suggestion.”

She paused for a moment. “I’ll send the relevant information to you as soon as it has been processed.” She looked at her companions. “Do you have anything more to add?” She waited long enough for them both to answer, which was given in the negative, before she looked back between their guests. “If we have nothing more to add, I suggest we bring the meeting to a close and move onto the next stage in our plan.”

Claude nodded at Emma, and with the subtle gesture of his hand, told Lauren to begin packing up. Understanding, she nodded herself and began to clean up the papers which lay strewn across the desk -- an organised clutter, mind you.

"We're both very satisfied," replied Claude, who had stood to his feet already.

He grinned and leaned forward to each of them, shaking their respective hands; "Then I believe this meeting, and thus the stage of negotiations to be finished, would you not?" He chuckled. "Its been a pleasure working with you so far, Ladies and Gentlemen."

Lauren finished taking up the papers, and shook each hand politely -- although with a lack of masculinity, naturally.

She smiled and looked to Emma, "Uh, Ms. Sarie, does the Empress have anything planned at all before move to pack? A parting goodbye, perhaps?"

As they all shook each other hands, Emma turned to Lauren and smiled. “The Empress Gehenna has not made any definite plans as she could not foresee when the meeting would come to an end, but I know that she would like to meet both of you before you leave. If you are in no rush to leave, we could continue with her tentative plan for a lunch meeting, but if you are not available for that amount of time, I am sure she might have time in her schedule before then. She did want to see you before you left.”

Her eyes flicked between Lauren and Claude as she spoke. “Mr Davenport and Mr Croft will not be joining us.” The two men gave a brief nod in agreement as she said their names, confirming her words. Marcus and Sebastian took a moment to make their leave as Emma waited on a course of action from Claude.

Claude looked across at Lauren, which was affirmed with a definative nod.

"Certainly," he replied pleasantly. "We are in no rush to leave."

He smiled, "We would be happy to fit in with the Empress' schedule." Chuckling, he added, "I would hardly expect a woman of such worth of respect to run about to fit with mine."

"Besides, lunch would be nice," he laughed, patting his belly.

Emma gave Claude a warm smile, her eyes full of respect at his words. “The Empress Gehenna understands that she is not the only one with schedules to work to, which is why she kept open time for you, especially luncheon.” She flicked her eyes between her two companions. “I’ll escort you back to your suite so that you can freshen up, if necessary, and then we can proceed to dine with her Majesty.” As she finished speaking she led the three of them to the room that had been allocated to the Austarians.

“I shall be back in about thirty minutes, if that is amble time for you?” She asked Claude, as she paused outside their door. “Lunch will be at one, which gives us forty five minutes.” She waited for him to give his agreement, and then walked away, heading off to make arrangements.

* * * * *

Thirty minutes later, Emma rapped her hand against the door to the suite, the luncheon with the Empress finalised and the meal being prepared for their arrival. As the door was opened, she once more made pleasantries with the couple before leading them back down the familiar staircase and towards the room that the Empress was waiting in.

The dining room, thought formal, was not as big as the official dining room that was used for state functions. This room contained a table that could comfortably seat twelve, but was laid out for only four, with the Empress at the head, and each of the Austarians to either side of her with Emma beside Claude. At the far end of the room.

Gehenna was already seated when the door opened, as smile of greeting on her face, as she rose. “Mr Hansworth, Miss Jent. I am pleased that you were able to dine with me. I know that sometimes ones schedule can be a little tight.” She indicated the seats around the table, Emma guiding each to their allotted place. “I understand that the meeting has gone very well, and that we are on track to begin preparations to move us into the first phase.” She lowered herself into her seat, Emma following suit.

Having been left time to freshen up, both Claude and Lauren decided to make such time wisely. They had unfortunately, only been given thirty minutes to prepare for lunch with the Empress; something he wasnt willing to take as "just another appointment". And thus, they both dressed to impress, Lauren in a reddish dress which came to her knees, and was rather body-fitting; Claude in somewhat of a designer tux, from Antonia Exchange but of course. These people might have considered them over-dressed, but this was a foriegner; the Empress of Tartarus no less. Simple respect told them--dress nicely, be respectful. Yet these people were modest; quite modest in fact. But such wouldnt change the attitudes of this lady, and this gentleman. Manners, were manners afterall.

Both took their seats accordingly, following a half-bow of respect; "Not as pleased as we Empress. The honor is all ours."

Claude grinned. "Yes, actually." He nodded calmly. "I think both sides are quite pleased how things are moving along. And now that the hardest parts have been dealt with, I expect that the rest will be just a matter of process."

He half-shrugged, half-smiled, "Production works on the basis that effective plans have been made, no?"

Gehenna nodded her head, a smile fixed on her lips as she flicked her gaze between her two guests as she spoke. “Preparation is the foundation for everything if you want it to last, and I believe that our plans going to be very effective.” She paused for a moment. “Of course, working with new people does cause a little bit of getting used to each other, but I am sure that Lord Blue and myself can ensure a good working relationship, even if we have yet to converse face to face, something that I hope to rectify during the working of this project.”

As she drew to a close, the doors at the end of the room opened, and a line of staff entered carrying trays laden with a variety of foods, from meats, salads and sandwiches to soups and a selection of other midday food, which they began to lay out on a sideboard to one side of the dining room.

“We are having a buffet lunch, I always find they work best at this time of the day. Please help yourself to whatever you like.” She smiled. “If there is something we have missed, please speak to Mr Shepard,” she indicated a man standing at the end of the buffet table. “And he will get it for you.”

Claude grinned. "The service..." he commented beneath his breath; astounded. "You certainly know how to feed a man."

"And woman," added Lauren subtly. She chuckled to herself.

"Aye," he grinned in response. Heading directly for the crab, he almost drooled at its amazing flesh--it looked as if it had been cooked to perfection, just so that the meat was beginning to come from its shell; and given just the right amount of work associated... Beautiful. Lauren in the meantime headed right for the more "staple" meals. Sandwiches, cheese snacks, et cetera. She didnt want to be rude, hence why her plate remained fairly lighter than anything. And completed with a Salad; Sure, she was satisfied enough. Claude however was not as held back. He piled his plate to the brim and was quick to enjoy the meals that had been cooked. Besides, he was hungry.

Swallowing his first bite, he turned to the Empress; "I'll put it to Mr. Blue, to meet with you in person. Afterall, given the (hoped) future of relations..." He shrugged, having made his point. Gesturing to Mr. Shepard with a quick move of the head, he smiled. "I hate to be rude, but there's no way we would be able to eat all this food alone. Perhaps, he might wish to join us?"

Gehenna nodded her head. “If you would be so kind, I would be grateful if you would take a letter requesting a meeting with Lord Blue from me personally.” She looked at Claude as she spoke. “I prefer the personal touch – or as personal as possible under such circumstances.”

Rising from her seat, watched by Emma and both of her security personnel who sat off to one side but were always with her, Gehenna walked over to the buffet and looked down at the food, a smile on her lips as Claude made his request. “The food that we do not eat will not get wasted, and Mr Shepard is currently on duty and would feel uneasy about leaving his post.” She looked over at the member of staff and smiled. “But I am sure that he appreciates the thought.” She turned back to her guests.

Finishing her selection, she returned to her seat, just as another member of staff walked in carrying a tray of drinks, including wine, water and various juices. Picking up her fork, she took a morsel of food and chewed thoughtfully, falling quiet for a moment so that people could get started on their lunch before continuing. “When do you anticipate the next stage to begin, Mr Hansworth? I trust that you will be settled back in Tartarus by then?”

Chew, then swallow. "Hm. I guess you cant count on any official timetable at the moment; I have to talk to Indigo, then my family about the matter." He played with his food with his fork. "I plan to head home, then talk to Lord Blue about the proceedings first. Afterward, we'll discuss a relevant time for me to head over... and I'll have to talk it over with my wife and children."

He pondered for a moment, "I guess a month, maybe two until I come back? We'll just have to cross that bridge when we come to it, really."

He took another piece of lettuce in his mouth, "I appreciate your hospitality, Ms Sarie and Empress Gehenna."

"Quite, you have been more than pleasant," chimed in Lauren at this moment. "We will certainly confer such manner to Lord Blue."

Claude grinned widely, and nodded softly in respect; "Nevertheless, thankyou."

“It has been an honour to have you as my guests, Mr Hansworth, Miss Jenks.” Gehenna smiled as she flicked her attention between the two Austarians. “We would not expect you to rush, and we will look forward to seeing you whenever you return, Mr Hansworth.” She turned her attention to his companion. “And Miss Jenks, will we be seeing you back in Tartarus once the project begins?” Picking up her glass, she took a sip, before lowering it and once more lifting her cutlery to begin eating.

Following the conversation, but having not spoken as of yet, Emma took a mouthful of food and chewed thoughtfully as she listened. Clearing her mouth, she smiled gratefully to Claude and Lauren. “I have enjoyed meeting you, and I hope I get the opportunity to catch up with you once things have started.”

Gehenna nodded her head. “Perhaps when you are settled in, we can dine again.” She paused in her eating and lowered her knife and fork. “Thank you for your time and effort during your visit.”

Lauren pondered thoughtfully at the question, and offer posed to her; "To be completely honest Empress," she replied openly. "I havent a clue. I didnt have it in mind, to be exact--it all depends on what comes out of the meeting between Lord Blue and Mr. Hansworth."

Both listened and reacted appropriately at their given moments. And eating the meal, although delicious, came to an end. Finishing up, each of the parties bid their goodwill before leaving, and Claude took his last sip of wine.

"I hate to be rude," he spoke up. "But we really must get going. Im sure Lord Blue is waiting for us. Oh." He paused and flickered his eyes between Emma and Empress Gehenna herself. "What about that letter you wanted me to take? I can wait around just a bit if need be, otherwise you are free to forward it to my own office direct. I can, then, present it to Lord Blue if you wish."

Gehenna smiled, as she turned to Claude. “The letter will be delivered to your suite before you leave. I would be most grateful if you present it to him for me.” She looked at Emma. “If you could make sure that Mr Hansworth gets it before he leaves.” She waited for Emma’s nod before returning her attention to her guests. “I hope that you both had a pleasant stay in Tartarus, and as I said previously, I look forward to your return, Mr Hansworth.”

She rose from her seat and looked at the two Austarians, as she moved around to where they were seated. She shook each of their hands in farewell. “It has been a pleasure to meet you both.”

Emma rose from her chair and moved over to where the Empress was standing. “Once you are ready, Mr Hansworth, Ms Jent, I will escort you back to your suite and answer any last questions you have before I retrieve Her Majesty’s letter for you to carry back to Lord Blue.”

Claude stood to his feet, as did Lauren just across from him; "Good, thankyou."

Ending the meeting with various traditions and formalities, both of the Austarians found themselves being escorted back through the corridors--this time Claude could remember his way with relative clarity, and found himself not being led, but rather walking alongside Emma as they chatted between themselves, made a variety of last-minute arrangements, et cetera. Soon when they arrived to the door of their suite, Emma left them be to pack and freshen up one last time. They had a (relatively) long journey back home, one which would take somewhat to the amount of ten hours, plus. In the meantime, when Emma was to return perhaps an hour or so later, she brought along with her the sealed letter; handing it to Claude to pack as he ought to.

"Thankyou," he accepted. "As soon as we get to the Union, I will certainly hand-deliver it to Lord Indigo Blue directly." He chuckled. "Trust me on this, he's quite eager to learn any news and developments on what exactly will be happening."

Her Imperial Majesty and I are hoping for a smooth transition from this meeting to the beginning of production, but we are both aware that that is not always the case.”

[ OOC: Here you go... I've left the contents of the letter actually quite open so you can post right after as to its actual wording. Then I'll just post something afterwards detailing the coming months, and then Claude's re-arrival in Tartarus. Hope you like! ]

As soon as all which had to be prepared, was prepared; both Claude and Lauren were well on their way back to Anatoba City once again. Negotiations had been filled, and from what news had already leeked back to the Union, Lord Indigo Blue and his relevant associates were quite pleased with that which had been established. However, there was still plenty of work to be done, and plenty of things which must be organized, prepared, et cetera.

Claude tapped his jacket pocket "It has been a pleasure working beside you," he offered Lauren his hand. "I must say, that I look forward to continuing on this project myself."

"And to you too," she smiled cordially. "I cant say where the Diplomatic Units will place me next, but hopefully somewhere fun, interesting."

He nodded, "As do I."

And so they parted, each going their seperate ways into their homes. Claude on the other hand had already been scheduled to a meeting with Lord Indigo Blue. Quite obviously, he had grown to be eager as to that which had been established between the Federated Autocratic States, and Tartarus. And he would be pleased--the news coming out of said negotiations would have been music to his ears on this fine day. A partnership had been solidified, and later; he was most definite that a prospective future had been born.

In the meantime, as for that letter...

Dear Lord Blue

Following on from the meeting with your representatives, it pleases me to inform you that I am most happy to continue with the proposed plans. Mr Hansworth has been kind enough to explain everything to my own people, and they have reported back to me their findings in this matter, all of which have been most positive.

With this in mind, I am looking forward to the beginning of the next part in the process. Wheels have already been set in motion to prepare suitable sites and .y people are working towards a point where we will be ready for the return of Mr Hansworth with further detail.

I would be grateful if you would allow a liaison from The Empire of Tartarus to be stationed within your nation. This will ease the sharing of information and ensure that both parties are fully informed of everything that is taking place.

It is also my hope that before this process is completed, you and I have the opportunity to meet in person to put the final official seal on this endeavour.

Yours sincerely

~ Gehenna

Her Imperial Majesty, Empress Gehenna of Tartarus

Emma returned to her office, having seen the departure of Claude and Lauren, and began to work on the official request for papers for the man and his family’s arrival. She was pleased in the way things had progressed, having been a little apprehensive about the scale of the project ahead. The Empire had not strived too far into space, doing nothing more that the usual basics. But with the acquisition of land on Triton, it had become important to have some way to get personnel back and forth, without having to rely on the neighbours.
