The Mirfakan Council approved the Universal Public Safety Act today by a wide margin, 372-91. The UPSA represents Mirfak's first major expansion of public services since its initial legislation fifty years ago. The plan extends police and rescue services offplanet, and provides for the launch of emergency services in space as early as 3000.
Besides taking the burden of domestic public service off the military, UPSA reforms the military itself, transferring ownership of all vessels to the government. Military vessels were previously owned by the Alphin to take advantage of a loophole in the Treaty of Jin Rin. The Mirfakan government has hinted that Thanic designs will be used for the first generation of public service spacecraft.
