Hi,

I've been thinking of starting a sports RP like many on the forums, but I'm not too sure how to accurately model a sport using formulas and such. Can someone give me a few tips?

There will be people much more qualified to answer this than me, but anyway: being handy with a spreadsheet (Excel for instance) will certainly help.
An often used scorinator (as those things are called) for football tournaments on NS is Leagion (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/Leagion) (link to wiki entry). I believe it's modifiable for hockey scores as well.

There are a few NS sports tournaments running about now. Ask the organisers what they use for their tournaments.
