Sentient Mushrooms land on Mars

Sentient Mushrooms
10-05-2005, 00:33
A small fleet of ships stretching several hundred meters long came out of hyperspace near the red planet. It had only been a few dozen years since the entire Mushroom system was destroyed when their three suns exploded at the same time, and since then they had wandered the galaxy in search of a new home.

The day had finally come when the entire Mushroom race could be able to settle and start anew, and spirits ran high on board the Shroom flagship. The ships were armed only with shielding to protect against space debris, and they had no offensive weapons of any kind- for their race did not know what the words 'violence', 'war', and 'hate' were. Sire, we have arrived! We are scanning the surface of the planet now, and it looks like the planet known to those in the Sol system as Mars is heavily populated. The Mushroom King was a large being, standing several meters stall. The Mushroom people did not have vocal cords or anything of the sort, but instead they communicated through telepathy. Very good, send down our spore to prepare our new home.

The King was pleased, and ordered that a message be sent out over open air waves to let their new neighbors know of their arrival. Minutes later several small driod pods were released from the flagship, and almost instantly they began to broadcast the message from the Mushroom people that was translated into every language native to Mars.

-../..:...|\.\.///..._.-_---...+...::.|+/
...-..---__\\\/...+.....--_-.
++--..._-_---//\/\.._...--.+

{Translation: Greetings from the Dominion of Sentient Mushrooms! We have come here in search of a new home, and we look forward to cooperating with you all. }

Several hours later three large 'cannons' extended from he port side of the massive flagship and took aim at the surface. The cannons powered up and simultaniously fired a dazzling blue ball of Mushroom spore at their selected destination. The flaming hot spore shot down towards the surface below and slammed into the rock with great force, causing the earth to quake as the spore cut a large tunnel towards an underground cave.

A few more hours passed, and several small capsules were then loaded into the 'cannons' and fired towards the hole in the surface of Mars. The capsules decended gracefully towards the ground, and the Mushroom people inside glanced out through the windows happily at their new home. The spore had not taken long to transform the entire area into a dank and lush mushroom paradise, and those that were shot down into the cave moved from off of the transport capsules and began bringing with them supplies and other equipment.

Throughout the day the ships above continued to shoot the Mushroom people down to the cave, several thousand at a time. Their peaceful message of arrival was broadcast nonstop throughout the drops, and within the span of a few days most of the Mushroom populace would then be in their new home. Several Mushroom representatives prepared to greet their new neighbors should they attempt to make contact.

Mars

The orbit was crowded, as usual, debris from the recent battle against the 'nids still floating around, occasionaly vaporised by the multinational warships positioned there to take care of the local risk.

Elsewhere, tiny drones, satellites floated around, the fairly extensive networks of Mars' various inhabitants crowding the orbit even further.

And a few of them ('A few' being translated as somewhere between 'High triple- to low quadrupledigits') belonged to Daedalia Angst. Combat Drones, Surveillance Drones, Reconnaissance Drones, the likes.

And so they watched.

Well, watched, and given their Angstian origin, chatted about it.

<ORD 12/15> Hrm. I do wonder just how they managed to translate this into, errr... The dozen or so languages spoken here. Especially ours. Last I checked, it isn't particularly easy to learn.
<ORD 45/01> *Shrugs*I guess they prepared. Or they are incredibly smart. Whatev- Eh?
<ORD 33/04> They could have the courtesy of waiting until, errr... Bombing? Landing? I'm not quite certain...
<ORD 45/01> Both. But yes. Generally speaking, they could at least attempt to build up some relations before dropping into the EDZ or wherever they're landing. I think it belongs to the EDZ. Not that I would mind the EDZ being violated...
<ORD 12/15> Everyone violates the EDZ. It's a planetary sport, with the Aumanii being the current world champions.
<All> *Chuckle*
<ORD 12/15> Anyway. I guess Helen got he initial datafeed?
<ORD 45/01> Naturally. Will take a few minutes until she manages to get a reaction out of Huan Yue, though.
<ORD 33/04> Pft. Semi-organics and their need for sleep. To think that they are considering us to be the semi-sentient ones...
<All> Heh.

It would take time to produce a reply, especially given that Daedalia was mildly unwilling to risk doing something that would piss off the rest of Mars. After all, they weren't exactly a regional superpower. Or power. Or average. Or below average.

Well, 'Below Average' was actually kinda correct, it was just that they were way below average.

Still, eventually, a reply was produced.

"We are... Intrigued by your presence, as well as your decision-making process, choosing such a, well, comparatively violent world as your new home.

"Of course we're glad that you seem to be of a comparatively non-violent kind, but we're curious, by your designation as well as by your whole, well, process of colonisation, which, I will admit, is a fairly odd one.

"As such, and given the distinct shortness of your initial message, we would be... Delighted to learn more. About you, that is."

Sincerely,

Kinda non-committing, neutral, saying, well, nothing. Nothing important, anyway, apart from expressing a mild amount of curiosity.

But at the very least the mushrooms were noticed. It was a start.

ooc: You might be interested in the Mars Forums (http://s4.invisionfree.com/The_Planet_Mars/index.php?act=idx), assuming that you recognise this particular Mars (The region being The Planet Mars (http://www.nationstates.net/cgi-bin/index.cgi/target=display_region/region=The_Planet_Mars)), which I assume you intend to do, given your reference to Mars' considerable population. Oh, and for geographic purposes, there is also an (Outdated, but better than nothing) Map of Mars (http://www.sunsetrpg.com/mapofmars.html). It isn't as occupied as it seems, as the Eniqcir territories marked '7' are mere development zones, and pretty much everybody is ignoring Eniqcirs claim to them, also, Kelshan doesn't actually exist (Premature addition to the map), so there are some free territories.

One note, though. Mars' kinda paranoid (It's regularily invaded by Tyranids, Dark Gods, Out-of-Sol civilisations etc.), s starting the landing process immediately was somewhat premature, as one would expect the inhabitants to sort of demand some clearer explanations as of your origin and intends before they're letting you land. Admittedly, not me, but the likes of Auman...

Your Majesty, we have received our welcome! The Mushrooms on board the flagship cheered upon hearing the news, and the Mushroom King was quite pleased. Very good, prepare to send out transmission number two. Loop it several times until we are sure they have received it. Also, keep this transmission on open airwaves and in all known native languages.

From: The Dominion of Sentient Mushrooms
To: The Semi-Sovereign Entity of Daedalia Angst; Residents of the planet known as 'Mars'.

We are most excited to be welcomed to the planet known to you as 'Mars'. We have much to share with all our new neighbors, and we cannot wait to invite you all to our new home. While our method of colonization may seem strange to you, it is the only way we can survive without special suits. We need a gaseous atmosphere in order to live, so we send out our spore first to essentially terraform the area first.

We can assure you that our spore is not toxic to both sentients and non sentients. However we advise everyone to keep their distance when it is fired, for it is extremely hot, and can also be corrosive and explosive.

We are pleased to be welcomed to the planet, but we do not understand what you mean by...'non-violent'. We assume that we are the opposite of this word, 'violent'? We apologize, no such word exists in our vocabulary. Perhaps you can enlighten us?

We look forward to any future conversations we may have. Thank you.

With the message away, the Mushrooms still in orbit prepared to send down their last wave of supplies before setting out to explore other planets in case Mars turned out to be a not so pleasant home.

OOC: Thanks for the info, but I doubt very many will pay attention to this thread anyways. I decided to just go ahead and RP the landing regardless, and if any Mars residents have beef with it they can act accordingly I suppose.

I also think it will be interesting to throw pacifict creatures into a semi-hostile environment. We'll see.

OCC:Kinda hate it when a new nation (nothing personel) just jumps on to the most crouded planet in the Sol system (not counting Earth since it seems to never stop growing) Ah well needed something to do with my UAC Mars base
IC:
UAC-Mars Orbital Watch Center
"So then that moron starts shouting out he is a major in the PNI, and all this time everyone is edgeing away from him untill finaly a amoured MP walks up behind him and pistol whips him," one of the watch men said to his fellow works as they started to laugh at the yarn being spun. Though it was all broken up with the sudden appearence of one of the bases AI right in the middle of the group.

"While you morons have been busy jabbering away about some PNI major who had a mental breakdown I've been busy tracking a unknown vessel that suposedly has sent a message of peace AND has begun to bombard the surface several killometers away from us with a unknown set of objects," The AI nearly shouted at the workers who bore looks of embasment as well as fear for their jobs. "I've already dispatched a fighter wing to examine the ship and if required shoot it down."

UAC-Mars Launch Silo D
Unlike most launch silos the D section was designed to launch VBR-4 fighters that the military had loaned the company. As the five silos opened only second later five fighters roared out into the upper atmosphere and began to locate and scan the unknown ship's activities.

Daedalia Angst

Huan Yue chuckled, mildly, as she read through the second message.Odd people, that. Well, I guess they will be... 'Amused' by what I will send them.

Of course, she was still fairly surprised by the whole process. Insta-terraforming struck her as 'odd', but she decided that it was probably some sort of different process with comparable, though limited, results.

Finishing the process of collecting the data she needed to explain the term 'violent', she did eventually compose the message.

"Oh, I will make certain to have someone attend once you send out your invites.

"As for your colonisation method, well, yes, understandable, although some people may occasionally mistake such with an orbital bombardement. Well, cultural difference, I guess.

"Also, I would be careful. We welcome you, sort of, but we're most definitely not speaking for anyone else. So... I would suggest being patient, rather than being overenthusiastic.

"As for violence, well... I will attach a definition from the encyclopedia, as well as some more explicit explanations, they should be sufficient to explain the term 'violence', although your sensors should be capable of noticing the current 'violence' in southern Quaalchoura, anyway."

Sincerely,

~ Huan Yue, Formal Council Leader of the Semi-Sovereign Entity of Daedalia Angst

Mars Orbit

Angstians tended to be equally curious and rude, and as such, Ares II, one of the two stations Daedalia Angst had orbiting Mars, didn't hesitate for long, quickly checking on the Mushrooms, if only for curiosity value.

Oddly enough, the low-level electromagnetic 'bubble' that represented (Well, was) what made Angstians (And their technology) telepathic didn't receive a reply, or even so much as a presence.

The (New) core sighed. Must really be mushrooms. No nervous system. Bah. I guess the biologists will run their doors in to learn more about them. I just hope they aren't too easily offended. So embarrassing!

In geosynchronous high orbit of mars, Tradestation Freeport 3 was bustling with activity, with ships from many places meeting to trade imperial goods that had recently begun flowing from Planet Arcadia.

"Sir, i'm detecting... strange ships-they're firing spores at the planet!"

"Any toxins of any kind?"

"Negative - Scans show they are harmless."

"Sir-message comming through."

"On speakers."

Greetings from the Dominion of Sentient Mushrooms! We have come here in search of a new home, and we look forward to cooperating with you all.

"Heh... new trade possibilities."

"Shall I send the standard greeting?"

"No... send this message instead."

Greetings to you newcommers, we are the Imperial trade station Freeport 3, of The Imperial Navy. Welcome to Mars. if you are seeking supplies or anything that may be of use to you, please, feel free to dock with this station and take a look around. We hope you enjoy your stay.

"Done sir."

"Good. Now we sit and wait for a reply. In the meantime, take a stock check of Blue Liquoa. We seem to be running low due to high demand..."
