The Death of Emperor Matthias
Budo, Capital of The Empire of The Iron Fish.
Monday 2nd May 2004
1200 Hours.
Emperor Matthias lies on a soft bed in the middle of a huge, elegant bedroom in the Imperial Palace, which lies at the heart of Budo.
He takes a long intake of breath. But he struggles to do so.
For so long Emperor Matthias has been ruler of The Iron Fish. 45 years now. Though since his father died and left the throne to him there had not been much imperialistic about The Iron Fish.
Matthias had ruled his people compassionately. Generally giving them freedoms that they had never known under his father.
But he was now getting on. And as he takes his final breaths he asks for his son to be brought before him.
An aide rushes off and returns quickly with Matthias the Second.
“My only son.”
“Father?”
“In moments you will finally take your seat in my throne, your rightful place. But I must ask but one thing of you…”
“Anything, father.”
“Lead the people as I have led them. Always show mercy. Never oppress them. They should always be allowed certain freedoms…”
“Father…”
“Do you promise me?”
“I…”
“Promise me, Matthias.”
“Father…you know…”
But then Emperor Matthias took his last breath and died.
The end of an era…
Then his son weeps by his bedside. His father is gone. But there is not much time for grief. He has an Empire to lead.
But he is upset. He could never promise his father to lead the people in the same way he did. Matthias was a pupil of Emperor Benson IV’s teachings. His grandfather always believed that the people had no place wanting freedom. The people are there to be ruled, not lead.
Then his father’s former aide steps forward.
“Emperor Matthias is dead. Long live Emperor Matthias II.”
