...But I feel that cartography is not yet a real option. On the flip side, we do finally have someone working on a definitive history for how our fair land came to liberate itself from barbarism. Here is a quick summary, get back to me and know if you think any of it needs changing.
“For many years, the Basement had no governing bodies at all, and most of its inhabitants either roamed the land pillaging or lived in communities large enough to effectively defend themselves but small enough to not become a major target. The nomadic raiders are called the Sahlook. With the sudden advent of modern technology in certain areas, communication between the little fortresses was revolutionized and they were able to mount a counter offensive and drive the bandits out of a few areas. These areas slowly became the first nations of the Basement, the first of these being Fattistan. Most nations of the Basement are slowly expanding as they reclaim territory from the still barbaric wastelands, absorbing outlying communities as they do so. The Sahlook have experienced a technological upgrade too, mainly by stealing weapons from the new nations, but so far they have proved little resistance against organized assault.
The core nations of the Basement operate almost as one, despite their varying styles of government. People who don't like the way one functions go to a different one, and between them most people can find one which they consider tolerable. Fattistan holds that every man should be allowed to do whatever he wants so long as it harms no one else, though in its currently shaky state of security this ideal is not yet realized. The Colony of His Lurking Lordship is heavily influenced by those who introduced technology to the Basement and as such seems to be developing into an intellectual utopia. The Nomadic People of Noveria are a tribe of semi-cooperative Sahlook smart enough to realize that they'll get more plunder by fighting with the new order than against it. The Fiefdom of Foongtonia is currently a true democracy with a beloved figurehead and a taste for the zany. Finally, Fattbourg is a puppet state of Fattistan used as a prison by any Basement state who wishes it.”
