Pondering an Association, of Sorts

Austar Union

Late One Night
Anatoba City, Austar Union

Subject to the bending of light through his reading glasses, Indigo could clearly understand the history of association and the formation of alliances. On the larger oakwooden table rested his elbows as he flicked the page to the next; he was reading just a small portion of the chapters of the world behind him. From the first colonisation of the American continent to the formation of alliances such as the Order of the Seraphim, there had always been problems within them. Usually they had derived from tiny disagreements over personal actions, mostly militarily related. Such disagreements had led to infighting, and such infighting had led to the dissolution of such alliances. UnAPS, or the United Alliance of Progressive States for long had suffered a dissolution after the conflict with the United States of Allanea; again a military problem. It seemed that through-out history if one thing was constant it was the fact that a conflict of arms led to not just the troubles it caused directly, but also to the effects thereafter. Accusations would fly, leading to an arguement or two, leading to bitter relations within a supposedly united alliance, leading to fighting, and therefore destruction of the organisation.

"Fighting benefits nobody," muttered Indigo under his breath as he read on. "Military branches were created for one's self defense, not campaigns against your supposed enemies."

'That,' he pondered afterward, pausing. 'Or alliances gathered under the guise of mutual and corporate defense were never created to succeed. Most of them had tried and failed, and those who succeeded were usually in the process of success before failure.'

Indigo paused to rub his tiring eyes. They had been growing heavy ever since the third chapter, and already he was onto the fifth. Besides, it was rather late considering the time; Indigo had an early start tommorow. Yes, most probably it was time for him to lay down and rest for just a few hours so that he may be refreshed. And so he stood up closing the great book onto its mark, the tassle hanging gingerly from the top. Outside of the study windows the moonlight shone through the leaves of his garden, providing just a small supplement to the already dimmer light which kept the room from darkness. With a creak Indigo walked further toward the door. He had been meaning to replace these boards for a while, ever since the great storm just six months before. The wind and rain were so hard that water had sunk into the structure of the boards, particularly in the study and library areas. Weakened by moisture, they were most likely a hazard more than anything. Yes, they would be replaced within the coming week. In the meantime, Indigo paused for just a moment. A noise, from back in the study. He turned around to face his aggressor and found the room empty, and he smiled at his own stupidy when he saw his only companion. Feline by nature, she looked up at him with glistening eyes and purred as she rubbed against his legs. Shaking his head, Indigo picked up his old friend, and took her to bed. Tonight they would sleep well as the darkness of outside set into the old yet wealthy house.

Early the Next Morning
Anatoba City, Austar Union

RING RING, RING RING, RING RING!

An arm flailed from the bedsheets signalling that there was indeed life within the bedroom. The hand picked up the telephone, handcrafted so perfectly with shades of pearl and jaded emerald. It could have in fact been complemented by real stones, for it was public knowledge that the golden rims detailing the edges were made of real gold and silver. In the meantime, the reciever was put to an ear whereby Indigo croaked out some kind of response.

"Hello?" he answered half-asleep, yet aware. "How can I help you?"

It was a woman's voice which answered on the line, "Good Morning Lord Blue. This is your personal wakeup call service."

He paused for just a moment before the recognition came to his mind. Indigo was indeed quite asleep right now. But not so tired that he was unaware of the world around him. Had he been made known to something simlilar as the Knootian VERITAS Atlantic Alert, he would awaken almost immediatly, and would be in the office within a timespan of just a few minutes. Living so close to Central Command certainly had its benefits, one of those being an active working lifestyle wherby he could command the nation at any point. Should an emergency arise of somesort, he could turn the study into a command point, whereby it was recognised as a place for Indigo to give orders under special circumstances only. This wasnt even a circumstance.

"Ah yes. Thankyou ma'am," he responded politely before hanging up his line.

Within an hour or two Indigo would be in his office showered and ready for a day at the helm, at the bridge of this nation. Under his rulingship the people had prospered greatly, and although some political freedoms had been removed (such as voting), they had been given greater civil and economic freedoms in return, as a kind of reward for their allegance to his regime. So rare were the times he had to wear the heavy hand of anger against anyone at all, to use systems which dictators had been labeled and generalised against. Nova Starfighter for one, had immediately assumed that Indigo's regime was one less competent than that of the democratic. Only a fool would make such a comment as to suggest a change in government, especially to the forefather Indigo himself. Still, he could only blame those who gave dictatorship a bad name.

In the meantime, as he sat quietly reading his daily text, Indigo remembered the night previous and what he had been reading. He had actually a dream of something similar, a dream of some kind of association, whereby it would be focused on the loose organisation of similar minded states, gathered for the purposes of both economic and political mutual benefit. He had assumed it had been derived from the text he had been reading and his own thoughts on alliances around the globe. He could still agree that military cooporation was a great thing, yet not suitable for corporate gatherings. No, if he was to ever bring his dream into existance, he would certainly leave the military factors out of it. Besides, what world needed yet another force to push their own wants and needs around? Not this one.

Indigo paused. What if his dream could become somewhat of a reality? What if there were people out there interested in not just a more peaceful world, but one which was more focused on the cooporation of states on both economic and political terms? For example, to make the association beneficial to one's economy mutually, it would mean an increase of active trade between MemberStates. And those resources which would have to be looked for on the outside would be simply bargained by the association as a corporate voice. It would give not just more bargaining power even but to also to serve as a common fund whereby the states could invest into non-members who are respected or in particular strife. And to make the association politically beneficial also it could simply act as a combined voice, whereby its members being similar in point of view, could contribute to the overall voice of the associate. Yes, memberstates could ask for diplomatic support behind their own causes gaining the heavy support of the associate; a heavywieght on the political and diplomatic agenda. And if there was ever a time to mediate, it would be for such a group as this.

There was certainly an idea in this, and Indigo was growing quickly to be excited. There was much possibility and opportunity, too much to be passed up. So many states like the Austar Union were in existance who were looking for something a little different from the standard military alliance, and something a little different from KIST also. That economic treaty was indeed something closer to the idea which Indigo had in mind, however the problem with KIST was the fact that anyone could join its ranks. Knootoss for example, was a nation less respected than before, and anyone affilliated with KIST therefore was automatically assumed to be linked with their own unilateral actions. Such a great opportunity there had actually been missed and besides, with the extra addition such as the mutual political aspect, this would also serve to be something greater. Indigo was growing to appreciate alternative ideas than to the standard world of battle, conquest, and victory. Why couldnt just everyone get along?

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Greetings, friends of the Union. I will make this message rather short and to the point, due to time factors and limitations, however I would like to extend an invitation to you all to meet in Anatoba City regarding a particular idea which has come to me. Please, you will find the details of the said idea as an attachment to this message, and if you are interested even in the slightest then you are certainly welcome to RSVP. Places at the meeting are however limited, so I cannot assure you a seat there. In the meantime, please do ask any questions you have about the association I have in mind and I will answer them promptly.

Exalted Lord Indigo Blue,

The people of the Empire of Nukka are eager to extend the Empire's ideals onto the world stage. As their leader however, I have realized that as a fledgling unproven nation, that the best way to do this would be in order to join alliances and groups such as the one you may have proposed. Although I believe you have deliberately kept the details of such an alliance secret, the offer intrigues me. Please send an envoy with more details. A response from your a more powerful nation such as your own would greatly please my ruling council. That is all.

In deference,
Lord Nukka
