A Brief History of Everything

I've decided it would be cool to have an encapsulated history of NationStates -- a summary of the major events that have taken place in the game so far. Here I'm thinking more in-game stuff than RP -- invasions, power struggles in major regions, that kind of thing -- but RP events of major significance could be mentioned, too.

Just 100 - 300 words on each would be about right. If you'd like to contribute, post a submission in this thread. Then I'll organize them all into a sticky!

Veldtland is a land of contradictions. One moment you are driving through a respectable neighborhood, the next you have the windows up as you navigate a crowded slum. Here is a brief history of Veldtland:

Far in the beginning, Veldtland was a disorganized group of warring South African tribes. The tribes could never get along, until the Umbakaweni tribe dominated the others to create a full and organized society. This ruling style lasted for several centuries, until Europe began to expand.

The first European nation to make contact with the Umbakaweni was the nation of Bretonnica (another of my nations). Bretonnica was busily expanding down the east coast of Africa, and came upon this land. The Umbakaweni were incorporated into Bretonnican East Africa, and were subject to the will of the Crown. On the western side, Reikhland (yet another nation) established many settlements. The Reikhlanders named the territory New Prussia and both sides of the line became famous for the rich farmland ("Veldt" in Reikhish) and superior natural supply of diamonds. Bretonnica passed a code allowing New Prussian farmers and miners to operate on the Bretonnican side of the boundary in 1875. Farmers and miners flooded over the border, relieving overcrowding pressure in several New Prussian cities. The migrating workers enlisted the native population, and subjected them to years of humiliation. Bretonnica and Reikhland decided that they did not like each other anymore, and instead of forcing Europe into another war, Bretonnican soldiers began arresting New Prussian workers and attacking and seizing mines and plantations. New Prussian militiamen began to fight back and, in 1902, the Frontier War began. It ended three years later with New Prussian forces retreating in shame. Some years of suspicion and arguments followed, until the whole of the Earth fell into a massive conflict.

In 1917, Reikhland invaded The Balkans and western Russia, along with Coronne. Bombing raids began against Bretonnica, and soon Bretonnica sent troops to deal with Reikhland. The war ended in about three years, but it sparked revolutions and border wars all around the world. Bretonnica and Reikhland were again at war, and this time the conflict was not limited to Europe. Bretonnican East Africa and New Prussia, commanded by their respective Home Governments, took up weapons and commenced to senselessly maim and slaughter each other. Umbakaweni on both sides took up arms against brethren on the other side of the border. The Great Nationstates War officially started. By the end of the War, both sides were horribly in debt. Both sides began to sap their respective colonies. NP and BEA were being pulled in. Reikhland and Bretonnica began to demand higher quotas of diamonds and agricultural goods. In New Prussia, unions of factory workers united and created the Red Star Gang, more commonly called the Red Hessians. They dedicated themselves to improving the life of the working man. They called strikes when something was deemed 'unfair' in the workplace. Eventually, inflation in New Prussia stabilized, in part because of the Red Hessians. On the Bretonnican side of the border, Umbakaweni led race riots and protests against their White masters. Within the year, Bretonnica named the southern area of Bretonnican East Africa the Dominion of Kawia, and withdrew all forces and government figures. The Umbakaweni elected a new leader, and peace was restored. In New Prussia, the Red Hessians became increasingly militant. They used terrorist attacks on New Prussian leaders and guerilla warfare against military and industrial complexes. There was even rumored to be a Red Hessian underground stronghold in the Darpada Range in northern NP. On June 15th, 1967, the dam broke. The Red Hessians invaded the city of Maarten, the capitol of New Prussia. The territorial Chancellor was executed, and the region fell under the control of the Hessians. The Kaiser in Reikhland did not like this, and sent troops to amend the issue.

Within days, Reikhland forces had reclaimed Maarten and the Hessians had fled into the mountains. Afterwards, Red Hessian attacks on rail lines and military bases lasted several years and crippled the Reikhlanders. The Hessians rallied support in the general population and launched a civilian assault on the port city of Darbun, taking it in a few hours of city fighting. The Reikhland forces no longer held New Prussia's largest port. Using railways, Red Hessian rebels smuggled themselves into Maarten. Weeks of fighting in the city resulted in the Hessian forces pushing to victory. The Reikhland government signed the New Prussian Declaration of Indepence on August 6th, 1967. On that date, the state of the Republic of the Veld was created. White leaders forced themselves into positions in the government. RoV invaded Kawia and had taken over in a year. Race riots and strikes of native workers plagued the country until the Karrov Reformation of the 1990's.

In 1991, Hiller Karrov, a New Prussian by birth, was elected into the position of Prime Minister. He instantly began to repeal the race-laws and at the same time brutally put down any attempt at public dissent. His government reforms overhauled the entire system and ended up with his ousting, along with several of his advisors and most of the all-white Parliament. In 1992, Lotho Savuka became the first Black leader of the newly-created South African Republic of Veldtland. Veldtland is now one the leading world producers of Diamonds in the world. That is the end of my history of Veldtland.
