Update from the Holy Vatican See

Holy Vatican See
22-04-2005, 04:55
It has been a very difficult year for us. Those who remember the little group of players who used the "Holy Vatican See" nation here on Nation States may be saddened to know that in February, we lost one of our dear brothers.

Terry had a wonderful sense of humor, fun, and joy. He was responsible for 'recruiting' two others to create the "Holy Vatican See" in an attempt to provide Nation States with a "Church" analog that accurately reflected our experience of the real-world Church and how it might respond in the fantasy situations imagined on Nation States. His great enthusiasm and considerable writing skills were exercised and engaged by involvement in Nation States; he loved the imagination and creativity it provoked. And the friends and acquaintances here (you know who you are) that made us all so welcome were warmly remembered in his prayers and in his last illness.

Our 'collective' includes Americans, Irish, South African, and Canadian-Italian players. Most of us are scholars, teachers, or social workers; the common thread that brought us together is knowledge of the Catholic Church and interest in both international affairs and writing. Some of us have more formal connections with the Church, others have not. Terry was an Irishman and a member of a religious Order who had come to America many years ago, and he worked and shared a house with two other members of the 'HVS collective.' He was a deeply devout Catholic who worked hard to reconcile his own progressive views and adventurous spirituality with the more orthodox demands of his work and life in the Church.

Last year, some of you may remember, Terry suffered what was then believed to be a mild heart attack. In fact, the attack was a secondary symptom of an undiagnosed cancer that had already affected his spleen and circulatory system. By the time the diagnosis was finally made, the prognosis was poor but he always believed he would have as much time as he needed to accomplish 'whatever I'm here for,' as he put it. He had, indeed, achieved much in his life, and touched thousands of young people and their families over the years as teacher, coach, and spiritual advisor.

Nation States and his friends here were often in Terry's thoughts even as his health deteriorated. He admonished us many times 'not to abandon NS,' but to 'go back and stay in touch.' Although all of our members have been overwhelmed with Terry's illness and/or other professional and personal matters in the last many months, we've continued to maintain the collective's e-mail account and attempted to keep the Nation alive here on NS. There hasn't been the time (or the spirit) for more, but as that changes we hope that some of us will be able to resume some activity on NS.

We apologize for not briefing you sooner and keeping in touch during this time; some of you would certainly have wanted to communicate best wishes and support, we know. Time has been a great challenge; some of us have had to curtail a number of personal and professional responsibilities. The powers of the collective are much diminished and will remain so for some time. But you are in our thoughts and prayers often, and the See will (we hope) find some time over the approaching summer to join in a storyline or two.

With affection,

OOC: Unfortunately, I havent had the privilage of knowing either Terry, or the rest of the players of Holy Vatican See. But from what you have described him as, he was truly a great man of God. Myself, I am not catholic but christian; I am touched by his faithfullness in Christ. Most probably, I would consider NationStates to be one of my less important aspects of my life, and yet I am touched to see someone so devout and faithful to the people around him that as a Christian I am inspired by his very spirit. Rest on Terry, know that the world loves you in so many ways, and know that even though I never knew you myself, I am inspired by the way you conducted through your own faithfullness in Christ. Our world has lost a powerful and gentle spirit, but Heaven has gained something truly beautiful. Let God smile upon you...

Whatever one's faith, it's always sad to lose someone. I feel for you in the loss of someone who was evidently very important to your group.

The Holy Vatican See was a very good example to a lot of us, jaded into thinking of religion in terms of opression and xenophobia; heck, you got the Reich to split with Rome!

I think a lot of us would be very happy to see you back, but whatever you do, I wish you the best of luck in it.

I'm very sorry to hear of your (I'd like to say 'our') loss. You have all been greatly missed during your absence, and I do hope that you do return, although I fully understand the reasoning behind your quietness. I heard about Terry's heart attack; after that, he seemed to get better but then disappeared suddenly. I and the other people back on IRC were understandably worried, but we didn't want to pry too much. He will certainly be missed, and he truly was a blessing to the NationStates community while he was here.

I wish I knew him better so I could say things more appropriate to him as a person, but unfortunately all I really know is the roleplay. The HVS collective was a true example of Excellence in All We Do; everything you guys did was always so detailed, well-researched, and perfectly reasonable... a long, long ways from the absolutely silly "Catholic churches" we had to deal with in the past. Believable characters, believable and knowledgable organization... and, to be honest, you forced me to hit the books once or twice.

Good luck to you in all your endeavours; I hope you do return soon but wish that whatever decisions you make, they lead to your contentment.

I'm very sad to hear about Terry's death, and I offer you all my sincere condolences. Roleplaying with all of you has always been not only fun, but also an educational experience, and I think that NationStates, and indeed everyone else in the wider world in Terry's life, will sorely miss somebody who could not only teach you something, but get you to enjoy yourself as you learned. Best wishes and God bless.

Unfortunately, I wasn't around for most of your work on NS. Still, from day one I heard nothing but praise for the role which you played. I'm sorry I never had the privilege of knowing Terry. My deepest condolences.

Times like this, there's really nothing that can be said; nothing that can put how one feels into text.

At times, the NS community mirrors relationships you can feel with a favorite radio or TV host. You know a little about them, they know less about you, but you still feel like their are a close friend, or even a member of the family.

I don't really know what to say, other than my deepest condolences are with you for your (and as Scolo said, our) loss. While I look forward to your presence on these forums and IRC, I understand your situation.

As said above, best of luck whatever your choice is.

I would like to offer my condolences concerning the death of this great man. He will be sorely missed by many, and it sounds as if he did a great service.

The roleplay of HVS has always been impeccable, and amazingly accurate. I learned much about Catholocism through reading posts by the HVS. It truly enriched Nationstates, and added significantly to this corner of the Internet

My deepest condolences on the loss of Terry. I greatly enjoyed role-playing with the members of HVS, but more than that I appreciated and continue to appreciate your authentic Christian witness. May God bless and comfort you and may our Lord welcome Terry into His everlasting Kingdom.

There's little more that can be added. Like others, i'm more deeply sorry than i can say to hear of Terry's death. He, and the rest of you who made up HVS, touched the game with grace and with joy. Those here who were lucky enough to RP with you are, without exception, better for the experience.

My condolences to you. Though I never had the opportunity to know Terry, I am always sorry to hear when our community loses one of its members.

That is quite simply the best reason I have ever heard ANYONE give for a sabatical in the history of NationStates.

Are you sure you don't want to take more time off? I know how horrible it is to lose a friend, and you shouldn't rush things.

As a reverend, I can say he sounds like he was an excellent person from what you say of him, and he most certainly is with God right now. He has been released from the earthly suffering the cancer inflicted on him and is now spending an eternity of bliss in heaven.

Besides, it's not like you won't see him again. ;)

I'll say a prayer for you both. God bless.

My deepest condolences go out to the players of HVS, and to Terry's family.

Never have such a group of people made such a great impression on the Nationstates community, and it is very saddening to hear such grave news as this.

From what I, and other members of the community have seen the HVS collective have made perhaps the greatest contribution to the community since the advent of roleplaying on this site, a title they deserve well.

The collective has given us an actual representation of the church and shown us some of its most intricate mechanisms, many of us were ignorant in how the upper echelons of the Catholic church worked, the collective brought us knowledge, and an actual entity that represents the Catholic Faith on Nationstates.

My point is, that the loss of one of its members is a tragedy that the members of this community should mourn, as they have given us so much, and contributed greatly and made this forum a better and more diverse place.

Again my condolences.

My condoleances to you folks, to Terry's family and relatives. I do remember talking to some of you on the various aspects of the organisation of the Catholic church and some other issues, such as the relations between Catholics and Eastern Orthodox, so maybe I did, after all, get a privilege to exchange a couple words with him.

I do not have anything else to add. I shall just put a candle for his soul's peaceful rest when I go to church this weekend.

~Mikhail

P.S. Well, hope you folks do return to around here some day. Otherwise, the Vigvar Patriarchate will have no worthy 'latinists' to argue with ;)

While I have not been blessed with knowing Terry or HVS better, and while I am not a Chiristian, I will say this:

Zichrono le-Bracha.
May his memory be blessed.
