Thinking about leaving NS...

... and no, you don't get a poll this time. :P

Well, after spending some time writing this post (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=8648933&postcount=67), I'm thinking of leaving for the main reason I've been here for so long.

Role-playing.

Yep, that's right, I'm thinking of leaving because of RP.

Not because of any particular RP, but because, for me, writing fiction seems to take a long time. I can write an essay pretty well, I spend more time than I probably should doing "research" for my country, and yet when I to write a "good RP" post, my mind oges blank, I get stuck ,adn I find myself unable to express myself adequately. When I finally get the product done, it seems sub-par, at least when compared to the rest of you all. Compare the previously linked post - heck, even my sole post in the Chicanery thread (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=7080792&postcount=152)- with, oh, this post by Nathi (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=358706&page=4&pp=40), or, oh, this post by Excalbia (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=7676591&postcount=1), and you'll see what I mean.

I dunno, sometimes I just think I don't have what it takes to be an good RPer.

Or maybe I'm just too hard on myself.

What do you think?

Why dont you take a break from role playing for a bit.
See how you feel, just check in for the daily issues.

I dont know you or anything, and I dont think I've read any of your RP post's, so I dont know how good of an RP'er you are, but all I can say is that you'll probably get better the more you do.

This is my two cents about it:

This should not feel like a job, nor an obligation that you have to get out of the way. Sometimes, I dont feel like writing a full length RP, sometimes I feel creative and write a superb one...the point is, I do as I see fit. There are no rules. You aren't trying to impress someone. It all comes down to one thing: Are you having fun? This is what it is all about, having fun. So if you want to write 1 line RPs from now and have fun doing it, then by all means, go ahead. If you want to take your time with the RPs and write one every so often, then that is what you should do. And if you feel like you dont enjoy Nationstates, then simply stop being involved. I have read your posts, I would most surely enjoy an opportunity to RP with as I think you are very good. Take it at your pace, do it the way that is enjoyable to you, have fun with it. Thats all.

As a very old hand in role playing I can give this advice:

1) It's supposed to be fun. If you're not having fun, you're doing something wrong.
2) The best way to get "better" is to practice, and have someone who can tell you to your face "you suck" critique your work occasionally.
3) When in doubt, see rule #1.

After 2 previous nations that I also eventually gave up on because I got sucked into major RPing, what I've learned is that there are various levels of RPing, that you don't always have to go into the greatest detail. Like, I've discovered that in NS, I'm most comfortable doing epistolary RP: roleplaying in the form of press conferences, letters, newscasts, memos, and other similar things. Like you, when I write narrative RPs for too long, it becomes more work than it's worth.

I would try playing around with different styles and levels of detail before you call it quits, if your problem is solely with RPing.

You're too hard on yourself. Used to happen to me, too, and then Roania went along and told me she liked my RPing. And now that doesn't happen to me. After all, they're replying with more RPing, correct? They're not telling you that your RP is crap.

Which it isn't, in my opinion. But regardless.

When I first started I was terrible. Though I've improved, there are a lot of writters out there that are better then me.

It has been my experience that the only why to get better is to practice. Granted that there are those out there that simply have a way with words. I try really hard not to compare myself to them but to learn from them.

My advice is to stick with it.

That is a valid point I've been working on an RP for months now, and only have a few post, but I am happy with the posts that I have made.

A vacation can do a lot of good. Go off and relax, catch some sun/snow/hailstones (delete as appropriate), and watch some quality TV programming (or Channel Four).

The Forums will still be here when you get back.

I say do what you think is best.

no point in asking us since we're only words. It's your decision and stuff. Meaningless post +1!

You're being too hard on yourself. I suggest that you should just do your best and don't compare yourself to other RPers. All that matters is that you get your point across to the readers.

Useful tip (which I use to write my essays for class): Use adjectives...Big words that make your writing sound "intelligent, creative, and picturesque."

Key: Microsoft Word and its Thesaurus feature...heheheh

I consider myself one of the crappier "big nation" RPers in NS. I hate my writing. My posts are generally empty and hollow in my mind. Most people probably think that as well, but I keep going.
I did get bored/sick of the RPing, so I took a 2 month break "for good." But I came back and I'm happier than before, if not a better RPer.
I'd suggest taking a short break.

If you want to keep on, then here's what I do. I come up with some random event I want to happen, and I decide how it'll happen, then I just try to write it down and see what happens. I figure that its a game, so whoopdy doo if it flops, ya know.

And I've also found that the big adjectives do work to spice up the RP.

Good luck w/ whatever you decide. Hope to see you back though. :D

Man, you are one NationStates-leaving kinda guy. I thought I'd seen this one recently, so I looked over your thread history. 45 threads you've started on these forums, and eleven of them are about you leaving. Eleven.

Five of them are about you leaving the game for good, including this one. Here are the rest:

http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=384293

Six of them are about you being gone for the weekend, as if it really matters whether you miss posting for a few hours or days. I don't recall seeing anyone else doing this on a regular basis.

My two cents? You wanna leave, leave. This melodramatic crap every month or two gets old.

11, for goodness sake Sysk, it gets boring now.

You can find other ways to get a little ego stroking.

And there's only really one critisism I have, its some of the characters that I have seen, they seem far to "high and mighty" or in my perspective, a tad arrogent. I don't really see many scared Syskeyians either, Saint Peter's Island for instance, I would be praying to God pratically every minute, my fellow citizens would be scared shitless of Communists who have a God and Endless Crime's Cherubs, well, less said about them the better.

Despite all of you "research" your people are about as deep as soapbubbles, you need a sprinkling of real human emotion to balance it out, perhaps some custom that makes them entertaining to write about and querky.

I have the massive British understatement in my Midlonians, aswell as various other eccentric traits that I threw in, some from my own life aswell as life around me in general, I'm pratically the Britain of NS, because I chose it, because I found it fun and intresting to RP. Find someway to make your characters and society really entertaining to write about, right now I cannot really see a culture apart from latin-speaking church goers with one set of messed up military tacticions.

Build the society, and it becomes alot more fun, focus on a particular sterotype and build on it, you soon get alot of fun out of writing it.

You know, you don’t know me, most likely never even heard of me, but that’s ok, because I can say the same thing about you, friend J

Though, what I wanted to say was, after doing some research into your writing I found, and this is just my humble opinion, that, you aren’t anywhere near as bad as you seem to think you are. RPing isn’t able to be measured on a scale, where I can say “Johnny, you get a 6, but Susie gets a 10, and Jack, you suck, you got a 1”

You’re writings may seem “sub-par” to you, simply because you’re doing one of the following

1) Being over analytical, yes, people do that. I’m remaindered of the oft used phrase “You are you own worst critic.” No truer statement could be applied to ones writing. I’ve been writing for several years now, and I still feel I suck, most likely always will. The day you start believing you Gods gift to fiction…well, that’s the day you need to leave NS, today, when you’re feeling just like everyone else feels about their writing, is the time to buck up, and keep writing. Another turn of phrase comes to mind. “Nothing is perfect, everything needs improvement. My writing does, your favorite author does, and so does yours, and everyone here on NS has room for improvement too. Improving our writing is, sometimes, the fun part.

2) Remember style? Don’t forget that you don’t write like everyone else. If you’re writing was just like my writing, and my writing was just like someone else’s writing…. that’d be pretty craptastic, huh?

3) I think, maybe, and, once again, I’m guilty as charge here, you’re worrying about what others think. I figure, I’m writing here because I want to participate in this form of creative outlet, share my ideas with a community, and maybe, if I’m lucky get an “adda boy.” out of it. Forget what everyone else thinks, you’re writing to express yourself, not please the NS community. They don’t like what your writing, screw em, they can go read something else. What matters is, that you truly enjoy writing what you do. Accomplish that, and your set

I don’t mean to preach, and I do not want it to seem like I think I know all the answers, honestly, I don’t, not even closer, and I never ever will. All I wanted to get across is some of the thoughts given to me by some friends when I considered quitting NS long ago, and when I would criticize my own writing, and was told to “stuff it, you don’t suck, this is good.” So, I leave you with those same words

“Stuff it, you don’t suck, you’re writings are good, keep at it”

:)

My friendly two cents, hopefuly, everyone can take something out of this.
