Pre-World Cup 22 Baptism of Fire Cup in Vilita and Legalese
Rosters, RP and Scores Thread

The Baptism of Fire is a pre-World Cup tournament for debutant teams to send their World Cup squad to their first warm-up competition to gain vital experience (and crucial KPB-ranking points). For instance, the BoF17 runner-up, Aquiliana, jumped from rank 200 (new nation status) to rank 69, and made it to the Quarter-Finals of the 17th World Cup, this is both a huge leap and a nigh-on unbelievable performance, just shows you what RPing can produce. Consider, also, that a nation that played in the BoF without RP'ing merely went from 200 up to 183, and finished last in their World Cup Qualifying group. The BoF is not just a chance for New Clubs to get a start on their careers in the NS World Cup, but also new hosts. Three of the past Four Baptism of Fire Co-Hosts have gone on to win the election to host the World Cup Finals following hosting the BoF, will Legalese be the next?

Unlike the proper World Cup, RP bonus is extremely important in the BoF, as all teams start off equal. This means that if one nation has a better RP bonus than another, they have a better chance of winning. Roleplaying your matches gives you a better chance of winning your matches. RP Bonus will be the only seperator in the pack. We hope that the non-participating nations will be weeded out or at least noted prior to the start of the World Cup, as we like to feel special by you RPing in our tournaments, so we give you bonues to help you win.

There will be two sections in the competition, The Legalese Section and the Vilita Section. Each team will play one match against the other teams in their group, followed by Quarter- and Semi-Finals within their own Section. The Champions of the Legalese Section and the Vilita Section will meet at the Tivali Ring Stadium in Alikki-Corra, Vilita for the BoF Final.

Randy Gamman was feeling overwhelmed. The outspoken manager of the Nedalia Lions kept going over the sheets. There was still the friendly with Hypocria to celebrate the beginning of the Nedalia Premier League, and he still didn't have his squad together. Oh sure, he had an idea, but he wasn't going to pull what he did at the U21 World Cup. Then, he had shown up with 22 players he had never seen play a professional match before and led them all the way to the finals, playing some exhilirating football along the way. The centerpiece of that team, 17 year old Nene, was also going to be with him in the senior squad, but this was a whole new ball game. This was professionals, this was the best of the best.

Baptism of Fire...he wondered where they came up with that name. Regardless, this will be good for the team, he thought. This will allow the team to come together before the World Cup qualifiers. He would actually be able to see his players play. What a novel concept! Players who have actually played a professional game!

It wasn't easy. Sure, he had his say in everything. Sure, there was that rebuttal battle against South Osettia's U21 coach Zajdel, and there was the constant mouth running against nearly every other coach in the U21 World Cup, but he had his doubts. Big doubts. He didnt even have a team, for God's sake! How did they expect him to do this? And to make matter worse, Nedalians were expecting another magical run from him. Nedalians and they're patriotic pride...

Zanzabarland watches no more, Snakes prepare for entry into World Cup

After watching its brother nation of Fmjphoenix play in the last four World Cups, the government of Zanzabarland decided to create the Football Association of Zanzabarland and enter a team into the World Cup. It has already been decided that the team name is the Snakes. While the FAZ is still really new, they have already gotten players together whom are possibly going to make the team. Going through the ZFL and even recieving permission to draft players that are of Zanzabarlandian playing in the Fmjphoenix Football League. The CEO of the Football Association of Zanzabarland was decided today as former coach of the Vanguard Eagles Kraden Stanford. Him along with various members of the Senate of Zanzabarland has filled the positions required in the ZAF. Now all that is left is the selection of the coach and players. It took a lot of deliberation, but the Stanford has brought up the coach of the Kulat FC, the team that won the previous ZFL championship, Dallas Hickman. Here was his first statements as coach of the Zanzabarland Snakes.

"I am delighted at the chance to be the coach for the team that will represent Zanzabarland in the world cup. I have already gotten to coach some of the best players in Zanzabarland. I have a couple of players in mind already that I want to bring onto the team, and I am have a few scheduled interviews with potential players. It is my hope to bring out team into glory. Our first stop will be in the Baptism of Fire. We do not have much information on the other teams that are entering yet, but we are prepared to find out what we must to get as much of an edge that we can. I cannot wait to report to the world what our team is going to look like."

It is expected that Hickman will have his coaching staff and squad filled out within the next two weeks. There will be a formal conference and party for the revealing of the 22 players that will be selected to represent Zanzabarland.

Bettia
06-04-2005, 09:42
The Football Association of Bettia (FAB) has announced the squad for the forthcoming Baptism of Fire cup.

Colours:
Home Kit:
Yellow & Green Quarters, Yellow Shorts, Green Socks.
Change Kit:
Blue & White Quarters, White Shorts, Blue Socks.

Manager:
Ian 'Blackbeard' Atkins - age 47.
Has managed Bettia's national team since the nation's inception. Acquired his nickname after losing an eye in a bizarre training ground incident 25 years ago. Prefers to utilise a more attack-minded 4-4-2 formation, he has on occasions used the rarely seen 4-2-4 against what he regards as weaker opposition.

Squad:
Goalkeepers:

1. Amir Bettison (captain) - Gabalfa Rovers, age 32, 36 caps.
One of the few to have played for the team since the nation's formation. Considered by many pundits to be something of a talisman.

2. Ricardo DiTorino - Endunn Town, age 19, 4 caps.
A bright prospect renowned for his cat-like agility, DiTorino has made a name for himself since making his team debut at the age of 15.

3. Robert Sole - Lorshill United, age 22, 0 caps.
An ever-present in Lorshill's cup winning team of 2001 but has yet to make his international debut. His 6'4" frame allows him to easily deal with high crosses and set pieces.

Defence:

4. Michael Ryder - Gabalfa City, age 27, 20 caps.
A tough tackler, Ryder has played for the national team since the beginning, but has recently been hampered by a recurring knee injury.

5. Musa Williams - Gabalfa Rovers, age 27, 17 caps.
Has made the left-back position his own since deputising for the injured Michael Ryder. Captain of the 2004 champions and current league leaders Gabalfa Rovers.

6. Wasim Morgan - Ceffinton Town, age 23, 15 caps.
A versatile utility man who can play on the right or left of defence.

7. Geraint Carew - AFC Rendrew, age 26, 21 caps.
A speedy right-sided defender noted for his ability to set up swift counter-attacks. Can also play on the left wing.

8. Said Ismail - Butetown Dragons, age 31, 33 caps.
Vastly experienced defender who has recently returned to his hometown club after plying his trade abroad.

9. Marty Rahl - AFC Rendrew, age 28, 13 caps.
A tenacious player with undoubted defensive capabilities, but whose temperament has occasionally been called into question.

10. Jonathon McKinnon - Ceffinton Town, age 20, 2 caps.
Former captain of the Bettia Under-21 squad, his performances earned him his first call-up to the senior squad just in time for this tournament. A bright prospect for the future.

11. Amir Bin Da'ud - Gabalfa Rovers, age 28, 17 caps.
A solid, dependable defender famed for his long throw-ins. His speed however lets him down.

12. Gareth Coates - Grappenhall United, age 25, 10 caps, 1 goal.
A towering physical presence in the centre of defence, his height comes in handy in attacking set-pieces as well as defensive.

Midfield:

13. John Connick - Aust Rangers, age 29, 22 caps.
Has come into his own as the playmaker of the team, his natural position is deep in central midfield from which he sets up his forwards.

14. Roman Pullman - Roath Albion, age 28, 13 caps.
An unspectacular but solid, influential figure in the centre of midfield. Probably would have won more caps than he already has if it wasn't for his infamous bust-up with the manager at his former club resulting in a one-year suspension.

15. Aaron Brown - Whitchurch United, age 22, 15 caps, 1 goal.
A quick little player who has proven to be adept at floating in long crosses from the right-hand side.

16. Jason Abdullah - Butetown Dragons, age 19, 6 caps.
Very pacy young left-sided midfielder known for his hot-headed disposition.

17. Omar Whistler - Maindy Wanderers, age 24, 14 caps, 10 goals.
A stylish midfielder known for his efficient style and deft touches. He is also proving to be a cool-headed penalty-taker, something which the Bettian national team has been sorely lacking.

18. Evan Brooks - Gabalfa Rovers, age 27, 29 caps, 10 goals.
The 'Golden Boy' of Bettian football, Brooks is well-known for his prowess from set-pieces and stinging long-range shots.

19. Ieaun Swain - Grappenhall United, age 22, 4 caps, 1 goal.
Self-styled 'country boy' who has recently emerged into the Bettian top flight after leaving his local Fourth Division team.

Forwards:

20. Stuart Abdul-Rahim - Gabalfa Rovers, age 33, 34 caps, 26 goals.
Bettia's long-time target-man and record goalscorer. An unrivalled poacher in the Bettian First Division.

21. Chris Hutton - Whitchurch United, age 18, 3 caps, 1 goal.
A precocious young talent who has burst onto the domestic scene. Famed (or feared) for his tenacious hassling of opposition defenders.

22. Bobbie Rosenstiehl - Downton, age 23, 1 cap, 2 goals.
A somewhat controversial selection for the national squad, he only qualified because his maternal grandmother was born one mile inside Bettia's borders. He soon silenced his right-wing critics by scoring a brace on his debut in last month's friendly against Unklestan.

23. John Harding - Endunn Town, age 28, 15 caps, 11 goals.
A lanky centre-forward whose early career has been hampered by injuries, but has recently seen his prospects improve after gaining promotion with Endunn. A deadly header of the ball.

24. Gethin Ward - Gabalfa Rovers, age 29, 17 caps, 13 goals.
Forms the feared strike partnership with Stuart Abdul-Rahim which has performed so well both club and country. However, he has recently experienced a dip in form which has seen him lose his first team place in the national squad.

25. Judson York - AFC Rendrew, age 25, 5 caps, 14 goals
The first black player to pull on the green-and-yellow shirt. His lightning-quick pace is virtually unmatched in the Bettian league. Is equally at home in the centre or on either side of the pitch.

Probable first-choice lineup:

1. Bettison

7. Carew 8. Ismail 12. Coates 5. Williams

13. Connick 17. Whistler
18. Brooks 16. Abdullah

20. Abdul-Rahim 23. Harding

Word has just been received of the team to be taken to Legalese and Vilitia for their first international competition. These players are all fresh, with only domestic experience, and in a case or two some U21 experience.

They will be coached by Lex Farm, retired for 3 years, the 67 year old has gladly opted back for the prestigious job.

The squad is as follows:

Goalkeepers:
Earl Brians - 33 - Earlsford Rangers - As the rock hiding behind a solid defence in the Earlsford squad for many years, he has helped keep them as the top team in FLP. It is hoped he shall perform just as well at international level.
Casper Johnson - 18 - Backstaffen United.
Ernest Hornblower - 21 - Denton Rangers.

Right Backs:
Terry Wight - 32 - Backstaffen United - This aging wonder has held back the opposing attack for Backstaffen for 13 years now, and shows no signs of slowing.

Jack Goth - 20 - Backstaffen United.

Left Backs:
Todd Crumb - 21 - Holy tooth Rovers - Captain of his team he has had the misfortune of playing his early career in League II, but there are rumours of a big move to a top club next year.
Roger Cape - 27 - Scyth.

Centre Backs:
Fred Munst - 27 - Earlsford Rangers - A strong centre back who has shown impressive form of late.
Paul Staff - 30 - Backstaffen United - Born and raised in the poorer area of Backstaffen, the player has phenomenal dedication to club and country. Despite his now ludicrously high paypacket. - Team Captain
Dominic Left - 22 - Earlsford Rangers.
Steve Stevens - 20 - Glentombs City.

Right Wingers:
Tony Doop - 29 - Backstaffen United - A big name summer signing for United. Hopefully he is worth the millions they shelled out for him.

Greg Donnelly - 20 - Skeltower United.

Left Wingers:
Harold Stark - 20 - Backstaffen United - Impressing for the league runners-up over the past year, and a brief but impressive presence in the U21 World cup made this young man an obvious choice for the team.
Reg Cash - 24 - Lyton.

Centres:
David Apple - 21 - Earlsford Rangers - Absent from the previous years U21 tournament due to an injury but has since shown incredible presence in League I.
Martin Simon 19 - Lyton - League I strugglers Lyton have been relying heavily on this young player and his creativity to keep them in the top flight.
Jason Langley - 28 - Talestown.
Jonathon Shanks - 24 - Denton Rangers.

Forwards:
Larry Dome - 25 - Earlsford Rangers - A great attacking player who has found consistant form since being brought through the Earlsford youth system.
Michael Staff - 23 - Backstaffen United - Backstaffen Uniteds most prized player. He scores often, and in style.
Martin Fuller - 18 - Backstaffen united.

Gamman was up late, watching the Jeruselem Government News Nedalia Premier League highlight show. His mind was at ease now that he had named the 22 men he was going to take to the BoF tournament. As his mind was drifting to sleep, the phone call started ringing. He picked up.

"Yes?" asked Gamman.

"Randy, its Nader (Nader Homsi, Nedalia Minister of Sport). You aren't sleeping are you?"

"Yes, actually, I wa...."

"Terrific. How is the team shaping up?"

"Not bad. They seem to be gelling together well. There is quite a few former U21 players as you know, and its a joy working with them again." said Gamman.

"Indeed. You know we have high hopes for you and the Lions. What about the style...how do these kids play?"

"Very Nedalian. Defense needs work, ofcourse, but they are untouchable when it comes to ball skills. And Nene, geez, the kid just gets better and better."

"What about our international boy?"

"Who, Innit Point? The move to Starblaydia seemed to have helped him alot. He doesn't make those silly mistakes he used to. Really has helped him. But then again, the Nedalia Premier League has already began showing its benefits as well."

"Excellent. Alright, I guess I'll let you go. Good Luck, I will keep in touch."

"Great. Goodnight."

Non of these teams have played against Fimble lovers before and little to nothing is known about them, other than that they shall most likely beat FLP. Nedalia are known to have a strong U21 squad, and shall most likely the toughest opponents.

The team is in heavy training, and on the strength of U21 and club performances may perform well. However this is not how the fans see it, as they anticipate another large failure.

The Nedalia Lions

The 4 groups were announced today, and our beloved Lions were drawn into the Legalese region. Fimble Loving People, Euroslavia, and Beaneastan make up the rest of th Group D, providing potentially some sizzling match-ups.

"I can't say Im too pleased with the Group competition we have...we're going to have to work our asses off if we want to qualify into the quarter-finals. I mean, nothing is known about Euroslavia, I dont even know what their roster is like. I have not seen them in action nor have I seen any scouting reports on them. This obviously concerns me."

"Beaneastan, ofcourse, is always associated with their star Robert Lavatte, who's gonna cause lots of problems for us. Not too many teams are successful in stopping him, so obviously we're going to have to use all of defensive effort in making sure he doesnt hurt us too much. Dadon Thomas has the talent to do really pull off some wonderful moves, we're going to need to contain him in the middle. I'll probably throw Hardman on him, man mark him. I haven't had the chance to meet Meher Fields as of yet, but I do wish to warn him, Beaneastan vs. Nedalia will be a match we wont forget anytime soon."

"As for FLP, well, I do know a little about that team. Like us, they are a pretty young team, if anything, somewhat lacking in experience. But then again, they definitely have the talent to take the FLP banner all the way to the Championship, so the match between us should be a cracking one. The one thing I fear the most is their attacking duo of Dome and Staff. Talk about talented individuals, these kids will destroy our defense if we dont man them up and rough them around. We need to able to stop them, or they will just run us by."

Gamman also went on to comment about Nedalia's own attacking proficiency, but stressed that their U21 accomplishment meant nothing here. He has more than few carryovers from that team, and they are a year older, but he kept saying that this was a whole new type of game. Overall, however, the Lions will be looking to compete as contenders, and there will a be a quiet disappointment if this team doesn't make a push to become champions of the BoF.

Snakes drawn into Group C in Legalese

Bestiville, Kazakhstania, Bettia. Those are the three teams Zanzabarland has to face in the qualification round of World Cup XXII Baptism of Fire. The FAZ has yet to learn anything about these three teams, but they have recieved a lot of match footage of previous BoF's to get an idea of how they are run. Despite the limited knowledge of the three teams they will be playing, Dallas Hickman's squad is prepared for anything.

"We have been practicing hard and preparing, playing with some of the leadership from Fmjphoenix and their teams. We think we have a good chance to go far in the Baptism of Fire and look forward to bringing great football to all of our fans." Hickman had as his closing statements of the press conference today.

Lapp scores Zanzabarland's first goal as they earn first win

Tiffany Lapp scored her the first goal in Zanzabarland history. Her 11th minute header provided to be all the scoring needed as the Snakes earned their first victory in history against Bettia, going 1-0 in the Baptism of Fire opener.

Bettia won the flip and started off with a quick attack, but Braden Lamar, Fmjphoenix's Powell Lamar's cousin, was up for the task today. The first shot was on target, but was cleared by Lamar. A few minutes later, Lapp was on the strike with Harold Starr leading the charge. When Starr got challenged, he dumped the ball off too Lapp, who passed to herself through an oncoming defenders legs, then took a shot that hooked in neatly into the topleft corner of the net for the first goal for Zanzabarland, and the only goal of the match. Halftime came quicker than anyone though, as both teams spent it running up and down the pitch. The Snakes had 8 goals on target to Bettia's 4.

During the second half, it looked as if the Snakes would strike again, but the shot that Gavin Darklighter fired took a wicked curve right and narrowly went wide. Bettia did not really attack hard during the second half, and with the lack of effort they put forth made it that much easier for the Snakes to just sit back and play defensive formations. The match ended with Zanzabarland holding onto the ball for 12 minutes and not getting any challenges from the Bettian players.

Manof the match was really woman of the match, as it was awarded to Tiffany Lapp for her lone goal. Despite the reletive ease with the match, Coach Dallas Hickman restated that it was only the first match.

"That was only number one. Its always to get that first win out of the way so you don't feel so pressured, but now its time to provide consistancy. Now we have to go out against Kazakhstania and do exactly what we did today. Play hard and aggresive and hold leads. I feel if we can perform as well as we did today, we will have a good chance of winning again."

Bettia Bitten By Snakes

Zanzabarland 1 Bettia 0
Lapp 11

Ian Atkins was left with plenty to think about after seeing his side fall to an 11th minute goal by Zanzabarland's Tiffany Lapp, which leaves the Aroras bottom of Group C after one match.

"It wasn't the scoreline that disappointed me as such, it's the manner of the defeat. Their goal was rather soft to say the least, and although we tried our best to get back at them, our heads just seemed to go down in the second half. In the end, it was as though the final whistle couldn't come soon enough."

Bettia slumped to a disappointing 1-0 defeat at the hands of Zanzabarland this afternoon following an uninspiring display at the Abbey Stadium.

Although the Snakes had the better of the first half, Bettia were first to attack with Abdul-Rahim's rasping shot from just inside the area parried by Lamar in the seventh minute.

Four minutes later, veteran midfielder Starr passed to Lapp who cheekily nutmegged the oncoming Gareth Coates and slotted the ball into the top corner to score the only goal of the game.

In the end the strike was enough for the Snakes to claim the three points, with the Aroras unable to break down their opponents or seriously test Snakes' goalkeeper Braden Lamar in their chase for an equaliser in the remainder of an end-to-end first half.

An Evan Brooks free-kick that sailed inches over the Zanzabarland crossbar was the closest as Bettia came to a goal in the opening half, and Snakes' Larrard Beru was ever-so-slightly more wayward when he fired into the sky from something like 40 yards out.

A corner on the half-hour mark saw John Harding steal in front of his marker to head wide at the near post, and then a free-kick from Evan Brooks caused some momentary mayhem in the Zanzabarland penalty area, as Abdullah teed up Omar Whistler, whose first attempt on goal was blocked, before a second whistled wide of Lamar's right post.

Whistler was involved again a couple of minutes later as he burst forward before firing a cross-come-shot into the box which Cincy blocked for a corner, and then the half ended with Zanzabarland threatening Amir Bettison's goal on the break, with a through-ball to Tiffany Lapp seeing the Aroras goalkeeper out early to stop the striker in her tracks as she ran on goal one-on-one.

The second half saw the game open up slightly, although there was still little in the way of consistency as far as Bettia's attacking play was concerned.

Zanzabarland however came out all guns blazing after the restart, and almost found themselves two goals ahead on 46 minutes after some poor Bettia defending.

A break forward down the middle saw the ball fall to Borris Jelato, and after his initial shot was only parried by Bettison, Gavin Darklighter hit a stunning shot which curved the wrong side of the post.

Jelato could have made 2-0 within seconds as more indecisive Bettian defending saw the Zanzabarland man in space just seven yards out, and it needed a strong arm from Bettison to push a powerful shot up and over his crossbar.

A series of corners in the following minutes led to very little in the way of efforts on goal for Zanzabarland, and in the end they were able to hold on to their advantage until the final whistle relatively easily, with Bettia making very little impact on their opponent's defence despite the pacy duo of Brown and York being brought on with 20 minutes to go.

Looking forward to the next match against Bestiville - who are currently joint-second after a 1-1 draw with Kazakhstania - Atkins commented, "Quite frankly I'm mystified as to how we just gave up in the second half. It could be lack of experience at this level, or lack of fitness. One thing's for sure though - there were over 20000 fans that made the long journey from Bettia to Legalese, and we shall be looking to reward them with a much better attacking performance. I may be looking to make some tactical changes, and perhaps give some of our younger, quicker players a chance."

The Nedalia Lions

- NEDALIA: 5 (Mattan 23, 78) (Kenneth 38) (Nene 54) (Fouad 86)

- EUROSLAVIA: 0

MOTM: Mattan

Our boys did us proud on the First Matchday against Euroslavia, winning a one-sided affair in an absolutely fantastic first ever performance. The Lions never looked threatened the entire match, much to the delight of Coach Gamman.

The Lions got off to a great start with Mattan's 23rd minute header which sent the Nedalians off to the southeast corner of the stadium to celebrate with their fans. Nene was the deliverer of the cross that ended up at the back of the net thanks to Mattan's fabulously timed jump, beating 2 Euroslavian defenders in the process.

The Lions didn't let up however, and 7 minutes before the end of the 1st half, attacking midfielder Kenneth blazed a shot by the Euroslavian keeper from just outside the box. Putting together a breathtaking display of passes together, Kenneth finally took the shot after receiving a beautiful set up by defensive midfielder Hardman, the enforcer of the team.

Nedalia continued the onslaught in the 2nd half, and just about 10 minutes after the whistle had blown to start the half, Nene performed a one man show that was magical. Receiving the ball just after half field, Nene ran the length of the rest of the field on the left wing, dribbling by 2 Euroslavian defenders. Cutting back into the middle, and through another 2 defenders with very clever footwork, he proceeded to run at the keeper and chip the ball over his head, ending a captivating run by the 18 year old Bronkstone midfielder, and giving the Lions a convincing 3 - 0 lead.

But oh no, it wasn't the end that. After a confused shuffle in the box from a corner, the ball ended near Mattan, who simply tipped the ball in to give the Lions a 4 - 0 margin. The 78th minute goal was Mattan's 2nd of the game and sealed his Man of the Match status.

And just to seal the deal, 4 minutes before the end of the match, Ali Fouad, the Lions' right midfielder, scored after performing a beautiful one-two with Nene, who delivered his 2nd assist of the night.

Manager Randy Gamman said after the match how proud he was of the Lions.

"Well the score speaks for itself, donnit? I mean, I wasnt sure what to expect from this Euroslavian side, but in truth, they posed no problems. Our defense was much better than I expected, keeping the attackers under control at all times. Our offense, which is never really a worry, delivered another fabulous performance, keeping up with the U21 team that lit up the U21 World Cup."

"But this is the easiest match we're going to have all tournament, I guarantee that. I hope the players are wise enough to realize that, and not attempt to think that they can relax from here on. We have our next match against FLP, potentially the most dangerous match of the Group stages for us. They defeated Beaneastan 2 - 1, a very solid result against a solid team, so we're gonna have to get out there and bring all that we've got against 'em."

In any case, Nedalians everywhere will be, in customary fashion, celebrating this first victory with passion...and lots of partying.

"Right lads. One hour till kick-off. Now, you boys did alright in the first game, but you've got to pick things up a bit. There's a lot of people in the crowd and back home looking for us to do a good job today. First of all - defence... I was very disappointed with the way that goal went in."

"*snigger* Yeah, who'd have thought it.. Coatesey nutmegged by a girl! Probably too busy looking at her t-"

"Oi! That's enough! Anyway Said, how's that hamstring of yours bearing up?"

"Still feeling a little tight. Not sure if it'll be 100%."

"Right, well I'm not risking it, we need you fully fit. John McKinnon, you'll be taking his place. Now, for this match I've decided to go for a 4-3-3, hopefully this'll give us some more attacking options, especially if Bestiville play as defensively as Zanzanzabarland. Jason, I'll be swapping you with Judson York. Yorkie, you'll play on the left side up front. Stu - in the centre, and Gethin on the right - let's see if you boys can reproduce your club magic. Midfield - I'm having Connick in the middle. Brooksy, I'm moving you over to the left-hand side, with Aaron Brown on the right."

"What? You're dropping me? Why?"

"Don't worry Hardy, you played well yesterday. We all know that. I'm just trying something different today, that's all. Besides, I want you fit for Kazakhstania."

Hockey Canada opens with a win.

After a close 2-1 win over Stumperia, Hockey Canadians are taking a break before their next game. They worked hard to get the win, especially Joe Schmo, who got a goal and an assist in the effort. The game opened with Schmo getting a pass from Felton John before bending over to reveal John wearing (put whatever your imagination wants it to be). This distracting the Stumperia defenders and keeper, Schmo shot the ball sohard it might have been picked up on a Vilita Richter-scale.

Stumperia didn't go down without a fight though... they ended up scoring to even the game up in the 51st minute on a long shot that keeper Kyle Thomas struggled to stop. Stumperia played well but didn't last in the 82nd minute when Schmo passed long to a running Greg Cheveraux. Cheveraux just ran in and poked a goal past the Stumperia keeper.

Hockey canada will try for win #2 tonight against either Nova Mercia or United Fontians.

Corneliu defeats Gregenburg 4-2

In their first BoF match, Corneliu came out kicking and never looked back. They dominated from start to finish. In the end, they wound up with their very first world cup victory winning by the score of 4-2.

"This was good for us. We played our hearts out and we defeated our opponet. This is giving us the confidence we need as we move into day two of this competition." Coach Morgan was saying. "We are also glad to be here competing. Hopefully we can take what we did here today and apply it to our next opponet. We want to go far in the tournament. We want to win this but we also know that we still have a long way to go."

The first goal of the game was scored by Forward Peter Testa on a cornor kick. The ball sailed over the outstretched keeper's hands and Peter headed it into the back of the net. The second goal was also scored by Peter 10 minutes later at the 40 minute mark. This time, he faked out a defender and hammered it in from just outside the box on a hook kick. The goalie never had a chance of stopping it.

In the second half, Gregenburg scored on a penalty kick at the 67 minute mark because of a dangerous tackle by Travis Roberts. Eric Peterson of Corneliu made it 3-1 when he hammered the kick past two defenders and a diving goalie. Peter Scored his hat trick on a penalty kick when he was intentionally hauled down. This resulted in a yellow card. Gregenburg made it the final 4-2 at the 88 minute mark on a beautiful cross and header.

FLP opened their BoF campaign with a close win over Beaneastan.

The match started off quietly, before a cross saw Simon head in from inside the 6 yard box. Beaneastan immediately fought back with a torrent of shots on keeper Earl Brians, whose performance deservedly gained him the MoM award.

The match continued as before after half-time, with the FLP midfield keeping posession. Thus the pass to Staff in the 78th minute which led to a dazzling run and a goal surprised the Beaneastan defence.

The team, thinking they had the game wrapped up, let off a little at this point. However there was little the Beaneastan team could do until a Lavatte volley put them back in the game. However it was too little too late and the whistle blew to signal an FLP victory in their first full international match.

The team is now looking forward to playing Nedalia, who have shown they are a force to be reckoned with after destroying Euroslavia. They have a strong team which will only get stronger as its young players gain experience.

NNTV LIVE BROADCAST - We are reporting live from the Legalese region and we are at hand for manager Randy Gamman, who the media will be fielding questions towards.

Mr. Gamman, what are the preparations you are taking for your upcoming match vs. FLP?

- What we've been doing, no difference. I am impressed with the boys, they have completely forgotten about their 5 - 0 and are concentrating at the game at hand. A win against FLP will guarantee are spot in the final 8, something which are intent on doing. We refuse to be held back. So to answer your question, our preparations are what they have been: hard work, intense practices, and a determination that will not be mended.

We understand that Yamtech might be out next game? Is that true?

- Unfortunately yes, but the good news is that the injury will only cost him the FLP game. He'll be back in the lineup for the game against Beaneastan. Tim James will be starting in his place. I know what people are saying, he is 17, he is too young to be featured in the national side, but I ask you this: Tell me how many players you have seen with his pace, speed, and ball skills. Phenomenal that kid, and I have a feeling he will prove it vs. FLP.

Are you confident about advancing out of the Group Stage?

- No doubt. Like I said before, we are not here to merely wave Nedalia's flag. We are here to at the very least contend for that title, and we will not rest till we are out or the tournament completes with us as champions. Dont get me wrong, we have a tough task containing FLP offense and Lavatte from Beaneastan, but do we believe we can do it? Yes, absolutely.

Final Question. Who do you fear most in the tournament?

- Fear? We fear nobody. However, if you are asking who else can be considered competition for the title, then I have to point out Nova Mercia, Corneliu, and Hockey Canada. It will be a great matchup if we meet up with one of those teams.

Lapp scores again, Snakes going to next round

Tiffany Lapp scored her second goal of the tournament and a second clean sheet by Braden Lamar ensured the Zanzabarlan Snakes their spot into the next round with another 1-0 victory, this time agiainst an undermanned Kazakhstania. Their second win gives them 6 points, and garuntees them 1st place in Group C, and entry into the second round.

This match was started off as a quiet fight. Kazakhstania won the toss and started off strong. What was not expected was fierce challenges by the midfielders. Gavin Darklighter, Justin Leech and Kerry Osirus provided more challenges against Kazakhstania, and just being a general nusience on the pitch for their whole team. Kazakhstania managed one shot on the goal in their first strike, but it was cleared out by Lamar. Coach Hickman must have been watching previous Rejistania matches, because he had his squad playing a near perfect karela. The first half ended in a 0-0 tie, with only 9 total shots taken, 6 by Zanzabarland.

The second half was quick to start though, as they came right out of the gates with an all out attack, sending all 3 forwards along with all 5 midfielders. The attack lasted close to 20 minutes and ended with the lone goal of the match on a rebounded shot from Larrard Beru. The last 25 minutes saw an unorthodox 1 forward, 6 defenders, and 3 midfielders. But the formation worked as Kazakhstania could only take two good shots, one deflected and the other caught by Lamar. Lamar recieved man of the match with a clean sheet and 6 saves.

With the victory over Kazakhstania and another draw by Bestiville, the Snakes have 6 points. Bestiville is in second place with 2 points. Despite the qualification, Coaches Hickman and Fenton refuse to take it easy. Both of them said that because they are a young team with very little expierence, they need to play their best and as hard as they can. This match will be important for the Snakes, as they wish to keep their record spotless. Look for them to try and come out and show some offensive flare to match their strong defensive play.

Two games. Two wins. Eight goals. David Bixler, we salute you. The students have outshone the masters with this result in the Baptism Of Fire tournament. Former governers Krytenia were knocked out at this stage almost three decades ago, but Nova Mercia have QUALIFIED!

Stumperia simply did not know what hit them. Andy Roberts' lightning hat-trick was astonishing, and practically killed the game inside ten minutes. Half-Druidan captain Ieuan Morland's goal was simply the icing on the cake.

Also through are NM's next opponents, Hockey Canada. The side looked "pucking awesome" in their six-nil demolition of United Fontians, and the two sides are playing simply for position. Expect goals, lots of goals.

"Mr. Harmon!" shouted his assistant editor on the other end, "Where have you been? We have a situation here at the office, and this is the third time I've tried to call you about it!"

Harmon groggily replied, "Anderson, I've told you to never call me here before noon. What did you expect to hear from me? Anyways, what's the problem?"

"The Baptism of Fire scores are wrong."

"Wrong? Who gave the reports?"

"Well, the reports were right, and so were the final results."

"Wait... then what's the problem?"

"Well, the matchups were misrecorded. Apparently whoever was to check that sort of thing didn't do a great job at it. Have you been drinking again?"

Harmon turned away for a moment. His head was killing him. "What, me? I wouldn't make a mistake like that! Besides, we'll just print a correction tomorrow."

Harmon hung up, thinking that he had escaped that situation. Now to take care of the hangover...

Corneliu Ties Davidstand

Corneliu is continueing to show their soccer prowess. Though they tied Davidstand 2-2, they showed that they can play from behind. Peter Testa had 1 goal and assist in todays matchup bringing his point total to five. The other goal was scored by Robert Johnson in the 74 minute to tie it.

In the first half, the game was evenly played. Both sides jockeyed for position. The score was 0-0 going into the 21st when Peter Testa received a pass from fellow teammate Eric Johnson into the penalty area and he kicked it passed an outstretched goalie to make it 1-0. Right before halftime, Davidstand scored on a corner kick in the 43rd minute.

In the second half, Davidstand scored another goal from just outside the penalty area. The ball bounced off the inside post and bounced into the net at 60 minute mark. In the 74 minute, Robert Johnson took a pass from Peter Testa that was right in the middle of the penalty area. He manuevered around a Davidstandi defender and flipped the ball over a diving goalie with his outstretched hands over his head.

This had to be one of the greatest games I think I have ever witnessed. Corneliu has another group match and it'll be Spirit Nation. Though Spirit Nation has already been eliminated, it is a must that Corneliu must either tie them or beat them. Good Luck in your next game Corneliu.

Hockey Canada advances on major fluke. 6-0 for a high-defense team.

How in the world?

Your guess is as good as mine when you ask how probably the most defensive team in the tournement, Hockey Canada, could beat United Fontains 6-0 in a rout from start to finish. Yanic Perrault scored 4 goals in the game to get him in the scoring race, not to forget Greg Cheveraux scoring in the 42nd minute and sub Swane Gretzky scoring late into injury time.

But it wasn't all like this. United Fontains got a few good shots off on keeper Kyle Thomas but it wasn't enough as the new 7-2-1 formation proved effective. Nova Mercia will play Hockey Canada later on, winning 4-0 against both teams they've played against. Nova Mercia is expecting goals but Hockey Canadian players will try to deny any chance Nova Mercia gets.

"They're a really good team." Captain Dave Semenko said in an interview. "It'll be a really good game and possibly a preview of the final. But I could be mistaken. The Legalese Region has some damn good teams too. Either way it'll be a fun game to watch."

Scoring summary:

Atkins Fuming, Williams Sees Red

BETTIA 1 Abdul-Rahim 85 (pen)
BESTIVILLE 1 Parkin 5 (pen)

Bettia manager Ian Atkins was left fuming at what he called "a pathetic, shambolic display of refereeing", as ten-man Bettia came back from a goal down to earn a point against Bestiville in this afternoon's BofF Cup clash.

Referee Clive Penton handed Bestiville the perfect, albeit controversial start after penalising Musa Williams for what he saw as deliberate handball on the line, only for Stuart Abdul-Rahim to level things up five minutes from time.

Bestiville started the game brightly, with Parkin forcing a fine save from Amir Bettison as he headed goalwards from a corner, before Bettison was involved again moments later as he saved point-blank from a Drekkian effort.

With five minutes of the game gone, another attempt from Drekkian was harshly adjudged to have been blocked by William's hand, with referee Penton pointing to the spot and dismissing the Aroras left-back at the same time.

Bettison looked to have rescued things when he got down well to his left to deflect Parkin's weakly-struck spot-kick wide only for Penton to controversially djudge that he had moved from his line too early, although TV pictures seemed to suggest otherwise, and so ordered the penalty to be taken again. Parkin slotted the spot-kick home into the bottom left corner of the goal, much to the annoyance of Bettison who appeared to get a touch as he dived away to his right.

This turn of events forced manager Atkins into reshuffling his team, substituting striker Judson York for defender Amir Bin Da'ud.

Gareth Coates headed over from an Amir Brooks corner as Bettia responded at the other end, before Marcus volleyed over for Bestiville after a cross in from the right.

Gabalfa Rovers team-mates Stuart Abdul-Rahim and Gethin Ward exchanged passes on the edge of the area before playing Amir Brooks through on goal, but just as the Bettian midfielder looked to be in prime position to shoot, he was tripped inside the penalty area. The referee saw things differently to the rest of the stadium however, and he booked Brooks for what he said was a dive.

Ward shot over the bar after Abdul-Rahim held the ball up well, before Abdul-Rahim tried his luck on goal himself after controlling on the edge of the area, only to see Bestiville keeper Merridan make a fairly routine save from his tame effort.

Ward watched a powerful shot deflected wide and Connick blasted over from a corner, before Bestiville went close to increasing their lead with John McKinnon needing to be in the right place to clear off his line from a Parkin shot.

Bettison made another fine save from Parkin, before the last chance of the first half once again saw Bettison involved, as he saved well from a powerful Massa drive that was swerving all the way towards the top corner of the net.

The second half started for Bettia in similar fashion to the first, with the referee pointing to the penalty spot for a handling incident. Carew was the player adjudged to have made contact with the ball after a cross from Bestiville's Applay striking the arm of the Bettian man.

Parkin stepped up confidently looking to add to his goal tally, only to see his penalty sail harmlessly wide of the left-hand post.

Bestiville could have increased their lead just moments later as Marcus was played through one-on-one by a poor pass from Carew, only for Bettison to once again keep his side in the game as he smothered at the feet of the Bestiville man.

Parkin saw Bettison stop another one of his shots midway through the second half, before Abdul-Rahim and Brown teamed up well to play through Ward, who came close to finding himself clean through on goal only for the ball to be taken away from him at the last moment.

Bettia were then cruelly denied an equaliser after 64 minutes, as a Connick pass was threaded through the Bestiville back-four and looked to have sent Brown through on goal, who slid the ball under the advanced Merridan and wheeled away in triumph only to have his celebrations cut short by the referee, who had harshly judged him to be offside.

Brooks charged down a short pass back to the Bestivlle goalkeeper before seeing his rebound go behind the goal, and then Keth came off the Bestiville bench to strike an effort wide of the target.

Abdul-Rahim broke down the left before setting up Brooks for a strike on goal which was deflected wide, and then a long ball forward into the penalty area saw Abdul-Rahim challenge with Merridan for Bestiville, only for the goalkeeper to recover after initially fumbling his catch.

Bettia's efforts were finally rewarded when they snatched an equaliser in the 85th minute. A long throw from Bin Da'ud from just inside his half set up Brooks to swing in a cross from the left, which was met with great aplomb by a rifling Abdul-Rahim header into the bottom corner.

Gethin Ward then fluffed a great chance for Bettia to steal all three points in the six-yard box and Connick fired over, before the final whistle blew moments later to signal the end of the game.

After the game, Ian Atkins was philosophical. "Over the 90 minutes the game was a very even affair, although we always looked the more creative of the two sides, and the team hungrier for the three points. Had the contest seen eleven players against eleven for the duration, it would have been hard to envisage anything other than a home win."

"The way we came back at our opponents after such an infuriating start was very heartening, and I'm sure the fans would agree. We look very threatening in attack, with our midfield and strikers linking up very nicely indeed."

When asked about the refereeing, the Aroras manager was less than kind. "We have studied the tapes of some of the incidents, especially the sending-off, the penalties and our disallowed goal, and it is clear that we were very hard done by. I shall be appealing to the organising commitee against Musa's red card - he is a key player, and we can't afford for him to be suspended for one game. I shall also be making a formal complaint about the conduct of Mr Penton to the cup organisers. I tried to speak to him, both at half-time and after the match to get some explanations, but he just fobbed me off."

LIONS SEAL ENTRANCE TO QUARTERS

As predicted by Lions manager Randy Gamman, the 2nd match of the BoF proved an intense affair for both the Nedalian squad and the FLP squad. What was an undeniably close affair, it took an 88th minute wonder goal from 17 year old Dorpar AC striker Tim James, who was replacing the injured Shoreland striker Chris Yamtech, to seal the victory for the Lions.

Despite the lack of confidence portrayed by FLP officials and players, they obviously came into the match with the idea of claiming victory, and it almost wouldve been the case in the 79th minute if it wasnt for a wonderful save by Capteria goalkeeper Derrell Lynch. Just ten minutes before, he had conceded a goal that had shifted the momentum of the match that put FLP aggressively pursuing a second goal.

The 1st half was a well played one from Lions, who were in control and composed. The patience wore off from the steady attacks when, in the 35th minute, they finally broke the FLP defense with some clever play between Fouad and Mattan, with the latter tapping in the goal after a very nice pass from the former. So at the end of the half, it was 1 - 0 for the Lions squad.

The 2nd half started much the same way the 1st half did; with an offensive showcase from the Nedalians. That was expected, but what was suprising was, for the 2nd match in a row, the solid defensive effort that was being shown by the Lions, especially by Huller and Zenith. But it would not stay like that for too long.

In the 69th minute came the FLP goal, and with that the entire momentum of the match shifted. Instead of displaying its now famous offensive talent, the Lions started falling back, desperately trying to defend their goal. Gamman, who was seen on the sidelines screaming at his players, was obviously very displeased with the desicions made by the team on the pitch. And if it wasnt for Tim James and his wonderful 25 meter strike in the 88th minute, this match wouldve ended as a draw.

"I cannot believe the second half we had. Embarressing, and completely against anything Nedalian. We sat back and defended. Since when do we *bleep*ing defend? We live and die by the amount of goals we score, and we acted like we didnt even want to score any goals. There is a problem here."

Gamman, however, took nothing away from FLP, who he claimed played an exceptional match.

"This is one of the toughest teams I have ever faced, on all levels. They should be proud of themselves, and I have no doubt in my mind they will be joining us in the next round. Solid, solid team. Thankfully, we were able to get the 3 points away from them and seal our advancement into the Quarter-Finals."

The team now has a furious Gamman to look forward to in their next practice, who will most likely attempt to run the team ragged with his offensive preachings. Nevertheless, Nedalians have breathed a sigh of relief after James scored, who has just sealed himself as a national hero after that spectacular goal.

Zanzabarland wins 3rd straight, quarter-finals await

Braden Lamar only had one mistake in the match. Luckily for him Tiffany Lapp and Gavin Darklighter knew how to correct it as the Zanzabarland Snakes rolled to their third straight victory, 2-1 over Bestiville. The victory gave Zanzabarland a perfect 9 for 9 on points with 4 goals scored to only 1 allowed.

Zanzabarland won the flip and started off in a normal 4-3-3 fashon lead by Lars and Lapp. The team came flying down the pitch so fast that the Bestiville defenders did not even have time to set up a formation. Lapp attempet a hard shot, but a clean block knocked the ball away to a defender. The team was in shock, as this was the first time they were stopped on their first attack. That shock went through to every single player on the team. When Bestiville came forth, Braden Lamar did not have complete focus and attention. He let his mental lapse prohibit him on the pitch, and thus, he was delayed in his reaction to a shot by a forward and it passed by his diving hands to put them down for the first time at the 14th minute. On the ensuing kickoff, the Snakes seemed a little distracted by the fact they had never been behind at all. But Gaving Darklighter provided a young spark that they needed to snap out of their funk. With the final minutes in the first half Darkligher recieved a pass from Boris Jelato near the midfield line and ran the Bestiville side of the pitch unchallenged. When he got into the box, a quick move left had the Bestiville goalkeeper lunging the wrong was as he fired a shot home to tie it up at 1 each. The teams went in at the half tied, but with Zanzabarland regaining momentum.

Bestiville came out to start, but they played off slow. They took their time, 10 minutes to march the Snakes side of the pitch, and it did not pay off as the same forward tried to do the same shot again, but Lamar was ready this time. He caught it with one hand, much to the suprise of all the fans in the stadium. He saw a lone player down near midfield and launched to him. It was Harold Starr. He started heading forth, but was quickly challenged by a lone defender. But Starr was way ahead of him. With the drawing of the defender, Lapp had ran past and was all alone. He lofted a pass over the defender and it rolled in front of Lapp's feet. She made quick work of the goalkeeper, winning easily to put the Snakes up 2-1. After the goal, Coach Hickman again went to the unorthodox 1-3-6 formation, but it again held true as Bestiville could not generate any shots against the defensive formation of the Snakes. The match came to an end with a Bestiville defender launching the ball from midfield over the net.

Tiffany Lapp won her second man of the match award for providing the go ahead goal which kept the Snakes undefeated during the qualification round. By finishing first, Zanzabarland has gotten a date set up against Fimble Loving Peoples, the second place team in group D. More will come in a later report. But for now, Hickman and Fenton plan on running drills to keep his team fresh for the next hurdle in the entry tournament.

LIONS SEAL ENTRANCE TO QUARTERS

Having already qualified to the Quarter Finals thanks to their 2 – 1 victory over FLP, Lions manager Randy Gamman took this opportunity to give some of the reserves a run as starters. Besaneastan might have been better off against the team that nearly gave up 3 points against FLP then the one they faced, with the end result being 4 – 0 in favor of the Nedalia Lions.

They were back at their flamboyant best, with the game resembling a competition to see which player could perform the cleverest trick. Flair has always been synonymous with the Lions, and the Matchday 3 game was no exception. In fact, it took only 11 minutes for the team to “flair” their way into scoring, with Innit Point delivering an exceptional pass in between 2 defenders to 17 year old Tim James, who calmly put the ball in the corner of the goal, out of reach of the Besaneastan keeper.

Just 8 minutes after that goal, Downing produced a magnificent solo run, getting by 4 defenders, one at a time, with a showcase of talent and tricks that left the crowd speechless. His goal scoring shot was just as impressive, resembling a cannon ball that saw the top left corner of the goal and giving Nedalia an impressive 2 – 0 lead before the 20 minute mark.

The second half saw even more offensive pressure from the team, who kept their frantic pace up and scored two more goals in the process. The first one came in the 61st minute through Downing again, the fourth and final goal of the game was the property of Innit Point, the Internashionale Starblaydia attacking midfielder, in the 78th minute. Manager Randy Gamman commented after the match:

“Well, it seems like the team responded well to my last attack. Or maybe it was just the squad I featured today. Either way, 4 – 0 is an impressive result and just the way we want to go into the quarterfinals. We have gotten all 9 points, with the final three coming very convincingly. But what I was more impressed with was the way our defense played for the third straight game, very impressive. The team is really coming together, and seems to be legitimate contenders.”

Gamman talked a bit more about the game that had just passed before focusing his attention on the Lions next opposition, Bettia:

“Its going to be a tough match. I know they came in second in Group C with Zanzabarland taking first, but let me tell you something, I think this is the one team that has the potential to give us fits. We need to focus and come out ready to play, or else they will eat us up alive. There can be no lapses or mistakes, we cannot allow any. Everyone has to be sharp. Ive seen them in action and I am dully impressed. I cannot stress enough how good we are going to have to play to defeat this team.”

Experts have been calling for Gamman to start Downing alongside Nene, perhaps taking a defender away and applying a 3 – 5 – 2 as opposed to the diamond 4 – 4 – 2 that Gamman is currently employing. Downing certainly made his case today, scoring two wonderful goals and just generally single handedly destroying the Besaneastan defense, and it remains to be seen what Gamman will do. He has announced, however, that he will not use another formation, as this one seems to working fabulously.

Hockey Canada draws Nova Mercia, to face Corneliu in Vilita Regional semis.

An incredibly close 1-1 tie against Nova Mercia didn't help much for the already qualified Hockey Canada, but they'll take the win against possibly one of the top teams in the BoF. Yanic Perrault scored early in the game but Hockey Canada's defence was finally penetrated late in the game as Nova Mercia levelled the score at 1 each. Late efforts proved helpless as time played against the Hockey Canadians for the late-game goal.

Nova Mercia- 1

Perrault (10)

In other news, Corneliu finished 1st in Group A to give them a game against the Hockey Canadians. They ended up with a 2-0 win over Spirit Nation securing their spot in first. Scouting reports have proved that they're a damn good team and they're not to be taken lightly. Davistand will be playing Nova Mercia after they tied Gregenburg 2-2 to hold on to second place in Group A.

When Hockey Canada plays at the Lirai Asku Castle in Yeaddin, an expected sold-out crowd of 62,000 people will be watching, hopefully Hockey Canadian supporters. As the beer will flow in the castle like a river of um... beer, the winner will be cheered and celebrated as they advance to the regional finals, the loser will be taunted until Hockey Canadian throats are sore and hoarse.

The castle itself was converted into a sporting arena by the Yeaddin Owls who play in Vilita. Though the interior has a professional look, the exterior hasn't lost it's castle appearance. Either way, the game will truly be one heck of a game to watch. Gook luck Corneliu!

A LATE equaliser from Phil Jones was enough for Nova Mercia, as they secured the draw they needed to top Group B. Hockey Canada defended well, however the pressure of the fast-attacking Midlanders proved too taxing even on the Icemen's resolute back line.

Nova Mercia didn't have it all their own way of course. Yanic Perrault's early strike surprised many, not least manager David Bixler who had expected Hockey Canada to start slowly. The Icemen dropped a gear after that, playing an effective catenaccio style of play to frustrate Roberts and Mathews. Jones' goal seemed to rouse the Hockey Canada side, however despite a Perrault effort bringing a good save from Todd Colfox late on, the scores remained level.

Nova Mercia will play a Davistand side believed to be the weakest of the four remaining Vilitan Region sides next, as the tournament moves on to the regional semis. The big game in Vilita though will be what promises to be a slobberknocker of a match in the other semi between Corneliu and Hockey Canada.

Zanzabarland prepares for Fimble Loving Peoples in quarter finals

Dallas Hickman is in a win-win situation. He has shown that he is a capable coach and is able to lead promising players and combine them to perform well. He also has gone undefeated in the qualification round. Win or lose against Fimble Loving Peoples, it has been a good start for the young Zanzabarland Snakes. But why stop here, he asks hims team. He provides a good point.

Fimble Loving Peoples, 2-0-1; 6 points; 2nd place in Group D. That is the next obsticle in the way of Hickman's young team. What will they be trying to focus on in the match?

"I think first we are going to try and pressure their main goal scorers, Simon and Staff. We will challenge those two early and often to try and keep them off guard and get them to take bad shots. If we can get them taking bad shots, we can capitolize on counter-attacks. Secondly we want to pressure on the other side as much as possible. We will try and get out and score as many goals as we can. I feel if we can get onto their side early and play there, we will wear them down and then we can strike. This will probably be our hardest challenge, but we will go out there and give it out all. That is the least we can do"

With that being said, we expect to see the same starting 11 in their normal 4-3-3 fashion. Although he said that they will challenge on their side as often as possible, we expect to see the odd 1-3-6 formation that has provide some excepent defensive formation and provided a lot more stops than they may have been able to get normally. All in all, it is looking to be an exciting match.

Aroras Go A-roaring On... Just

BETTIA 1 Abdul-Rahim 77
KAZAKHSTANIA 0

A joyful Bettia progressed through to the quarter-finals of the Baptism of Fire Cup by the skin of their teeth, thanks partly to this hard-fought victory, and thanks partly to runaway group leaders Zanzabarland doing them a great favour by defeating Bestiville in today's other Group C match. However, they now have a tough task ahead of them in the form of Group D winners Nedalia, whom they meet at the Binchensburg Coliseum.

Manager Ian Atkins retained the 4-3-3 formation which served them well in the previous match against Bestiville whilst making two forced changes, replacing the suspended Musa Williams with Amir Bin Da'ud, and replacing Judson York (who twinged a calf muscle in the Bestiville match) with John Harding. Ian Atkins' side started the game very brightly, and had created three decent chances on goal before Kazakhstania even got started.

Gethin Ward chested a ball forward from the back into the path of Stuart Abdul-Rahim who shot wide of the post, and then the striking duo combined again moments later as this time Abdul-Rahim found Ward whose right-footed effort went just a few inches wide of the left post.

Evan Brooks struck an effort just the wrong side of the post as he broke forward from midfield, before Kazakhstania's first attempt on goal saw Andrey Morev drag a shot wide of Amir Bettison's goal with his left foot.

Ward played a delightful ball into the path of Abdul-Rahim as Bettia broke at the other end, and after initially looking to have got the better of defender Dias Kamelov, the Kazakhstania defender recovered well to make a superb left-footed challenge to deny the striker just as he was about to pull the trigger.

Familtsev cut in from the right side before firing a left-footed effort wide of the target, and then Amir Bin Da'ud needed to be alert as he blocked a Matthew Clarke shot from the edge of the box that came about after a good touch and swivel from the Kazakhstania man.

As the first half neared its end, Familtsev picked up the ball in midfield before running at the Bettian defence. Gareth Coates stood firm though, as he stuck out his left foot to dispossess the Kazakhstania man on the edge of the penalty area.

Abdul-Rahim saw another shot from distance go wide, and a pass from Aaron Brown was just too strong for the Bettia forward moments later, as theyagain threatened to split open the Kazakhstanian back line.

Kazakhstania started positively after the half-time break and it needed some stern defending from Bettia to keep them at bay within the opening few minutes of the second half.

Farkhadbek Irismetov delivered a good cross into the box that Morev did well to control, but despite trying his best to twist and turn his way into a shooting opportunity, he was forced to play the ball back to Familtsev whose shot was cleared by Bettia for a throw-in.

Gareth Coates and John McKinnon did well to clear a dangerous ball in from Buleshev that only seemed to need a touch for it to find its way into the back of the net, and then Bettia enjoyed their first attack of the half with an Aaron Brown run that was eventually brought to a halt on the edge of the penalty area by two Kazakhstania defenders.

Kazakhstania were given a great chance to test Bettison after a menacing run from Nizovtsev saw McKinnon beaten and Bin Da'ud out of sorts, with the latter eventually penalised for scything down the Kazakh man right on the edge of his own penalty area. Fortunately for Bettia though, Familtsev's free-kick went high into the stands behind the goal.

With the game entering its final 15 minutes Bettia were having to absorb a good deal of pressure from their opponents, but although Kazakhstania undoubtedly had more of the ball than their opponents, Bettison was rarely troubled in his goalmouth.

With 13 minutes of the game remaining, and almost out of nothing, Abdul-Rahim unleashed a trademark effort that saw Dmitri Lyapkin beaten and Bettia ahead. The goal came after a knock-down from substitute Bobbie Rosenstiehl (who had earlier come on for Harding after he picked up a knock to his knee) was collected by the Aroras striker, and his shot bounced once on its way to goal, before flicking up off the surface and beating the diving keeper into the top corner of the goal.

Coates and McKinnon combined well at the other end to prevent an almost immediate Kazakhstania reply, and then as the game entered its final seconds, the Kazakhs piled on the pressure, with Coates and Carew both getting their heads in the thick of things to get the ball clear.

A surging run forward from Abdul-Rahim in stoppage time at the end of the game saw some vital seconds wasted, before Kazakhstania's final effort of the contest was hopelessly high from Familtsev, much to the delight of the travelling army of Bettians.

After the match, Ian Atkins enthused "It wasn't the greatest of games to watch but it was a gritty, determined and effective performance from us that saw three points chalked up for us, and most importantly a move up to second spot. On the whole, I'm happy although I feel we need to be a bit more ruthless in front of goal, and stop giving their attackers so much room. At times, we were just standing off them and not taking responsibility for getting the tackle in."

When asked about their next opponents, he replied "They're certainly looking very impressive and no doubt we'll be the underdogs. They finished top of their group with a 100% record, and you don't get that by playing like a bunch of muppets, now do you? However, we've been slowly improving and we can give them a good run for their money provided we keep our concentration and do our respective jobs to the best of our abilities. Me and the coaching staff have been studying some tapes of their games, and I believe we've found a weakness which we can exploit. I won't go into it now for obvious reasons," he said, tapping his nose knowingly, "but we do have a gameplan. Whether it works or not is a totally different matter."

Assistant coach Bobby Fressman chuckled, then turned to Nedalia manager Randy Gamman.

“You here that, Randy? They are going to exploit our weakness.” Fressman said, sarcastically.

“Not right now Bobby.” the manager replied.

“And they have a gameplan all ready and set.”

“Well yes, Bobby. That’s what teams do. They make gameplans. We do it, Im sure every other team in this universe does it. How is it I hired you again?”

“Funny.” Fressman paused for a moment then continued. “Well, what do you think?”

“They’re a good team, a very good one. I think a lot of people have underestimated them. I personally think we’re in for one of the matches of the tournament. What about you, whats on your mind?”

“I think we can definitely win, as long as we don’t perform like we did against FLP. Talk about embarrassing, we nearly gave that game away. We didn’t deserve the 3 points there.”

“Focus on Bettia, Bobby. Its gonna take everything we got to beat them.”

"Hello, and welcome to Baptism of Fire Cup football on the BBC (no, not THAT BCC, this is the Bettian Broadcasting Corporation... tsch, bloody lawyers), and we're looking forward to a veritible feast of action today as our boys take on the Lions of Nedalia. I have in the studio with me a triumverate of footballing wisdom, in the shape of Bert Bin-Siddiq, Ibrahim Wilkins and Razir Winstone. Good afternoon gentleman."

"Hello"

"'lo"

"Alright?"

"The atmosphere has been building all day long, with thousands of fans thronging the streets of Binchensburg here in Legalese, literally turning them into a sea of yellow and green. That's lovely to see. In a moment, we'll have highlights of our boys' victory over Kazakhstania which saw them through to this stage, but first, lets discuss today's match. Now, Nedalia's form cannot be denied, they're well and truly on a roll at the moment. They strikers in particular are on a hot streak - can our defence cope? Bert?"

"I can't see why not. Of course, they'll need to be on their toes - we're onto the knockout stages, and every team that has made it this are here on merit."

"Now, a lot hinges on this 'gameplan' that old Blackbeard has planned for this game, and so far he's done a good job at keeping his cards very close to his chest. We understand through our always-reliable sources that he may be considering some kind of formation change..."

"Would that be the same sources that said you were making the tea today?"

**weak, forced laughter from other guests**

"Oh yes, very good Raz... always the joker! All jesting aside, could the Aroras of Bettia beat the Lions of Nedalia? Well, we've decided to find out with a little matchup of our own. We've got cameras over at Lorshill Safari Park where we can now join our correspondant Jan Booth. Jan?"

"Yes hello, we're here live from Lorshill Safari Park, where we're about to find out... by releasing a pride of lions into the Arora pen!"

"WHAT?!? You can't do that! That's sick! That's cruel! That's inhumane!"

"I know, but we've got an hour to kill until kick-off. Okay Jan, RELEASE THE LIONS!! Oh wow, we're certainly getting some fast, gutsy action here, the two sides are quite literally tearing into each other. The lions are throwing their weight around, and the aroras are using their speed, agility and big teeth to good use. And... oooh, that's got to hurt! What a mess - we'll come back to the safari park in a few minutes time when the park-keepers have had a chance to clean that up. So Ibrahim, do you think today's match will be a reflection on what we've just seen?"

"Well... I.... um..."

"Sorry, but I'm going to interrupt you right there because I've just been handed the Bettia teamsheet... in goal we have Amir Bettison - no surprises there, he's been a safe pair of hands all through this tournament. In defence we have Carew, Ryder, Williams, Coates and Bin Da'ud - now thats interesting, he's gone for a five-man defence there with three in midfield. We have Connick, Whistler and Brooks in the centre of the park, with Abdul-Rahim and Chris Hutton making his cup debut. Well, that's certainly interesting. What do you suppose the thinking is behind that?"

"Obviously, having the five-man defence gives us strength at the back, but Carew and Bin Da'ud are two quick players who are able to launch quick counter-attacks, as we have seen already. So this isn't necessarily a defensive stategy that Atkins is playing here."

"Hutton partnering Abdul-Rahim in attack?"

"Now that was a surprise. He hasn't featured at all in this tournament, but it seems Atkins feels he has the right qualities to make an impact here."

"We shall see. Now, it's back to Jan and the big fight.... what do you mean, THEY'RE all dead? WHAT'S dead?"

“Hahahaha, did you see that BBC (no not THAT BBC…the other one) broadcast with the Lions fighting the Aroras? Hilarious stuff.” Commented 18 year old Nedalian sensation Nene.

“Yeh, that was some funny shit. What the hell is an Arora anyway? Must be some Bettian thing.” responded Innit Point, Internashionale Starblaydia attacking midfielder.

“They got some character, those Bettians. Hey, have you seen any tapes of them in action?” asked Mattan, star striker of the Lions.

“Na, but coach Gamman said they are one hell of a side. He handed us out scouting reports, didn’t you read it?” Nene asked.

“Dude, while you were reading you little scouting report, Yammy (Christ Yamtech), Hardo (Trent Hardman), and I were sitting VIP at the hottest club in Binchensburg. We got invited by these 5 gorgeous girls, we partied all night long.” Mattan replied.

“You’re kidding me right? I’m young, I’m willing, I’m ready some loving. 5 girls! And you couldn’t share one??” exclaimed Innit Point.

“Sorry mate, you know how it is when you get trashed. We were wasted beyond belief, let me tell you.”

“I suppose coach has no idea about this?” Nene stated.

“Coach Gamman? My friend, Mr. Gamman barged into the VIP, started hitting on the girls, got into a fight with a bouncer, and had to be escorted out! All within a span of 20 minutes!”

“But he told me he just watched the news and went to sleep last night…” Innit said, confused.

“Riiiight, and I did NOT hook up with 2 women last night”

“You bastard…” Point and Nene said collectively.

“Right, Bettia. We’ll take ‘em out no problem. I ain’t worried, and neither should you two. Whose going to stop us? We’ll just pull a Nene or two on them, leave them in the dust of our shoes, score a couple of goals, and the Semis will be beckoning for us to come to it.”

“Man, you need to read the scouting reports. Coach said this could be the toughest team we’ve faced all year.” Nene proclaimed.

“Let me tell you something, young one. WE are the team that every other team thinks will be their toughest opposition. WE are the team to beat. Don’t forget that. Ever.”

“I don’t know, Mattan. We’re going to have to bring out our best, shoot to hit, no questions asked.” Innit said.

“That’s the attitude. Right, gonna give the chicks a call. You fellas down for a little ménage-a-cinq? Got to warn you, though, prepare to feel inadequate!” laughed Mattan.

“Mattan, you just have no idea…” Nene said, shaking his head.

"Hello everyone, I'm Jennifer Hedger and I'm with Hockey Canadian ciach Toe Blake. Toe, Hockey Canada is wondering how you could lead a bunch of ragtag players to the top 8 of the Baptism of Fire. What do you think is the key to your success for this tournement."

"I think it's either the teamwork these guys have built, or love."

"Love? Did you just say that LOVE helped your team?"

"Um, can we take that part out?"

"We're live coast to coast"

"Well... then... would you look at that? Lions fighting!"

Toe Blake points to the lions fighting in the Arora pen where things are getting pretty messy.

"Toe, are you trying to distract 500 million people from saying that love built the team?"

"I guess so."

"On the other hand, Kyle Thomas has been great between the pipes, do you think you're putting too much pressure on the 14 year-old?"

"No I don't think so. He did good in the U21WC14 so were confident in him."

"Lets not forget Yanic Perrault, he's really been coming out. Especially in his 4-goal contribution against United Fontains, not to forget the go-ahead goal against Nova Mercia. How do you think Corneliu will do against Hockey Canada and Perrault leading the way?"

"We have more than Perrault on the team, I think that he'll be a major threat to anyone. But we have more players that will contribute."

"Think you can beat Corneliu?"

"They're good... it'll be a real tough test."

"Thanks, now back to the melee in the pit. I'm Jennifer Hedger."

After a huge setback against the seemingly unstoppable Nedalia squad FLP went on to beat Euroslavia and book a place in the quarters against a strong Zanzabarland team.

FLP were unlucky to lose out against Nedalia. A great move in the first half put them one-up and Brians was struggling to keep it that low. But after half-time the Nedalians seemed content to rest on their lead. This was the oppurtunity Simon and Staff had been waiting for after barely touching the ball in the first half.

After a terrific strike from Simon put the game back on level terms Nedalia once more found the striking form they are famed for. Brians needed the stopping power of a brick wall to keep them back for the rest of the match and will be disappointed that he let one past so close to the end to give Nedalia their hard fought victory.

After this FLP came up against Euroslavia. The entire team was on top form as 2 goals were slotted past them and a place in the quarter finals was booked. The two strikers were the scorers in a match with a predictable outcome.

In the quarters the teams opponents are to be Zanzabarland. After the team, shown to be strong, released their plans for halting the FLP attack on a live broadcast we had a word with the manager. We asked him what he thought of the Zanzabar plans and how he might counteract them. He had this to say in reply.

"Well they're tacticians have clearly been hard at work. It's a great plan, though they appear to have misjudged the ability of our wingers. But releasing the plans like that may cost them the match. We are currently reviewing our own tactics for the match and have devised a number of formations we may opt with. The 3-4-3 and 3-4-1-2 are both possibilities but we'll have to see how comfortable the team are with them."

"Im deeply disappointed in the way we played. Deeply. I cannot put into words the frustration I feel right now. The match was ours, and we gave it away. I dont know what went through the minds of this team, I dont know if they felt like maybe they would just walk through the tournament and be gifted the BoF cup just for being here. In a way, you have to be somewhat happy this happened. A wake up call is exactly what this team needs. No, you are not invincible, and no, you aren't even close to being the best. Unlike the U21 team that showed such tenacity in the U21 World Cup, this Lions senior squad that came to Legalese to compete in the BoF Cup will forever be remembered for their inconsistency and medioricity. Every Nedalian that walks this universe has every right to be ashamed of the performance put forth by these players that do not even deserve to be wearing that jersey and representing our proud nation. In fact, Im done here. See you in Nedalia."

Bettia Snake Through To Semis

BETTIA 2 Abdul-Rahim 25, Hutton 30
NEDALIA 1 Yamtech 11

Nedalia were sent crashing out of the Baptism of Fire Cup this afternoon as Bettia's newly formed striker partnership of Stuart Abdul-Rahim and Chris Hutton did the business at the Binchensburg Coliseum, setting up a mouth-watering semi-final against the Snakes of Zanzabarland.

Nedalia started the match as by far the better of the two teams, and put Bettia under some concerted pressure in the early stages.

Chris Yamtech tried his luck with a 25-yard effort that crept just a yard or two over the crossbar, and Mattan went close with a bicycle kick that Amir Bettison could only watch as the ball went wide of the post.

Bettia's first corner of the game saw Nedalia forced to head clear off their own goal line, before almost immediately at the other end Nedalia took the lead after an unchallenged header from Ali Faoud saw Bettison beaten.

Faoud's goal came after the Bettia defence didn't deal with a Kenneth corner from the left channel, and the Nedalia man barely had to jump to direct the ball with relative ease beyond Bettison.

Yamtech could have doubled Nedalia's lead minutes later as he was inches away from connecting with a low Nene cross, and the two Lions forwards combined again moments later only for the latter to see his shot blocked by Musa Williams, who returned to the Bettia side after serving a one-match suspension following his controversial red card against Bestiville.

Bettia scored their first goal of the game on 25 minutes after a quick move from the back to the front line saw Nedalia unable to cope. Amir Bin Da'ud found Whistler with a trademark long throw who in turn found Hutton, and the Whitchurch United man was able to play in strike partner Abdul-Rahim who slotted the ball home past Nedalia goalkeeper Darrell Lynch, sending the hordes of Aroras fans into rapture.

Five minutes after getting themselves back on level terms, Bettia found themselves two goals to one up. A cross from Geraint Carew was headed goalwards by John Connick, and after Lynch could only palm the ball away, Hutton was able to sweep the ball home from six yards out after being played in by Brooks to the ecstatic delight of the many fans who had made their way from Bettia.

Bettia noticeably grew in confidence after taking the lead, and created numerous other chances in the closing stages of the first half to pin their opponents back.

Brooks went close with a ferocious 30-yard drive that sailed just a couple of inches past the outstretched Lynch's gloves and wide of the post, and Michael Ryder and Evan Brooks combined well on the edge of the box before the latter saw his shot on goal blocked by a Nedalia defender.

The second half saw Bettia start the brighter of the two sides, with a number of shots on goal by the Aroras coming within the minutes immediately following the restart.

Brooks played a great low ball into the box which Vastu needed to be alert to deal with, and then Abdul-Rahim played in Hutton whose shot was well saved by Kuipers.

Nedalia came back with a Kenneth cross that Yamtech headed wide, and an Hardman left-footed drive that crept just wide of Bettison's post.

Mattan then tried his luck with a 30-yard shot that dipped just too late as Bettison watched the ball sail over his crossbar, before the Bettia goalkeeper was called into action by the same man minutes later as he made a great reaction save to prevent the Lions drawing level.

Bettison produced another fine stop as Nedalia stepped up a gear, diving low to his left to push away a Nene drive.

Coates headed clear from beneath his own crossbar as Nedalia continued to throw balls into the Bettia penalty box, and Bin Da'ud blocked a run from Yamtech as the Lions began to run out of ideas.

Bettison made a final superb save in stoppage time as Yamtech turned and fired in a low shot inside the penalty area, and then just moments later the referee blew his whistle to signal the end of the game, and Bettia's sensational progress continued with a cup victory over a side that many had fancied to beat them.

Bettia now travel to The Castle in Legalese City to face Zanzabarland for the second time in this competition, having already lost to them 1-0 in their opening fixture.

When asked for his thoughts about this enthralling game, Bettia manager Atkins replied "Of course I'm very happy with the result. To progress to the semi-final of this, our first ever competition, was beyond everyone's expectations. However, we have once again been proven to be rather slow starters, and that has got to be remedied somehow. We can't afford to keep chasing games. Having said that, the way we recovered from a goal down today was magnificent. We looked very threatening at times, and our wing-backs Carew and Bin Da'ud did an excellent job out there."

Looking ahead to the regional final, Atkins said "The good thing about this game is that Zanzabarland are no longer an unknown quantity to us - having already faced them, we know the kind of thing we can expect. They played rather defensively last time around, so we probably won't be using the same tactics that failed to break them down in the first game. Mind you, they could also be thinking that we think we know what their tactics will be and change their tactics to fool us. Then again, if we know that they know that we know what their tactics are, we might have to change our tactics because they might keep their usual tactics thinking that we think that they will change their tactics because we think that they will change their tactics because we think we know their tactics. Ah, but if they know that we know that they know that we know that they know that we know what their tactics are... um... oh sod it. Man, I need some chocolate."

"Anyway, I must say that our supporters, the Stormin' Aroras, were magnificent today, as they have always been throughout this week. Very vociforous, very vocal. I'm not to sure about that song about me though - 'Blackbeard, Blackbeard, Bla-aackbeard. He's the greatest boss, but he looks a bit wierd, Bla-a-a-ackbeard'. Hmmm, needs a bit of work dontcha think? Or is it cos I can't sing?"

IT took penalty kicks for these two sides to be separated, but by the narrowest of margins, Nova Mercia won through to the Regional Final last night.

Davistand took the lead on twelve minutes, however a second half equaliser from Ian Mathews was enough to force extra time. Mathews added his second of the game six minutes into the second peroid, but once again the game was levelled with two minutes remaining. Eight penalties came and went into the back of the net. Then up came <Forward #9>. He shot low and to Colfox' right, however Colfox was just able to tip it round the post. Tony Aspell powered home the deciding penalty to finish the game.

"Good afternoon, and welcome to live Baptism of Fire Cup football. And who would've thought we'd be seeing our own team making it to the semi-finals? Joining me again in the studio are our usual motley collection of pundits - Bert, Ibrahim and Razir. In a moment, we'll be showing highlights of yesterday's win over Nedalia. But first we caught up with Bettia's top scorer Stuart Abdul-Rahim to hear some of his thoughts..."

_________

"Stuart, it's been quite a tournament so far, hasn't it?"

"It certainly has. We started off very slowly against Zanzabarland, we just didn't get into our stride at all. And what happened in the first half against Bestiville was quite unbelievable - we all thought that was it, our competition was over before it had began. But we pulled our socks up in the second half, got the goal back, secured our first point and its got better from there. We're feeling happy with the way things are going."

"So, what do you make of today's opponents?"

"Zanzabarland are obviously a good side. They beat us in the first game and ended up winning the group with a 100% record. And you don't get that by playing like a bunch of muppets. Heh... sorry boss, I just nicked your quote there, didn't I? Anyway, we've already played them so we know the kind of thing to expect. Hopefully we'll make some more inroads this time round. But even if we lose today, it doesn't matter. In just a matter of one week, we've made enormous progress and we're ready for the World Cup whatever happens today and tomorrow."

"Any last thoughts?"

"I just want to say that the hospitality shown to us by the Legalise FA, this hotel and the people of this country in general has been wonderful. Unfortunately there are no mosques here - well, none that we could find anyway - but the management here in the Binchensburg Copthorne Manor very kindly set aside one of their conference rooms for us to use for praying in. very kind of them. Oh, and that thing yesterday with the lions? Will you guys be repeating that with some snakes this time?"

"Erm, probably not Stu. We had to fork out a load of money to buy those lions, and we've only got enough left in our budget to buy a few earthworms, and thats hardly a fair contest!"

"You're telling me. Those Aroras might've been ugly buggers - a bit like us really - and they were a bit slow getting into things - a bit like us - but once they got going they were unstoppable - a bit like us? Nah, thats pushing things a bit too far."

"Stuart Abdul-Rahim, thank you."

__________

"Some interesting comments there. Seems a bit dissappointed there won't be a Aroras vs Snakes showdown in honour of today's match... or will there? Stay tuned to find out! Now, we have the team sheet for today's match, and perhaps unsurprisingly, Ian Atkins has chosen to stick with the same starting eleven that perform so well against Nedalia. That's a 5-3-2 formation with Amir Bettison in goal. In defence, its Carew, Ryder, Williams, Coates and Bin Da'ud, with Connick, Whistler and Brooks in midfield, with Hutton partnering Abdul-Rahim up front. He seems to be following the old adage 'if it ain't broke don't fix it'. Its been tried and it worked once - will it work again Bert?"

"It all depends on how Zanzabarland line up defensively. In the first game, well it may just by my eyes, but they seemed to be playing 6 at the back near the end in an effort to hold onto their lead. If they try something like that again, Bettia may have to resort to playing some Route One football to bypass the back line. I really hope they don't, they've been playing some wonderful running footy in the last two-and-a-half games and I've love to see it continue."

"Me too. Now then, I believe we're going to Janice at Lorshill Safari Park. Janice? What have you got for us?"

"Hello. Now we had a number number of complaints after yesterday's 'match'. Mind you, we also had record viewing figures and news coverage in a number of countries, and the question of many people's lips is... what the hell is an Arora? Well, the Arora Aboombass is the national animal of Bettia where it lives in great numbers within our lush mountain forests. Now, its kinda hard to describe how it looks... I suppose it's best described as a dome-shaped squid kinda-thing with stumpy, fleshy legs instead of tentacles, odd-looking squinty eyes and a big flappy mouth concealing rows of small needle-sharp teeth. They're usually good-tempered creatures, but can get nasty as we saw yesterday. And they taste great covered in salt and vinegar with chips."

"Thank you Janice for that fascinating insight. We'll be going live to the stadium to sample the atmosphere after this short break... Cor, I tell you its a good job the folks back home can't sample the atmosphere here in this studio - who's farted?"

Zanzabzaland continues impressive streak, prepares for Bettian remach in Semi-Finals

Tiffany Lapp continued scoring. Braden Lamar continued stopping. Challenges kept flying all over. Those three factors shut down Fimble Loving Peoples and kept the momentum rolling for the Snakes as they defeated FLP 2-0 in the BoF Quarter-Finals. Now the Snakes have to prepare for Bettia, the team that defeated heavy favorites Nedalia. This will be a rematch of Matchday 1 when Zanzabarland defeated the Arora's 1-0.

Going back to the match against Fimble Loving Peoples, Zanzabarland was in control throughout the whole match. It was one of the most dominating performences by the Snakes yet in their short history. FLP won the flip and started off with the ball. Simon headed up with the ball, but was immediatly challenged by Dumal Credabi. Simon passed off to Staff, but Gavin Darklighter was already on top of him and Staff could not hold onto the pass and it was booted out and recovered by Justin Leech. All three forwards were already on the FLP's side of the pitch and waiting when Leech launched the ball past midfield. The pass was directed to Borris Jelato. He was meet by Fred Munst, but Jelato crossed over to Lapp, who got into the box and went for the shot. But before she could shoot, she was hit hard by Terry Wight, and he was given a yellow card. Lapp defeated Earl Brians on the penelty to put the Snakes up 1-0 in the 18th minute. This time when FLP came on the attack, they were able to get past a few of the challenges, one of the best when Simon lifted the ball up to his headlevel and jumped over a slide by John Cincy. But it was all for nothing as Simon's shot was dead on target, but so was Braden Lamar. That was only the beginning. The first half ended quietly, as the Snakes held onto the ball for close to 20 minutes before a finally taking a shot at the 43rd minute, but it was tipped above the goal by Brians. FLP could not get anything going in the remaining minutes of the first half as the long kick rolled into Lamar's hands.

The teams came back out in the second half, but the lineup was not the same for Zanzabarland. Coach Hickman had changed his formation and lineup from a 3-5-2 to a 2-3-5. Lapp and Darklighter were plaing forwards, Leech, Wegman and Osirus as midfielders, and everyone but Chris Kulat playing on the defense. Zanzabzarland kicked off into their own territory, but was immediatly pressed by a more aggressive Fimble Loving Peoples team. Staff stole the ball away from Geneva Wegman and just went straight forward. From about twenty feet out, he took a shot that hooked down to the left, but Lamar was there every step of the way. He caught it before it could bounce into the net. With the clearence, the Snakes played slowly. Taking their time as they headed up the pitch. 15 minutes later, it was Lapp and Darklighter about 23 feet away from the box with ounly one defender in front of them. Darklighter went to the defender and passed right to Lapp, who was streaking into the box alone. She kept going towards the left side of the goal, but stopped dead in her tracks and shot right, catch Brians off with the sudden stop. Lapp second goal put the Snakes up 2-0 at the 74th minute. After the goal, the FLP squad seemed to have lost the motivation. They listlessly kicked off and within 2 minutes, the Snakes had recovered the ball from them. This time they did not try and come forth, and they were not challenged at all by FLP. The match ended 2-0 and Zanzabarland was estatic! Man of the match went to Lapp for the third time in four matches. She has proven to be a top notch scorer for this Zanzabarland team.

So what is next for the young Zanzabarland team? Bettia Aroras await. They are the only team that defeated Nedalia, the higest scoring team in the Baptism of Fire. Bettia has seemed to find their stroke, and have been on a tear since the first matchday. When asked what to expect, Dallas Hickman had these things to say.

"This will be a great rematch when we play Bettia, that is for sure. I have a feeling that this will be a much more fast paced match than the first one, and we will have to be ready for a much harder challenge. I have seen the Bettian matches since we last played them, and they look like a whole different team from the first match. We are going to have to hit tham hard and fast and often, if we want to be able to win this one. Not only that, but I feel that it is of the utmost importence that we shut down their primary scorer Abdul-Rahim. That will be the factor. If we can stop him from scoring, it will be up to them to find someone else who can get them on the board. Look for a very exciting match when we play them. I think we will come out on top, but it will definetly be an earned victory for whomever gets it."

Zanzabarland will be playing Bettia in The Castle in Legalese City. Look for a grand battle between two top teams in the Baptism of Fire.

Bestiville Team truly miffed at being knocked out!

That's right, you heard the statement at the top of the page, the Bestiville team are extremely upset at being knocked out of the BoF.
'Grunt' Parkin said after the sad news.
'Well, we didn't really role-play due to our busy schedule' the BLF president Tony Ingoe said, 'But we are now looking forward to the Lancre Cup. And the World Cup. By heck, we shouldn't have signed up to the World Cup. Hopefully we'll have more time to RP in the actual event.'

The Bestiville government congratulate the teams who have progressed, and apologize for the sheer lack of RPing Bestiville managed to do.

Second Time Lucky for Bettia

BETTIA 2 Brooks 47, Harding 106
ZANZABARLAND 1 Lapp 43

(After Extra Time - score after 90 minutes: 1-1)

Bettia booked their place in the final of the Baptism of Fire Cup today thanks to a tense but deserved 2-1 victory over Zanzabarland here in Legalese City - but they needed an extra half-an-hour to overcome their rivals and erase the memory of their disappointing opening-day defeat to the Snakes.

A strike from Amir Brooks within minutes of the second half restart and a extra-time winner from Chris Hutton overturned a Tiffany Lapp effort at the end of the opening period, to see the Aroras move just one game away from cup glory.

Lapp could have fired Zanzabarland into a dream start after only four minutes after the ball dropped to her unmarked inside the Bettia six-yard box, but she somehow managed to direct her effort straight at Amir Bettison when it would have been easier score than miss.

Bettia responded with a chance for Stuart Abdul-Rahim that was cleared as a clever dinked effort was aimed towards a waiting Brooks, and then Brooks himself was causing mayhem in the Zanzabarland back line as he skipped past two players before alert goalkeeper Braden Lamar came out to smother the danger.

Abdul-Rahim then saw an effort from 25 yards saved, before John Connick got in on the act as well with a shot that was well held by a busy Lamar.

Omar Whistler rattled an impressive effort from 30 yards against the Zanzabarland crossbar, before slightly against the run of play the Snakes edged themselves into a 1-0 lead with only two minutes of the first half remaining.

The goal came after good play from Geneva Wegman saw him evade the attentions of Coates and Ryder, before his pass to an unmarked Lapp was fired home from around 12 yards out.

Bettia responded in the best way possible at the start of the second half, and were back on level terms within a couple of minutes of the restart.

The lively Brooks picked up the ball in midfield before bearing down on goal, and as Lamar came out in an attempt to deal with the danger, the Bettia midfielder delicately dinked his shot over the goalkeeper and into the back of the net.

John Connick nearly made it 2-1 to Bettia moments later as his shot was blocked, and then Ryder appeared to be somewhat fortunate to escape without any punishment at all, as his challenge on Lapp saw the Zanzabarland forward brought down when she was almost through one-on-one with Bettison.

John Harding was brought on to freshen up the attack in place of Abdul-Rahim, who was being marked out of the game by the Snakes defenders in a preconceived tactical move by Snakes coach Dallas Hickman. Harding almost made the perfect introduction as he stretched to touch home a Carew cross into the box, but missed the ball by a matter of inches.

Brooks hardly troubled Lamar with a weak header on goal, although a goalmouth scramble three minutes later saw desperate Zanzabarland defending hack the ball away as Hutton and Harding both went close to scoring.

Harding was again inches away from touching home a cross from Ryan in second half injury time, just seconds before referee Mark Tarowski blew his whistle to signal the end of the standard ninety minutes.

The first half of extra time was characterised by some extremely nervous and edgy football, with both sides tiring and anxious not to make any errors. Zanzabarland reverted to a more defensive formation looking to make it to a penalty shoot-out, whilst Bettia resorted to route one football as the first half came and went without real incident.

All that changed from the kick-off, with Zanzabarland forced to concede a throw-in straight from the restart. Bin Dau'd found Brooks with a trademark long throw, who crossed the ball early to find substitute John Harding popping up in the right place at the right time to send Bettia through to the final. The striker showed great touch to control the ball with his left foot, before he fired home with his right foot past Lamar and into the back of the Zanzabarland net, sending the legions of Bettian fans into delirium.

A late free-kick from Lapp had Bettia fans slightly worried, but the defensive wall did its duties and the rebounding loose ball was cleared away to safety. Bettia then changed tack, bringing on Morgan in defence in place of Hutton in order to hold on for ten minutes and kill the game.

It was a deserved win for Bettia who looked the better side for the majority of the game, and only the winner of the other semi-final now separates Ian Atkins' side from their first ever piece of silverware at tomorrow's showpiece final at Vilita's national stadium.

A breathless Atkins told the Observer "This is amazing. Absolutely amazing. If someone had come up to me before the competition started and said we would be playing in the final, I would've laughed in their face. I have to admit, I was worried coming into the game simply because they (Zanzabarland) had something of a psychological edge over us, and it seemed history was repeating itself when the lass Lapp scored just before half-time - as any pro will tell you, that is the worst time to concede. But, as has happened so many times before, we chased the game and answered that goal superbly. We then scored near the end and did an excellent job of holding on to that lead."

When learning that Bettia will be meeting Corneliu in the final at Vilita's Rivali Ring Stadium, Atkins commented "In short, they're a very strong team that we don't know a damn thing about. We haven't really studied the Vilitan stages of this competition simply because we didn't expect that we'd need to. No matter, we shall be watching the tapes of their semi with great interest, maybe we'll gain something from that. I may even take some notes - thats if my toerag of an assistant Gerry isn't using it to make paper aeroplanes again. Honestly, we must've got through a whole pack of these things in just a week. If we somehow manage to progress far in the World Cup, there'll be a national paper shortage!"

We're (Baptism of) Fired Up For The Final!

The Bettian national team has surpassed all expectations by making it to the final of Baptism of Fire Cup 22. They came here simply looking to add some top-flight international experience ahead of the next World Cup, but instead find themselves on the verge of adding their names to the illustrious list of previous winners. So how did they get here...?

GROUP C
Bettia 0-1 Zanzabarland
The Baptism of Fire Cup certainly lived up to its name as the Aroras got off to a stuttering start against the Snakes, conceding a soft early goal and never looking like retaliating.

Bettia 1-1 Bestiville
A controversial game that saw Musa Williams harshly sent off after just five minutes. Bettia gradually got back into the game, with Stuart Abdul-Rahim scoring in the second half.

Bettia 1-0 Kazakhstania
A hard-fought victory, with Abdul-Rahim scoring a late goal to ensure Bettia scrape through to the quarter-finals.

QUARTER FINAL
Bettia 2-1 Nedalia
In this much-anticipated matchup, Bettia scored a shock win against favourites Nedalia despite conceding an early goal. A purple patch of two goals in five minutes saw the Aroras through against the Lions.

SEMI FINAL
Bettia 2-1 Zanzabarland (AET)
Bettia needed extra-time to gain revenge on Group C winners Zanzabarland after going behind to a goal by Tiffany Lapp, who did the damage in their first encounter. An extra-time goal from John Harding fired Bettia into the final.

And so Bettia prepare to meet Corneliu in the final, which is being played at the picturesque Rivali Ring Stadium in Vilita. The entire country is expected to grind to a standstill as the final is beamed live into living rooms and cafes throughout the nation.

Even as we speak thousands of Bettians are flocking to Vilita, grabbing whatever tickets they can get their hands on, whether it be by plane or by train.

Some of our more gullible citizens have even been duped into buying boat tickets, which is about as much use as a chocolate fireguard when you're living in a nation high in the mountains and a thousand miles away from the sea.

We spoke to Stormin' Arora fanatics Abdul and Ali, who had just arrived in Vilita from Legalese, and asked what they thought our boys' chances were.

"We're still in shock. We made it!! Whoooo! Oh, I tell ya, it feels good to be here. We've seen every one of our games so far, and the transformation has been brilliant. We played like a bunch of blimmin' fairies in the first game, but we've got better and better as we've gone on."

"I tell ya, my throat is feeling a little tender at the mo. I don't think I'll be able to speak tomorrow - do they do sign language over here? I hope so, otherwise I might not get any breakfast. What sort of food do they do over here anyway?"

"Not sure. I've heard Vilitan fish 'n chips are alright. Anyway, what about Corneliu then? Dunno much about them to be honest, but then again we don't know much about any of the teams here. I guess we'll just play it by ear, sing our hearts out, shout our heads off and let our doctors deal with the laryngitis next week."

As far as the final is concerned, manager Ian Atkins may be forced to name a changed lineup. Stalwart goalkeeper Amir Bettison injured his wrist slightly towards the end of yesterday's dramatic victory over Zanzabarland, and if no improvement is made he will be replaced by Ricardo DiTorino. This will be a terrible blow for the team and for Bettison, who has been outstanding between the sticks throughout this tournament.

Other than that, Atkins is expected to keep faith with the starting lineup that has seen Bettia through the knockout stages. The 5-3-2 formation has suited the team well, offering a degree of flexibility that the previously-used 4-4-2 and 4-3-3 couldn't. Whilst fundamentally a defensive tactic, the two wing-backs on either side of the back line can quickly break up the wings to set up fast counter-attacks. The man in the centre of defence can also be pushed up to bolster the midfield, or even pushed back behind the back four to act as a sweeper if necessary without causing too much disruption to the shape of the team.

Hopes are naturally high, but whatever the result against Corneliu the squad will return to Bettia with their heads held high, and they are sure to be given a rapturous welcome home.

CORNELIU 0

Pinch yourself dear readers - you ARE reading that scoreline correctly. You probably knew that already however, as hundreds of thousands of Bettians celebrated in the streets throughout the country.

Bettia cantered to cup glory here today at Vilita's Tivali Ring Stadium with a stunning seven-goal victory against a Corneliu team who didn't help their cause by finishing with just nine men.

Bettia had a less than ideal preperation to this match as veteran goalkeeper Amir Bettison was ruled out of the side with a wrist sprain. He was replaced by young Ricardo DiTorino making only his fifth appearance for the national team.

As seems to be the norm, Bettia started slowly and nervously, and it was Corneliu who started the stronger of the two teams, creating a couple of good chances within the first ten minutes.

Defender Travis Roberts played a good ball to Eric Johnson who split the Bettian defence wide open to find Testa who cooly slotted the ball under the advancing DiTorino only to see his effort trickle just wide of the left-hand post. It was Testa again who had a golden opportunity inside the 18-yard box only to blaze high over the bar.

That was the wake-up call Bettia needed as they slowly got back into the game. Geraint Carew made a telling run up the right wing and crossed to Chris Hutton, whose tame effort was easily gathered by the Cornelian goalie.

The turning point came in the 29th minute. Connick looped the ball over the back four to Stuart Abdul-Rahim who was hacked down in the penalty area by Travis Roberts, leaving the referee no choice but to give the defender his marching orders. Abdul-Rahim dusted himself down to drill the spot-kick into the top left corner.

Bettia soon capitalised on their advantage, as just six minutes later Abdul-Rahim latched onto a Brooks corner to make it 2-0, volleying the ball past a helpless goalkeeper with great aplomb. And so the score remained until half-time.

After the restart Bettia soon went three goals to the good. Connick took a speculative shot from 25 yards which was blocked in the penalty area. The Corneliu defence tried and failed to clear their lines, the ball falling to Hutton who gratefully poked the ball home through the crowd of players.

Bettia were well and truly in the ascendancy by now, peppering the Corneliu defence almost at will and forcing a sucession of corners. Manager Ian Atkins sensed this a made a tactical double substitution, replacing defnders Ryder and Bin Da'ud with strikers Harding and Ward, thus changing their original 5-3-2 formation to an unorthodox, aggressive 3-3-4.

This change paid dividends almost immediately. The impressive Ward was hauled down 25 yards from goal after bursting through the Corneliu defence, for which Eric Peterson was sent off after committing his second bookable offence. Evan Brooks spectactularly curled the resulting free-kick around the wall to make it 4-0, and he soon made it five. Omar Whistler caught a defender in possession then rounded the keeper and squared the ball to Brooks who was lurking in the six-yard box for the easiest of tap-ins.

Abdul-Rahim completed his hat-trick eight minutes later, heading home a Brooks corner swung in high to the back post to make it 6-0. John Harding completed the rout in injury time in almost identical fashion, rising to head home a Brooks corner at the back post.

The full-time whistle went to signal the end of this extraordinary matchup. Bettia captain Amir Bettison, who was bitterly disappointed at having to sit this game out, collected the Baptism of Fire Cup, tastefully adorned in green-and-yellow ribbons, from the President of Vilita and held it aloft sparking wild celebrations from Bettian players and fans alike.

Back at the team hotel, a tearful Ian Atkins told the Observer "I couldn't be prouder of our boys, they were magnificent, they really were. Sure we had plenty of luck out there, which makes a change, but the opportunities were presented to us and we took them."

When asked where do Bettia go from here, he joyfully replied "We're all off out for a curry to celebrate, then its back home to Bettia to get ready for the World Cup. We've just learned that we've been drawn in a very tough qualifying group, so we'll need to prepare big time for that. Oh, are we leaving now? Okay. MINE'S A CHICKEN MADRAS!!"
