The end justifies the means.

Kaenei

Nervous eyes once more regarded his companion for the fifth time in as many minutes, met by a gaze which was clearly weary of placating irrational fear constantly without any obvious progress or reward. A harsh whisper permeated the previous silence between them as the latter individual finally lost patience with a situation grating upon the nerves-

“You are growing annoying; I will not waste my time reassuring you if you are going to insist on ignoring what I have to say.”

His head bowed visibly as the young women lashed out in recognisable irritation, clearly having been driven too far by incessant complaining and pointless questioning.

“I am simply nervous.” He whispered in reply.

“A worthy excuse twenty minutes ago perhaps,” She began; “Not so worthy after my continued attempts to explain that these meetings rarely run to precision timekeeping.”

“Not very efficient, how can one be expected to remain calm under such circumstances?”

“The very reason for you to be here is hardly easily catalogued or explained,” She hissed.

Surrounding them, the murmurs of other conversations rose; as unimportant or worthy of attention as any myriad patterns of speech. The only distinction of note being that the said conversationalists were in pairs, one male to one female and huddled; as though not fully trusting their neighbour with so much as a pleasantry. Shafts of brilliant white light penetrated flimsy metal grating upon the floor and highlighted the bare, unremarkable rock of the walls which formed the windowless enclosure. From the roof bundles of conduits and piping ran, occasionally branching to the side and running the course of the wall before disappearing into the floor and light.

With a loud hiss, further illumination burst forth from parted doors as several figures entered, stopping a short distance from the entryway and regarding those in attendance with unmistakable scrutiny and attention. Finally and as though sated, they lowered into waiting chairs; silence falling over the group. As though agreeing with his mysterious brethren the lead newcomer spoke, his words ringing clearly-

“Our numbers are swelling; we shall have to arrange a larger meeting venue.”

A second figure added, “Yet our time is short- To the matter at hand.”

“We know of your dreams,” The first Kaeneian began. “We realise what it is you crave for whilst you toss and turn, all the while tormented by desires and feelings which threaten to overwhelm and take control. Indeed we have dreamt those same things, longed at one stage for such desires; craved the overwhelming- The difference between us my friends, and interested students? We have simply learned to stop repressing that which will grant you all of this and more, whilst you are beginning only now such a momentous journey.”

“Take your partner by the hand,” He added.

The irritation felt moments ago by the young women was placed aside as the previous object of her frustration gingerly retrieved her hand, clasping fingertips around the outstretched limb until it had virtually disappeared beneath the masculine counterpart. She shivered slightly as his fingers began to trace gentle patterns against her flesh without conscious command, a soft gasp escaping from struggling lips.

“Regard her and what she stands for; not simply the mother of our children or the opposite sex. Not simply a means for procreation and the furtherance of the species but that which can bring unity to your soul- That which has been missing despite any physiological acts already partaken in.”

The Kaeneian continued to talk, rising to his feet however.

“It is rare indeed for any one individual to be complete; in spirit or otherwise. It is more commonplace instead for us to seek another, a partner that might quash our faults with their own irrepressible boons; at the same time the reverse occurring to create a harmonious, though as is the way of all things, seldom perfect union.”

“Throughout this Earth, couples of all nations engage in the acts of courtship for lust, companionship and the platonic. Upon this Terra an incalculable number take mates not simply to reproduce but to find that which defies the greatest efforts to define it- Love.”

“Not the sum of the technologies of the Triumvirate of Yut can unlock its secrets; nor the relentless machine of Metus. The assembled abilities of Mars could sooner repel the curious and terrifying Tyranids than explain for us assembled here what it is to love and in turn be loved likewise; it is an emotion as mysterious as the origins of the Universe itself.”

Continuing to walk amongst the listening pairs, the Kaeneian began to gesture.

“Yet the Serene^Union claims to define it simply- An often irrational emotional attachment to a person, animal or inanimate object which impairs the sufferer’s ability to examine a situation logically and act as such. A simple and ready explanation, yet for all the correctness it is as wrong as anything imaginable.”

“You are here today, because you have grown tired of that explanation. You are listening to my words because the stifling sterility of Kaeneian society has driven you to the point of distraction and insanity; a painful cacophony of wonders beckon you to sample their delights, and I shall assist you in the difficult transition.”

“I shall speak no more, for the next small while requires no words, merely action.”

She felt as though her hand would tremble, were it not within the secure though painless grasp of his entwined fingers. The distance between them had greatly closed, until she could feel the product of his exhaling lungs tickle her lips delicately; a soft and rolling breath that danced across her features with only the slightest physical contact. She instinctively coupled the small of his back and by doing so gave silent encouragement, as he leaned forwards further.

Their lips brushed together, and for a moment they froze as the intensity of the feeling sparked violently; mimicking lightning as it might find the earth through the shattered husk of a tree. Longing overpowered hesitation and they met again with more urgency, lips widening to allow questing and exploration. She felt herself fall backwards slightly until she was held utterly in his secure and strong grip, a role she accepted willingly as these feelings tore through an unprepared mind.

“Be strong, for these feelings are intense and it is equally important not to grant them total authority as it is to experience them at all. You have a lifetime to become acquainted, and it will do you and your partner no good to rush what must be gradually understood…”

Before the Kaeneian could continue, a tremendous shearing assaulted the chamber, destroying the chemistry created and invoking much grimacing from those assembled. From the serenity of the doorway chaos emerged, as the steel plating buckled violently and simply toppled over; a cloud of smoke seeping inwards from where before only reflection had stood.

Emerging from the cloud, figures entered hastily- Two, four and six soon ensured that a veritable wall between the only exit and the Kaeneians grouped together ensured none could leave without somehow reaching truce or parley.

The initial intruder made no effort to hide identity or otherwise make the reason for his transgression known; Dressed in a simple two-piece garb of black and grey. His hands appeared gloved in a similar dark material, which gripped some variety of energy weapon and furthermore pointed it at those ahead.

“In accordance with the preservation doctrine laid down by the Ministry of Intelligence, and acting as an agent for the security of the Serene^Union I hereby order all attended to submit to the charge of conspiracy to incite emotional excitement.”

The mysterious stranger had scarcely finished uttering his demand when the Kaeneian so vocal beforehand stepped forward as if to attempt a near-impossible escape from the chamber, though he had hardly begun to move before the agent of the Intelligence Ministry forced him to rethink such a hasty move.

“I am authorised to utilise force, and shall if provoked.”

Nervous eyes once more sought the security of cooler counterparts, though this time they found the same fear mirroring. She realised the terror he felt coursing through flaring veins, and in truth on this occasion no blame could be placed for such a reaction as she felt the same fear. Many months had elapsed since she had first begun to attend these self-discovery teachings and never in that time had anything of this magnitude occurred- Never had the authority of the Serene^Union landed upon them with such painful pressure.

Operative Calistar stood with dispassion as the final insurgent was secured for removal, his vision settling upon her visage as she obediently and with remarkable cannon made to exit. He was somewhat surprised as she spoke, making him the obvious recipient of the tirade.

“We have done nothing of criminality! We disagree with society, yet that does not warrant such treatment!”

Calistar sighed deeply, perversely deciding to indulge the ignorant girl.

“Society does not, and shall not ever be aware that such a difference in opinion exists.” He began, fixing a withering stare upon her flinching form. “You are a dangerous and subversive element whose existence cannot be tolerated, cannot be allowed to remain un-expunged. Your very nature does not allow simple existence, you expand even when you seek to limit your own numbers; such is the way of your deviancy that left to your own devices your beliefs would provoke crisis. Safeguarding the Serene^Union is uppermost in the priorities of the Ministry, and rest assured you shall do no further damage.”

She opened her mouth to retort, but was silenced as Calistar waved his hand. “I shall not indulge you further; remember only these words that I will share with you now.”

Leaning forwards until they were separated by scarcely inches, he whispered.

“The end justifies the means.”
