You don't remember when the boat went down, or even what kind of boat it was,be it luxury or a small fishing boat. Suppose at this point it doesn't matter, becausenow you're washed up on some sandy beach in the absolute middle of nowhere, on some small deserted island. You stumble to your feet and begin searching for bits of wreckage, but not a single item is to be found, not even a piece of the boat itself. Discouraged you begin to search for food and a possible place to provide you shelter, but none of the trees bear any fruit and none of the plants contain any berries. There are absolutely no caves or sheltered places for you to rest, so you begin to build.
None of the leaves or branches are big enough to provide adequate shelter, so you just decide to sleep in a nearby bush when it gets dark. With no food and no fresh drinking water available, you begin the long wait until you slowly starve to death. You think about your family and the life you left behind, and just as you were about to give up hope, you see an object floating towards the shore. In a hurry you dash down towards the water and watch as the object floats onto the sandy beach. It's not a piece of wreckage or anything useful, but instead it is a dead body. The body is that of a small African teenager, and his naked body sits there on the beach, motionless. You stare at the body in horror and realize that you cannot leave it sitting out in the open, because soon it will start to decay and the smell will become overwhelming.
You try to move the body, but you cannot bring yourself to touch the corpse's cold clammy skin. You try to use leaves as gloves, but you still cannot bring yourself to move the dead body, so you decide to just let it sit where it is. You move to the other side of the small island and sit there for a few days, thinking about the body that is beginning to stink in the hot sun. Out of curiosity you go back down towards that spot of beach, and you notice that the body is starting to bloat. The boy's facial features are distorted and his body blown up like a balloon, and insects and other small creatures are beginning to feast upon his rotting flesh. The sight it overwhelming, and you run from the site feeling sick to your stomach. The smell is disgusting.
You spend that night in agony, for your insides are starting to digest themselves and all you can think about is that rotting body. Each day that passes your hunger increases, to the point now where you move back down to that section of beach and give serious thought to eating that body. You kneel next to the now horridly decayed corpse and look it over, your mouth thinking of nothing but food. As you bend down to take a bite, you recoil yourself and come to your senses. You know that the toxins inside the body would surely kill you in a most painful and disgusting manner, so you decide you would rather starve than taste his repulsive flesh.
As you get up to leave, your ears catch the faint sound of a voice saying Thank you for not eating me! You turn back to the body to see it smiling at you, it's white teeth clearly visible, for the ants and other bugs have eaten away his lips. You shake your head in disbelief, but the corpse keeps talking to you for the rest of the afternoon and well into the evening. You chat about life and love lost, and what you plan to do in the afterlife. The body sings songs to you as the sun begins to set, and he walks with you back to your sleeping spot. He lags behind you a bit, and you look back to see his body moving to and fro as his rotten legs struggle to carry himself. His near skeletal arms sway back and forth, and his massively bloated gut make him look almost humorous in appearance. You watch as he slumps to the ground several dozen yards away from you, and you begin to sleep for the night.
When you wake up the next day, you realize just what happened to you. You were talking to the decaying corpse of some boy, and the horrifying thought makes you begin to visibly shake. You decide to put your mind to ease and go back down to the site to reassure yourself that it was all a hallucination, but when you arrive there the body is gone. You look around frantically for the corpse, but it is completely gone. There are no animals around that could have taken it, and it did not appear to have washed out to sea again, so for the remainder of the day you search for the body, but you find nothing.
That night you try to sleep, but the moon is high and there is a slight breeze that causes to vegetation to stir. The tide begins to crash and save for the moonlight, all is dark. You close your eyes several times but find yourself opening them mere seconds later, for the fear inside your now withering body grows by the minute. Finally, as your weary mind begins to slip into slumber, you notice that stench again. You try to keep your eyes closed, but the smell intensifies and you get the strange impression you are not alone. You open your eyes in an instant and see the corpse mere inches from your face, it's glazed over eyes staring directly into yours.
You then sit up in bed, your forehead covered in sweat. The alarm clock read 2:57 am, and the entire room is dark. Your mouth is dry from thirst, and you decide that you need to go upstairs for a drink of water. You remove yourself from your bed and the first thing you do is turn on the light, and as you walk from room to room you turn on every light behind you, making sure that nothing and no one is following you. The last lightswitch in the basement is at the top of the stairs, and with an uneasy feeling you bolt up the stairs and flick the light on quickly. Nothing is there.
You walk into the kitchen and remove a tall glass from the cupboard, pouring yourself some fresh ice water from the fridge. As you drink it you pay special attention to the shadows and especially the windows, expecting a nasty surprise at any minute. But nothing happens, and you down another glass or two of water then start back to your room. You intentionally left the light on at the top of the steps in case you needed to come back upstairs for anything, and as you turn off the lights in each room before you get to yours, you look over your shoulder and all around you. Nothing is there.
You climb back into bed and pull the still warm covers over your body and tell yourself it was all just a bad dream. As you lay there looking at the ceiling, that same uneasy feeling washes over you. The headlights of a passing car outside shine in through your window, and to your horror that same corpse is in bed with you. You scream as loud as you can, but your brother that sleeps in the same room as you cannot hear you. The corpse climbs on top of you and begins smothering you, and you cry hysterically as your life flashes before your eyes.
Then morning comes, and you wake from your bed. It's 7:40, and you need to be to work at 8:00 am. As you stand up and stretch, you say to yourself, That was one messed up dream.
