Camp Peary, Derscon
0154 Hours
In the forests, some Delta Force soldiers were doing some of the final field tests of the Force Warrior program. Red Actual got on his mike, which was attached to his helmet and by his mouth.
"Alpha Squadron, this is Red Actual, move five clicks west, dig in." Platoon Red's leader activated the map got a reading of the battlefield. The exact positions of the soldiers were red blips on the map, which was generated by satellites orbiting above. The chips implanted in the soldiers’ hearts and brains sent out all vital signs -- heart rate, blood pressure, external and internal body temperature -- and exact location to satellites, which forwarded them to the Field Command Centre and the platoon-and-up leaders. This enabled medics to assess injuries before they even got to the field, and keep track of locales of soldiers and hot spots, as well as good LZs.
The temperature was a cold thirty-six degrees, but Red Actual felt fine, because of the OFW spacer fabric and capillaries that maintained a normal seventy-three degree temperature, give or take about five or so degrees. Obviously, there’d be none in the training, but the outer garment could withstand a chemical or biological attack, so there was no need for that. Since the traditional head cover helmet was replaced with the full-head helmet, and was attached airtight to the neck of the outfit, there was no need for an extra gas mask.
The visor was made of a one way Plexiglas material that managed to block small arms fire for a few seconds – enough to get you to the ground. The visor went one hundred and eighty degrees around the helmet, allowing for peripheral vision while in its infrared or low-light mode. The HUD on the visor gave an ammo count for his 5.56 AP rounds and his 20mm HEAB rounds in his XM29B. It also gave his hydrogen fuel cell energy gauge, telling him how much it was depleted. It usually lasted for about two to five days, depending, and then it needed recharged back at the “pack mule.”
“Roger, Actual, on our way.” Red Actual flipped the map back up, which only took up one side of the visor, and saw them start to move. He turned the map back off and poked his gun around the tree he was behind. The video link went up to a little corner on his HUD. When he saw the coast was clear he went from behind the tree to rendezvous with Alpha.
*BANG!*
Red Actual fell to the ground from the rubber bullet hitting his helmet. Red Platoon was up against Blue platoon testing the stuff. What the rubber bullet represented was a .50 sniper rifle blasting his head off.
Red Actual down. Blue team wins. Come back to base.
The all-systems broadcast was sent out by the Commander in Chief of the Dersconi Imperial Army, Imperial Marshal Sir Arthur Wellesley, the Duke of Wellington.
Back at the base, the platoons gathered at the seats and the CINC came to the front.
“What you have just participated in,” Sir Wellesley was saying. “Is a breakthrough in warfare for Derscon. The OFW systems you just tested will make our soldiers the most powerful force in the world. With the most highly advanced battlefield technology available, you will not just be soldiers, you in your entirety will be a combat system. Your weapon now serves as only one part of a complex system designed for complete and total battlefield superiority.
“What you just tested is only one part of the Advanced Combat Systems we have in mind. Unmanned and manned vehicles on land, in sea, in air and in space will bring about further battlefield dominance. You are just the first part. In other places in Derscon, these other systems are being tested as we speak.
“You are the first to have these systems, but you definitely will not be the last. I will push this so as to have every soldier of the Dersconi Imperial Army equipped with the OFW. Obviously, this will not happen for budget reasons, so all Special Ops personnel will be equipped with this. Who knows? Maybe even all of the Marines will get them.
“Your XM29B is the final stage of the OICW program. Other things have come out of it, such as the XM8, which, along with the G36, will be replacing the M16A2 and M4 as the standard weapon of the army.
“You should be proud of yourselves, as you have played a role in Dersconi battlefield superiority brought to unthinkable levels.”
