Sarzonia prepares for first handball appearance
Unlike Sarzonia's foray into football, the national handball team is coming into the World Cup having extensive domestic league experience. The eight teams of Sarzonia's domestic league have been competing for 10 seasons, though they all are playing against international competition for the first time.
"It's a challenge for us, that's for sure," Coach Harry Bosket said. "This is the first time we've even seen tapes on the players we're going to be facing."
Sarzonia is looking to base its team largely on speed and put emphasis on a passing offense. Possession is going to be "the crucial factor" that determines the team's success or failure.
"If we don't win the time of possession battle, we're most likely not going to win games," Bosket said. "We need to wear out other teams with our speed, our ability to hold the ball, and our depth."
The team will play its inaugural match against Funny Looking Islands with Euroslavia, Kazakhstania and Cockbill Street in the offing. Bosket said the team is not going to take any of its matches for granted, but Cockbill Street's experience in international handball is, "a concern."
"They've been there back when there was a semi-regular schedule for the World Cup," Bosket said. "That's going to be a possible stumbling block for us."

Hockey Canada prepares for hosting "Handball Melee"
Today, Hockey Canada is preparing for the World Cup of Handball that will arrive very very shortly. Having hosted the Lacrosse World Cup at this very moment, this is huge for Hockey Canada's development. The inexplicably huge nation sitting atop the Arctic Circle has some cities that rival that of Tokyo, Toronto, London and Singapore.
Hockey Canadian players have been anxious. The Prime Minister of the communist nation, Jessica Milne, will throw up the honourary ball to kick off the first game of the tournement where Hockey Canada will face sporting powerhouse Liverpool England. Over time, the tourism will gradually increase. With regular visits to tourist hotspots, the Hockey Canadian economy will surely skyrocket.
Hockey Canada doesn't see this as a moneymaking oppurtunity. They are just playing here at home to score some points, win a few games, maybe even take a shot at the championchip.

"Each team here has a great shot at winning the tournament but you have to think that the home town team of Hockey Canada is the favorite."
"Of course Rach. They do have the home crowd advantage but sometimes it isn't enough. This will definitely be a great tournament."

"This is the standings after day number one. "
"In post game interviews, the teams expressed how well they played. Hockey Canada's coach was thrilled with how the team performed."
I'm glad that we won. Liverpool was coming back and hard but we managed to hold them off for the victory
"Euroslavia's escape with a two goal victory had their coach both happy and relieved."
Kazakhstania had a great game. THere was a point when the game could've gone either way but it broke our way and we managed to hold on for the victory.
"Kazakhstania's Coach was also happy with how they performed though they were on the losing end."
Its tough to lose a game like this. The team played its heart out but it wasn't enough to win. We'll bounce back from this game and put it behind us. Now its time to concentrate on our next opponet.

Cockbill Street Back For More
Long-Sought Handball Glory Around The Corner?
For four world championships we tried, and always the Streetians came up against some bogey team that really shouldn't be strong enough. Now, however, a ten-team world championship of handball has been started by Hockey Canada, and Cockbill Street are up against Lovisa, Funny Looking Islands, Euroslavia and Sarzonia in the group stage.
Funnily enough, every team seems to have a different schedule in the group stages, probably a Canadian thing. The point is, however, that eight teams will go through to the quarter-final stage - which means that the Streetians have a great chance of progressing. The Sarzonian coach Harry Bosket is particularly awed by the Streetian side, and he said it would be "a concern" facing a side with such international experience.
However, it's an entirely new-look Streetian line-up, as the old players are now struggling to keep up with their day jobs - most as coaches in the Streetian Handball League, where Vimesbairn Athletic took their third successive title last year after beating Likh'gokh I'rath'rah'ba 30-25 in the final game that decided the title.
The Streetian team (with probable attack/defense positions):
1st choice goalkeeper: 18 Chris Johnson, aged 22, Roegrow United
2nd choice goalkeeper: 1 Alan Wrenwalk, aged 27, Vimesbairn Athletic
Left back/Left-second defender: 4 Peter Samuels, aged 24, Likh'gokh I'rath'rah'ba
Right back/Right-second defender: 11 Timothy Chatham, aged 26, Chapham City
Playmaker/central defender: 6 Ivar Bearhugger, aged 28, K'haz'bak Ruth'kah'ba
Left wing/offensive guard: 10 Ryan Wilkinson, aged 21, Vimesbairn Athletic
Right wing/right-first defender: 2 Magnesium-carbonate, aged 23, Jotneheim Mountains SC
Line player: 8 Chris Johnstone, aged 27, Vimesbairn Athletic (substitute left-first defender)
Left-first defender: 13 Oscar Bandridge, aged 21, Roegrow United (substitute right back)
Substitutes:
Line player and central defender, 9 Harald Glodsson, aged 25, K'haz'bak Ruth'kah'ba
Left wing and left-second defender, 20 Steven Belfry, aged 28, Roegrow United
Left back and right defender, 16 Brian Thomson, aged 19, Chapham City
Playmaker and right-first defender, 7 Robert Collins, aged 20, Williamstown Sports
Right wing and left defender, 14 Thorir Spearthrower, aged 30, K'haz'bak Ruth'kah'ba

Street Collapse To Old Foes
Lovisa Win Tightly Contested Game
Stamina was the key factor as Cockbill Street ran out of time against Lovisa, losing an exciting game by three goals and getting off to a poor start to their campaign to finally take an international handball trophy - in one of the sports so beloved by the Streeters that nevertheless doesn't quite reach up to national sport status. The team obviously couldn't adjust to the cold climate of Volov, Hockey Canada, and were punished by the poor heating systems.
Not only that, though. Lovisa played a great passing game early on, getting the ball in past Bearhugger into their line-player Niedzwiedzki on a number of occasions, and only a good Chris Johnson at the back prevented more goals being conceded. Up front, Samuels and Bearhugger struggled with the cooperation, and never got in proper shots from far out - and their keeper, Szyenowicz, made some great saves when the ball was given out to the wingers Wilkinson and Magnesium-carbonate.
After eleven minutes, the score was 8-4 to Lovisa, and the Streetian coach Martin Read (you may recognise him - he was the Street's last line-player, scoring eight goals against The Belmore Family in the "crazy" World Cup four), took a time-out. Well deserved - but it didn't help much. Although they changed to a flat 6-0 defence that conceded relatively few goals. However, the attack problems continued, and the Streetians struggled to a 12-14 deficit at half-time.
A plucky effort in the early second half, however, cut the deficit to within one goal after substitute left back Brian Thomson scored three goals in two minutes on three successive attacks. However, that was as close as they got - Lovisa's keeper shut up shop as the shots from the back didn't come with enough speed, and the defense leaked enough penalties for Niedzwiedzki to end up with 10 goals in the match. Top scorer for the Street was Bearhugger, with five, but today it just didn't click. Cockbill Street will be hoping to rebuild some face against the Euroslavian team, who started well with a 24-22 victory over Kazakhstania.

"Welcome back, I'm Rachel Carson. Bernard is sick tonight. Today marks Day 2 of the International Handball Competition and what a day it was. Hockey Canada was blown out Ambrovisia 31-26. Sarzonia won by two goals over Euroslavia and Liverpool England beats Kazakhstania 23-20.
"But let us look at this 5 goal defeat. This wasn't even close from the start. Hockey Canada was clearly outplayed."
They just played better. We did our best but they came out hot and falling behind early, that hurt. We'll bounce back from this defeat so don't count us out yet.
"That was the Hockey Canada's coach. This marks the end of day 2 and so far, everyone is still in the hunt for the Handball cup.

"Welcome back, I'm Bernard along with Rachel. Rachel thanks for taking over for me yesterday."
"Your welcome. Todays competition was not as competitive as some of our past days. We had 3 blow outs and a squeeker and a good win."
"That's right Rachel. Hockey Canada showed what they can do today as they defeated Lovisa 30-21. This game wasn't even close to start with. Hockey Canada started out with a 5 goal lead and lead by as many as 15 before ending with a 9 point victory."
"In our second game, FLI wins by three points over Druidia 28-25. This game went back and forth till the very end when Funny Looking Islands finally pulled away to win it."
"Euroslavia's match was also a no contest. Euroslavia dominated from the start. The final? 33-27. Cockbill Street tried to make a game of it late but they came up short."
"Our next to the last match was one terrific game. No one knew who was going to win till the final buzzer. In the end, Sarzonia defeated Kazahkstania 27-26. This game was an instant classic and a game that should be replayed because it gave the true meaning of handball. This game was also back and forth till the Sarzonia's star fired in a close in goal to put them up for good."
"In our final game, Liverpool England took out Ambrovisia 31-25. This game was close then Liverpool England got hot and didn't look back scoring the last six points before this game ended."

CORNELIU SPORTS PROGRAM
"Today is day number 4 and what a day it was."
"Your right Rachel. This was a day that saw many 4+ goal victories. Shall we run it down?"
"Yes lets. We'll start off with Funny Looking Islands 29-24 victory. In the first half, this game was evenly matched. When the 2nd half started, it was all FLI. Hockey Canada did try to comeback but it was to little to late. They popped in three late goals but still lost by five."
"Thanks Rach. In our second game Druidia defeated Euroslavia 27-23. The game was closer than that 4 goal victory. Euroslavia actually lead at the half but then had a let down that let Druidia take the lead. The Druidia team then goes on a 3 goal run near the end to make it a four goal victory and not a one goal victory. Rachel?"
"In our third game, Cockbill Street defeats Sarzonia 31 to 26. Cockbill Street dominated from the start. Sarzonia did their best but they never could get any closer than three goals. Cockbill Street outplayed Sarzonia and out shot them too."
"Our fourth game was the closest of the five games that were played. Kazahkstania defeats Ambrovisia 27-25. This game was in doubt till Kazakhstania went popped in 2 straight goals half way through the 2nd half then polished it off with another goal. Ambrovisia led a few times but was never able to put this game away."
"Our last game saw Lovisa defeating Liverpool England 24-19. This game was close at the end of the first half with Liverpool England leading. In the 2nd half, it was all Lovisa. Lovisa outplayed Liverpool England to secure the victory."
